The 400-foot-long Kismet embarks on her maiden voyage in the Med

When it comes to exclusive enclaves, it’s pretty hard to compete with Monaco. The world’s elite flock to the tiny principality on the French Rivera for its sunny weather, sophisticated hotels and casinos, spectacular shopping and other financial reasons. They love to drive their fast cars down the famous roads leading into the city, and they love the speed and power of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, too.

Monaco Yacht Show 20224

But as for the absolute pinnacle of luxury, it doesn’t get much better than owning a superyacht. And for the select few who happen to be shopping for a superyacht, there’s one place to see nearly all of the best, and biggest, and most technologically advanced yachts that money can buy (in addition to the tenders, and limousines, and private submarines, and luxury cars that go along with a superyacht) in one place: The Monaco Yacht Show , which starts next week.

Renaissance is massive

During the show, the docks of Monaco’s famous port are always filled with numerous yachts longer than 250 feet. But this year, the largest superyacht in the show is 400 feet long! And lots of superyachts in the 300-foot-long range will be there, too.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

So, if you are lucky enough to be in Monaco later this month, I’ll see you there. But if you not, here’s a sneak peek at the five largest yachts that will be on display.

Kismet underway

What can I say about the 400-foot-long Kismet (which was built by Lürssen , features an exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and an interior design by Reymond Langton Design and is available for charter with Cecil Wright ) that can help you understand just how big a 400-foot-long superyacht is? How about, since it measures 40 feet longer than an American football field (including the end zones), it’s safe to say that Kismet would only just barely fit inside the Jacksonville Jaguars EverBank Stadium. And that’s only if it could somehow be lowered from the top with a crane!

Kismet departs Lurssen shipyard in Germany

But since these photos and that explanation can’t really convey just how big Shaid Kahn ’s (the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars) new 400-foot-long superyacht is...The only way you’ll really be able to understand just how big the Jacksonville Jaguars owner’s new yacht is to see it for yourself in Monaco next week. It’s going to be largest yacht at the show and has raised the bar on what’s possible when it comes to designing, building, owning and chartering the largest yachts in the world.

The interior for the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week

And since Kismet has already spent her first season in the Mediterranean and is available for charter through Cecil Wright (instead of being hidden away for a private owner like many yachts in this size range are), you, too, could experience what it’s like to live the superyacht life aboard one of the largest and most opulent vessels in the world.

The interior for the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week is massive

So, if you looking for a charter yacht that costs roughly $3 million per week, the Monaco Yacht Show will be the place where you can see just how opulent Kismet (and theses other superyachts too) for yourself.

‘Renaissance’

The Bannenberg & Rowell-designed Renaissance that can accommodate 36 guests in 16 cabins is unlike ... [+] most other superyachts that are available to charter

The 367-foot-long, 7,200-gross ton, Bannenberg & Rowell -designed Renaissance is um, a “really big superyacht.” But what intrigues me the most is that unlike most superyachts that can only accommodate 12 guests per charter, Renaissance has been designed to swaddle 36 guests in superyacht luxury.

Renaissance underway

As you’d imagine, this yacht has it all. Open-air dining on five decks and a dining room with 18-foot-tall ceilings on the main deck. A sushi bar. A pizza oven by the huge pool. And of course, the requisite DJ stations when it’s time to party. There’s also a massive cinema that has seating 19 guests on lower deck—the perfect place to just Netflix-n-chill.

The 18-foot ceilings aboard RENAISSANCE BANNENBERG + ROWELL DESIGN

And, oh yeah, the spa features hot and cold plunge pools, steam room and sauna, two treatment rooms and a full beauty salon. Contact Burgess for more info.

The all-new exterior lines of Oceanco H3

I’ve seen lots of superyacht designs come to life thanks to the hard work, dedication, perseverance and love that the large fraternity of superyacht designers, builders, artists and countless others pour into every spectacular new yacht that gets launched.

The rebuilt Oceanco H3 got a "rockstar" relaunch.

