The 49.5m Van der Graaf schooner Eleonora E , a replica of the record-breaking schooner Westward, launched in 2000, was struck by a 60m offshore supply vessel in Port Tárraco , Tarragona, Spain this morning, Friday 10 June, and later sank.

The incident happened at around 0815 this morning, when the offshore vessel was manoeuvring in harbour and became stuck in reverse. The supply vessel struck Eleonora  with force at midships on the starboard side, before motoring away.

The yacht was moored alongside the seawall, but rapidly began sinking. Drone footage from the port shows the yacht completely submerged, with just the tip of the masts above water. Containment barriers are also visible, to prevent possible fuel pollution.

No crew have been reported injured in the incident.

A major salvage operation is underway to recover the yacht, which is one of the most ambitious modern classic yachts of recent times. Built at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland Eleonora E is a replica of the Herreshoff-designed Westward , one of the most famous racing schooners in the world which raced against yachts such as Britannia and Lulworth in the early 1900s.

Eleonora E  underwent a major refit in 2014 and was listed for sale at £6.9million. Around 160ft long from sprit to stern, when sailing, the yacht carries some 12,000sq ft of sail on the two gaff masts. It sleeps eight guests and four crew in a traditionally styled interior, and comes complete with two classic wooden tenders – one motor, one rowing, both clinker built to the original Herreshoff designs.

Update: 49m Schooner Eleonora E Being Scrapped Following Collision and Sinking

Last June, we posted that the classic 49m schooner was struck by a 60m long search and rescue vessel in Port Tárraco, Tarragona, Spain, and subsequently sank. The search and rescue vessel Punta Mayor was maneuvering in the harbor and became stuck in reverse. The vessel struck Eleonora E at midships on the starboard side, crushing the schooner against a seawall.

Boat International reports that the yacht was left submerged for several weeks following the strike by a search and rescue vessel in June 2022. A refloating operation took place over the course of three weeks in September, and she was relocated to PTW-Shipyard in Tarragona where it was hoped she could be salvaged.

The water-damaged hull has since been moved to a scrapping facility in Vinaròs and the remains of the yacht are expected to be scrapped in the coming weeks.

Built in 2000, at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland,  Eleonora E  is a replica of the Herreshoff-designed Westward , one of the most famous racing schooners in the world which raced against yachts such as  Britannia  and  Lulworth  in the early 1900s.

A yacht,  Eleonora E,  has sunk after being hit by a supply vessel in a Spanish port.

The 49m yacht was moored at Port Tárraco, Tarragona, Spain, when the 60m offshore supply vessel Punta Mayor reportedly crashed into its starboard side during a manoeuvre. The yacht was submerged 30 minutes later in five-metre-deep water, according to eyewitness reports.

Tárraco authorities say that the engines of the supply vessel became blocked while it was reversing. The captain of the supply vessel attempted to drop both anchors and turn off the engines, but could not prevent the collision, which took place at 8.15am local time on Friday (10June22). No injuries have been reported.

$7.2m yacht sinks after collision in a Spanish marina

Sailing yacht Elenora E sank to the bottom of Tarragona Marina, Spain on Friday (June 10th) after being struck by a reversing vessel. Despite local authorities’ attempts to save the vessel, it sank within 30 minutes of the collision. A cleanup operation has started.

The 162ft ( 49.50m ) Elenora E, was moored in the northeastern Spanish town of Tarragona when the incident took place at 8:15 am local time. Port authorities reported on Twitter that the 197ft (60m) maritime rescue boat, Punta Mayor  was reversing when its engines malfunctioned. The crew were unable to stop the vessel from moving despite turning off the engines and using two anchors.

It hit  Eleonora E  at the centre of the hull on its starboard side, creating a waterway that eventually caused the vessel to sink. Port authorities reported that a clean-up operation began shortly after the yacht became submerged to prevent the danger of fuel leakage to the rest of the marina. No one was injured during the incident.

The steel yacht was built by Dutch builders Van Der Graaf and delivered in 2000. Yacht brokers Edmiston previously listed the yacht for sale at $7.2m (€6.9m).

The vessel sank in the same marina where $600m (€573) Crescent is moored after being seized by Spanish authorities in March. Crescent is pictured top right, behind submerged Elenora E. The 442ft (135m) superyacht is linked to sanctioned Russians such as Igor Sechin, CEO, Rosneft, and managed by Imperial Yachts.

Crewmember claims yacht was 'unseaworthy' when it collided with 49m tanker

There are still unanswered questions concerning the incident that involved a 63m superyacht and a 49m tanker in the bahamas….

Image for article Crewmember claims yacht was 'unseaworthy' when it collided with 49m tanker

On 23 December 2021, the 63m motoryacht Utopia IV was involved in a collision with the 49m tanker Tropic Breeze in the Bahamas . The tanker subsequently sank but, fortunately, no lives were lost, and according to various sources, the tanker’s cargo on board included ‘non-persistent materials only’.

While this accident could have been far worse, it should also be highlighted that the initial reports surrounding the incident were limited and somewhat insubstantial considering the gravity of it.

One can’t help but question the deafening silence that followed after hurried official statements had been made praising the rescuers while showcasing gratitude for the limited environmental consequences. While that may be fair, there are still questions that remain unanswered from patchy reports. Now, almost one year later, one of the crewmembers who was on board at the time has decided to speak out against what they deem to be injustices leading up to, and following on from, the incident.

It should be noted that some of these claims have not been verified by evidence. Multiple individuals and organisations were contacted for this article, but very few were willing to go on the record to either confirm or deny these allegations.

yacht eleonora sinks

What happened?

