PRESENTING M5
It took 7 years of planning to design and build sail yacht M5 (ex yacht Mirabella V). The near decade-long project is understandable when you consider the yacht is currently the largest sloop ever built. She is the largest ever in the Italian and France yacht charter marketplace. She is surprisingly fast for a sailboat of her size. The over 250-foot vessel is eco-friendly. Additionally, she provides all the comforts of a motor yacht without noise and fuel consumption. Vosper Thornycroft yacht M5 delivers this combination of performance and comfort.
An extensive refit of yacht M5 makes her even larger. In specific, than her original launch size of 75 meters. Improvements include a stern redesign and extension of 3 meters and replacement of the main engines and generators. Additionally, electrical system upgrades, mast and rigging overhaul, and a repainted hull. This magnificent charter yacht is bristol.
Impressive amenities include a spacious sky deck for lounging, with seating for 18 to 20 guests. What a perfect entertainment area for a starlit dinner, followed by a surround-sound widescreen film on the yacht’s outdoor cinema screen. The same number of guests can also comfortably gather around the freshwater spa on the foredeck. For intrepid guests, a mast lift can hoist up to three guests to the top of the nearly 300-foot tall mast. NO other yacht can offer this vista and overall superyacht experience to her onboard guests.
GUEST ACCOMMODATIONS
Accommodations include a full-beam master suite, along with 6 fully-appointed staterooms. All staterooms feature large bay windows, en-suite bathrooms, and complete audio/visual entertainment centers. Other indoor facilities worthy of note include the gymnasium and sauna.
DID YOU KNOW?
The mast on M5 is so tall (at 292 feet) that the yacht cannot pass safely under San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

M5 (ex Mirabella V) restyled by Pendennis Shipyard
M5 's stern was remodeled at the pendennis shipyard in falmouth, uk and completed her sail trials successful..
M5 was originally built in 2004 as Mirabella V . Until she is still the largest sloop with over 75 meters (length of the hull) and an almost 90 meters long mast.
Designed and manufactured by Carbo-Link with OYS making the fittings, the 34 new carbon fiber stays, and titanium fittings with built-in dynamic fiber optics have decreased the weight of the rig by 18 tons. The sail trials not only established the M5 ‘s potential speed but tested the new system and balance of the yacht under sail for the first time. During several hours on the water with challenging sea conditions, the remodeled boat performed well, reaching 17.7 knots in 18-23 knots of wind.
The project, due to be completed over the next month, has seen a collaboration between Pendennis and the original designer Ron Holland , to achieve the Owners idea of extending the stern by 3m which has created a new sleeker profile providing an impressive aft deck area. During the refit, Pendennis has completed extensive engineering works and the interiors have been redesigned by UK company Redman Whiteley Dixon .

Works on the major refit of the 75-metre superyacht M5 (ex Mirabella V) at the Pendennis facility in Falmouth are progressing as planned. The new developments to the world’s largest sloop rigged sailing yacht M5 are already taking shape.
Luxury yacht m5 (ex Mirabella V) before refit - aft shot @Alexis Andrews
As announced previously her visit will see the installation of a new 3m stern extension with naval architecture by megayacht m5 (ex Mirabella V)’s original designers Ron Holland Design . The new composite stern manufactured by Green Marine is now in place with the post-cure scheduled to commence shortly. In conjunction with this, a significant amount of new open deck area has been added aft of the communications arch on the top deck (known as the flybridge) which is also undergoing remodelling. Once completed, these new areas will add a significant amount of flexible social space to the exterior of m5.

Further structural changes also include the installation of a new side boarding platform, extending out from the port hull to water level. The splash mould has left Pendennis and is currently with the door manufacturer for construction. The aperture in the hull is scheduled be cut this month in preparation for the new door structure to be bonded in. The hull and superstructure of the 75m superyacht m5 will be undergoing a full repaint over the next few months by the Pendennis in-house paint team. Preparation work for this large scale operation has already started, with areas not undergoing structural modifications primed ready for the new paint system.

