Bancroft DragonForce 65 V7 655mm (25.7") Racing Sailboat from Joysway - PNP - BNC1048-002

There are few R/C modeling activities more peaceful than sailing a yacht on a summer’s evening enjoying a gentle, constant breeze on your preferred pond. Likewise, few activities can be more exciting than racing like a captain in the America’s Cup, using a model yacht against similarly-equipped competitors that places your sailing skills to the test!

Bancroft is pleased to offer the world-renown DragonForce 65 sailing yacht, a model perfectly suited to either activity. Manufactured by Joysway Model Co., it’s now available for sale through Motion RC!

Available in both PNP (no transmitter or receiver) and RTR (includes transmitter and receiver) versions, these models arrive highly prefabricated and ready for final assembly and rigging.

V7 improvements include a new, improved sail winch servo and a revised boat stand that allows either vertical or horizontal securement of the model for convenient storage, transport, or maintenance.

With active chapters in eight countries, DF racing has become an economical and enjoyable portal into the sport of RC sailing. Visit www.dfracing.world for information, rules, competition chapters, and events.

The Joysway DragonForce 65, or DF65 for short, is by far currently the best selling RC yacht in the world (along with its younger brother the DF95)! The reasons are as simple as the concept and design itself, which was developed in collaboration between Joysway and  top RC performance yacht designers . This partnership has resulted in the DF65 which was first released in February 2013, an affordable competition class RC yacht that is so affordable it can enjoyed by serious competitors and non serious hobbyists alike. Sleek lines and competition-developed sails make the DragonForce 65 race, perform and compete in all wind conditions! The boat is based on the ICE design with an ABS hull, profiled aluminium fin and molded plastic rudder. The A rig that comes with the boat is a full sized, fractional low aspect rig with carbon spars and a ball raced gooseneck. The DragonForce 65 is a recognized competition RC yacht that can be sailed in the restricted DF65 Class which is recognized by the American Model Yachting Association, with well defined rules and RC associations that are located worldwide.

With df65 clubs all over north america, chances are there is a group near you sailing one the perfect boat to start you own group sailing as well., having a joysway dragonforce means that, should you like to, you can usually find a location local to you to learn sailing tips and how to configure sails or rigging, compare (and hone) your sailing skills against others, participate in local, state, national or even international competitions. check out dfracing usa for more information, ready to race  out of the box means you all you will need to provide is your own batteries transmitter and receiver are already installed, the df65 rtr version is shipped  with everything necessary to get started . preinstalled servo's, preassembled booms, sails, fittings etc. all you need to do is assemble the spars , mast, hang the sails, install your radio system and go race, spare parts availability:, being the worlds best selling rc yacht, we are well stocked with all of the parts that you need to keep your afternoons and weekends going in the unusual event we are out of stock on df65 parts, be assured there won't be a very long delay - and they're so low in cost that many hobbyists now use them as replacement parts for other rc boat models . dragon sailing  has purchased the df65 as close to getting it off the factory production line as we possibly can. containers arrive directly from joysway in  china and are stocked directly into our warehouse here in the usa. as the leadingus dealer & distributor, we are stocked regularly with boats and parts throughout the year. wherever  you are ordering from in the usa  you can have your yacht in as little as 2-5 days nationwide at extremely low cost. what previously cost $400 to $800 (or higher) has now been made very affordable, and with low cost parts means there are zero barriers to you enjoying your spare time sailing in your local waterway. due to the boats popularity and success, there have been a number of gradual improvements to the design and manufacture of the dragonforce 65 to make it even better.  .

Dragonforce 65 purchase.

Posted by peter clarke on 7th Oct 2022

lots of fun rigging her and getting her ready and the first sail yesterday removed any doubt of the wisdom of this purchase. I actually felt like I was on board this perfect little vessel as she tacked about the small lake in a perfect fall breeze. I will upgrade my radio eventually, however, so that I can monitor the battery strength on the boat itself while sailing. That will merely be icing on the cake..thanks for the prompt service and delivery. This is a big thanks from a very happy crew on the West Coast.

Very good product. Exceeded my expectations in every way. Assembly tip. Cut all shorter lengths of rigging line at least 10mm longer than what the manual says. It will make the knot tying so much easier particularly on the shorter pieces of line. Lastly, for the final rigging of the gybe sail, which happens to be the last line to tie into place, follow the letter designations only and match them to the picture provided. The numbering system differs on the last two eyelets from what is shown on the initial parts labeling diagram and the printed instructions which follow. Follow the placement shown in the picture and the letter designations and all will be well. Happy sailing.

Great value - Fun to build & sail

Posted by AndyH on 7th Jul 2021

This quality RC sailboat is significantly cheaper than equivalents on the market. I found it great fun to assemble/build and have been impressed by the range & reliability of the RC components. Hours of fun on the water!

