The 20 Fastest SuperYachts in the World

By Alex Holmes

Updated on August 14, 2023

Fastest Superyachts

Yachts were always associated with leisure, comfort, and luxury, floating gently in a gorgeous location or cruising unhurried to the next, but somewhere along the way, something changed. Yachts started becoming faster and more powerful, and their owners more obsessed with these characteristics than anything else. But that’s the way with every kind of vehicle these days, isn’t it?

Mankind is obsessed with speed. That’s a given. And it applies to everything, including superyachts, which, despite their size, can achieve impressive speeds over water.

Whether that speed is actually needed is debatable, but one can’t ignore that there are quite a few capable yachts out there and that the competition for the fastest superyacht in the world is a fierce one, as in everything that involves the man’s thirst for speed.

The following superyachts manage to blend both the need for speed and the craving for luxury. But these are above everything else, the fastest yachts in the world right now.

Let’s have a look.

 • 20. Cara Montana – 45 knots

Cara Montana Yacht

Cara Montana is a smaller yacht, manufactured in 2019 by a shipyard based in Genoa, called Otam. It’s a gorgeous maritime vehicle which spans only 25.9 meters in length, but is beautiful and powerful enough to impress.

Powered by twin MTU engines, outputting a total of 5,200 hp together, and equipped with twin surface drives, Cara Montana is able to reach a top speed of 45 knots, or just under 52 mph.

 • 19. Alamshar – 45 knots

Alamshar yacht

Completed in 2014 after a waiting time of 13 years spent in the manufacturing process, the Alamshar yacht can reach 45 knots, thanks to its twin Rolls-Royce Marine engines and three waterjets.

The naval architecture of the vessel was made by Donald L. Blount & Associates, the exterior design by Pininfarina, and the interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon. The whole project was put together by the Devonport shipyard in Falmouth, United Kingdom.

The Alamshar is 50 meter long, and costed a jaw dropping $200 million, paid by Aga Khan IV, for whom the custom yacht was made.

 • 18. Moon Goddess – 45 knots

Moon Goddess Yacht

Another lovely vessel from the superyacht world is the Moon Goddess. It’s on the smaller size, being only 35 meter long, but it’s capable of reaching 45 knots. The ship was built by Danish Yachts, with the naval architecture and exterior designs made by Espen Øino, a superyacht design icon.

The Moon Goddess can take up to six guests in three posh cabins, two twins and one for the owner, plus a crew of five. It’s propelled to a cruise speed of 25 knots, or the maximum of 45, by twin MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines which generate a combined 7,498 hp.

 • 17. Shergar – 45 knots

Shergar Yacht

The acclaimed German shipyard Lürssen built Shergar in 1983 to be among the fastest yachts in the world. Decades later, it still holds its own among better and more technological advanced vessels.

Equipped with two MTU 12V 396 TB83 diesel power plants, and two Allison 571-KF gas turbines, the Shergar is capable of cruising at 40 knots and reaching a top speed of 45 knots.

 • 16. Seafire – 46 knots

Seafire Yacht

Seafire is a super yacht manufactured by AB Yachts, an Italian shipyard known for some impressive vessels. This one is among their fastest, able to reach a top speed of 46 knots.

The 42 meter super yacht is powered by a setup of three MTU 16V M94 units and three waterjets, giving it the possibility to cruise at an impressive speed of 43 knots, only 3 below its top speed.

 • 15. Octopussy 007 – 53.2 knots

Octopussy 007

Built back in 1988 by the renowned Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts and carrying a little of James Bond in its name, the Octopussy 007 is a 43.5 meter super yacht that can accommodate up to 10 guests and 7 crew members.

The vessel is powered by three MTU diesel engines that deliver 10,440 hp together, propelling the Octopussy forward at a cruising speed of 25 knots and a top speed of 53.2 knots.

It was on display at multiple boat shows around the world, and it changed owners for the last time in 2021. The naval architecture was done by Mulder Design, the exterior by Gerhard Gilgenast, and the interior by Art Line and Joachim Kinder Yacht Design.

Inside, it comes with 5 posh and extremely comfortable guest cabins, 1 master, 1 twin, and 3 double.

 • 14. Daloli – 54 knots

Daloli Yacht

The Daloli, also known as Pandion, built by Heesen Yachts, is a 36.5 vessel that enters the category of super yachts and impresses with a top speed of 54 knots, the equivalent of just over 62 mph.

The ship has a crew capacity of 6 and can host up to 8 passengers. There’s four cabins in total on its three decks, and the sheer beauty of its design can be seen both inside and on the outside.

It’s a real beauty, and a fast one as well.

 • 13. Why Not U – 55 knots

Why Not U

Originally named Nobody, the Why Not U was designed in 2001 by Overmarine as a deluxe super yacht that’s capable of getting his 9 guests and 3 crew to their next dream destination with a top speed of 55 knots. The power comes from a setup of Vericor TF40 gas turbine engines.

When it comes to living on it, it offers an impressive range of amenities on its teak decks. There’s several dining spots, entertainment and lounge rooms, sun bathing areas, and plenty more to be had on board of this stunning super yacht.

 • 12. Ermis² – 57 knots

Ermis² Yacht

The 37.5 meter super yacht Ermis², manufactured from special materials by the New Zealand shipyard McMullen & Wing, is among the fastest vessels out there, capable of a top speed of 57 knots, which is just a little over 65 mph.

The ship came out in 2007, but is still among the most innovative yachts in the world given the mix of composite materials, aerospace grade carbon fiber and titanium for its lightweight body.

That low weight, combined with the 10,944 hp outputted by the three MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines, allow this stunning yacht to reach that max speed of 57 knots.

 • 11. Chato – 57 knots

Chato Yacht

Chato is another small sized and powerful super yacht. It was built in 1986 by Baglietto from aluminium and was equipped with twin MTU 16V 396 TB94 diesel engines, which push it to a cruise speed of 35 knots and a max speed of 57 knots.

Chato is only 25.79 meters long, and that helps with a lower weight and a smaller profile under the surface of the water.

 • 10. Azimut Atlantic Challenger – 60 knots

Azimut Atlantic Challenger

The Azimut Atlantic Challenger strays away from the usual design of luxury yachts, but that only because it was built for a very different purpose, which was to win the Blue Riband award, an unofficial accolade given to a ship for making the fastest transatlantic crossing.

Unfortunately, the Azimut Atlantic Challenger failed to win, but it remained one of the fastest super yachts in the world, currently holding the 10th position, with a top speed of 60 knots.

It was built in 1988 by the Italian shipyard Benetti, with the exterior designed by Pininfarina. It’s a 26.82 meter aluminum monohull vessel and is powered by four CRM diesel engines, capable of outputting a combined 7,400 hp.

 • 9. Jet Ruban Bleu – 60 knots

Jet Ruban Bleu Yacht

The French built Jet Ruban Bleu is on par with the Azimut Atlantic Challenger and two other super yachts, at least when it comes to the top speed. They can all do 60 knots.

Jet Ruban Bleu is 25 meter long, was designed by Gilles Ollier and Coste Design & Partners and created by Multiplast. It was outfitted with a single MTU engine capable of 3,500 hp alone.

