PHOENIX 2 Joins Cecil Wright’s Revised Line Up for the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show

Due to the incredibly quick sale of 95m KISMET, Cecil Wright has revealed its revised line up for the 2023 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show, now featuring Lürssen’s 90m PHOENIX 2. This exciting new addition, alongside other notable vessels, highlights the overall spectacular nature of Cecil Wrights’ fleet as the start of the Monaco Yacht Show draws closer.

Already an exciting week for Cecil Wright with its announcement of the sale of 95m KISMET on Thursday 14th September, the brokerage has released even more exciting news as their revised line up for the Monaco Yacht Show has been released. This new lineup includes the addition of the 90m Lürssen PHOENIX 2 of which they are a joint central agent with Burgess.

Phoenix 2 - 90.1m - Lürssen

Built in 2010, PHOENIX 2 is a yacht which remains in pristine condition, with the opulence of Manhattan art deco exuding from both her interior and exterior design. She has been designed for exquisite indoor and outdoor living, with voluminous spaces across several decks. With a number of sensational features including a beauty salon, movie theatre and spa, she is ideal for both relaxing and entertaining.

The revamped PHOENIX 2 yacht design sails toward the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 . First launched in 2010, the 90-meter PHOENIX 2, built by Lürssen Yachts, was redesigned in 2019 to reflect its current opulent features. At the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, the PHOENIX 2 yacht exudes the Art Deco influences of New York City’s Manhattan, from the Great Gatsby-esque interior to the use of lush-colored palettes such as velvet hues, checkerboard patterns, and designs resembling NYC’s skylines.

Andrew Winch of Winch Design handled the interior and exterior design of the PHOENIX 2 yacht. His ethos revives Art Deco and continues to spread it out across the spacious interior and exterior spaces, even showing up on several decks. The maximized use of spaces enables the PHOENIX 2 yacht to have a movie theatre, a dedicated spa and gym, a beauty salon, a beach club, and an elevator on board, all of which fit into the tailored redesign of the Lürssen-buillt yacht.

Art deco influences inspired by new york’s manhattan

Cecil Wright presents Lürssen Yachts -built PHOENIX 2 at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 , running from September 27th to 30th, which offers private accommodations for 14 guests in one of its seven cabins, styled and designed by Winch Design . Its hull is made of steel, and its superstructure is clad with aluminum. Upon entering, the use of teak wood for the decks is evident. Inside, the yacht’s grand setting presents crystal chandeliers, marble fittings and fixtures, and the sophisticated atmosphere of jazz clubs in the evening.

Outside and on the decks, there is a moment of respite. The design becomes more subdued while retaining a sense of luxury lifestyle, as seen in the use of light-brown wood and neutral-colored furniture. A cushioned sofa surrounds a jacuzzi on the viewing deck, whose open-air lounge allows passengers unobstructed views of the landscape. Specs enthusiasts might appreciate that Cecil Wright’s PHOENIX 2 yacht can cruise at a maximum speed of 18 knots for 4,700 nautical miles.

Come onboard Phoenix 2, worth a cool €125 million

At 90.1 metres in length, Phoenix 2 makes a dominant appearance at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. The Lurssen motor yacht, of Winch Design, is among the top six largest presented this year and is listed for sale with Cecil Wright for an impressive €124.95 million.

Built in 2010, and fresh from a 2019 refit, Phoenix 2 is in pristine condition and dazzling both inside and out.

Built for the late Polish billionaire Jan Kulczyk and handed down to his son Sebastian Kulczyk upon his death in 2015, New York and its skyline were the owner’s inspiration for this yacht’s styling. Motifs of the Empire State Building can be found everywhere, from the backs of bar stools and the carpet, to the wall art and cutlery.

The yacht even has a stainless-steel Phoenix sculpture on the bow in reference to the eagles on the Chrysler building.

Phoenix 2 was the owner’s second Winch-designed yacht, but his first new build. Named Phoenix , the first yacht was built for a different owner who had requested a Parisian art-deco theme. For his first bespoke yacht, Kulczyk chose to surround himself with New York art deco.

