Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Hull Length: 53.5 ft Displacement is lightship.

Catalina 545

Ingenuity and craftsmanship come together to give catalina’s flagship the ability to cross oceans in comfort.

catalina yachts 545

Catalina owners are an enthusiastic bunch, and when they said they were yearning for a big offshore cruiser, the company responded by using their wish list to design the company’s flagship, the Catalina 545. This truly American cruiser made its debut in fall.

“We wanted to take a different approach when starting the process of designing the 545,” said Gerry Douglas, Catalina’s vice president and longtime designer.  “Our dealers were telling us that their customers wanted a bigger boat than the 445 and the only option was to buy a European model.”

Douglas’ first design was the Catalina 36 in 1982, and in the 44 years since, he has worked on 40 designs for the company.

“It was about a three-year process to design and engineer the 545, incorporating owner feedback and making sure we gave them a traditional American boat with all the things they expect,” Douglas said. “We left no stone unturned when finding out how our customers use their boats and turning it into a reality.”

Catalina was founded by Frank Butler and launched its first boat, the Catalina 22 trailersailer built in California, in 1969. In 1984, Catalina bought Morgan Yachts in Largo, Florida, and in the ensuing years has expanded the manufacturing plant where all Catalinas are now built over a sprawling 26 acres. The 545 is the latest in the company’s 5 Series that was launched in 2010 with the 445 Cruiser.

The details

“We went into the design process knowing this was going to be a bluewater cruiser and we made safety a priority,” Douglas said. “Our owners sometimes sail with extended family, but most often sail as a couple, and we wanted to make this boat easy to sail shorthanded.”

catalina yachts 545

The 545’s fiberglass hull with end-grain balsa core above the waterline has a molded fiberglass structural grid and watertight bulkheads in the bow section, which the company calls the “strike zone,” and aft, which surrounds the rudder post encapsulating it in a watertight box. The one-piece deck has molded diamond patterned nonskid and bulwark toerail.

At first glance, the 545 has a more modern look than its predecessors, with a gentle spring in the sheer and nearly plumb bow. The high freeboard keeps the boat dry and provides interior volume below.

Deck hardware is robust, including stainless grabrails and lifelines. On deck storage abounds, with a cavernous lazarette and dedicated lockers for the tender’s outboard motor and grill. There is even more storage underneath the cockpit that is accessed by the hydraulic drop-down transom. On the bow are two lockers, one for chain and rode, another for sails and fenders.

The cockpit is huge, from the twin helm stations to the more than 6-foot-long seats, and it can handle a crowd comfortably. The folding centerline cockpit table features an insulated icebox to keep drinks cool.

Catalina 545

Best full-size cruiser over 55 feet.

“I liked it as soon as I got on it. I like the looks of it. I like the cockpit layout. The designer and builder, Gerry Douglas, did an excellent job explaining how he put the boat together and the choices that he made. I was impressed by the overall layout above decks and below. We didn’t have a ton of wind when we sailed it, but it acquitted itself nicely. It seemed like a pretty straightforward rig that my wife and I could handle pretty comfortably. In other words, it wasn’t complicated.”

SAIL Magazine’s Best Boat

Best large monohull 51ft and above winner & best systems winner.

“In the eyes of our panel of judges, the reason the new Catalina 545 stood out as this year’s best large monohull is because of the way its collection of engineering and design features all worked together to result in a truly outstanding vessel. Beyond that, although the company is including the new flagship in its 5-Series, Catalina fans will immediately notice some eyebrow-raising differences between it and the rest of the line.”

“Put simply, the boat not only has all those same systems today’s sailors have come to expect, but they are all both admirably well laid out and provided with excellent access points for maintenance and easier servicing down the road—a design consideration that can be as important as the installations themselves.”

Catalina 545 Named 2020 Overall Boat of the Year

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 9, 2019

Catalina 545

Every year, the Boat of the Year contest is an evolutionary affair that’s conducted over a nearly two-week period, and there are always surprises as the judging panel gets more at ease with each nominee and begins to truly understand their individual characteristics. For 2020, at each step along the way, the judges seemed to become more and more comfortable with one particular nominee. Still, when it came time to cast the ballots for “the best of the best,” collectively, it seemed that even they were somewhat astonished at the yacht that ultimately emerged atop the 22-boat fleet.

Their final decision? The Catalina 545 , conceived and designed by longtime Catalina stalwart Gerry Douglas, is 2020′s Overall Boat of the Year . So, how did they get there?

“This boat represents a significant change from previous Catalinas,” judge Ed Sherman said. “It’s a major upgrade from anything they’ve ever built. I think it’s not only significantly bigger, but better than anything they’ve done.”

“The largest vessel of a midrange production builder is a tough gamble because they’re not accustomed to building larger vessels,” judge Ralph Naranjo said. “In my opinion, Catalina upsized, upgraded and did a more-than-tolerable job of breaking through that barrier of not creating their biggest model and then suffering midsize components on it. The vision was making an ‘ocean-easy’ boat, that people who buy it will get sea time. It’s not a yacht that’s going to perpetually cross oceans. But it most certainly is a bluewater boat.”

“I like this boat quite a bit,” judge Dan Spurr said. “I don’t mean this the wrong way, but I didn’t feel like I was on a Catalina when we were inspecting it, starting with the looks of it. The profile is contemporary. They’ve obviously picked up on some of the European themes. I thought it was a handsome boat.

interior floor plan

“It’s also got a number of unusual features,” Spurr continued. “There were collision bulkheads fore and aft. The rudder stocks are inside enclosed boxes, so if there ever were a leak, the packing gland won’t find its way into the bilge or elsewhere. The shrouds were inboard so the base for the stays was a little narrower, but it really makes it easy to walk fore and aft without having to duck around the lowers. I like that.”

