The aptly named Wayfinder —referring to a navigational tool—is a 224-foot aluminum multihull and only the second purpose-built catamaran support vessel in the world. (The first is its sistership Hodor .) Built in 2021 by Astilleros Armon, the vessel is the Spanish yard’s largest delivery to date.
The word on the street, or at least in the yachting community, is that the hardy-looking vessel was commissioned by Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates. Oliver Design, the Spanish studio that penned and outfitted the yacht’s interior, confirmed the unconfirmed owner is “one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.” The 10,800-square-foot interior includes crew and guest cabins, offices, a galley, a mess area, lounges and, like many support vessels these days, an infirmary.
With industrial exterior design and naval architecture by the Australian-based big-cat specialist Incat Crowther, Wayfinder pivots between a transatlantic charter yacht to a dedicated support vessel. Available for charter through Edmiston, its 2024 itinerary includes the Mediterranean, Baltic, Red Sea and Arabian Gulf for summer before heading to the Caribbean for winter.
Power is provided by a pair of MTU 16V engines that drive two Servogear controllable-pitch propellers to deliver a maximum speed of 21 knots. An impressive range of 5,500 nautical miles at 14 knots gives it the ability to do very long, oceangoing voyages.
Here are eight fascinating facts about one of the world’s most capable catamarans.
Upstairs, Downstairs
The upper deck accommodation is designed for charter guests when the boat is a superyacht and staff in support-vessel mode. Eleven en suite cabins, including nine single and two twins, sleep up to 12 guests. Twenty-two staff can be accommodated in the main-deck crew quarters. The yacht’s dedicated crew bring a range of experiences, from Master Mariners and dive instructors to royal yacht chefs and ex-navy engineers—plus a medic.
The yacht’s main deck is dedicated to a crazy selection of six tenders and myriad toys, including four Sea-Doos, a 39-foot Compass limousine that accommodates 16 guests and a 37-foot Munson Beach Lander that seats 17. There’s also an array of personal watercraft, paddleboards, Seabobs, and even an Explorer Icebreaker E-Jetboard. The bonus for serious scuba divers is the abundance of dive gear and even a decompression chamber. But unlike its sistership Hodor , the toy list doesn’t extend to a submersible.
Party Platform
Wayfinder ’s capacity to welcome up to 200 guests explains its frequent attendance at high society events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. It’s another example of how the yacht’s large helipad comes into its own, capable of hosting a formally dressed crowd for drinks and canapes. According to Incat Crowther’s technical manager Dan Mace, that comes courtesy of the vessel’s catamaran hull, which provides 60 percent more deck space and 40 percent more volume capacity than other vessels its size.
Luxury Lounging
Wayfinder ’s large open aft deck has a commercially registered helipad (meaning it’s also available for charter use) and is used to bring guests on and off the yacht in style. There’s even a dedicated “heli-lounge” where guests can wait for the helicopter transfer. Located forward on the same deck as the helipad, and within easy reach of the yacht’s elevator, the lounge has a modern design.
Technically Gifted
While the vessel is all about having fun at sea, the helm is packed with a range of technical capabilities, from the integrated bridge to the yacht’s MARSS NiDAR long-range perimeter security and drone-detection system for guest privacy and protection. The catamaran hull is further enhanced by a Praxis dynamic positioning system for keeping the yacht in place at sea. On the inside, the layout is dedicated to service areas, including waste management, laundry, workshops and storage.
Pickleball, Anyone?
When not being used for guest transfers, the sky-blue helipad conveniently doubles as a full-size pickleball court, with side lounges for guests to watch from the side lines. To prevent balls from flying into the water, a temporary three-sided net wall is erected around the edge of the court. At night, the big heli ‘H’ lights up in neon green.
Seaview Gym
The beauty of a support vessel is the large amount of space available to carry equipment, toys, and tenders, but it also frees up space for wellness and fitness. On Wayfinder ’s lower deck, the foldout beach club doubles as a well-equipped oceanfront gym for workouts that come with million-dollar views. The gym gear includes an elliptical machine, Nordic spinning bike, weight benches, treadmill, rowing machine, and punching bags. Unlike other yachts with the beach club at the stern, the aft area remains free for swimmers or just relaxing.
