Sailing Lake Erie from Fairport Harbor, Ohio
What are you interested in?
We offer two different programs, introduction to sailing and charters. The lessons consist of two different four-hour sessions, the first one is at the dock, and the second is out to sea.
Our season runs from mid-June to mid-October (perhaps longer depending on weather).
We always have a weather eye and keep your safety first and foremost in mind.
Captain Jim does a great job of accommodating the guests' needs, making them feel comfortable and safe while allowing everyone a chance to take the wheel or participate in the sailing experience.
Beginning with a warm greeting, lessons began onshore, then moved onboard; getting everyone accustomed to the procedures, amenities, and expectations before setting sail, we had a fun time.
Carl T, Chardon, Ohio
We are ready to host you from mid-June until the end of October.

Yes, Lake Erie is a great place for sailing in Ohio. Lake Erie is the fourth-largest Great Lake and boasts over 9,000 square miles of water. The lake is known for its shallow depths and can produce choppy waters during strong winds, making it a challenging but exciting destination for sailors. The lake is also surrounded by numerous marinas and ports, providing easy access to the water and plenty of opportunities for sailing adventures. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sailor, Lake Erie offers a unique and rewarding sailing experience with its beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife.
Yes, ships do sail on Lake Erie. As one of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is a major shipping route for cargo vessels and freighters carrying goods between the United States and Canada. The lake is also home to many recreational boaters, including sailors, power boaters, and anglers. While larger commercial vessels are common on Lake Erie, they generally stick to the deeper waters of the lake and are not typically seen in smaller ports or marinas.
When it comes to choosing a boat for Lake Erie, there are a few factors to consider. The lake is known for its choppy waters and unpredictable weather, so it’s important to choose a boat that can handle these conditions. Generally, boats that are at least 20 feet long and have a deep-V hull are recommended for Lake Erie, as they can handle the rougher water conditions. Additionally, boats with a keel or centerboard can help with stability and maneuverability in choppy waters.
Some popular types of boats for sailing on Lake Erie include keelboats, such as the Catalina 22 or 25, and centerboard boats, such as the J/24 or Precision 23. Powerboats, such as fishing boats or cruisers, are also popular on Lake Erie, as they offer speed and convenience for exploring the lake. Ultimately, the best boat for Lake Erie will depend on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the type of boating or sailing you plan to do.

"My wife and I took a cruise with Captain Scott on a beautiful warm fall evening. His sailing expertise and knowledge of Cleveland, made it truly an outstanding experience. I would highly recommend a trip with Scott – whether you have never been on a sailboat, or are an experienced sailor.”
— Jay and Susanne Apple
"The girls and I want to thank you again for probably the absolute best part of our 72 hours in Cleveland! The sail (especially for me having never before been on a sail boat) was just magical and I felt safe the entire time!! You guys were so much fun to be around and when (not if!) we come back to CLE we will book again. And the topper was pulling out that Rod Stewart sailing song—we were still exclaiming about it in the car on the way home from the airport last night!

