Burgess closes the year surpassing the usd 2.5 billion mark
Burgess, the full-service superyacht agency for yachts over 30m, closes the year hitting the 2.5 billion dollar mark. Both the charter and sales contributed to this result.
‘ We have once again had a tremendous year across all departments. With brokerage securing well over USD2 billion in sales, charter around 50% up on pre pandemic levels and our New Build team 20% up on last year’s figures, I am delighted with the team’s unstoppable efforts’, confirms CEO Jonathan Beckett .
In charter, 860 trips were booked by the team meaning our clients collectively spent 1100 weeks or 7700 days on charter this year, Ben Harwood, Head of Charter owed the success to a pent-up demand left over from the pandemic. ‘Everyone just wants to get away and travel.
The peak weeks from mid-June to mid-August saw the Burgess fleet booked out meaning clients had to book very early to ensure that they got the choice of yachts for the weeks they wanted. That trend of booking ahead is continuing into 2023 – and even 2024.
Burgess Charter has already responded to this demand by signing more yachts to the fleet. ‘We have signed another 23 yachts so far this year,’ Harwood confirms.
Moreover, the 72m ALBATROSS joined the Burgess sales fleet the day before the Monaco Yacht Show, and sold a few days later making it one of the fastest deals on record resulting in the team closing four yachts in seven days in the final quarter: 5G, LIND, ALBATROSS plus one confidential deal in excess of EUR 100 Million.
‘Our service is unrivalled, and we simply get the job done, whether we are selling a 30m yacht or 100m – we deliver the same service to our clients. At the end of the day, we are in the relationship business, and this is where we shine,’ concludes Richard Lambert , Head of Sales.
Building on the success of Burgess Technical Services, 2022 also saw the introduction of the Burgess New Build Sales team – a merge of highly experienced sales brokers and naval architects resulting in a seamless experience for any clients wishing to build a new yacht. The Technical services team has reported a year-on-year increase of 20% with six yachts in build and several more under negotiation.
Sean Bianchi , Head of Burgess New Construction said ‘Across the industry the new build sector continues at a buoyant pace, shipyards continue to report very few build slots available for the next few years. Burgess Technical Services enjoyed another productive and busy year despite the ongoing global issues. The New Build Sales team also supported our clients throughout 2022 ensuring all aspects of a project were being considered and our client’s interests protected. The New Build Sales team continue to monitor the industry, production and build slot availability, they are first to know of any opportunities which we share directly with our clients.’

Burgess reports record superyacht sales
- January 12, 2022
The global brokerage house has announced a record-breaking year for sales of pre-owned superyachts.
Arete was among Burgess sales late last year
Burgess has reported a record year for pre-owned superyacht sales, with sales in 2021 topping €2 billion (about US$2.27 billion) according to the last-known asking prices, representing a 27 per cent increase on the company’s previous annual high.
Of the transactions, over half were yachts over 50m in length. In addition, Burgess’ new-build division enjoyed its best-ever results, up 39 per cent on 2020.
Burgess’ brokerage team including members of the Asia division
Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess, said: “In my 41 years at Burgess, I have never experienced a year quite like the one we have just seen.”
Burgess also said charter activity was high, with 2021 equalling its previous-best year in 2019. The British-owned company reported a two per cent increase in the number of yachts available for charter, compared to an average increase of five per cent in previous years.
Titania was Burgess’ best-performing charter yacht
Richard Lambert, Burgess’ Head of Sales, said: “More owners are deciding to keep their yachts private this year. This could be for a number of reasons, but Covid is arguably the biggest driving factor, with owners reserving their yachts for exclusive use for the family.”
Burgess, which has over 200 full-time staff in 15 offices around the world, is confident of another bumper year for charter in 2022, with bookings already up by 25 per cent for the summer.
Victorious is a new addition to the Burgess charter fleet
“Fasten your seatbelts, as we’re in for another exciting 12 months,” Beckett said. “There will be some bumps in the road, but if we work hard and concentrate, we all stand a great chance of success.”