Environmentally Active
Built to the IMO’s latest Tier III emission guidelines, Wayfinder was designed to enhance sustainability. Its onboard treatment plant cleans all wastewater discharged to drinkable quality before being discharged. The yacht’s dry waste is also fully treated to allow the vessel to operate with a zero-discharge policy.

Bill Gates Yacht: Everything You Want To Know
In 2020 the yachting world was abuzz with news that Bill Gates had bought as stunning and advanced yacht known as Project Aqua. The massive, 370-foot concept yacht was revealed in 2019 at the Monaco Yacht Show and news soon followed that billionaire Bill Gates, once the richest man in the world and the founder of Microsoft, had commissioned the construction of his own hydrogen-powered Aqua. But that never actually happened and, in fact, as near as anyone can tell for real, Bill Gates doesn’t own a yacht at all.
So where did the story come from? What’s the deal with the Aqua? And hasn’t Bill Gates been pictured on a yacht before? Let’s get some answers.
How Much Did the Aqua Yacht Cost at the Monaco Yacht Show?
According to the stories online, Bill Gates paid $600 million for the hydrogen powered yacht. But that’s not true at all. According to the yacht makers, the Dutch company Sinot, the price tag is $645 million but no one bought it after it was revealed at the Monaco Yacht Show, and that includes Bill Gates. It’s expensive but definitely not the most expensive in the world.
How Fast is the Aqua Yacht?
Aqua is a unique yacht in the yachting world which is why it garnered so much attention in the first place. It’s the first mega yacht that runs on a fully operational liquid hydrogen and fuel cell system that features two hydrogen engines that can produce 1,341 horsepower. The top speed is 17 knots and the Aqua has a cruising speed of 12 knots. The total range is 3,750 nautical miles. The liquid hydrogen is stored in two 28-ton vacuum sealed tanks where it can be held at -253 degrees C. The only exhaust is water.
What Does the Interior of the Aqua Yacht Look Like?
The Aqua has 7 suites meant to house up to 14 guests at any given time. Two of those suites are larger VIP cabins. The ceilings throughout are 9 feet and stretch as high as 12.5 feet elsewhere thanks to the luxury Sinot yacht architecture. The vessel has room for a crew of 31 as well. The beach deck lounge aboard the boat alone looks like a luxury hotel space.
The Aqua features a bow observation room which is surrounded by windows to give a panoramic view of the ocean which has been described as the “ultimate superyacht owners lounge.” In addition, there’s a movie theater on the upper deck. It also includes a wellness center with a hydro massage room. You can also do some yoga in a workout space. There’s a fully equipped gym, a beauty salon, and even a hairdresser.
Up on the main deck there’s a luxury swimming pool that even includes a waterfall. One of the yacht’s defining features is the spiral staircase that covers all five decks and is covered by a skylight. On the way up it also offers a view of the interior of the hydrogen fuel tanks so you can see just what 56 tons of ultra cold liquid hydrogen looks like as you move between decks.
The tender garage has an array of toys such as jet skis while the main deck features a beach club with a dining area designed for all 14 guests and a lounge that converts into the cinema space.
What Yacht Has Bill Gates Actually Been On?
Bill Gates does seem to like yachts, just not enough to spend his money owning one, and that’s fair. Yachts cost millions to maintain every year. No one got rich spending millions to maintain a boat.
That said, Bill Gates has not only vacationed on yachts – he spent his 66th birthday on one – he also got married on a yacht.
In 2021, Gates made the news when he celebrated his 66th on board a luxury yacht called the Lana alongside Jeff Bezos. He spent $2 million to charter the yacht for a week and flew 50 guests out to celebrate with him.
The Lana is a 351 foot yacht with room for 12 guests and a cruising speed of 12 knots with a max speed of 18 knots. The master suite is 1,184 square feet. The room features his and hers walk-in dressing rooms and a private terrace.
Elsewhere on board you’ll find a piano in the lounge area as well as a full gym for working out. There’s both a sauna and a well-appointed spa as well. On deck you can head to the beach club or take a dip in the pool.