 • 8. Oci Ciornie – 60 Knots

Oci Ciornie Yacht

Oci Ciornie was a super yacht project that was realized by American shipyard Palmer Johnson, the Dutch Vripack, and the well known naval architect Don Shead in 1998.

The vessel features an aluminum hull, and uses two 1,800 hp MTU 16V 2000 M90 engines, a 4,600 hp AVCO Lycoming gas turbine, plus Arneson surface drives. This combination propels the Oci Ciornie with a top speed of 60 knots.

The ship is able to carry up to eight guests in a master suite, a double cabin, and a twin room. There’s a nice and streamlined deck that features a superb saloon and outside areas for relaxation, while the interior takes inspiration from aircraft designs.

 • 7. Brave Challenger – 60 Knots

Brave Challenger Yacht

With the same 60 knot top speed of the above ships, the Brave Challenger is to be lauded, since it’s much older, being built back in 1960. The project was completed by Vosper Ltd in Portsmouth, United Kingdom, with the intention of becoming a Brave Class fast patrol boat. It was only later that the ship was converted for private use.

The Brave Challenger is powered by three Rolls-Royce Proteus gas turbines, which output a total of 13,500 hp, which combined with the only 31 meter length and lower weight, can push the boat to the top speed of 60 knots.

 • 6. Kereon – 62.3 Knots

Kereon Yacht

The Italian yard AB Yachts, the one behind Seafire above at number 16, built in 2004 one of the fastest super yachts in the world, the Kereon. It’s capable of hitting a top speed of 62.3 knots, and that thanks to the three CRM diesel engines that produce a good 6,300 hp.

Since the total power is so low in comparison to others on this list, it makes sense that a shorter length of 27 meters and a performant hull design are at play to aid in reaching those speeds.

The ship has a very sporty aesthetic, all metallic silver, and can cruise at 50 knots for about 900 miles.

 • 5. Gentry Eagle – 63.5 knots

Gentry Eagle Yacht

Gentry Eagle was a special project done by Vosper Thornycroft in 1988 for the legendary Tom Gentry, who achieved almost everything he could achieve in terms of powerboat speed records during his lifetime, including the coveted Blue Riband. The vessel, capable of 63.5 knots, helped him win the Blue Riband in 1989, with a record time of 62 hours and 7 minutes.

Gentry Eagle’s design was done by Grant Robinson and Peter Birkett, with the interior by Robin Rose. In 1992, the ship became a private super yacht.

 • 4. Galeocerdo – 65 Knots

Galeocerdo Yacht

Galeocerdo is a very futuristic looking ship, with sleek lines and a hull designed to maintain high speeds in rough sea conditions. It measures 36 meters in length, and is capable of hitting 65 knots.

The vessel was built in 2003 in Italy, by Rodriguez Yachts and is powered by three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, each tied to a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet. The total power output rises to a whooping 16,800 hp.

 • 3. Destriero – 66 knots

Destriero Yacht

Destriero was launched back in 1991 by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri. It has a length of 68.18 meters and features a design made by Pininfarina and Donald Blount. This ship was again built with the sole purpose of winning the Blue Riband by breaking the old record of crossing the Atlantic.

She did it in 1992, after it crossed the ocean twice without refueling, setting a new record of 58 hours, 34 minutes, and 5 seconds. but the Blue Riband award was denied for her, since it’s awarded only to passenger vessels and not private yachts.

What allowed Destriero to set a new record was the power of 54,000 hp, given by the Codag engine and the three GE Aviation LM1600 gas turbines, pushing the ship to a max speed of 66 knots, or 76 mph.

 • 2. World Is Not Enough – 67 Knots

World Is Not Enough yacht

The Dutch superyacht World Is Not Enough, built in 2004 by Millenium Super Yachts, comes second place with a top speed of 67 knots. The vessel is powered by two Paxman diesel engines and two Lycoming gas turbines, which give an output of 20,600 hp, and a good 3800 nautical miles cruising range at a cruising speed of 10 knots.

With its 42.4 meters of luxury and beauty, World Is Not Enough can accommodate up to 10 guests and 7 crew members in five extravagant cabins, offering plenty of comfort and areas for relaxation. The vessel features formal dining spaces, indoor bar, and al fresco dining and lounge areas on all decks, for the ultimate pleasure away from civilization.

 • 1. Foners – 70.1 knots

Foners Yacht

The Foners is currently the fastest super yacht in the world, with a 70.1 knots top speed, keeping the first spot since its delivery back in 2000. The power behind its top speed comes from two MAN engines and three Rolls Royce gas turbines, combining together to output a whooping 21,380 hp.

Her cruising speed is 12 knots, and allows her to reach a range of 1,800 nautical miles.

But of course speed isn’t everything here, as the eye is impressed a lot when stepping on board. Built by the Spanish shipyard Izar, Foners comes with splendid interiors, formal dining rooms, and plenty of space on the decks for al fresco dining. Its 6 crew and up to 8 guests can be accommodated on board, in luxurious cabins.

These are the fastest super yachts in the world, a competition that keeps on going, dominated for the last two decades by the Spanish vessel Foners.

As technology progresses, it will be interesting to see how it holds up against newer yachts.

With the 80, the designer is not exactly throwing sustainability to the winds—but he’s not embracing it, either. Any yacht with 6,000 hp is clearly not eco-friendly. But, counters Acampora, the Bolide (Italian for “fireball”) is more sustainable than traditional motoryachts in its class. The 80 consumes half the fuel at 50 knots that a similar-sized flybridge would use running at 25 knots. “You get from point A to point B in half the time, using half the fuel,” he tells Robb Report during a tour at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Calling the 80 the “culmination” of his career as a designer, Acampora penned hull number one for an experienced client who wanted a new definition of high performance. He got it.

world's fastest superyacht

The 80 breathes speed all across its long, slender profile, from the steps in the hull to the air scoops along the side, to the three massive surface-piercing propellers at the stern. The boat is powered by triple 2,000 hp MAN diesels that are staggered to fit in the engine room. But they deliver a ridiculous top end, making it “the fastest yacht in the world,” according to the designer. So much so that it’s the first in what will be an even more ridiculously named category, the Hyper Muscle Yacht, or HMY. Bolide has four other models in design to fill in the gaps.

This Bolide isn’t for everyone—and, in fact, is really for one person—but anyone who stepped on board at Monaco, much less got to do a sea trial, had to admit it was very cool, even if they didn’t like the concept. It stood out among the vanilla superyachts at Monaco.

To gain the low weight but retain the structural integrity needed for churning through the ocean at high speed, the 80 is built of carbon-fiber composites. Across the exterior, Acampora also made good use of the exposed carbon to give it a space-age look. The black-nickel topsides work well with the gray cockpit, which is offset by burnt-sienna upholstery.

The styling, from the three center steps at the stern to a large u-shaped seating area for 12, emphasizes curves and fluidity. The hardtop also undulates with an aerodynamic shape matching the profile.

Yacht Bolide 80 Captain's station.

The helm is also in keeping with the rest of the boat, featuring an Alcantara F-1 steering wheel, a single, 32-inch electronics console panel, and three tall seats so the driver and passengers will feel like they’re cocooned in at those blistering speeds.

