Whiskybase General Terms and Conditions

Introduction

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”).

These General Terms and Conditions (“Terms”), as well as our Privacy Statement (“ Privacy Statement ”), apply to your (“you”, “Member”) use of the Service (which includes visits to the Whiskybase websites).

By using our website(s) and registering for the Service, you expressly confirm acknowledgment and acceptance of the Terms and agree to be bound by them.

Our Service, age restrictions

Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.

Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. If no such law exists in a Member’s country of residence, the Member has to be over 21 years old to use the Service. We have the right to ask you to provide proof of your age and/or to provide further identification to prevent underage usage and/or for any other legal or legitimate purpose. By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age.

You acknowledge that the Service is protected by copyrights and database rights. The Service and your account are for your personal use only and may not be shared with any third parties. We grant to registered Members a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable right to access and use the Service and to view its contents (“License”). Without limiting the foregoing, the License does not include (a) the right to resell or use the Service commercially (unless explicitly allowed under the applicable subscription plan), (b) the right to make the Service publicly available or use for public display, (c) any downloading, duplicating, or copying, collection and use of any contents of the Services, e.g. bottle information, descriptions, ratings, retail and secondary market price observations, values, etc., (d) the right to license, use, sell, archive, reproduce, distribute, modify, perform, publish, create derivative works from, offer for sale, or use of the Service. Further, you shall not circumvent, remove, alter, deactivate, degrade or thwart any of the content protections, decompile, reverse engineer or disassemble the Service and any software related to or used in or by the Service.

Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates.

Member registration and accounts

You must create an account to be able to use our Service where the following personal information is required: username, a valid email address, country of residence and a password. Additional personal information may be provided by you if you wish to do so. Please read our Privacy Statement for more information on our use and processing of your personal information.

You are responsible for all activities through your account. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide to us in relation to your account, and for updating it where necessary. You are not allowed to create multiple accounts. We may terminate or temporarily suspend your account to protect you, ourselves or our partners from (suspected) identity theft or other (suspected) fraudulent (e.g. false, misleading, deceptive) activity. You have the obligation to keep your login credentials confidential. You shall not authorize any others to use or access your account.

Termination

You may terminate your account at any time. If you terminate your account, you will no longer have access to the Service and your Contributions (specified below), if any. We do not provide back-ups of your Contributions. To terminate your account, login to your account, go to the “settings page”, and follow the termination instructions]. If you cancel your subscription, your account will be automatically closed.

We reserve the right to immediately and without prior notice deactivate, suspend and/or terminate your account if you do not abide by the Terms, if you act unlawful, if you do not act or use the Service in good faith, or if you cause any harm whatsoever to the Service, to other Members, to other persons or to us. You shall be notified of the deactivation, suspension, or termination via the email address linked to your account.

Member behavior and Member contributions

We do not allow the sale and/or purchase of products between members through the Service, e.g. through private messages. If you wish to sell or purchase products, please refer to the Whiskybase Market.

Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”).

You shall not contribute any discriminatory, racially offensive, abusive, offensive, threatening, intimidating, inaccurate, incomplete, obscene, profane, harassing, or illegal material and/or Contributions, or any other Contributions that infringes, or may infringe, or violates or may violate, any third party’s rights, including intellectual and industrial property rights, rights of privacy and publicity. Further, deliberate or undeliberate manipulation of information on the Service (such as ratings), any activity with the intent to influence such information, value or reviews on products (e.g. bottles, brands, distilleries, bottlers or shops) are not allowed. Contacting Members to sell or buy products or requesting other Members to sell or buy bottles outside our affiliated platform Whiskybase Market is considered a violation of these Terms and will lead to the termination of your account without prejudice to other rights we have under these Terms and applicable law.

You acknowledge, understand and agree that we are not obligated to review, check or monitor any Contributions, but we may do so. Furthermore, we may (without prior notice and without giving reasons) change, delete or alter any Contributions, whether in whole or in part, that in our sole judgment and discretion violates these Terms, is unlawful, is in any way harmful to you, Members, us, the Service or any third parties.

You hereby grant to us (including our parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, (sub)licensees, assignees, successors, authorized third party contractors), the worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, unlimited in any way, non-exclusive, transferable, free of charge and fully paid-up, right and license to duplicate, copy, reproduce, distribute, publish, display, make available, perform, use, store, record, play, adapt, alter, modify, make derivative works of, or in any other way exploit your Contributions (including any past Contributions you already posted/created on the Service (and any previous version thereof)), through any and all means and media, whether now known or hereafter devised, including but not limited to the internet, websites, print, magazines, books, mobile applications, games, commercials, etc. We have the right to transfer, assign the license granted by you to us, or grant licenses and sublicenses to our licensees, or have and allow them granting sublicenses to licensees to any other parties.

