Valentina in her hometown of Venice - photo: Giovanni Malgarini
Valentina Zannier
The architect turned superyacht interior designer talks about her journey into the yachting world – her creative process – and the joy she feels when she witnesses a happy owner admiring the finished project.
Italian yacht designer Valentina Zannier has years of experience in interior yacht design under her belt – but life could have gone down a very different path were it not for a good dose of serendipity. “Growing up in Venice, surrounded by tourists admiring every angle of my city, studying architecture was a logical choice, even if it took my parents’ convincing to push me in that direction,” explains Zannier.
She duly studied architecture in Venice and then went on to work in the field – all the while marvelling at yachting interiors in magazines on the side. When she was introduced to Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, founders of yacht designers Nuvolari-Lenard, she jumped at the chance to work with them. “Things started to move really quickly,” she recalls. “I was fully immersed in this incredible world from the very start.”
Happily, it turned out that her architectural background had huge advantages for the new direction her career was taking. “Understanding architecture really helps when you’re designing boat interiors,” Zannier explains. “You have a good perception of the space and are used to making practical things beautiful.”
After a few big projects, Zannier was offered a partnership, and two decades later, having worked on some of the most exceptional yachts in the business, she struck out on her own and set up her eponymous studio .
The creative process
With a project as complex as a superyacht, it is no surprise that there are many stages to the creative process of yacht design and Zannier relishes each one. “ The first stage for me is sharing a special book I’ve prepared with the owners. This is packed with a collection of photos of anything from hotels to real estate, even joinery details, pieces of furniture and lighting. From there, they get back to me with the sort of things they like and this is a big help.”
Contact with the owners throughout the process is obviously paramount and that means that Zannier’s job naturally involves a lot of travel. “It’s not just about sitting down with them,” she says, “it’s about understanding the way they live and the way they want to live on the yacht. You have to spend time with them, embrace their nationality and even the way they dress.”
After that, it’s time for Zannier to start sketching. “I am a big believer in sketching and drawing by hand,” she says. “Today’s technology allow us to produce incredibly realistic renderings, but I love the idea of an idea being born in my brain then passing through my hand to a sheet of paper”
The most satisfying part of course, comes at the end of a project, when the yacht is ready for the client to see. “Designing a yacht is a very personal affair that can go on for years. Having spent all this time with the owner, it is very special to receive messages and lovely videos from the owner as they enjoy their yacht”
Designing for families
Each project is of course enormously different from the next – and Zannier is quick to point out that not every superyacht is designed to be ‘pristine or high gloss’ as might be perceived by the outside world. “A lot of the time the boats are being used for family travel,” she says. Boats built for families give Zannier the freedom to let her imagination run wild. “If the boat isn’t being built for charter, you can really go crazy customising the rooms for the kids.”
One project that springs to mind for Zannier is a yacht with a huge cinema room. “All the chairs flipped down and the room became this enormous field of soft play mattresses anchored by stairs and ropes. It was super fun.”
Safety is another challenge when designing for children. “I am known in my industry for designing things that have curves. I see this as a big help because kids like to run!”

Sustainability in design
Over the last five years or so, Zannier has noticed a change in the way that owners approach design. “Suddenly, there is this awareness about sustainability. Many of the owners are younger now, so it could be a generational thing, but I also think that we are far more sensitive to these things as an industry.”
Despite being passionate about sustainability, Zannier is realistic about the challenges and perceptions of the industry. “This is a complex world, and I would be a liar to say that a superyacht is a sustainable object, but we are all trying to contribute to find better solutions.” For Zannier, that means proposing materials that are sustainable and guiding owners towards environmentally responsible choices.
“We are also helped by the suppliers now who are working to replace materials that have a negative impact on nature. I no longer want or need to propose materials that use the skin of an animal for example. Technology helps too – there are printing technologies that create beautiful yet sustainable leather-like textiles and eco-friendly materials. New alternatives are being developed all the time.”