But the 80’s real surprise is the interior by Loro Piana, a dark, elegant man cave with leather trim nearly everywhere, interspersed with carbon fiber. It’s no surprise that the two-stateroom layout (it also comes in three cabins) is unusual, customized for the owner.

Acampora refers to it as the owner’s “suite.” It includes a small guest cabin to port, large center salon in the center and main suite up front.

Yacht Bolide 80 pullman's dresser

The salon is much larger than expected, with surprising headroom, skylights, and lounges on either side. Leather is everywhere, from the couches to the stylized, pullman-style drawers and cabinets, to the curved ceilings.

Yacht Bolide 80 Main Salon.

Forward is what Acampora calls the “vestibule,” a small corridor with storage that leads to the main suite. This area is much brighter up front, with a monochromatic white bed and walls, offset by a bright, mustard-colored leather dresser.

The ensuite and shower return to the darker theme, with a black marble sink with stylized (black, of course) handles. The black toilet and bidet are, naturally, carbon fiber. Even items like the fire extinguishers are noteworthy since they’re finished in mirror-polished stainless steel, and the leather straps on the dresser drawers replace latches to prevent rattling.

Yacht Bolide 80 Sink.

It’d be easy to get lost in the wonderland interior, but the Bolide 80 is still, at heart, a fast yacht. “Too many vessels these days focus on style and aesthetics,” says Acampora. “We’re really focused on performance.”

The Bolide 80 will come in a limited-edition series of 10 customized boats, costing about $10 million.

The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts

In the realm of luxury yachts, where luxury knows no bounds, there exists a class of vessels that stands apart – vessels that blend luxurious living with exhilarating speed. Welcome to our exploration of “The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts.” In this exhilarating journey across the high seas, we unveil the marvels of modern engineering and design, showcasing a selected group of superyachts that defy convention with their remarkable velocity. From cutting-edge propulsion systems to breathtaking top speeds, join us as we delve into the world of high-performance yachting, where luxury knows how to pick up the pace.

Cutting-Edge Propulsion Technologies in World’s Fastest Superyachts

Conventional diesel engines.

Many superyachts, even the fastest ones, are powered by conventional diesel engines. These engines typically run on marine-grade diesel fuel. They use a system of pistons and crankshafts to convert the energy from diesel combustion into mechanical power, which turns the yacht’s propellers. These engines are reliable and fuel-efficient, providing the necessary power for cruising.

Gas Turbine Engines

Some high-performance yachts, especially military and custom-built vessels, use gas turbine engines. These engines are known for their exceptional power-to-weight ratio. They have the ability to provide a high amount of thrust, which results in impressive speeds. Gas turbine engines are often used in combination with other propulsion systems or in hybrid setups for improved efficiency.

Hybrid Propulsion Systems in Fastest Superyachts

In recent years, there has been a trend towards hybrid propulsion systems. They combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors and batteries. These systems offer greater flexibility, allowing yachts to operate in all-electric mode for silent and emission-free cruising at lower speeds, and then switch to diesel power for high-speed operation. Hybrid systems are more environmentally friendly and can improve fuel efficiency.

Waterjet propulsion is a technology commonly used in high-speed yachts. Waterjets draw water into the yacht and expel it at high velocity through a nozzle at the stern. This system provides excellent maneuverability, shallow draft capabilities, and reduced vibration, making it suitable for fast and agile yachts.

Pod propulsion systems, such as those manufactured by companies like Volvo Penta and Caterpillar, involve the use of pods (outdrive units) that are mounted below the yacht’s hull. These pods can rotate, providing thrust in various directions, resulting in increased maneuverability and efficiency. They are often used in combination with diesel engines for both power and control.

Advanced Hull Designs

Beyond propulsion systems, the hull design of a yacht plays a crucial role in achieving high speeds. Yachts with planing hulls are designed to lift out of the water at higher speeds, reducing hydrodynamic drag and allowing for increased velocity.

Crafting the Perfect Propulsion Strategy for Fastest Superyachts

The selection of a propulsion system for a superyacht is a multifaceted decision that hinges on several critical factors, including the vessel’s size, intended purpose, and the preferences of its owner. Each propulsion method comes with its unique set of advantages and trade-offs, making it crucial to tailor the choice to suit the yacht’s specific requirements. Moreover, it’s not uncommon to witness a synergy of multiple propulsion systems within a single yacht, a testament to the industry’s dedication to optimizing both performance and efficiency. The pursuit of the perfect balance between speed, range, maneuverability, and environmental impact underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation inherent in the design and engineering of these high-speed marvels.

The Top Five Fastest Yachts in the World

By Jenna Mehdi

We took a look at the top five fastest superyachts and luxury yachts on the water today. Ranging from speeds of 62 Knots up to a whopping 70 Knots, these breakneck builds are sure to satisfy the cravings of the most insatiable adrenaline junkies...

1. World Is Not Enough - Millennium Superyachts - 70 Knots The fastest yacht in the world reaches a record-breaking top speed of around 70 knots. The Milennium 140 World Is Not Enough has retained the title of the world’s fastest yacht since she was delivered in 2004 to one of the most public superyacht owners in the world, John Staluppi. Incredibly for a superyacht of this size, World Is Not Enough is a fully fledged and outfitted superyacht at 42.4m, complete with advanced audio-visual systems and accommodation for 10 guests in 5 luxurious cabins.

The superyacht achieves her racing speeds by virtue of an all-aluminium build, V-shaped hull, and two 18VP185 Paxman Diesel engines providing 5300 hp each combined with twin Lycoming TF40 turbine jet engines - able to generate a total power of 20.000 HP. The result is an extremely streamlined, exhilarating and comfortable feel as the yacht cuts through the water, offering minimal noise levels and vibration underway.

2. Foners - Astilleros Bazan - 70 Knots In joint first place at a similar top speed of roughly 70 knots is the 41.5m Foners (ex Fortuna). Boasting a colourful and intrepid history, Foners was built in 2000 by Spain’s Astilleros Bazan yard for then-Spanish King Juan Carlos I as a gift by businessmen in the Balearic Islands, and has since been renounced by the royal family in a display of austerity. Powered by two 1280 HP MAN engines and three Rolls Royce 6,700 HP gas turbines driving three KaMeWa water jets, Foners was the fastest superyacht in the world upon delivery until World Is Not Enough matched her high-octane abilities in 2004.

3. Galeocerdo - Wally Yachts - 65 Knots Galeocerdo (118 Wallypower) is the 36m ultra light carbon fiber boat built for Luca Bassani, founder of Italian shipyard Wally Yachts. The fascinating design of the boat, composed of geometric shapes, extensive use of glass, a simple and clean interior layout and sage colours, gives her an impressively futuristic character despite having been delivered in 2002. But this is not the only appeal of the iconic yacht; at top speeds of 65 knots, Galeocerdo can shift from luxury superyacht to speed boat in a matter of moments, with minimal noise or vibrations. Galeocerdo is powered by three DDC TF50 gas Turbines and two Cummins 370 horsepower engines; a combination quite common on smaller warships but not so on super yachts. She can achieve a range of 380 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 60 knots or 1,500 nautical miles at nine knots.

