Protected waters, great anchorages, gorgeous natural scenery and unique towns and villages make the Chesapeake an excellent choice for sailors, novice and expert alike.
Winds are usually between 7 and 20 knots year round. Navigation can be difficult due to numerous reefs. Best time to visit is between June and November.
We recommend you fly into Baltimore-Washington International Airport (45 min) or Dulles International Airport (80 min). British Airways flies direct from LHR to BWI. To get to the marina you can use Super Shuttle(800-258-3826) or get a taxi, or alternatively hire a car.
If you live in the States and want to drive, see below: *Driving SOUTH from New Jersey/Pennsylvania, follow I-95 South to Baltimore, then I-695 East toward Glen Burnie, then I-97 South toward Annapolis and Route 50 East and follow directions below. *Driving EAST from Washington D.C. take Route 50 and follow the directions below. *Driving WEST from Delaware/Maryland Eastern Shore take Route 50/301 West to the Bay Bridge.
Day 1: Herrington Harbour Located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, the harbour offers many amenities.
Day 2: Oxford Oxford’s allure is the quiet small town where townspeople make visitors feel like old friends. Oxford works hard to maintain its serene, boaterfriendly atmosphere and boasts a small, easily walk-able downtown with enough shops, restaurants, and attractions to satisfy most visitors.
Day 3: Cambridge The elegant 19th century homes lining Cambridge’s shaded streets hail from a time when the town was an economic and social center—a heritage also proudly preserved in its maritime museums.
Day 4: St. Leonard’s Creek St. Leonard Creek, about seven miles upriver from Solomons, has been said to be the most beautiful on the Patuxent. This five-mile-long creek is on the river’s northern shore.
Day 5: Solomons “Solomons Island is picturesque island town nestled in the joining of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County Maryland.Solomons remains a fishing village—alive with work-boats and an active charter fishing fleet—but it’s also a place to escape and to learn about the Bay’s past, present and future. ”
Day 6: St. Michaels St Michaels, Maryland is a quaint waterfront village on the Eastern Shore, situated on a picturesque peninsula between Tilghman Island, Easton, and Oxford. St. Michaels became an important shipbuilding center especially noted for its “Baltimore Clippers,” the fastest sailing vessels of their time.
Day 7: Back to Annapolis Bay

Our team at Sail Solomons consists of highly experienced and certified sailing instructors and captains, each bringing a unique set of skills and backgrounds. From seasoned racers to former military officers, our leaders not only share a deep love for sailing but also a commitment to teaching. They are dedicated to providing comprehensive and engaging sailing education and charter experiences in the Chesapeake Bay and beyond, ensuring that every participant gains confidence and competence on the water.
Jeff Carlsen
Jeff is a seasoned sailor and US Coast Guard licensed 100 Ton Captain with extensive experience from dinghies to ocean cruisers. He has spent two years cruising with his family across 12,000 miles from Newfoundland to the Virgin Islands, integrating sailing with home-schooling. A retired US Navy Commander and experienced racer, Jeff is passionate about teaching sailing with a focus on family-friendly and relaxed learning environments.
Chris Staley
Chris is a lifelong sailor skilled in handling everything from dinghies to cruising catamarans. He’s a licensed Coast Guard Captain with a 100 Ton Master credential, and an ASA instructor since 2007, capable of teaching advanced sailing courses. Chris also has over a decade of experience as a charter fishing captain and operates commercial marine assistance vessels. His passion for teaching sailing is evident, and when not instructing, he enjoys sailing his Oday 34 around Solomons and fishing on the Bay.
Tom and Beth Ackerman
Tom and Beth, ASA-certified sailing instructors with a USCG Masters license, live aboard their Irwin 43, Ancora Qui, in Solomons Island. A lifelong sailor, Tom introduced Beth to sailing, and after his career as a physical therapist, they embraced the cruising lifestyle in 2022. Their plan is to summer on the Chesapeake and winter in warmer climates, sharing their passion for sailing with others

It was previously known as Kuznetsk until 1931, and as Stalinsk until 1961.
Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack ostrog (fort) on the Tom River , it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog ( Кузне́цкий острог ). [2] It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. [3] Kuznetsk ( Кузне́цк ) was granted town status in 1689. [3] It was here that Fyodor Dostoevsky married his first wife, Maria Isayeva in 1857. [13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .

Within the framework of administrative divisions , Novokuznetsk serves as the administrative center of Novokuznetsky District , even though it is not a part of it. [1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [15] As a municipal division , Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated as the Novokuznetsky Urban Okrug . [15] [16] The city consists of six non-municipal intra-city districts : [16]
On 7 December 2009, by a resolution of the Novokuznetsk City Council of People's Deputies, a new version of the City Charter was approved, [16] according to which the authorities consist of:
The Novokuznetsk City Council of People's Deputies is a representative body of power and consists of 18 deputies elected in 18 single-mandate constituencies and 18 deputies elected on party lists. The term of office of deputies is five years. In September 2021, elections were held for the Council of People's Deputies, following which the seats in the council were distributed as follows: 27 - United Russia , 2 - Liberal Democratic Party , 2 - A Just Russia , 2 - Communist Party . The representative of United Russia, Alexandra Shelkovnikova, was elected chairman. The Youth Parliament of the city operates under the City Council of People's Deputies. [19]  A whole network of bodies of territorial public self-government has been created in Novokuznetsk; [20] in total, 60 of them have been created in the city: in the Zavodskoy District - 7, Kuznetsky - 6, Kuibyshevsky - 13, [21] [22] [23] Novoilyinsky - 6, Ordzhonikidzevsky - 9, Central - 16.

Metallurg Novokuznetsk is an ice hockey team based in Novokuznetsk. Formerly a member of the Kontinental Hockey League , the team is currently a member of the Supreme Hockey League . The football team of the same name was recently promoted to the Russian first division below the premier. RC Novokuznetsk compete in the Professional Rugby League , the highest division of rugby union in Russia. Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky , Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov were all born in Novokuznetsk and began their pro careers with Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Novokuznetsk is also the birthplace of US chess Grandmaster Gata Kamsky . The main airport is the Spichenkovo Airport . The city is also a major railway junction with both local and long-distance trains. Local public transport is provided by trams , buses, and trolleybuses.  Novokuznetsk has a fairly typical southwest Siberian humid continental climate ( Köppen climate classification : Dfb ) with warm summers during which most of the precipitation occurs, and severe, generally dry winters. Snowfall is very frequent during the winter, but its water content is generally very low due to the cold temperatures.
