Phuket Race Week is BACK!
The regatta has been touted as ‘a huge success’ drawing world class sailors from throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The eagerly awaited first international regatta since COVID chaos subsided, Phuket Race Week 2022 drew over 200 sailors and their families from throughout the region to enjoy all the pomp, vigor and of course, competitive racing for which the regatta is renown.
Byron Jones, event manager was commended by competitors on the Saturday night prize-giving for his commitment to hosting the event in recent years despite much disruption from COVID restrictions. While Phuket Race Week 2022 was still a shadow of it’s previous self, the enthusiasm within the crowd to see the event return to it’s former glory was palpable.
The challenging weather of the Phuket wet season didn’t fail to test the sailors, with everything being offered up by the Gods, ranging from ‘champagne racing’ in 20 knots and clear skies though to a mere zephyr and a smattering of rain.
A big thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors who continue to make these world class events possible, putting Phuket back at the forefront, as a premier destination for sailing.
Established stalwarts from the last couple of years including John Newnham on Twin Sharks & Hans Rahmann on Voodoo battled it out on the race course alongside the previously travel restricted owners of Blue Nose & Surf Patrol, revelling in the near perfect conditions. There was of course, much discussion, and hope that the remaining Fireflies, currently dormant in Phuket, may be offered a new lease of life and soon join the competitive one design fleet.
In the larger multihulls, Warwick Downes on Bonza had ‘a bit on’ facing off against Dan Fidock’s Parabellum – an Extreme 40 fresh off a ship from Brisbane and complete with an experienced core crew from Australia. Meanwhile, the stunning Stealths from Asia Catamarans, under handicap, offered comfortable performance sailing in the mixed fleet.
“It’s fantastic to see new boats and fresh faces again here in Phuket, but we’re going to have to find another gear if we want to stay competitive against Dan’s Extreme 40! ”
James Haste , Crew Manager of Bonza
Monohulls- Racing
The racing fleet was dominated (wholly) by the Australians; with the return of Ray Robert’s Team Hollywood TP52 from storage in Malaysia taking line honours easily in every race. Under handicap though, Alright & Let’s Get It On didn’t allow Team Hollywood to take all the glory with a well-respected race win each.
Monohulls- Cruising
Cultural diversity abounds in the cruising fleet, with six different nationalities on the race course. However, overall Stuart Williamson (GBR)on Endeavor of Whitby & Niels Dgenkole (DEN)on Pheonix had the edge going into the final day.
Off the water
Cape Panwa Hotel, hosted the four-day event and offered the perfect, relaxed ambiance for an action-packed social calendar of events boosting crew morale and comradery throughout the regatta. Many sailors chose to bring their families, and extend their trips beyond the 4-day regatta, enjoying some much-needed winter sun, Thai hospitality and quality downtime far removed from the cooler southern climes.
“This regatta in particular, with Cape Panwa Hotel as a sponsor creates a great base and builds a community spirit for Phuket Race Week. It’s a fantastic venue, and creates an experiential destination for the whole family to enjoy – superb racing on the water and a little bit of luxury to relax and rewind off the water.”
Toby Wharton, Trimmer, SY Voodoo.
Looking forward
Following a two-year hiatus of international regattas and with some reluctance to travel remaining, this regatta has overwhelmingly installed fresh confidence in sailors and locals alike. The Phuket Race Week 2022 has proved that Thailand is well deserving in it’s place as one of the primary sail racing destinations in SE Asia. There can be no doubt that the future is very, very bright for world class, competitive sailing in Thailand.
As a final note, the increasingly vociferous murmurs from amongst the sailors in support and anticipation of the hasty revival of the Kings Cup and Raja Muda regattas were hard to ignore….

Phuket is unique in Thailand as being the only location in the country to host multiple regattas. In addition to the local regattas organized by the island’s yacht clubs Phuket is home to 4 internationally recognized regattas that draw in participants from all around the world. Its tranquil waters with steady winds in the high season are in great contrast to the monsoon winds that make the Multi Hull Regatta and Phuket Race Week in July such a challenge.
A large base of yacht charter companies in Phuket means that there are plenty of opportunities for crews of various levels of experience to charter boats to compete in the regattas, some of which have a very good chance of appearing on the podium and even winning their class.
Phuket also hosts an annual Boat show, usually in March, known as the Phuket Boat Show, or PIMEX and Asia’s first Superyacht Rendezvous.