Zannier has also noticed that shipyards are doing their bit. All of this helps, she says. “If you’re a young owner approaching your first yacht project, you can’t help but look around and see sustainability everywhere. Owners have a sharper eye for this now. There is still a long way to go, but progress is being made and every effort counts.”

Valentina Zannier on Why She Believes Sustainability starts with Interiors
Written By: Rachel Ingram
“I never really wanted to be an architect,” says Valentina Zannier, partner and Chief of Interior Design at Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard. “I wanted to do something linked to art, like my brother who is a musician and an artist, but my parents said we can’t have two artists in the family and sent me to university.”
Zannier’s introduction to the industry may have been somewhat begrudging, but while studying architecture in Venice she discovered a passion and talent for design. She got her start at a design firm in her hometown of Treviso, before being introduced to Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, founders of Nuvolari-Lenard, a Venice-based studio that’s best known for the exterior and interior design of superyachts.
“I went for an interview without knowing what boat design was and somehow they gave me a trial,” she says. “Carlo and Dan said, ‘just sketch out what is in your head’. It was a 150-foot Palmer Johnson, which was a very big boat for me, and thank God it was because I treated the drawings like a house, without thinking too much about what a boat was.”
To Zannier’s delight, it was a success, and the drawings, which signalled the start of a long career with the firm, can still be found on the wall in the studio’s Venice office.
Over the ensuing years, Zannier worked her way up to partner (she remains the only female partner in the company) and has worked on some of the world’s most revered yachts including Black Pearl, DAR and Seven Seas. And while technology has progressed over the years, she remained committed to her traditional way of sketching: “I still work with hands only; I don't use the computer. I just sketch by hand.”
One of the studio’s most recent projects, a 115m Lürssen named Ahpo, was showcased at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show in September. Nuvolari-Lenard was behind both Ahpo’s striking, supercar-inspired exterior and her serene interior, which features plenty of indoor-outdoor living, an abundance of glass, and hints of nature throughout. “As a designer with a long, long career, you pick some projects and remember them as very dear to you, and Ahpo is one of those projects,” the designer says. “She’s very beautiful.”
Another project Zannier is especially proud of is another 142m superyacht, also built in Germany, although she’s able to reveal very few details about is “super-secret” interiors. “I can tell you the interior is very modern and contemporary but not cold at all,” she says. “It's full of rounded shapes and details. It’s not as rich as Ahpo inside, because Ahpo is more classically oriented, but it is eclectic and balanced with a huge volume.”
Within her design work, Zannier can often be found advocating for sustainable solutions and promoting the use of alternative materials. She believes that sustainability begins with interiors. “People are so focused on things like propellers and hydrogen but if you take a boat and you empty it, the biggest part of what’s inside is related to interiors,” she says.
The self-proclaimed animal lover and vegan is most passionate about the use of non-animal alternatives. “I’m very sensitive to animals. If I could, I’d have a farm with chickens and dogs, but I live in a small apartment with a big cat,” she says. “I am the first to show my clients sustainable alternatives. Unless someone wants something specific, I focus on proposing finishes that nowadays impeccably match the original materials that often come from a long chain of anything but a green approach.”
“I love my job, but I do realise the industry is sometimes a paradox, and I will do anything I can to make my customers understand that there is another way,” she adds. “Technology can help with replicating materials. Nowadays, you can get some beautiful fake leather that you can’t even differentiate from snake or cow leather or fish skin.”
Beyond sustainability, modern tech is driving innovation in all areas of yacht design, from spa facilities to sound systems, and Zannier makes full use of the latest developments in her work, particularly when she’s creating a wellness space.
“The technology you see on board now is amazing – it’s getting better and better,” she says. “With the last big projects we delivered, we were able to have a salt room, a snow room, and a floating pool where you can be suspended in salt water. We also have Cryotherapy, which I’ve only seen before in hotel spas – it's very complicated as you need to have hydrogen and a dedicated room for that. Wellness centres are also getting bigger, and this is surely linked to the fact the owners spend more time on board.”
