Historically there have essentially been three choices in sail cloth (other than exotic racing fabrics). Dacron, which is affordable, is plain white, has a reasonable life span, and is easy to handle in lighter weights, but has higher stretch and less performance than more modern fabrics. Racing Laminates, which are very light weight, moderately expensive, flashy looking, offer high performance, and are very fragile. Cruising Laminates, which combine the basic construction of a racing laminate with an outer layer of woven Dacron to improve durability. These fabrics are fairly expensive, offer good performance, tend to be somewhat stiff to handle and look essentially like a Dacron sail.

Enter Lite Skin, an all new 6 layer laminate from Dimension Polyant. Lite Skin offers a strength to weight ratio high enough to be a legitimate race fabric, but with such excellent durability and ease of care that it makes a great high end cruising fabric as well. As an added bonus Lite Skin is reasonably priced and has a really cool look. All BWY Lite Skin sails have the premium finish and features you would expect in a high end sail. For an overview of the design and construction of this particular sail click on the "Extended Information" tab. For more information about the Lite Skin technology click on the "Technical Specs" tab.

The same design as the standard spinnaker, but made to order in your choice of colors
Does not include sheets.

This sail is our most popular option, and a big upgrade from the economy sail at a really good price. The heavier cloth will hold its good shape much longer through the life of the sail. Includes one reef at 42" and one at 84" rather than the factory sail that had one very deep reef, essentially the second reef with the first reef missing. This gives you the ability to single reef sooner (about 12 - 14 Kts.) and continue to sail comfortably and efficiently in higher winds when double reefed. Also includes jack lines and "dogbone" tack reef fittings for easier reefing. This sail has a loose foot, meaning that the sail is attached to the boom at the tack and with a single heavy outhaul slide. The economy sail has no reef point, and is lighter weight.

This is a BWY Exclusive sail, typically in inventory and available to ship.

This daggerboard is grey barrier coat. It can be bottom painted, just roll on the paint! It is also available with a white gelcoat and polished finish instead of the standard grey barrier coat. The smoother board is more performance oriented.

This item uses $79 flat rate shipping, shown at checkout for domestic shipments. If this is shipping international it will probably not show the correct rate and we will have to contact you with the shipping amount after the order is placed. Canada is usually about $138, other countries will usually be higher than that.

A full-radial sail pattern, very cool looking! The price is for the sail alone. You will need sheets, tack hardware, and halyard. We recommend raising your existing halyard if you have roller furling for you headsail, or installing a new halyard 16-24" above your current headstay. This allows the sail to fly with less interference with the headstay and headsail. On the 26M a bow sprit is a nice way to also get less interference with the headstay.
Venture 24/224, Venture 25, MacGregor 25, 26C & 26D requires halyard to be raised 24" above headstay.

Does not include sheets
excellent UV protection but does not add as much weight to the sail as an acrylic (Sunbrella) cover. Acrylic covers are very heavy and change shape differently than the rest of the sail over time so you end up with an intact UV strip that has ruined the shape of an otherwise healthy sail. If you mostly trailer your boat we recommend you purchase the version of this sail that comes without a UV cover and use our pull up sock type cover which provides both UV protection while moored and protection from dirt and abrasion while trailering, this gives you the best protection and the best sailing performance.

These sails feature a hydraulically pressed stainless steel ring for the clew, and reinforced nylon webbing for the head and tack to allow a strong but flexible connection to your furler.

Match up to your old rudder or bracket to drill. These rudders are fiberglass, made with an improved airfoil shape. 1 year warranty is extended to the original boat owner.

Nice way to handle your mainsail! This allows you to just lower the mainsail directly into the mainsail cover and zip the top closed. Lazy jacks contain the sail on the way down. Best to use along with halyards led aft.

The cover is bolt rope on the bottom which inserts into the boom, the sail becomes loose footed. This means that your mainsail will no longer be completely attached along the foot to the boom. The sail will be attached at the same forward attachment you now have and the Kit includes the outhaul slide you will need to attach at the aft end of the boom. Nicely contains your sail when the boom is removed for trailering. Kit includes two blocks for the mast and all lazy jack hardware.

This system requires a notch system in the mast for mainsail loading, this allows the sail to stack all the way down to the boom. If you have the spread mast and sail stop you will need to convert. To convert you will need to close the spread, cut in a notch and purchase a mast gate. To close the spread you will place a 2X4 on top of the spread section on the mast and pound with a hammer until flat.

This is a custom order, please specify the color you would like. Takes 2-6 weeks.

PLEASE CALL IF YOU'D LIKE A COLOR OTHER THAN BLACK. COLORS CAN BE FOUND ON THE SUNBRELLA CANVAS WEBSITE.

Made with high quality 5 OZ High Modulus Dacron in a cross cut design. This sails feature all stainless steel corner rings hydraulically pressed into the sail as well as larger corner reinforcements. High quality bronze push style hanks are used to connect to the forestay. While slightly heavier and stiffer to handle than the factory sails, these sails will last much longer, perform better through a larger wind range (your boat will go faster and heel less), and hold their shape better in high winds than the factory sails so you won't have to reef or change down to a small headsail as often.

These sails feature a hydraulically pressed stainless steel ring for the clew, and reinforced nylon webbing for the head and tack to allow a strong but flexible connection.

These sails feature a hydraulically pressed stainless steel ring for the clew, and reinforced nylon webbing for the head and tack to allow a strong but flexible connection to your furler.

Roller Furling ready with #6 luff tape, fits CDI furling units and other units of that size. The 100% Jib will roll out to reach the mast, but does not reach past. For the larger sail you will need the 150% Genoa. The jib will give you quicker and easier tacks, and allow you to sail into the wind, point, higher than the genoa. This sail has a white UV cover, but we recommend for long term storage to use the hoist up sock / genoa cover to protect it from sun exposure and to protect it while trailering.