High-gloss macassar wood is refreshingly light enough to allow the other main colours – black, cream, gold and burgundy – to create an ambiance of Gatsby glamour and entertainment.

Among the highlights are a dripping crystal chandelier that guides guests down an aluminium spiral staircase which serves four decks, a plush home cinema complete with popcorn machine, a hammam and spa, and a sundeck that features an oval pool with skylights filtering natural light into the lobby below, as well as a separate jacuzzi.

The master suit is accessed via a separate glass spiral staircase from the owner’s private observation lounge and office on the upper deck; the curved edges and polished finishes contrast perfectly with the bold black and white textiles.

A gilt-and-black lacquer Steinway grand piano is centred in the main deck ballroom, and beside it, an exquisite dining table that is overlooked by a swinging six-piece jazz band in custom made gold bas-relief mural.

Every plate, every phoenix-engraved chair, has been made for this purpose. It is opulence at its best.

The superyacht can accommodate 14 guests in seven cabins. Watersports include four colour-coordinated wave runners, diving equipment and kayaks; and there are two touch and go helicopter platforms.

The Monaco Yacht Show runs until Saturday 30 th September.

New York and its skyline were the inspiration for this yacht’s styling, from the Empire State skyscrapers on the bar stools in the sky lounge bar, lit by uplighters reminiscent of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty, to the firebird figurehead that looks as if it may have flown in from the Chrysler Building. Everything, from the door handles to the cutlery, is hand-made, each a work of art in its own right.

From the ballroom, move aft past the full-height windows, circular lounge and onto the aft deck, where a spiral staircase leads up to the upper deck and the emphasis on good times continues. Past the buffet lounge is a winter garden with guest dining in open air or climate control, as conditions dictate, then continue down the boardwalk-style sidedecks to the jacuzzi lounge.

After a night of revelry, head to the bridge deck. Take the rivetted-aluminium spiral staircase or the elevator, which runs from the tank deck, home to the Radio City-inspired cinema with popcorn maker, to the bridge deck, and you’ll find a gym overlooking the aft helipad (there is a second on the foredeck). Sweat it out in the hammam or have a massage in the beauty salon. After that, the sun deck beckons, with its 7m (23ft) oval pool with skylights filtering natural light into the lobby below. Then soak up the sun or snooze in the shade on the sunpads and sun lounges.

To get ashore, take the elevator to the lower deck lobby where one of two 10m (32.8ft) tenders is waiting to take you wherever you want to go. For using an armada of watertoys however, the place to be is the 4m (13.1ft)-deep swim platform, complete with hydraulic bathing steps.

The full-beam owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, is similarly bewitching. Accessed from the main deck or via a glass spiral staircase from the owner’s private observation lounge and office on the upper deck. The circular sweep of the windows and their wraparound views is echoed in the black circle in the carpet and the recessed lighting overhead. A spectacular his-and-hers bathrooms in contrasting marbles features a bath and a steam shower and one of the walk-in wardrobes can be concealed should her new owner wish to operate her commercially.

With a range of 6,000nm and Quantum stabilisers, this impeccably maintained 2,667GT yacht, defies limits on what is possible.

Joining the Gucci-loafer set for a glimpse of superyacht life in Monaco

Sanctions imposed on russian oligarchs don’t seem to have hurt the big-flashy-boat industry.

MONTE CARLO — Welcome aboard at the Monaco Yacht Show, where the world’s superyachts are bought and sold. Warning: If you find the excesses of the 0.01 percent triggering, avert your eyes.

The scene here is like a parking lot crammed with water toys that cost a cool collective $4.3 billion.

The technical term for the size of these pleasure craft is “enormous.” The top class — the megayachts — are now 100 meters in length — that’s 328 feet, more than a football field from goal line to goal line. There are dozens of these boats on order.

There’s also talk of gigayachts to come. Asked what a giga might be, a top broker joked: “That would be a repurposed aircraft carrier.”

Have one helipad? Sad. Why not have two?

