A woman has died after being attacked by a shark on a catamaran that had sailed out into the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands.

The German national, aged 30, tragically lost her life in a Spanish Air Force helicopter as she was being transported to a Gran Canaria hospital.

She was officially pronounced dead after arriving at Doctor Negrin Hospital in the Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas on September 16.

The woman reportedly had her leg bitten off by the shark as she was on a catamaran in international waters 278 miles south-west of Gran Canaria’s airport and around 110 miles east of the city of Dakhla in the disputed territory of Western Sahara, which is currently occupied by Morocco.'

The catamaran she was a crew member of has been named as British-flagged vessel Dalliance Chichester, which had left the Spanish holiday island on September 14, reports the Mirror.

But according to local reports, Moroccan authorities refused to transfer the injured woman to Rabat for emergency medical treatment.

The unnamed woman was pronounced dead yesterday just after 11pm after going into cardiac arrest in the Spanish military chopper. The horror attack is understood to have happened around 4pm the same day.

2019 Leopard 45

catamaran minou 28

Yacht Overview

Broker's Remarks :  MINOU is a well thought out and outfitted 2019 Leopard 45 with an ICW friendly mast and square top mainsail.  The present owner, an experienced boater, put a lot of consideration and thought into this fine yacht.  One of the unique features includes having a split air conditioning system in the starboard hull so that one can run a/c in the cabins off the battery power overnight!  A 4 cabin layout was chosen as this is a sensible arrangement for liveaboard cruising; where one of the cabins can be dedicated as extra storage and work space.  Set up for off grid living with a large solar array, she does have a 6kW Northern Lights generator with less than 100 hours on it.

Available now in Florida, import duty paid, available to all buyers.

Manufacturer Description : Designed for a modern, blue water lifestyle, the Leopard 45 features a raised helm station covered by a hardtop bimini, with direct access from the cockpit and side deck. All sailing lines lead to easily accessible winches, the primary winches being electric, and operated by footswitches.

She’s sleek and nimble, yet comfortable. She incorporates a heritage of Leopards spanning twenty five years of production expertise.

The Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran delivers uncompromised, exceptional build quality throughout, new, sleek styling, a sensible and practical layout, sailing comfort across all sea states, and features innovative technologies and multiple entertainment areas.

"Minou" has been set up by her present owner for sensible, off grid cruising.  This 45 has 11 x 110w solar panels installed for 1210 watts of charging power for the 600 amp hour house battery bank; enough to fully charge the bank by noon.  The solar set up has 4 MPPT controllers to divide it into zones to get maximum charging even if part is shaded by the sail.  The 3k Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger can run one of the 6,000 BTU Air Conditioners in the starboard hull off the battery bank so you can stay cool at anchor without running the genset.  In fact this has worked out so well that the installed Northern Lights 6Kw generator only has about 25 hours on it in a year of sailing the US East Coast.

The Northern Lights 6 kilowatt unit was chosen as it is lighter and more efficient for the loads required on the 45 as the sweet spot of operation is about a 70% load on the geset.  The genset will live longer when it is loaded to 70%. Comes with the new GEM series enclosure is quieter and 23% smaller than the older enclosure, and was made even quieter with a set of isolation mounts outside of the enclosure.  This also means more storage in the cockpit locker for extra cruising gear.

The Freeman 28 is a 28-foot sportfishing hybrid catamaran that was launched by the innovative South Carolina-based yacht-building firm Freeman Boatworks in 2023. The most compact boat in the current Freeman fleet, the 28 combines tournament-ready fishing prowess and the option for cruising in the shallows with rugged outboard engines and the brand’s signature dual-hulled approach to seakeeping. Wider than your typical entry-level fisher at 9-foot and 10-inches, this stunning and sporty bay boat boasts plenty of room to move around and track your prey, along with masses of relaxation space lined with sophisticated hand-stitched seating.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Beam 9' 10"
  • Draft 1' 4"
  • Displacement 6,500 lbs. (Dry)
  • Engine Manufacturer Yamaha or Mercury
  • Fuel Capacity 250 gallons

A chic bow lounge impresses with diamond-stitched upholstery in sedate neutral tones where the whole family can gather and soak up the sun. U-shaped wrap-around seating hugs the bulwark and comes with a pair of backrests to turn this area into two sophisticated chaise-longues, while a pair of forward-facing seats ahead of the helm offer marvelous views out beyond a casting platform with hidden storage. Though this zone is more relaxed there’s still plenty of fish storage and rod-holders on offer for the dedicated angler, while a below-seat cooler keeps your drinks crisp and cold.

