Scenic Eclipse Shows Off its Innovative Design and Stunning Interior in New Video

Boston & Vancouver, August 2019 – Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours introduced the world’s first Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse , this month and has now released video footage of much of its stunning interior. Opening a new era in ocean cruising with a new benchmark in innovation, design and technology, the ultra-luxury Scenic Eclipse combines 6-star luxury with expedition-level discovery, giving guests the opportunity to explore above and beyond what was previously only possible for a handful of hardy souls.

Guests can enjoy a choice of ten included dining experiences, from alfresco meals in the Yacht Club, to casual fare in the Azure Bar & Café, Lumiere’s French haute cuisine and the exclusive Chefs Table degustation. The ship’s 114 suites, all with verandahs and private butler service, range in size from the generous 345² Verandah Suites to the opulent 2,645² two-bedroom Owners Penthouse Suite, with a separate sleep, lounge and dining areas, spa bathroom and a large private terrace with jacuzzi.

Intimate and luxurious, guests aboard Scenic Eclipse can rejuvenate in Senses Spa, with its wide range of treatments, infra-red and Finnish sauna, spa and plunge pools; and venture beyond the horizon – both above and below on an excursion on one of two on board six-guest helicopters and a six-guest submarine, capable of diving to nearly 1,000 feet. For those who prefer land adventures, Scenic Eclipse ’s Discovery team and guides leads guests on nature and cultural encounters, visiting everything from historic cities to ancient monuments.

The itineraries take in many of the world’s more remote and stunningly beautiful regions. From Antarctica to the Northwest Passage to the Greek Islands of the Mediterranean to Europe’s northern reaches and North and South America’s coastal cities and landscapes. Now accepting bookings through 2022, the company has just released the new 2020-2022 brochure, detailing six new itineraries comprising of 47 departures spanning 38 countries, and offering visits to 68 new ports.

On September 10, 2019, Scenic Eclipse will be officially christened in New York City by Godmother Dame Helen Mirren and then off on additional sailings in North and South America as it makes its way to Antarctica where its innovative technology offers guests the highest standard in exploration cruising: innovative zero-speed stabilizer fins, 50% larger than standard to provide greater stability by cutting the ship’s roll by more than 85%; the highest passenger ship ice class rating – Polar Class 6; redundancies in propulsion, navigation, safety systems and food refrigeration; state-of-the-art bridge systems; and a GPS dynamic positioning system allowing for stationary positioning without an anchor, reducing environmental impact and enhancing safety during Zodiac operations.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours has grown over its 33-year history to include award-winning, all-inclusive escorted tours that take participants to many of the world’s most fascinating destinations and, since 2008, truly all-inclusive, five-star river cruises in Europe, SE Asia, Russia and Egypt on its 15 Space-Ships. Sister brand Emerald Waterways has seven Star-Ships offering European river sailings with an eighth (Emerald Harmony) launching this year for SE Asia’s Mekong River. Exclusive charters are offered on SE Asia’s Irrawaddy River; the Volga River in Russia; yacht cruises out of Croatia; and Egypt’s Nile River.

Inside the ‘Scenic Eclipse,’ the World’s Most Luxurious Expedition Megayacht

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours' Scenic Luxury discovery yacht

There’s no reason why scientific discovery and luxury have to be mutually exclusive. That’s the thinking of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours , whose just-launched expedition cruise ship, Scenic Eclipse , attempts to wed the two in one massive, 551-foot megayacht .

After years of delays, the 228-passenger ship finally launched last month and was christened by Dame Helen Mirren in New York on Tuesday. Referred to by Scenic as a “discovery yacht,” the cutting-edge boat features its own helicopters, a fleet of Zodiac boats, a submarine and a near-endless list of high-end amenities, all of which help it set a new high-end standard for expedition-style travel. It will travel to 68 ports around the world, spending half the year in Antarctica and the Arctic , the two main expedition cruise destinations.

“In terms of innovation, technology and design, [ Scenic Eclipse ] is second to none,” the company’s chairman and founder Glen Moroney said last month. “The onboard helicopters and submarine and our handcrafted itineraries that take our guests to 38 countries in some of the world’s most stunning and remote locations.”

And it would appear that no expense was spared to take ocean exploration to the next level. For instance, the boat boasts 114 cabins, each of which is a sizable suite—including a living room, veranda and a butler service. The $10,000-per-night, two-bedroom Owner’s Penthouse Suite reportedly measures a staggering 2,659 square feet. Spa suites, meanwhile, include a double-sized Philippe Starck-designed jacuzzi, steam shower and light therapy.

The luxury doesn’t stop inside the rooms, either. The Scenic Eclipse features 10 different restaurants—with cuisines ranging from French to Japanese—overseen by executive chef Tom Goetter. There are also eight bars, one of which serves over 100 top-shelf varieties of whiskey. If you’re an aspiring chef yourself, the yacht boasts a cooking classroom, where guests can learn how to make the delicious dishes they’ve eaten. A built-in theater offers films and lectures. There’s also plenty of beauty and health amenities, like the 5,920-square-foot Senses Spa, which includes Scandanavian-style pools, a gym and a Pilates studio, as well as a hair salon.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours' Scenic Luxury discovery yacht

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ Scenic Luxury expedition cruise ship  Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

In addition to the onboard amenities, the yacht will also actively help you explore the areas away from it. The Scenic Eclipse   includes two six-passenger helicopters, a first for an expedition cruise ship, and a fleet of Zodiac boats for adventuring. There’s also a six-passenger submarine, the Scenic Neptune , that can reach depths of 1,000 feet. And because this is an expedition cruise ship, it was built to withstand the elements. It holds the preeminent ice-class rating for a passenger vessel, Polar Class 6, which means passengers have nothing to worry about during voyages in Antarctica and the Arctic.