But I must admit, after seeing the 344-foot-long Oceanco -built (and rebuilt) H3 (first launched in 2000) emerge after an intensive 3-year-rebuild, I’m at a loss for words. I’m in awe, actually. Because after spending time at Oceanco with the project team and the owner's representative , I understand why this project is way more than just a refit.

It’s been transformed into a brand-new yacht with every modern comfort, but also retains its…soul.

The accommodations onboard the 334-foot-long H3 are spectacular

The sustainability impact of this project is also pretty awe-inspiring to me, too. According to Oceanco’s team of engineers, simply using an existing hull instead of building an brand-new one resulted in a 50% reduction of carbon emissions for the build. And since H3 has been repowered with smaller yet much more efficient engines (and her top speed has been reduced slightly), the yacht burns much less fuel than she previously did as well. Delivery time was reduced by 25% as well, and hopefully we see more projects take this approach in the future.

The video wall in the welcome area of the Ocean co H3 is innovative as well as attention grabbing.

Oceanco’s CEO Marcel Onkenhout adds, “To say that this has been a remarkable process is an understatement. The project has called for passion, dedication and extraordinary craftsmanship, with many involved in her creation now contributing to her recreation, including myself.” Contact Edmiston for more info.

Silver Yachts' BOLD is sure to get attention at this years Monaco Yacht Show

The 278-foot-long BOLD is the largest and most aggressive superyacht the Australian-based Silveryachts has ever built. Working in collaboration with yacht designer Espen Øino BOLD brings a whole new look to the explorer yacht category.

There helideck aboard BOLD is...bold!

Amels Full Custom ENERGY will be at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show

The 255-foot-long Amels full-custom yacht ENERGY was created by exterior designer Espen Øino and interior designer Francois Zuretti to provide unapparelled luxury and access to the water.

The top deck’s helipad forward is a versatile space outside heliops—sun lounge, al fresco yoga studio with wraparound ocean views, a space for elevated entertainment served by the statement bar...assorted lounging areas and dayhead inside. The jacuzzi and sun pads aft allow guests to bask in the sun.

The bridge deck music lounge is designed for acoustic excellence. There is a Steinway baby grand piano and marble-topped bar. The entertainment continues in the open-air lounge aft, guests can find some privacy on the sofa forward of the bridge or keep going on the walkaround sidedecks to appreciate the anchorage from every possible vantage point.

Full-height windows in the the owner’s deck bedroom provide direct access to a private foredeck terrace, a hot tub and a mesmerizing marble fire pit. Contact Burgess for more info.

US alleges sanctioned Russian oligarch’s niece made payments for his $300M yacht

The yacht, known as the Amadea, was seized by officials in 2022, with the U.S. alleging billionaire Putin ally Suleiman Kerimov is the ultimate beneficial owner.

superyacht redemption owner

U.S. authorities claim to be one step closer to proving a seized $300 million mega yacht is owned by sanctioned Russian Suleiman Kerimov, according to new court filings that detail alleged payments for the boat from the oligarch’s niece.

The yacht, a 348-foot luxury vessel known as Amadea, was seized in Fiji in 2022 by local officials at the request of the United States, as part of the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to identify and seize assets of sanctioned Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Kerimov, known for throwing lavish parties and for his reportedly close relationship with Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018. Britain and the European Union later followed suit.

However, since the Amadea’s seizure, another Russian oligarch, Eduard Khudainatov, who is not currently under U.S. sanctions, has claimed to be the yacht’s rightful owner — an assertion U.S. authorities deny.

Prosecutors allege that new documents show Kerimov’s niece, Alisa Gadzhieva, entered into a loan agreement with the company that owns the yacht, Errigal Marine Limited, and then made two payments to Khudainatov’s holding company, Invest International Finance Ltd, Intelligence Online reported .

“The United States takes sanction evasion seriously and will use all tools at its disposal to ensure that sanctioned individuals are held accountable for their crimes,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said in an earlier statement .

