I like this place a lot. Might not be for everyone, though. You can play what you want on the jukebox, friendly barstaff, near naked girls during the day, good strong drinks. Everything you need for some quality day drinking or to get your night off to a great start.

Welcome to the Redneck Yacht Club: Bring your own beers, babes and buggies

By Whitney Bryen

Pieces of a rebel flag are plastered across the bikini of a young girl thrusting a Budweiser can toward the sky as she slides across the muddy seat of an ATV.

"We love your place," she yells, pointing a megaphone toward the owner of an all terrain vehicle park in Punta Gorda.

The driver quickly turns the wheel spraying mud toward the group, a show of respect for the man who gave off-road fanatics a place to play.

Danny Kelly, owner of the Redneck Yacht Club, waves at the couple from his throne, perched 13 feet above the mud in his custom-built swamp buggy.

"I'm having as much fun watching these people enjoy themselves as I am doing it myself," Kelly said.

They say as boys get bigger so do their toys. Kelly's friends say he has always been a big kid at heart and the opening of the Redneck Yacht Club in January after years of planning proves their point.

Fourth of July weekend was the sixth event open to the public. Park staff wouldn't say how many people paid $30 per person for the day or $40 for the weekend to get into the park over the holiday, but reported more than 15,000 guests during Memorial Day weekend, so it seems the word is out about the muddy playground.

The 800-acre ATV park is said to be the biggest mud hole in the state and the only one of its kind, including amenities, such as riding trails, a race track and camp sites.

For years, Collier County has attempted to give off-road enthusiasts an ATV park of their own on land promised by the South Florida Water Management District in a 2003 agreement. The commissioners recently voted to sue the district for the promised 640 acres, meaning those plans could be wrapped up in litigation for years to come.

Until the squabble is resolved, ATVers in Collier will have to make the drive to Punta Gorda.

If they go, Kevin Hovancik and his girlfriend Dorine Martin, of Naples, suggest they trailer their off road vehicle for the long drive.

"The first time we went there, we drove our Suzuki Samurai all the way up (U.S.) 29," Hovancik said. "The little Sami's top speed is 45 mph so it took three hours. But it was so worth it."

The couple described the park as an "amusement park for trucks" where everyone is out to help everyone else.

The rules are simple: BYOB ? bring your own beer, babes and buggies.

There is no official invitation but the party is open to everyone. No reservations required.

After performing a vehicle search for guns, axes, knives, machetes and anything else that could be used to cause serious harm in a testosterone-infused brawl, employees in camouflage cut-offs ask for a signature on the facility's liability waiver, including a promise not to sue.

Security is tight at the entrance, but anything goes once you get through the gates of the Redneck Yacht Club.

The first left is the entrance to an overnight camping area with hundreds of tents, pop-up campers and recreational vehicles lined up in rows. Neighbors for the next 48 hours.

An American flag flies high on a flagpole of one camp site. Next door, a Ku Klux Klan flag is pinned to the antenna of an ATV.

The camp sites off the main dirt drive are the end of the road for standard vehicles. Only trucks, sport utility vehicles and off-roaders can survive the terrain near the mud holes and ATV trails.

A bath tub is nailed to the back of a home-made rig for use as a cooler filled with beer. The driver stops just shy of a mud hole, pops open a can and chugs it quickly. As he starts up the engine someone hands him another beer and they're off.

Drinking while driving is allowed at the Redneck Yacht Club as long as "you don't get too rowdy," according to park staff.

The layout of the riding trails, bridges and a buggy wash make the park unique, Kelly said. The layout was well planned and the various amenities were designed from Kelly's riding experience.

The main mud hole is situated along the edges of the first campground, a perfect viewing spot for campers, who sit in torn lawn chairs and cheer on those daring enough to venture through the muddy ponds.

The riding trails run through a wooded terrain, with bridges strategically placed to help the passage from one area to the next. It's the combination of the trails and mud holes that makes the Redneck Yacht Club one-of-a-kind.

On Fourth of July weekend, there was little separating the trails and the park's four official mud holes thanks to a deluge of rain the week before.

"We almost couldn't open," Kelly said of the swampy ground.

In preparation for an extra muddy weekend, the Redneck Yacht Club employed two men whose job was to "get people out of the mud."

The park contains four mud holes varying in size, depth and terrain. Pine Island Sound is the biggest, covering an area larger than a football field with soupy mud that ranges from one foot to about five feet deep. Five or six islands spread throughout the hole offer the off roaders refuge. Other, lesser holes are the Grouper Hole, Gator Slough and Hog Waller. They all offer a unique challenge for riders and those recovering vehicles.