The product arrived in a relatively short period of time and in extremely good condition. I have been most impressed by the quality of the individual components and the overall product now completed and ready for "sea trials". Threading the "Bowsie

This is a great product and the company providing it has been easy to deal with, and responded rapidly to my order placement. I will buy from them again.

Very good quality construction. Took quite a while to put together as instructions very typical Chinese translations. Good value for the money

Took a little time to set up carefully. Well worth the investment. It sails beautifully.

Posted by rob on 16th Aug 2020

Biggest bang for the $$ I've seen in a long time. Unit is in spectacular condition in a sophisticated packing box, Assembly instructions appear to have been written in non-translated English and are terrific. Parts and finish are excellent and first sailings are fantastic. Why kids waste time playing games with their thumbs when such amazing toys are available is beyond me. Kudos to rchobbiesoutlet for fast service and response to an inquiry also.

Arrived promptly in good shape, It took a while to tie all knots and thread bowsies. After waiting a week for the pond to thaw, everything went well, and second time there were other df65's there. Everthing works well and is a speedy boat

Great value! At under $300 this RC model yacht beats the competition. Build quality is excellent and it comes with everything you need to start rc sailing. I was also impressed with the transmitter-receiver range (at least 100m). There is quite a bit of assembly required but this was fun with the clear instruction manual. What you are left with is a serious model racing yacht with full range of adjustments for sail trimming to suit various wind conditions. Full marks Joysway!

 DESIGN RULES

A one design r/c model racing yacht, the 25.8″ Dragon Force 65 was a modified RG65 Class boat derived from Mark Dick’s narrow hull RG65 ICE design. The Dragon Force features an ABS molded hull, profiled aluminum fin, molded plastic rudder, shroudless rig, carbon mast and booms, ball raced kicker/gooseneck fitting, and watertight construction. Joysway (the manufacturer) provides the Dragon Force as a near complete model requiring only assembly of the standing rigging and deck sail control lines (an A Rig is supplied), installation of keel and rudder, and addition of batteries. Electronics are installed, and a boat stand and radio/transmitter are included.

The Dragon Force 65 is the work of designers Mike Weston, John Tushingham and Mark Dicks who began collaborating with Joysway in 2011 to develop a high performing but inexpensive r/c model racing yacht. Time constraints on the project required the design team to adopt an existing class/design that had already demonstrated serious performance, and to modify the design to make it affordable. The RG65 (a developmental class) “ICE” design was considered the best candidate. To insure close performance sailing and modest cost, restricted design rules would also be required. The result was the one design Dragon Force 65 introduced in 2013. The Dragon Force 65 is already sailed worldwide with large followings around the world.

The Dragon Force 65 Class Rules require the boat to be raced “as supplied by” the manufacturer with no modifications except those articulated in the rules as “permitted changes.” A+, A, B and C Rigs are permissible (dimensions are provided), as are after market sails. Some substitution of electronic equipment and rigging materials is  allowed as well. A number of the permitted changes improve the integrity (reliability) of the sailboat, and were added as the design team improved the manufactured product (Dragon Force 65 Version 6 is now on the market). Work on improving the Dragon Force is ongoing, and additional allowable modifications are published as “Hints & Tips”. Text of these is available at the UK Dragon Force 65 web site. An excellent illustrated version of the “ Hints & Tips ” is provided by Abersoch Boatyards in the UK.

Warranty & Returns Policy

At Toys"R"Us we'd like you to know that we are here to help you if something goes wrong with a product that you purchase from us. In order to assist you to ensure everything goes smoothly with your purchase and delivery, please be certain to:

  • Step 1 : As soon as your package arrives, check that the correct items have been sent to you. Whilst we have multiple checks as we prepare your shipment, unintentional human errors can occur and the best time to verify everything is perfect is as soon as you receive your delivery. Check the cartons carefully as parts or small items can sometimes move around and easily be caught inside packaging or void-fill.
  • Step 2 : Do not throw away any of the original packaging materials, such as boxes, instructions, inserts, bags etc. until you are satisfied with your order. If a problem arises it is normally much easier to resolve if everything is together - there's nothing worse than contacting us regarding a missing part and learning that it is carefully protected inside the foam protector, on its way to land fill in your local municipality because it was accidentally disarded.
  • Step 3 : Carefully inspect all merchandise, taking care not to damage packaging.
  • Step 4 : Please keep the supplied Toys"R"Us invoice or packing slip / invoice slip with your important records. This helps us to more easily track the history of your purchase. If a problem occurs you can refer back to this information (or the order reference information that we email to you) to quickly enable us to understand which product you are referring to when you need assistance from us.
  • Step 5 : Enjoy your new product!