4. Gentry Eagle - Vosper Thornycroft - 63 Knots Gentry Eagle was delivered in 1988 by Vosper Thornycroft, built for American racer Tom Gentry in an attempt to break the record for fastest Atlantic crossing (held at the time by Virgin’s Richard Branson). The 35.6m yacht was damaged on the first crossing, and returned a year later to steal Branson’s title, making a journey time of just over 62 hours. Revamped in perfume mogul Thierry Mugler’s Couture Collection a few years ago, Gentry Eagle retains a timeless and iconic appeal for its proud history, iconic design and lightning speeds. The speedy superyacht is powered by two Lycoming TF40 Engines reaching a combined horsepower of almost 24,000.

5. Kereon - AB Yachts - 62.3 Knots Kereon, the 27m luxury yacht delivered in 2005 by AB Yachts in Italy to industry acclaim. A masterpiece of Italian craftsmanship and performance, Kereon’ s streamlined profile is made up of carbon and kevlar allowing for a lightweight and high-speed structure. Not much is known about Kereon , other than that she is powered by twin 20KW Kohler engines and accommodates for six guests comfortably in three staterooms.

Superyacht aficionados and lovers of fast yachts in 2020 may notice that the heyday for high speed luxury yacht deliveries seemed to reach its peak in the early to mid noughties. Is fast yacht build a thing of the past? And if not, who will be next to break the long-held record?

Articles What Makes The BOLIDE 80 The Fastest Yacht In The World?

An exclusive interview with BOLIDE 80 chief designer, Brunello Acampora

In this age of ever-larger superyachts, it’s hard to turn heads in the Mediterranean , Miami , and other yachting hot spots. But this summer, after making its global debut at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show , it is fair to say the BOLIDE 80 caused quite the stir.

Cutting a slender figure as she stood proud above the pontoon, with her elongated prow, aft set cockpit, rolled sheer, and sloping stern, she is without doubt supermodel material.

The product of Bolide Yachts and Victory Marine , her svelte lines and torpedo-shaped body pay tribute to the cigarette racers of bygone eras, albeit on a larger, and far more contemporary scale. However, there is a lot more to this stunning yacht than good looks.

Built with the focus of being the fastest superyacht in the world without compromising on luxury, after initial sea trials the BOLIDE 80 has comfortably taken the mantle as the fastest yacht in the world, having reached a staggering 76 knots.

Elevating the BOLIDE 80 beyond the reach of social envy and into a class of its own, this achievement has positioned this stunning yacht as a standard by which to be measured. Raising the bar for the entire industry, it is the fastest yacht money can buy, with an “elevated” superyacht stance.

However, getting to this point was no small feat. To find out more about the inspiration behind the creation of BOLIDE 80, as well as the advanced technology and cutting-edge design techniques employed in the production phase, we sat down with Bolide Yachts chief designer, Brunello Acampora.

BOLIDE Design Drawing

THE INSPIRATION: A WINNING HAND

When posed with the question of what inspired the creation of the BOLIDE 80; Brunello’s response was one of confidence in his team. “Without trying to be presumptuous, due to our experience in the field, we only accepted the challenge because we knew we could do it.”

However, the BOLIDE 80 is not merely a testament to technical prowess; it is a celebration of speed, akin to the Italian love affair with fast cars.

In his response to the question of his inspiration, Brunello intricately weaved a narrative of historical admiration for speed, drawing parallels with British racing cars, the Spitfire, Sir Malcom Campbell’s Bluebird, and Italy’s ‘little red car’.

“BOLIDE 80 is a contemporary tribute to a rich heritage of pushing the limits, infused with a timeless charm you see in all icons of speed.”

BOLIDE 80 aerial image

Brunello emphasised the yacht’s technical mastery in each fundamental design element, likening it to a winning poker hand. Yet, beyond technical excellence, lies a quest for something more profound. “The BOLIDE 80 is not just about achieving staggering speeds; it is about transcending the norm and infusing speed with beauty and meaning, creating a mind-blowing experience from the moment you lay eyes on it.”

In this sense, the world’s fastest yacht is closer in spirit to a private jet than any other yacht. While most power boats capable of such speeds require a skilled pilot with a considerable slice of bravery to push the speed, BOLIDE 80’s passengers can sip Dom Pérignon in complete luxury, while the incredible machine transporting them goes about doing the extraordinary. Destined to be experienced by the very few, yet admired by the many, BOLIDE 80 stands as an incredible display of what is possible today.

MATERIAL OF THE MILLENNIUM

The way in which the BOLIDE’s body is constructed also deserves comment. The use of carbon fibre lends its inimitable sleek silhouette and overwhelmingly sinuous lines to Bolide’s craftsmen.

An organic surfacing, as well as the potent aft-cockpit cigarette racer profile was adopted for BOLIDE, with several styling cues added. This concoction of engineering-driven, advanced design – skilfully and unintrusively intertwined with luscious, opulent living spaces exquisitely finished by Loro Piana affords the BOLIDE 80 an exalted presence.

This sublime sleekness ought to be at odds with its sheer size, yet isn’t, and this visual alchemy is at the root of the truly unique formula that has made this yacht an archetype of Italian yacht design elegance. It is a design of uncompromising performance and unadulterated luxury combined in a seemingly impossible way.

Setting a new precedent in yacht design that subsequent models like the 170 will follow, with regards to the treatment of surfaces, both the exterior and interior design are unquestionably beautiful; but were not solely shaped by aesthetic criteria.

world's fastest superyacht

Engineering requirements were of course at the forefront of the design process. The body is entirely made of carbon fibre — dubbed by Brunello as “the material of the millennium” — rather than employing the traditional GRP construction with heavy strengthening spas integrated into the hull.

Cutting-edge digital technologies including computational fluid dynamics and artificial intelligence were also employed and come together to optimise performance and design, ensuring that the BOLIDE 80 is not just fast, but beautifully fast.

world's fastest superyacht

Brunello stresses that “BOLIDE 80 is crafted with the user experience at its core. The yacht is designed to let its occupants enjoy the thrill of cruising at 55 knots, all while in safety and comfort, free from the fear that often accompanies extreme speeds on the water.”

A hydrodynamically optimised, multi-stepped hull, is paired with innovative semi-foiling technology. Namely, twin independent rudders that not only provide lift at slow speeds but also improve high speed handling stability, only enhancing the BOLIDE’s incredible performance.

An innovation Brunello designed himself for the 244 mph record breaking power boat – Spirit of Qatar, he took his learnings from that project to develop the unique, and simply brilliant steering system of BOLIDE. Simultaneously delivering astonishing top speeds and efficient cruising, she will plane at just 12 knots, cruise at a cool 55, and wide open will climb well past the 70-knot mark.

Combining three-2000 horsepower MAN engines, linked to three surface piercing propellers via a T Drive, and flexible trim tabs that bend rather than hinge to reduce drag, the BOLIDE 80’s sleek appearance is no masquerade, but backed up by advanced design and superior performance, reinforcing its status as the link between outright speed and on-the-water luxury.

“This is speed enjoyed in its purest form, a true testament to the skill and passion of the Bolide Yachts team.”

THE BOLIDE LEGACY: A FUTURE CLASSIC

As dedicated as they are talented, the Bolide team have created an object of sheer desire, and as we delve deeper into the BOLIDE 80’s creation, it becomes evident that every detail has been crafted to engage every sense and emotion of its occupants.

