Endurance 35

  • August 5, 2009

The ketch-rigged Endurance 35 has the typical hallmarks of the range: fl ush deck with doghouse, boomed staysail and, on some boats, a stub bowsprit. The hull is long-keeled and full-bodied, allowing plenty of internal volume. She has a wood or glassfi bre doghouse, which provides full headroom in the after part of the saloon but the deckhead is low further forward. The standard arrangement offered six to seven berths in three cabins with a good galley and a large navigation area. She is not particularly close-winded and needs a good breeze to get going, but handles well and can plough on through weather that would send fl imsier craft scurrying for the nearest bolt-hole.

Endurance 35 image

This is one of the biggest 35' sailboats you'll ever be on.

The Endurance 35 is a classic design that was first introduced in the late 1960s by yacht designer Peter Ibold.

The design was built by a number of different manufacturers over the years, including Southern Ocean Shipyard, Cheoy Lee and the DeKleer Brothers of Vancouver, BC.  This boat was built and finished by DeKleer.

T h e Endurance 35 is a sturdy, full-keeled boat with a displacement of around 16,000 pounds and an LOA of 35 feet with a beam of 10 feet, 2 inches. The boat has a traditional layout, with a large cockpit, a spacious salon, a galley, and a good sized head with shower.

The Endurance 35 is known for its excellent sea-keeping abilities and has been used for long-distance cruising and bluewater sailing. The boat has a reputation for being well-built and reliable, and many owners have done circumnavigations in their Endurance 35s.

Overall, the Endurance 35 is a classic that has stood the test of time. "Comfortably Numb"  is a solid and dependable boat that is well-suited for offshore cruising and long-distance sailing.

Endurance 35

I am looking at buying an endurance 35. I would like to conect with anyone who knows these boats. The one I am looking at was built by De Kleer. Email me at [email protected] John

John. I have never owned but I do love the boats. Great looking. Here is a good link to an Endeavour 35 owner's site. Tom. http://www.endeavourowners.com/boats/e35/e35specs.html

JDin Africa was asking about the Endurance 35 and not the Endeavour 35. The Endurance 35 was 1970's era character boat that was built in a wide range of materials (steel, ferrocement and various fiberglass techniques)and in a wide range of quality levels. Most were built with a high pilot house and flush deck forward. They have always struck me as strange boats, with a silly amount of weight crammed on a oddly short waterline and a lot of top-hamper. During the 70's there was a fad towards boats that were cariactures of traditional cruising boats and the Endurance 35 would fall in that category. Jeff

Ouch! You are right Jeff! Okay so go with the boat I cited...

endurance 35 sailboat

FYI, DeKleer was a Vancouver BC based builder that produced a series of "Fraser" boats (30, 40, 42, 52) as well as the Endurance line. They offered both kit hull and decks as well as finished products. Since many were kit boats the finish quality will vary widely. DeKleer's glass work is reputedly quite solid, but not high tech or light weight. While Jeff H is likely correct that the design itself may not be the best, there are many of these boats cruising coastal and offshore waters in various forms - I have seen ketch rigs, cutters, centercockpit versions as well. They do appeal to the traditionalist crowd but don't really have an interior that matches the apparent volume in the boat.

This is what I am looking for in a a boat. the Endurance seems to get close but I would be happy to hear some ulternatives. Pilot House- I live on the BC coast near Desolation Sound. Much of my cruising will be winter cruises up the inlets and to the Broughton Islands and the central coast. Bell Bella area etc. I am looking for a pilot house as those out flow winds can be very chilly. I would be doing a fair amount of motoring up the inlets, as it would be very slow going otherwise. So a good comfy pilot house is a must. Must sail Ok - I am looking for a boat that although has a decent pilot house, can still sail ok. I fisher or something like that does not do. I do not want a motor sailer. Off shore capable- I would like to be able to sail off shore. I am not expecting to arrive first but safe and fairly comfortably. Durable-I want somthing pretty solid. Price- I need a boat to be under $45,000. The Endurance I am looking at fits this criteria. Live aboard- I want to live aboard about 6 months a year. I do not like fast looking boats. Not sure why. Just my personality. I do like the traditional look as you call it. Here is a link to a web page I put together with boat specs, ictures and a recent survey. I have taken out some of the survey info as i was not sure if there is a confidentiality issue such as surveyers name etc. http://www.kayakingtours.com/sail/endurance_surv.htm I would love to hear your feed back on this boat, or if there is another boat I should be looking at based on my criteria. Cheers, John

Locally available pilothouse types include the Cooper series (316,353,416 etc), Sceptre 41/43s, and the relatively rare North Sea 34. These all probably sail fairly well but may not have the traditional appeal that you seem to like. Capital Yachts built a series of Bill Garden designed pilothouse boats, the Gulf 29, & 32. The 29 is smallish but a good sailing boat and the 32 is very traditional, full keel and fairly heavy. They will be in or close to your price range, as will the smaller Coopers and the North Sea. The Endurance will likely suit your needs too, so if you like the look and she surveys well (she shows well in the pics) it may well be the boat for you.