The Dragonforce 65 is the newest addition to range of sanctioned classes after being sanctioned in 2018. It is 65cm, weighs around 1.3 kilos and fits in the back of most cars for easy transport.

It was developed from the RG65 Class as a Restricted Class to meet the growing demand for lower-cost radio-controlled yachts as an entry-level for the larger classes. However, its enormous popularity has seen every Club building fleets through new and existing members.

Get connected, workers force funding for moscow metro.

By Boris Kagarlitsky and Renfrey Clarke

MOSCOW — During the Gorbachev years, the popular Russian journalist Alexander Kabakov published a science fiction story entitled The Non-Returnee, in which he described the horrors of life after perestroika. He depicted a Moscow in which normal life had disintegrated, there was shooting on the streets, and one part of the city was at war with another. The only thing that still worked properly was the city's underground rail system, the metro.

Residents of the Russian capital are simply incapable of imagining the metro shutting down. But it now seems that a continuation of neo-liberal "reforms" is fraught with just this danger.

In Soviet times, the building of metro systems — not just in Moscow, but throughout the country — was funded centrally. The necessary sums were simply not to be found in local budgets.

Now the metro systems have been handed over to local authorities. In Moscow there is one transport policy, another in St Petersburg, and in provincial centres yet another. The uniform fares and technical standards of former years are now things of the past. Every city tries to solve its own problems as best it can.

In the recently adopted federal budget, no provision was made for the centralised funding of urban underground rail systems. City treasury authorities also refused to finance work on building and maintaining metro lines.

The cost of these tasks has been put at 3.4 trillion roubles, close to US$1 billion dollars. An immense sum for an impoverished country, this is nevertheless somewhat less than the Russian government, according to heavily understated official figures, spent up to the end of January waging its war in Chechnya.

Meanwhile, the Moscow city authorities would not seem to be short of money either, when it comes to funding projects dear to the mayor and his acolytes. The Moscow administration is currently spending vast sums building a concrete replica of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, demolished in the 1930s. The city government is also outlaying a huge slice of its budget constructing an underground complex beneath the Manezh Square, and is now promising to erect the world's tallest skyscraper on the banks of the Moscow River.

Extremely dubious from the economic, architectural and environmental points of view, these projects have drawn numerous public protests. According to experts, none of them is likely to be fully realised. But none of them has encountered problems with finance.

If the funds needed for the Moscow metro were not found, commentators warned during January, all plans for developing the system further would have to be postponed. There would be no new lines or stations, and thousands of metro construction workers would lose their jobs. The cost of a metro journey, currently 400 roubles, would rise to 1800. There would be long intervals between trains, and one heavily used line would have to shut down entirely.

Executives of Metrostroy, the enterprise responsible for building and maintaining metro lines, warned that the escalators at many stations would have to be stopped, and that accidents underground would become a routine matter. For that matter, Muscovites would not be safe from accidents above ground either. Metro construction workers constantly pump water out of foundation pits and new tunnels. If this work were to cease, the soil would begin to subside and cave in.

At a conference in mid-January, the Metrostroy trade union resolved to call a strike for January 31 in protest against the disintegration of Moscow's underground rail transit system. The city authorities then declared that they would not allow the trade unions to force the redistribution of budget funds. It seemed that the prospect of the collapse of the Russian capital's transport system, and even the danger that people would be killed, troubled them much less than the need to observe "budget discipline".

Then the city authorities began to think again. Unlike most Russian workers, the people who build and run the Moscow metro are not without industrial muscle. The economy of the Russian capital depends on millions of workers being able to travel across the city each day by public transport. The cost to employers of even a brief metro stoppage would be enormous.

As they planned their action, the metro workers had a variety of effective tactics to choose from. If construction workers stopped pumping water from new tunnels, various existing lines would soon be flooded. Metro train drivers would not even have to strike; simply by following regulations and refusing to take out carriages with mechanical faults, they could cut the number of trains per hour to a handful.

The Moscow authorities had little reason to hope that the public would blame the workers rather than the city officials for the resulting chaos. Consequently, the prospect of strike action on the metro appears to have caused the city administration genuine alarm. This evidently penetrated to President Boris Yeltsin, for whom Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has been a vital political ally. Late in January, Yeltsin ordered the Russian government to come up with the funds needed to continue metro construction in several Russian cities, including the capital.

The future of Russia's metro systems is far from assured. Notoriously, funds budgeted or otherwise promised by the government are delivered late, and rarely in full. Despite Yeltsin's instructions, the new allocations for construction and maintenance will fall immediately under the gaze of cost-cutting zealots in the Finance Ministry.

Defenders of public transport, however, have the perfect answer to the financial hatchet-wielders: just take the money from the funds assigned for fighting the war in Chechnya.