The BOLIDE 80 is a creation that Acampora believes will become a classic in decades to come. On this very topic, Brunello was keen to point out the subtle aspects of this yacht that leave a lasting impression, emphasising “lighting is one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s arsenal and it can make a statement in a yacht’s interior like no other aspect. The sculptural lighting you see throughout BOLIDE amplifies textures and patterns to create interest and draw focus to specific elements of the design.

In a surprising twist, the conversation turned to scent, a sense not often associated with yachting but one that Acampora is keenly focused on. Born into a family of perfumiers and a skilled perfumer in his own right, Brunello has ensured that the BOLIDE 80 engages even the sense of smell.

“We truly tap into every human sense with BOLIDE,” Acampora noted, a statement that rings true as you discover the use of cedar wood throughout the interior, chosen for its lightweight strength and it’s beautiful, natural scent, ensuring that “even your linen shirts hung in the cedar-lined wardrobes will carry a natural perfume.”

bolide leather craftsman

As you step aboard the BOLIDE 80, you are not just stepping onto a yacht; you are embarking on an emotional journey. Every element, from the acceleration that presses you back into your seat, to the scent of fine leather and aromatic cedar wood, has been carefully considered and masterfully executed.

This is a yacht that engages every sense, creating a holistic and harmonious experience that stays with you long after you’ve disembarked. It is a testament to the thought, care, and passion that the team at Bolide Yachts has poured into creating the world’s fastest yacht, ensuring that the BOLIDE 80 stands as a beacon of luxury, speed, and emotional engagement on the water.

World’s fastest monohull: Malizia-Seaexplorer IMOCA 60

Yachting World

 • August 17, 2023

The IMOCA 60 Malizia-Seaexplorer is the world’s fastest monohull, having set a blistering 24-hour record of 641.08 nautical miles while competing in The Ocean Race transatlantic leg

world's fastest superyacht

Followers of the IMOCA 60 fleet will know that two names have dominated the class over the past two generations when it comes to design: VPLP and Verdier. So, it’s no surprise that all five of the IMOCAs competing in The Ocean Race come from those same drawing boards (and in the case of the oldest boat in the fleet, the 2015-launched Guyot Environnement, a VPLP/Verdier partnership).

Of the four designs, three are by Verdier – 11th Hour Racing Team , Holcim-PRB , and Biotherm. This leaves Boris Herrmann ’s Malizia-Seaexplorer as the sole latest generation VPLP IMOCA in the race, but the differences in its design concept run much deeper. Malizia-Seaexplorer was, uniquely among the fleet, designed from the outset for both the 2023 Ocean Race and the 2024 Vendée Globe . The result is a distinctively different looking IMOCA.

VPLP explains that the design differs markedly from previous iterations of IMOCA, particularly in the shape of the hull. Much of this was the result of lessons learned during the 2020 Vendée Globe . The main aim of the hull studies VPLP undertook was to optimise Malizia-Seaexplorer’s performance in the heavy seas of the Southern Ocean without compromising its ability to perform in the more moderate conditions expected on the Atlantic stages of both The Ocean Race and Vendée Globe.

German skipper Herrmann had made three laps of the planet before the Ocean Race start and had specific ideas he wanted to incorporate into the design. Malizia-Seaexplorer has noticeably full bow sections, a higher freeboard and more curved sheerline. Co-skipper Will Harris explained that the boat’s bow shape and volume are two of its key design features.

“The first 3.5m of the bow were cut off, in effect giving us a scow bow,” Harris said while showing me around the boat in the Newport stopover. “It means we’re less likely to catch the bow as we plough into the wave in front of us. And the added volume up front helps lift the boat back out of the water. You look at a boat like Biotherm, it has a bullet nose. Once it digs in a wave it’s hard to get it back out.

Extraordinary boats: the new radical PRB IMOCA 60

As if the new PRB IMOCA 60 were not eye-catching enough, the story behind it is truly remarkable. The reason…

“We really thought about this design for the Southern Ocean, and it really pays off in the heavy conditions. It might not be so good in other conditions, in lighter winds the extra volume means it’s heavier, but in the rough conditions it pays off for us.”

Among the Verdier designs, overall race leader Holcim-PRB seems the most similar in terms of bow shape, though it lacks the volume of Malizia. Not surprisingly, the two designs were clearly superior in the arduous 12,000-mile Southern Ocean Leg 3 of The Ocean Race. Holcim-PRB and Malizia-Seaexplorer were 1st and 2nd through the mid-leg scoring gate. Approaching the gate at longitude 143 East, Malizia-Seaexplorer overtook 11th Hour Racing Team in strong north-westerly winds of 20-25 knots to earn 2nd place.

11th Hour’s onboard reporter Amory Ross ruefully described Malizia’s superiority in the sea state as they went past: “After working our way through Biotherm it was Malizia’s turn to do the same to us this afternoon. They seem to be able to carry more sail and keep their bow up, presumably with the shape of their hull, and while we struggled in the waves to keep from nose diving, they were able to sail at the same speed but lower.

“We watched as they sailed down to us, around our bow, and then continued on in a more southerly direction.”

Malizia kept that pace up in heavy conditions on the approach to Cape Horn and rounded the iconic landmark ahead of Holcim-PRB.

Banana boat

Another design feature Harris credited to their success is the boat’s rocker, the curvature of the hull from bow to stern. Harris said that because the rocker rises up in the stern, it also aids the bow in staying out of the water.

“The rocker continues well into the back of the boat, so the whole boat is like a banana,” Harris said. “The idea behind the rocker rising in the stern is to help lift the bow up even more. By having the stern high we can stack more gear, people and equipment in the back of the boat so the bow comes out even more, so it’s less likely to dig into the waves. The tradeoff is it’s less efficient in marginal planing conditions, it’s a little harder to get on a plane just before foiling, but we feel it’s a very small difference.”

The added freeboard also has multiple benefits, including the boat’s ability to self-right. All IMOCAs must be able to self-right after passing 110° of heel angle. “The higher freeboard means more volume at the front. So, when the bow digs in a wave, there’s a lot of buoyancy to help lift it out of the water. Higher freeboard also means more volume for life onboard. And in the IMOCA rules, a high freeboard means more form stability so we can have a lighter ballast bulb for the 110° test,” Harris adds.

Foil changes

However, it’s Malizia’s foils that have proven to be an unexpected benefit – especially since they’re not the intended foils, but rather a spare set the team had to switch to after Malizia-Seaexplorer’s version one foils were damaged beyond repair before the race start.

The team’s original set suffered damage on the delivery from Guadeloupe at the end of the Route du Rhum to Alicante for the start of The Ocean Race. Harris said that they experienced some rough conditions on the passage and that when the boat nosedived the loads on the foils were counter to the designed loads. There’s a shaft inside the foils around which the carbon fibre is laid, but the carbon wasn’t strong enough to support the huge loads the foils undergo.

An ultrasound check revealed internal damage, and was followed by a frantic search for a replacement set – the team was fortunate to be able to use a set from designer Sam Manuard, similar to those built for Sam Davies’ new Initiatives Coeur.