The flybridge furniture which was previously made from moulded composite has now been removed in preparation for a new flexible furnishing option to be fitted. In the main living areas, the Owner’s quarters and main saloon as well as lower deck guest suites have mostly been stripped out in preparation for new interiors designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon and manufactured by Pendennis in conjunction with SINZ ( SuperYacht Interiors, New Zealand ). Work on installing these will start during November.

The programme of engineering work running alongside this schedule is also substantial. Most equipment in the engine room and technical spaces has been removed, with large shipping holes created in the decks to hoist equipment from the depths of the M5 yacht. Pendennis is replacing all primary systems including new main engines, generators, shore power units, and switchboards. There is also an overhaul of all other systems with major rewiring currently taking place in preparation for this major upgrade.
As the project progresses over the next few months, luxury yacht m5 will be re-born, modernised and upgraded throughout, providing a truly impressive cruising experience for all that board her.
Refit of the 75m megayacht m5
Pendennis will be attending the upcoming Fort Lauderdale Boat Show . Its stand will be located in the Yacht Builder’s Tent, Stand 669, where a team from the company will be available to answer any questions about the 75m megayacht m5 (ex Mirabella V) or any other recent projects at Pendennis.

77m Sail Yacht M5 (ex. Mirabella V) by Vosper Thornycroft
- €50,000,000
M5 (ex Mirabella V) is the world’s largest sloop and one of the most advanced sailing super yachts afloat.M5: The largest single-masted sailing yacht in the world M5 is a sloop-rigged super yacht launched in 2003. At an estimated cost of over USD 50 million, she is the largest single-masted yacht ever built.
The 77.6-metre sailing yacht M5 (formerly Mirabella V) has emerged after her extensive refit at NCA Refit (2019) part of The Italian Sea Group. Having been originally built for Joseph Vittoria, the former CEO of the Avis Rent-A-Car company, and was first launched in 2004 and became a record-breaking sailing yacht.
Designed by Ron Holland and built by VT Shipbuilding, she was the largest composite yacht in the world with an 89-metre rig. Her 151-tonne lifting keel varied the draught from 4 to 10 metres.
The current owner (who acquired M5 in 2012) wanted to change the transom shape and extend the aft deck to carry a Carbon Cub seaplane. The works to achieve this began with Pendennis who saw to her new stern, major engineering upgrades, new Carbo-Link rigging and a refreshed interior by RWD in 2014.
Having noticed some problems with the newly-altered yacht – particularly in the way the raised keel box generated a lot of noise in the owner’s suite – the NCA Refit yard together with Rob Doyle Design were chosen to take on the next phase of the refit. The team cut the keel in half to move the ram housing forward, then oversaw the yacht’s exterior colour change.
The now three-tone metallic grey also sports a new composite hardtop to replace the soft bimini on the flybridge, recaulked teak decking to match the silver paintwork, new interior flooring, carpeting and fabrics, new finishes in the bathrooms, and a marble bar in the main saloon.
“M5 has been a challenging project from both an engineering and logistical perspective, but the results speak for themselves,” says Giovanni Costantino, chairman and CEO of The Italian Sea Group. “The refit market is important in its own right, but the experience and know-how we gain from these complex projects can be transferred to our new-builds, and vice-versa.”
ACCOMMODATION M5’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests overnight in 6 cabins, comprising a master suite, 3 double cabins, 2 twin cabins and 2 pullman beds. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
CONSTRUCTION & DIMENSIONS M5 features a displacement grp hull and grp superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to DNV (Det Norske Veritas) Germanischer Lloyd classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.
PERFORMANCE Powered by 2 MTU (12V2000M70) 1,080hp diesel engines sailing yacht M5 is capable of a top speed of 13 knots, and comfortably cruises at 10 knots when powered by her engines. With her 60,000 litres fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 3,455 nautical miles at 11 knots. Her water tanks store around 31,000 litres of fresh water.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!
With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.
Khabarovsk's city center
The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River
75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.
History on the rocks
The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.
Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan
The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.
The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.
Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.
Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.
A Nanai hunter (L); an ancient stone carving showing a mammoth
The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.
The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.
An abode of Shamanism
Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.
A Sikachi-Alyan's shaman
Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.
The Starukha rock formation
The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.
This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.
Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