Roller Furling ready with #6 luff tape, for CDI furling units and other units with that size. The 100% Jib rolls out to reach the mast but does not go past. Can be rolled and used smaller. The Jib allows you to sail closer to the wind, point higher, and tack faster than the genoa sail (larger reaching past the mast). The heavier weight will give you good performance and hold its shape longer than the standard factory sail which is much lighter weight. Easy to use. This sail has no UV cover and we recommend purchasing the hoist up style jib cover for it. Without UV protection you will need to remove the sail when you are finished sailing and store out of the sun. Or easily pull up the hoist on sock / jib cover. (picture shows a jib, but on a different boat)

A definite upgrade from your old factory sails, but still very reasonably priced. Made with high quality 5 OZ High Modulus Dacron in a cross cut design. While slightly heavier and stiffer to handle than the factory sails, this sail will last much longer, perform better through a larger wind range (your boat will go faster and heel less), and hold their shape better in high winds than the factory sails, so you won't have to reef as often. This is a 100% Jib, the sail does not reach past the mast. The larger sail that reaches past the mast is called a Genoa. Now equipped with upgraded Stainless Steel Snap Hanks to attach to your headstay, super durable and easy to use with one hand. Please call if you have questions.

) if you are re-doing your rigging.

The 26S used some shorter uppers to bring the rig forward a little bit after it was discovered that this improved performance. If you are ordering for a 26D that's fine, we will use the slightly altered lengths to bring your mast forward, you won't have to change any other parts or alter any hardware.

The "add" option refers to the upgraded forestay. The standard is 1/8" but the 5/32" upgrade is the same thickness as the side shrouds. We recommend using this if you usually keep the mast up on your boat.

Note that we use a generic picture for rigging so it may not be of the exact wires your boat will get, but we will make and send you the correct rigging!

It follows then, that fewer still will have your problem of expensive cushions suffering from old-age. I have a single closed-cell cushion, the helm-hump from C-Cushions. But having invested 150 bucks or so, it's stored in the cabin, suffering no significant UV exposure. I can't imagine exactly how they manage to apply such a durable coating, but also can't imagine there will be an easy, backyard alternative. Please be sure to post your solution.

The 27 Best LGBTQ+ Books to Read (or Revisit) This Pride

Products are independently selected by our editors. We may earn an affiliate commission from links.

Trying to list the very best LGBTQ+ books—or even the LGBTQ+ authors who have changed my life—is, it turns out, a near-painful task. As a lifelong book nerd who came out in my mid-20s and promptly set out to devour every book I’d missed about queer and trans culture, I can attest that it is, in fact, impossible to read everything. That said, it’s a lot easier to be out and proud when you have some of the greatest writers and thinkers in literary history figuratively holding your hand.

To that end, Vogue has rounded up 27 of the greatest books of all time by queer, trans, and gender-nonconforming writers. Whether you’re an queer-fiction pro revisiting old favorites or a newly out member of the community looking to brush up, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll find at least one book on this list to treasure.

Orlando by Virginia Woolf (1928)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, and Art

Not only was this book inspired by the tumultuous life of Woolf’s longtime lover Vita Sackville-West, but it’s also considered to be one of the earliest examples of trans fiction. In the novel, a British nobleman undergoes a sex change, and proceeds to live for more than 300 years without aging. (Nonbinary actor Emma Corrin starred in a London stage adaptation of the book in 2022, bringing new life to Woolf’s century-old tale.)

The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (1952)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Furniture, Table, Adult, Person, Publication, Book, Face, and Head

The Price of Salt

If you tend to watch Todd Haynes’s 2015 film Carol each Christmas, you a) are most definitely gay and b) probably already have some familiarity with the source material: Highsmith’s 1950s romance novel follows two women in what one might call an age-gap relationship as they take a cross-country road trip and try to figure out what they mean to one another.

Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin (1956)

Image may contain: Chair, Furniture, Cup, Glass, Alcohol, Beer, Beverage, Advertisement, Person, and Bottle

Giovanni's Room

Arguably the best-known and most enduring portrait of Black queer masculinity in Western literature, this novel concerns itself primarily with the life of David, an American who becomes entangled in an affair with an Italian man he meets at a Parisian gay bar. (Anecdotally, one of my all-time favorite quotes about the nature of belonging comes from Giovanni’s Room : “Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition.”)

The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions by Larry Mitchell (1977)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Book, and Publication

The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions

Part gay manifesto, part collection of fantasitcal vignettes, Mitchell’s book is one of the defining pieces of 1970s queer literature. Originally self-published, it was out of print for years before its first republication in 2016. (It’s worth trying to track down a copy of the 2019 reissue, however, which was put out by Nightboat Books and features a stunning preface by artist Tourmaline .)

The Color Purple by Alice Walker (1982)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Novel, Advertisement, Poster, Adult, and Person

The Color Purple

If you’ve only ever seen the 1985 Spielberg film of the same name (or the 2023 version , directed by Blitz Bazawule), it’s definitely worth reading Walker’s original depiction of the long-standing and richly, gorgeously queer bond between protagonist Celie and her fiercely independent, wildly rebellious “friend” Shug Avery. (Spielberg has admitted that he could have depicted Celie and Shug’s relationship more thoughtfully onscreen, but at least we’ll always have the book.)

Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde (1982)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Adult, Person, Publication, Book, and Head

Zami: A New Spelling of My Name

This biomythography by Lorde—one of history’s leading Black lesbian and feminist thinkers—takes its name from a Caribbean word for what Lorde describes as “women who work together as friends and lovers.” The author’s description of pursuing queer love and finding her community amid the lesbian scene of Cuernavaca, Mexico, during the Cold War era is impossible to forget.

Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison (1992)

Image may contain: Baby, Person, Publication, and Text

Bastard Out Of Carolina

The Southern queer experience (if, indeed, there is such a unified thing) often gets short shrift in the dominant literary fold, but Allison’s semi-autobiographical novel—a moving and often painful coming-of-age story about surviving poverty, violence, and familial abuse—is richly worth reading for its depiction of the lesbian struggle in 1950s South Carolina.

Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg (1993)

Image may contain: Leslie Feinberg, Book, Publication, Face, Head, Person, Photography, Portrait, Adult, and Novel

Stone Butch Blues

The proof of Feinberg’s staunch commitment to social justice and queer and trans liberation is, in some ways, encapsulated by the fact that hir autobiographical novel is available for free on Feinberg’s own website, making this story about the often-simultaneous violence and joy faced by gender-nonconforming individuals available to the young members of the LGBTQ+ community who might most need to read it.

Chelsea Girls by Eileen Myles (1994)

Image may contain: Eileen Myles, Face, Head, Person, Photography, Portrait, Adult, Advertisement, and Poster

Chelsea Girls

“Apart from the fact of trying to figure out if Chelsea Girls is a novel or a memoir or a collection of stories (or whether it’s really even a book at all), I think I mainly want to tell you that in the time of the writing of Chelsea Girls —which was long: 1980 to 1993 was the actual time of the composition of the thing—I mainly needed to say what I thought was real,” Myles has written of this groundbreaking work about queerness, lust, violence, and desire in the East Village.

Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai (1994)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Book, Publication, and Person

This Sri Lanka-set coming-of-age memoir has a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction to its name, and rightfully so; Selvadurai’s depiction of gay protagonist Arjie Chelvaratnam’s journey toward personal and societal acceptance within his wealthy Tamil family against the backdrop of the anti-Tamil “Black July” pogroms of 1983 is intensely affecting.

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (2006)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Advertisement, Poster, and Person

If you’ve ever heard a rendition of “Ring of Keys” at queeraoke and wanted to know the story behind it, look no further than Bechdel’s graphic memoir, which finds her younger self trying to work up the courage to come out and find queer love and creative fulfillment while grieving the unexpected loss of her father—himself a closeted gay man—to suicide.

Nevada by Imogen Binnie (2013)

Image may contain: Leaf, Plant, and Weed

Described by author Isle McElroy as “a novel that made the trans experience a human experience, showing that we are just as lovable and maddening and real as any other complicated subject in fiction,” Nevada —Binnie’s chronicle of a trans woman living in Brooklyn who embarks on a West Coast road trip—has been widely credited with ushering in a sea-change in trans literature.

Redefining Realness by Janet Mock (2014)

Image may contain: Janet Mock, Publication, Book, Adult, Person, and Advertisement

Redefining Realness

Queer and trans memoirs are a booming genre today, but when Mock first released Redefining Realness in 2014, it stood apart as one of the few mainstream personal literary narratives centered around a Black trans woman's journey toward self-discovery and the healing power of a like-minded community. (Luckily, it has since been joined on its shelf by Raquel Willis’s memoir, The Risk It Takes to Bloom , among others.)

Mean by Myriam Gurba (2017)

Image may contain: City, Road, Street, Urban, Art, Painting, Advertisement, Bus Stop, Outdoors, Utility Pole, and Sign

Gurba’s identity as a queer, mixed-race Chicana permeates her fascination with meanness as a cultural trope, an art form, and a kind of saving grace, leading to such delicious observations as: “Being mean to boys is fun and a second-wave feminist duty. Being rude to men who deserve it is a holy mission. Sisterhood is powerful, but being a bitch is more exhilarating. Being a bitch is spectacular.”

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi (2018)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Advertisement, Poster, Animal, Cattle, Cow, Livestock, and Mammal

Igbo religious deities, modern-day sexual trauma, splintered selves, and anxiety-riddled spirals come together in this debut novel from Emezi, one of Nigeria’s best-known and most widely read nonbinary authors. A TV adaptation is allegedly in the works from FX , suggesting that protagonist Ada’s story may soon transcend the page.

How to Write An Autobiographical Novel , Alexander Chee (2018)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Adult, Person, Face, Head, Advertisement, and Poster

How to Write an Autobiographical Novel

Chee paints an unforgettable portrait of his life as “a son, a gay man, a Korean American, an artist, an activist, a lover, and a friend” in this collection of essays, which touches upon everything from grieving the loss of too many friends to AIDS to tarot-reading to attempting to make it in New York City by cater-waitering at conservative cocktail parties (and much more that you’ll have to crack the book’s bright red spine to discover for yourself).

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe (2019)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Book, Publication, Poster, Person, Water, Face, and Head

Gender Queer

In a world where trans and gender-nonconforming identities are still criminalized , Kobabe’s illustrated account of their life as a nonbinary person living in contemporary America balances deeply necessary social context with narrative specificity and visual appeal. (If the execrable hate group Moms For Liberty is trying to ban it , you know it must be worth reading.)

The Stonewall Reader , ed. New York Public Library and Jason Baumann (2019)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, People, Person, Adult, Wedding, Crowd, Face, Head, and Baby

The Stonewall Reader

The Stonewall riots of 1969 are frequently cited as a flashpoint in American queer and trans history, but this deep dive into the vibrant LGBTQ+ culture that led to Stonewall adds a new layer of complexity to the event with first-person accounts and diary entries from activists representing groups including the Mattachine Society NY, the Gay Activists Alliance, and the Gay Liberation Front.

In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (2019)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Person, Advertisement, Poster, Adult, and Novel

In the Dream House

In this lyrical and deeply moving memoir, Machado plumbs the depths of lesbian and bisexual history to find context for her own experience falling in love and attempting to build a life with an erratic and increasingly abusive female partner. Her story feels full of potential to help fellow queer sufferers of intimate partner violence know that they aren’t alone with their pain, no matter how great it may be.

We Both Laughed in Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan, ed. Ellis Martin and Zach Ozma (2019)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Business Card, Paper, and Text

We Both Laughed in Pleasure

Sullivan’s meticulously maintained journals (in which he first began recording the details of his life at age of 11) serve as the basis for this unmissable and wide-ranging collection, which paints a vivid portrait of a trans gay man’s quest for love, revolution, and self-understanding in San Francisco across the second half of the 20th century. If you’ve ever wanted to better understand transmasculine identity, this is most definitely the book for you.

