Spencer 59 – Boat Review

  • By Capt. Ken Kreisler
  • Updated: April 28, 2015

Paul Spencer made his mark as a respected captain and fisherman on the offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean. As with most of his ilk, his passion for all things nautical began at an early age with summer jobs in the North Carolina fishing charter business, and he earned his ticket by the time he was 20 years old. Armed with a personal vision of what a sport-fishing boat should be able to do and a hands-on, experienced-based approach to design and construction, he founded Spencer Yachts in 1996 in Manns Harbor, North Carolina. From its humble beginnings in a tin shed, the facility now boasts some 125 employees and custom builds from 37 to 87 feet in length. Attitudes is owned by Joe Pregont, a seasoned boat owner with a passion for real wood and sport-fishing boats with style and flair. He was drawn to Spencer Yachts with an image for his own version of the company’s time-tested, sea-proven 59-footer. “I saw Mimi , a Spencer 59 in Harbour Island in the Bahamas and really liked it,” Pregont says. “After I met Paul there and finished making the rounds stateside, I decided to build my first custom boat with him. This is my second Spencer now, and I can’t wait to get her out on the water.”

As with any custom build, the needs of the individual owner must be met. And for this particular project, it began with a request to make sure the living spaces of Attitudes were big enough, in terms of height, for the Pregont family. “Most of the boys, including my son-in-law, are on the tall side, averaging about 6 feet, 5 inches,” says Pregont. “So when we laid out the interior, we made sure Spencer and his people took that into consideration.” To that end, and without sacrificing that sleek and proportional Spencer profile, Attitudes has an average of 78 inches of headroom or more everywhere inside, from the 80 inches in the accommodations area to as high as 84 inches in the forepeak master. With some of the larger builds, there’s obviously a bit more wiggle room. However, the art aboard this boat meant that the design needed to be just right. “We measured every room layout and every space, not only on Attitudes but on others to make sure it was done to the family’s specifications,” adds Capt. Jamie Van Winkle.

A fully found galley is forward of that, and a comfortable dinette sits to starboard. For the accommodations below, it was agreed that the three–stateroom, two-head layout would include an open starboard hallway bunk, measuring some 80 inches long and 36 inches wide with massive storage below. And whether in the forepeak or guest quarters, there is more than ample space in which to keep all those necessary items for extended trips.

With excellent fit and finish noted everywhere, the salon features tons of rod and reel storage below the portside seating area.

A rod closet below allows storage for all the gear you could need.

Engine Room

Well-lit and beautifully finished, the engine room is accessed through a centerline hatch forward in the cockpit. “I had that hatch and dogging entrance door made wide enough to slide my spare props right in, eliminating any need for boxes being on the deck when we are traveling,” Van Winkle says. Once inside, the engine room offers more than ample space to access all equipment, including batteries and electric systems, pumps, valves, refrigeration units, air conditioning, sea chest, and switches. The CAT 21.5 kW generator came encased in a sound enclosure and mounted athwartships in front of the twin C18 1,150 hp Caterpillar mains. An alleyway leads from the engine space to the lazarette. Not only is it an excellent storage area with easy access, it also eliminates the need for a deck hatch, thus preventing any chance of water intrusion during a tussle with a big fish or big water.

The cockpit featured all the necessary accessories, such as mezzanine seating, fish boxes, livewell, refrigerator and freezer compartments, and a BlueWater chair. “I’ve been dealing with the company for years and really like the way Tom Ackel and his crew deliver a product,” says Van Winkle. Made with high-grade stainless hardware and selected teak, it’s the biggest one they make, and it will definitely see a lot of action on this boat. Her coamings and transom are all teak. This owner really likes his boat trimmed out as much as possible; to show off the aft end of Attitudes , about 30 coats of varnish were applied to the transom before being covered with clear coat, after which the gold-leaf name was applied and then buried in multiple layers of clear coat as well. “We go out of our way to keep the deep-drop lead and the marlins from scratching it up,” Van Winkle says. “All this stuff is the real deal with a custom boat.”

Simplicity was key to laying out the bridge area. To that end, the helm features a three-screen electronics display. Practical and kind of old school by some standards, it offers a clean, uncomplicated seating area forward for guests, while giving the skipper all the tools and view aft for when the action is hot and heavy. Electric reels and radios are in separate overhead compartments, and I found excellent storage areas here as well. The Pipewelders tower is an outstanding piece of equipment and finished off as well as any I’ve seen anywhere. “I try not to overdo it up here,” Van Winkle says, noting how easy it is to reach anything he could need while fishing or getting from place to place.