Looking back on her journey, Zannier believes that although she’s a trained architect, she’s always been an artist at heart. “It’s helped me working on real estate projects, but at the end of the day, my artistic approach and attitude became useful in my career, because when you work in interior design, you have to generate shapes and concepts from scratch, so you need to be creative.”

Joshua Ryan
Growing up as a 90's child in the vibrant California East Bay area and Sacramento Valley region, my childhood was filled with the thrill of competitive gymnastics. However, it was during the summertime, away from the gym, that my true passion for boating and water sports blossomed. Spending countless hours at the lake and wakeboarding with my family ignited a lifelong love affair with open waters. While I may have caught the sailing bug a little later in life than some, it certainly hit me hard and fast. The enchantment of sailing captured my heart during a sailing excursion as part of a cruise in 2018. From that moment on, I sought out numerous sailing trips, including a transformative 7-day charter with Gustavo, my future husband, in the mesmerizing Angra dos Reis region of Brazil—an experience that forever holds a special place in my heart. On a bit of a whim, I visited the Fort Lauderdale boat show in October 2018, ultimately leading to the purchase of Valentina in Marina Del Ray, CA, just five months later. In pursuit of warmer waters and the allure of better and more affordable margaritas, Gustavo and I embarked on a remarkable journey down the Pacific Mexican coast, welcoming the addition of our fur baby, Linda, during our exploration of the Costa Rican volcanoes. Our adventurous spirit then propelled us to transit the Panama Canal and become captivated by the splendor of the San Blas Islands. While we were basking in the beauty of the San Blas, the world was abruptly halted by the arrival of Covid-19. For four months, we found ourselves quarantined in the lush jungles of Puerto Lindo, Panama, tied to a mooring. With perseverance and a touch of good fortune, we obtained special clearance from the coast guard, enabling us to embark on a non-stop seven-day sail to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, a destination with fewer restrictions and better tacos. As Covid-19 protocols began to ease, we resumed our journey, navigating through the waters of Florida, the Bahamas, and twice around the enchanting eastern Caribbean, including memorable stops in Los Roques, Venezuela, and the ABC Islands in 2022. Following our journey through The Thorny Path in early 2023, we decided to make the eastern Caribbean our home and share our passion for sailing by offering extraordinary charters throughout the Leeward and Windward Islands. Come embark on an unforgettable adventure with us aboard Valentina, where we combine our love for sailing, expertise in the travel and hospitality industry, and commitment to creating exceptional experiences. Whether you seek relaxation, thrilling water sports, or immersive cultural encounters, our charters promise to exceed your expectations. Join us on Valentina and discover the true meaning of luxury, freedom, and the joy of sailing in paradise. License: 100T Master

Originally hailing from an untouched farm town nestled in the picturesque state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, I spent my formative years surrounded by rolling hills, lush forests, freshwater rivers, waterfalls, and abundant greenery. Despite being far from the ocean, my vivid imagination transformed the vast blue sky into a boundless sea of wonder. Since my arrival in the USA, I have immersed myself in various domains, including the restaurant industry, hospitality, and customer service. Rooted in my unwavering passion for service, I take pride in my keen attention to detail, sincerity, and the Brazilian concept of 'aconchego'—a warm and cozy atmosphere. My life took an extraordinary turn when destiny brought Josh and me together and we embarked on an amazing sailing journey. One day we simply left the ordinary life to sail the world and experience the joy of discovering the unknown, with the faith and courage to learn something new every day. Onboard Valentina we had found our new home, but it wasn’t a place, it was a marvelous ongoing adventure. Join us on this remarkable experience as we embrace the essence of hospitality, cultural exchange, and the pursuit of lifelong memories aboard Valentina. Together, let's sail towards extraordinary horizons. License: 1000T Master, STCW

Falcon Yachts flies high again with the creation of a new Legacy
Here, we speak with valentina antimi, business development director, about falcon yachts’ past, present and future.….
