True North Launches New 34 Outboard Express

True North,  now owned by Catalina, just introduced its all-new 34 Outboard Express at the Annapolis show. The new 34 has a one-level open plan in the pilothouse and cockpit, with the galley up, and it’s driven by twin 300-hp outboards.

With its Downeast lines, dating to an earlier lobster boat heritage, the True North 34 is a versatile cruiser with a spacious cockpit and a single cabin and head below. Its looks go back to the original True North, a 38, launched by the Pearson Marine Group, in 2001.

The original True Norths were called the SUVs of the water, and they came with inboard power. They had a distinctive sloping transom, with clam-shell doors that opened wide so you could slide in a dinghy, a small sailboat, or any number of water toys.

Over the years, True North had some ownership changes, and Catalina Yachts, which had been making sailboats for more than 50 years, bought the company in 2019 and moved it from Rhode Island to Largo, Florida.

The new 34 has the original’s sharp bow to slice through the water, and a balanced hull with flatter aft sections to provide a comfortable ride in various sea conditions.. The hull is hand laid with vinylester resin in a barrier coat, and hand-crafted varnished teak interiors.

The outboards make it fast and maneuverable, and they also mean you can operate the boat in thin water in the Bahamas, for example, the Chesapeake, or anywhere else. Trim the outboards up, and you can head for a nearby beach for a picnic.

The cockpit has an aft bench seat across the transom, and an aft-facing seat forward. The helm deck, protected by a hardtop, has the galley to starboard, an L-shaped settee on the port side, a single helm seat forward to starboard, opposite a two-person companion seat to port. Below, a V-berth is forward, with an enclosed head and shower.

Catalina say it’s planning a larger True North 39 for next year, also powered by twin outboards.

Boats can bring people together better than any other activity. Eating and socializing with friends and family is more than half the fun. All current True North owners agree that one of the most popular features of the boat’s “open concept” interior is the “galley-up” configuration, and the Outboard Express is no different. Serious cooks love the large and well-equipped galley and everybody loves being up in the center of the action.

Design Makes the Difference

The Outboard Express performs exceptionally well on flat water in fair weather. But its unique ability to handle rough weather and stormy sea conditions is one of the many elements that sets this boat apart. The sharp, plumb bow slices through the waves instead of pounding on top of them when the seas build. The hull’s balanced displacement and flatter aft sections deliver a rock-solid ride in virtually all weather conditions. And since the hull design is inspired by boats that work all year long in all sorts of conditions, we can almost guarantee you won’t miss a day on the water (or be stranded in port) when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

The True North 34 Outboard Express is built by highly experienced craftsmen in Largo, Florida, and is the brainchild of boat builders who have a distinguished record of helping to create some of the most successful powerboats and sailboats of the last 25 years. EYC Foundation Announces 2024 Marine Wizards Honorees

The EYC Foundation has announced the 2024 Marine Wizards. The Foundation aims to inspire and support youth in pursuing careers in the marine and maritime fields and honors current industry leaders with Marine Wizard status.

A Marine Wizard is recognized for exceptional skills in the marine trades, excellent customer service, and being considered “the best of the best” in the industry. New Marine Wizards are recognized every two years based on nominations from the boating public and industry peers, with recipients selected by a Foundation-appointed committee. Marine Wizards receive an honorary two-year membership to the Eastport Yacht Club, courtesy of EYC.

“We heard so many great stories about so many exceptional folks, but the committee unanimously agreed these five are truly outstanding in both skill set and service,” said Marine Wizard committee chair, Deanna Sansbury.

The 2024 Marine Wizards and testimonials from their clients are:

Jerome Berger of True North Yachting: A “guru for crafting solutions to difficult problems,” and “truly gifted, and more so, he cares.”

Aaron Bradley of Bradley Marine Services: A “fantastic troubleshooter” who “does what he says he is going to do.”

Ted Haaland of Haaland Marine: Able to “tackle any boat problem” and a “walking encyclopedia for boats” with a wealth of knowledge he shares with clients.

Matt Marshall of Annapolis Cruiser: The “BEST marine air conditioning tech in the industry,” who “takes the time to explain the issue to customers and talk through the solutions.”

Tyler Ruth of Annapolis Rigging: “Very focused and dedicated to excellence,” who “takes his craft to the next level.”

The EYC Foundation, the charitable arm of the Eastport Yacht Club, is a 501(c)3 all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to charitable and educational purposes. Details about this year’s auction, starting in late August, will be available soon and will support the continuation of this and other Foundation programs.
