Befoil 16 Sport, This Flying Catamaran Is Totally Modular

befoil 16 sport flying catamaran

Befoil launched its new flying catamaran, the Befoil 16 Sport, designed by a renowned firm of naval architects, VPLP. Based in Lorient, Brittany, since 2017, Befoil is a boat manufacturer building foiling boats. The manufacturing of the Befoil 16 Sport is entirely Made in Europe.

Following on from the Befoil 16 RT in 2019, this new sportier, lighter, epoxy/glass fibre composite version, ensures the maximum amount of fun on the water. Thanks to its trapezes, its two self-regulating T-foils and its two lifting rudders, this model takes off in upwards of 8 knots of breeze.

This new model is totally modular and can be immediately adapted to the level of all users thanks to avariety of kits, which can be installed or removed at any time: from the classic sports catamaran to the ultimate sports version, it’s the same boat which can be transformed to suit your wishes.

Whether it’s forfamily sailing in complete safety, racing in the F16 class, learning how to helm a foiler, a thrilling ‘magic carpet’ ride, or a pure adrenalin rush whilst training out on the wire of a foiler, there is just a single solution: the Befoil 16 Sport!

Benjamin MAGNARD, president of Befoil, explains: “ My dream was to enable everyone to fly across the water! Thanks to the Befoil 16 Sport, fans of dinghy sailing – whatever their level – will be able to take off, in light airs and enjoy thrilling new sensations out on the water, coloured by fun and speed, like a ride on a magic carpet! Fully modular, the Befoil 16 Sport is truly groundbreaking, enabling a switch from one version to the next in under 5 minutes. ”

The first models are available with prices starting at €20,825 ex. VAT* (excluding optional kits).

Test / Construction of the Befoil 16 Sport: Robust but high performance materials

The Befoil 16 Sport catamaran being assembled in the Lorient workshop

Before going to try the Befoil 16 Sport, we were able to take a tour of the shipyard and talk to the teams about the construction of this foiling catamaran. We discussed the architectural choices, the evolution of materials compared to the first Befoil and the design philosophy of the boat to respond to the program of opening up to sailors.

Briag Merlet

Befoil 16 Sport : A light version in infusion

Second generation of the Befoil catamarans, the Befoil 16 Sport the manufacturer's stated aim is to offer a boat that makes flying accessible to as many people as possible. But since the launch of its first model, designed primarily for sailing clubs, the shipyard from Lorient has revised its copy to lighten its boat and make it more efficient. While the Befoil 16 had hulls made of rotomolded polyethylene, in partnership with the Erplast shipyard , the new Befoil 16 Sport has fiberglass and vinylester resin floats, infused by the Spanish shipyard Mestral Marine Works (MMW), renowned for its construction of racing-cruising yachts . The 16-foot catamaran has been slimmed down from 230 kg to 175 kg. This gain of almost 25% is crucial for an early take-off of the boat .

Infusion des coques du Befoil 16 Sport chez MMW

While the shipyard has chosen to abandon rotational molding for weight reasons, it prefers to build its hulls in fiberglass rather than carbon. This keeps the price down while keeping the boat less sensitive to shocks. It can thus be kept by a private yachtsman or a sailing club without worrying about excessive maintenance and protection.

Optimized aluminum appendages

A key element for the Befoil 16 Sport flying boat program is the choice of appendages. As with its first boat, the manufacturer decided to keep aluminum foils and rudders. The lower sensitivity of metal to shocks and abrasion gives it a better durability than carbon for amateur use, especially on the beach. Titanium parts are nevertheless machined for the junction of the vertical and horizontal foil profiles. A carbon version of the appendages is available as an option.

Appendices en aluminium du Befoil 16 Sport en cours de montage

We are still thinking about optimizing the profiles and weight of the appendages, which is important for a 16-foot catamaran . "Today, we have three aluminum dies specially designed for the boat, one for the vertical parts, one for the fixed part of the foil and one for the flaps. We are working on a new die for the rudders" explains Charles de Lisle, technical manager. All the developments can be adapted to existing boats.

Profils existant des appendices en aluminium (plan porteur et volet)

Easy storage and assembly

Aluminum has also been used in other areas of the boat . The rigging is also made of an aluminum mast and boom. Only the bowsprit, without martingale, is made of carbon to hold the efforts of the gennaker. The beams, still in aluminum, are bolted. "We imposed the constraint of being able to disassemble and reassemble the boat quickly. There is no gluing. This is also why the trampoline is not attached to the hull" explains Charles de Lisle. Once disassembled, the hulls can be easily stored for winter storage or transport . An attractive argument for sailing clubs and individuals.

Un stockage facile du catamaran démonté

If Befoil's workshop in Lorient remains artisanal and continues to be used for development, the quality of finish of the boats is good. Using recognized suppliers, the catamarans seem ready for the acceleration of the production with the launching of the series.

Fasten your seatbelts, forget most of what you’ve learned on the water since you were born, put the yellow lever to manual and cross-check the doors: we’re on the Befoil 16 Sport, and takeoff is imminent!

Place: Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, Brittany (France) Wind: WSW 8-9 knots, gusting 12 - Sea state slight

The hull of Eric Tabarly’s Tornado was flying back in 1976, the AC72s of the 34th America’s Cup flew in 2013, the Ultims are flying, GP50s are flying, Jean-Pierre-Dick and Tom Phipps fly wearing helmets on their ETF26s... In short, on competition multihulls, the jury is no longer out, it seems. Even the sharpest monohulls - and the roundest ones, by the way - have taken to their foils - the Moth and AC75s are flying brilliantly, while the IMOCA and Mini 6.50 are still getting there. But are we, mere amateurs, condemned to ancestral Archimedes-based boating? For the passionate sailing publisher Benjamin Magnard, the answer is clearly “no”. In 2011, he launched the ‘Voilavion’ project. Ten years later, Multihulls World has tried out its direct descendant: the Befoil. This is the boat whose ambition is to make flying accessible to anyone.
