Company History

For over half a century, the shipyard Aquanaut Yachting Holland, founded by the brothers Baccarani , has been manufacturing high-quality steel yachts. It is located in the town of Sneek in the Northern Netherlands, in the land of the Frisians legendary shipbuilders and sailors. The company has already more than 1300 launched the yacht. In the early stages in the design of ships Aquanaut was attended by experts of the currently popular design Bureau >Vripack. Yachts shipyard in especially high demand in the Netherlands , Germany and France . Today Aquanaut is also the importer of the Finnish composite boats >Aquador, >Flipper >Bella on the home market, and also has its own Charter fleet of 15 yachts.

Over 35 experts in the modern enterprise with an area of 35,000 square meters of hand-made custom yachts, the production cycle is complete, that contributes the most to close cooperation between customer and manufacturer, as well as the implementation of rigorous quality control. Oh buoy! Rowing record-breaker Matthew Holland on bringing sartorial charm to the Thames as a presenter of the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race - and his years taking home the coveted trophy

With its history dating back as far as the early 19th century, the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race has provided a spectacle of sporting heritage at the high calibre for almost 200 years. This weekend, for its 169th edition, the event once again brought thousands to the riverbanks of the Thames to witness the famed OxBridge head-to-head. And on that all-important podium stood a real-life rowing record-breaker, Matthew Holland - the first sportsman to cox both the Men’s and Women’s team for Cambridge in London.

Holland, currently a doctoral student in chemistry at Oxford and certified stalwart of the event owing to his coxing prowess (he won both his matches in 2017 and 2019, setting a record time for the Women’s Race), returned to the rowing rendezvous, this time to present alongside Clare Balding, in his fourth time doing so at the gig. ‘The Boat Race is such an exciting part of the British Social Calendar, and it is a truly historic event dating back to 1829, so having the chance to be a part of it is very special to me. Live television is always very exciting, and certainly a bit nerve-wracking, but it is also terrific fun,’ Holland shared. And on working with esteemed TV heavyweights Holland gushed, ‘Working with Clare Balding, Andrew Cotter, and Lee McKenzie is such a treat; we always have an absolutely terrific time, and it is great to catch up on all the gossip when we aren’t filming. Rowing is exciting, but it can be quite difficult to follow for those who have not rowed before, so trying to explain the nuances and the exciting bits to people watching at home is a very enjoyable challenge.’

Ahead of the event, Holland came to Tatler for a styling session with myself. And while the laboratories and row boats typical of his day-to-day might not make for your usual catwalk, the riverbanks from Putney to Chiswick do indeed act as a perfect conduit for nautical chic on race day. Naturally, I wanted to nod to all the rich history of the sport with Holland’s look and knowing that one of my most favourite heritage-celebrating brands, Rowing Blazers, were approaching a ten year milestone, it felt as though it was written in the stars.

Former-rowing-champion-turned-designer, Jack Carlson, is the man behind the label. In 2013, alongside his US team, Carlson won Henley Royal Regatta. Like Holland, Carlson served as a cox for the event. A year later, infatuated with the rich tapestry of rowing clubs’ sartorial clobber, embarked on a journey around the world to discover the proudly vivid colours and patterns splashed upon team’s blazers, collecting his findings in his book, Rowing Blazers . Having studied archeology at Oxford during his time in England, Carlson then put his skills of uncovering hidden gems into fashion when birthed his line of tantalising tailoring in honour of this esteemed tradition in his tome’s namesake.

For Holland’s ensemble of rigger-ous chic, we opted for the ‘Ripley Jacket’. A bold double-breasted navy number befit with golden buttons, we paired the look with more of the country’s most discerning menswear ateliers; dark grey wool trousers from Savile Row’s Huntsman , and knitwear from Marylebone -cum-King’s-Road hotspot for Italian elegance, Luca Faloni . Holland was officially ready for race day.

At Tatler HQ, we caught up on who to look out for this year. ‘I think one of the best aspects of the Boat Race is that the students come into it from all walks of life, and with a wide variety of experiences. Every student-athlete has their own story, and watching the Boat Race become a part of that story is special and exciting. In the Women’s Race, Julia Lindsay from Canada and Greek-Australian Annie Anezakis are sat in two very important seats in the boat. They have been fantastic friends to me, and we always have a terrific time together, so I am excited to see how they will fare,’ said Holland. ‘In the men’s race, Saxon Stacey for Oxford is the youngest competitor this year, and I know he is going to be a big star in the future (both in rowing and in the media – such a character!), so I can’t wait to see what he can do. Ed Bracey, the Cambridge cox, is following in his father’s footsteps. Andrew Bracey coxed the Cambridge boat in 1991, whilst his girlfriend (and Ed’s mother) coxed the Oxford reserve crew that year. They had to keep their relationship secret from the rest of the crews, and so it will be a real treat to watch Ed pick up where his parents left off,’ he added. He certainly wasn’t wrong - as Cambridge took home the trophies for both heats this Saturday.

Post paddling up from Putney to Chiswick, those on the rowing scene celebrate in true champion’s style . ‘After the race there is a grand gala dinner, where all of the old Cambridge rowers and coxes who have been in the race in previous years come and celebrate with this year’s crews. There are some very rousing speeches, and a large round of applause to welcome this year’s crews as life members of the Cambridge University Boat Club. All, of course, washed down with excellent food and plenty of wine. It has then become something of a tradition that everyone goes out to a club and dances into the small hours with the crews. I remember vividly after my race in 2019 the oldest alumni of the race (an 87 year old man) coming out to the nightclub with his zimmer frame, and dancing with a walking stick until 4am. The atmosphere is electric,’ Holland shares.

Oh to be a fly on the wall at this year’s afterparty. Many congratulations to the Cambridge teams - and, of course, to Matthew Holland!