Enduranc 35 Check the Bill Tripp designs in the Columbia line of boats. Older, heavier sailboats but well desgned and solid.

just curious - I thought endurance also came as a ketch rig - how would that suit you in BC ? a little expensive for me unfortunately... but she sure looks pretty ! kris

endurance 35 The criticism that the endurance 35 was designed to look like oe be a take off of more traditional designs is quite hollow so dont give it much heed. one might argue any vessel after the friendship sloop or glouchester schooner that has a clpper bow and oval arched transom and a decent looking sheerline is a take off. this says nothing really. Clearly Francis Hershoff nor many other excellent naval architects were intimidated by such reasoning. These hull forms all have their advantages and drawbacks however what one needs to keep in mind is what you need in a vessel. the endurance thirty five is in fact well cruised and in the sloop or cutter format quite easy to handle with plenty of deck space..a stable helm..and fairly low windage given the value of a good sized pilothouse and dodger in the less gentle or sun baked climes. Clearly one cannot have it all. and speed is not the be all and end all when so many factors such as the tide floe. cleanliness of the bottom..condition of the rig...trim of the sails and helmsmanship all contribute to the equation. It is easy to criticize a thirty or thirty five foot vessel from the deck of a fifty foot craft however the main thing is to get what works for you in the conditions you sail in. and that meets basic criteria of design. beauty is often overlooked but as howard chapell once mentioned you can call ugly beautiful all you want but it is still ugly. The endurance 35 doesnt look at all bad. and as Joshua Slocum once quipped..when fitting out the Spray (a highly criticized design)..you can often tell a good vessel by a blow of the eye. cheers ,ike wright shipwright and builder tofino bc

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A collaboration between Bob Berg of Flying Dutchman, the design genius of Bob Perry and a Taiwanese boatyard that built fishing boats brought about the Baba 30, a serious go-anywhere boat packed into a diminutive 30 feet on deck. Traditionally styled, she is a beautifully proportioned double-ender with a full keel that’s a heavy weather performer. With excellent construction and a high end interior, Baba 30s have aged well, demanding a relatively high resale value  and  have become a favorite among cruising couples.

The Baba 30 was introduced in 1976 as a response to the unprecedented success of the Westsail 32 which with the help of a Time Magazine lifestyle feature is generally credited for creating the cruising boat boom of the 1970s.

Bob Berg of Flying Dutchman International enlisted Bob Perry to design the boat and contracted construction to a little known boatyard in Tainan City, Taiwan called Shing Sheng who’s first first foray from fishing boats to sailboats was a sophisticated 27ft racer built for a Japanese customer. The Baba 30 became the second yacht to be produced by Shing Sheng. It’s said that Perry had to kick chickens out of the way when walking to the yard in those early years. It was a place where the workers rechristened Bob Berg with the nickname “Baba”, affectionately meaning father; it was catchy enough to stick for the boat as well. By 1979 Shing Shen moved from An-Ping Quay to purpose built facilities in An-Ping Industrial Estate and a new name, “Ta Shing” was adopted.

Production ended in 1985 and although hull numbers go up to #246, there was a gap in numbering between #125 and #201 resulting in a total production count of around 170 boats. During this time the Baba 30 was joined by two other Perry designed stablemates, the Baba 35 .

The Baba 30 concept was later evolved by Bob Berg using designer Gary Grant into the Panda 34 and chose boatyard Hsin Hang to build the boat in Northern Taiwan. While Ta Shing themselves commissioned Perry to design the Tashiba 31 , an all new boat, one that Perry himself considers one of his best full keel designs, but is often mistaken as a revised Baba 30.

As a side note, in 1983 the Shing Sheng name was revived by Paul Wang, a senior partner in Ta Shing. Paul went on to build a number of Gary Grant designs including the Norseman 40 in his custom built facility in An-Ping Industrial District.

Configuration and Layout

There’s no questioning that this is a traditional full keel double-ender of Aitkens and Colin Archer heritage. The boat is nicely proportioned with beautifully balanced overhangs, a sweeping sheer, and the Perry favorite; a traditional canoe stern. A four foot bowsprit sits up front and from the mast hangs a cutter rig boasting a healthy 504 sq. ft. of sail.