Oyster 565 yacht test: This bluewater cruiser marks the rebirth of a legend

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 9, 2020

Is this Oyster 565 the boat that secures the British yard’s future? Toby Hodges takes an exclusive test sail

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

For the sake of this iconic British brand, the new Oyster 565 can’t just be good, it has to be exceptional. Nothing less will do. When the Oyster 825 Polina Star III lost her keel and sank off the coast of Spain in July 2015, the fortune it subsequently cost Oyster directly contributed to the company going into receivership.

Its backers, Dutch firm HTP Investments, ceased to provide financial support in February 2018 and the company went into administration. When gaming software entrepreneur Richard Hadida bought Oyster six weeks later , many wondered how he could rebuild the credibility of the brand and turn the business around.

So all eyes were on the Oyster 565 when it launched at the Southampton Boat Show in September. This is the first completely new design under Hadida’s watch and it sits at the core of the British firm’s market. This is the yard’s most popular size, replacing the 56 (75 sold) and 575 (45 sold).

There is the option of an extended transom design with tender garage, but all owners so far have favoured this standard shape with davits for carrying a dinghy. This yacht has a substantial bathing platform, alongside which you can tie up the dinghy. Photo: Brian Carlin

Hadida has introduced some key developments to help it succeed. Oyster now moulds its hulls in-house rather than subcontracting this work, and he wanted third party oversight, so a Lloyd’s Register surveyor inspects all yachts in build once a week to approve the design, materials and build quality of the hulls and decks. This brings a level of assurance to new owners and should restore faith in the build quality.

The new owner introduced a diverse group of board members, including designer Rob Humphreys and sailor and former Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan as well as other business authorities. He also put the Oyster Rendezvous regattas and successful Oyster World Rally back on track. However, this groundwork counts for nothing if the Oyster 565 flops.

I travelled to Barcelona to spend two days testing Panthalassa , the first 565 to launch. Knowing there is a huge amount riding on this model, I wondered whether it would deliver. The answer is a resounding yes. The Oyster 565 is one of the finest production yachts I have ever sailed.

The design is contemporary and sympathetic to Oyster’s existing line-up, but with more volume, comfort, simplicity, speed and stowage space than its predecessors. The deck and interior layout is right up to date, the engineering behind the scenes is of high quality, and the finish is a step beyond what almost any other production yard can offer.

Rustler 57 review: This traditional British cruiser was built to rule the waves

Rustler’s stunning new flagship, the Rustler 57 may cause you to re-evaluate what comfort is all about when cruising

Times have changed

I found the Oyster 565 berthed alongside an Oyster 56 in Port Ginesta, which conveniently illustrated how hull shapes and deck layouts have changed in 20 years. The Oyster 565 has around 30cm more freeboard, the beam is carried much further aft, and it has a broader transom. The cockpit in particular is much larger, easier and safer to get into, and there are no sheets for guests to trip over.

The design strikes a balance between respecting the legacy of the 56 and the ten-year-old Oyster 575 , and introducing modern features such as a flush foredeck, clean lines and a greater hull volume. Some traditional cruisers may mourn the loss of a skeg-hung rudder and cutter-rigged headsails, but the ease with which you can handle this Oyster 565 in most conditions should convince the majority that modern design wins here.

A robust bowsprit extends the yacht’s length to 59ft. Although the hull length of the new Oyster 565 is shorter than the 575 it replaces, its waterline length is longer and it boasts 10% more volume. Its full bow sections also create space for a sail locker, a crucial asset for stowing the offwind sail needed to supplement the blade jib.

The Oyster 565 is clearly the product of a yard used to building high-end large yachts, as opposed to one pushing up in size into a level of engineering and quality with which it is less familiar. This is perhaps why Oyster describes it as a ‘pocket superyacht ’.

In this respect, the appointment of Paul Adamson as Oyster’s chief commercial officer was shrewd. Adamson is a seasoned Oyster skipper who took Eddie Jordan’s Oyster 885 Lush around the world (the yacht now belongs to Richard Hadida). He brings practical, hands-on expertise and big-boat knowledge to the yard.

The Oyster 565’s £1.5m price tag is steep, but it is comparable to similar-sized yachts from competitor brands and, unusually, comes with a very high standard spec. This includes hydraulic thrusters, furlers, and windlass, tri-radial sails, powered winches, a generator and a full electronic navigation package. You’ll even find 100m of 12mm chain in the anchor locker.

The Oyster 565 comes ready to go, with all the equipment the company knows will make for comfortable ocean cruising , gleaned from decades of experience and owner feedback.