Jet Skis? The new must-have toy is a submersible.

There are onboard elevators, naturally, to get between the four, five and six decks. Surfaces are clad in lost forests of teak and mahogany with gleaming stainless steel accents. The deckhands are constantly polishing, rubbing, squeegeeing.

You might think superyacht sales would be super down, what with global inflation, a real estate bust in China, threats of recession, trench warfare in Europe and — dare we say it here? — a planetary climate crisis. Surprise. You would be wrong.

Italy impounds $700 million megayacht linked to Putin

Russian oligarchs have traditionally been big buyers of showy yachts, accounting for an estimated 10 percent of sales. Sanctions and the U.S. Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture have taken a bite. A lot of the Russian boats — including the $700 million megayacht Scheherazade, allegedly owned by Vladimir Putin himself — have been seized.

But the world is bigger than Russia — and there are more billionaires than ever.

“The sanctions didn’t affect the industry as much as you might think,” said Bob Denison , a top American broker with new offices in Monaco. He said the orders for “new builds” in European shipyards that were canceled because the buyers were placed on sanction lists were quickly snapped up by others who weren’t.

The problem with the superyacht market today?

“There’s not enough superyachts,” said Jeremy Roche, one of Denison’s directors.

It costs 600 euros ($635) for a day pass to the Monaco Yacht Show. Many well-heeled lookie-loos have come this week to stroll along the blue-carpeted docks and bump into a champagne tent.

And by well-heeled, we mean it. You must take off your shoes to board boats at the show — even if you are the prince of Monaco. So high-end footwear is strewn in front of the gangways, the ubiquitous Gucci loafers jumbled together with sneakers from Dior and Balenciaga that will set you back about $1,000 per pair.

The number of real buyers — the whales — is harder to calculate. A sales rep estimated there might be one buyer for every 100 staff — that’s exhibitors, brokers, deckhands, hostesses, marketers, cleaners, security.

We got an invitation from a friendly publicist to take a tour of Phoenix 2, built by Lürssen shipyard in northern Germany. She’s 90 meters, or 295 feet, with room for 14 guests in seven cabins, attended by a crew of 28 — and on sale for $132 million.

The boat was designed for the “richest man in Poland,” the late Jan Kulczyk, who wanted the interior to resemble an art deco Manhattan penthouse. There’s an Empire State Building vibe, with a lot of black and white — plus a bourbon bar, lap pool, steam sauna, screening room, gym, wine cave, Steinway piano and duplex owners’ cabin.

Henry Smith, a partner at Cecil Wright brokerage, was showing the boat and happy to discuss the evolving market for superyachts — generally, boats more than 24 meters.

Three decades ago, a 40-meter yacht would have been gigantic, he said. Today, those are considered midsize. Of the roughly 1,200 superyachts on order in boatyards, about two dozen are more than 100 meters.

“Boats just get bigger and bigger, with prices going up and up,” he said. “The future looks bright.”

The pace of sales is down a bit from the records of the pandemic years, when the ultrarich sought out superyachts as safe havens. But Smith said this year is still good.

He and his brokerage recently oversaw the sale of superyacht Kismet , originally built for Pakistani American billionaire Shahid Khan , owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The boat was on the market for just three months and sold for 149 million euros ($157 million).

The buyers keep coming, but they are changing, the brokers say.

Traditionally, they have been multimillionaires — 99 percent male — who sell their businesses in their mid-60s and want some high-end downtime with family and friends. The trend now is younger, with younger families, who struck it rich, or as Smith called it, experienced “a big liquidity event.”

He said, “I took on a chap who made several billion very quickly,” who wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted, except that he really wanted … something big.

At the boat show, we learned that sometimes it’s impossible to accommodate everything you need on your superyacht.

Tenders — used to ferry owners and guests from ship to shore — have a low profile and can be stored aboard in what the yachting community calls “the garage.” Robert Oakley of Falcon Tenders will sell you Miss Wonderly for $2.19 million. It’s powered by a hybrid diesel-electric engine, which gives you one hour on electric in port. “Think limousine,” he said.