With all these luxury and technology features, it’s easy to see why a trip on the Scenic Eclipse doesn’t come cheap. Fares start at at $6,395 per person based on a double occupancy, though polar expeditions can cost much more. But that fare does come with a lot, including air travel, pre-departure hotel, all meals and drinks. Helicopter and submarine rides, of course, are extra.

TPG's first look at expedition cruise ship Scenic Eclipse: What I loved and what needs work

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Scenic Eclipse, the James Bond of ships, is elegant yet formidable.

The ship is the first expedition-focused vessel from Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, a cruise line known for its upscale river cruises and land-based trips.

Until recently, expedition ships were spartan, offering only bare-bones amenities and less-than-swanky accommodations. However, Scenic is among a number of lines bringing luxury to the adventure cruising scene. I expected the line would get the upscale touches right, and indeed, Eclipse is over-the-top elegant without trying too hard. However, does the ship blend style and function?

The answer: Yes. Seamlessly.

I've just disembarked my first-ever expedition cruise, an 11-day voyage to the Arctic, and I'm in love. Not just with the stunning scenery and cute animals, but with this ship which, like the polar bears we watched from its observation decks, commands respect because it's built to survive the terrain and is fully capable of doing so.

Scenic Eclipse is small in size, holding only 200 passengers. It's able to visit remote places that many other cruise ships can't. In that, it feels exclusive.

However, its welcoming interior belies a reinforced hull that can break through first-year ice with ease. I soaked in the magic of the region in absolute comfort while surrounded by landscapes many early explorers found to be deadly. The disparity was thrilling.

Nearly three years after it first set sail — and more than two years after its initial voyages were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic — the ship quietly arrived in the Arctic for the first time, bringing with it improvements from initial rounds of passenger feedback. Here are my impressions of the first in Scenic's line of luxury expedition vessels.

What I loved

Form and function.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Scenic Eclipse resembles a large yacht rather than a standard cruise ship — and its aura of sophistication and exclusivity made me feel like royalty. A powerhouse in the luxury space, Scenic knows a thing or two about pampering its passengers, so I wasn't surprised that the line nailed that part.

What fascinated me more was how well the ship was built to handle the wilderness of polar cruising and how successfully practical spaces were incorporated into its gorgeous design. In other words, the vessel isn't merely pretty; it's functional. The juxtaposition doesn't go unnoticed.

Underneath the ship's sleek exterior are a slew of amenities. They include a central lounge and bar serving 130 different whiskies (all of them free), a theater with cushy leather lounge chairs instead of standard seating, a high-end spa, a specially designed kitchen space for cooking classes and even a submarine and pair of helicopters for passengers who want to take their excursions to the next level.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Mudrooms are standard on expedition ships. However, I was surprised by how Scenic Eclipse made this mundane room feel fancy with its leather seating, simple-but-polished design and orderly cubbies for storing Muck boots, which are provided to passengers for use during sailings.

It also doubles as well-organized storage for kayaking suits, booties, gloves and life jackets, which are doled out by the kayaking leaders before each excursion.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Everything — mudroom, laundry room, boot cleaners and water sports equipment storage on the lowest decks — is laid out to maximize efficiency and keep the grime away from other areas of the ship, allowing intrepid exploration to harmoniously coexist with the leisurely way of life on board.

Even the superstructure is designed to allow for upscale functionality, with the vessel's aft exterior walls able to fold in to allow room for the helicopters to take off and land. (Note: Scenic Eclipse is not allowed to use the helicopters in the Arctic.) It's also outfitted with stabilizers, so efficient we barely felt any movement during the voyage.

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the ship runs on cleaner-burning fuel. It also employs some fancy technology, such as a dynamic positioning system (instead of anchors, which can harm the ocean floor and wildlife living in the off-the-beaten-path places where it sails) that uses GPS coordinates and thrusters to keep the ship in one spot when it stops.

Public spaces

scenic eclipse yacht interior

My favorite space on the ship was the Scenic Lounge, where passengers can sprawl out in alcoves in what feels like a cozy living room flanked by the guest services desk and the aforementioned whiskey bar. It made me want to curl up on a couch and read in my pajamas, but I resisted the urge.

With furnishings crafted from sustainable materials, the lounge is the central location for daily trivia hosted by the entertainment staff, as well as the meeting point for daily excursions, which are organized by color groups.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

The observation lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and comfortable sitting areas, was my second-favorite onboard area. It was almost always underused, which meant I could find a quiet place to work, read (it's also the ship's library) or grab a cup of coffee while staring out at the scenery.

Sadly, the self-serve coffee machine was often empty, and when it worked, the drinks tasted watered down. The full wall of gourmet Kusmi teas made up for it, though.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

My only gripe (and it's been echoed by passengers before me): The sightlines here are truncated by the vessel's bow, so it doesn't offer the uninterrupted views you'd expect from an observation lounge.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

One of the other complaints passengers reported when Scenic Eclipse debuted was an ill-placed indoor pool found smack in the center of the ship's buffet. The line took note and removed the buffet pool, replacing it with an open seating area. (The move did leave the ship without a main pool, though passengers can take a dip in either of the two tiny plunge pools in the spa.)

Seeing what the venue looks like now, I can't imagine how cramped, humid and loud it must have been trying to eat with fellow passengers splashing away in the same enclosed space. Now, the area has much more seating and offers one of the most aesthetically pleasing buffet experiences I've ever had at sea, along with superb food.

