Lil Yachty and James Blake to Release ‘Bad Cameo’ This Month
- By Kory Grow
The time has finally come for Lil Yachty ‘s fans to ask themselves, “What the fuck? When they do this?” At least that’s what the rapper predicted his fans would think in February when he first started teasing his new collaborative album, Bad Cameo , with James Blake . Now, Yachty and Blake have set June 28 as the release date for the album, though they haven’t yet released a track list or single.
The duo recently discussed the collaboration with Complex , with Yachty revealing that he DM’d Blake in 2020 about how much he loved Blake’s Assume Form but never heard back since Blake wasn’t checking Instagram at the moment. Fortuitously, though, the admiration was mutual. “I’ve been a fan of Yachty for years,” Blake said. “And when I heard his last record [ Let’s Start Here ], I was like, this is really a turn. Not many artists are brave enough to do something that’s kind of opposite of the last thing they did.” A mutual friend eventually introduced them.

“I can tell why you chose that beat because it just feels wistful and sort of, I don’t know, endless,” Blake told Yachty in the Complex interview. “It just keeps going round and creates this perfect bed for you to just tell the story or say how you feel about her.”
In February, Yachty spoke about how unusual the project is for both artists in an Instagram video . “I think James has worked with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists, but this project is just like … It’s so left … for both of us,” he said.

Breaking down the 14 songs Lil Yachty just dropped on SoundCloud
L il Yachty just surprised fans with 14 tracks, including features from artists like 21 Savage and Vory, on his SoundCloud page called "tHE CONCRETE LeaK sYstem." In a now-deleted tweet, Lil Boat made the announcement, which shared the link to his SoundCloud page and a re-tweet from an earlier post, which read:
"Uploaded new songs on the concrete leak system late last night."
It appears these tracks are reposted leaks from Boat's older discography, especially given the fact that the cover art for his profile appears to be Lil Yachty dressed as a plumber fixing a pipe leak. The titles for the 14 tracks uploaded to SoundCloud have been listed below:
OBVIOUS - LY
Long live my angels - ly, all i do is syrup sip - ly, virginia creeper - ly 2022.
- COUNTRY GRAMMAR - LY
- JORDAN BELFORT - LY 1
DIAMONDS DANCING - LY
Nights - ly 2022, part of the plan ft. 21 savage - lil yachty 2023, yellow - ly.
- STARTING 2 GEEK - LY 2023
- MAKE YOU MINE REFV1 2023 LY
- Sampha Flow - Lil Yachty (2023)
ROAMIN - Lil Yachty & VORY (2021)
Reviewing Lil Yachty's new SoundCloud Records
Each of the songs Yachty uploaded is sonically very different from his older music and highlights his growth as an artist and performer. This can be evidenced by the vast difference between Boat's performance on Part of the plan and Roamin . From love songs to hype music, these tracks encompass everything "new and improved" about the rapper .
Listening to each of these tracks, we find Yachty diving into various themes. Some more notable elements of these songs have been listed below:
- Relationships
Disclaimer: This review is rated explicit. Reader's discretion is advised.
Starting off this list with OBVIOUS - LY, we're introduced to a bouncy synth-fueled track with Yachty effortlessly spinning bars about love, relationships, and luxury that weave through this spacy production .
Boat then follows up with LONG LIVE MY ANGELS - LY , a record that stands out for its pace and Lil Yachty's explosive cadence. A lot of the lyrics highlight his rise to fame and success, with him showing love to all the people he's lost in life.
With a spoken word intro creating a humorous narrative , finding a man jokingly stating, "My cup still dirty, my cup still muddy," is how we're introduced to Yachty's all i do is syrup sip - ly. The production is electric with a taste of Jersey music, especially in its drum progressions, making this track an easy club banger.
Produced by Earl on the beat, Yachty floats over the bouncy high-BPM track titled Virginia Creeper. Throughout the song, Boat highlights the many luxuries of his life, ever since he's been blown up, speaking on themes of excess, relationships, intimacy, and wealth.
COUNTRY GRAMMAR - LY + JORDAN BELFORT - LY 1
We then get COUNTRY GRAMMAR - LY and JORDAN BELFORT - LY 1 which are interesting songs that, although well produced and executed, fail to leave a similar impact when compared to something more sonically extravagant like OBVIOUS - LY .
The final track without a clear year mentioned is DIAMONDS DANCING - LY, which is filled with electric synths and a heavy bass. Yachty's rapid delivery, weaving through themes revolving around relationships, love, and success, are some of the most enjoyable moments on the track.
Lil Boat introduces Nights with a spoken word intro where he explains his issues with people, outside his circle, negatively commenting on his life. The rest of the track speaks to the various struggles he's witnessed, with a thick trap production filled with hard-hitting bass and drum patterns.
Amongst these tracks, a 2016 XXL Freshmen reunion with 21 Savage surfaces on a record titled Part of the plan, which is also the duo's first collaboration since 2018.
The record is an upbeat production that features a lot of Yachty's falsetto vocal performances, leading into 21 Savage's verse, where the rapper highlights his industry status as a way of establishing a large gap between himself and his competition.
Yachty opens with a fast-paced verse on Yellow, which appears to be an uncompleted track as his entire vocal performance lasts less than a minute before we're left with a 2-minute instrumental.
That being said, Yellow's production includes elements of Yachty's best work when compared against the other 14 records.
STARTING 2 GEEK - LY 2023 + MAKE YOU MINE REFV1 2023 LY + Sampha Flow
The next three songs, STARTING 2 GEEK - LY 2023, MAKE YOU MINE REFV1 2023 LY, and Sampha Flow , all appear to have been recorded last year. The songs feature Boat's signature Falsetto vocals, which he curated and finessed for his fifth studio album, Let's Start Here.
The production on these three tracks is impressive given how well Yachty's vocals blend over the bassy, yet transient, trap beats. 'Sampha Flow' is a standout track as well for the impressive sampling work done over Can't Get Close - Sampha, which was released on February 22, 2015.
We then get introduced to the first dated track, taking us back to 2021, where Yachty teamed up with VORY, marking their first official career collaboration on a record titled ROAMIN . Given both of their affiliations with Drake , this collab was long overdue, and both artists came through, delivering stellar performances throughout the 3-and-a-half-minute track.
More recently, Lil Yachty dropped the first EP from his record label, Concrete Boys, titled It's Us Vol. 1, which was distributed to all DSPs via Concrete Rekordz and Quality Control Music on April 5, 2024 . The album featured label signees like Camo!, Draft Day, DC2trill, and KARRAHBOOO.