Las Malas by Camila Sosa Villada (2019)

Image may contain: Advertisement, Poster, Animal, and Bird

“I think [ Las Malas ] is a masterpiece,” Love the World or Get Killed Trying author Alvina Chamberland told Vogue in May, and it’s not hard to see why. The fairytale-slash-horror-story revolves around a group of Latin American trans women who perform street-based sex work in an Argentinean park, weaving magical realism into a biting portrait of the modern world.

Gay Bar: Why We Went Out by Jeremy Atherton Lin (2021)

Image may contain: Publication, Adult, Person, Book, Advertisement, Poster, Back, and Body Part

Gay Bar: Why We Went Out

If you’ve ever heeded the band Muna’s call to “dance in the middle of a gay bar,” this expert combination of memoir and cultural history—which is at once a response to the closure of many LGBTQ+ establishments across America and a joyful reminder to keep patronizing the remaining physical places that make us feel most queer and most alive—might just be your ideal going-out book.

You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat (2021)

Image may contain: Book, Publication, Novel, Advertisement, Poster, Ball, Basketball, Basketball (Ball), and Sport

You Exist Too Much

A young Palestinian-American woman makes her way from Bethlehem to Brooklyn and delves into her first serious queer romance in this gorgeously written debut novel that deals expertly with its protagonist’s exploration of love, lust, bisexual identity, internalized homophobia, disordered eating, healing from trauma, and so much more.

Big Girl by Mecca Jamilah Sullivan (2022)

Sullivan’s protagonist, Malaya Clondon, is a fat Black girl in a rapidly gentrifying New York City that would prefer her smaller. This central tension—as well as the schism between her mother’s strict food rules and Malaya’s own growing appetite for food, community, and queer love—animates the book thoroughly and unforgettably, leaving this fat, queer reader wishing she’d come across Big Girl much earlier in life.

Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H (2023)

Hijab Butch Blues

Two decades after the publication of Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues , author Lamya H provides a memoir-in-essays that speaks to a different, though no less vital, facet of queer and trans identity. The Late Americans

Chosen family can get short shrift in mainstream American society, but it’s long been one of the animating forces of LGBTQ+ life. Taylor places it at the front and center of this crackling campus novel that interrogates the ways in which young people live—together, separately, and everything in between—when the question of who they will become looms larger than almost anything else in their day-to-day existences.

A Short History of Trans Misogyny

Anyone hoping to gain a greater understanding of the heavy and systemic sociocultural forces that make this world deeply unsafe for trans women, and particularly trans women of color, would do well to spend some time with A Short History of Trans Misogyny. In this recently released yet already culturally indelible book, Gill-Peterson surveys trans communities around the world and provides a history of anti-trans hatred that is both unique and vital in its specificity.

Voices of Pride: The 10 Most Famous LGBTQ Authors You Need to Read!

Diving into the kaleidoscope of queer stories, amplifying LGBTQ+ authors one narrative at a time.

The special thing about authors in the genre of LGBTQ-related writing is that the books are – more often than not – at least partially autobiographical. This means that the words on their pages are no mere story. They are artistically reinterpreted experiences from real life, fueled with true emotions and actual memories, and this adds a touch to the genre that very few others have.

That isn’t to say that autobiographical works are the only ones worth reading and appreciating. All forms of LGBT writing are valuable elements of representation and represent valuable fractions of the uncontainable creativity that makes the community so special.

Fiction as a form of artistic expression is a large part of what makes human culture so valuable and indispensable. The ability to create and imagine with our minds is a pretty seriously underrated superpower but remains something that we’ve all experimented with over time regardless.

Not only is artistic expression valuable, but the societal statements made in pieces of LGBT writing have also proved to be indispensable throughout history. It induces thought, spreads the concepts of equal love, and unearths the things that would stay buried were it not for the power of literature. It puts straight people in gay people’s shoes, and it allows gay people to relate and resonate with media in a way that they never could if it were not for the works of LGBT authors.

The idealism and retrospective reflection in the works of some of the most famous LGBTQ authors, as showcased in this list, wield a potent influence in propelling our world towards progress. With each turn of the page in their best gay memoirs , we find narratives that not only illuminate personal journeys but also advocate for societal acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ experiences. As time progresses and our world gradually embraces more inclusive attitudes towards LGBT-related topics, may the aspirations these authors envisioned for their lives become increasingly attainable for all.

With that said, and now that we understand the importance of queer writers, let us explore these legends of days past and days present, the fighters for gay rights on the literary frontier. Get ready to take a walk through history in the making – the top ten (objectively!) most famous LGBTQ authors!

Voices of Pride: The 10 Most Famous LGBTQ Authors You Need to Read!

In this article we will cover...

#1) Michael Dillon (1915 – 1962)

#2) becky albertalli (1982 – ), #3) d. h. lawrence (1885 – 1930), #4) kate bornstein (1948 – ), #5) e. m. forster (1879 – 1970), #6) sappho (630 bc – 570 bc), #7) james baldwin (1924 – 1987), #8) oscar wilde (1854 – 1900), #9) virginia woolf (1882 – 1941), #10) christopher isherwood (1904 – 1986).

For the first entry on this list, it is fitting to start with a first of another kind. Laurence Michael Dillon’s life story and wide-spanning history of deeds is worthy of a book itself, with an autobiographical account available in his final and until recently unpublished work ‘Out of the Ordinary – A Life of Gender and Spiritual Transitions’.

Born female as the heir to the baronetcy of Lismullen, Dillon grew up in Kent, England, and eventually attended St Anne’s women’s college. It was during this time and soon after, as he began working at a Bristol research laboratory, that Dillon, one of the most famous LGBTQ authors, began to fully experience discomfort with the gender assigned to him at birth. Dillon always felt more comfortable living life as a male, and before long, he secretly began testosterone hormone treatment, a journey intricately explored in some of the best books about gender .