You hereby represent and warrant that you are authorized to make any Contributions, that your Contributions and the use by us will not infringe or violate the rights of any third party. You will defend (at our option), indemnify and hold harmless us and our parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, (sub)licensees, assignees, successors, authorized third party contractors from any and all loss, damage, claim, liability or expense (including reasonable outside legal fees and costs) actually incurred as a result of a third party claim arising out of a breach or alleged breach of your obligations, representations and warranties made herein.

Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us.

The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein.

The Service, including any information contained therein, does not constitute any advice (such as but not limited to investment advice, tax advice, financial, economic advice) and is not intended as recommendations (whether personal, in general, or otherwise) to invest in companies, products, services. Any investment and purchase made, or action(s) taken based upon (information in) the Service may and will involve significant risk (such as, but not limited to loss, total loss). Past “performances” (e.g. values, ratings, etc.) of products (e.g. bottles, casks) and companies (e.g. distilleries) listed in the Services are not indicative of, nor are guarantee of future results.

Miscellaneous

We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Any new functionalities, tools and features shall be part of and governed by the Terms from the moment they are launched and/or available. Further, we reserve the right to modify, change, discontinue the Service, add or remove features, update the Service, change its appearance, temporarily and permanently, at any time, in whole or any part thereof.

We may change or update the Terms from time to time. You will be notified of any changes through the Service and/or by email. Your continued use of the Service after any such changes or updates take effect will constitute acknowledgement and (as applicable) acceptance of those changes or updates.

We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets.

If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.

Rare And Collectible Whiskey For Every Connoisseur

There are few greater delights than a perfect bottle of whisky, particularly to the hedonistic whisky connoisseur. Old and rare whiskies hold incredible value and ought to be enjoyed and savoured before too much is given to the angel's share. Glenfiddich Spirit of Speyside

A purchase of compassion, Glenfiddich will be releasing 450 bottles of an exclusive 13-year old whisky via the Whisky Auctioneer, with 100% of the proceeds going to causes affected by Covid-19.

Each bottle has its own identity number between 1 and 450 and has been signed by Glenfiddich's Master Distiller, Brian Kinsman, chosen to honour the annual Spirit of Speyside Festival, which was ultimately cancelled for 2020.

Port Ellen 40-Year-Old

For a bit of history from a now closed distillery, this Port Ellen 40-year-old os just the ticket. It is one of the oldest and rarest releases ever to be made available direct from the Port Ellen distillery. The whisky is a blend of nine casks of original Port Ellen stock, in four American oak hogsheads and five European oak butts, creating a unique Port Ellen unlike anything from the distillery before.

With only 1,380 bottles of this release available to the public, this collector's piece is a steal.

The Macallan 52 Year Old (2018 Release)

Like gold dust, this is just one of 255 bottles. Aged in first-fill European oak sherry seasoned cask the 52-year-old comes in an oak presentation box.

Nose :  Leather, polished wood and furniture polish, it’s like an antique shop in here. There’s also walnuts, cooked peaches, dried apricots and dates.

Palate : Full creamy texture, oily even, with savoury notes of leather and tobacco, joined after some time with sweeter fudge, chocolate and vanilla with a touch of wood tannin and some dark cherry fruit.

Finish : Long; to begin with its pepper and orange peel but the lingering taste is sweeter, chocolate and salted caramel note that goes on.

Balvenie 56 Year Old 1962

This 56-year-old was released as part of the The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapter Five, a collection which honours malt master David C. Stewart MBE, and features whisky picked out by the man himself. A limited run of only 90 bottles make this one exclusive whisky.

Nose : Fragrant fruity and honeyed, ending on a delicate spiciness.

Palate : Rich, velvety with toffee, honeycomb, vanilla, orange peel and ginger.

Finish : Sweet, citrus and gentle spices.

Glenlivet 64 Year Old 1954

Having spent six decades in single refill sherry casks, Gordon & MacPhail bottled it up in 2018 for the Private Collection. Only 222 bottles were released and the whisky comes in a wooden presentation box.

Nose : Initially sweet with hints of brown sugar, toffee apple with light herbal aromas. Cinnamon and aniseed notes add depth, whisky thick fruit jam, lemon curd and vanilla undertones linger.

