Dockmate® is the most reliable and accurate wireless remote docking system for your boat, made by boaters for boaters.

Easy Engineering: A brief description of the company and its activities.

DOCKMATE: As yachtsmen with more than 40 years of experience, we truly believe in the simplicity of things, and more specifically: simplicity of operating and control. We were looking for the best wireless remote control system, and when we couldn’t find it, we decided to make it ourselves. That is why we kept our remote’s layout simple and smooth.

Our aim is to revolutionise the way we dock and enable captains to explore the world by setting the world free from docking stress.

E.E: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

DOCKMATE: We are focused on developing and manufacturing a single product line of wireless remotes to assist in docking, resulting in our products being the best wireless remote control systems available for yachts and boats. We are committed to continuously improving our products and expanding our offerings to meet the evolving needs of boat owners and operators.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

DOCKMATE: Dockmate announced last year an absolute revolution in easy and stress-free docking with its patented SoftDocking functionality.

Regardless of the size or type of boat, power or number of engines, one thing that every boater understands is docking is made more complex by the delay between engaging the throttle and the moment the boat begins to move. This is one of the biggest differences between driving cars and driving boats, so much so that beginner, and even some advanced, boating safety courses have sections entirely dedicated to safe docking techniques to help boaters understand and feel comfortable. Now, Dockmate has solved this problem for good. With its newly-patented technology, the Dockmate remote control docking system now has the ability to provide a measured and fully-customizable engine response. This consistent intermediate throttle response eliminates the ‘kick’ that boaters dread during close quarter manoeuvres. This completely removes the ensuing stress of engaging the throttle into gear.

yacht remote control

Dockmate also announced the addition of a powerful new free feature for all Dockmate analogue and CAN bus remote controls – Throttle+.

In an effort to give users the most flexibility and control to operate their vessels in almost any situation or conditions, Throttle+ offers a predetermined additional boost of throttle on every SINGLE, TWIN and TWIST Dockmate remote control. Building on the recent release of Dockmate’s patented SoftDocking feature, every Dockmate can now have three levels of engine control.

On SINGLE and TWIN models a quick tap of the forward or reverse button gives a pre-programmed gentle rotation of the prop, called SoftDocking, for close quarters manoeuvring; a full press of the forward or reverse buttons engages idle power; and by pressing the “SEL” button while pressing either forward or reverse gives a pre-programmed boost of additional throttle called Throttle+. This predetermined amount of throttle can be calibrated per direction to fit the precise needs of each customer and the type of vessel they own.

On a TWIST (joystick) remote there is no need to press the SEL button to use Throttle+. Instead Dockmate uses the proportional nature of the TWIST joystick, allowing users to tap the joystick for SoftDocking, a full push of the joystick in any direction forward, reverse or diagonal, for idle speed or by pushing the joystick further over the Throttle+ threshold to engage the additional thrust.

SoftDocking and Throttle+ are pre-loaded on all new Dockmate controls and are configured during installation.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

DOCKMATE: Dockmate offers a comprehensive range of wireless remote control systems. The Dockmate® RED is our base model. It supports on/off control of the engines and thrusters. It’s available for single and twin engine boats, but it’s compatibility is limited to boats fitted with simple analogue electronic controls for engines and thrusters.

The Dockmate TWIN & SINGLE (respectively for twin and single engine boats) are the next step up. They provide on/off control of the engines and thrusters. Their Throttle+ feature enables a captain to add a predetermined amount of throttle to the engines when needed, and their SoftDocking feature makes it a breeze to control a motor yacht with big engines.

The dockmate TWIST – our flagship model – works for all boats and any propulsion type (including joystick systems that turn pods or outboards) It offers all the same features as the TWIN and SINGLE and adds to that a proportional joystick, which enables you to proportionally control the engines, and supported proportional thrusters. TWIN, SINGLE, and TWIST are compatible with virtually any electronic control system, analgue or CAN bus.

SINGLE_explained-2-1024x835_text

The VECTOR is a variant of the TWIST made specifically for boats with maximum 1 thruster and joystick systems like Volvo Penta joystick and Mercury Joystick Piloting 2, which turn the pods or outboards.

All Dockmates models are also able to control the horn and up to 2 windlasses (only 1 windlass for Dockmate® RED).

And all Dockmate systems use DockLink™, our best in class proprietary wireless communication protocol.

Whether it’s a small pleasure boat or a large yacht, Dockmate has the right solution to meet the specific requirements of our customers. Each system is customizable and can be tailored to the specific requirements of different boats, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.

When using a Dockmate® remote, that was charged to 100%, it takes up to 3 hours of constant use (remote actively communicating with the Receiver) to deplete the battery. This translates to a few very difficult and/or long docking manoeuvres, or lasts at least 15 docking manoeuvres of approximately 10 minutes.

During our test charging a Dockmate® remote from empty to completely full takes up to 3 hours. In practice we’ve observed a typical charging time for a Dockmate® remote of 20 to 40 min. For boaters using our latest Dockmate® Cradle, their Dockmate® remote is virtually always charged up and ready for use.

Wireless Yacht Controllers

  • By David Schmidt
  • Updated: November 4, 2019

Yacht wireless controller

An earnest crosswind piped across the waters off Florida’s Virginia Key, where the Miami International Boat Show was well underway. Victor Avila, Dockmate’s chief technical specialist, handed me a Dockmate wireless device and control of the Topaz 27 center-console—in clear view of several thousand spectators. As a lifelong sailor who’s shy about docking powerboats, I felt mild trepidation, but the system was so intuitive that I quickly got comfortable spinning circles and performing other maneuvers using the controller and, through it, the Topaz’s single screw and bow and stern thrusters.

