What are the benefits of buying a boat in Mexico?

There are many reasons to buy your boat in paradise!

Boats in Mexico are better equipped and are proven cruising vessels. They have much more gear than many of their counterparts in the US that are outfitted only for day sailing. Compare the equipment lists of our boats with those of many of our US or Canadian equivalents and see that we bring you better value.

Purchasing a vessel in Mexico is an offshore purchase and may yield tax advantages. We are not in the tax business so we suggest you contact professionals in that area to ensure that you understand your obligations which can vary by state and country.

Our crew is made up of boat owners who have cruised the US, Canada and the west coast of Mexico. We have lived the cruising dream and have chosen to stay in our adopted country. We have gained first-hand knowledge of what it takes to outfit and maintain a boat for living aboard, coastal cruising, offshore sailing, day sailing, or fishing.

Can I get a survey done in Mexico?

YES! We work with several surveyors in each area, many of whom are also US or Canadian nationals. We work with people that have done surveys for clients before, so we know the quality of their work. If you are buying a vessel, the surveyor you choose will be working for you, ensuring that you get a vessel that has been properly inspected from bow to stern. Our certified surveyors work with US, Canadian and European insurance carriers on a regular basis. Current survey rates range from $10 to $14 per foot.  E-mail us for more details.

How does the boat-buying process work in Mexico?

If you see a boat that interests you,  contact us and let us know! Each boat has an ‘Inquire About This Boat’ button that will connect you directly with us so that you may ask questions about each boat. We will respond quickly to your inquiries and provide you with detailed information and assessments of the boats we have in inventory. Once you are ready to make an offer, we will work with you to draw up an “Offer to Purchase & Sales Agreement” which details the conditions and any contingencies of the purchase. Our brokers will work with you and the seller to come to a mutually acceptable price and terms. Upon the offer being accepted by the seller, the 10% deposit must be submitted to the title company noted below in Washington State. This amount is held in your name in a trust account.

My offer was accepted! What's next?

Once your offer is accepted, you will have a set period of time to complete the purchase transaction, normally 10 to 30 days. This period is used to satisfy any contingencies such as your personal inspection, the survey and the sea trial. Once all the contingencies have been satisfied, closing and documentation instructions are sent to Pacific Maritime Title (PMT) or Marine Documentation Service, Inc (MDSI). You will receive your new documentation from the US Coast Guard or Canada Ships Registry. Proper papers will be provided if registering under another flag. In the unlikely event that the contingencies are not met, the deposit in trust is returned to you.

Okay, I'm ready to come to Mexico. Where do I stay?

We are always happy to help with your accommodations and can provide you recommendations and directions on getting here by either air, land or sea. Let us know your preferences and we will make arrangements with our local contacts. We can even give you information on other “must see and do” activities in our home cities.

Can I get work done on my boat in Mexico?

Absolutely! La Paz, Mazatlán, San Carlos and Puerto Vallarta are very large cruising communities with multiple yards and marinas. Each city has virtually all the marine-related services and supplies that a boater would want – boat yards, marinas, chandleries and a wide range of marine professionals such as sailmakers, riggers, refrigeration and diesel mechanics, canvas & upholstery, boat maintenance workers. etc. Send us an e-mail at  [email protected]  and we will be happy to provide more information on the services that we recommend to our clients.

How do you handle titling and documentation service?

We use the services of Anacortes Marine Documentation (Anacortes, WA). They are the nation’s foremost providers of vessel documentation, preferred mortgage, state titling, and closing services for owners, buyers, brokers, dealers, lenders and attorneys. They also work with clients to prepare documents for registration outside of the US and Canada. They have provided our clients with excellent service for years.

How hard is it to find a slip for my boat?

There are slips readily available in all of our locations. Unlike many parts of the U.S. or Canada where slips are in short supply, there is availability throughout most of the year. During peak season when there are multiple events at the same time, such as regattas, fishing tournaments, or the seasonal launch and haul-out in the fall and spring, there may be a wait of a few days before you get the slip of your choice. In addition, storage of your boat “on the hard” can also be arranged. Send us an e-mail at  [email protected]  or give us a call. If you need more details and we can put you in touch with our local marina managers.

I have more questions. Can you help?

We respond quickly and courteously to all inquiries. Please  give us a call  or  email us  and we’ll be happy to help you out.

Now Co-Brokering with La Paz Cruisier Supply & Brokerage, offering my clients YachtWorld exposure if they wish.

I am Canadian and a Mexican Residente Permanente. I've had a boat in Mexico since 2012, and have been brokering yachts in San Carlos since 2016.

Retired from a career in aviation as certified aerospace machinist, aircraft mechanic and pilot. I am on my sixth boat now, four on the sea and two on the east coast; four sailboats and two trawlers. Managed and worked on repairs and refits for vessels up to fifty feet.