Lil Yachty is gearing up for the release of his next album, Let’s Start Here , and like much of his career, he’s doing things unconventionally. The 25-year-old shared the cover art earlier this week, which was generated through artificial intelligence.

Lil Yachty Claims Him Liking A Shady Tweet About Kendrick After "Euphoria" Was "An Accident"
“It’s the first time I’m actually speaking on it. It’s a non-rap album,” Lil Boat said. “It’s alternative. It’s sick.” His October 2022 single “ Poland ,” which generated a heavy buzz after leaking online before its official release and subsequent video, displayed the different sounds Yachty was exploring.
Last week, the “Minnesota” rapper put a call out for an all-women band in now-deleted Instagram and Twitter posts. It is unclear whether the tryouts, originally set for Jan. 12 in Lithonia, GA, actually took place and whether the band was meant to contribute to Let’s Start Here or accompany him on tour.
Lil Yachty is riding a wave of momentum after receiving high praise for his contributions to Drake and 21 Savage’s November 2022 collaborative project Her Loss . He had production credits on “BackOutsideBoyz,” “Privileged Rappers,” “Pu**y & Millions,” and “ Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin ,” the last of which the Toronto rapper shared a music video for this week.

Lil Yachty Clowns James Blake for Having Sex in 'Utter Silence'
The rapper joked that Blake gets busy to "cricket sounds."
Lil Yachty couldn't help but clown James Blake after the artist revealed he doesn't play any music in the bedroom when he's having sex.
During their cover story interview for Complex , Yachty and Blake went back and forth asking each other questions. One question that came up was which songs they like to play during romantic moments in the bedroom. From the start, Yachty made it very clear that he doesn't want to think about Blake's sex life.
"I really can't imagine you even having sex and I really don't want to imagine it," Yachty said, as seen in the video linked below, before Blake revealed he doesn't listen to any music while getting busy.
"I could see you having sex in utter silence," Yachty responded, while Blake added jokingly that the room has to be completely quiet. "You probably put on cricket sounds and just go at it to the sound of like, frogs."
View this video on YouTube
Blake explained that he would rather not play any music while having sex because he's someone who pays attention to lyrics. Someone's lyrics can completely distract him and ruin the whole moment.
"You know what bothers me about playing music when you have sex is when you hear a certain lyric, it makes you laugh," he said. "I can hear the lyrics too well. I'm tuned into the lyrics. So I would have to vet every single song on a playlist. Otherwise, it would take me out of it completely."
Lil Yachty and James Blake are preparing to release a joint album titled Bad Cameo , described by the rapper in February as a departure from their usual style.
"I think James has worked with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists," Yachty said on Instagram. "But this project is so left for both of us. Then, aside from the one picture that James posted, which he doesn't have many followers actually, I don't think people know that we know each other exist."

Lil Yachty has revealed the artwork and release date for his forthcoming album, “Let’s Start Here,” set to debut Jan. 27 on Quality Control Music and Motown Records.
Ever the provocateur, the rapper’s new cover art previews an AI-generated image of what seems to be seven executives sitting next to each other in suits. With malformed faces akin to a psychedelic trip down the rabbit hole, the artwork seems unremarkable upon first glance. However, the longer you stare at their faces, they look inhuman, with contorted facial features and warped smiles.

In an interview with Icebox last year , the “ Minnesota ” rapper has expressed that his “new album is a non-rap album,” hence the second chapter that he alludes to in his Instagram post. Yachty explains: “It’s alternative, it’s sick!” After recently collaborating with artists such as Tame Impala, he’s been in the process of creating a “psychedelic alternative project… [with] all live instrumentation.”
Slowly shedding major label support, Yachty now has his own label and creative consultant company, Concrete Records and Concrete Family, respectively. Working closely with Concrete Family, Yachty teamed up with the General Mills cereal brand in 2020 for a limited collaboration with Reese’s Puffs and has an undisclosed sneaker set to be released at a later date. Similar to his 2021 mixtape, “Michigan Boat Boy,” which featured almost solely Detroit artists including Rio Da Yung OG and Babyface Ray, Yachty plans to also release a mixtape with the Concrete Boys collective sometime this year.