It is immediately obvious as soon as you go on board that every detail has been thought through. The high guardrails have boarding gates built in. If berthed stern-to, a cassette-style passerelle (an extra option) extends at the push of a button, and its handrail rises automatically. Moving forward between the twin wheels, you enter a generous-sized, deep centre cockpit.

A bluewater yacht needs to have a kindly motion at sea, be easy it is to sail and remain comfortable when heeled. During our trials, the Oyster 565 was to prove genteel, safe and enjoyable to sail.

Oyster-565-yacht-test-bow-running-shot-credit-brian-carlin

The 565 is simplicity itself to get on and off a berth. It comes with retractable bow and stern thrusters as standard, which allow you to spin the boat around its keel. The hydraulic thrusters are powerful enough to park sideways against a crosswind and easily correct any misalignment when approaching the dock.

Easier sailhandling

The hydraulic furling makes it equally simple to deploy sails even in a strong breeze or awkward seaway. I am not usually a fan of in-mast furling mainsails, but here the ability for one person to set and furl away the main without leaving the helm outweighs any negatives.

Oyster has also ensured that you can manually furl sails should the power or hydraulics fail. Both the mainsail and jib furlers have sockets that allow you to winch the sail by hand or, easier still, operate them with a cordless drill (a fully charged 18V drill will reportedly manage 15 mainsail furls).

The blade jib enables the Oyster 565 to point higher and tack or gybe faster and more easily than previous Oysters with cutter rigs, and without the risk of yankee or genoa sheets whipping around the cockpit. It also proved the ideal sail for our long beats upwind in 12-20 knot winds. The Oyster 565 is a powerful design with a medium displacement, able to maintain consistent speed with a soft motion through the waves that makes for a quiet and comfortable ship.

The twin rudders provide the helmsman with total control and forgiving handling. When the apparent breeze reached the high 20s and the leeward gunwale was immersed, we were on the verge of needing a reef, yet the helm remained light, with only a slight increase in weather helm. This means light work for an autopilot. You can really load the boat, so would need to keep an eye on true wind speeds and when to reduce sail.

The test yacht’s bright red asymmetric spinnaker helped us get the most from the Oyster 565 offwind. Again it was the consistent speeds that stood out: 9-9.5 knots in flat water with winds in the low teens, rising to double figures when going with the swell. Once the breeze was up to a Force 5 on our second day we were sailing consistently at 10 knots. I was hooked: this is an indulgent way to tick off mile after mile.

Oyster-565-yacht-test-helm-credit-rick-tomlinson

The cockpit is split into helming and guest areas. The latter has deep benches, a large, fixed table with insulated cool box, a good sprayhood with large, clear panels and an optional bimini or full cockpit enclosure. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Most sail controls and sheets are within reach of the twin pedestals yet clear of the guest cockpit. When standing at the helm it is possible to straddle the coaming to release a sheet or reach the powered winch buttons during a tack.

Short-handed control

For owners who want to sail short-handed, however, it might be more practical to have the primaries closer to the helms, allowing them to hand steer the boat through a tack rather than relying on an autopilot. Leading the jib sheet to the aft (spinnaker) winch might make more sense, as it is closer to the helm and easier to reach without leaving the cockpit.

The mainsheet winch is directly abaft and in reach of the helmsman. It feels awkward turning round to trim the main, but I guess it is something you would get used to, or would settle for engaging the autopilot before trimming the main. There is currently no option for a traveller. Adamson believes that, for most owners, clear access to the cockpit is paramount, and a powerful vang was chosen to control the main instead.

Safe and secure on deck

The distance between the two wheels is perfect. Footwells help ensure that you feel in, rather than on top of, the boat while helming – that was not always the case on previous models. And wraparound backrests at the seats and handrails on the pedestals both create a feeling of security around the helm areas.

Moving forward along the wide side decks also feels safe thanks to high guardrails and handrails along the coachroof. Outboard shrouds and inboard jib tracks leave a comparatively clear side deck. The shrouds disappear neatly into composite chainplates below the toerail.

Going below feels less secure when the Oyster 565 is heeled, however. The flat companionway steps are steep, and curved sides would be more practical. The interior has plenty of handholds and solid fiddles, but there is so much headroom in the saloon I could only just reach the overhead handrail on the centreline.

Oyster-565-yacht-test-saloon-window

When sailing, you have this hypnotic view from the saloon of the sea foaming past the leeward hull windows. Photo: Toby Hodges

It is easier to move forward along the starboard side of the saloon, though, and elsewhere the layout suits life at an angle. It is remarkably quiet below decks, a hush belied by the mesmerising sight of the sea foaming past the big leeward hull windows.

Behind the scenes

The British yard has stuck to a tried and tested interior layout for the Oyster 565 and has furnished and finished it impeccably. The standard of joiner work is as good as any you’ll find at production yacht level. The galley and aft cabin would be hard to better, and the utility cabin amidships, a workroom-cum-laundry with an optional pilot berth and access to the walk-in engine room, further compliments the proven layout.