I learned yacht brokerage working with both local yacht sales, the most being with the best; Don and Brisa Brame

Todays Yacht Buyer

  • People researching and buying in todays market are internet savvy in their searches. Expensive advertising on commercial yacht sale websites and trade magazines are obsolete. Do your research online and Google to your savings. There is a lot of work brokering your boat or yacht here in Mexico, and I'm here to make it happen.
  •   I am NOT a Gypsy Broker and there are a couple of them floating around, no pun intended. You can't service a client's vessel from a Facebook Group.

Reduced brokerage

Seller pays only 6%

  • Aggressive advertising directed at the current internet savvy prospective yacht purchaser.
  • I operate a virtual office, as sales are made on the yacht, not in an office and not on Facebook. I only have two mouths to feed, me and Koko.
  • I don't stage boats I list, as I want you to see every detail as you will find the boat when you arrive here. You can also learn a great deal about it's maintenance from how it was stored/left and smells. Was the owner planning to continue cruising, or did they just walk or pass away.
  • NEW:  Co-Brokerage with La Paz Cruiser Supply available for clients wanting YachtWorld exposure with associated commission rates.

Cortez Yacht Sales offers the details of all vessels in good faith, but cannot guarantee or warrant the accuracy of this information nor warrant the condition of the vessel. A buyer should instruct their agents, or surveyor to investigate such details as the buyer desires validated. This vessel is offered subject to prior sale, price change, or withdrawal without notice. Financial and titling transactions are conducted in the US or Canada by licensed agents. An offshore purchase means great savings and the process is more hassle free than you may think!

Sailing in Mexico

When we think of sailing in Mexico, we immediately think of the vast potential for exploration, discovery, and adventure. From the wide expanse of the Mexican Gulf on one side, to the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California on the other, the choice for boating lovers is endless.

From the wide expanse of the Mexican Gulf on one side, to the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California on the other, the choice for boating lovers is endless. The perfect sailing conditions in Mexico continue to attract sailors, tourists, and holidaymakers year after year, during every season, especially in areas such as Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Puerto Vallarta. There is always sunshine to be found, no matter where you take your yacht charter in Mexico , and every harbor offers new sights and cultures to enjoy.

Mexico is surrounded by three different oceans, all of which have their own distinct personality and characteristics in the explorer’s imagination. Its curved east coast is bordered by the large ocean basin of the Gulf of Mexico, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Gulf of Mexico also borders the US southeast coast, making the east coast of this popular sailing destination accessible by boat from locations such as Florida and Texas. This ocean is rich with biodiversity including seabirds, fish, dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.

To the west, we have the Gulf of California, which separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland, and spills into the Pacific Ocean. The Gulf of California stretches for over 900 miles, and offers sailors a completely different experience to sailing on the east coast of Mexico. The marine life along the Baja Peninsula makes this area of the Mexican coast the most important fisheries region in Mexico, and the perfect place to arrange a boat rental. The remainder of the west coast is bordered by the Pacific Ocean - the planet’s largest body of water, therefore offering plentiful sailing opportunities on this side of Mexico.

Mexico is one of the world’s top boating destinations. Its popularity is undisputed, and evident from the vast amounts of harbors which dot the coastline, and the vast number of tourists who visit the country every year. Due to its proximity to the United States, Mexico is the ideal vacation destination for residents from all over the US - not just from the Southeast coast of Florida! It is estimated that nearly 40 million tourists now visit Mexico each year, with a vast majority flocking to the numerous beaches and sparkling coastlines to escape the harsher climates.

Sailing in Mexico is one of the most popular activities when visiting the country. A great variety of sailboat charters and yacht rentals are available in every major coastal town, and tourists never have to search far for the perfect boat to rent for a day or for a week. Some of the most popular states for boat rentals in Mexico are Oaxaca, Yucatan, Baja California Sur, and Nayarit.

It’s no secret that Mexico enjoys year-round sunshine. Because the country is so huge, and its coastline so spread out, there will always be a climate to suit your holiday and sailing needs at any time of the year. Whether you thrive in the humidity, or prefer basking on your catamaran in the dry heat, you can organise a boat hire in Mexico in line with numerous seasons and across various regions. One thing’s for certain - you won’t find yourself stuck on a cloudy ocean at any moment while sailing Mexico on your Sailo private yacht charter.

Between September and April, Mexico experiences close to no rainfall, with the rainy season usually starting in May. Depending on your preferences, you can sail during winter in the Sea of Cortez, where the waters and air are not tropical, and offer a less balmy sailing experience; or, you can head south to Puerto Vallarta from Mazatlan, and enjoy consistent tropical warmth. The prime season for cruises usually lasts from November to June, and the conditions will never be chilly! While the Pacific Coast of Baja experiences some strong winds at various times of the year, overall the sailing winds in Mexico are light and easy to navigate on your Sailo private yacht charter.