“To be honest, it’s been a bit of a blessing,” Harris said. The original foils were L-shaped in profile, whereas the replacements are C-shaped. Harris says the biggest benefit is the way the foils regulate the boat’s motion through waves.

world's fastest superyacht

There are 54 separate control lines running into the enclosed cockpit. Photo: Antoine Auriol/Team Malizia

“The C-shaped foils are more polyvalent, they’re good in all conditions,” said Harris. “They’re more vertical in profile, which means there’s more righting moment, more of a daggerboard effect. And when the boat starts to lift out of the water the foil comes out in a natural way and helps stabilise the flight of the boat. It doesn’t leap as much. The L-foils are not as good at managing those leaps, you must play more with their extension. With the C-foils, if they’re extended a bit too much in a gust it’s OK. They allow the boat to lift over the wave and not jump so much that it ventilates.”

The C-shape foil versus L-shape played out dramatically on Leg 5 of The Ocean Race, when 11th Hour Racing Team, Holcim-PRB and Malizia-Seaexplorer all took turns blowing through the race and outright monohull 24-hour records (previously standing at 602 and 618 miles respectively, the latter set by the 100ft Comanche back in 2015). During what’s been dubbed the ‘North Atlantic Speed Sailing Seminar’ Malizia-Seaexplorer ended up with the top number, setting a new record of 641.13 miles in 24 hours on 26 May, having maintained a breathtaking average speed of 26.71 knots.

world's fastest superyacht

By IMOCA standards, Malizia’s living quarters are comfortable, with curtained bunks. Despite how snugly the crew are wedged in, Rosalind Kuiper was thrown from her bunk and suffered a head injury in Leg 3, due to the foiling IMOCA’s extreme motion in rough seas. Photo: Antoine Auriol/Team Malizia

“We had exceptional conditions with a flat sea, the wind steady from the right direction, the right angle for such a long time,” said Herrmann.

“No sail changes – actually, we took a reef in and out, so we slowed down for these two moments, but apart from that nothing slowed us down for a longer time. Sometimes, the waves got a little bit shorter and we’d slow down to 18 knots and get a bit stuck in the sea. But most of the time the boat would pass the sea perfectly and fly at 27-34 knots, it felt really relaxed.”

Bulletproof IMOCA 60

Regardless of the foil shape, Malizia-Seaexplorer is a beast of a boat. Harris noted that the boat has 30% more structure than the other IMOCAs. The hull is solid carbon fibre, no foam core, up to 16 layers thick in some places. The trend among the IMOCA class is to eliminate the foam cores and use a monolithic construction process that eliminates the possibility of core failure. Given the 30-knot speeds these boats are capable of, their skippers must have confidence that the machine will not break.

“This is a very good boat for the Vendée Globe, it is very good for the overall campaign,” said Herrmann. “I don’t foresee broken stringers or a delamination after a cold front. We have a monolithic very strong hull, a little heavier but when we are up on the foils we perform very much like the pack.

“We are seeing sensational performances downwind and upwind, a few knots quicker than the old boat, the ergonomics are so much better than the old boat. There are so many good things about this boat.”

The world's largest superyacht Azzam

10 facts about Lürssen's 180m superyacht Azzam

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Mario Pedol, founder of Nauta Design, gives Elaine Bunting the inside view on what it was like working on one of the world’s biggest private boats.

For six years from her launch in April 2013, the superyacht Azzam stood as the world’s largest private yacht. At 180m overall, Azzam was eclipsed only in 2019 when the research and expedition vessel REV Ocean was unveiled – and then by only three metres.

To Azzam’ s owner – and exterior designer Nauta Design – size was never the ultimate goal. Instead, the objective was to create a sleek vessel with elegant, timeless lines. Originally, the superyacht was designed to be 145 metres, but in the process of optimisation it grew, and to this day, Mario Pedol, founder of Nauta Design, takes it as a great compliment when admirers say the yacht looks smaller than her size.

Nauta, famed as the studio behind some of the most graceful sailing yachts afloat, was asked to create an exterior design for Azzam . “There was already a GA [general arrangement plan of the interior layout] but they were missing the exterior design, and that was quite something,” says Pedol.

Previously, Nauta’s largest project had been 80 metre Project Light , a modern yet graceful motor yacht that drew on sailing yacht aesthetics and blended the boundaries between outdoor and indoor living. Azzam was to be different in style and intent, but Nauta was brought in to shape how the vessel would look.

“It was a challenging brief,” says Pedol. “The ship – and actually it is a ship – was due to reach 30+ knots. So one of the fundamental characteristics was the speed, quite unusual for this size, and I wanted to give a sense of that speed even in the design. Fortunately enough, the requirement of interior volume was not excessive for the length, so it did allow us to design a balanced and elegant yacht with good proportions. I’ve had many comments that, from some distance, you can’t tell she is a 180 metre yacht.”

The yacht accommodates a large, open plan main saloon, accommodation for 36 guests and up to 80 crew, complex ‘dual mode’ engine systems and the fuel required, despite having a comparatively shallow draught of just 4.3 metres.

The challenging design and engineering accounted for around a third of the four-year construction schedule, while arriving at the long, lean shape was in itself a challenge, needing detailed Finite Element Analysis to give the required longitudinal strength.

The interior style remains a closely guarded secret, but heritage was of prime importance. French designer Christophe Leoni , who had previously worked on some of the owner’s residences and palaces, brought similar styles on board, including a wealth of wood furniture intricately veneered with mother of pearl marquetry.

One of Pedol’s most vivid memories is of Azzam ’s first sea trial, when the builders, designers and engineers could finally appreciate the results of their work and calculations. “We boarded at midnight because the Lürssen yard is 60 miles upriver from the sea, and we spent the night at three knots,” he says. “At 07:00 in the morning the project manager called me and said: ‘Come and see.’ It turned out we were already travelling at 32 knots, but it didn’t feel like it. The four waterjets created a very high wake, and [to see the yacht in action], it was a very emotional moment. It was just spectacular…”

10 facts about the superyacht Azzam

1. Azzam was never conceived as the world’s largest superyacht

The design was to be high speed and accommodate a certain interior plan and number of guests, but it was originally envisaged as 145 metres overall. As the need to optimise the structure, and create space for complex engine systems, fuel and tenders developed, together with an elegant exterior sporting a long, sweeping bow and swept back stern, the design grew by another 35 metres to become a recordbreaker.

2. It took more than 4,000 people to build

Rightly thought of as a gigayacht, Azzam took four years to build at German shipyard Lürssen and is said to have cost more than US$500m. Some 4,000 people were involved in the build over four years, clocking up six million man-hours before her launch in April 2013. The builders calculated that had the yacht been built by one person, work would have had to start in 1737BC.

3. Azzam is one of the world’s fastest superyachts

The brief for Azzam was for a vessel that could travel as fast as possible to the owner’s private island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, and she can cover the journey in a matter of hours at her top speed of 33 knots.

4. Azzam is as fast as a Navy frigate and uses similar technology

Top speed is produced by two gas turbine engines and 2 x MTU diesel engines driving two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters. Altogether they produce 97,000hp and consume 13 tonnes of fuel per hour at top speed.

5. There is a long range mode as well as a ‘sprint mode’

Azzam also has two conventional diesel engines for longer distance voyaging and extended range. Two 9,000kW MTU engines produce a speed of 18 knots over long distances – she could comfortably cross the Atlantic without refuelling.