Unusually at this size, Oyster offers the option of a master cabin forward with two double cabins aft. But unless you plan to spend long periods berthed stern-to, the standard owner suite aft with the magnificent views it provides will surely win every time.

Oyster-565-yacht-test-mid-cabin-credit-rick-tomlinson

The ensuite owner’s aft cabin has an abundance of light and views, good headroom and stowage – it’s difficult to believe you’re actually aboard a yacht of less than 60ft. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Every part of the accommodation is used to its full potential, and stowage is maximised without any part feeling cramped. Practical touches include the cedar-lined, lit and ventilated wardrobes, clever use of indirect lighting, and deeply fiddled work surfaces that are shaped, moulded and laminated in-house.

However, it’s what lies behind the scenes that impressed me most. All services are easy to access for maintenance. The headlining is mounted on Velcro, while floorboards use the Fastmount panel system – although Oyster really needs to find a way to stop these sole panels creaking as it spoils an otherwise quiet interior.

Look below the saloon sole and you’ll find a proper, deep bilge sump in the keel stub. Bilges throughout the boat drain here through limber holes, which ensures any water stays in the lowest part and doesn’t slosh around. This is the most logical place for bilge pumps and by mounting them on removable plates Oyster has ensured they can easily be lifted to clean the strainers.

Oyster-565-yacht-test-under-floor-hatch

Sole boards lift to allow access to underfloor systems and the deep bilge. Photo: Toby Hodges

Installed beneath the companionway are two large bronze seawater inlets, one for the domestic side, such as fridge and air con, the other for the engine and generator. These systems are linked so that if one becomes blocked you can shut it down and use the other. It is also comforting to see the surrounding pipes all clearly labelled ‘Lloyds approved’.

The companionway steps lift for stowage and access to the top of the 11kW generator. Here you notice the thickness of the sound insulation. Adamson says Oyster has learned a lot about this through building its larger models. The engine room, for example, is surrounded by plywood with a high-density core and insulated with a composite of foam and sound-absorbing materials. When the engine is on tickover, it is almost impossible to hear it in the cockpit.

See more pictures and videos of the Oyster 565 on the official Oyster Yachts website.

Besides walk-in access to starboard, panels below the galley sink can be removed for access to the port side of the engine room. The engine block sits on flexible mountings, below which is a sump that prevents any oil from running into the main bilge area. There is an electronic pump-out for an oil change, a powered fuel polisher and a water-in-fuel alarm – systems normally only found on larger yachts.

The longer you look, the more you appreciate the careful planning and the intricate detail that has gone into this yacht.

The Oyster 565 is a seriously impressive yacht. It’s a modern design, through and through: good-looking and spacious. It’s certainly expensive, but for good reason, as it includes an extremely high standard spec. And the engineering quality and level of finish really raises the bar. No yacht is perfect, but in terms of design and execution the Oyster 565 is as close as you’ll find on a series-built cruising yacht. This new model issues a very clear statement: Oyster is back.

The Virgin Islands are a popular charter destination for people enjoying their first charter and for families. The 50 islands have become one of the most popular sailing grounds, with steady Trade winds, gentle currents and lots of idyllic, sheltered anchorages.

Windward Islands (St Vincent and Grenadines)

Named for its Trade winds and ocean currents, the Windwards were the destination of choice for pirates. It is the ideal cruising ground for chilled charters. With calm seas and consistent winds (10-25 knots) cruising is effortless, with line-of-sight passages that make island hopping a joy.

Leeward Islands (Antigua, St Martins, St Barts)

This chain of islands sits at the meeting point where the north-eastern Caribbean Sea meets the western Atlantic. Created by volcanic activity at the end of the last Ice Age, the arc of islands stretches southwest, offering an eclectic mix of untouched desert islands with some of the most luxurious holiday destinations in the region.

Greek Ionian Islands

Located on the west coast of Greece, the Ionian Islands are known for their stunning white sand beaches and lush greenery. There are six main archipelagos: Corfu, Zakynthos, Paxi (Paxos) in the north and Lefkada, Kefalonia and Ithaki in the south with the most popular being Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia.

Maine, in the USA, is renowned for its dramatic lighthouses, rugged mountains and enchanting sea life, found just 20 miles from the coast. With a coastline just shy of 3,500 miles, there is a lot to discover.

The Balearics

One of the most popular destinations in the western Mediterranean, the Balearics are the perfect yacht charter destination with a choice of unspoiled anchorages and coves, lush landscapes and clear turquoise seas with white sand beaches.