Crosswinds, currents and skinny margins for error: At its brightest hour, docking is an art form. At its darkest, it’s a public shaming that so often comes with a memorable yard bill or marriage counseling (or, worse still, the hat trick). I had to agree that while wireless vessel controls aren’t mandatory safety equipment, they do make docking easier, safer and more intuitive.

At their core, today’s vessel-control systems, including Dockmate and Yacht Controller, consist of a wireless transmitter (the controller), a black-box receiver and a set of connecting cables. This hardware runs on sophisticated software that typically integrates directly with existing engine controls to deliver handheld wireless command of the yacht, so long as the transmitter is within range of the receiver. While each system differs, most wireless ones give operators command over the yacht’s engines or pod drives, bow and stern thrusters, anchor windlass, and horn. Additionally, some systems allow users to control peripheral devices such as passerelles or swimplatform elevators.

“The chief benefit is that boaters [can] leave the helm and have a closer look and still be in control with a transmitter that gives the same response and feel as [their] wired controls,” says Brian Sheehan, Dockmate’s spokesperson. “This is important in tight quarters.”

These systems can deliver fine motor control over a boat, allowing operators to slot a vessel into its berth smoothly, while freeing them to assist with docking duties.

“These aren’t cars: We’ve got wind and tide, and we’re always moving,” says Jerry Berton, president of The Yacht Group, which manufacturers the Yacht Controller. “Yacht Controller enables you to move the boat in any direction in as little as 1 inch at a time.”

Dockmate Wireless Controller

A device’s interface controls typically include buttons, joysticks and/or levers, with joysticks being the newest and most intuitive version. User commands are transmitted to the system’s black-box receiver via one or more radio frequencies. In turn, the system’s receiver shares the commands with the vessel’s engines and systems.

“We’ve designed cables that are very similar to the manufacturers’ [cables], but we added a Y-splitter cable,” Sheehan says. “One line goes to [the vessel’s] existing controls, and one line goes to our receiver, and [our system] takes it from there, using analog modules and CAN bus interfaces.”

A new system being able to connect to a vessel’s existing controls is key.

“Manufacturers have spent fortunes making electronic processors that control the engines and throttles, and we do not want to bypass these,” Berton says.

Safety is paramount any time mission-critical commands are transmitted over radio frequencies, especially in crowded marinas with competing RF signals. Dockmate operates on the 433 megahertz frequency over five different channels using a military-grade, frequency-hopping spread spectrum system, and each Dockmate transmitter is coded to match its receiver (think automotive fobs). Conversely, Yacht Controller is a dual-band system alternating between the 433 MHz and 916 MHz frequencies, and derivations thereof, every one-sixteenth of a second.

Yacht Controller

While their frequencies and features differ, wireless vessel-control systems work with most single- and twin-screw inboards, as well as pod-style drives and some outboards. Also, these systems generally use incremental throttle controls for inboards, but proportional controls are available for yachts with pod-style drives and/or proportional thrusters.

Engine type aside, wireless vessel control systems untether operators from the helm, allowing them to put eyeballs on the right bits of brine. While this ability adds utility and safety, these systems have narrowly defined onboard roles. ¶ “It’s only for docking,” says Sheehan, adding that the system is also useful for performing other low-speed, high-precision maneuvers such as anchoring, retrieving a man overboard, collecting crab traps or helping an angler land a pelagic prize. “We purposefully dialed back the rpm to a maximum of 30 percent of the engine’s capacity to keep boaters from using it for other means.”

Such authority settings can sometimes be custom-configured, however, Berton offers a cautionary note: “When you start going 5 knots [in a marina], your chances of accidents are high. The majority of the time, you’re going less than 5 knots.”

As with any crucial system, these require yacht owners to set up a sea trial to familiarize themselves and to identify vessel-specific customizations. For example, Sheehan says, Dockmate installers can dial down the bow thruster rpm to match the vessel’s stern thruster or modify the throttle governor.

Overall, yacht owners can expect far less stressful docking and easier close-quarters maneuvering—and, potentially, the ability to do short- or singlehanded cruising.

“People can run their boat, and they can tie it up by themselves,” Berton says. “This allows them to enjoy boating without grief, and it can be a marriage saver.”

yacht remote control

The History of Yacht Controller

Yacht Controller, recognised by national and international patents, originated in 1999 when the first prototype was developed. A remote control system that could enable a boat to be berthed without assistance using any combination of engines and thruster control all from a wireless remote handset.

After 4 years of continuous development, Yacht Controller was officially launched at the 2002 Genoa Boat Show and aroused immediate interest. The launch slogan was “everyone’s dream is to move freely from bow to stern without having to stay at the helm.” This dream has already come true for thousands of enthusiastic users all over the world.

In 2004, Yacht Controller won the NMMA Innovation Award for “best technological innovation” at the Miami Boat Show.

Our company philosophy aims to continuously innovate with new products. The later release of the DUAL BAND model followed the JCS fixed joystick, the remote hand held joystick EN-JOY and the most recent V.IPS model for pod drives is testament to this philosophy.

The Company

Created to develop innovative advanced technology products for safer and more enjoyable boating, Yacht Controller S.r.l is now an undisputed leader in its field, all over the world.

Their patented product range is CE and FCC certified by the most important international authorities. It comprises wireless radio controls, monitoring systems and displays (some integrated with a PC) and nautical PCs.

Is it easy to use Yacht Controller?

An individual who is proficient in the use and operation of boats can use the Yacht Controller remote intuitively and control their boat in a more precise, easy and safe way from anywhere on board. The remote is styled to give the owner tactile feel of all controls so you keep your eyes on your boat and select the correct commands at any time.

What do the Yacht Controller products do?