Construction

Once the jig is set up in the Manns Harbor shop, the hull is trucked to Wanchese where the interiors, engines, painting (with Imron) and the rest of the finishing projects are completed. Attitudes is a cored boat, using Divinycell and Core-Cell, and it upgrades tried-and-true construction methods with new materials. For strength, her backbone — being the stringers — is still laminated wood, as are the chines. All that is set on coring, which is glassed over and vacuum-bagged. Once the whole boat is done, it is then cooked by building an oven around it to cure it and get rid of some post-cure issues. “She’s the second boat we’ve done this way. Because of the resultant weight loss, strength and stiffness, Spencer Yachts will be doing it from now on,” says Van Winkle.

Performance

“I just didn’t like the harmonics of the five-bladed props,” Van Winkle says to me as we headed out of Pirates Cove Marina in Stuart, Florida, for some time out on the water. Swapping them out for a pair of Veem four-blade, 31-inch wheels, his reaction was immediate: “Now that’s how things should sound,” he says. “Quiet.” Having not been aboard with the former props, I could not judge the difference, but a smooth increase in speed was quite apparent as we approached 1,750 rpm with a 70 percent load.

Holding her there, Attitudes moved through the water at 29 knots at what I would call a slow cruise. (Not too shabby at 1,500 as well, with a 23-knot rate.) When we advanced the throttles to 2,000 rpm, at 76 percent load, I noted 34.5 knots. She has a definite sports-car feel with quick response to the helm as she cut tight and steady turns, and she tracked straight and true.

Spencer’s particular knack for building a boat results in a sleek, well-proportioned look wrapped around an impressive performance package. From the front of the house, to the shape and size of the windows, to the sweep of the overhang, Spencer boats share a unique profile. With the 66-foot Alpha Bravo , a 74 named Flight Plan , Inappropriate , a 69-footer, and Gratitude , which measures 62 feet along with several others in the works, you’ll be seeing a lot more Spencer Yachts on the water in the near future. And that’s a good thing. Photo Courtesy Spencer Yachts

How to Plan and Book the Perfect Yacht Charter

For those who have been dreaming about sailing on a yacht, maybe it’s time to finally go for it..

How to Plan and Book the Perfect Yacht Charter

Just you and your crew and the open sea.

Courtesy of Goolets

Shivering with excitement, I finally fulfilled a dream of mine this past October when I jumped into the Adriatic Sea off the stern of a private yacht. It just always seemed to me like such a glamorous, carefree thing to do. Although a colorful floatie awaited me in the water (I am not a great swimmer), it still felt as indulgent as it sounds. The plunge was off the coast of Croatia where the spectacularly tri-toned blue water was so clear I could see all the way down to the bottom of the sea below.

My shipmates cheered me on in our little isolated patch of Adriatic—besides the passengers and crew there was not another soul in sight. Along Croatia’s charming and remote stretches of coastline, a captain might tie a 164-foot yacht to a tree on shore for lack of a proper port.

After decades spent cruising on ships of all sizes, I finally had my first-ever private yacht experience this fall courtesy of Goolets , a Slovenian charter company that represents more than 100 ships owned by local Croat skippers. Also onboard were more than a dozen other writers from the United Kingdom and the United States, invited to explore some of Croatia’s 1,200 islands on a four-night sailing and to witness firsthand why the private yacht experience is growing in popularly.

Our itinerary took us from Split, Croatia’s second largest city, to red-roofed limestone fishing villages, historic towns, “secret” swimming holes, and past scenery that varied from lush to barren. But we didn’t rush—a key to a successful yacht sailing.

One mistake that some people make when booking a yacht is planning to cover too much ground, says Mitja Mirtič, who runs Goolets with his wife, Alenka. “It takes away from the pleasures,” he explains. “The best part is when you just stay anchored in the morning, take a swim before breakfast, you take it easy.”

Yachts became a particularly enticing travel option during the pandemic, a way to safely travel with your bubble in a stunning destination. In that sense, the experience is as luxurious as it is practical—all your accommodations, belongings, services, and crew sail around with you as you visit lesser-known ports and coastal communities.

Based on my brief but convincing introduction, yachting is not at all like what is depicted on the sensationalized Bravo show Below Deck, except for maybe the pampering and convivial service—otherwise there’s (usually) much less drama and a lot more relaxation and cultural exploration. It’s an intimate way to explore gorgeous shores, while also enjoying quiet interludes sailing along the open sea. And, of course, there are the requisite cocktails in the hot tub.