Expedition guides and entertainment leaders

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Normally I shout out the crew on ships where service is stellar. On Scenic Eclipse, my butler, room steward and the guest services team were phenomenal, as one might expect on a cruise vessel of this caliber. However, here I want to focus on two groups of staff who truly set this cruise apart: the entertainment leaders and the expedition guides.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Cruise director Amy and her assistant, Pablo, led daily trivia, often with fun twists like musical clues that they sang themselves.

On a ship so tiny, there were trivia regulars, including the people in my group and me. On days when we missed the quizzes because they conflicted with excursions, they found time to read us the questions later in the day and provided additional brain teasers like word scrambles and rebus puzzles.

Additionally, the ship's expedition guides, who were friendly and exceedingly knowledgeable about all things flora, fauna, rocks and ice, were quick to answer questions and share their vast wealth of facts. Everyone I encountered was accommodating and insightful.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

They led us on daily Zodiac sailings, kayaking excursions and hikes, where they pointed out wildlife and remnants from previous visitors to the areas where we landed. They discussed flowers and the differences between local birds. They talked about why female polar bears are the ones to wear collars and how long they stay with their young. They also gave daily enrichment presentations, where they shared information about the history of Svalbard and quirky tidbits like how many McDonald's Big Macs an adult human would have to consume for enough energy to trek through the Arctic.

They were allowed to be more social with passengers than on more mainstream vessels, which created an extra layer of personalization. If invited, they were permitted to join us for dinner, which they did on several occasions. It was during mealtimes that we learned more about how they started their careers and what continues to draw them back on board.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

What might not be immediately apparent is that Scenic Eclipse offers an outsized number of dining options for a ship of this class. Each venue is small, but the menus are practically perfect in terms of selection. They're also delightfully fancy — but no egos get in the way of special requests or substitutions.

As a somewhat picky eater, I'm not a fan of certain types of meat and was worried I'd be hard-pressed to enjoy some of the restaurants on the ship. It turns out my fears were completely unfounded, and the culinary staff couldn't have been more gracious in accommodating my likes and dislikes.

At the reservation-only venues — including French restaurant Lumiere, Koko's Sushi and Night Market teppanyaki, as well as the chef's table (by invitation) — I was able to either find something I liked on the menu or request a vegetarian substitute. At Lumiere, I opted for a fabulous plant-based steak, and before dining at the chef's table, a quick call to the front desk meant my candied foie gras was replaced by an exquisite candied date instead.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

A vegetarian travel companion commented that she was impressed with the selection for people who don't eat meat at all, grateful that it extended beyond merely steamed vegetables and French fries.

My favorite food items from this trip were a Mediterranean tuna taco and falafel with beetroot and yogurt from the Night Market, which featured a new cuisine each night; a beef stick made to look like a cigar at the Chef's Table; and chicken tikka masala from the Yacht Club buffet.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Other standouts included Swedish pancakes with lingonberries from the room service breakfast menu; cookies, a hamburger, fruit pavlovas and Margherita pizza from the Azure Cafe; and truffle fries and daily risotto creations in Elements, the Italian restaurant.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't miss the out-of-this-world grape cotton candy from Koko's, which houses two Asian dining options, including a sushi venue that has all of its fish flown in from Japan.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

For travelers who like to cook their own meals, there's also a special kitchen where passengers can sign up to cook with the chef.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

As for drinks, remember to ask your expedition guide if you can grab a chunk of ice from a nearby glacier to take back on board after a Zodiac tour. The bar staff will rinse it and break it up for use in your favorite cocktails. (You can hear it snap, crackle and pop as it melts in your glass and releases air bubbles trapped inside.)

scenic eclipse yacht interior

In line with the rest of the ship, the cabins on Scenic Eclipse are ritzy but somewhat dark. Most of the time, that wasn't a problem for me, as it created a feeling of calm.

Everything is high-end, from the beds that adjust with remote controls and Illy coffee machines to the rainfall showerheads and Dyson hair dryers. (Finally, a ship hair dryer that actually worked — perhaps a little too forcefully, given how thoroughly it knotted my hair.)

All cabins are suites, offering far more space than what you'll find on most other ships — especially expedition vessels — and they're gloriously soundproof. I could barely hear any noise from the hall, and I couldn't hear any at all from above, below or next door.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

I'm not a big drinker, but with just about all onboard beverages included, it was nice to see a minifridge stocked with soda, beer and other libations. There was also a decanter set that could've been filled with my favorite liquors, had I asked for them. Carafes of water, replenished as they ran low, rounded out the choices.

My butler — yes, every cabin has one — also got into the habit of bringing me daily treats like bowls of potato chips or plates of cheese.

Other cabin flourishes include a surplus of outlets and USB ports for charging, as well as bathrobes, umbrellas and binoculars for use during the sailing.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

I had a large balcony, which was lovely, but I only used it a handful of times during my cold-weather cruise. It provided a terrific vantage point for photos on most days, and it allowed me to take some wonderful videos when we found ourselves in the middle of an ice field.

The balcony has an electronic blackout shade that lifts and lowers with the push of a button. It's immensely useful in polar regions, where you'll get 24 hours of light at times of the year.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Most standard bathrooms are shower-only, and the ship provides its own brand of Espa toiletries: two-in-one hair and body wash, conditioner and lotion. I appreciated the nightlight at the base of the sink, too. (I never did figure out how to turn it off, though.)

What still needs work

scenic eclipse yacht interior

While we're on the subject of cabins, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out some elements that don't work as well.

The first is the bathroom sink. The entirety of the top is a slope down which the water flows to a trough at the bottom. There is absolutely no counter space, which is particularly frustrating for anyone trying to do their hair or put on makeup, or for men who like to shave by filling up the sink basin.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Oddly, the cube-shaped pewter handle on the shower makes it difficult to open said door, as it provides no grip and hurts if you hold it a certain way. To get in the shower, I had to grab the top of the door and pull to get it open.