Yacht Controller products consisting of a handheld transmitter and a receiver allow you by wireless transmission to remotely control functions of your boat These functions are, but not limited to, the engines reverse and forward, the stern thruster, the bow thruster, the anchor windlass(s), management of engine acceleration, manoeuvre in automatic or manual mode. Allowing you move freely away from your helm station to anywhere aboard your boat.

In addition, among the products distributed by the Yacht Controller, there is JCS Plus, a fixed joystick where with the simple movement of the hand provides simultaneous operation of engines and thrusters to manoeuvre the boat in any direction. Ideal for berthing your boat from a fixed location aboard.

Why should I choose Yacht Controller over other manufactures?

Yacht Controller invented the wireless remote control of boats where engines and thrusters may be controlled remotely. Other manufacturers have produced (also against patents) copies that are poorly designed and unsafe.

Also consider and compare the design?

Yacht Controller with their experience and commitment to performance, reliability and safety over two decades is not matched by any competing device in the market whatever the claims.

Call us if you would like to discuss the merits of Yacht Controller.

How much does a Yacht Controller system cost?

The cost depends on several factors, including the type of engine control head aboard your boat. The number of functions you want to control in addition to the control of the engines and the choice of remote handset. These allow us to provide a cost effective tailored system for you while retaining the advantage of an upgrade path should your needs change in the future.

There are normally reasons for low value, lower cost products in any market. Choose carefully what company has wireless control of your boat. Yacht Controller is not a copy. Contact us for a quote.

Is Yacht Controller dual band better than single band?

YES. Yacht Controller always transmit simultaneously on two individual radio frequency bands (DUAL BAND) which are widely spaced in the radio frequency domain. Therefore, if the communication between the transmitter and the receiver is disturbed by a radio-frequency transmission device operating in the immediate vicinity, either legally or illegally, then communication and control continues by the other band. This means reliable communication even when a single band has wideband noise disruption that blankets the entire band.

Where a single band is used in some other manufactured products, there is no reliability that wireless commands from your remote will be actioned by the receiver.

How do the Yacht Controller wireless products work?

Yacht Controller wireless products use a coded digital signal transmitted from the handheld remote to the boat’s onboard receiver. The receiver system is equipped with microprocessors programmed directly in the laboratory, so it is impossible to interfere with other radio controls of thrusters, gangways or windlass controls available on the market, which instead use standard electronic components. Each transmitter has in fact a unique code programmed in the factory and different from all others. The coded signal is checked and verified to promote safety and security before operating the engine, thruster, windlass or other device connected.

Are there any safety features built into the Yacht Controller?

YES. Yacht Controller processes communication and operational diagnostics cyclically to ensure the  correct operation of the system at all times. This means visual indicators of each operation indicate a correct actual response of the command action.

Correct on/off start-up and ‘TakeCommand’ operation to meet regulations and safety.

Operates on two transmission bands continuously, not just frequency hopping around a single band. This means reliable communication even when a frequency band has wideband noise disruption.

Multi Processors design redundancy means just that. Each function operates with 2 CPU’s.If the system is not 100% operational the diagnostics warn of a malfunction.

Can a Yacht Controller be installed on my boat?

If the boat is equipped with electronic controls, it can be equipped with Yacht Controller. If your boat has mechanical controls we offer a solution. Contact us.

What is the use of having a Yacht Controller product on board?

The Yacht Controller products allow you to move your boat in the most varied situations in a simple and safe way by allowing you unrestricted visibility and control away from your helm stations. Having the ability to move on to the bow, stern or side decks allow you to better evaluate the situation.

During mooring they are an essential aid in approaching and moving away from the quay. Also, anchoring and picking up mooring buoys, attending refuelling station with restricted access or space. In shallow waters and in the presence of underwater obstacles you are able to command your boat from exactly the best viewpoint.

Do you have to cut or splice any wires to install Yacht Controller?

NO. Yacht Controller installations integrate with your existing boats electrical control systems to retain the integrity and operation of the boats existing controls.Yacht Controller never cuts wires and is a full Plug and Play integration which does not cut or bypass your manufactures installed electronic system, so it is secure, safe and does not void any warranties.Other manufactures also claim this although you would be wise to actually check as some claims are untrue which can lead to your boats control being unsafe.

What happens if my Yacht Controller does not work?

In this unlikely event, your engines, thrusters and anchor will remain safely in neutral and you will have normal operation of all of your yacht functions through their wired controls. In the absence of communication between the transmitter and receiver the receiver automatically deactivates the outputs and simultaneously activates the acoustic alarm.

What happens if a boat near me is operating a wireless Yacht Controller like mine?

Each transmitter has a unique code programmed at the factory and different from the others, chosen from over 65,000 combinations, therefore it is impossible to interfere with similar or same products. Even in the presence of several Yacht Controller’s’ operating simultaneously on adjacent boats incorrect activation is not possible as the transmitters continuously change the frequency of communication with the receiver.

Can the wireless signal be interfered by other devices?

Yacht Controller transmits simultaneously on two individual radio frequency bands which are widely spaced in the radio frequency domain. Therefore, if the communication between the transmitter and the receiver is disturbed by a radio-frequency transmission device operating in the immediate vicinity either legally or illegally then communication and control continues by the other band. In the extremely unlikely event of simultaneous interference on both bands, the receiver activates the buzzer for short periods, thus signalling the momentary interruption of communication with the transmitter. Due to the security of the communication protocol, it is not possible for the system to accept incorrect commands.

How do I know if the Yacht Controller transmitter is working and communicating with the receiver?

If the remote transmitter loses communication with the receiver, an audible alarm sounds on the receiver. With the NEMESIS remote this also vibrates to signal an occurrence.

Does Yacht Controller have throttle control?