John Kretschmer writing for Sailing Magazine commented, “it’s a big boat trapped in a short body” and certainly the displacement and ballast numbers are more akin to boats in the 35ft range. The cockpit is small, giving up most of the space to an expansive interior boasting 6′ 4″ of headroom. The layout down below has blue water in mind; there’s a seagoing berth and chart table combo on the starboard quarter and a large U-shaped seagoing galley to port. Two additional berths are provided in the saloon by way of settees either side of the saloon table. On some boats the table can fold away opening up the saloon, as per Perry’s original plans. The forward cabin came in two options, either a V-berth or a double berth which found favor in the East Coast. The quality of workmanship is superb and teak is abundantly used.

Construction

The Baba 30’s GRP hull follows the same layup schedule as the Valiant 32, with hull thicknesses running from just over a quarter of an inch near the topsides, to over a third of an inch near the bilges and grows to over half an inch in the tuck and keel. A single casting of iron is used as ballast which is encapsulated in GRP.

The hull to deck join is glued and through-bolted with a teak caprail sitting above the join. Early decks were cored with end-grain, kiln-dried, luan (philippine mahogany) affixed in 2 x 2 x 0.6 inch pieces, laid in filled polyester resin, later vessels utilized end-grain balsa on scrim with engineered kerfs (Baltec Contour core). Areas with through-deck fittings were locally cored in high quality marine plywood (made in Taiwan out of mahogany with waterproof glue, and boil-tested). All Baba 30 decks had a molded non-skid pattern, Thiokol-bedded teak decking was an option.

Bulkheads were of marine plywood that were staved with teak battens of 2 inches width, and much later, towards the end of production, models were available with teak veneered bulkheads as a means of reducing cost.

Early boats had wooden spars, of oregon and B.C. hemlock which do need regular care, but properly maintained will last the life of the yacht; owners tend to paint them (bad), and often do not understand that upkeep is required.

There has been an unconfirmed report of asbestos used in the galley. Tim Ellis who oversaw production of the Baba 30 from 1977 comments, “If woven asbestos was used, it was behind the stainless steel liner of the stove insert. Asbestos poses no threat in this situation and should not be disturbed. It is the handling and disposal of asbestos that requires care. To be honest, I don’t recall if we used it or not”

As a blue water cruiser, the Baba 30 will carry its crew in safety, and despite its small size, in relative comfort. The boat is well balanced and is relatively stiff. The best point of sail is on a reach with the first reef thrown in at a respectable 20 knots. In storm conditions the boat heaves-to beautifully and the boat is safe and dry.

Most owners report the boat under performs in light airs, to windward do not expect to make much headway in less than 6 knots of wind; 12-18 knots is her element. It’s worth noting Perry disagrees, commenting that the hull though pudgy, is easily driven, and under well trimmed sails can move very nicely in light airs.

Buyers Notes

As with many boats older than 25 years, have your surveyor check items such as chainplates, areas of balsa coring for rot and if applicable, the teak and the wooden mast. Overall, the Baba 30s have aged well, probably better than most boats of this era due to their excellent build quality.

Most Baba 30 owners have replaced the original mild steel 30 gallon fuel tank, which was susceptible to corrosion mounted in the bilge. The tank removes easily in half an afternoon and a new one fabricated from $600 to $1000 from a variety of materials. It’s worth noting the stainless steel water tanks and even the engine are easily removable in the Baba 30, sometimes a big job in other boats.

Resale value has remained high for a boat of its size, but when comparing with other boats in its price range, the 30 offers good value. The value of a Baba 30 will depend largely on the owner care received over the years, as of 2010 the asking price is in the range of $50k-95k USD.

It’s recommended prospective buyers contact the Baba Owners Group at for advice, they run a Yahoo discussion group that’s worth checking out.

Sea Turtle IV

A very rare opportunity to acquire a proven rugged offshore vessel recently returned from a 10 year circumnavigation. Meticulously maintained by knowledgeable and fastidious owners who have just completed a comprehensive refit. Everything is clean, clean, clean. Sea Turtle is now ready to cast off and go again to any corner of the globe you choose!  Almost new Beta diesel, wind generator, solar panels, water-maker, autopilot, wind steering and SSB with Pactor.  Its all here. Its all ready to go.

Sea Turtle with the current owners have been awarded numerous Blue Water Cruising Association awards and have completed over 50,000 NM of blue water cruising.  They and Sea Turtle have visited some of the most distant and exotic ports of the world during their10 year meandering circumnavigation, well documented in their blog.