For those who have been dreaming about a yacht vacation, it may be easier to plan than you may think. Here are some tips for how to choose, plan, and book a private yacht experience.

The most popular destinations for yachting

Croatia ranks high on the wish list of many yacht fans. According to a recent Bloomberg Wealth super-yacht index , it’s sixth on the places where super-yachts were hanging out this summer. If you’re seeking some sailing inspiration, the full list of popular yachting destinations, according to the index, is:

How to choose your yacht

Private yachts range from basic sailing boats from under $5,000 per week to over-the-top super-yachts—basketball legend Michael Jordan cruised Croatia in August on a $1 million super-yacht with its own helipad, 10-foot waterslide, and gym, for instance.

Most yachts around the world hold up to 12 guests in six cabins. The ship I sailed on in Croatia, Freedom , is being reconfigured from a 39-passenger mini-cruise ship to a mega-yacht that will sleep up to 22 guests. After a winter redo, facilities will include two master suites, a massage room, cinema, gym, pool, and Jacuzzi. Clients will be able to charter the yacht starting from about $92,500/week, an experience that includes concierge services designed to assist big families or groups of friends in planning their private vacation.

When looking at a yacht to charter, it’s important to consider who will be joining you—if you are bringing kids, for instance, that will change the group dynamic—and how much time you plan to spend onboard as opposed to on shore, which will determine how much space you’ll actually need and use. Tight quarters are fine for some people, while others want room to spread out, but you will pay more for extra space.

How do food and drinks work on a private yacht?

When booking a yacht, you can cater the food to your preferences.

When booking a yacht, you can cater the food to your preferences.

On yacht charters you pay extra for food. The crew can stock your favorite food items; before your sailing you might be asked what you like to eat—I put fresh seafood high on my list when asked.

You may choose how many meals a day you want to eat onboard (as opposed to at restaurants on land). For full board (three meals daily), Goolets charges from about $575 per person, per week. You can also upgrade to a luxury gourmet cuisine package from about $1,390 per person, per week. I was impressed by what the two-person chef team on Freedom could create in a relatively small galley space—fresh flowers decorated beautifully presented dishes, including zucchini carpaccio with goat cheese and Croatian truffles, shrimp and black rice with squid ink, and Croatian leg of lamb.

Alcohol is typically an extra charge as well. A Goolets package with quality Croatian wines and beers and an international assortment of liquor costs $575 per adult, for a weeklong sailing.

Do private yachts come with a crew?

Freedom is staffed by a crew of about 11, including a captain, chefs, a masseuse, deckhands, bartenders, cleaners, and servers. You can also request, and pay for, additional crew—such as a dive master, fitness trainer, or a hair stylist. Most luxury yachts come with a crew of one to six, starting with the captain.

How private yacht companies help with itinerary planning

Having local experience helps in determining where to cruise, wherever you are sailing. Our captain, Ivan, who also owns Freedom , devised an activity-packed but never overloaded route from Split, where there’s a modern airport that is relatively easy to get to via international flight connections. (And where you can see the remains of Roman emperor Diocletian’s retirement home before sailing away.)

We hit Croatian hot spots such as trendy Hvar, where we dined at Gariful, a seafood restaurant that musician Jon Bon Jovi liked so much he left an autographed guitar (now proudly displayed on a wall).

We stopped by Korcula, a Venetian walled city, and quaint Bol for the famous Golden Horn beach, which looks as its name suggests. We boarded small fishing boats to view the famed Blue Cave, where the very blue sea is reflected on limestone walls.

Goolets prides itself in picking the best tour guides on shore, which was certainly the case in the former Yugoslavian army base of Vis, where we rode in jeeps to see a British-built former airfield and other remnants from World War II. On tiny Moro island, off Korcula, we stopped by a beach bar only accessible by boat, where Croatian oysters are paired with Ostreum sparkling wine, aged for more than a year under the sea.

These unique outings elevated the sailing to a truly memorable, one-of-a-kind travel experience. You will want to make sure that whatever yacht charter company you choose can assist you in doing the same.