And then there is the television. Its placement in front of the couch isn't ideal because it catches a glare from the overhead lights and the balcony (especially when the midnight sun shines during summer in the Arctic). It's also cleverly hidden inside of a floor-to-ceiling glass mirror, which means it can't be angled to allow for in-bed viewing. The ship's first passengers complained bitterly about this, but the line has yet to correct the problem.

Shoreside operations

scenic eclipse yacht interior

I can't overstate how amazing the staff was on my cruise. They were friendly, knowledgeable and anticipated our every need. Shoreside operations still need quite a bit of work, though. The most critical issue Scenic needs to address right now is its off-ship logistics and communications.

For example, all fares for Scenic's expedition voyages include a pre-cruise hotel stay. The accommodations arranged by the line were fine for me. However, passengers expecting luxury (and with fares starting at $13,000 per person for a 10-day sailing, who wouldn't?) were disappointed.

Check-in took a very long time, the rooms were fairly basic (at least I got one that wasn't already occupied, unlike some travelers) and the embarkation-day breakfast was a brown bag with an apple and yogurt.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Again, just about everything involving the onboard experience was top-notch, so the irritation among passengers quieted until the disembarkation briefing, which was held on the second-to-last night of the cruise.

A future-cruise consultant who was running the presentation told everyone the charter flight from Svalbard back to Olso, originally scheduled to depart around midday, had been changed to 7 p.m.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Passengers demanded to know why they weren't informed sooner, given that many of them had dinner reservations in Oslo that evening or, worse, connecting flights home that they would miss due to the new later departure time.

Scenic knew about the change just a couple of days into the voyage (the public relations team that organized the press trip I was on told me as soon as they found out), so it was unclear why other passengers weren't immediately informed. Also, the fact that the line scheduled two tours in Svalbard to help cruisers pass the time until the later flight only seemed to anger them more.

"I don't want to spend six hours at some stupid museum that only takes me an hour to see," said one woman.

Several people from the U.S. and U.K. then raised their hands to complain that they emailed customer service with various questions prior to sailing but received no response.

Another said he got two confirmation emails for a helicopter booking, despite the fact that the ship's helicopters are not allowed to be used in the Arctic. (That was also not clearly communicated to passengers before embarkation, leading to much disappointment.)

scenic eclipse yacht interior

As more passengers weighed in, a trend became clear: The onboard team has its act together; shoreside operations does not.

On the last day, the shipboard staff rallied to allow us to stay on board until it was time to leave for the airport, stretching their resources thin as they prepared breakfast and lunch for us and turned over all the cabins for the next group of cruisers embarking later that day.

However, the folks handling land-based logistics dropped the ball again when a member of our travel party, who requested wheelchair assistance in advance, had no chair and no attendant waiting for him when we landed in Oslo.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

A few days after arriving home, my fellow passengers and I received an email from the line's founder and executive chairman, Glen Moroney, offering an apology for the scattered nature of the pre- and post-cruise experiences and explaining why certain aspects of the trip had gone awry.

He blamed a recent hacking incident, which necessitated a full website rebuild, delaying communications between the line and passengers.

To solve the issues, the letter said the line has beefed up its cybersecurity, and is currently working to hire and train additional reservations staff. It wasn't done quickly enough to stave off problems on my sailing, but, hopefully, logistics and communication will improve going forward.

What's next

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Overall, Scenic Eclipse is a luxurious vessel run by helpful and knowledgeable staff who go above and beyond to make sure passengers have the best time possible. The line has listened to its passengers and made onboard improvements to areas like the buffet, but there are still some quirks to be worked out, particularly in the way of shoreside logistics.

Looking ahead, Scenic's next expedition ship will be Scenic Eclipse II, a sister vessel to Scenic Eclipse. Although the general layout will be similar, and the ship will still have two helicopters, the line plans to make tweaks to the ship's design. They include the addition of an outdoor pool and an upgraded submarine with an expanded capacity of eight passengers, plus a driver. Scenic Eclipse will also replace its submarine with a newer model.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

In terms of new activities, one of the expedition guides let it slip that the cruise line is considering offering added-fee heliskiing. The expedition ships would use their helicopters to take cruisers to the top of a mountain and allow them to ski back down. There has been no official word yet on when this might be available and whether passengers would need to bring their own gear.

Scenic Eclipse II floated out at a shipyard in Croatia in July and is due to make its debut in April of 2023. After Scenic Eclipse II, the line has ordered three additional ships.

REVIEW: What to expect aboard the six-star Scenic Eclipse

Latte gets a taste of next-level luxury on the world's first discovery yacht.

A number of years back Scenic introduced a new brand positioning, adopting the “nth degree”. Gone was the name Scenic Tours, replaced by Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, placing a greater emphasis on the Australian-owned company’s expanding cruise presence, beyond the rivers of Europe and into Southeast Asia. The “nth degree”, characterised by the degree icon (now used predominantly in Scenic’s branding) are centred around delivering the highest level in product, service, inclusion and value.

In Scenic’s words, “The Nth degree is all about perceiving our guests’ wishes, even before they know what they need themselves.”

The World’s First Discovery Yacht

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Enter Scenic Eclipse , Scenic’s first foray into ocean cruising. Ultra-luxury ocean cruising.