Archelon: On Board the 37 Metre Oyster Sailing Yacht

Step on board  Archelon , the new 37 metre Oyster sailing yacht designed by  Humphreys Yacht Design Ltd

It is not every day that you run a superyacht down a shingle beach alongside windsurfers, kayaks and paddleboards. Stopping the traffic and closing the busy main road that runs along the Lee-on-Solent shoreline also drew plenty of attention as the 37.45-metre hull and deck were rolled on to the beach before being craned on to a waiting barge.

Moving the first Oyster 1225, Archelon , from her moulding facility at HMS Daedalus to Oyster’s Southampton yard at Saxon Wharf on the south coast of the UK was a major exercise that had been meticulously planned. The level of detail that went into the operation mirrors the careful thinking that has underwritten every aspect of the 1225’s design.

When Richard Hadida bought Oyster Yachts in 2018 and a new era for the yard began, the yacht was already in progress – at the vanguard of a new breed of Oyster and one of few designs that he would keep on. “The first 1225 was probably halfway through her build in Southampton and we completed it with Pendennis ,” he says. “Oyster built all the bespoke cabinetry and interior joinery and under our design and guidance Pendennis fitted it.”

On the face of it, Archelon looks just as you’d expect of a modern Oyster, with her distinctive, tinted wraparound saloon windows and plumb bow, a fixed bowsprit and vertical “seascape” portlights in her topsides. But this is an Oyster superyacht that has been designed to cater for an impressively broad range of activities and destinations. From cruising in the familiar grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean , to more adventurous high-latitude destinations and circumnavigations , the 1225 is built to take on adventures with ease.

“One of the owner’s fundamental requirements was for a fast cruising yacht that could accommodate his family as well as another family or two,” says the owner’s representative, who oversaw the whole build. “Sharing the experiences with friends and family was key, with room for up to 12 guests when the boat was at sea. The result is five guest cabins aft, with a sixth guest cabin forward if necessary, along with two crew cabins forward.”

The overall layout certainly flows beautifully, with the upper saloon providing a well-protected al fresco-style dining area that leads down to the spacious lower saloon before two sets of companionway steps descend further to the main accommodation.

The ability to configure the four guest cabins as either twins or doubles is an example of Archelon’s versatility below decks. Another is the snug – a spacious cabin forward and to starboard that is pitched as a playroom/ cinema/home schooling area for children (or it could be used as cabin).

Throughout her accommodation the joinery is a pale stained ash and walnut, but when it comes to upholstery she’s far more complex. A collaboration between the owner, the owner’s interior designer Annie Hale and Marcus Wright (then senior interior designer at Oyster Yachts), the upholstery scheme comprises more than 100 luxury fabrics.

When it comes to engineering she’s a more conventional affair, with a 450hp Scania D113 main engine, a pair of Kohler 55kW generators and a Mastervolt system for the inverters, chargers and 1,440Ah lithium-ion battery bank. “The ability to run silent overnight when she is at rest was another important criteria and the Mastervolt lithium ion battery bank is at the heart of this,” explains Archelon’s project manager Ewan Hind.

On deck she boasts an impressively sleek and clutter-free layout, where hydraulically powered captive reel winches for the main halyard, jib sheet and mainsheet keep the number of exposed lines to a minimum.

“Right from the outset we knew that this was a yacht that needed to operate in a variety of environments, so the rig and sailplan configuration was especially important,” says Hind. “As such, the Southern Spars in-boom furling system and the North Sails mainsail were arranged to take a third reef, along with a dedicated storm trysail track on the mast.” There’s also a hydraulic furling inner forestay that will be especially useful for passage- making or high-latitude cruising and can be swapped for a Kevlar inner forestay to carry a hanked-on sail for light use.

So when it comes to her performance under sail, it is perhaps no surprise that she is a comfortable, capable cruiser with long legs.

A snapshot of her performance confirms that all-round capability: in 14 knots of true wind she climbs upwind at ease at 11 knots and almost matches the wind speed on a reach. While in stronger breezes of 20 to 25 knots she will sit happily at 14 to 15 knots. As on the Oyster 885, twin rudders were chosen for performance and efficiency. They can be smaller than a single rudder and therefore offer less drag, while on a heel they remain vertical and in the water.

“Her DNA is very much that of the Oyster 825 and 885s,” says her designer Rob Humphreys. “She is a slender form that carries displacement well. She’s a stiff boat too and with her twin rudders she can be pressed and yet still retain good balance and control. The upshot is that she is a very good all-rounder and, while we were never looking to make her a lightweight flyer, she would hold her own, I’m sure, in a superyacht regatta.”

So while it’s unlikely that Archelon will stop the traffic as she did on the beach at Lee-on-Solent, it is certain that she’ll still turn heads.

Archelon is listed for charter with Ocean Independence .

