Our founders began to research alternative energy sources to power yachts during the mid 1990s. Today, the technology of our in-house developed solar-electric drivetrain has been perfected and is multiple generations ahead in terms of reliability, performance and efficiency.

Historical Track-Record

In 2009, the Solarwave 46 was launched as our first prototype of a fully solar-electric, self-sufficient ocean-going catamaran. Since then, our electric yachts have cruised many 10.000s of nautical miles, performing flawlessly during a variety of weather conditions.

Enabling Self-Sufficiency

What differentiates a Silent is the unprecedented level of autonomy provided by our yachts. Being able to produce your own energy enables a fully self-sufficient lifestyle on board. Travel the oceans sustainably while making them your infinite playground.

What Makes Us Unique

The tranquility on board of our yachts is unique. A lack of noise, fumes and vibrations create a deep connection with the sea. Luxury and sustainability finally merged into a holistic experience, working hand in hand with nature by minimizing the impact on the marine environment without compromising comfort.

For optimal performance and efficiency, our solar-electric drivetrain integrates seamlessly with all onboard systems. Compared to fossil fuelled powertrains of motoryachts, electric powertrains have very few moving parts, resulting in minimal maintenance, maximum reliability and significantly lower running costs.

The ability to recharge your own batteries with the sun marks a new era of freedom. Depending on cruising speeds and weather conditions, a Silent has virtually unlimited range, enabling you to live a fully self-sufficient lifestyle on board. Unbound by the limitations of fossil fuels, you are free to explore the horizons.

The technology powering our yachts today has been pioneered by our founders almost three decades ago. Continuous upgrading and steady optimization of the entire system are some of the key reasons our in-house developed solar-electric drivetrain offers a comprehensive portfolio of assurances and warranties.

Why Silent Yachts

A sensible approach to yachting which works in self-sufficient harmony with nature and creates a completely new experience on board.

If you have any questions about the SILENT 80 information page below please contact us .

The SILENT 80 luxury catamaran is a solar-powered model constructed by Austrian shipyard Silent-Yachts offering an LOA of 24m/79ft. The naval architecture is the work of Enrique Castilla from Insenaval while Marco Casali from Too Design created the interior and exterior styling. The flexible accommodation layout can provide for 8-12 guests over 4-6 cabins respectively, with a crew of four to provide stellar service throughout the cruise. The yacht's launch date is in 2020.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF SILENT 80: ~Solar-powered vessel ~Flybridge Jacuzzi ~Abundance of outdoor living space ~Large and airy cabins ~Excellent stability ~Shallow draft for close beach access ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi

Each hull has a swim platform leading from the water to the main deck aft, and a hydraulic swim platform allows for the easy launch and retrieval of tenders.

The main deck aft cockpit is shaded by the flybridge overhang and contains a stern sofa and elevated dining table along with a port side wet bar and a starboard alfresco dining table and sunbed/sofa. Walkways to each side lead to the foredeck, and a sofa placed amidships allows guests to take in the views in privacy. The foredeck has a C-shaped sofa wrapping around two drinks tables where guests can take in uninterrupted forward views. A sunpad is placed either side of the seating, and the spacious bow can be furnished with sun loungers or left clear for a social event.

The flybridge is accessed via a port stairway and there is a C-shaped alfresco dining area to starboard and a helm station and sofa placed centre. A Jacuzzi is placed aft and centre, with the area directly behind left clear for sunbathing.

The hardtop is covered in solar panels and when the flybridge is not in use, it can be moved down to lie flush with the rest of the solar panels to avoid casting shadows.

The hulls host the guest and crew accommodation, leaving the central section for a shared social space.

The salon is comprised of an aft lounge, a formal dining area and a galley, with a wet bar nearby for drinks to suit the occasion. Full-height glazing tapers into smaller windows farther forward, creating naturally illuminated environments for any social occasion.

As a solar-powered vessel, there is no need for an engine room and the space is instead used to store tenders and water toys.

SILENT 80 Specifications

The SILENT 80 motor yacht comes in a standard 50kW cruiser version and a more powerful 250kW E-power version, the latter option capable of a top speed of 20 knots and silent cruising at 7-8 knots with a range of around 100 nautical miles per day.

Yacht Accommodation

The SILENT 80 luxury catamaran model offers a flexible accommodation layout and is able to sleep between 8 guests across 4 cabins or 12 guests over 6 cabins. The Master suite has a private office and in all arrangements, there is at least one VIP stateroom. The crew of four will ensure that every guest is well taken care of throughout the cruise.

The Burgess charter experience

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Tunisia, the target of Moscow's growing attentions

Russian aircraft landings on the island of Djerba are just one sign of Russia's multi-faceted entry strategy on Tunisian territory.

Tunisian president Kais Saied (right) and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Tunis, December 21, 2023.

Has Djerba airport, a tourist haven in southeast Tunisia, recently been the scene of unusual Russian air movements? The question provoked a certain degree of nervousness among observers of regional strategic balances following the publication, on Sunday, May 19, of an article in the Italian daily La Repubblica reporting that "Russian military" aircraft had landed on the island located 130 kilometers from the Libyan border, "in recent days."

While Tunisian authorities remained silent on the subject, Moscow issued a statement on Monday from its embassy in Libya – not in Tunisia – dismissing La Repubblica's reports as "lies" and "falsifications." Tunisia has traditionally been tied to the Western camp – its army has close ties to the United States – and a possible pro-Russian evolution in the country would certainly mark a break, albeit a very theoretical one at this stage. The autocratic drift of President Kais Saied, a regular scorner of Western "diktats," has nonetheless created a "porosity" and "permeability" to the prevailing rhetoric in Moscow, in the words of a European observer in Tunis.