The Endurance 35 design by Peter Ibold won the “Best Cruising Design” award several years in a row and resulted in hundreds being manufactured around the world. DeKleer Bros in Vancouver built over 65 Endurances here on West Coast, but only 3 Center Cockpit Offshore models. Rugged, beefed up and customized, they are very serious blue-water cruisers. The comfortable and iconic Endurance design can be seen in most far-flung ports and anchorages of the world and dozens of standard Endurances have circumnavigated. Endurances are iconic long distance cruisers with a highly respected offshore reputation.

Charming and complete motorsailer with lots of possibilities for in and offshore cruising. Fine for long sailing or weekend trips with the family. The Endurance 35 has a nice wooden interior, enclosed cockpit and an inside steering position. So even when the weather is tough, you can sail with the heating on. Fitted out with a second generation engine, sails, electronics etc, the Endurance 35 is ready to explore new horizons. This stable and comfortable sailor is now sharply priced.

back in the 70's... name of the was 'June 8'. They finished her off beautifully and buddy boated around Island with them. They left us in Victoria, BC and headed to , sailed the islands, had a child and ended up about 2 years later nearly losing the in the that decimated the fleet in Cabo San Lucas in the early eighties.
Caught up with them again in and spent time sailing the Bay with them.
It was a rig, cut away forefoot, very roomy below and wonderful visiblity from the . Seakindly, great in a blow but not the fastest mouse in the cage.
My guess is she would well suited for coastal passagemaking in OZ and very safe to take to if you were inclined... hope this helps, Capt Phil

Dear Chuck,
Our decision to build the Endurance 35 was based on a long list of positive factors:

1) It was the winning design in an international competition for the ultimate all-weather cruising boat capable of going anywhere and being handled by a small crew. We wanted a
boat large enough to do whatever we wanted, to be a liveaboard, and yet small enough to be easily handled. The design parameters matched our desires perfectly.

2) It had received good reviews in "Yachting" and "Motorboating and Sailing", and had been featured in Arthur Beiser's book The Proper Yacht

3) It had a number of attractive layouts

4) It could be rigged either as a ketch or cutter

5) It had already proven itself worthy of the title Endurance, and I wanted a boat capable of high-latitude sailing

6) My wife, Jean, however didn't enjoy being cold and wet, so the inside steering station not only gave us a steering backup, but warmth and comfort.

7) Jean was in concrete research, so we knew exactly what ferrocement is capable of, and it was our material of choice. Besides some bad publicity about backyard ferro boats, we knew both good and bad boats could be built in any material. The end result was the product of the perseverance and standards of the builder, not the material.

Having chosen the boat, however, we decided to take a short-cut and had the hull built by Ferro Boatbuilders in Maryland. They obtained the plans from Peter Ibold, the
designer, and did the hull and deck as an integral unit, eliminating the worrisome hull-deck joint. Lab and engineering tests were done on the materials and pieces from the hull at each stage.

Both because I'm a safety-at-sea fanatic and it was to be our home, we went with only the best equipment and materials---silicon bronze, 316 stainless steel, Westerbeke
diesel, Edson steering, Dickinson stove/oven/heater, teak outside, Harborlite, white oak and cherry inside, etc. The hull was faired using the same materials used on America's
Cup and most other one-off boats giving us a finish to rival any quality hull.

Then reality intervened. The boat was about half-completed when Jean was diagnosed with Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. She'd had pneumonia 8-years in a row
and her health was deteriorating much too fast. Finally, the doctor gave her a choice. "Have your affairs in order or be out of the Mid-Atlantic area before the coming winter."
We moved to Florida, leaving our home to our oldest son and abandoning the boat. We've been in Florida ten years, Jean's health has improved, but we still can't escape the
fact that she'll never go back to sea for any time, we'd never live aboard, there'd be no high-latitude sailing. In short, we and the boat are unfortunately traveling separate paths, and it makes sense to let her go to someone who can complete her and realize her potential.

In November, our son decided to sell the house, so we moved the Endurance to near St. Augustine, Florida, giving me the change to get her back in peak condition. Right now her value is estimated at $125,000. I have $28,000 in the hull, tanks, shafts, rudder, engine, etc., and over $55,000 available in materials and equipment, a lot of what's needed to complete assembly. I'll let her go for $12,000 for the hull and pieces integral to it (bulkheads, sole bearers, tanks, installed ballast, custom stainless work, rudder), or $16,900 for that plus installed engine and bed, shaft, panel, stainless aqua-lift muffler, wiring harness, etc., or $28,000 for everything. A complete 4-page list of equipment and study package is available.