Palate : Silky smooth and mouth coating. Thick golden syrup mingles with stewed fruit, rum and raisin and touches of dark chocolate compliment the delicate sherry flavours. Sweet brown sugar remains, whilst hints of walnut add a slightly drying aspect.

Finish : A refined and humble dram with a black peppercorn and lingering mature oak finish.

Bowmore Black 3-Year-Old 1964 - Final Edition

The final batch of a three-part release of Oloroso cask 1964, bottled back in 1990. These three releases have earned themselves huge respect from whisky enthusiasts. Tasting notes for this whisky are very limited and come complete with their original presentation boxes.

Every whiskey journey starts somewhere. Where it begins can be crucial, as picking the wrong bottle as an entry point can turn someone off to the spirit and its subgenres for a long time — if not permanently. While it’s possible to fall in love with whiskey through an advanced style like an aggressive rye or a heavily peated Scotch , it’s usually wiser to find a more approachable bottle to ease into the category.

There are plenty of bottles on the market that can help beginners launch their whiskey odyssey. But because the whiskey world is so wide, finding a precise entry-level bottle can be challenging, particularly if you’re not too familiar with what’s on shelves. To help out, we asked 14 bartenders which bottles they like to share with curious whiskey novices. These picks may not instantly fill newbies with the urge to throw down cash on a bottle of Pappy , but they’re a solid place to start.

The requisite 100 proof gives it a great body that carries flavors of toffee and peaches, whether it’s enjoyed neat or on a big ice cube. “Since I started imbibing, I’ve always been a whiskey girl. I particularly love Irish whiskey, and my favorite Irish whiskey to introduce a novice whiskey drinker to will always be Redbreast 15 Year. It is a single-pot still whiskey made from a blend of malted and unmalted barley, triple-distilled in copper stills. It is then aged in oak cask barrels for no less than 15 years. I love to recommend it because it is extremely smooth with balanced notes of fruits and spices that come from the oak-cask aging. You also get a hint of caramel and vanilla through the toasted wood flavors while still introducing the distinct strength of whiskey. Yacht Club is essentially a blended scotch whisky made up of about 40% malt whisky and 60% grain whisky.  Not the worst ratio in the world as there are many much bigger brands out there that use much less malt whisky with more grain.  Where Yacht Club reaches out beyond the norm is by ensuring that the grain elements are at least 5 years old while the malt whisky portion is just a fraction over the legal requirement of 3 years.

There’s no whistles and bells here.  It is what it is.  It’s a decent value scotch whisky.  There are some decent drinkable bottles out there where, without the massive marketing and advertising budgets to fund, more attention can be given to the quality of the spirts used to make the product.  This is definitely one of them.

It’s bottled and packaged in France (blended scotch whisky CAN be exported from Scotland and bottled in other countries – only single malt has to be bottled in Scotland) and it’s exported to most of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Russia.  It typically sells for a few pennies shy of €12 euros a bottle, and we have it about 15% cheaper than that.  It comes with a box, so it’s a pocket-friendly gift for the people you don’t want to spend too much on.

Tasting Notes

We could list off a wonderful story about the nose and the palate and the finish but that would be all pretentious and churlish.  The facts are at this price, most of you would mix it anyway.  It is drinkable with ice.  Not quite as dry as a typical big brand scotch.  Some fruity notes in there.  What matters is that it’s smooth, doesn’t rip your throat off and it doesn’t give you a vile hangover the next day (unlike most cheap booze that ends up in China).

Whisky Jesus crucified a bottle of this over two days (drink responsibly people…..a bottle in a day would be stupid!) and he was still in the office both days after, bright and early, before 8am, lecturing us about our sinful ways when he found out we’d spanked a bottle of prosecco.

The bottle of Evans & Ragland Old Ingledew Whiskey was a part of a trio that financier John Pierpont Morgan (JP Morgan) bought during his visit to Georgia. His son, Jack Morgan, gifted the bottle to James Byrnes (of South Carolina) in the early 1940s.

Jack Morgan gave the other two bottles to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman.

James Byrnes later gifted his Old Ingledew bottle to the grandparents of a gentleman named Rex Woolbright.

In 2008, Rex Woolbright discovered the whiskey bottle at his late uncle’s (Logan Drake) estate in Newberry, South Carolina. 

Woolbright had the bottle assessed by Joseph Hyman, a spirits expert for Skinner Auctioneers and Appraisers. Hyman extracted a sample of the whiskey and sent it to the University of Georgia for carbon dating.

The results indicated that the corn-based whiskey bottle was probably produced between 1763 and 1803.

But the Old Ingledew whiskey’s age was questioned when issues surrounding the authenticity of the carbon dating results came to light. 