YES, Yacht Controller offers optional engine throttle acceleration on the range of remote transmitters.

How long does it take to install one of the Yacht Controller products on my boat?

An average installation is performed in a day and includes system testing and operation. Installations are undertaken by Yacht Controller UK and regional dealers.

What happens if my boat does not have electronic controls?

It is not possible to install Yacht Controller directly on mechanical control heads. Our advice is to install compatible electronic control heads (we recommend MAREX ECS) in association with the Yacht Controller system of your choice. We can advise and provide a quotation for the complete installation.

Does Yacht Controller work if I only have one engine?

YES. Yacht Controller has been fitted to many boats with a single engine. Yacht Controller has been designed to maximise the use of any boat irrespective of one or two engines or thrusters.

Will Yacht Controller work on both 12 & 24v boats?

YES, Yacht Controller will operate on either voltage.

If I buy another boat can I bring my Yacht Controller System with me?

YES, it is possible. In the case of different electronic control heads or thruster controls the system is modular and can be upgraded or modules purchased to match the new boat configuration. Often owners may sell their boat with the Yacht Controller left installed, as it can add value.

What is the warranty period?

The warranty period is 2 years.

I have a metal boat; can I have Yacht Controller?

YES. Any radio transmission system can be shielded by metal surroundings. For these applications where the receiver may be placed in such a shielded location that an external antenna offered by Yacht Controller is enabled for correct RF communication between the remote and the receiver. Note: Receivers should also not be placed within engine rooms which are typically lined with a metal sound proofing or screening material.

How many functions can the Yacht Controller control?

A typical boat installation may vary between single or twin engines, 1or 2 thrusters and 1 or 2 windlasses and is matched to your boat. Yacht Controller typically controls 5 functions or 6 with the NEMESIS product although they can be expanded to control other functions like passerelles and other utilities aboard. Contact us if you have control ideas and we can advise.

Does the installation require modifications on my boat?

NO. The receiver is normally installed under the selected helm station in a suitable location out of sight. A single on/off switch will be allocated or fitted to the helm/dashboard.

Will Yacht Controller work with my Volvo Penta IPS?

YES. Yacht Controller is compatible with many IPS installations. Volvo also retain restrictions on some software platforms. Contact us for advice on your IPS yacht.

How can I know if the batteries in my transmitter have to be replaced?

Yacht Controller transceiver remotes are fitted with wireless charging. With earlier remotes when the low battery indicator LED flashes, the transmitter batteries must be replaced within two / three hours of operation. It is a good idea to always keep three 1.5 V AAA (LR06) high quality alkaline batteries in the boat or change them at least once a year at a memorable time. Do not install rechargeable cells. Follow the user manual instructions to replace the batteries when required.

How do you charge the handset?

For remote transmitters that are fitted with rechargeable batteries (non-removable) they should be positioned on the wireless charging pad as set out in the user manual.

Does the handset power down when not in use?

YES. The remote transmitter switches off automatically if it is not used for about 4 minutes. During any waiting period while manoeuvring your boat with Yacht Controller just select a thruster or engine briefly to reset the time out period.

Does the Yacht Controller have dynamic positioning?

Where a boats engine and thruster control installation has a dynamic positioning  system (otherwise known as a skyhook) that is correctly installed and operational then this option can be made available with Yacht Controller. One system is Volvo Penta.

What is the range of wireless products?

The radio control range is designed to meet the requirement of the yacht. For the larger or non fiberglass yachts we use a high performance CAN Bus external antenna.

Is the transmitter waterproof?

The transmitter housings have a IP67 water ingress protection rating and they float if dropped in water.

What happens if I do not turn off my wireless Yacht Controller remote when I do not use it?

The remote transmitter switches off automatically if it is not used for about 4 minutes and the receiver will start an acoustic alarm if the Yacht Controller receiver is still on. To deactivate the receiver, press the on/off switch installed at the helm station. To switch off the transmitter, keep the button pressed until all the LEDs turn on (safety time greater than three seconds for child-proof operation). Releasing the on/off button, the transmitter switches off completely. The confirmation of the deactivation is given by the turning off of the LEDs on the remote.

DockMate vs. Yacht Controller

Triton puts two remote control docking devices to the test — and finds that both are winners.

The Triton team recently gathered a group of independent yacht captains for a comparison test of wireless, remote-controlled docking devices. Three dealers were invited to participate, but Docking Master declined, so that left two: Yacht Controller and Dock Mate. The day before the event, Yacht Controller’s local distributor informed us that they were unable to send a dealer’s representative. But the owner of a 59-foot Marquis agreed to demo his Yacht Controller system for the testing, and Dock Mate’s local dealer team participated with their 32-foot Pursuit. The size of the vessel was not of concern, as we were only testing the feel and responsiveness of the remote docking units.

The testers included the owner/operator of the Marquis, a yacht electronic service tech, and three seasoned captains of vessels ranging from 90 feet to 250 feet. We took both boats out at the same time and had a team on each test boat. Each participant was given ample time to operate and dock both boats with each remote system on board.

Both systems feature controller options of either toggle switches or a joystick. The seasoned captains all preferred the toggle switches over the joysticks, since they were similar to having dual controls on the console.