There are three tenders in the garage alongside a bunch of toys including various jetskis, a seabob, wakeboards, WindSurfers, fishing equipment, scuba diving equipment and more.
Back in 2014, Gates rented an even more expensive yacht, the $5 million per week Serene, to go on a vacation with his family. The Serene, once owned by Russian vodka magnate Yuri Shelfer before being purchased by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, clocked in at a massive 450 feet making it one of the world’s biggest and even had its own on board submarine
The Serene features 7 decks, a saltwater pool, a climbing wall, a surprisingly large library, health spa, outdoor cinema and a nightclub. This is all spread across 48,000 square feet.
It’s also been confirmed that Gates met his wife Melinda on a yacht owned by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, all the way back in 1994.
Why Do People Think Bill Gates Owns the Aqua?
It’s easy to see why people may have thought Gates owned the Aqua when you consider a handful of factors. First, as mentioned, we have lots of evidence that Bill Gates really does enjoy luxury yachts. The extremely high price tag was something that only a few people in the world are going to be able to afford and Gates, who doesn’t own a yacht, seems like a likely candidate for those reasons.
In addition, Gates has spent several years now as a climate activist and has supported a number of green technologies. A yacht that runs on hydrogen seems like something he would support as well. So, with no real evidence, the circumstantial evidence was enough to easily convince people. Once it’s presented as fact on the internet, and it was in many articles and videos, few people had reason to question it.
The Bottom Line
The mega yacht known as the Aqua has a price tag of $645 million and it runs on clan burning hydrogen fuel. The only byproduct of its operation is water, making it a very environmentally friendly yacht. It made waves, so to speak, when it debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2019. Rumors soon began to spread that billionaire and known climate activist Bill Gates had ordered one for $600 million. However, despite many videos and articles that refer to him as the owner, the truth is no one bought the Aqua at the yacht show and, as of 2023, Bill Gates does not own a yacht at all. He is know to charter extremely luxurious yachts for vacations and parties, such as the Lana and the Serene, but he does not own any just now.

Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon has launched the 68m/223ft luxury support catamaran WAYFINDER , a larger ‘evolved’ version of the 66.2m/217ft luxury catamaran HODOR launched in 2019.
HODOR support vessel also built by Astilleros Armon – Photo of Wayfinder will be published soon…
Incat Crowther produced her naval architecture and exterior styling, North American YCTS gave technical assistance and the interiors are the work of Oliver Design .
Notable features include four decks, of which there is an extensive upper deck aft for the storage of tenders, vehicles and water toys, plus a helipad and helicopter on the stern with a hangar below. The 14m/45.9ft beam provides ample room for both the vehicles and a workshop for spare parts and a rescue tender. The crew accommodation provides for the 18 crew running WAYFINDER and 14 additional staff or crew for expeditions.
The water and fuel storage onboard has a capacity for 22,000 litres and 200,000 litres respectively, and a pair of MTU 16V 4000 M73L diesel engines provide a top speed of 21 knots with a range to follow the mothership wherever she cruises.
To reduce the environmental impact on her destinations, M/Y WAYFINDER has two propulsion engines produce 2,832 kilowatts each that are designed to reduce the vessel’s nitrogen oxide emissions to two grams per kilowatt-hour. Wastewater is treated on board before being discharged into the ocean, and all solid waste generated is treated and stored onboard.
Construction and outfitting are still ongoing at the Burela dock before support yacht WAYFINDER commences her sea trials before being delivered to her Owner.

Interview with Ron F. Owner of WAYFINDER (Oceanis 41.1)
Proud owners of a new 2020 Oceanis 41.1, Ron Floyd and Kathy Fleming of Carlsbad, California have been sailing for as long as they’ve known each other. And Ron, a good bit longer than that.
“I first bought a 23-foot, trailerable sailboat back in the 70s,” he said, “without knowing anything about sailing. So I watched a video, put it in the water, and basically taught myself.”
Since then, Ron has owned a handful of boats, both sail and power (his other passion is scuba diving), each a little larger and with a little more performance than the one before. He had to take a hiatus in the mid-80s to focus on his financial advisory business and didn’t return to boating until eight or nine years ago with his wife, Kathy.