Other handy yacht charter tips

  • The best time of year for sailing on a private yacht charter is during the off season, typically late April or early May, late September, and October.
  • Wherever you charter a yacht, make sure you understand exactly what is included . Generally, extra charges cost 30 percent above the basic charter price. For instance, in addition to food and drink, fuel can add significantly to your charter cost—in Croatia, four hours’ worth of fuel per day is typically included.
  • Gratuities add 5 to 20 percent (with lower suggested amounts in the Mediterranean and slightly higher in North America).
  • Other expenses may include private marina fees, natural park entrances, and taxes.
  • Don’t forget water toys. Your yacht may stock snorkel equipment and can add diving equipment (for an extra charge). Other toys may include paddleboards, kayaks, Jet Skis, waterslides, water trampolines, and a tender boat for thrilling inner-tube rides. Be sure to find out what is onboard in advance so that you can embrace your favorite water activities.

See Four Seasons' upcoming ultra-luxury cruise with a $350,000-a-week suite bigger than most homes

  • Four Seasons says it will begin sailing an  ultra-luxury yacht cruise in January 2026.
  • The 222-guest vessel would have 95 spacious suites and 11 dining options — but food wouldn't be free.
  • The largest suite would have four floors and bedrooms, a spa, and a price of $350,000 per sailing.

Insider Today

Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

The company says the 95-suite vessel will debut in January 2026 and cost a minimum of $20,000 per weeklong sailing.

For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry.

The ultra-plush 14-deck Four Seasons I is scheduled for 19 voyages in 2026 to more than 130 Caribbean and Mediterranean ports.

Reservations opened two weeks ago. Those interested can register to join a waitlist or book through a travel agent.

So far, "sales have been very encouraging, and the demand is exciting to see," Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations for Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, told Business Insider in a statement. The company is a joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Renderings make the Four Seasons I look as opulent as the brand's land-based properties.

flight plan yacht

Four Seasons says its vessel will have 95 suites ranging from 537 to 9,975 square feet, some with three bedrooms.

The smallest suite starts at $19,700 for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Athens, Greece.

No windowless interior cabins here: Like other ultra-luxe cruises, the suites would all have terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows.

flight plan yacht

Customers could expect upscale amenities like a walk-in closet, down-filled duvets and pillows, and marble dual vanity bathrooms, per Four Seasons.

The most premium suites would also feature additional accommodations for "personal assistants," such as au pairs or security personnel.

Some options, like the 7,952-square-foot Loft Suite, could be adjoined with seven other cabins to accommodate up to 20 people.

flight plan yacht

Without connecting cabins, the Loft Suite would already have three bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and a sauna.

Others, like the largest Funnel Suite, would have its own spa and kitchen.

flight plan yacht

Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel , will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms.

Not to mention the private elevator, pool, and $350,000-a-voyage price tag.

Accommodations of this price and size are generally unheard of in the cruise industry.

flight plan yacht

Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option.

Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

flight plan yacht

While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest.

Royal Caribbean and other mass-market cruise lines are beloved, in part, for their unlimited complimentary food options.

flight plan yacht

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fare also covers caviar, foie gras, and Champagne.

But don't expect any of these to be free on the Four Seasons I.

Breakfast would be complimentary. Lunch, dinner, and booze would not.

flight plan yacht

The vessel's 11 restaurants and lounges would be priced similarly to Four Seasons' on-land properties. (A dinner entrée at its resort on the Caribbean island of Nevis — also one of the ship's destinations — ranges from $34 to $163.)

The pricing structure may sound odd to most cruise traditionalists. (Hey, at least WiFi would be "free.")

flight plan yacht

But some of the ship's amenities could look familiar: Like most cruise liners, the Four Seasons I would have a pool, spa, and clubs for children and teens.

The company also promises a lounge and marina that will open onto the water, giving guests direct access to activities like snorkeling or windsurfing.

Four Seasons Yachts plans to take delivery of its $399 million vessel, now being built by famed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, in late 2025.

flight plan yacht

A second Fincantieri-built ship would join the hospitality company's fleet the following year. The next vessel would cost more than 400 million euros, about $429.2 million, Four Seasons says.

This isn’t Four Seasons' first foray into itinerary-based vacations.

flight plan yacht

The company has also found "tremendous success" in its private jet-based "cruises," Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told BI in a statement.

Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour. Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands."

But its new ultra-luxe cruise arm would be entering an increasingly crowded luxury market, soon to be dominated by like-minded hospitality giants.

flight plan yacht

High-end Aman Resorts and Orient Express plan to launch their own luxury cruises in 2027 and 2026, respectively.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025.

Interested in a hotelier-owned vacation at sea but don't want to pay the luxury price tag? Margaritaville's cruise is an affordable $75 for two nights.