"There have indeed been landings [of Russian aircraft in Djerba], but we don't know their nature," said a Western diplomatic source. According to unconfirmed reports circulating in security analyst circles in Tunis, these were civilian "cargo planes" and "charters," not the military aircraft mentioned by La Repubblica . According to the same sources, some of these aircraft carried Russians affiliated to the former Wagner security company (renamed Africa Corps), who had come to relax on Djerba.

Other aircraft were said to have stopped off to refuel. These comings and goings of Russian aircraft on the Tunisian island have been reported for about a year. According to many analysts, they are not unrelated to the new deployment of Russian influence in the Sahel and Libya, even if the actual military dimension is still absent.

Maritime movements

This information, albeit fragmentary and imprecise, on air movements in Djerba testifies to Moscow's discreet involvement in Tunisia. It can also be linked to certain maritime movements, notably those of the Russian cargo ship Mekhanik Makarin – placed under US sanctions since the war in Ukraine – which anchored in the Tunisian port of Sousse at the end of March, on its way back to Murmansk after cruising off Benghazi (eastern Libya). According to maritime tracking sites, the vessel is now on its way back to the Mediterranean, with a scheduled stopover in Sfax around June 8.

Washed away: MSU scientist analyzes costs of flood management on the Miss. Sound

Contact: Meg Henderson

STARKVILLE, Miss.—A century ago, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was heralded as the “Seafood Capital of the World” by the U.S. Congress. However, beginning with Hurricane Katrina in 2005, natural and human-made disasters have wreaked havoc on the once thriving seafood industry. A new study by a Mississippi State scientist is quantifying the economic impacts of these disasters on coastal fisheries.

The Bonnet Carré Spillway diverts water at sunset during a high Mississippi River flood stage. (Submitted photo)

Ben Posadas, an agricultural economist in the university’s Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, is examining the economic impacts of the two 2019 Bonnet Carré Spillway openings on the coast in collaboration with the National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (nSPARC) housed at MSU. Posadas spent the last 30 years quantifying the impacts of fisheries on the coast and the significance of moving from the peak of seafood production to its present state.

“This baseline study is a first step to establish a framework that can collect and analyze data to gauge the extent of the 2019 Bonnet Carré disaster over time and estimate the impacts of future openings,” said Posadas, who also is an Extension and research professor stationed at the MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi.

The 7,600-acre spillway—12 miles west of New Orleans, Louisiana—was completed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1931 in response to the devastating Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Up to 7,000 wooden “needles” resting in 350 bays can open to release excess freshwater from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain. From there, it passes through a strait called the Rigolets and empties into the Mississippi Sound. The spillway was opened nine times over its first seven decades and six more times since 2008, including twice in 2019.

The two openings of the BCS in 2019—a total of 122 days—left the once-thriving Mississippi Sound nearly silent. The seafood industry ground to a near halt, with oyster mortality over 90% on all but one Mississippi harvest reef and brown shrimp harvests down 82% compared to the prior five-year average. Blue crab commercial landings fared better but were still down 30% compared to the previous five years.

Shrimp and oyster landings—which are more vulnerable to ecological disasters than other commercial species—both peaked in the late ’90s and early 2000s. In 2004, about 4 million pounds of Mississippi oysters were harvested, and in the years after Katrina, restoration efforts revived the market which yielded 2 million pounds harvested and more than $23 million in total sales impacts in 2009 .

Between the 2010 Deepwater Horizon incident and freshwater infusions from the BCS roughly every other year, oyster landings steadily declined until the 2019 BCS opening shut down Mississippi’s oyster industry—which remains closed to this day. Shrimp have fared somewhat better, but they, too, have not fully recovered. The annual average harvest was nearly 14 million pounds and $26.2 million in sales between 1984-2004, which has shrunk to less than 8.5 million pounds and $14.9 million since 2005 .

In this project, Posadas will use a tool he developed—the Seafood Landings Assessment Model—to analyze Mississippi's annual commercial landings and values from 1950 to the present. However, this investigation will go much further than previous ones, like his major economic impact study of the 2011 BCS openings.

This time, Posadas also will explore the losses to Mississippi’s coastal industries that rely directly on a healthy seafood market: commercial fishing, charter boats, hotels and lodging, and tourism. He will examine and analyze income and employment-related data in these industries to provide a holistic economic scope of the 2019 BCS openings.

Commercial fisheries and aquaculture producers suffer the greatest loss during disasters. Paul Mickle, co-director of the Northern Gulf Institute at MSU and former Mississippi Department of Marine Resources chief scientific officer, said while disaster relief has historically been available to restore marine habitats and industries along the Mississippi Coast, those funds are drying up.

“Federal disaster relief funding is based on a 10-year average of the quantity and value of fish landings,” he said. “When the spillway is opened every other year, the average landings get lower and lower, and we’ve had zero wild oyster landings for the past six years. There’s no way to get disaster relief for our commercial sector under the current system.”

In addition to income and employment data, Posadas and nSPARC will analyze the impact of BCS openings on local and state tax revenue and Mississippi’s “blue economy,” which reaches beyond its coastal counties, impacting the entire state. NSPARC will conduct a survey to assess consumer perception of the state’s seafood-dependent industries and the well-being of workers in these sectors.

“Mississippi’s ‘blue economy’ of ocean-focused industries in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties is a major economic engine,” he said. “The Sound’s health is inextricably linked to the health of the coastal economy and culture, the well-being of residents, and the perception of the Gulf Coast as a tourist destination.”