Despite all this, the bottle sold for a whopping $137,500 at Skinner Auctioneers in June 2021. 

Why was the authenticity of it’s age questioned?

A few researchers estimated this whiskey’s age at 195 years, placing its origin in the 1820s. This still makes it older than the previous holder of the title — the 1847 bottle of Baker’s Pure Rye Whiskey. 

Moreover, there is no record of an ‘Old Ingledew’ brand. The whiskey was probably bottled by a grocer and commission merchant, Evans & Ragland, in the 1860s. So, Old Ingledew could have been a proprietary label used by the grocer.

Besides, Skinner Auctioneers said that it was common to store spirits in large glass carboys or demijohns (large body vessels with small necks) after aging in a barrel. So, the bottle was consistent with glass manufacturing standards of the 1840-70 period.

Which are the other bottles that came close to holding the title of the oldest whiskey?

• Baker’s Pure Rye Whiskey 1847: It holds the official Guinness World Record for the oldest whiskey. This rye whiskey bottle is supposedly 175 years old, but its price is yet to be determined.
• Macallan “The Reach” 1940 : This is considered to be the oldest whiskey in terms of time spent aging in the cask. It was aged for 81 years before bottling, and the first one in the collection sold for $340,000 at a 2022 Sotheby’s auction.

1. The Macallan ‘The Reach’ 81-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($299,609)

The Reach was distilled at the Macallan Estate in 1940 during the Second World War. It matured for 81 years in a single sherry-seasoned cask. 

There are about 288 bottles of this whiskey. In 2022, master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell unveiled the collection at a Sotheby’s auction.

2. Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 80-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($110,020)

This 80-year-old whisky from the Glenlivet distillery was the previous holder of the oldest aged whisky in the world. There were just 250 decanters (designed by acclaimed architect Sir David Adjaye) made during its 2021 release.

3. The Macallan Red Collection 78-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($124,761)

This 78-year-old single malt whisky (made from malted barley) has slowly matured under the watch of generations of whisky masters at The Macallan Estate. It was bottled in 2020, and it’s part of The Macallan Red Collection — one of the most expensive whiskey collections. 

4. Gordon & MacPhail Generations Mortlach 75-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($43,236)

During its release in 2015, the 75-year-old Mortlach held the title of the oldest whisky ever bottled. It was distilled in 1939 and released in a batch of only 100 teardrop decanters.

5. The Macallan Lalique 72-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($131,891)

The Macallan 72-year-old scotch whisky is a celebration of the collaboration between masters of whisky, architecture, crystal, and craftsmanship. It was distilled in the 1940s and 600 Lalique crystal decanters were released in late 2018.

6. The Dalmore Trinitas 64-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($164,000)

The rare Dalmore Trinitas is a mix of single malt spirits from 1868, 1878, 1926, and 1939. A cherished prize for any whiskey lover, this whiskey was aged for 64 years until only three bottles were crafted for sale in 2010. 

7. The Yamazaki 55-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky ($894,624)

This 55-year-old single malt whisky hails from the birthplace of Japanese whisky, Yamazaki. It was bottled in 2020 and is the oldest and one of the rarest single malt whiskeys from the House of Suntory (a spirits company).

8. Karuizawa Vintage 50-Year-Old Sherry Cask Aged Single Cask Malt Whisky ($170,345)

The Karuizawa Vintage is a Japanese whisky that was aged for half a century in a sherry cask. It was distilled in 1969, and 473 bottles were produced from the cask and released in 2019.

9. The Last Drop 50-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky ($3,902)

The Last Drop is a blended scotch whisky. It comprises a blend of more than 82 whiskeys that spent 47 years in a bourbon cask and 3 years in a sherry cask.

10. Hunter Laing The Sovereign Invergordon 50-Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky ($832)

Hunter Laing’s “The Sovereign” is a single-grain scotch whisky that was distilled in 1964. It was left to mature in a bourbon whiskey barrel for 50 years.

The whiskey was released in 2014 in a limited batch of 252 bottles.

Fun Fact : For Scottish whiskey (scotch), a single malt whiskey must be distilled solely from malted barley and produced at a single distillery. But American whiskey could be advertised as “single malt whiskey” even if it’s produced from malted rye.

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

 “Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

• If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
• Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
• After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
• We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

After the woman realized that her child had been wounded, she called her husband and doctor.

Meanwhile, Russian occupier Ivan Alekseev in the war in Ukraine after a drunken quarrel killed his colleague and tried to cover up the crime, saying it was the work of "Ukrainian saboteurs."

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.