6. You can practice golf on board

Guests can stay fit by using the onboard gym, pool or practising their swing in a special ‘golf training room’.

7. Over 100 people can live aboard

Azzam accommodates up to 36 guests in supreme comfort, and to look after them there is a crew of between 70 and 80 people.

8. There is a huge open plan main saloon

The large open plan main saloon measures 29 metres long by 18 metres, with no pillars to obstruct the views inside, and it is flanked by full height windows for an expansive view outside. “It was quite a challenge to make this space with no pillars,” observes Mario Pedol, adding that the beams on the ceiling had to be 1 metre in width. Making sure the huge windows were fully stormproof meant the glass had to be specially engineered in Italy and it is over 7cm thick.

9. The interior boasts a wealth of mother of pearl

The furniture on board features intricate marquetry in mother of pearl – such a wealth that it equates to a year’s worth of worldwide production

10. The chandelier doesn’t rattle

A huge amount of work was put into ensuring that the noise and vibration levels of Azzam were very low, even at full speed. Designers and engineers had to ensure the chandelier in the main salon didn’t tinkle underway. “It was difficult to know in advance how this would behave, but it was tested in every possible way with sophisticated software and set up challenging targets and it was not a problem,” says Mario Pedol.

…And the Fastest Superyacht of 2024 is…

Launched 2023, last year Bolide 80 broke the 23 year old speed record for Superyachts in her very first attempt.

Using 6000 HP and reaching incredible 76 knots (140.7 km/h) Bolide 80 is now the fastest Superyacht on the planet.

This New Superyacht Will Be One of the World’s Fastest

By Katherine McLaughlin

Rendering of a superyacht sailing along a city coastline

Depending on who you ask, bigger may not always mean better, but in the world of superyacht designs , it does usually mean slower. However, this may soon change with Vanquish’s VQ115 Veloce , which the company has promised will be one of the fastest superyachts in the world more than 30 meters (about 98.5 feet) long.

Rendering of an exterior deck on a superyacht

The VQ115 is designed for entertaining.

Commissioned from the Dutch luxury yacht company by a repeat client, the VQ115 reaches an impressive 51 knots, which is a little under 59 miles per hour, and spans 35 meters or 114.8 feet. The 32-seat, three-deck powerboat is set to be delivered to its owner in North America later this year.

To power the nearly 100-ton boat, Vanquish plans to install three MTU Rolls-Royce 2600s engines that surface drives will back up. When running on the two engines, the vessel will have upwards of a 500-nautical-mile range in addition to an extra fuel tank, which can be used for cruising at 15 knots.

Rendering of the interior of a superyacht. White couches with blue accents

The yacht has a spacious saloon that leads to an outdoor deck.

Rendering of a jacuzzi on the deck of superyacht

A jacuzzi makes it easy to enjoy the water without getting into the ocean.

The Vanquish team tapped the expertise of Studio Delta, a naval architecture firm, to design the yacht’s hull to minimize drag and increase efficiency when pacing at top speeds. The rest of the exterior, designed by Guido de Groot, is similarly sleek and modern and made from aluminum.

On board, there will be no shortage of entertainment options. Two smaller Vanquish watercrafts, the VQ16 and VQ11, will respectively be housed on a tender bay and second starboard garage. A live bait tank, bar, saltwater jacuzzi, office space, cinema room, and multiple outdoor lounging and dining area are also part of the design.

Rendering of cabin with a queen bed on a superyacht

Cabin space was less of a priority as the client wanted more room for socialization.

Despite its monstrous size, the VQ115 notably lacks cabin space—there are only three sleeping rooms. However, this isn’t an oversight, rather the client’s specific desire for a vessel designed for entertaining and interaction. At its size, the superyacht is sure to deliver on that front in a large way.

Ordered by and developed in tandem with a repeat client, the first VQ115 Veloce will roar along at a blistering 50+ knots and break records in the process.

Having had huge fun on his current Vanquish, the client was fully aware of our capacity for customisation. He also loves sparring with Vanquish founder Tom Steentjes, who is famed for his no-nonsense, non-traditional approach. This launch model for the VQ115 Veloce line is therefore the result of some serious brainstorming sessions about a remarkable tri-deck powerboat that will allow large groups of people to be entertained, enjoy extended stays on board and tap into a wide range of watersports.

Evolving ideas While the initial discussions were based on design concepts for a VQ90, the talks soon evolved as the owner added an extra cabin, a dedicated dining area on the lower deck and two garages. The resulting 35-metre motoryacht has more of everything that makes Vanquish powerboats unique in the market while staying totally in tune with the brand DNA.

That also means no compromises in terms of speed, with the installation of the largest engines possible – a trio of MTU-Rolls-Royce 2650s. Backed up by surface drives, this setup will power the VQ115 Veloce to an exceptional speed of 50+ knots. And she will also quite possibly be the fastest aluminium yacht over 30 metres with ‘normal’ diesel engines – i.e. non-turbine-driven – built to date.

world's fastest superyacht

Design challenges While all our VQs are famously fast, this combination of length and knots posed such an extreme challenge that the entire design trajectory revolved around this issue. Studio Delta in the Netherlands was called in for the naval architecture of a hull that features deflectors in the bottom shell to direct the spray aft. The result is optimal comfort and performance levels and a significant efficiency increase at top speeds.

Exterior designer Guido de Groot and his team had a relatively narrow hull on which to base their design. The engines will be placed in a trapezium shape with the middle engine forward. Two gyro stabilisers will enable the retention of another typical Vanquish characteristic – genuine comfort at all speeds – on this smart synthesis of a race boat and luxury yacht. An impressive range of up to 600 nm will be possible when running on one or two engines, with an extra fuel tank available for cruising at lower speeds.

This is entertainment Despite the phenomenal propulsion package, lots of space remains aft for a large tender bay that will house a VQ16. This mighty craft will be launched by a dedicated tender system, while a multifunctional hydraulic platform will ensure easy access to and from the water via a passerelle and swimming ladder. Another tender in the form of a VQ11 waterscooter will be housed in a second garage on the starboard side. This area will double as a leisure playground with a live bait tank, paddleboards, sea bobs and other toys. A hydraulic ladder will make diving a breeze.

Outdoor entertainment is a major factor in all areas of the yacht; while this is the norm on every Vanquish, the theme is being literally and figuratively taken to new lengths on the VQ115. The expansive foredeck, for instance, has a large seating area for lounging and dining, plus the option to lift up the sun beds and create a saltwater jacuzzi. There is a wealth of relaxation options on the aft deck too while the flybridge has a dedicated sunbathing area as well as its own helm station

Instantly recognisable

The flybridge has been superbly integrated within a distinctive exterior profile, part of a pure design with clean lines and that sexy, elegant, instantly recognisable Vanquish look. Those sharing space on the water with this powerhouse will certainly be glad of the advance visual notice as the negative bow heads their way.

The interior features a futuristic style to match the exterior design, with a casual groove, emblematic Vanquish details and 45-degree treatments. A smart layout makes optimum use of the enlarged space available. The main deck saloon will be fully tailored to the owner’s wishes with movable furniture to allow flexibility of occasion and time of day. Office space is included for when work calls, there is a neat pantry with its own cocktail bar, plus a day head to keep the lower deck private. Stairs rise to the sport flybridge above while the aft door opens fully to create a unified space with the aft deck: matching floors will ensure continuity between the outdoor and indoor spaces.