I think th e Moroney’s would openly admit they’ve faced more than their fair share of choppy seas to bring Scenic Eclipse from concept to fruition. It’s been a seven year voyage from when Scenic Group Founder and Chairman Glen Moroney first conceptualised a cruise ship that offered all the comforts of a private, ultra luxury yacht for predominantly the affluent grey nomad market. Having already established a fleet of luxury river ships, the open water beckoned. An ocean vessel designed for discovery and equipped with not only the finest onboard facilities and among the largest suites at sea, but with a collection of enviable onboard ‘toys’ that guests have likely had on the wish list for years. The nth degree.

In October, LATTE was invited aboard the “World’s First Discovery Yacht” on an itinerary through the Caribbean. Joining a group of Australian and New Zealand travel advisors, we test-drove the six-star ship over a week long itinerary. We board Scenic Eclipse a few days into its scheduled 12-day “Taste of the Caribbean” itinerary in Port Antonio in Jamaica.

Port Antonio, Jamaica &copy Guy Dundas

Our shortened cruise visits Montego Bay, Guanaja Island in Honduras, Belize City and Half Moon Caye in Belize, Cozumel in Mexico, intersected by two full days at sea, before culminating in Miami, Florida. As LATTE exclusively revealed in July, it’s an itinerary Scenic needed to whip up after the Trump Administration threw a spanner in the works, blacklisting Americans from travelling to Cuba in June. Scenic chose to reroute its expedition to the island country as the bulk of passengers were American. That being the case, Scenic Eclipse is lucky to be half-filled of to its 228-passenger capacity.

Public spaces

Stepping onto the luxury yacht on Deck 4, the first thing guests will likely notice is that there’s no opulent atrium with a grand staircase. Instead we are directed to the Scenic Lounge: t he hub and primary gathering point where guests mingle. F lanked by reception at one end and an eye-catching marble bar at the other.

Scenic Lounge

scenic eclipse yacht interior

With an ice-like backdrop, the mirrored shelving supports a collection of whiskeys (110 at last count, and growing) from around the globe. Glen Moroney boasts that the bar is one of the few features on the ship he designed. Wife, Karen, was the lead on all other interior decor and design elements. Karen is onboard measuring up an art installation in the ship’s main restaurant, Elements, while I’m onboard . Two months into service and on her first voyage of the Caribbean, Scenic Eclipse is continuing to have finishing touches applied and spaces refined. Another example is two sofas appear outside dining venues that weren’t there a few days before.

A Theatre stems off the Scenic Lounge and during our cruise it’s the venue for briefings by the Discovery Team on the day ahead, karaoke and dancing, and movie screenings.

A Boutique offers a range of clothing, including Scenic branded apparel, jewellery, watches, handbags, luggage, sunglasses and more. The store also has some cleverly hidden essentials that aren’t out on display, such as bathroom essentials, reef-safe suncreams, sea-bands, medicines, memory cards, etc.

Like the expanding whiskey selection in the Scenic Bar, the reading material in the Observation Lounge & Library continues to grow, and right about now I suspect the collection of books on Antarctica will be popular as Scenic Eclipse makes her inaugural sailing to the White Continent this week.

There’s seating for around 40 guests here on a mix of armchairs, lounges, stools and table & chairs. Most seats face outwards overlooking the teak deck. An elegant maroon coloured Swarovski telescope takes pride-of-place peering towards the horizon.

Observation Lounge & Library and Observation Deck

scenic eclipse yacht interior

If you miss out on a seat, the lounge provides the only entry point to the large Observation Terrace over the bow. (As a side note, the sheer size of the deck does make it somewhat difficult to observe what’s ahead of the ship from the lounge.) The steep pitch of the ship’s hull does however makes it awkward to lean against the edge to observe the water and any marine or aquatic life below. However, as an all-suite balcony ship, guests can peer over the edge to their heart’s content from the confines of their own private space.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

The Sun Terrace on Deck 10 has two heated whirlpools on the port and starboard sides, separated by sun lounges and other seating arrangements. While not offered on my cruise, I’m told guests will soon be able to order drinks and snacks from bar-staff delivered to them as they relax.

Scenic Eclips e’s primary pool is bizarrely located within the Yacht Club on Deck 7, home to the daily breakfast and lunch buffet. Above the pool are louvers, converting the indoor space into an outdoor-like experience. More a plunge pool than a true swimming pool, a strange seating arrangement sees sun lounges positioned alongside dining tables. Remembering this is a casual eating space, even more odd are indoor glass showers on each side of the ship to rinse off. It’s not surprising, I don’t see a single passenger using this pool, or showers, on our voyage. Though, once in arctic waters this facility is likely to be put to better use.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Outside the Yacht Club and at the stern is a Vitality Pool, which is essentially an arced plunge pool.

Immediately beneath the Vitality Pool on Deck 6 is the stupendous Senses Spa. Separate male and female spaces are located on either side of the ship, each featuring a Nordic inspired sauna, steam room, temperature controlled plunge pool, infrared room, relaxation lounge with stunning mosaic embedded tiles and its own outdoor vitality pool, also at the stern.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

Spa Suite #806 is my decedent floating palace for a week. At up to 50-square-metres in size, the living space is sectioned into three compartments, separated by sheer curtains. An enormous walk-in has plenty of hanging space, bench-tops, draws, a safe and handy slide-out shoe shelf. I struggle to fill a third of the space available. A floor-to-ceiling mirror divides the walk-in from the king-sized bed.

Both sides of the Scenic Slumber Bed are individually adjustable in a multitude of settings and firmnesses, and the mattress can be flipped for even more comfort settings. There’s an accompanying pillow menu, and combined with the ultra plush duvet and sheet-set, ensuring a deep sleep on the sea, and living up to the branded name. The base of the bed also has a handy storage compartment for large suitcase.