Sheltered under a floating hard-top with a radar dome and situated behind wrap-around glazing, the walk-around helm station boasts cutting edge equipment and two comfortable chairs lined in leather-effect upholstery with flip-up armrests and pop-up bolsters for those who like to steer while standing. Utilize Optimus Fly-by-Wire steering and an Optimus 360 Joystick with Setpoint to chart your course, and marvel at the 24-inch Garmin or Simrad touch-screen with bundled instrumentation and a non-glare finish. Also on offer up here is a night vision display, ZipWake trim-tab switches, hand-held iCOM VHF radio, a mounted high-speed compass, digital throttles, plenty of room for your fishing extras and a stereo system linked to the boat’s integrated speakers.

A self-bailing cockpit boasts dual 21 gallon transom livewells with aquarium-style lids, two cooler boxes with a combined 180 quarts of storage, in-sole fish boxes, rocket launchers, outrigger bases, discreet rod storage, Gemlux Bluewater rod-holders and cleats, power-poles, padded coamings, two wash-down hoses and easy access to transom for hauling those record catches aboard.

Powered by a pair of 300HP Mercury Racing outboards, you can expect top speeds to reach an adrenalin-pumping 60 knots at the high-end, while the sweet spot for efficient cruising comes in at around the 35 knot mark. Don’t need to go so quick? Then exchange the Mercury Racing motors for two Mercury Verado outboards that come as standard. A fuel tank holding 250 gallons should keep you out on the water all day long, while a relatively shallow 16-inch draft makes this a perfect sandbar-hopper and estuary cruiser. Constructed using biaxial and triaxial fiberglass with a vinylester resin finish and a closed cell structural core, this hybrid catamaran hull proves stable, speedy and efficient.

The expression, “Two’s company, three’s a crowd,” isn’t heard much around the Pro Sports factory. That’s because with three models of the 28 Pro Kat catamaran now available – Walkaround, Sport Cuddy and Center Console – there’s one to satisfy most every boater.

“Anyone interested in a 28- to 29-foot conventional boat will be impressed with the Pro Kat,” explains Pro Sports president Mike Robinson. “It’s a hands-down winner for stability, and it lends itself to serious fishing and diving because of its range, ride and handling.”

catamaran minou 28

All three models are based on the same planing hull. Reverse chines on each sponson provide increased lift for stability, fuel efficiency and a drier ride, as we discovered during choppy conditions in Alabama’s Mobile Bay. The Pro Kat sliced through the waves and tracked exceptionally well. Straight runs allowed nearly effortless steering with the Sea Star hydraulic system, while on gradual turns the boat would follow the heading without hesitation or drift. We did encounter some tunnel slap in a head sea, but were able to eliminate it by angling slightly into the waves.

In addition to stability, our test ride demonstrated the Pro Kat’s other positive performance characteristics. It stays abeam of the seas on a drift, offering unhindered fishing from either side, and the effect of whitewater funneling tightly between the sponsons and outboards, combined with the gurgling noise it produces, is sure to raise fish when trolling.

Incredible Range

And speaking of trolling, the Pro Kat will let you maximize your fishing time, according to Pro Sports’s performance data. A Sport Cuddy rigged with twin 200 Mercury OptiMax outboards is capable of 51.9 mph at a wide-open 5800 rpm. Throttle back to 4000 rpm for a cruising speed of 39.1 mph and 19.6 gph, or save even more gas by dropping to 3200 rpm (28 mph and 12.6 gph). With a fuel capacity of 238 gallons, that translates into a 474-mile range at cruise.

catamaran minou 28

Every model of the 28 Pro Kat features plenty of standard angling amenities. Topping the list are a 40-gallon, oval bait well with macerator pump and cutting-board top; two large, insulated fishboxes; molded rod racks, and a molded backing plate in the cockpit sole for mounting a fighting chair. Add the 28’s immense cockpit, padded coaming bolsters, rod holders and ample storage for tackle and gear, and you’ve got a very versatile fishing machine.

Removable transom bench seats and forward padded seating complement the large helm leaning post and console. The console (with standard stainless steering wheel) is large enough to accommodate a typical electronics package, while the carpeted interior offers access, plus additional storage and room for an optional head. A handy console T-top/radio box combo is also available as an option.