After testing the units on the water, we returned to the dock and asked each tester to score a series of 10 questions relating to the feel of the unit, response times, ease of use, quality of the switches and toggles, range of the unit, etc. Surprisingly, the results were a tie — five questions favored Dock Mate and five favored Yacht Controller.

yacht remote control

Here is some feedback from the testers:

  • Most preferred the simplicity of the Yacht Controller unit.
  • Dock Mate will always engage the thrusters when the unit is on, whereas the Yacht Controller will time out.
  • The levers on the Yacht Controller were preferred over the buttons on the Dock Mate unit.
  • Response time was slightly faster on the Yacht Controller.
  • Dock Mate’s ability to thruster up the main engines was critical for proportional control; Yacht Controller was only able to produce idle speed.
  • Dock Mate’s rechargeable battery was preferred over Yacht Controller’s standard AA batteries.
  • Yacht Controller featured a lanyard connection on each side of the unit that made it very easy to switch over when looking aft and controlling in the reverse direction.
  • Both products tested well for range; when walked about 250 feet away from the boat, each unit still responded to the controller.

Finally, we asked which unit was preferred, and Dock Mate came out the clear winner at 4-1.  One must wonder, would the outcome have been different if Yacht Controllers dealer’s rep had participated?

Overall, it was a fun day to be on the water. Both of these remote units are great accessories and provide freedom of movement on board. Is there a product you would like the Triton team to test? Send your ideas to [email protected] .

5 Great Remote Boat Monitoring and Control Systems

  • By Randy Vance
  • February 8, 2024

Remote boat monitoring by technicians

A buzzword at the 2023 International Boat Builders Expo (IBEX) was “telematics.” Marine telematics refers to app-based systems that enable remote boat monitoring, including boat locations, speed, engine data, bilge-water depth, hatch positions, maintenance requirements and more, reporting them to you via Wi-Fi, cellular or satellite, wherever you are.

You also can control some systems remotely from anywhere on Earth. It’s the Internet of Things, as they say.

Major marine manufacturers such as Brunswick and Yamaha are developing their own remote boat monitoring systems to seamlessly integrate into new boats. Some systems are also available for do-it-yourselfers or dealers to install on existing boats. So, what can telematics do for boaters? With boat theft an issue, location services are a big part of what they do. When activated, some telematics systems can be programmed with a geofence that alerts you if the boat departs a selected electronic perimeter. Each of the following five manufacturers’ systems have their own priority functions and strategies for implementation.

Quicklook: 5 Great Remote Boat Monitoring and Control System Options

Skyhawk oversea, garmin ondeck hub, siren marine.

Skyhawk Oversea app

Oversea runs on replaceable AA batteries that give it life for from 1 to 5 years depending on how it is used. Ongoing tracking takes more power and on demand geo location takes the least. The wireless hub connects to dozens of sensors designed to do simultaneously such things as monitor hatch closures, battery voltage, bilge water, interior/exterior temperatures and more. Because it is designed to run on internal power, installation is as simple as locating the hub, power it on and then, using the app begin connecting sensors. The remote boat monitoring app gives you full information about your boat at a glance, and allows you to arm, disarm or adjust the geo fence remotely.

The Oversea wireless hub is about 4-inches square and costs $299, alone, $449 with three sensors and $599 with six sensors. In addition to indoor and outdoor geo location and sensor monitoring, the hub also monitors compass heading and so notifies the owner if that changes. Each additional sensor (examples of coverage include, motion, temperature, smoke, sound and more) is wireless, operating on its own disposable internal batteries and easy to install with included screws or adhesives.

BoatFix app and monitor

BoatFix provides boaters a concierge service of tech- and power-savvy personnel within an easy phone call should any system on board refuse to function properly, even on a Sunday morning. BoatFix partners with boat companies such as Sea Pro and Carefree Boat Rentals (with more to come) to provide factory-installed systems with three-year monitoring contracts. While some brands focus primarily on data collection and analysis, BoatFix focuses on the boater, having a 24/7 concierge desk where somebody with skills is always available. Normally offered as an OEM product, the remote boat monitoring system is free for up to three years to a new boat owner, but requires a subscription fee to continue the service after that time period.

BoatFix requires no hardware for the concierge. However, it makes three accessory devices to remotely monitor your vessel location and has certain systems in conjunction with concierge services.

BFQL 200 : This is its most popular device designed to track your boat’s position and onboard voltage, and report it to you and your concierge once every hour with the ignition off and once every minute with the ignition on. It requires no peripheral devices to do this job.

BFQL 300: This device is enhanced from the BFQL 200 with the addition of reporting bilge-pump cycles to the system, keeping boaters informed of trouble.

BFQL 100: This is a self-contained, self-powered device to monitor and report boat position once per day for three years on its internal battery.

BoatFix’s 24/7 concierge desk is staffed with propulsion and boat-systems experts who can help diagnose malfunctions and often offer a strategy to repair them on-site. The company guarantees that skilled personnel will be in place to answer the phone and help solve any onboard issues. Its monitoring systems range from a simple, discreet GPS tracking device (BFQL 100) to a networkable system that can report the boat’s position within and without a geofence, notify the owner when the ignition has been engaged, and report repetitive bilge-pump cycles, which could indicate a hull penetration.

The BoatFix Pro app provides a view of your vessel’s location and geofence region, records trips, and helps set routes via web-based mapping. It also gives fast access to towing services, and assists in communicating with concierge services for on-location repairs when possible. It could be called peace of mind on your smartphone.

$99 annually after initial three-year period.

Radian IoT monitoring

Radian’s founders established their company to partner B2B2C systems to assist boaters, builders, dealers, and financiers in managing their sport and business. Telematics capture an impressive amount of data about boat usage. With it, maintenance decisions can be made, product weaknesses and resulting improvements can be identified, and security information is reported to keep builders, financiers, and dealers aware of inventory status.

Boater usage data can also help builders and dealers make purchasing and marketing decisions based on regional boating trends. The benefit to the boat owner is having the ability to monitor a boat remotely for the vessel’s safety, security and practical maintenance. Suppose, for example, that your engine regularly exhibits high temps. The M3 notifies you and your dealer that a water pump might need service.

