Denver resident Charles Gallagher is the owner of a supreme new yacht named Cakewalk that the Los Angeles Times calls an “assertion of American prowess” in luxury-boat construction.
Among the ship’s amenities are a formal dining room with chandelier, a fireplace, six staterooms for guests, Versailles-patterned woodwork, a baby grand piano, a gym, a Jacuzzi, underwater scooters, and much more (via press release from Derecktor , which built the boat). The yacht, with a range of 5,000 nautical miles—enough to easily cross the Atlantic—will launch from the Long Island Sound.
“This is a go-anywhere boat,” Bill Zinser, the captain of Cakewalk and its crew of 25, tells the Hartford Courant .
The 281-foot, $82 million boat is the largest yacht built in the United States since the 1930s. It ranks number 38 on Power & Motoryacht magazine’s 2010 list of 100 largest yachts. The most grand is the 557-foot Eclipse, built in Germany for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Superyacht Cakewalk debuts at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show
The 85.6m motor yacht Cakewalk made her debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show yesterday, and the editors from Boat International and ShowBoats International were the first members of the media to be invited on board.
Saying, “I never really thought Northern European yards had the corner on quality,” is as close to a brag as we are ever likely to hear out of Paul Derecktor, who heads up the trio of U.S. shipyards that carry his family name. “My father always said, ‘Paul, let the product do the talking.’” At 85.6 meters (281 feet) and 2,998 tons, Lloyd’s Maltese Cross 100A1SSC Yacht classed and MCA LY2 compliant, Cakewalk speaks volumes.
The gleaming blue and white vessel is at once physically imposing and sleekly elegant, the later attribute due to the design magic of Tim Heywood’s exterior lines and the owner’s willingness to give the yacht enough length to be truly graceful. Although the interior layout changed little from the original Heywood drawing of a 75-meter yacht, at the first design review, the owner suggesting stretching the profile to improve her aesthetics and outdoor spaces. The wisdom of this decision is evident at first glance with her proud, even aggressive rake of the bow, the long foredeck and dramatic sheerline, and the spectacular cascade of aft decks.
This is the owner’s fifth Cakewalk and by the numbers she is approximately 70 feet longer with three times the volume of her predecessor launched in 2000 by Feadship’s Royal Van Lent. The impetus for the newest edition was the desire to be able to carry larger tenders and support an even finer level of charter service. In fact, all three of her custom tenders are over 30 feet LOA, but they will be easily launched through the pair of 40 foot by 10 foot hydraulically operated “Boathouse” doors disguised in the aft lower deck port and starboard.
Given the opportunity to climb through the yacht for an entire day, I can attest to the matchless ease with which crew will be able to move about the boat in performance of their duties whether it is in the dedicated engineer’s workshop or in the meal staging areas on every deck, or in the captain’s office where workstations exist for visiting port officers, surveyors or technicians quite separate from the ship’s office and bridge. With every guest (and supernumerary) stateroom on main deck, the accommodations are unprecedented in a yacht of this size: each stateroom AND its ensuite have enormous picture windows. The owner’s deck above encompasses a six-room suite, a theater/lounge and the primary space for alfresco dining. Cakewalk will be available for limited charter beginning with the Caribbean season for $1 million per week.
While the owners publicly stated that they chose to build their yacht in the U.S because they, “firmly believe we could build a world-class yacht in the United States,” it is probably the only place that this yacht could have been constructed in the way the owners and their build captain, Bill Zinzer, wanted it built—a true collaborative effort assembling the best equipment, components, specialists, and craftspeople from all corners of the world. In addition to Heywood, who hails from the U.K., the key members of the design team are Dutch naval architect Hugo van Weiringen and American interior designer Liz Dalton, both of whom had been involved with previous Cakewalk projects. On any given day, the specially selected subcontractors from as far away as Germany, Holland and New Zealand equaled the number of Derecktor’s employees on the build. In microcosm, the Cakewalk project is a metaphor for the American experience.
Cakewalk will feature in the December/January issue of ShowBoats International and the January issue of Boat International .

AQUILA yacht interior
The American design firm Dalton Design worked on the original interior of AQUILA (then CAKEWALK yacht) before she was launched in 2010.