Burgess secures over $2.5b in sales
Burgess has recorded over $2.5b in sales for 2022 and a charter increase of 50% from pre-pandemic levels. Its Technical Services team is also 20% up on last year’s figures.
The British owned superyacht agency said it sold the 72m (236ft) Delta Marine Albatross (pictured) a few days after the Monaco Yacht Show. Having only received the vessel the day before the event, it was one of the company’s “ fastest deals on record.” The sales team sold another three yachts in the same week, one of which was a confidential deal of more than €100m.
“We have once again had a tremendous year across all departments,” said company CEO, Jonathan Beckett. “I am delighted with the team’s unstoppable efforts.”
Beckett added that the company owes its sales record to the guidance from the senior members of the brokerage team.
The firm also reported over 860 charter bookings this year. Ben Harwood, head of Charter, said the numbers were due to pent-up demand left over from the pandemic.
“ Everyone just wants to get away and travel,” he said. “ Our US clients were ready to get back to the Mediterranean after many chose to charter closer to home in the Bahamas or the Caribbean for the last couple of years.”
The Burgess fleet was fully booked during the Med’s peak season from June to August. Clients had to book earlier to get their desired yachts – a trend that is continuing into 2023 and 2024. Burgess signed another 23 yachts to its fleet in 2022 to meet this rise in demand.
This year also saw the introduction of Burgess’ New Build Sales team, consisting of senior-level sales brokers and naval architects. This has led to the company’s Technical Services team reporting an increase of 20% and six yachts under construction.
Sean Bianchi, head of New Construction said: “Across the industry, the new build sector continues at a buoyant pace, shipyards continue to report very few build slots available for the next few years. Burgess Technical Services enjoyed another productive and busy year despite the ongoing global issues.”

Burgess: Celebrating 40 Years In The Superyacht Business
[dropcap]E[/dropcap]ntering its fifth decade in record-breaking style, Burgess celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. 2014 saw exceptional sales results with Burgess closing on three of the five largest yachts on the market and in total 42 yachts were sold over the year with a value in excess of Euros 1.2 billion. The fact that seven of these were new construction projects heralds very good news for the future of the superyacht industry as a whole.
Peter Brown, Sales Broker:
Yachts are selling, confidence is growing. We predict another good year of strong sales in 2015 with some highly desirable yachts on the market that are ready to go.
Burgess has always been ahead of the game: it pioneered offering superyacht clients a full suite of specialist services, having introduced its operational management division within a few years of establishing the company. The first yacht to join the company’s yacht management programme, an 86m (282ft) superyacht, is still looked after by Burgess 28 years later.
In the same year, Burgess launched its new construction division, now known as Burgess Technical Services (BTS), to offer owners, captains and other interested parties a range of project management services throughout the build process. Within four years, BTS had amassed 18 projects and has to date been involved with some of the world’s largest and most complex new build projects, including the first superyachts to comply with the third iteration of the Large Yacht Code. The BTS team were also responsible for developing and implementing the Passenger Yacht Code for commercial yachts designed to accommodate between 13 and 36 guests.
Tim Wiltshire, Group Sales Director:
The market may be stabilising and recovering, but we are not predicting any return to the pre 2008 inflated market conditions. The increase in yacht sales has only recently placed moderate upwards pressure on prices, but we can expect the most sought-after vessels – high quality, large superyachts, with good pedigree, well-maintained and proven on the water – to hold their values more robustly over the next 12 months as inventory levels fall, especially as the upper end of the market.
Burgess continues to evolve with the challenges and pressures of the evermore regulated superyacht industry, not least when it comes to technology. Last year the “Burgess Manage” digital management solution was launched. This allows the team to work more efficiently with the captains and crew on the managed fleet of over 70 superyachts. Automatic tracking of regulatory paperwork and crew qualifications enables yachts to operate more efficiently and effectively.
Jonathan Beckett, Chief Executive Officer:
Times change and I am immensely proud of the way Burgess has grown over the last 40 years from a single-handed venture to a global market leader with a multi-million Euro turnover. We are now 160 people in 11 offices worldwide and it is inspiring to see the next generation of brokers, technical experts, charter specialists and yacht managers taking Burgess forward. The superyacht industry remains forever fascinating, never predictable and always challenging. I am very much looking forward to the next chapter.
In addition to record sales in 2014, Burgess enjoyed a buoyant boat show season at Cannes, Monaco and Fort Lauderdale, exhibiting more than 10% of the vessels on display, with a total value of over US$1 billion. In Monaco alone, the total length of Burgess superyachts in Port Hercule and at anchor exceeded 1 kilometre. And 2015 is shaping up to be even more exciting, with new builds, and the sale of large, high quality yachts continuing to reflect the strengthening market. As Burgess celebrates its 40th anniversary in the business, the company is looking forward to an even better future as it continues to lead the way as the global superyacht authority.