Phuket Raceweek wraps up
The 19th Phuket Raceweek came to a close today, and unfortunately, the weather gods who had been so kind the first three days of the regatta did not come out to play today, so racing was cancelled. Still, PRO Simon James could get in six races for every class, two on each day, so the skippers were allowed to drop their worst performance on the water.
Ray Roberts Team Hollywood landed back in Thailand with a bang capturing the four-boat IRC Zero class with some nifty sailing and manoeuvring on the water. James Bury and Craig Nicholls’ Alright came second in the class, Garry Holt’s Let’s Get it On placed third, and the Douglas/Kettlebey Ramrod settled for fourth. All four boats were crewed by sailors from Australia who flew up specifically to sail in the regatta.
Alright, then took top prize in the IRC 1 class. Garry Holt bought Jessandra II just before the regatta, renamed it Let’s Get it On and sailed it to a second-place finish. Ramrod had trouble with its sails and never really got on track, taking third overall in the three-boat class.
The OMR Racing Multiclass saw Joel Berg helm Dan Fidock’s Extreme 40 Parabellum to line honours in each race, winning each race along the way, drawing the admiration of everyone involved. Warwick Downes’ Bonza placed second in the class, followed by Alan Carwardine’s Saffron and Glywn Rowlands Twister 2. By the way, Mr Carwardine and Asia Catamarans were very kind enough to sponsor the third day’s racing and prize-giving.
John Newnham’s Twin Sharks captured the four-boat Firefly 850 Sport boat class win again, edging out rival Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo with Ray Waldron’s Surf Patrol and George Eddings Blue Nose coming in third and fourth place, respectively, in the four-boat class.
The IRC Cruising division was the tightest battle in the regatta as APW Endeavour of Whitby and Phoenix finished tied on points atop the leader board with seven points each. The tiebreaking formula is thus: first, it’s the highest number of wins, then it’s the highest number of second-place finishes, followed by the highest number of third-place showings. If they are still even after that — and they were — it boils down to who had the highest placing in the last race, and APW Endeavour of Whitby did.
Toshiro Furuta’s Japanese crew on Sakura came third in the class, followed by Kirill Stashevsky’s crew on Agata. Fred Haes’ Venture finished fifth, and Kantus Bride, the only all-Thai entry in the regatta, helmed by Kampon Sutara, was sixth.
Tristan Hamilton’s Pulse Grey swept every race (six in a row) to take the Pulse 600 class, with Paul “Flatty” Baker skippering Pulse Yellow, putting up a valiant fight but unable to cross the finish line first.
The founders of Phuket Raceweek, Andy Dowden and Grenville Fordham were on hand for the third night’s ceremony presenting digital and printed versions of their chart book Southeast Asia Pilot to the class winners on the day. They set up the regatta in July 2004 as no other regional regatta sailed during the summer to take advantage of the good winds the prevailing southwest monsoon brings with it.
The closing party and final series prize giving were staged at the host Cape Panwa Hotel. The guest of honour was from Navy 3 Area Command Vice Admiral Sompong Nakthong, who presented the Final Series Awards
Twenty boats, divided over six classes, sailed in the event with 200 sailors from 20 countries. Organizer Byron Jones has set the dates for the twentieth Phuket Raceweek Regatta from June 28th-July 2nd, 2023.
It wasn’t until the first week of May this year that Byron & Rung Jones were given the go-ahead to stage the regatta — less than eight weeks ago.
It was a tremendous credit to them and the Cape Panwa Hotel staff for pulling off the event so well.

The 19th Phuket Raceweek came to a close yesterday, as the old saying goes "not with a bang, but a whimper". But never mind - when the regatta calendar has been minced as badly as it was over the last couple of years, three days of good racing in beautiful surroundings was more than enough to bring out the smiles.