After being sold in 2014, the new owner of AQUILA chose to have the yacht refitted, completely gutting the interior and replacing it with new furnishings.
The new interior design of AQUILA was developed by Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD) and Susan Young Interiors, perfectly marrying the concepts of naval and interior design.
The refit took more than twelve months, and a total of 1,000 workers were involved in the process.
Her interior perfectly combines luxury with style by including dark, wooden elements as well as light marble and silver details.
A contrast is created between the classic design of the common spaces with dark features and the more neutral, black-and-white staterooms.
Strategic pops of color complement this luxurious interior design and make her stand out.
The yacht has space for twelve guests in seven staterooms, including a spacious owner’s suite, four VIP cabins, a twin cabin as well as an additional bunk cabin. Twenty-six crew members find space below the deck in staff accommodation.
AQUILA has a beautiful spa area with a massage room and a dedicated hair salon, as well as a fully equipped gym.
There is also a cinema room with an 85-inch screen (2.15 meters) and plenty of indoor dining or entertaining space for hosting events.
One of the most notable features of AQUILA is her 11.2-meter (36.7 ft) chandelier that stretches across all four levels of the yacht’s interior.
The owner’s suite includes a 60 square meter (645 square foot) private deck with beautiful views over the bow of the yacht.
There are separate his and hers ensuite bathrooms and a connected study that allows for work to be completed even when the yacht is underway.
Specifications
At a length of 85.6 meters (280.11 ft), AQUILA has a 14.3-meter (46.11 ft) beam and a 4.2-meter (13.10 ft) draft.
She weighs a total of 2998 tons and is powered by Diesel MTU engines allowing her to reach top speeds of 18 knots and an average cruising speed of 15 knots.
The AQUILA yacht has been nominated for numerous awards and has won several, including The ShowBoats Design Awards 2010 for tender design, The World Superyacht Awards 2017 for best-refitted yacht, and the International Superyacht Society Awards 2017 for best refit.
AQUILA was constructed by Derecktor shipyards in 2010, making her the largest private superyacht built in the United States since the 1900s.
The exterior of the AQUILA yacht (then CAKEWALK) was initially designed by the award-winning superyacht designer Tim Heywood in 2010.
After the yacht was sold to the owner in 2014, AQUILA underwent an extensive refit that targeted both her interior and exterior.
She was sent to the British shipyard Pendennis for renovation and repairs, including an upgrade of the communications system and an overhaul of the yacht’s superstructure.
A large jacuzzi was added to the forward sundeck, and several new tenders were purchased.
The AQUILA yacht now features an infinity-style swimming pool, four spacious decks, a day bar, and even a dedicated party space complete with a DJ booth and a light show.
The yacht carries an array of water toys and equipment, making her perfect for extended charter trips.
Her large beach club and below-deck storage areas have space for diving equipment, kayaks, sea bobs, waterskis, wakeboards, jet skis, and inflatable water toys.
For land excursions she carries mountain bikes and even scooters, allowing her guests to be flexible when exploring new places.
Her three tenders can comfortably carry passengers from and to land and make up for the lack of a helipad on board ALQUILA.
The largest onboard tender measures 11.7 meters (37.1 ft) and has an impressive maximum speed of 50 knots.
Having been awarded The ShowBoats Design Awards for tender design in 2010, this is one of ALQUILA’s most prominent features.
The AQUILA yacht is worth US $150 million, with annual running costs lying around US $10 to 15 million annually.
The yacht was originally named CAKEWALK but was renamed AQUILA by her current owner. She appears to be available for charter for US $1 million per week, excluding expenses.
The couple has four children and regularly takes the AQUILA yacht on extended trips around the world.
The family owns the NBA team Denver Nuggets, and Kroenke is a major shareholder in the London football club Arsenal.
Stan Kroenke is rumored to be the owner of the 2011 yacht Seanna, which measures 65 meters (213 ft).

The Tim Heywood designed superyacht Cakewalk at 85.6 meters (281 ft) has now been launched by Derecktor Shipyards in the USA – making her the largest private yacht launched to date in America. Motor Yacht Cakewalk is an important luxury yacht launch in many ways being a milestone achievement for Derecktor and their new flagship M/Y Cakewalk is sure to draw much yachting news attention in yacht industry circles during 2010.