A sheer curtain that can be easily pulled back separates the bed from the lounge room.  On the wall behind a corner lounge is a magnificent original artwork by Byron Bay artist, Mitch Gobel, that reflects the colours and movement of the ocean outside. There’s also a comfy armchair in the corner. In a simple twist, the large round coffee table cleverly adjusts to a suitable working station (from where I’m able to produce two issues of LATTE !). A huge rotatable Samsung TV stands on a pedestal and provides a direct feed to The Theatre and a catalogue of TV networks from around the world and endless movie selection.

My huge balcony has a chaise, arm-chair and side-table. In hindsight I don’t fully utilise this space as much as I could have, and that’s probably due to the humidity in the Caribbean where I’m cruising. I can imagine guests will be perched in this space, perhaps with new friends, ordering champagne and canapes from their butler as they observe penguins frolicking on ice flows in the Arctics.

scenic eclipse yacht interior

The living space also features a mini-bar complete with a retro-style i perEspresso coffee machine and mini-bar fridge with soft drinks and juices. But there’s no pre-stocked alcohol. The idea being for guests to head to one of the bars onboard and socialise over beverages.

My expansive marble bathroom is however the drawcard of the Spa Suite. The steam shower is equipped with an oversized head and “light therapy” which slowly transitions between all the colours of the rainbow. A bench seat stretches the width of the shower. It’ll be a handy feature for mature travellers but the drawback is that it pools water, which if not wiped down, drips during the night. There’s a stylish stretched double vanity and plenty of additional shelving space separating it from the pièce de résistance – the double size Philippe Starck bath. The whirlpool bath faces the balcony window and is a sanctuary unto itself to route out the day.

The bathroom and living space are separated by a glass divider which doesn’t quite reach the roof. Using a “electro-chromic” technology, the glass frosts for privacy at the flick of a switch.

A toilet is located in a standalone room next door to the bathroom, and I’m not the only one in the famil who finds the full-length mirror mounted to the back of the door a little peculiar.

Scenic Eclipse has an  all-suite balcony design. Each of the 114 suites are located in the front half of the upper five decks of the 10-level yacht. There are 12 Spa Suites on the ship, which are positioned on Decks 8 and 9. If your clients are after something even more extravagant and spacious, try the Panorama Suite (110-square-metres), Grand Panorama Suite (105-square-metres), Owner’s Penthouse Suite (195-square-metres) or the Two-bedroom Penthouse Suite (a whopping 245-square-metres).

The culinary experience

German TV Top Chef runner-up Tom Goetter leads the yacht’s culinary scene. Moroney tasked the 31 year old to create innovative dishes and menus, equipping the gastronomic genius with some of the best gear in the game, the latest innovation being an Urban Cultivator: a self-contained incubator that grows herbs and greens onboard the ship wherever she travels.

Goetter is a passionate and exuberant chef who served his time in a range of high-brow restaurants on the land, perfecting his craft, before finding his home on the sea working with Tui Cruises, before downsizing to Seabourn, and now Scenic Eclipse .

The yacht has five restaurants: Elements, Koko’s, Lumière , Azure Bar & Grill and the Yacht Club. Koko’s however is a three-in-one offering, with an Asian Fusion experience at its core and a sushi bar (Sushi & Koko’s) positioned upon entering the restaurant; and a Teppanyaki grill located in a private room towards the rear. Likewise, Element’s has an easily missed Chef’s Table private dining room. A cooking school, Scenic Epicure, is also classed as on the Scenic Eclipse’s dining experiences, so to is room-service.

Elements (on Deck 4) is the main and largest restaurant on Scenic Eclipse and offers Italian, steak and seafood. While I’m onboard, Karen Moroney is installing a new art gallery, with a collection of around a dozen pieces (more information on this exhibit is yet to be released). The Lasagna Bolognese with black Angus and organic tomatoes is delicious.

Next door to Elements is Koko’s where chef Goetter has his own take on the Japanese bento box at lunch. For dinner I join five members of the group and we are provided share a medley of the main courses, Cantonese Steamed Fish, Chingri Malay Curry, Angus Beef Pad Thai and Pekin Duck – all amazingly presented and tasty. Another night we experience the Teppanyaki Grill, but it’s a civilised affair, with no food throwing.

Upstairs on Deck 5 at the sophisticated fine-dining contemporary French venue, Lumière , guests pick their way through an eight-course menu, which includes ‘Rockerfeller’ oysters (comte bechamel, sauteed spinach, brioche and persillade brioche crumble) and Chateaubriant D’ Angus Noir, Foir Gras et Gratin (350 days grass fed Black Angus on potatoe gratin).

Casual dining options are available at the Yacht Club and Azure Bar & Cafe. And if you don’t care to leave the confines of your suite, In-Suite Dining is offered 24 hours a day. The succulent medium rare Australian lamb cutlets are a winner.

Tucked away is a private dining space where VIPs are invited to dine is the Chef’s Table. Here Goetter’s imagination runs wild, with dishes reminiscent of what you would expect from Heston Blumenthal, such as cigar-shaped burritos resting on dehydrated vegetables that resemble “ash”. Goetter also shares secrets of his craft in the culinary school, Epicure.

Scenic announced the launch of the vessel in January 2016 and awarded the construction contract to the Uljanik Group based in Croatia. The vessel’s delivery was, however, delayed due to financial challenges faced by the Uljanik Group. In February 2019, DIV Group and Fincantieri came to the rescue of Uljanik Group by purchasing an interest in the company and, subsequently, led the construction of Scenic Eclipse.

The yacht was finally delivered in  August 2019, followed by a christening ceremony in September 2019. The shipbuilding contract also includes an option for a second ship to be delivered in 2020.