Getting stuck in the mud is a game for most of these off-roaders. First, they trek through the mud looking for that one spot that will give them the challenge they crave. But the challenge has only begun when the tires disappear underneath a pool of mud.

Manuevering the vehicles out of the mud gives the drivers a sense of accomplishment. And bragging rights.

It's a whole other game trying to pull the stuck vehicles out of the mud, with bragging rights of its own.

A series of venders set up along the main drag. All the staples are there, including an Italian ice stand to a barbecue pit. Those looking to fit in with the crowd can get their fresh duds from the "Bucked Up" apparel booth.

There is something for everyone from the hungry and thirsty to "Anglers with Attitude"

Jayme Judge, of Venice, said she spends every long weekend with friends at one mud hole or another and the Redneck Yacht Club is their favorite. Judge loves mud holes so much she even got engaged in one.

"There is only one thing missing," Judge said, "a swimming hole."

Everyone's skin is the same mud-splattered brown with the exception of those exiting the buggy wash. The closest thing to a swimming spot is the home-made spray station intended to clean vehicles of all sizes and their passengers.

Wooden posts with shower heads attached form the primal wash station. The water constantly flows as buggies and ATVs take their turn driving slowly through.

Much like children playing in a front yard sprinkler, the spray station provides a temporary escape from the heat. Others pull up to the side of the drive-through for no other reason then to watch the young girls' clothes cling tightly to their bodies as they rinse off the muddy scars of the day.

A thin, blond in Daisy Dukes and cowboy boots attracts a crowd as she rubs the dirt off her tan legs, which are as dark as the mud splattered on them. Her string bikini top tightens as she shakes her hair dry in what resembled a shampoo commercial. The scene, only seconds long, seems to be moving in slow motion.

A buggy pulls out of the wash, water spilling over the sides of the makeshift pool attached to the back. A woman dances and the Mardi Gras beads that are wrapped around the rails of the buggy rattle as she twirls a red strand over head.

She shakes her head side to side, her long hair flinging water on the driver. Both are still splattered with mud despite the wash.

Most of the buggies are home-made rigs with personalized touches. No two are the same.

Many of the rigs are made of scrap metal welded together to form a frame that connects the balloon tires to the ragged seats.

Bumper stickers containing rebel flags with sayings like "We don't call them Yankees we call them targets," and "American by birth, Southern by intelligent choice," are the only detail that can be seen through the thick layers of mud.

A ride resembling a pickup truck, rolls into the mud hole and slides across the island in the middle without breaking. It's obvious the ride was made from the parts of at least four different trucks by its green hood, orange bed and blue and yellow doors. On the front windshield is a decal that says "Livin' the mud life" and out the passenger side window is an arm holding up a peace sign.

A camo coated ATV moves slower than some due to it's tank tread with a metal chain rolling across the small round supports. On the driver's seat a man lifts his shirt to show a bandage that covers the tattoo he got that morning from the tattoo and piercing vendor. An American flag waves off each steering handle and the antenna. Small mementoes to honor the holiday he celebrates covered in mud.

"Rednecks are innovative," said Bruce Ball, of North Fort Myers. "The proof is here. Just look at some of these rides."

Ball describes himself as rough around the edges and said he likes the Redneck Yacht Club because he can be his "true redneck self."

Kevin Kern, of south Fort Myers, said he experienced the mud hole up close and personal, when a friend flipped a jeep jumping berms at the park during Fourth of July weekend.

"When (the driver) jumped the last berm, we went way into the air," Kern said. "The nose of the jeep tipped forward landing on the front tires, then hit the windshield and rolled onto the roof."

Kern said he remembers seeing the water raise as he reached to unbuckle his harness. He managed to get loose, but was submerged in water to his chest and mud splashed over his head and shoulders.

Kern said within seconds of the crash park security and visitors swarmed the scene to help pull the upside down jeep, named Blown Crazy, out of the mud. There were no major injuries and Kern said if he had the chance to do it again he would.

Kern said it was all in good fun and thanked the Redneck Yacht Club for providing a place for people to enjoy riding and hanging out with their friends.

Rain boots to flip-flops to cowboy boots and bare feet stomped through the mud of the Redneck Yacht Club during Fourth of July weekend.

Off-roaders off all ages shared the riding trails and mud holes of the tough terrain.

A mixture of beer, mud and the outdoors provided a sanctuary for Florida's ATVers craving a place to honor the country they love. The country that gave them the right to call themselves rednecks.

The Redneck Yacht Club is closed for the remainder of the summer and will reopen with a Halloween bash on Friday, Oct. 30. Staff at the Redneck Yacht Club said during season they are planning to be open for at least one weekend a month.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