The variety of towns, harbors, and coastal states are unparalleled in their suitability for sailing. To the west, El Cid, Mazalan, is famous for its stretching coastline and bustling marina, while Baja and the Sea of Cortez are filled with well-known spots for La Paz boat charters and Cabo San Lucas yacht rentals. To the east, Cancun yacht rentals and Veracruz boat charters are popular spots to harbor in Mexico, whether you are a party-lover or want to explore historical landmarks.

Other seaports worth visiting as part of your Mexico boat rental trips include the Port of Ensenada and the Port of Altamira. And let’s not forget the magical coastal destinations such as Tulum, Puerto Vallarta yacht charters , and Puerto Escondido, which all offer different activities and cultural attractions to suit every boat charter on a sailing itinerary in Mexico.

Protesters storm Mexico's Senate after ruling party wins votes for court overhaul

Hundreds of protesters pushed into Mexico’s Senate as lawmakers weighed a contentious plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary, forcing the body to temporarily suspend its session

MEXICO CITY -- Hundreds of protesters broke into Mexico's Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers weighed a contentious plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary , forcing the body to take a temporary recess for the safety of the senators.

The shut down came just hours after Mexico's ruling party, Morena, wrangled the votes it needed to jam through the proposal after one member of an opposition party flipped to support it.

That move and other political maneuvering ahead of a vote on the plan championed by outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador fueled even more outrage after weeks of protests by judicial employees and law students.

Critics and observers say the plan, in which all judges would be elected, could threaten judicial independence and undermine the system of checks and balances.

Some protesters entered the Senate chambers in an effort to block the vote after they said lawmakers were not listening to their demands. Protesters broke through the door of the Senate chamber pushing aggressively, using pipes and chains. At least one person fainted after protesters broke in.

“The judiciary isn’t going to fall,” yelled the protesters, waving Mexican flags and signs against the overhaul. They were joined by a number of opposition senators as they chanted in the chamber. Others outside the court roared when newscasters announced the Senate was taking a recess.

Among them was Alejandro Navarrete, a 30-year-old judicial worker, who said that people like him working in the courts “knowing the danger the reform represents” came to call on the Senate to strike down the proposal.

“They have decided to sell out the nation, and sell out for political capital they were offered, we felt obligated to enter the Senate," he said, carrying a Mexican flag. "Our intention is not violent, we didn't intend to hurt them, but we intend to make it clear that the Mexican people won't allow them to lead us into a dictatorship.”

Despite unrest in recent weeks, the plan sailed through the lower chamber of Congress last week, and was passed onto the Senate, where López Obrador's Morena party lacked the necessary supermajority to approve it. In recent weeks, it was able to peel off two senators from an opposition party, but came into this week still missing one more.

It was unclear where that vote would come from because the country’s opposition vehemently opposes the plan. But over the weekend, observers began to speculate that a senator from the conservative National Action Party (PAN), Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez, would support Morena as he refused to answer calls from his party leadership.

On Tuesday, Yunes Márquez announced he would take leave due to health issues and be replaced by his father, Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares, a former governor of Veracruz said he would vote for the plan. He said he knew the plan was “not the best” but said more laws down the line could improve it.

“Mexico is not going to be destroyed for approving this reform, nor will the reform automatically change the reality of a justice system that is calling out for fundamental change,” Yunes Linares said.

Yunes Linares strolled into the Senate chambers and was met with applause and chants of “hero!” by Morena senators and screams of “traitor!” from his own party. One PAN senator, Lilly Téllez, even threw dozens of coins at Yunes Linares, calling him a ”traitor who sold out his country" for his own benefit. A Senate vote was expected Wednesday.

The national head of PAN, Marko Cortés, claimed that it “is evident” that there was an “impunity pact” between the Yuneses and the government so he would vote in favor of the overhaul. Cortés was referring to a July arrest order for Sen. Yunes Márquez, for alleged falsification of documents and fraud related to his candidacy.

Yunes had challenged it and got a temporary suspension, calling it a political persecution by the governing Morena party, the same party his father now appears ready to support.

His father, Yunes Linares, dodged questions from the media about how he would vote but accused Cortés of “lynching” him and claimed it was “absolutely false” that he has been coerced to vote for the overhaul. He was flanked by two Morena senators as he spoke.

A Yunes vote in favor would allow the ruling party to clear the biggest hurdle in making the proposal law. If it passes the Senate, it will have to be ratified by the legislatures of 17 of Mexico's 32 states, but the governing party is believed to have the necessary support.

The plan has received fierce criticism from within and outside the country.