“Kathy and I joined some sailing clubs and were renting boats at first but got tired of cleaning and preparing our rental boat every time we wanted to spend the weekend sailing. That’s when I began to look into buying.”
His first Beneteau was an Oceanis 35.1 . “Originally, I was thinking of buying a used BENETEAU from a charter company but finally decided on a new 35.1 with the help of South Coast Yachts. ”
He joined SailTime , a fractional ownership program to defray some of the costs. “SailTime was great. We loved the economics of it, and we were able to enjoy the boat without too many scheduling conflicts with the other members.”
After a while though, he had ‘customized’ the boat with special-made spinnakers, a dinghy, and a barbecue. “Kathy and I got tired of hauling these things aboard before each of our sailing weekends then hauling them back to our garage afterward. She was embracing the sailing lifestyle more and more, and we realized that we were ready for a change.”
Two years later, Ron and Kathy took the next step in their sailing journey – a boat that was 100 percent their own. South Coast Yachts was there to help guide them again. Ron recalled,
“South Coast Yachts does such a wonderful job connecting BENETEAU owners with each other through events like the BENETEAU Cup and Rendezvous. It was only natural we use them to help us find our next boat. No matter who you work with there, whether it’s Barrett, Paul, Sean, Keenan, or the others, there’s a special connection with the customer. It’s more than a transaction. It’s a relationship.”
Ron was looking for something with a little more room – headroom specifically. The 35.1 was no problem for five-foot-tall Kathy, but for the six-foot-one Ron, going below deck had always been somewhat of a challenge.
“We had our eye on the Oceanis 41.1 or 46.1 . I was worried about the cost to outfit a boat the way I wanted to, but I had sold my company which meant we had a little more cash on hand. We went to a boat show in February and were able to compare the 35.1, 41.1, and 46.1 side by side. Kathy’s choice was the 41.1 which was fortunate for me since I had already ordered one!”
So Ron and Kathy took ownership of their Oceanis 41.1, christened her ‘Wayfinder’, and never looked back.
Kathy, who started out as a luke-warm sailor, loved the idea of having their own boat with the technological conveniences the 41.1 offered and is now as enthusiastic about sailing as Ron. “I didn’t want her to become a ‘sailing widow.’ That’s not going to happen with ‘Wayfinder.’ She can haul lines and set sails with the push of a button. The air conditioning is her favorite. And with Wi-Fi, we can both conduct business onboard if we need to. Now she’s the one who can’t wait to get out on the water!”
Ron is especially impressed with the 41.1’s seaworthiness. “The boat just feels stable,” he said, “And a boat that feels stable feels safer. The acceleration is surprising for a boat this size too. I have confidence in handling her myself, so offshore trips are something I feel very comfortable with.”
And even though ‘Wayfinder’ is the biggest boat Ron and Kathy have owned, Ron finds it the easiest to dock and maneuver in tight spaces. “With the bow thruster, I can dock this boat easier than the 35.1, especially in heavier winds.”
Both Ron and Kathy are still finding their rhythm aboard ‘Wayfinder’ and having a lot of fun while doing so. Ron said they’re on the water a couple of days a week including daysail excursions and coastal cruising, harboring overnight on some of the secluded Southern California bays, and even racing her in the BENETEAU Cup events. A voyage to Catalina is currently in the works too. Social distancing has never been so much fun!
Ron summed up his impression of his new BENETEAU this way, “it’s the perfect combination of waterline length and volume coupled with responsiveness and performance. All the little things it has add up to a boat I feel comfortable and confident with. The cockpit is one of the best I’ve experienced. There’s plenty of room for people to move around without banging into others’ knees, and when the wings are out on the table, it can easily seat six.”
If you have the sailing bug, Ron has this advice: “Take classes and learn how to sail. Before you make the investment, you need to know what you’re doing. Rent a lot of boats, and find a size that you feel comfortable with.”
As someone who has owned his share of sailboats and powerboats, he maintained the difference between the two is like the difference between the journey and the destination. “Sailing is a connection between you and the ocean. There’s also a greater sense of camaraderie in the sailing community. Powerboating is like a taxi that can take you quickly to your preferred destination.”
Both are outstanding ways to spend your free time. Know which one you’re looking for and enjoy!