But where do you put the sub?

Ian Sheard, the engineering director of Seamagine , maker of private submarines, explained it to us.

“You got the big white boat, the superyacht, right?” Sheard said. “Then you need the toy hauler.”

“The ‘shadow ship’ that follows the superyacht that has all the stuff you can’t fit on the superyacht.”

His submarines cost $4 million to $7 million and can carry two to seven passengers, with over 12,000 drama-free dives so far.

On our tours of superyachts, the guides often spoke of the boats’ “understated glamour.” But the glamour seemed bluntly stated, which was kind of the point?

Some interiors had a look and feel of a neutral-color Four Seasons. Others brought to mind a Vegas suite for a high-roller.

Aboard the $110 million Kensho, the publicist said that the owner (Udo Müller, chief executive of Ströer Media), wanted “a villa at sea.”

She described it as “more Zen, more calm.”

The kind of calm that three onboard bars might provide.

An older, smaller superyacht can be had for as little as $10 million — the price of an upscale home in Los Angeles or London. But if you are not ready to buy, many of the boats are used by their owners for only a few weeks in the high season and are otherwise available for charter.

To rent the Phoenix 2 costs a base price of $1.22 million per week. That doesn’t include fuel, food, drink, taxes, mooring and dock fees or tips — so call it $1.6 million. We had to ask a couple of times about the bill and were told to keep adding zeros.

It’s the fuel that gets you. A 50-meter yacht making a fast run between Monaco and St. Tropez might burn through $35,000 of diesel.

And even if you don’t go anywhere, a mooring ball or a slip at a primo port can cost thousands of dollars a night.

There was some talk at the Monaco Yacht Show about sustainability — about new green fuels, more gentle anchoring — but it was a sideshow.

Smith, the super broker, put it this way. “Green yachting is mostly a fallacy,” he said, adding, “no illusion, these things pollute.” Though you can mitigate the damage a bit.

He suggested anyone chartering a superyacht for a week “go out and plant a lot of trees.”

Monaco Yacht Show 2023: Where Luxury and Innovation Set Sail

In the heart of the French Mediterranean coast, the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 took center stage from September 27 to 30. This four-day event is a beacon of opulence, where the world’s most esteemed players in the international luxury yachting sector congregate to witness a mesmerizing display of the largest and most expensive superyachts in the world.

Now in its 32nd edition, the Monaco Yacht Show continues to draw prospective buyers, designers, builders, suppliers, brokers, and superyacht enthusiasts from across the globe, solidifying its status as the pinnacle of the industry.

Magnificent Display

One of the show’s star attractions this year was the new 50-meter superyacht, Grey, crafted by the renowned Tankoa Yachts. Grey, along with a fleet of 50-meter-plus superyachts, anchored in the bay, making this Monaco Yacht Show a playground for the biggest players in the yachting world.

Johan Pizzardini, head of communications and media for the Monaco Yacht Show, highlighted the significance of this year’s event, stating, “We have 45 yachts that will make their world debut here – new deliveries… Half of the fleet is less than two years old. It’s the peak of the higher segment of the super yachting industry. Something that all of the industry has been waiting for.”

A Shift in Yacht Design

This year’s lineup showcased the evolution of superyacht design, influenced by a younger generation of owners with a fresh perspective. One of the notable vessels, the world’s largest sailing catamaran, the Art Explorer, is designed as a floating museum with a capacity for up to 2,000 visitors per day.

According to Pizzardini, this shift in design represents a change in the mindset of superyacht owners, saying, “Yachting is shifting thanks to the involvement of those new clients that are entering with a new mindset. It’s younger—it’s not the old money generations.”

Sustainability Takes the Stage

The Monaco Yacht Show’s Sustainability Hub returned for its second year, highlighting sustainable solutions and eco-friendly projects. This year, sustainability was a central theme, with many conferences focusing on the issue. Pizzardini noted, “Solutions are more viable and tangible, and the mindset has changed. So it turned from an optional development into the essential component of the building of a yacht today.”