From Derecktor Yachts about the Launch of Yacht CAKEWALK: Remember the date; August 8th 2010 was not just another summer Sunday for the United States yachting industry. Instead, at 10:30 a.m. a genuinely momentous event took place. For that moment marked the launch by Derecktor Shipyards of the 85.6 meter (281 ft) motor yacht Cakewalk , the largest yacht (by volume) ever built in the United States.

When the stunning six deck, 2998 gross ton vessel floated off Derecktor’s new 4000 ton dry-dock into the waters of Bridgeport harbour, it was the culmination of an effort never before seen in American yacht building. Several years and many, many thousands of skilled labour hours, along with tireless work from the owners’ team and Derecktor’s project group were needed to make the original vision a remarkable reality.
“Needless to say, as with any project of this scale and sophistication, there were some growing pains along the way, but we think the result speaks for herself” said an obviously pleased Paul Derecktor, President of the Derecktor group of shipyards.” For the first time, an American yard has shown it can equal or better the work of the best European yards. My brother Tom and I, along with everyone at Derecktor are very proud and we thank all the people who made this possible, in particular of course, the Owner and his team.”
Superyacht Cakewalk was designed by Tim Heywood Designs with Naval Architecture by Azure Naval Architecture. Interior design was by Dalton Designs, Inc. Literally dozens of subcontractors from engineering firms to security specialists participated in the project. “We certainly could not have done it without them” commented Gavin Higgins, VP of Business Development at Derecktor. “Some of the world’s most experienced and skilled specialists put their expertise into this job. You cannot successfully build a yacht of this size and complexity with having that sort of talent available.” Reactions from those involved in the project are a mix of pride, satisfaction and in some cases awe at what has been accomplished.
“She is superb” said Designer Tim Heywood. “The workmanship throughout is absolutely first-class, as good as you will find on any yacht in the world. I could not be more pleased for the owner and all involved”. Bill Zinser, Build Captain on Cakewalk yacht and leader of the owners’ team, seemed as proud (and relieved) as a new parent, “She is what we knew she could be all along. It makes all the hard work, all the long days, worth it. We have great owners and we worked with a great group at Derecktor. We can’t wait to show her off to the world.” Notably, Cakewalk was christened for the owners by Carmen Golinski, the Interior Manager on board, indicative of the closeness of the owners and crew.
The Cakewalk yacht will remain at Derecktor for the next few weeks undergoing final outfitting and sea trials. She is scheduled to make her much-awaited debut at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October. “Fittingly, this is Americas leading yacht show and she will be it’s leading lady” quipped Kathy Kennedy, Derecktor’s marketing director.
Industry praise for the, blue hulled yacht Cakewalk had been rolling in even prior to launch. Jonathan Beckett of Burgess commented some months ago that, “I am extremely impressed by the apparent quality of Cakewalk. The attention to detail – from both the technical and aesthetics points of view – I am very impressed indeed. I believe Cakewalk will surprise the north European yacht builders.”
More luxury yacht news of Cakewalk and photography will be brought to you as it comes to hand.

An opulent library with fireplace and grand piano; beautiful dining salon and six spacious guest rooms are located on the main deck. Each guest room is designed to be equivalent in size and amenities and each offers plenty of natural light through oversized windows. The owner’s deck offers generous lounge areas aft deck and dining for up to 14 guests. The owner’s full-beam suite boasts panoramic views and has a private sitting area, office and vestibule. Aquila’s expansive and uncluttered decks include sunbathing areas forward on the bridge deck and lounge areas on the sun deck, both port and starboard. Toys and tender housed in Aquila’s impressive tender bay, nicknamed “The Boathouse”, include custom-built tenders commissioned by the owner: a Limited Edition AquaRiva ‘Centos’; Vikal Custom Limousine and Intrepid Custom 350 Open. Just as Corsair IV was, Cakewalk was built during a depressed economic time.
It paid off: The result is the 281-foot Cakewalk, the largest yacht by volume built on American soil, and the second-largest by length built stateside since the 343-foot Corsair IV in 1930.