Sailboat Review: Oyster 495 Combines Performance and Power In Under 50 Feet

  • By Kimball Livingston
  • October 27, 2023

Oyster 495 sailboat

Few boats would merit a glance from a savvy, experienced skipper looking to consolidate the best qualities of his performance cruiser and his motoryacht into just one boat.

Someone might even ask: “Are you kidding me? Can you do that?”

Enter the Oyster 495.

As the smallest yacht the company has developed from concept since 2005, the 495 is rigorously detailed. It is true to the heritage of a builder where a 50-footer has become the entry-level model.

For this latest raised-salon offering, Oyster created a new facility in Hythe, on the Southampton shores of southern England. The aim is to build 12 boats a year, and sales to date suggest that this figure is not overly ambitious.

I encountered Genevieve , the well-traveled Hull No. 1, in Southern California, where the boat had been delivered to the owner in Santa Barbara after being shown extensively in Europe. She was purchased to replace a performance cruiser and a powerboat.

First impressions count, and the 495 makes a great one. If you’re switching over from a different brand, forget about bringing along your plates and glassware. All of that is provided, with subtle logos and fitted stowage. Mood lighting is available at the touch of a button. The TV raises and disappears with another button. In the guest stateroom forward, hatches overhead open in opposite directions. The queen berth in the owner’s stateroom could be a boat-show sales tool, but the cabin top is equipped for the lee cloths you will need when the boat is doing what it is meant to do: go places.

To that end, an aluminum mast with electric furling is standard, but Genevieve is equipped with a Seldén carbon rig with in-mast electric furling and a hydraulics package including a mainsheet, vang, outhaul, backstay, and in-boom ram. In operation, it was whisper-quiet.

The twin wheels offer clear sightlines from secure footing, along with command posts that have buttons to deploy and furl sails, and to adjust everything adjustable without straining a finger or risking a hangnail. Lewmar EVO primaries are handy, just outboard of the helm stations. Optional dual thrusters make everyone a hero going and coming to the dock, and smaller items such as pre-rigged preventers speak to that shadowy concierge who seems to have been everywhere.

With four of us aboard, the cockpit was more than generous. I imagined many sociable scenes to come as the sails came out. The Yanmar saildrive was so quiet, it had to go off for me to even notice it had been on. Put that down to sandwich insulation glued, not screwed.

The breeze was single digits, not enough to make the boat light up under a 105 percent jib, and we were dragging a wide transom and two rudders. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable sailing. I also appreciated seeing the cabin house square to the seating, to make a comfortable backrest looking aft, stretched out on passage. Rounding the forward backing the way some manufacturers do may work when you’re not going anywhere, but what is a boat for?

The cockpit is laid out to walk on a single level back to a full-beam lazarette, which has ample stowage and access to the steering, backstay, exhaust and seacocks. Step back farther, and you are stepping down a reverse transom to a shower and an electronically operated swim platform. When the boat is stern-tied, that will be the boarding ladder.

Belowdecks is bright, with close attention to ventilation. The opening coachroof windows in the salon will delight passengers in a tropical anchorage with the breeze wafting through. Batteries and tankage are centered under the salon sole, focusing the weight where it belongs. A U-shaped galley, two steps down to port, places most of the cook’s needs at hand in a space where it will be easy to brace underway, and the cook is not isolated from crew and guests. The twin sinks are on centerline for efficient drainage.

The saloon table lowers to bed height for those who are overblessed with kids or grandkids, and the step-down nav station is separated but not isolated. A swing-out computer screen is here, along with CZone control and monitoring instead of fuse panels. A freezer is abaft the nav station, where it won’t see a lot of traffic unless it’s stocked with ice cream for those kids.

Opposite the nav station, twin doors open wide to an engine compartment thoughtfully laid out to be serviced without provoking naughty words. Clear labeling matters, and I liked seeing the Panda generator within a sound-insulated compartment.

All the way aft, the owner’s stateroom has 6 feet, 4 inches of headroom, a sofa, cedar-lined lockers, escape hatches, and Oyster’s signature vertical portlights for a special view of the world. Forward of the salon is a cozy over/under double that shares a head and shower with the bright and airy forward stateroom. Nowhere above or belowdecks does the level of fit-and-finish fall short.

Oyster describes the hull as an “overspecified laminate resin structure with a combination of stringers and frames for extreme strength and durability.” I believe it. Genevieve had the L-shaped standard keel and a draft of 7 feet, 5 inches. A shoal-draft keel is an option.

Lunch waited ashore, creating an opportunity to observe how magically the sails disappeared and how comfortably the boat motored at 9-plus knots. It’s replacing a powerboat, remember. There was also a moment to demonstrate that, under power, the Oyster 495 will spin in its own length. That gave me a grin too.