“I didn’t feel like I was aboard a Catalina when we inspected it. The interior is very contemporary.”

“On this boat, the forward stateroom is the owner’s cabin,” Sherman said. “It’s super comfortable, with a day lounge and kind of a Catalina trademark with the forward portion of the queen bed that lifts and retracts so you can read in bed or stretch out. It’s a really nice feature. And the aft stateroom also has a nifty one where you’ve got dual single berths that can slide together and create kind of a tight double. On the DC side, they’ve gone with a 24-volt system, which is a growing trend throughout the industry; we’re seeing it on many of the other full-size yachts. I’m glad to see it, because among other things, it saves a lot of weight in copper.

“Look,” Sherman concluded, “this boat is a totally new thing from Catalina—it really is. It’s not perfect yet; there’s still some refinement, perhaps. But ultimately, I think it will end up being pretty damn nice.”

And it has already earned substantial praise.

The New Flagship Catalina 545 Wows the Annapolis Show

Facebook

Catalina Yachts, one of America’s most venerable and influential sailboat builders over the last 50 years, introduced their all new Flagship Catalina 545 at October’s Annapolis sailboat show.  The American-designed and American-built family cruiser follows the very successful 425 that was launched two years ago and is a big sister to that design in many ways.  This is the new look of Catalina’s Ocean Series yachts.

The boat is immediately distinctive when you first see it lying at a floating dock, as it was at the show. There are three large square windows in the hull, tinted dark so you can’t see inside; the sheer line is quite flat and modern; the bow, with it’s built-in bowsprit, is not exactly plumb but is more vertical than in earlier designs and similar to the 425’s bow; and, the cabin top is streamlined and low so it fits neatly with the curve of the sheer and the cockpit coaming.

When I saw the boat for the first time, I noticed that, unlike many of the designs coming from Europe, the boat does not have extreme beam that is carried all the way aft, nor does it have hard chines running the length of the hull. Instead, it has a moderate beam that narrows slightly as it flows aft to the transom.  This touch says  a lot about designer Gerry Douglas’ focus on blending traditional American yacht concepts with the benefits of modern hull and deck design. The design isn’t trying to be trendy; instead, the 545 is a modern American classic that will endure the fashion shifts of the next generation.

Gerry Douglas, who is the chief designer and builder at Catalina, is an old friend so it was a pleasure to find him on board and to spend an hour with him going over his latest creation. It has been a long time coming. I saw the first sketch of what was to become the 545 five or six year ago when visiting the Catalina factory in Florida. It was a 50 footer then. But during the design process the boat and the concept grew.

catalina yachts 545

Starting in the cockpit, the new boat has twin wheels, with useful instrument pods, a large drop-leaf table on the center line and bench seats that fold out into wide sunning beds.  All lines lead aft to winches on both sides of the cockpit so a single watch keeper (with an autopilot) can handle the boat alone and from the helms.  The seats aft are large and comfortable for long watches and the coamings are high enough to provide good back support and to keep water out of the cockpit.  You spend a lot of time in a cruising boat’s cockpit, so getting it right is one of a designer’s most important tasks. In the 545, Gerry seems to have got it very right.

The side decks are wide and have a low molded bulwark for a toe rail the keeps dropped tools on deck, funnels water to the scuppers and adds structural strength to the hull-to-deck joint. The side stays are placed inboard on chain plates next to the cabin side. This keeps the genoa sheeting angle as narrow as possible and means that you don’t have to duck under a diagonal when the boat is heeled over. The foredeck is uncluttered and large enough to carry a good-size dinghy when going to sea. The forward locker is huge and roomy enough for spare gear and extra rodes.

As a sailing and cruising machine, the 545 has been set up with a good combination of proven traditional design aspects and innovations that make life aboard easier and sailing more efficient.

Living Aboard

The 545 has a three-cabin, two-head layout below decks with a spacious saloon.  The two quarter cabins are fairly good size; the port cabin has a double berth and the starboard cabin has a pair of single berths that can be slid together to form a double. The saloon has a large L-shaped dinette to port and a bench settee to starboard. The galley is on the port side and has an acre of counter space. The twin sinks are on the boat’s centerline so they will drain on both tacks.

The real story about the 545’s interior is the master cabin forward. It is huge. It has a double berth on the centerline that you can walk around when making the bed or getting in and out. The large head and shower are to starboard and Gerry has added a chaise lounge to port. I’ve never seen one on a boat under 70 feet or so but it makes perfect sense.

As Gerry explained it, the 545 will be a boat for couples with older or grown children and it will be a boat that can accommodate two visiting couples. So, it stands to reason that one or both of the owners will want to have a place of their own where they can escape for a while or for the night. The chaise offers a great place to relax and read that is well insulated from saloon noise by the large hanging lockers.

The finish of the 545, the woodwork, the laminates and fabrics are all modern American yacht style with solid wood doors and drawer fronts, quality hardware, well thought-out lighting and a lifting TV.  Catalina makes a statement about quality and this shows in every new boat.

With 225 gallons of water and 130 gallons of fuel, the 545 will make a great liveaboard boat that you can take well of the beaten track for weeks on end.  With a genset, watermaker, solar panels and even a wind generator, the 545 will take you far and wide in complete self-sufficiency.

  1. Catalina 545: Best Full-Size Cruiser Over 55 Feet