After a long and careful search for a prime investment vehicle in Italy, in 2019 a Middle Eastern venture capital company found what they were looking for in Falcon Yachts. Both the strength and history of the brand and the intrinsic value of its facilities and location made Falcon Yachts a very strategic investment. Here, we speak with Valentina Antimi, business development director, about Falcon Yachts’ past, present and future...
Valentina, can you tell me something of the history of Falcon Yachts?
Falcon has always been synonymous with unique yachts. After 20 years working in the luxury sector, Edoardo Spreafico founded Cantieri Navali Falcon in Viareggio, Italy, and began building yachts with soul that were manufactured so owners could enjoy the freedom and joy of a day spent on the water as an exclusive experience. It was 1988 and Cantieri Navali Falcon began by specialising in fibreglass motoryachts in the 15-35m range. Hallmarks were classic lines, refined interiors and exceptional performance at sea.
In 1992, Falcon Yachts was founded as a sister company to Cantieri Navali Falcon to respond to the growing demand for larger yachts. After Spreafico sadly passed away in 2018, the shipyard changed hands and subsequently was acquired with the intention to bring back this historical brand in Italian yachting.
Italy’s shipbuilding tradition is well known, and the local docks have been home to some of the most famous and best-loved names in Italian yachting. Can you tell us about Pisa’s Navicelli area?
The Navicelli Canal, which gives its name to the area, was commissioned in the late 1500s by Cosimo I de’ Medici to connect Pisa to the bustling port in Livorno. The name originates from the small boats, called navicelli, that were used to transport goods at the time. Changes have been made over the years and now it’s wider and deeper than it used to be. It’s in a truly strategic position right by Pisa’s Galileo Galilei airport, close to the Autostrada and with direct access to the Mediterranean.
The location is a plus for owners coming to check on the progress of the build of their yachts?
Yes, being close to Pisa, Viareggio and Florence it’s convenient for owners who want to check on their yacht in build while enjoying a Tuscan vacation. Since the Navicelli area is a shipbuilding hub we can count on a deep pool of talented local artisans and craftsmen who have years of experience in shipbuilding. Our shipyard is exceptional because we have a freehold on the land and 86m of frontage on the canal where we have requested permission to build a launching ramp.
How large are the shipyard’s facilities?
We have 11,000 sqm of covered sheds composed of three units, all of which are 13m high. Two are 4,525 sqm and the other, which we will use for working steel and aluminium and other hot works and for priming before painting, is 1,150 sqm. We also have a large dry dock area and the canal front, about 80m long, that I mentioned before.
Steel and aluminium, are those new-build materials for Falcon?
Yes. Traditionally, Falcon Yachts built fast displacement models in fibreglass, but our CEO is interested in expanding our production into steel and aluminium. The first yacht that we have sold, a 40m fast displacement model from our Legacy line that is scheduled for delivery in 2022, is in fibreglass but the next Legacy 40 and 45 models that we have built the nesting structures for will be in aluminium. The 50m full displacement yacht that we will be constructing next will be in steel and aluminium.
Can you tell me a bit about the Legacy line?
Our Legacy 40 and 45m yachts connect our current production to the heritage left to us by Edoardo Spreafico. With design by Quartostile, these models are enjoying an excellent market success. Owners really appreciate the balance between comfort and performance, and areas such as the sky lounge and the beach. The Legacy 45, for example, will have a 4.3 x 5.1m pool by its beach platform, a unique feature that is getting a lot of attention. The aft section has fold-down bulwarks around the pool, so it becomes a real terrace on the sea. Interiors are customisable and fitted with luxury materials. On top of that, the tender garage is floodable and is large enough for a 7.2m tender. Plus, there are spaces on board for two jet skis. Features like this mean that the Legacy line will be leaving its own legacy for years to come.
So the Legacy line is just the beginning?
Yes. When the two yachts in the Legacy line are completed, as previously mentioned, we will begin work on a 50m full displacement yacht in steel and aluminium that will have strong, good looks. We are continuing to invest in structures and talent, in fact we have a tender out for designs for some new projects and are evaluating the entries.