The gateway to all this data is the factory-installed Radian M3 device, designed to give boaters an enormous advantage in operating and maintaining the boat and its security, and enabling a dealer concierge service to the consumer. Many of the monitoring capabilities are built into the M3, eliminating some sensors.

The device monitors two battery banks, bilge-pump cycles, ambient temp, G-forces (up to 2 G), and if the battery is on or off. It notifies the dealer and the owner via text message and the Radian app if service is required. Radian M3 does not create a geofence, but Radian’s Safe Zone system notifies the owner via the app if horizontal motion activates G-force sensors or an ignition sequence begins.

Bluetooth Hub

With the hub, tire pressure and temperature sensors can be monitored while trailering.

Radian IQ gives a visual report of vessel status, location, and surrounding weather conditions, and provides access to some user- or builder-selected accessories.

Subscriptions may run one to three years by the manufacturer. Thereafter, renewals are $108 per year.

Garmin OnDeck Hub telematic system

Garmin’s OnDeck Hub telematic system was introduced two years ago. Even without a Garmin navigation system , it provides a broad array of vessel security and monitoring when connected to an NMEA 2000 network. It can gather and report connected engine data, helping to keep track of maintenance needs. The system works through Garmin’s exclusive ActiveCaptain app and cellular connectivity, keeping an eye on your boat’s location, hatch security, bilge-pump activity, battery level and more, all reported through the app. In addition, all notifications that might come through the app can be texted or emailed directly. All engine-operating data is also read and processed, giving owners an eye on the health and maintenance requirements of their engine systems. Five optional device relays can be activated through the hub for turning devices on or off on board.

The OnDeck Hub is easy to install and includes an NMEA 2000 backbone cable and Garmin network cables. Unlike competitors, the OnDeck Hub includes most of the sensors that a boater would likely desire. Sensors are hard-wired, and the system is Wi-Fi-capable, so updating firmware as needed is easy to do via an internet connection or cellular hotspot. Add up to four more DC relay switches to enable remote switching for devices on board. The hub operates up to 48 hours on its internal battery when external power is removed and notifies the owner of the change, ensuring timely action to secure the vessel. It reports on vessel location status every 15 to 30 minutes. The OnDeck Hub retails for $849.99.

Siren Marine 3 Pro Hub system

Siren Marine was recently acquired by Yamaha Marine. Yamaha’s goal is to develop the ultimate “connected boat” through its own brands and independent boat brands such as Grady-White, Regulator, G3, and Skeeter. The Siren 3 Pro Hub system can also be installed aftermarket on existing boats, including its many wired and wireless sensors. The hub itself monitors boat position and battery voltage. If the system is connected to the boat’s propulsion system via its proprietary network, it can transmit reports on all engine parameters. Siren 3 Pro connects you to your boat via a free app and cellular or satellite communications systems and cloud-based accessory switching. In the future, Yamaha plans to enable boaters to access maintenance services, engine firmware updates and more.

This hub offers cellular and satellite communications and internal GPS with geofence capabilities. It also monitors vessel voltage in the main bank to ensure that bilge pumps are running. More than a dozen wired and wireless connected sensors (priced from $38 to $140) monitor boat systems, including the bilge-water level, ambient temperature, bilge-pump cycles, hatch closures and openings, motion, and more. The hub retails for $796.86.

  • Magnetic hatch sensors
  • Battery/voltage sensor
  • Bilge-pump-cycles sensor
  • High-water sensor
  • Temperature sensor
  • 120 and 240 AC shore-power sensor
  • Motion sensor
  • Canvas-snap sensor
  • DC accessory relay switch to turn onboard devices on or off

The Siren Marine app serves as the dashboard to monitor and, in some cases, control onboard systems. It configures settings, adds sensors, and creates a geofence area.

Cellular service ranges from $22 per month to $225 per year. The satellite plan costs $350 per year.

Radio control boats compared to other RC models

With hobby-quality radio control boats, sometimes referred to as remote control boats, you can do most of the same things that you can do with RC cars. You can run them for fun, race them, admire their scale looks, and add option parts to increase their performance.

The main difference is that you don’t run your RC boat on land. That’s what makes them so popular and exciting. Picture yourself at the lake on a sunny afternoon, racing your remote control boat through the shimmering water with a broad wake and tall rooster tail behind it. Or maybe you'd prefer to gently glide along with a remote control sailboat. There’s nothing else in the RC hobby like it.

The only special requirement is that you need a body of water large enough for the RC marine model you own, without strong currents and relatively free of limbs, grasses, and other obstacles that could snag it. If your RC boat does get stuck away from shore or runs out of power in the middle of the lake, you may need access to a jon boat or other safe way to retrieve it.

Otherwise, piloting your own RC boat is as easy as driving an RC car. And just like RC cars, radio control boats are available in a wide range of styles, sizes, skill levels, completion levels, and prices. Horizon Hobby® has one that’s perfect for every interested hobbyist.

Types of RC boats

Radio control electric boats are available in many styles. Tunnel hull and hydroplane RC boats are among the fastest, with flat bottoms that skim across smooth water with little resistance when up to speed. For rougher conditions, the V-shaped hull of deep vee RC boats is best. Though not quite as fast, a deep vee can cut more easily through choppy water. Electric RC boats come in many sizes, including mini, which can be run in swimming pools or small ponds. The jet pump propelled Pro Boat® Jet Jam™ mini RC boat is a blast in water only three inches deep!

Powered by wind like their full-size counterparts, RC sailboats are great for beginners and economical, too. They provided unlimited run time as long as there’s a breeze. You might think of sailboats as elegant and leisurely paced, but there are also RC racing sailboats for modelers who crave speed.

