Wraith Powerboats of Lake Havasu, AZ, builder of a stylish 28-foot high-performance catamaran, is hard at work tooling a 40-foot center console model it hopes to have competed by the 2024 boating season, according to company owner Gene Cunningham .

“The boat will be called the 40' Draugr (pronounced drowger ),” Cunningham says. The name refers to an undead creature from Norse mythology, often guarding buried treasure. “The word Wraith means ghost, so we're using another ghost theme.”

The introduction of the Draugr represents the first time a West Coast muscleboat builder has officially thrown its hat into the proverbial ring to compete with the proliferation of East Coast center consoles, although a number of others have expressed interest over the years. “We're in the tooling stage right now and we should have a boat wet within probably about 10 months,” Cunningham says. “We’ve been around for five years, we have a beautiful catamaran and we’ve been seeing a lot of center consoles coming to Havasu. They’re kind of a hot commodity now, so we’ve just decided to build one. We’re going to make a sick center console.”

The boat will be 40 feet in length, with an 11-foot beam, and will be powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R outboards. “We’ve designed it to have a full cabin, with a galley, a nice-sized bed, a TV, shower," Cunningham says. "It’s going to be a beautiful boat.”

Done-it-again

Think Wraith was out testing on Sunday in their outboard cat, could have been Sat. We were at the Jetski races.  

I think these boats will sell like hot cakes! The market is so hot, and pricing has gone so nuts on them, if they perform, they will sell.

Sure wish I could talk about spending $700k on a boat. Hope it works out for them, like to see "new" builders trying new things

building five 40' boats in the Cheetah building?  

CC will not be as big in CA as it is in FL. Perhaps in some lakes, but not in the big blue, as the weather out in the Pacific is sooo different, that a walkaround is more conducive for local waters...... That Pacific swell can get fun.

Food for thought, are there any 40’ boats you can buy new for less than $699k? East coast or West, I assume the list is pretty short if there are any. When 23’ wake boats are $400k, I think a 40’ CC is a steal at $699k (I don’t have money for a quarter of a new wake boat btw). Renderings look cool, I really hope this works out for them! Might be challenging to build in the Cheetah building, but they’ll figure something out!  

700k is nothing for those Florida boys. What is a 50 MTI, $2m+?

In the 80s a 25 ft boat seemed huge , now in the 2000s a 40 footer seems kinda normal.  

I was talking to Gene earlier and he said fully loaded they should be under 800k.. that’s fully loaded AC / radar big screens you name it

Good lines. Would love to see a havasu built CC. Wonder who’s mold. Takes a shit ton of money and R&D and preferably a naval architect to design a brand new hull. I’m guessing existing hull?

Things in general just cost a ton these days. We come from an era where 30'+ boats with twins were money most couldn't even fathom. We were all cruising 10-25k 21' boats drinking shitty beer enjoying life. Today an average boat is 100k + and a average truck is 60k++. Before you even get started with a new build the dang engines/drives cost you a crazy amount of $$$. These monster CC have 200K++ worth of outboards....The builders have figured out you can no longer afford to build a simple entry level boat due to component cost if they want to make any $$$. Building less million dollar boats with big profits makes more sense. Pay to play. With that said I'm not sure where people are getting the $$$...haha

With jet drives, Wraith has a draft of just four feet, another noteworthy asset for visiting shallow-water ports such as the Gulf Coast of Florida or the Bahamas.

The AB 120 has unusually low-profile lines, so much so that it resembles a massive steak knife cutting across the water. But even with extra-sleek aesthetics, the designers managed to add plenty of social space. Foldout terraces to either side of an aft beach club provide 1,100 square feet of open space for owner and guests to enjoy themselves close to the water.

Just above, the cockpit and salon are both open concept, and with the electric doors open, the two converge to create a space that feels like a Tribeca loft. The salon’s light, airy feel is accentuated by 500 square feet of glass. The flybridge can be used for alfresco dining or open-air movies.

On-board accommodations include a full-beam owner’s suite, with a Jacuzzi, along with four guest staterooms. Five crew members are housed in three unusually spacious cabins, with a large mess for dining.

This unique, go-fast superyacht is currently listed on the brokerage market for $18.4 million.