The center-console model has wraparound seating in the bow, along with a convenient, lockable storage area that’ll easily handle rods and gear for overnight stays in a marina. The cuddy version, on the other hand, uses that same space for a small yet cozy cabin. The finished space features twin padded berths with storage below. All models in the 28 Pro Kat line come equipped with stainless bow railings, an anchor roller with hawse pipe, and a lifetime hull warranty against rot.

With very affordable price tags for boats of this size, no matter which model of the 28 Pro Kat you choose it’s sure to draw a crowd – of admirers, that is.

2023 Freeman 28 Review

catamaran minou 28

If you are someone who seeks an offshore fishing adventure with a desire to have a boat that not only meets your needs but is an extension of your adventure, then the 2023 Freeman 28 may be the perfect boat for you.

This new build has been manufactured with the best and highest-quality parts to ensure that your boat not only lasts but will provide you with hours of fun on the water. For over a decade, Freeman Boatworks has been producing their coveted fishing boats and their fan base is loyal.

Freeman Boatworks was founded in the year 2007 by Billy Freeman, hence the name. The company prides itself on making sure that all boats are built to perform and crank up the speed while maximizing fuel efficiency so that you can focus on fishing and not how much you put into the tank.

The Freeman 28 has been dubbed as a boat that is dependable and can get you to more of the places you actually want to go. This means no more sacrifices when it comes to your favorite fishing spot.

Wondering if the new 2023 Freeman 28 is the right fishing boat for you? You are in the right place! Below, we will dive into a review of what the Freeman 28 has to offer you. We are confident that you will find this boat quite desirable.

Interior and Accessories

When you first lay eyes on the Freeman 28, you may be instantly shocked – in a good way. The boat is absolutely ready to take you out on your fishing adventure and is properly equipped to do so at the same time.

The body of the Freeman 28 is sleek yet pretty aggressive looking for a fishing boat. You can expect this boat to take off in the water and you will look like a king doing so.

One of the things that many people complain about with other fishing boats is that they do not have some of the creature comforts that they want. The Freeman 28 does not skimp when it comes to comfort. You can expect to sit down in comfortable seating that feels luxurious and holds up to the use that you plan to put it through.

At the front of the boat, you will find seating options for your guests, which include two chairs and a lounger. The lounger is wrapped around the front of the boat for U-shaped seating which ensures your guests are always comfortable and never cramped.

The captain can look forward to a nice cockpit area that is outfitted just for him/her. This area includes a captain’s chair and a first mate’s chair, both of which are plush and include armrests. The console is large and ready for you to look at and control your boat. You will find the steering wheel is not too oversized and placed comfortably so that you do not have to strain to reach or maneuver your boat around on the water. All gears, switches, lights, and information about the boat is easily accessed right from the cockpit.

As we mentioned, this boat is made for your upcoming fishing excursion, and you will find plenty of storage on the boat for your dry items and safety gear. You will also find plenty of live wells and bait wells on board as well.

Standard storage and fishing features include:

  • Transom livewell
  • Bow storage box
  • Aft storage
  • Aft fish box
  • Midship storage box
  • Floor livewell

One of the things that Freeman Boatworks did not forget about is where your fishing rods will go. Throughout the boat, you will find rod holders and a rod storage box.

At the console and at the leaning post, you will find a cooler box where you can keep your cold items, refreshments, and drinks.

If you are looking for some additional upgrades to your boat, the Freeman 28 allows you to customize yours a bit. Below, you will find some of the optional upgrades you can choose from:

  • Night vision camera
  • Performance engines
  • Curved light bar
  • Underwater lights

The 2023 Freeman 28 comes standard with twin Mercury 300 HP Mercury Verado engines. The Verado line of engines is well-known for their performance, design, and power. They are best suited for fishing boats, so it makes sense that they would come standard on the Freeman 28.

These engines are going to get you where you want to go both quickly and efficiently. You will find the sweet spot for a typical cruise is 40 miles per hour at 2.0 miles per gallon.

  • Underwater lights upgrade to enhance the look of the boat on the water
  • Multiple storage options across the boat
  • Comfortable and plush seating for captain and passengers
  • Modest price point

Pricing and Specifications

Pricing information for the 2023 Freeman 28 is not readily available or listed on the manufacturer’s website. However, research shows that the MSRP for this boat starts somewhere in the $300,000s. Of course, the actual cost of your Freeman 28 will depend on any upgrades and additional features you choose. If you are interested in a Freeman 28, it is recommended that you speak with an authorized dealer to determine the exact cost.

2023 Freeman 28 Specifications

Jacques. Jacques

pierre 2 the minimalist