After receiving treatment under the guise of healing wounds sustained during WWII, Dillon became the first person in history to undergo gender affirmation surgery, changed his birth certificate, and lived out the rest of his days comfortably as a male.

Fleeing Bristol after unwanted attention due to his becoming the heir apparent to baronetcy caused him to flee, Dillon traveled to India , where he spent his last days writing, embracing Buddhism, and eventually becoming a novice monk under the name Lobzang Jivaka.

Notable works

  • Self: A Study in Endocrinology and Ethics (1946
  • Poems of truth (1957)
  • The Life of Milarepa (1962)
  • Imji Getsul (1962)
  • Out of the Ordinary (1962, published 2017)

#1) Michael Dillon (1915 - 1962)

Now to add a little touch of modern talent to this list. Becky is one of today’s most known writers of LGBT fiction – both directly and indirectly through the fame of her works – and her notoriety seems to be steadily growing every year.

Most famous for her 2015 novel ‘Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda’, since adapted into film with ‘Love, Simon’ and series format with ‘Love, Victor’, Albertalli is a master of both narrative and expressive writing, weaving her books with a level emotional exploration that rivals the works of even the most regaled classical authors.

While the majority of Albertalli’s works are in the genre of young adult fiction or focus around young adult characters, this in itself is an important factor of LGBT representation and very much worthy of being talked about. Many of the societal challenges that today’s queer people must face manifest during adolescence and their time spent at high school. This means that allowing young adults to feel less alone and isolated is more important than ever, which is what Albertalli achieves with her writing to a tee.

Something that perhaps contributes to this idea of nurturing highschoolers is Albertalli’s one-time status as a high school psychologist. This certainly shows that she has a genuine interest in positively contributing through what she does.

  • Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015)
  • What If It’s Us (2018)
  • Yes No Maybe So (2020)
  • Love, Creekwood (2020)
  • Imogen, Obviously (2023)

Becky Albertalli (1982 - ) - Famous LGBTQ Authors

This might be somewhat of a surprising entry, but one can be sure that Lawrence’s inclusion here is not without reason. Although many of Lawrence’s most famous books have strong focusses on heterosexual relationships, and though the nature of the author’s own attractions is clouded with rumors and assumption, his status as an author of great note means that he is still a worthy addition to this list.

Lawrence’s fiction brims with themes of male bonding and sensuality, along with a sprinkling of explicit references to queer relationships and romance. Even when not directly broached, his works create space for discussions of LGBT-related topics, shedding light on the experiences of gay men and lifting writing about them somewhat out of the darkness of persecution. This exploration of queer themes in literature stands as a testament to the enduring impact of some of the most famous LGBTQ authors and their contributions to the best books for gay men .

That is not to say that his books were published without controversy. Lawrence’s works saw extensive censorship as a whole due to his coverage of explicit scenes and taboo topics. This included several chapters directly making references to homosexuality and queer romance.

As mentioned above, Lawrence’s own sexuality is somewhat of a matter of conjecture, even despite the presence of some historical evidence. Lawrence’s own wife stated that she believes he maintained a relationship with a Cornish farmer named William Henry Hocking. He is also known to have said, “I believe the nearest I’ve come to perfect love was with a young coal-miner when I was about 16”.

  • Sons and Lovers (1913)
  • The Rainbow (1915)
  • Women in Love (1920)
  • Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928)

D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930) - Famous LGBTQ Authors

Performance artist, actor, and author Kate Bornstein is one of the most important, progressive gender theorists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Identifying as non-binary and stating that “I don’t call myself a woman, and I know I’m not a man”, Kate is a frontier fighter for discussion about what it means to be male, female, or anywhere in between, as well as having written extensively about anorexia, BPD, and PTSD.

Her presence in theatre – performing in and writing works on the subject of gender debate and LGBTQ inclusion – marks her as a important figure of philosophy and inclusion, and her written books have provided inspiration to much further discussion and other published works.

Her most famous work, ‘Gender Outlaw’, underwent a revision in 2016 and emerged with a new title, ‘Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us’, reflecting a more contemporary perspective on transgender and non-binary gender issues. Reviews of the book applaud it as a definitive resource for challenging stereotypes within the gender spectrum and as a source of great empowerment for those grappling with their roles within it. This seminal text by one of the most famous LGBTQ authors stands as a cornerstone in the realm of the best lesbian books , offering profound insights into gender identity and expression.

Both the revised edition and the original are celebrations of individuality – of claiming something and not allowing your feeling of ‘self’ to slip away, regardless what opposition it comes up against and however many people attempt to convince you that it is invalid.

  • Gender Outlaw (1994)
  • A Queer and Pleasant Danger (2012)
  • My Gender Workbook (1997)
  • Hello, Cruel World (2006)
  • Nearly Roadkill (1996)

Kate Bornstein (1948 - )- Famous LGBTQ Authors

Critics and readers alike hold Edward Morgan Forster in high regard for his more mainstream works, but the main object of focus upon him in modern times as well as the source of his attention from the LBGTQ community is his posthumously published gay romance novel, ‘Maurice’.

Exploring the limitations that class gaps provide as well as the societal attitude towards queer relationships at the time, much of what Forster went on to explore in his other novels is perfectly exemplified in ‘Maurice’. Autobiographical in some senses – such as the experience of living and growing up in London and nearby British suburbs and attending Cambridge – the book details the romance between a young man named Maurice Hall and two other men named Clive Durham and Alec Scudder.

Forster was a well-versed and symbolic writer as a whole, possessing a well-padded and extensive literary catalogue. As mentioned above, however, this particular work was published only posthumously, and before then had only been read by several of Forster’s close friends and acquaintances.

Forster was determined to have the story be a regular romance novel with a happy ending, but this left him with the fear that it would see the book banned and himself prosecuted for spreading taboo content. To quote the note found upon the manuscript: “Publishable, but worth it?”