What happens after the yachts are delivered?
Falcon has always maintained a client-centric approach. From the moment our owners close on their contracts we accompany them through the build process, working together on everything from selecting features such as spa pools to choosing fabrics and finishes for the interiors. We continue that experience with an attentive after-sales and warranty service to ensure that the quality of the Falcon Yachts owner’s experience is as high as our build quality.
So is it safe to say that Falcon Yachts has spread its wings and is ready to fly high again?
Yes! And we’d like to invite prospective owners to come to see our Navicelli facilities to experience first-hand what Falcon Yachts is all about.

Exclusive: On board the secretive 62m CRN superyacht Voice
Italian shipyard CRN lifts a corner of the veil on a splendid secretive yacht, the 62 metre Voice . The first yacht CRN built to comply with the new IMO Tier III requirements. Replete with technology and gifted with the ability to cruise far and wide in exceptional silence.
The custom yacht ordered in April 2016 and delivered at the beginning of summer 2020 is as distinctive as it is secretive. As soon as she left the yard, she began cruising and did so for the entire summer season. As she is about to embark for her second season, CRN shares some of the history behind the construction of one of the most technologically advanced yachts it has built to date.
The story began as it often does at the Monaco Yacht Show . The owners met with CRN there in 2015 and discussions began about what would morph into a made-to-measure yacht developed from the owners’ vision, from her exterior looks and colours, inspired by their favourite car – a Rolls Royce – to how music sounds on board. As the yacht’s name infers, music is an important part of these owners’ life and not only did they want audio equipment fit for audiophiles, but they also did not want any noise to interfere with their enjoyment of crystalline sound.
Early in the discussions, the shipyard suggested designers able to give life to their vision and from that select group, the owners selected the Venetian team of Nuvolari-Lenard , who worked closely with CRN’s team and a select group of subcontractors on a distinctive yacht of the highest calibre.
“ Voice is a full custom yacht,” says CRN’s engineering manager. “We made the owners’ vision a reality, not only in terms of the interior but also with the naval architecture. This is not based on a naval platform.” Voice’s displacement hull in steel, with a bulbous bow below a sharp entry, was developed for her and was tested through CFD analysis first and then subjected to as close as you can get to real-life conditions in a water tank. “Obviously (the tank test) served to assess the seakeeping and propeller efficiency. The sea trials and the recent cruises of the vessel have confirmed the hull efficiency.” he says. The maximum range of this yacht that displaces 1,105 tons is 5,300 nm at 12 knots on a fuel capacity of 140,000 litres. Top speed exceeded the contract goal, and Voice can reach 16.5 knots at the top range of her twin MTU 12V4000 M63 engines.
The tank test had another goal, which was nearly as important as fine-tuning appendages for optimal seakeeping and that was to nip in the bud noise or vibration. "Everything was assessed to understand if noise and vibration could go through the yacht,” the engineering manager says. The desired decibel levels were low – lower than those that quality a vessel for the RINA classification society’s Comfort Class notation – and achieving them was a contractual obligation, as well as a matter of engineering pride. The CRN shipyard has long invested in R&D and its in-house engineering team likes to stay at the cutting edge of innovation.
Although it’s nearly impossible to detect its presence from the outside, Voice has a large beach club. It’s a space close to the engine room and shafts and propellers are just below. Even, and perhaps especially there, the owners wanted peace and quiet.
CRN did not take any chances. “Every single measure was taken; we used floating walls, floors and ceilings, dampers for every rotating machinery, no matter how small, and every single pipe and high-flow (valve) control has been tested. At the end, we reached 60 decibels underway in this space very close to the machinery space, and less than 36 at anchor, so huge results.” In all, the insulation represents about 70 tons of materials. Everything that’s above water, including the curvaceous topsides and vertical bow, started on the drawing boards of Nuvolari Lenard who interpreted the owners’ wishes for “a boat (that) should be immediately recognisable and would look to the future.”