Burgess moves from profit to loss
> Subscriber-only , By David Robinson 2021-01-06T16:34:00+00:00
Difficult market conditions caused 24% drop in turnover to £16.63 million for UK yacht brokerage firm
In its fiscal year to December 31, 2019, the financial performance of Nigel Burgess Ltd, the lead UK-registered company of the Burgess Yachts brand and a subsidiary of Nigel Burgess SAM, reports a 24% drop in turnover to £16.63 million and move from a profit after tax in 2018 of £1.77 million to a loss of £976,000.
The principal activies of the Burgess group are yacht brokerage, yacht charters, crew and operational management, and technical supervision of new yacht construction. Butgess also continues to have a branch in Palma, Mallorca.
In its annual return to Companies House, the UK’s business register, the company’s strategic report said, “Difficult market conditions across the industry has resulted in a decrease in turnover in 2019 and this has had an expected impact of profit before tax resulting in a loss. Capital expenditure and operating costs have continued to be tightly controlled.”
It added that: “The directors believe the group remains well-positioned to perform strongly in 2020 and 2021 across all departments.” In the context of Covid-19, they also stated confidence in being able to continue “without significant adverse operational or financial impact” although they acknowledged some potential impacts from the final terms of Brexit, which had not been finalised at the time of the filing. The statement was dated December 14, 2020.
The key financial figures are as follows:
A dividend of £1.023 million was made by Nigel Burgess Ltd to immediate parent company, Nigel Burgess SAM during 2019 which compared to a dividend payment of £1.52 million made to the latter in fiscal 2018.
During 2018 Jonathan Beckett, the chief executive of Nigel Burgess Ltd owned 63% of Nigel Burgess SAM but on April 23, 2019, this holding was increased to 71%.
In 2019 the average number of employees at Burgess was 104 compared with 107 in 2018. Total staff costs including wages and salaries; social security costs and other pension costs amounted to £9.56m compared with £10.95m in 2018.

Galactica Star - 2013
Opposite objectives
Galactica Star, a 65-metre Heesen is the world’s first aluminium yacht with a fast displacement hull. As a result, she has achieved what was considered impossible if you think along conventional lines. The yacht was designed to achieve opposite objectives. To go faster but use less fuel and to go further but also faster. It is not a riddle, it is not evolution, it is quite simply the result of over 50 million computer calculations and exhaustive testing that had such extraordinary results that the model was retested to confirm the facts. In a world where a 5 percent gain is considered a triumph, this hull is 30 percent more efficient than any other yet tested.
First impressions
Leave aside the technical and enjoy the lifestyle. Deck space is staggering with over 267 square metres on her three upper decks. The foredeck is both a helipad and sun terrace set over gull wing doors that open to reveal a full-beam tender garage large enough for the 7.5 metre Art of Kinetik speedboat.
Step aboard
Galactica Star has been laid out to enable guests to dine on any deck at any time of the day. With a choice of ten locations the crew can transform each place to suit the mood of the moment.