Utopia IV was involved in a collision with tanker Tropic Breeze on 23 December, 2021, sometime between 10pm and 10.15pm. The yacht was on an eight-hour passage through the Bahamas, cruising at a speed of 22 knots, with seven guests on board who were chartering the vessel.

The captain was on watch for the first four hours of this passage, but the crewmember has claimed that they actually left the bridge twice in the first hour, disappearing for up to 20 minutes at a time. Twelve minutes into the second disappearance, the superyacht was in a collision with the tanker.

The radar and all the electronic equipment on board the yacht were in working order. However, the crewmember claims that the issue was that the radar was only zoomed out to about a six-mile radius, and in the time that the captain had disappeared from the bridge, the vessel had already travelled around 12 nautical miles.

The tanker sank in a matter of minutes, but unfortunately, nobody on board Utopia IV could rescue the seven crew on Tropic Breeze. According to the crewmember, Utopia IV didn’t have a rescue tender or a ladder or a pilot door. The crewmember said several of the crew on board sustained major injuries during the collision.

Utopia is a 10,000HP jet boat driven by 4 MTU engines, therefore, even if the vessel did have a stern ladder, it would have beeen impossible to recover anyone from 2m below the swim platform with the main engines still running. M/Y Amara, a nearby 57m Feadship, was able to deploy its crew on its rescue tender and save those on board the tanker.

The collision led to the tanker sinking 2,000 feet below sea level. The crewmember claims the tanker was carrying 150,000 gallons of gasoline and 10,000 gallons of propane, although the management company in charge of the tanker has denied these claims. The tanker’s cargo on board included non-persistent materials – all of which floated to the surface of the water and subsequently dissipated into the atmosphere, meaning the clean-up action was deemed only minimal.

The 32-year-old tanker was found by the authorities to be fully compliant with all national and international safety and vessel integrity standards just a few weeks before the incident. Due to the depth of the ocean at the location where the incident occurred, it was decided by authorities that the tanker could not be salvaged safely.

yacht eleonora sinks

What has happened since?

The crewmember shared a recording of a meeting which took place early afternoon on Christmas Day (roughly 36 hours after the collision). The meeting involved the owner’s in-house lead attorney, the DPA of the charter company, and the Captain and Crew (apart from the Chief Engineer).

In the clip, the attorney promises every crewmember that their wages would be paid to them until they were fit for duty or until they reached maximum medical improvement. Despite this, the crew were informed that the owner had refused to pay their wages the very next day once their January paycheck never showed up.

At least one of the crewmembers has a long-term injury; they are awaiting life-changing surgery and say they haven’t been given a penny since the day of the crash. The legal team who were involved in this have not yet responded to a request for an interview.

Tropic Breeze was one of the smallest tankers in a fleet used to deliver resources to some of the less accessible islands in the Bahamas. Because of its size and specifications, it was the only tanker capable of delivering to these smaller islands, and there were initial worries about the need to dredge around some of the ports to allow space for bigger tankers.

The management company that looks after the fleet has confirmed that the situation will be ‘looked after’ by other vessels currently in the fleet and by the acquisition of another ship. The management company also confirmed that nobody on board Tropic Breeze was seriously injured, but they could not speak on behalf of those on board Utopia IV.

These claims are incredibly illuminating and, if anything, showcase just how easy it is to uncover all the facts of a major incident in the superyacht industry. There is also evidence that suggests the yacht was placed under arrest on the 1st of December 2021.  The owner’s legal team were contacted but there have not yet replied, the yacht management company were also contacted but have not responded. The insurance company that were allegedly associated with the yacht were also contacted for an interview, but did not formally respond. This is an ongoing investigation, and SuperyachtNews will report on the case with caution. The ELEONORA III Sport Hybrid Yacht Sets New Standards

By Victor Baker

Published on September 5, 2016

ELEONORA III

Columbus Yachts has recently launched their new  ELEONORA III superyacht, and we’re dying to talk about it. The innovative 40 M sport hybrid vessel has been designed and developed by the shipyard’s brilliant team alongside interior designer firm Hot Lab Yacht & Design,

The resulting layout features an elegant interior, which benefits from warm materials and soft colors, including Breccia Sarda and Adria Venato marbles, Tay wood and dark oak flooring. Soft wool carpets and precious fabrics complete the classy vibe of the interior, which seems to complement the cool exterior of this lovely yacht.

ELEONORA III is also home to a small bar, located at the entrance of the main deck, as well as a cozy dining area suitable for 8 guests; the lounge area, complete with a sofa and armchairs, placed around a large TV screen, is the perfect spot to relax and entertain yourself.

The master suite definitely deserves a mention as well, even though we don’t have any official photos with it yet, but apparently it features a king-size bed and a bathroom equipped with two marble sinks and glass walls for the shower.

ELEONORA III

Aligned with the “green theme” of the yacht, the wood used for the Columbus Sport Hybrid 40 m was certified to ensure eco-sustainability, while the leather inside has been treated with a special non-toxic substance. With that in mind, an advanced hybrid propulsion sysyrm works hard to enable the vessel to sail at speeds between 3 and 20 knots, while offering optimum fuel efficiency.

The yacht’s hybrid propulsion system was designed, studied and built in close collaboration with the Technical Department of the Palumbo Shipyard., and it should make this vessel sporty and fast, while allowing guests to enjoy comfortable and quiet trips on the seven seas. Is there anything to complain about?

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