  • The Longest Journey (1907)
  • Maurice (1913–14, posthumously published in 1971)
  • A Room with a View (1908)
  • Howards End (1910)
  • Passage to India (1924)

E. M. Forster - Famous LGBTQ Authors

Though she was more of a prolific poet than an author of books as we know them today, Sappho’s name is so ingrained with LGBTQ culture that it is used as an adjective to describe love shared between two women, for example ‘sapphism’ or ‘sapphic’. If that isn’t a statement of importance, then what is?

Regaled as one of the greatest poets of all time and ‘the female Homer’, Sappho of Lesbos was born somewhere around 620 BC in ancient Greece, and is said to spent most of her life upon the island of Lesbos. This is where the word ‘lesbian’ also sees its origins, given the association between Sappho’s work and the island upon which she lived.

Although little of her works survived the test of time and the wide range of destructive historical events between the modern day and her time of birth, we still possess a large number of Sappho’s poems – many of which are confessions of love, treatise over love and expressions of her romance, or simply focus on describing the beauty of the female body.

Another significant factor contributing to the obscurity of her works is the disdain and reluctance of literature experts and fellow poets from more modern times. Additionally, a considerable portion of her writings was destroyed by the church in the 4th century due to their depictions of same-sex romance and occasionally explicit nature. These challenges have hindered the recognition of her contributions to literature. Nonetheless, the resurgence of interest in her works, fueled by contemporary readers seeking diverse voices, has begun to shed light on her legacy.

As one of the most famous LGBTQ authors, her writings, though obscured for centuries, now find a place among the best sapphic fantasy books , captivating readers with their imaginative worlds and richly drawn characters.

  • Ode to Aphrodite
  • Brothers Poem
  • The Poetess

Sappho - Famous LGBTQ Authors

An African-American writer of great regard, Baldwin is famous for many different forms of literature, ranging all the way from essays and plays to poems and fictional novels. His first novel ‘Go Tell It on the Mountain’ was recognized by Time magazine as one of the top 100 books released from 1923 to 2005, and the amount of other awards given to his work is beyond count.

Most famous of his written pieces, however, is without a doubt the romance novel ‘Giovanni’s Room’, which is single-handedly responsible for beginning a new era of queer representation in literature, and is attributed as the main inspiration for several other novels in the genre. Some such works include Maurice by E.M. Forster, A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, and Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. The book is even mentioned as the main cause for the two main characters of Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski to bond and spend time with one another.

To quote the author in ‘Life Magazine’ May 24, 1963, “You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”

  • Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953)
  • Giovanni’s Room (1956)
  • Another Country (1962)
  • If Beale Street Could Talk (1974)

James Baldwin - Famous LGBTQ Authors

The famed creator of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde is more than just an author. A well-rounded master of many forms, while Wilde only published one novel – The Picture of Dorian Gray –  his other contributions to the literary world in the shape of plays and works of comic make his mark in history a deep one.

Although Wilde was married and had two children by the time that he was middle aged – something almost demanded of both men and women at the time – he was openly gay, despite the fact that homosexuality was illegal in England at the time and that very little people in his life were likely to support him or protect him from prosecution.

Eventually, the worst came to pass. Wilde was sent to London’s Newgate Prison for two years from 1895 to 1897 on account of being accused of sodomy and indecency. Wilde’s attempt to sue Sir John Sholto Douglas on account of slander backfired with an order for his arrest being issued, which eventually resulted in the author being tried and sentenced to incarceration.  After his release, Wilde spent the last three years of his life in isolation, separated from much of what he had had before his imprisonment.

  • The Happy Prince and Other Stories (1888)
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891)
  • Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories (1891)
  • A House of Pomegranates (1891)
  • A Woman of No Importance (1893)

#8) Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)

Virginia Woolf – born Adeline Virginia Stephen – is seen as one of the most important writers of the 20 th century by both those within the LGBTQ community and without. Her name is a staple in literature, and she is considered the modernizer of ‘stream of consciousness’ in writing – a method which is used to capture the thoughts and emotions of the narrator.

Though she had filled the duty of marrying a man while young, like Oscar Wilde earlier on this list she did not allow that to stop her from seeing women and sharing romantic connections with them, to such a degree that her relationships were not so much secrets as obvious things that many chose to ignore, and continue to ignore to this day when discussing Woolf’s importance in literature.

Entire compilations of her love letters to and from other women have been released (such as Love Letters: Vita and Virginia), and one such note to her husband Leonard states ‘I sometimes think that if I married you, I could have everything—and then—is it the sexual side of it that comes between us? As I told you brutally the other day, I feel no physical attraction in you.’

To this day Woolf remains a literary, queer, and feminist icon, and her image is a source of infinite inspiration and indominable courage for countless generations.

  • To the Lighthouse (1927)
  • The Voyage Out (1915)
  • Orlando (1928)
  • The Waves (1931)
  • Mrs. Dalloway (1925)

Virginia Woolf - Famous LGBTQ Authors

Considered to be a strong portion of the Gay Liberation movement’s heart, Christopher Isherwood’s works and life as a gay man have proved to be crucial inspiration for many, with several of his books setting off a domino-effect of similar debates and publications ranging in span all the way to the present day of queer literature.

Isherwood’s greatest work is said by many to be ‘A Single Man’, which tells the tale and the surrounding history of one day in the life of a gay British professor teaching in the US. The book was made into a film in 2009, and is said to be a reflection of Isherwood’s own time time spent teaching at CSULA in Los Angeles, perhaps holding even more autobiographical significance to the author’s own life.

That is not to say that his repertoire is devoid of a true memoir, however. Another of Isherwood’s works, ‘Christopher and His Kind’, details the author’s life-changing arrival and Berlin, and the series of events – both developmental and romantic – that drove him to stay in Germany until he fled the country along with the rise of the Nazi party. Accompanying him was his romantic partner Heinz Neddermeyer, who later separated from Isherwood upon learning the level of detail with which Christopher and His Kind explored their relationship and Isherwood’s life.