The CRN project architect for Voice notes how remarkable it is that designers can project themselves four to five years in the future – which is how long it may take to go from concept to reality – but even beyond that, that they can conceive of a design that will look modern a decade or more after they created it.
Nuvolari Lenard have shown this ability many times in the past, but Carlo Nuvolari credits the many hours they spent with CRN and the owners to “assimilate all the inspiring ideas that led us to Voice . Her signature feature is the long cadence of her lines,” he says. “The gunwale swings along and down in a smooth unbroken curve from bow to stern; this has been a visual hallmark of ours for many years.”
Her styling is what her owners wanted: dynamic and strong. It was up to the shipyard’s welders and craftsmen to make incredibly smooth metal panels able to sustain a mirror-like Awlgrip paint in unforgiving dark and metallic tones that reveal any bump or dimple. The superstructure is shaped from sheets of aluminium. No composite parts, foam or glass, were used to mould the complex and sinuous shapes.
The bow is striking and the Voice project architect marvels at how lines and various concave and convex shapes converge flawlessly on that thin slice of steel. The benefits of a vertical bow on the seakeeping, hull efficiency and interior spaces are well proven but so is the tendency of blunt bows to allow waves to wash over the foredeck. But CRN has added a secret weapon against sea spray. “We have an automatic carbon-made spray rail, integrated inside the bow. It’s a thin carbon blade fully hidden inside the structure that the captain can bring out when he wants depending on sea conditions. The spray rail has been tested during a tank test phase to assess its efficacy,” CRN’s engineering manager says.
Many more secrets are concealed within the yacht’s shapely structure – private guest spaces such as a large pool on the sun deck, a full owner’s deck with top-to-bottom windows, a garage that has room for two custom tenders (it would fit an 8.3 metre Riva Iseo), and water toys, a hidden rescue tender accessed from the chain locker space, wing stations that slide off the bridge deck to allow the captain a better view when docking and of course the beach club.
The yacht’s paint itself is a bit of a secret, changing with the light. It’s a combination of a metallic smokey quartz custom colour on the hull (a dark shade of brown), silver sand on the superstructure and jet-black details. Blond teak decks conceal all deck equipment from view. Inside, the design by Valentina Zannier, who heads the interior division at Nuvolari Lenard, is a treasure trove of fine details. Voice’s architect cites as one example, a geometric pattern that has been repeated on a custom-made rug and the wood of a custom piece of furniture made by List. The result has to be left to the imagination as the owners don’t want to reveal anything of their floating oasis.
Plus, it is a smart yacht. The moment the owners get on board, the yacht adjusts to their personal settings – no guessing game and readjusting lights, music playlists or temperature. “Think of the new iMac, when you activate the touch ID, it comes with your configuration, this yacht works like that,” says Voice’s project architect. CRN worked with system integrator Videoworks on the sophisticated audiovisual system. It was so central to the brief that cabinets were made to fit the curvature of a TV screen, and not the other way around.
The smart layout creates separate access patterns for the 12 guests and 17 crew and staff, stemming as much from a desire for guests to enjoy privacy as for the crew to perform their work unencumbered. The crew’s comfort was paramount, and their cabins received the same level of attention when it comes to noise and vibration as the guest cabins did.
It’s smart in other ways too. Its HUG scrubbing system and Selective Catalytic Reduction reduce 70 per cent of total NOx emissions (which is CRN’s standard moving forward) and the yacht received an additional AUT – UMS class notation, meaning its machinery can operate without the continual intervention of an engineer. “It’s probably one of the best yachts that I have had an opportunity to work on. It’s really iconic,” Voice’s project architect says. But there is more to come from CRN, which has floated more than 400 vessels of all kinds to date. Currently, four more custom yachts are under construction at the shipyard in Ancona, Italy, ranging in size from 52 metres to 72 metres.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.
by Maria Sapozhnikova
The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.
This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.
A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.
It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.
The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.
Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.
Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