López Obrador — a populist long averse to independent regulatory bodies who has ignored courts and attacked judges — claims his plan would crack down on corruption by making it easier to punish judges. Critics say it would handicap the judiciary, stack courts with judges favoring the president's party, allow anyone with a law degree to become a judge and even make it easier for politicians and criminals to influence courts.

It has spooked investors and prompted U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar to call it a “risk” to democracy and an economic threat.

The Tuesday break-in by protesters was met by sharp criticism by some like Morena senator Andrea Chávez, who wrote in a post on X: “Violently breaking into the plenary session where we, the representatives of the people, deliberate is not a way to resolve differences.”

Others like Mayuli Martínez Simón, a PAN senator, cast the blame on the ruling party as they stood on the Senate floor among throngs of protesters. As she did, protesters trickled out, headed to another building where senators restarted their debate. Protesters once again tried to enter the alternate location, ending in clashes with police forces, which set off tear gas.

“With absence of dialogue from Morena, today this is what we're seeing. The citizens, Mexicans, took over the Senate, entering with force. It's not the best, but we didn't have any other option,” she told the Associated Press in an interview.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Norma Piña, whose position would be subject to elections, called for Mexico's Senate to hear the voices of protesters, and called for peace.

Piña “reiterates the call for listening, legal and institutional channels and peaceful, open and responsible dialogue as the way to resolve our differences and move towards the reconciliation and peace that Mexico needs,” posted the Supreme Court on X.

Tropical Storm Francine forecast to strengthen into hurricane 'soon' as it aims for U.S. Gulf Coast

A strengthening Tropical Storm Francine is expected to become a hurricane long before it reaches the Louisiana coast Wednesday, federal forecasters said on Monday.

On Monday evening, the storm was in the Gulf of Mexico, about 145 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.

It was moving north-northwest at 7 mph as it will brush the adjacent shores of Mexico and Texas through Tuesday, the center said in a public advisory Monday evening. It is forecast to take a right turn toward the northeast before approaching Texas' Gulf Coast east of Galveston and Louisiana's coastline on Wednesday, it said.

Track Tropical Storm Francine’s path, forecast and hurricane status

The hurricane center's latest forecast cone has the storm making landfall in Louisiana between the Texas border and New Orleans about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Lousiana Gov. Jeff Landry declared a state of emergency as part of the state's preparations. "This State of Emergency will allow parishes statewide to have the resources to help protect the life, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Louisiana," he said on social media platform X on Monday.

Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet of Lafayette, Louisiana, said Monday that local public schools would be closed as a precaution on Wednesday and Thursday.

The storm will strengthen and accelerate overnight, federal forecasters said. "Francine expected to become a hurricane soon," a National Hurricane Center said in the headline to its latest advisory.

The advisory adds new notices to the forecast for Texas and Mexico, including a tropical storm warning in effect for the southernmost section of Texas coastline, from Port Mansfield to the mouth of the Rio Grande, and, from the Mexican government, a tropical storm warning in effect for mouth of the Rio Grande south to La Pesca.

A hurricane watch remains in effect for almost the entire Louisiana coast from Cameron to Grand Isle.

The storm is expected to bring 4 to 12 inches of rain and trigger flash flooding along the far coast of northeast Mexico, southern Texas, southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi into Thursday morning, the hurricane center said.

"The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline," the hurricane center said, adding that the deepest water will occur along the coast and be accompanied by "large and dangerous waves."

Louisiana's coast from Cameron to Port Fourchon could get 5 to 10 feet of storm surge. The area from Cameron to High Island on the eastern coast of Texas could also see 3 to 5 feet of storm surge.

A storm surge watch is in effect for High Island, Texas, to the Mississippi and Alabama border, and Louisiana's Vermilion Bay, Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain.

Thus far this 2024 Atlantic storm season, which started in June and ends Nov. 30, there have been five named storms, three of which became hurricanes.

August’s tropical cyclone activity “was a little below normal” in terms of the number of named storms, the hurricane center said . Debby made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 1 hurricane before moving offshore and making landfall again as a tropical storm in South Carolina in early August, while Ernesto became a Category 1 hurricane when it moved over Bermuda in mid-August.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year, forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms — which is defined by having winds of 39 mph or higher — with eight to 13 forecast to become hurricanes. The above-normal activity was forecast because of near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds and less wind shear.

“With absence of dialogue from Morena, today this is what we’re seeing. The citizens, Mexicans, took over the Senate, entering with force. It’s not the best, but we didn’t have any other option,” she told the Associated Press in an interview.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Norma Piña, whose position would be subject to elections, called for Mexico’s Senate to hear the voices of protesters, and called for peace.

Piña “reiterates the call for listening, legal and institutional channels and peaceful, open and responsible dialogue as the way to resolve our differences and move towards the reconciliation and peace that Mexico needs,” posted the Supreme Court on X.