Hueston Sailing Association (HSA) has many activities to promote the sport of sailing in Southwestern Ohio. Regular races fine tune your sailing skills to a level that cannot be achieved with casual sailing. HSA also offers a few Introduction to Sailing days throughout the season. This is a chance for you to take sailing lessons and learn to sail. We are also offer a Learn to Sail program . This provides one-on-one training. Click here for more information . There are enough social opportunities to allow you to get to know your fellow sailors and share sea stories, yet not so many as to overwhelm you. We have pot lucks near the Holiday Series weekends and a brunch in July. Hueston Sailing Association is based on Acton Lake, in Hueston Woods State Park , near Miami University and Oxford, Ohio. Hueston Woods is an easy and scenic drive from Cincinnati or Dayton. Acton Lake is ideal for small boat sailing for several reasons. Power boats are limited to no wake speed, which means that sailors can enjoy their sport without the interference of wakes from jet skis or skiers. The marina area has spacious set up areas for prepping your boat, and excellent launch facilities. A paved dry storage lot is available for those who like to keep their boat at the lake out of the water, or some prefer to rent a slip and keep their boat on the water. The State Park has facilities for social gatherings year round. This environment means the club does not need to maintain its own facilities, so the cost of membership is very low. Sailboat racing is the core activity of HSA. Races are held Sunday afternoons late April to mid-October, with a 1:30 p.m. start for the first fleet. Currently there are three fleets: Hobies, Y-Flyer, Sunfish/Handicap (any boat that sails). Racing makes a great family activity, with many husband-wife or parent-child teams. Sailing lessons at strictly sail & kayak.
This safe introduction to sailing is designed for the first time sailor. Each class consists of a classroom session on a Wednesday evening 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as well as an on-the-water sailing session on either a Saturday or Sunday. Our teaching boat is a Montego 25, cabin-class keel boat, similar to the type one might buy as their first boat. Under the guidance and supervision of our veteran instructors, each student is given the opportunity to steer the boat and trim the sails. Your first time at the tiller is an experience you will never forget.
The classroom ‘sailing school’ session is approximately three hours and is held at our main Strictly Sail & Kayak location in Blue Ash, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. This will cover instruction on sailing theory, safety, terminology and rigging. The on-the-water class will be held at Brookville Lake in Indiana and will also last about three hours. This second session will be hands-on with the instructor on board.
Instructor daryl clark, sharing his enthusiasm for sailing with students and fellow sailors..
Our instructor, Daryl Clark, is a seasoned sailor who began his sailing experience on cruise excursions to the local southwest Ohio and Indiana lakes with his dad and brother. Sailing has been one of his passions since his high school days many years ago. During his college years, he started racing with the Miami University Sailing Club. While at Miami of Ohio, he also began teaching sailing. We are proud to have him on the crew at Strictly Sail & Kayak.

Train Derailment-Ohio FILE - In this photo taken with a drone, portions of a Norfolk Southern freight train that derailed the previous night in East Palestine, Ohio, remain on fire at mid-day, Feb. 4, 2023. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File) (Gene J. Puskar/AP)
Very few people who live near the East Palestine, Ohio , train derailment opted out of a $600 million class action settlement despite residents' reservations about whether the deal offers enough, so lawyers argue the agreement should be approved later this month.
The lawyers who negotiated the deal with Norfolk Southern on behalf of everyone affected by the disastrous February 2023 derailment said only 370 households and 47 businesses in the 20-mile (32-kilometer) radius around the derailment opted out of the property damage payments.
That includes only 82 opt-outs from households within 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) of the crash who were promised $70,000 for property damage. People who lived at the outer edge of the area will only receive a few hundred dollars if a federal judge approves the settlement after a Sept. 25 hearing.
Altogether, 54,925 claims had been filed as of last week, and that number should be close to the final total because there was an Aug. 22 deadline to submit forms.
“It is deeply satisfying that this community overwhelmingly supports this settlement," the plaintiffs' lawyers said in a statement. “This result would not have been possible without their resolve and determination to hold Norfolk Southern accountable.”
A separate payment of up to $25,000 for personal injuries was more controversial because residents were required to give up any right to sue in the future if they develop cancer or other serious ailments. But some 97% of East Palestine residents still signed onto that.
Some residents have complained that even though the lawyers have said this settlement is bigger than any other derailment settlement, the payments still aren't enough to compensate them for all their suffering. Many people don't like the fact that aid payments they have received from the railroad will be deducted from any settlement they ultimately receive.
One of the key concerns for those objecting to the deal is that the contamination left behind after hazardous chemicals spilled and burned after the train crash could be worse than they know. That's why they filed a motion asking the judge to order the lawyers to release all the tests their expert did in the community.
The plaintiff's lawyers said in their motion that they can't release those tests because it would violate the terms of the settlement. They tried to reassure the community that they did extensive research to make sure the settlement was adequate by interviewing some 70 people and reviewing nearly 1.35 million pages of documents.
A separate federal settlement between the government and the railroad will ensure that Norfolk Southern pays for the cleanup that is still ongoing and for long-term medical monitoring of residents and tests of groundwater.
The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed early this summer that the derailment was caused by an overheated wheel bearing that wasn't caught in time by trackside detectors. Investigators also said they determined that officials never needed to blow open five tank cars containing vinyl chloride and burn the plastic ingredient because those tank cars weren't going to explode.
The plaintiffs' lawyers said that because of their extensive investigation they weren't surprised by anything that came out at the NTSB hearing in June.