Scale RC boats prioritize realism over speed. They still perform well, but their owners pay close attention to recreating the full-scale subjects accurately. The Dumas® Creole Queen scale steamboat kit features a motor-powered paddle wheel and includes three pages of decals.

RC airplane pilots can make an easy transition into boating with an RC airboat. These use the same power plants and propellers as RC aircraft. The engine mounts on a pedestal at the back of the boat and the force of the spinning prop pushes the boat across the water.

Remote control boats in kit form or ready-to-run (RTR

Like other categories of radio control models, RC boats can be purchased ready-to-run (RTR) with most or all accessories included, or as kits that usually require assembly, power systems, and radio equipment.

Many ready-to-run RC boat models have molded ABS plastic hulls and decks that are already joined at the factory. The motor and running hardware are usually also installed. RC boats with ABS hulls tend to be among the most affordable, but speed and performance are still impressive. With optional accessories, the Pro Boat Blackjack™ [link https://www.horizonhobby.com/product/blackjack-42-8s-brushless-catamaran-rtr/PRB08043.html] with ABS hull can go 30 mph or more.

Factory-built RC boats are also available with preformed fiberglass hulls. Fiberglass boats are more expensive due to the amount of work required by the manufacturer (the reinforcing fiberglass material must be saturated with a liquid resin and then applied to the boat hull mold). This construction is usually found on high-performance RC boats like the Pro Boat UL-19 Hydroplane , whose speed can exceed 50 mph.

Scale RC boat kits often feature wooden hulls. Though among the least expensive boat models, wooden boat kits also require the most work to complete. Many wood planks must be fitted onto the hull framework and then finished with paint or resin to ensure the hull is watertight.

The RC boat you choose will determine what else you’ll need to buy. Most ready-to-run (RTR) RC boats available from Horizon Hobby include a 2-channel radio system, motor, and ESC. You might need to provide your own suitable battery pack and battery charger. Read the product descriptions to learn what is and is not included with the RC boat you’ve chosen, and for recommended completion items.

You’ll find that the internal design of a typical electric RC boat is pretty simple. The motor is located near the front of the boat. It’s connected to a drive shaft that runs toward the back of the boat and out through the bottom of the hull. The boat’s propeller is at the end of the shaft, submerged in the water. A servo-activated rudder positioned just behind the propeller enables you to steer.

RC boats often use water cooling to keep their motor and ESC from overheating. These components are wrapped with coils of aluminum tubing, and the coils are connected to a water pickup at the bottom of the hull. As the boat moves forward, water is forced into the pickup and through the coils to provide cooling.

The electronics used in RC boats are highly water-resistant, but the boat manufacturer may recommend additional steps to seal out water for additional protection. You should also be aware that most remote control boats should not be used in saltwater. Unlike freshwater, saltwater can cause rust and other damage to delicate electronic parts.

Check out all of the great RC boats available at Horizon Hobby as well as our wide selection of boat accessory items and replacement parts from Pro Boat , Spektrum™ and Dynamite®.

Tower Hobbies is one of the leading sources for quality-built RC boats, parts and accessories. We offer one of the widest selections of RC boating equipment because there is a wide range in skill, hobby and interest levels.

It can be hard to know where to begin when buying your first RC boat and setting out for the water. It’s important to understand your current skill level, along with where you plan on setting sail, in order to find the right RC boat for your needs.

RC Boats for Beginners

There are many models and options available when starting out, so it’s important that you learn a few key areas when it comes to RC boating.

RC Boat Batteries

It’s important to understand your battery life when out on a body of water. An RC boat can and will run out of battery after an extended period of cruising on the water and it’s not fun if you have to fish out the boat yourself once it peters out. Having a second charged battery on hand can be a great way to increase your time out on the water.

RC Boat Controller Limits

In addition to battery life, it’s important to know what the range is on your model’s RC controller – especially on larger bodies of water. A beginner mistake is allowing the boat to get too far away and out of range for picking up the remote-control signal. When looking to purchase a reliable RC boat, it’s important to understand your intended application.

RC Boat Skill Level

Getting the fastest and most agile boat on the water can be fun, but it’s important to recognize your skill level. Fast RC boats can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour! RC boats can be more difficult to control and just like real boats, the RC boat can be at risk to capsizing. For beginners, you may try to find a boat with adjustable speeds and self-righting systems that help prevent issues from lack of control skill.

Types of RC Boats

We always recommend evaluating what type of hobbyist you are before making a boat purchase? Are you looking for fun, high-speed action or would you prefer a relaxing day at sail? Tower Hobbies offers a wide variety of RC boats, including RC boat kits designed to be built and driven by you. Check out our summaries below to find the right RC boat for your hobby.

Electric RC Boats

Electric RC boats use two types of electric motors – brushed and brushless. (You can learn more about the difference between brushed and brushless motors here). Electric RC boats are easier to get up and running and they are quieter and cleaner than gas RC boats. Electric boats come in a larger variety of sizes and hobby skill levels, whereas gas-powered RC boats tend to be used by intermediate or expert hobbyists.

Gas RC Boats

Gas-powered RC boats are typically larger due to the engine size, and offer increased realism, including smoke and noise of a gas-powered engine. Gas-powered RC boat engines do require some mechanical skills for engine tuning and maintenance but are typically faster and more water-resistant than brushed and brushless electric motors if well-tuned.

RC Sailboats

Remote controlled sailboats use the natural wind for movement and the user controls the boats steering and positioning of sails with a radio transmitter. RC sailboats come in a wide variety of options, including electric motors, which can be valuable when the wind dies down or better maneuverability back to shore.