Scenic Eclipse ship embarked on her maiden voyage from Reykjavík to Quebec in August 2019, followed by discovery voyages to the Americas, Antarctica, Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords.

This High-end Expedition Ship Has 2 Helicopters, a Submersible, and Butler Service

Here’s what it’s like to travel around the Mediterranean aboard Scenic Eclipse II, the newest high-end ship from the Australian cruise line Scenic.

The Staterooms

Bars and restaurants, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment, family-friendly offerings, accessibility.

The first thing I noticed about the Scenic Eclipse II is just how sleek the dark-hulled ship looked. Think mega yacht. No, think giga-yacht. At 551 feet, this is no small ship — even if, in the world of cruise lines, the Scenic Eclipse II rates as a rather intimate vessel, with a capacity of just 228 passengers.

Operated by the Australian brand that carved out a niche with luxury expedition vessels, this “discovery yacht” cuts the same gorgeous silhouette as its sibling, Scenic Eclipse , which debuted in 2019. Both ships also have all the hardware needed to operate in the polar regions, with an expedition crew to pull off adventures in places such as Antarctica.

But Scenic Eclipse II also represents an evolution: It has been tweaked with an eye to warm-weather destinations, such as the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Added on Deck 10 were plunge pools, sun loungers, and an indoor-outdoor Sky Bar. These features, the thinking goes, will be more in demand when the ship is in places like Southern Europe, say, where there’s less hard-core adventure and a more immersive shore-side experience.

To give it a try, I joined the Scenic Eclipse II for its christening journey in June 2023, traveling from Barcelona to Málaga, Spain, with stops along the way in the Balearic Islands. I was eager to compare the experience on this ship, in the bustling ports of Southern Europe, with the feel of the original, on which I had previously traveled to Antarctica.

The experiences were, as it turns out, starkly different. Unlike in the polar regions, where guests spend the lion’s share of their time on the ship, the Europe cruise took me to fascinating places on land: I spent most of my voyage on various city tours, visiting impressive sites like the prehistoric Talayotic villages in Menorca and the Botánico Biotecnológico, a high-tech botanical garden, in Ibiza.

One of the highlights of my particular sailing was the opportunity to chat with NASA astronaut Kathryn Sullivan, who was on board in her capacity as the ship’s godmother. She regaled us — passengers and crew — with tales of her career in space, her voyages on expedition cruises, and her descent into the Challenger Deep , the Pacific Ocean spot that’s more than 35,000 feet below sea level.

"There is one common thread of DNA that combines all these experiences: exploration and learning. That's has always been what motivates me," Sullivan said. "It's just the intense and pervasive curiosity about different places, about this planet. Who lives there? What critters live there? What's the landscape like?"

Truth be told, that same sense of adventure is what’s motivated me to hop aboard many expedition ships over the years. While this particular voyage through Spain lacked the feel of, say, an icebergs-and-penguins odyssey through Antarctica, I did appreciate being aboard a smaller ship during peak season in Europe. It was also a pleasure to return to the excellent restaurants on board — not to mention my spacious cabin — after a long day of touring on shore.

Here’s a closer look about what to expect when traveling on Scenic Eclipse II and my review of its staterooms, amenities, and more.

Scenic Eclipse II

  • With just 228 passengers — and a maximum of 200 in polar regions — Scenic Eclipse II offers an intimate experience.
  • Despite being small, the ship has 10 dining options, including high-end fine dining and casual spots.
  • All cabins have balconies and come with the services of a butler.
  • The ship has two helicopters and a submersible for heart-pumping adventures when conditions are right.

There are 114 balcony suites, and even entry-level options are attended by butlers. Even the smallest of the bunch, Verandah Suites, feel spacious, starting at 344 square feet. I particularly loved how roomy the bathroom felt — and how snazzy the black-and-white marble looked. All suites have king-size beds (that can be split into two twins) and high-end amenities including Dyson hair dryers.

Other cabin categories include Spa Suites (starting at 495 square feet), Panorama Suites (starting at 1,130 square feet), and Owner's Penthouse Suites (an astonishing 2,099 square feet). Spa Suites have the addition of a Philippe Starck–designed tub; the two Owner's Penthouse Suites on board have outdoor spa tubs on their sprawling terraces.

Scenic Eclipse II has an incredible array of delightful dining experiences — 10 in all. My favorites included the sushi bar, French restaurant Lumière, the adjacent Champagne bar, and Night Market @ Koko's, a venue with a rotating menu of regional cuisines, from the Middle East to India. I also loved the casual Azure Café, which serves lighter bites for breakfast and lunch, plus pizzas and pastas for dinner. Room service — which is available 24 hours a day — was also impressive. Finally, it's worth mentioning the gorgeous Scenic Lounge Bar, behind which is an illuminated display of rare whiskies, all available at no extra charge.

Where Scenic Eclipse II Sails

Where doesn't this ship sail? With Polar Class 6 rating, Scenic Eclipse II is capable of traveling to the Arctic and Antarctica but also spends time in warm-weather spots including the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia, depending on the season. The ship also travels to familiar cruise destinations, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Because of the ship’s relatively small size, it can visit some ports that mega-ships aren’t able to.

On my sailing, included shore excursions were fairly typical: Guests had their choice of city walking tours, along with visits to major attractions, like historic sites and cultural centers. In some destinations, we had the option to tackle more adventurous excursions, such as snorkeling.

When the ship is in "discovery mode," on expedition in more remote locations, such as the Arctic and Antarctica, excursions are more dynamic — think boarding Zodiacs to make “wet landings” on shore or for scenic trips around icebergs. In many destinations, Scenic Eclipse II offers helicopter and submersible excursions for an additional fee, depending on local regulations and the weather. .