Vanquish VQ115: World's fastest aluminium superyacht

The lower deck features a more extensive galley and a U-shaped seating/dining area in a country kitchen style. Accommodations include a full-beam master suite, a VIP and a guest cabin, all with their own bathrooms. A dedicated media room includes a large television, a high-end sound system plus two Pullmans that bring the potential sleeping capacity to eight. There are also berths for four crew members.

In production

This potentially record-breaking powerboat is due to be delivered in the Hamptons in 2022.

Meanwhile, talks are underway for further models in this striking new line with other clients seeking to enjoy the same amount of interior space. In addition to customising the interior and exterior facilities to their personal preferences, owners who appreciate the design but prefer not to go so extremely fast can adapt their engine configuration accordingly.

The Top Five Fastest Yachts in The World

Ranging from speeds of 62 Knots up to a whopping 70 Knots, these breakneck builds are sure to satisfy the cravings of the most insatiable of adrenaline junkies…

1. WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH – Millennium Superyachts – 70 Knots

world's fastest superyacht

The fastest yacht in the world reaches a record-breaking top speed of around 70 knots. The Milennium 140 World Is Not Enough has retained the title of the world’s fastest yacht since she was delivered in 2004 to her owner and one of the most public superyacht owners in the world, John Staluppi. Incredibly for a superyacht of this size, World Is Not Enough is a fully fledged and superyacht at 42.4m, complete with advanced audio-visual systems and accommodation for 10 guests in 5 luxurious cabins.

The superyacht achieves its racing speeds by virtue of an all-aluminium build, V-shaped hull, and two 18VP185 Paxman Diesel engines providing 5300 hp each combined with twin Lycoming TF40 turbine jet engines able to generate a total power of 20.000 HP. The resulting effect is an extremely streamlined, exhilarating and comfortable feel as the yacht cuts through the water, offering minimal noise levels and vibration as she does.

2. FONERS – Astilleros Bazan – 70 Knots

world's fastest superyacht

In joint first place at a similar top speed of roughly 70 knots is the 41.5m Foners (ex Fortuna). Possessing a colourful and intrepid history, Foners was built in 2000 by Spain’s Astilleros Bazan yard for then-Spanish King Juan Carlos I as a gift by businessmen in the Balearic Islands, and has since been renounced by the royal family in a display of austerity. Powered by two 1280 HP MAN engines and three Rolls Royce 6,700 HP gas turbines driving three KaMeWa water jets, Foners was the fastest superyacht in the world upon delivery until World Is Not Enough matched her high-octane abilities in 2004.

3. GALEOCERDO – Wally Yachts – 65 Knots

world's fastest superyacht

Galeocerdo (118 Wallypower) is the 36m ultra light carbon fiber boat built for Luca Bassani, founder of Wally.

4. GENTRY EAGLE – Vosper Thornycroft – 63 Knots

world's fastest superyacht

Gentry Eagle was delivered in 1988 by Vosper Thornycroft, built for American racer Tom Gentry in an attempt to break the record for fastest Atlantic crossing (held at the time by Virgin’s Richard Branson).

5. KEREON – AB Yachts – 62.3 Knots

world's fastest superyacht

Kereon, the 27m luxury yacht delivered in 2005 by AB Yachts in Italy to industry acclaim.

If we should have inspired you for your next yacht charter and you’d like to book KEREON’s bigger sister MY TOY or another fierce superyacht for a summer get-away in Greece, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

World’s Fastest Mega Yacht

world's fastest superyacht

The World’s fastest yacht is a great title to hold. After all, Superyachts, and especially Mega yachts are all about Excess. Whose yacht is better than everyone else’s

Let’s make something clear

The title, “World’s fastest yacht” can be held by a number of yachts and the overall fastest is much, much quicker than this one. But, there is a difference between a yacht, Superyacht, and a Mega Yacht. For the sake of this article we are talking about the world’s fastest yacht in “Mega Yacht” terms i.e. over 100m in length .

Launched by Lurssen in 2013 and measuring 180m, M/Y Azzam was, at the time the largest yacht in the world. She was only beaten by the as yet unfinished REV Ocean last year when she was launched measuring 182.9m. So, Azzam is no longer officially the largest but she is definitely, for her size at least, the fastest.

Some Stats:

Beam: 20.8m

Draft: 4.3m

Propulsion: 2 x 9000 KW MTU Diesel engines + Two Gas turbines. Total power = 97,000hp

Fuel consumption (top speed): 13 tonnes = 15,294 litres per hour

Azzam was not built to be the World’s fastest yacht, or indeed the world’s largest yacht either. She was originally designed to be 145m but in the process of “optimisation” she grew.

During sea trials in the North Sea she reached 32 knots. She can reach a max speed of 33 knots. That’s quick for any yacht, but a 180m one! Can you imagine?

Victory Marine calls the Bolide 80 its first “Hyper Muscle Yacht,” which will be part of a limited-edition series from 60 to 170 feet. Designer Brunello Acampora and his tema of engineers pulled out all the stops on this 80, creating a full-carbon-fiber boat with more than 6,000 horsepower. The multi-stepped hull helps propel the Bolide to its top speed of 70 knots (84 mph), while accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of burning about half the fuel of a much smaller flybridge motoryacht at lower cruising speeds. The designer took care to give the Bolide a streamlined profile, with aerodynamic shapes to reduce resistance. The interior includes the captain’s cabin, a full-sized galley, open salon, and a forward owner’s area with a bedroom, en suite and wardrobe area. It will make its global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Weighing 60 tons, and packing almost 7,000 hp, the military-looking superyacht with its battleship-gray paint and bright-red diagonal hull stripes, hit an astonishing top speed of 62.5 knots (71.9 mph) during sea trials. Chato is currently for sale in the South of France for $715,000.

Oci Ciornie’s Vripack-designed interior may take inspiration from aircraft designs, but it’s the boat’s naval architecture by Don Shead and the combination of two 1,800hp MTU 16V 2000 M90 engines, a 4,600 hp AVCO Lycoming gas turbine and Arneson surface drives that put it on this list. Delivered in 1998 by Palmer Johnson with an aluminum hull, the 82-foot boat thrusts through water at 60 knots (69.04 mph), giving all eight guests the waterborne ride of their lives.

The numbers almost defy logic. With a length of 224 feet, the all-aluminum superyacht Destriero is massive. Now add a trio of GE Aviation LM1600 gas turbines totaling an insane 60,000 hp and the incredulity only increases. Flat out, Destriero could scythe through waves at a staggering 59 knots, or 68 mph. Back in 1992, just one year after its launch, the Fincantieri-built rocketship showed its chops by challenging the famous Blue Riband trans-Atlantic speed record. Averaging 53.09 knots for the 3,106 nautical-mile run, Destriero shattered the record, only to be denied the trophy for being classed as a private yacht and not a commercial passenger vessel. Sadly, today the iconic yacht lies largely abandoned at one of Lurssen’s yards in Germany, awaiting rescue.