RC Scale Boats

RC scale boats are based on real world ships, boats and vessels. These are typically sold in kit form, where the user builds the RC model, adds the motor and drive train and then sails the boat on the water. RC scale boat kits require skill in ship building as the model must float (balanced) and be watertight. These projects require significant time investment but can be exceptionally rewarding once completed.

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy pleads with allies for help after deadly Russian strikes

At least three people were killed this morning after Russia launched a round of air strikes against several cities in Ukraine. In the video below, watch a Sky News exclusive report on the Ukrainian resistance operating behind Russian lines.

  • Zelenskyy pleads with allies for help - as Kremlin issues warning
  • 'Military object' entered Polish airspace during Russian strikes
  • Catch-up: What you need to know from this morning
  • Watch: Who are Ukraine's secret resistance?
  • Your questions answered: Can Ukraine advance further inside Russia?
  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler

If you're just joining us this bank holiday lunchtime, it's been a significant morning for the war in Ukraine.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Russia has launched a deadly barrage of missile and drone strikes on 15 regions across Ukraine - including Kyiv;
  • At least three people are dead after Moscow used what it described as precision weapons to damage energy infrastructure;
  • Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pleaded with Western allies for more help , including allowing the use of long-range weapons in Russia and shooting down drones and missiles near their airspace;
  • An unknown military object reportedly entered Polish airspace during Moscow's barrage this morning.
  • The Kremlin has warned there will be more to come in response to Ukraine's ongoing incursion into the Kursk region;
  • It also downplayed the chances of any ceasefire talks with Kyiv, suggesting the prospect had "lost relevance".

That's all for now - stay with us for more updates and analysis through the afternoon.

Ukraine does not appear to be letting up on its surprise invasion of the Kursk border region in Russia which began earlier this month.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on what could happen next.

Today, Justice asks:

Will Ukraine be able to advance more inside Russia?

Military analyst  Sean Bell  says this…

Ukraine's audacious military incursion into Russia's Kursk region - the first such action by a military power since 1941 - appears to have caught Vladimir Putin by surprise.

Although it is unclear what Ukraine is ultimately seeking to achieve, it has stated it does not intend to "hold" ground, so its current occupation is temporary.

But what next? If Ukraine had planned to push further into Russia it would probably not have blown three key bridges across the Siem river which would have been vital to its further plans.

What's the goal?

Instead, it looks likely Ukraine was seeking to seize the initiative, to demonstrate Russia is not in control of the war, and to force Moscow to respond to the attack by transferring forces from the frontline in the Donbas, thus relieving pressure on embattled Ukrainian forces.

Destroying the bridges would make it more difficult for Russia to counterattack and expel Ukrainian forces.

Although Ukraine could push further into Russia, it would create an increasing logistics challenge to keep those forces resupplied, and also divert scarce resources from the front line.

Militarily the incursion into Kursk might appear risky, but it is probably designed to apply political pressure on Mr Putin, albeit we have yet to see whether the military or political objective prevails.

A Ukraine foreign ministry official has claimed a Russian attack on Monday targeted a hydropower plant in the Kyiv region.

"Today's Russian attack ... targeted Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, including Kyiv HPP," Andriy Sybiha said on X.

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry claimed gas compression stations were hit in three regions of Ukraine.

It also alleges to have hit power substations and Western-supplied weapons airfields in a heavy round of bombardment on Monday morning.

Telegram says its chief executive Pavel Durov has "nothing to hide" after he was arrested in France, adding the charges against him are "absurd".

The billionaire founder of the encrypted messaging app was detained after his private jet landed at Le Bourget airport on the outskirts of Paris on Saturday.

News broadcasters BFMTV and TF1 have quoted unnamed sources as saying the Russian-born entrepreneur - who became a French citizen in 2021 - was the subject of a search warrant.

Both outlets suggest the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram and potential criminal activity by users.

They said the warrant alleges his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offences, though French authorities are yet to comment.

As we've been reporting today, Russia has claimed that Ukraine has launched a number of drone attacks on buildings in Saratov.

Ukraine has yet to respond to these claims, but the video below alleges to show the moment a drone hit a high-rise apartment building in Russia.

Russian officials say a number of people were injured.

Hundreds of people have taken cover in an underground metro station today as Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones at the Ukrainian capital.

People in Kyiv were photographed sitting on stairs inside the stations, waiting for the all clear as missiles hit energy and water infrastructure sites in the city.

Russia has admitted to the strikes on Ukraine today, claiming it was targeting sites linked to the Ukrainian military.

A "military object" entered Polish airspace during the Russian attack on Ukraine this morning, reports have claimed.

It comes amid the largest Russian strike on Ukraine in weeks, with Moscow targeting energy infrastructure in three regions.

The Polish state news agency, PAP, reported that searches for the object, which was not a missile, are under way.

One of the most secret weapons to combat Russia's invasion of Ukraine has started to raise its profile.

A new video posted on social media seeks to promote the covert activities of a network of Ukrainian civilians, living - and fighting - behind Russian lines.

Run by the Ukrainian special forces, this resistance movement is growing, according to its commander, who said any adult - old, young, male, female - can join.

They just need to be loyal to Ukraine - and brave.

A British citizen - who was working for Reuters - has been found dead after a suspected Russian airstrike in eastern Ukraine, the news agency confirmed.

Ryan Evans, who was a safety advisor for the news agency, was found dead under the rubble of Hotel Sapphire in the eastern city of Kramatorsk - which is under Ukrainian control but near the front line - on Sunday.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian forces struck the hotel in the eastern Donetsk region. Russia has not yet commented.

In a statement, Reuters said: "We are devastated to learn that Reuters safety advisor Ryan Evans, who was with our reporting team in Ukraine, has been killed.

"Ryan was part of a Reuters crew staying at Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, when it was hit in a missile strike on Saturday, August 24, 2024.'