  • Goodbye to Berlin (1939)
  • Christopher and His Kind (1976)
  • Mr Norris Changes Trains (1935)
  • Journey to a War (1939)
  • A Single Man (1964)

My Autobiography of Carson McCullers: A Memoir

This poignant nonfiction/memoir tapestry was shortlisted for the National Book Award, and with good reason. Jenn Shapland probes the archives — broadly defined — of midcentury American novelist Carson McCullers. What she finds in letters, therapy transcripts (!), and the bathtub of Carson’s childhood home drives a beautiful narrative about obsessiveness, queer longing, art, and self-examination. Plus, it’s also really funny.

Real Life by Brandon Taylor

Real Life

You know who Brandon Taylor is. He’s the coolest nerd on Twitter , and he also wrote one of the best debut novels in recent memory. Real Life follows Wallace, a Black queer PhD student in a midwestern college town where all of his friends and most of his colleagues are white. The book takes place over the course of a single weekend, during which an intimate encounter with one of his friends stirs up a lot of internal and external drama and reckoning for Wallace — and leaves the reader spinning. In a good way.

Fiebre Tropical by Juliana Delgado Lopera

Fiebre tropical.

Fiebre Tropical

In this total whirlwind of a novel that echoes in form the chaotic energy of adolescence, Colombian teenager Francisca moves with her mother to an ant-infested house in Miami, where when she’s not clashing with her newly evangelized mom, she’s falling in love with the pastor’s daughter Carmen. This bilingual, fast-paced story will have you laughing, crying and gaining a new favorite fictional character.

Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz

Postcolonial love poem.

Postcolonial Love Poem

Natalie Diaz used to be a professional basketball player, and she also edited an anthology of sports writing last year called Bodies Built for Game . In her sophomore poetry collection (after 2012’s When My Brother Was an Aztec ), Diaz writes about the politics, desire, ecstasy, and landscape of bodies literal and metaphorical. This one was also shortlisted for the National Book Award this year, and its stunning, life-giving poems make it obvious why.

dayliGht by Roya Marsh

Daylight: poems.

DayliGht: Poems

Speaking of gorgeous, life-giving poems, Roya Marsh’s debut collection flew a little under the radar this year but deserves to be picked up. The introduction establishes Marsh’s framework of love and connection in the importance of representation of Black queer butch women. She goes on to deliver one stunner after another, full of reverence and grief for her community. This one is not to be missed.

Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby

Wow, no thank you..

Wow, No Thank You.

If you’re looking to pee yourself laughing, Samantha Irby has always been a good bet. This latest essay collection, her third after Meaty and We Are Never Meeting in Real Life , might be her funniest yet. Writing about Instagram wellness gurus, eating out (remember that?) with Crohn’s disease, awkward social situations (remember social situations?), and living in the rural midwest as a Black queer femme with her partner and partner’s kids. Irby’s writing is hilarious, to be sure, but it’s also incisive and smart.

All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson

All boys aren't blue: a memoir-manifesto.

All Boys Aren't Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto

George M. Johnson is an icon, largely because of this intensely beautiful book. It’s classified as a YA memoir, and it is mostly about Johnson’s youth coming of age as a Black queer nonbinary person in New Jersey and Virginia. They write so clearly and affectingly about masculinity, toxic and otherwise, family, gender, and Black joy. This is a perfect read for someone of any age, gender identity, sexuality, or other identity markers who is interested in complex stories of love and resilience.

Vanishing Monuments by John Elizabeth Stintzi

Vanishing monuments.

Vanishing Monuments

John Elizabeth Stintzi released two books this year within a month of each other (their poetry collection, Junebat , is also well worth picking up). Both were debuts, which is even more impressive. In this novel, middle-aged nonbinary photographer Alani returns to their childhood home in rural Winnipeg for the first time since leaving with their girlfriend at age 17. Their mother’s dementia is worsening, to the point where she doesn’t speak. This is a powerful story about grief, reckoning, relationships, and what makes us human.

Boys of Alabama by Genevieve Hudson

Boys of alabama.

Boys of Alabama

This is Genevieve Hudson’s debut novel, but their writing is all over the place, including in their 2018 short story collection Pretend We Live Here and lit mags from McSweeney’s to Tin House (RIP). Their fiction has a lush, celestial quality that feels like magic, and Boys of Alabama does in fact contain some magic. Following queer German teen Max after he moves to Alabama for his father’s car manufacturing job, the story unfolds around religion (the Christian kind and the football kind), death, heat, poison, cornfields, sex, and blood. If it sounds like a spell, it kind of is.

The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio

The undocumented americans.

The Undocumented Americans

Another shortlister for the National Book Award, this explosion of a masterpiece is required reading for every person, especially every American. Villavicencio pulls no punches with this brilliant work of nonfiction, in which she tells the most human of stories – that is, the messy one. In too many narratives around immigration, the people lumped into labels of “immigrant” or “undocumented” are flattened to the point of erasure. Through interviews and personal story, Villavicencio not only crafts a narrative in opposition to this flattening, but in the process deftly illustrates the lack of humanity in the American empire. There’s also humor here, and her reading of the audiobook is one of the best listening experiences you’ll find.

Fairest by Meredith Talusan

Fairest: a memoir.

Fairest: A Memoir

Meredith Talusan grew up in the Philippines, where she lived with her grandmother, to whom she was very close. She was also a child star on television. An academic scholarship to Harvard and her albinism facilitated a proximity to whiteness that spurred a reckoning with race, class, gender and sexual identity, and privilege that she explores deeply in this memoir. The book also explores her gender transition and relationships with people and with ideas, including the idea of desirability.

Pizza Girl by Jean Kyoung Frazier

Pizza Girl

In Kyoung Frazier's short, punchy, atmospheric novel, the unnamed narrator is an 18-year-old young woman who is pregnant, living with her boyfriend in her mother’s house, grieving her recently deceased father, and yes, working as a pizza delivery girl in LA. When a woman calls one night desperate for pickle pizza to feed her young son, the narrator soon becomes obsessed with her, a fixation that crests in a dramatic, strange, totally engrossing way. This book is in a league of its own, funny and deeply moving, and it has one of the coolest covers of any book in recent memory.