Feadship’s Vision for the Future

Feadship unveiled Project Dunes, a 273-foot-long concept designed to move toward Net-Zero superyachts. This innovative concept combines energy-saving features with efficient technology and a focus on sustainability.

For aesthetic inspiration, the design team drew from undulating sand dunes, creating adaptable, multi-purpose spaces with endless views and a mix of open-plan and intimate areas. The design also prioritizes shaded walk-around decks, providing protection from the elements.

The use of asymmetrical superstructures, circular staircases, and full-height glass windows adds to the uniqueness of this design. Additionally, energy-saving features like the Cool Core Concept and ABB Dynafin™ propulsion ensure reduced energy consumption.

The Future Beckons

As the Monaco Yacht Show 2023 concluded, it left the world wondering which pioneering owner would commit to bringing Project Dunes to life. The show’s platform continues to be a place where vision and innovation merge to create the next wave of superyacht excellence.

High-End Showcase

During the event, several renowned yacht builders and designers presented their latest creations. Mangusta unveiled the sumptuous Oceano 50 and Mangusta GranSport 33. Camper & Nicholsons showcased a fleet of five impeccable yachts, while Heesen Yachts presented the Van Tom, a 50-meter masterpiece conceived by Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini.

Benetti made a grand appearance with two world premieres: the Custom 65M M/Y TRIUMPH and the B.NOW 50M M/Y IRYNA, both epitomizing maritime luxury.

Sialia Yachts, a pioneer in sustainable electric yacht design, introduced the world to the Deep Silence, a Sialia 57, highlighting a future where luxury seamlessly blends with sustainability.

The Monaco Yacht Show offers a glimpse into a world where innovation and extravagance combine, setting the stage for the superyachts of tomorrow.

Walking in Wealthy Footsteps

The Monaco Yacht Show boasts exclusivity even in its boarding process, where guests, including royalty, must remove their shoes before boarding the vessels. The show’s accessibility is reserved for a select few, with one buyer for every 100 staff.

The show tour included a visit to the opulent Phoenix 2, designed for the “richest man in Poland,” the late Jan Kulczyk. This 295-foot vessel, on sale for $132 million, mirrors an art deco Manhattan penthouse, complete with lavish amenities and luxurious cabins.

As the Monaco Yacht Show demonstrates, the world of luxury yachts continues to redefine opulence, sustainability, and innovation, setting the course for the future of yachting.

Lurssen’s 90m/295ft motor yacht ‘Phoenix 2’ has confirmed her attendance at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show .

Luxury yacht Phoenix 2 will be part of the 125-strong fleet of superyachts at the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show 2019.

Launched by Lurssen in 2010, this will be her second time participating in the show after attending at anchor last year.

Phoenix 2 sports exterior and interior design from Winch Design. 

She has proved herself to be a highly popular and versatile charter platform over the years, and plays host to yacht charters in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

Her lavish interiors exude Art Deco glamour, with a selection of well-appointed areas primed for entertaining and relaxing.

Her main salon is home to an impressive grand piano, and she also has a sumptuous cinema room and gym facilities. 

She also has a number of dedicated alfresco areas, including a sundeck with a 7.5 metre pool and a private jacuzzi attached to the master suite.

Entertainment Equipment

• The Audio-Visual system was upgraded in 2016.  The system now comprises of Savant Control System that links all of the system components into one easy to use application.  The application is installed on iPads.  The host server for the system uses an Apple Mac Mini.  
• The system is networked through fibre optic cables from the Cisco core switches in the tank deck AV room to Cisco 48 port switches on each deck level, the back-haul between switches is 20GB. Each of the services to the individual locations is maintained in the tank deck AV room and directed through JAP port switching devices upon request from the iPad controls.  The AV room on the tank deck is kept at a very cold 18°C / 64°F. The individual components that make up the services of the complete system are listed below.
• It is possible to play the same music selection in any guest area whether inside or outside, or conversely have different music playing in different areas. So, adults in the upper salon, Wintergarden and upper deck aft listening to classic rock and the kids on the top deck, bridge deck playing Spotify favourites.