The most notable amenity on Scenic Eclipse II is the spa, which spans nearly 6,000 square feet and includes a thermal suite. I also spent plenty of enjoyable time on the sun deck, where there’s a plunge pool and the indoor-outdoor Sky Bar. As far as entertainment goes, you won’t find the over-the-top productions that you might see on mega-ships, but that’s part of being on an intimate expedition-style vessel. There is a small theater, though, and I enjoyed the evening shows put on by the talented singers aboard.

Children aged 12 and up are welcome, but my sense was that this isn't a particularly kid-friendly ship: There’s no kid’s club nor is there any sort of programming aimed specifically at tweens or teens. The right kind of kids might like these trips, but they’ll need to be willing to be, potentially, the only youngsters aboard.

There are no wheelchair-accessible cabins on Scenic Eclipse II , which does have elevator service between all decks. Scenic advises travelers to contact the company before booking to discuss any specific accessibility concerns. Worth a mention was one moment during my trip, when several other guests and I were transported by bus from our pre-embarkation hotel to the port: We were dropped off nowhere near the ship, and there were no Scenic staff on hand to guide us to the terminal's entrance. A few dozen of us, including some people with limited mobility, found it to be a fairly difficult experience.

I'm a butler on a luxury cruise where tickets cost up to $150K. I've traveled to Antarctica and enjoyed perks like submarine rides — here's what my job is like.

  • Nenad Popovic is a butler on a six-star, 200-passenger luxury cruise called the Scenic Eclipse.
  •  The ship travels to far-flung places like the Arctic and Antarctica and has its own submarine.
  • Popovic works for four months at a time on board the ship and then takes a two-month holiday.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nenad Popovic, the cruise butler for the Scenic Eclipse. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I was working as a waiter in a café in my hometown in Serbia when I bumped into one of my school friends who was a stewardess on an ocean liner.

After listening to her adventures, I was hooked. I began to consider life on the water. Since then, I've traveled to the Arctic and Antarctica, among other destinations, as a cruise butler.

I started as a steward on fairy-tale river cruises across Europe

In September 2014, I applied to Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours to be a restaurant steward on its river cruises. I was accepted in October.

Before I could join the boat the following March, I had to pass the maritime industry's SCTW training course — a five-day intensive in first aid, firefighting, and safety training. The company covered my course fees, and once I'd passed, I was ready to join the ship.

In March 2015, I started stewarding the river cruises for Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours. Each morning at work, I could wake up in a different city or country.

On the river boats, we could travel all the way from Amsterdam to Budapest for over two weeks. The river-cruise routes passed villages and castles in rural Europe that looked straight out of a fairy tale.

Moving from steward to butler gave me more opportunities

After two years as a steward, I was promoted to cruise butler. As a steward, I was trained in silver service. But working as a butler, I had to stay one step ahead of the guests' needs and go above and beyond to create a wonderful experience.

To become a cruise butler, you need experience working for a luxury hotel or boat. I was trained by other butlers on the river cruises and soaked up everything they taught me.

Related stories

In May 2021, I swapped the rivers of Europe for the open ocean and became a cruise butler on the Scenic Eclipse.

Now I work on a six-star luxury Discovery yacht

The Scenic Eclipse is a six-star Discovery yacht that sails to the Arctic and Antarctica, among other destinations. A single ticket can cost as much as $150,000 for a 30-day Arctic voyage but prices start at around $30,000 per person.

The river boats I'd worked on were luxurious, but I was blown away stepping on board the Scenic Eclipse.

There are five restaurants on board including a French fine-dining restaurant with a Champagne bar. There are also two helicopter pads, a private submarine, and a helicopter for guests.

Every guest has a butler. There are eight butlers and a head butler on board. I oversee up to 10 suites and look after 20 people per cruise.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scenic Eclipse (@scenic.eclipse)

I spend four months on board, then I have a two-month holiday.

Every guest has a butler assigned to them with 24/7 service

On the Scenic Eclipse, the butler service is 24/7. We work in shifts, so when I finish at 9 p.m., another butler will start the night shift. I work between eight to 10 hours with a break at midday.

My alarm rings around 5:30 a.m. After a coffee in the crew mess, I deliver room-service breakfast to the suites who've ordered it.

While my guests leave the ship for excursions, I refill their mini bar and collect their laundry. I organize restaurant bookings for them on board or arrange helicopter or submarine trips. I also ensure their suite is flawless and make sure fresh fruit or a specific cocktail is waiting for them.

In the evening, I offer a turndown service. I turn the lights down, make sure their itinerary for the following day is on the TV screen and leave treats.

For anniversaries or birthdays, I'll leave flowers. I love overhearing guests' reactions when they discover their gifts.

During my afternoon break, I'll leave the ship with crew friends to enjoy the local food or visit a heritage area. If we're docked overnight, I will go out for dinner or a walk in the evening. At sea, I hang out with colleagues in the crew mess.

Over the past 2 years, I've traveled from the Mediterranean island of Madeira to the wilds of Antarctica

My best day on the ship was my first trip to Antarctica. While cruising between the icebergs, two whales breached the side of the boat. It was magical.

I've flown in the Scenic Eclipse's helicopter over Antarctica, which was unforgettable. Looking over the raw landscape was amazing.

I was also invited to join one of the dives in the Arctic in the ship's submarine. As we submerged beneath the waves, the lights on the submarine's side shone across a shoal of tiny transparent fish, creating a rainbow-like effect. It was surreal.

The cruise is all-inclusive, so I don't expect any tips, but we do get them. However, my real reward is feedback from guests who say I've helped create a memory of a lifetime — that's my favorite part of the job.