The ship belongs to an array of high-value luxury items linked to Kerimov, including private jets and sportscars, like a $650,000 Ferrari that Kerimov totaled in a fiery crash on the French Riviera in 2006.

The yacht’s seizure followed ICIJ’s Pandora Papers, which included revelations on the offshore financial empire of Kerimov and his closest associates. The investigation showed billions of dollars flowing through opaque offshore shell companies associated with Kerimov, and covert money flows tied to oligarchs and others close to the Kremlin. It also highlighted offshore professionals who have helped oligarchs secretly buy luxury assets like yachts and jets.

Gadzhieva’s brother, Kerimov’s nephew Nariman Gadzhiev, is also under U.S. sanctions for allegedly serving as an assistant and financial facilitator for Kerimov. ICIJ’s reporting showed that, in 2012, a firm registered in Gadzhiev’s name worked with Credit Suisse to secure a $67 million loan for the acquisition of a custom-built Boeing 737 Business Jet as well as a Bombardier Global Express jet. A few years later, an article in Forbes Russia described Kerimov as owning the same kind of Boeing jet.

The Amadea, which is currently in U.S. custody, has already cost over $7 million in taxpayer funds to maintain while the legal battle plays out, The Guardian reported.

Peter Wilson: Insights from the original owner’s rep

Peter Wilson, president, MCM Newport.

He says he has signed so many non-disclosure agreements he can’t talk to himself anymore.

It’s a good line, and it encapsulates the secrecy of the new-build yacht business. Fortunately, Peter Wilson, president of construction and yacht managers MCM Newport is happy to talk to us about a life spent guiding wealthy owners through yacht build projects and managing their vessels once afloat.

Sign up for the Superyacht Investor newsletter

It is a story that begins with yacht racing and adventuring on the world’s oceans, including voyages to the Arctic and Antarctica.

“I couldn’t do what I do now without having been to sea because I know what happens on the blackest of nights when it’s blowing the oysters off the rocks,”  says the Briton.

Boundary breaking

Wilson has overseen more than 100 construction projects since starting  MCM in Newport, USA in 1988. About 70% of MCM’s business is managing about 30 yachts, up to about 73m (240ft) in length.

One of his latest projects is the revolutionary sailing yacht  Zero , which aims to be completely fossil fuel-free.

The owner, through the  Foundation Zero  sustainability think-tank, is an advocate for more openness, sharing the technology to help others build superyachts in a  “better way”.  Instead of signing an NDA, Wilson says it’s actually a  “disclosure agreement” .

Innovative solutions range from hydrogeneration and thermal batteries down to the design of pots and pans in the galley.  “The research and development programme on the project is remarkable,”  he says.  “As a team, we’re trying to find better ways and lower consumptive ways to build that boat. It is boundary breaking in many ways.”

Owner’s advocate

In the early days Wilson was a boatbuilder, particularly welding and fabricating, and with his practical skills and sailing experience he gravitated into America’s Cup circles. He worked on seven Cup cycles spanning 1983-2000, winning in 1992 as technical director of America Cubed, which he describes as  “a great source of pride” .

Brimming with know-how, but bouncing from one project to the next, Wilson and colleague Nigel Ingram wondered if they could  “package this knowledge and use it in a more permanent way” .

“We came up with the concept of project management or owners’ representation, because at the time there was not a lot of discipline around these projects, around the timeline, around the budget, around the technical attributes and the performance of the boat,”  he says.  “We figured the owner needed somebody in his corner.”

READ: Navigating yacht show season is easy as A, B, C

Their first was a Sparkman and Stephens-designed 73ft aluminium sailing yacht called  Encore,  built in New York.

They still manage that boat and others for the same family 36 years later, which is how the yacht management side of the company came about. Their philosophy is to be the “owner’s advocate and the captain’s ally” .

“The owner is who we answer to, but we want to make the captain shine, because if we’re doing a good job of supporting them and they’re doing a good job managing their crew, then the experience of the owner is better,”  he says.

According to Wilson, the boatbuilding landscape has changed  “profoundly”  since his early days.