SATELLITE TV SYSTEM

• There is a music server onboard with 10 x available streams in all guest areas.  The music library holds over 16,000 songs of various and varied genres.  This is completely separate to the Radio Station selections.  The Streams are outputted to 3 x autonomic devices which also have the ability to stream Spotify and radio stations from all over the world through the internet connection

• There are two OPPO Blue-Ray DVD players onboard, one in the upper salon and the other in the cinema.  These are there for those moments that the guests come back to the boat with a new DVD and want to watch it immediately.  Of course, if they would prefer for it to be installed on the Kaleidescape, this can be done within about 25 mins

PLAYSTATION 4     

• There are two PlayStation 4 onboard with VR goggles located in the upper salon and cinema for that all-encompassing video game experience

LIGHTING CONTROL     

• The guest area lighting for each area or cabin can be controlled by the iPad through the Savant App

CINEMA     

• The cinema is situation on tank deck level and has 7 x 2-person luxurious loungers stepped up towards the back of the room. There is a Sony 4K protector located in the cinema shining onto a 240cm/94” screen

OUTDOOR CINEMA     

• An outdoor cinema screen and projector can be setup on the sun deck for evening of fresh air cinema.  The screen is viewable from both sides, so those in the pool can watch at the same time as those on the lounges
• The TVs are mostly Samsung LCD screens throughout the guest area and cabins.  The bathroom TV are Aquavision waterproof displays

A new prize for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge to encourage sustainable yachting

TURIN, Italy, April 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A new prize for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge to reward innovative university projects. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, an active Monaco Energy Boat Challenge partner, is adding another dimension to the partnership in launching the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award. The contest is open to universities anywhere in the world and on 6th July will reward the best technological solution that is applicable to yachting in terms of energy efficiency and/or carbon reduction. "We are pleased to initiate this prize to help finance the development of a university’s department with a grant of 25,000 euros. We hope to encourage the winner to go further with its applied research and who knows maybe help those prototypes progress towards a more industrial solution", explains Olivier Wenden, Vice-President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Once the grant has been awarded, the winner will be able to present progress on their project at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge for three years starting in 2025. The prize was officially announced at the Monaco Ocean Week, that was attended by explorers Mike Horn and Bertrand Piccard.

Under the aegis of the collective Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting approach and organised by YCM, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge brings maritime industry pioneers together with visionary engineers around a common goal: to promote alternative propulsion and sustainability in the yachting sector. On the programme, a unique convergence of boats already on or about to enter the market and innovative prototypes. “Every year, students surpass themselves. They are an amazing source of ideas. It is fascinating to see their potential and we are happy to put them in contact with industry players who are a great support for these young engineers,” says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

Entrants to the Solar Class have just confirmed their presence at the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, with 15 teams and 13 nations set to go head to head in this historic category that has supported the event since its launch in 2014. A few weeks before, contestants in the Energy Class finalised their registrations, representing 20 renowned universities. Among these prestigious institutions is the University of Cambridge, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the Politecnico di Milano and Technical University of Berlin to name a few, with 14 nations represented including Canada, Croatia, Peru, Chile and China. All have a chance to meet well-known shipyards like Monaco Marine, Oceanco, Ferretti Group and Sanlorenzo. Perceived by many as one of the key new power sources in the energy transition to a cleaner more sustainable future, hydrogen ticks the boxes of a range of energy needs. As an energy carrier, hydrogen offers a promising alternative to fossil fuels as it can be produced from renewable sources like solar and wind or via the natural gas decarbonisation process. Several contestants have opted for this solution. Of the 21 teams in the Energy Class using electric propulsion, nearly 50% of projects (ten) will be presenting hybrid technologies based on hydrogen, while the other 11 are choosing to store 100% of the energy in Lithium-Ion batteries. Note that during the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in 2019, the Yacht Club de Monaco and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation also co-launched the Monaco Hydrogen Working Group. Thanks to the success of this Working Group’s conference, the Monaco Energy Transition has been co-organiser for the last three years.