“When we started a big boat was 65-70 feet,”  he says.  “Now we build tenders bigger than that. The level of sophistication, complexity and cost of these yachts has increased exponentially.”

Added to that he says the  “ever increasing”  bureaucracy of operating these yachts means the  “stakes are much higher” .

While knowing about yachts is  “profoundly important” , Wilson suggests knowing how to deal with people is  “potentially even more important”  given the cast of characters involved in a big project.

“ A lot of them have opinions and a lot of them have quite well-developed egos, so to try and keep everybody on the same page can be challenging,”  he says.  “We try to work in a collegial, convivial way to focus on the prize.”

Under the microscope

On  Zero , the open-source nature of the development presents challenges with subcontractors who are often initially wary of giving up their intellectual property (IP). The  Zero  team insists it is not their background IP, but the IP developed for the project itself that will be disclosed.

“It’s a cultural shift that is difficult for them to accept because it’s been such a closed industry and they’re not naturally predisposed to sharing stuff,”  says Wilson.

“But from a holistic view of the marine industry, the more we share, the better we get across the board. And we have to do better because we are under the microscope as an industry.”

READ: Why new builds need operational design input

In other situations, Wilson has experienced yards going bust during a project, requiring  “cool heads and careful people-management”  to complete the build  “somehow, somewhere” . There have been clients who have run out of money, such as one during the global financial crash in 2008 who asked for the build to be put on hold.  “That’s quite hard to do with a big hull, an interior that was 50% built and a workforce showing up each day to build it,”  says Wilson.

The yacht construction agreement showed the client would be in default, but given their long-standing relationship, Wilson found a solution. They stored the hull and deck, inventoried all the pieces and put it all in a climate-controlled warehouse. After a couple of years, the client reignited the project.

Epic adventure

Then there have been interior designers who were new to yachting. Once, while studying the general arrangement on a sailing yacht project, a new designer declared that the object at the front of the main saloon needed to be moved. Wilson said that wasn’t possible, to which she suggested moving it to the side.  “Again, I explained that wasn’t really viable because what she was looking at was the main mast,”  he laughs.

But there have been incredible perks, too. A few years ago, a client who built a high-performance sailing yacht for ocean voyaging took Wilson from Ushuaia, Argentina, through the Southern Ocean to South Georgia, spending five weeks hiking in the mountains made famous by the stricken explorer Ernest Shackleton before sailing up to Uruguay.  “An epic adventure,”  he says.

It is important to remember, he says, that building a new yacht is  “potentially a once-in-a-lifetime, extremely special undertaking”  for a client.

“It’s a very personal relationship because you have to know everything about the client and their family and you have to work together collaboratively in their homes, on their planes, in their existing yachts. So you have to like each other,”  he says.

WATCH: ‘The risk with innovative new builds’

Wilson was once discussing new-build timelines for an elderly client. When the client heard it would take more than a couple of years, he gently reminded Wilson’s team of the pressing need to complete it in the most efficient manner possible.

“Boys, don’t forget that in my house, we don’t buy green bananas anymore,”  the client said.  “I’m pleased to say that he got to enjoy his yacht all over the planet for many years,”  adds Wilson.

Beautiful thing

According to Wilson, the  “fundamental”  key for an owner’s representative is to be  “ethical and trustworthy”  with no conflict of interest.

“The whole process is exciting and challenging and there are times when I pull my hair out when there are lots of disputes to resolve but that’s all part of the process,”  he says.

But the highs are worth it.

“When you first meet the owner and they like you and what you have to offer, you shake hands and sign the agreement. That’s a fantastic moment,”  he says.

“You started with a blank sheet of paper and you end up with this beautiful thing that’s launched and the bottle is broken over the bow, it still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

“And then you go yachting for the first time and you’ve got the owners on board and they’re beaming and smiling. It’s absolutely wonderful.”

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner

Sid Garcia Image

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.

Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.

Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.

An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.

A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."

"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."

The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.

The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.