A History of My Brief Body by Billy-Ray Belcourt

A history of my brief body.

A History of My Brief Body

Billy-Ray Belcourt is a poet and one of the world’s greatest minds, and his first collection of essays is only further proof of this. This book is short but dense; every sentence is so powerful it will stop you in your tracks. Tackling queerness and decolonial imagination, Belcourt brings his unique poetic style to prose here, but these genre labels are pretty useless to describe his writing. Just read it, you’ll see.

The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi

The death of vivek oji.

The Death of Vivek Oji

Another of our greatest living writers, Akwaeke Emezi is back with another adult novel to follow up 2018’s Freshwater and 2019’s YA novel Pet . This one opens with the body of gender-nonconforming teen Vivek Oji lying outside his parents’ home in Nigeria, and proceeds to unfold the story of his, his family’s, and his community’s life that led to this devastating death. This is a story of chosen family, discovery, love, pain, grief, and how colonialism infects individuals and nations.

The Selected Work of Audre Lorde edited by Roxanne Gay

The selected works of audre lorde.

The Selected Works of Audre Lorde

Audre Lorde remains a critical writer, thinker, and activist whose words and ethos continue to influence the writers and activists of today. Here, another crucial figure in literary and social justice spaces, Roxane Gay, collects some of Lorde’s many essays and poems into a new anthology and introduces them as only she can: with reverence, incisiveness, and luminous prose.

Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex by Angela Chen

Ace: what asexuality reveals about desire, society, and the meaning of sex.

Ace: What Asexuality Reveals about Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex

Finally, a book about asexuality that’s not clinical or purely academic! In this extremely welcome nonfiction/memoir hybrid, Angela Chen brings together her personal experience, extensive interviews, and deep research into the asexual experience to a book that should be read by everyone, no matter their sexuality. She introduces concepts like western society’s compulsory masculinity, the idea of queer platonic relationships, and a primer on the vast possibility of asexuality, which is too often framed as a lack or disorder.

Love After the End edited by Joshua Whitehead

Love after the end: an anthology of two-spirit and indigiqueer speculative fiction.

Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction

Joshua Whitehead’s 2018 novel Jonny Appleseed , about a young Two-Spirit Indigiqueer protagonist who navigates family, sex work, and love was one of the best books to come out that year. Whitehead has now edited an anthology of queer, trans, and Two-Spirit Indigenous speculative fiction both utopian and dystopian. It brings together so many fantastic authors and gorgeous pieces of writing.

Bestiary by K-Ming Chang

Bestiary

This debut novel about a young Taiwanese American girl and the inherited violence and resilience of the three generations of women in her family, and also about queer love, is perhaps best describes as “visceral.” Chang is not afraid to go there when it comes to all the beautiful, animalistic, and very gross aspects of the human body, so maybe don’t eat while you’re reading this, but the story will stay in your bones forever.

Plain Bad Heroines by emily m. danforth

Plain bad heroines: a novel.

Plain Bad Heroines: A Novel

Almost a decade after her modern queer YA classic novel, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, was published, emily m. danforth is back with a novel for adults (but will also appeal to teens). This is a gothic romp of a gay book. There are multiple parallel storylines in different time periods, a haunted abandoned girls school, a mysterious lesbian book, Hollywood, lots of bees, and secrets abound. Also, almost every character is queer. This is a long one but it moves quickly and is a lot of fun.

Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi

Butter honey pig bread.

Butter Honey Pig Bread

This radiant debut novel from multidisciplinary artist Francesca Ekwuyasi follows a mother and her twin daughters from Lagos, Nigeria, to Europe, Canada, and back again, as their stories diverge and converge across time. This book is filled with art, food, hunger and longing, love and resentment, and some of the most compelling characters this reviewer has come across in a long time.

The Thirty Names of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar

The thirty names of night.

The Thirty Names of Night

Zeyn Joukhadar’s 2018 debut novel, A Map of Salt and Stars , was an epic journey across time and geography. In his sophomore novel, a young unnamed (until the end) narrator, a closeted trans boy, is grieving his mother, who died in a mysterious fire. Living in New York City with his grandmother, he paints murals on condemned buildings at night, and becomes fixated on finding the mysterious (perhaps fictional) species of bird his mother was looking for before she died. Joukhadar’s skill with rendering imagery and atmosphere is unrivaled, and this moving story about family, self-determination, community, art, and love is well worth the read.

The Freezer Door by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore

The freezer door.

The Freezer Door

Mattlida Bernstein Sycamore is a prolific master of defying category and genre; in other words, she queers the heck out of everything she does. In this memoir-of-sorts, her first since her 2018 novel Sketchstasy , Sycamore navigates gentrifying cities (in this case mainly Seattle), exploring the ideas of connection, longing, queer dreams, and capitalism. No one writes quite like Sycamore, and this one is not to be missed.

We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics edited by Andrea Abi-Karam and Kay Gabriel

We want it all: an anthology of radical trans poetics.

We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics

Lastly, we have a tome of an anthology of trans poetry. This collection is impressive in scope, style, and time, including intergenerational poets on everything from work to sex to pop culture. This is the kind of book you can pick up and read a few selections from, and be reminded that trans identity, like all identity, is vast and beautiful.

Honestly, if it were up to me, I’d make this list 100 books long. There are so many incredible queer books coming out in 2024 that it’s impossible to narrow it down to a dozen! And even more queer books are being announced every day. Keep your eyes peeled for more queer book lists on Book Riot throughout the year, and sign up for Our Queerest Shelves to get new queer book releases in your inbox every week.

It seems like just yesterday that traditional publishing finally came around to sharing queer stories. Can you believe the beautiful array of identities and stories now hitting shelves? While there’s still lots of room to grow, particularly when it comes to representing BIPOC and trans identities across genres, it’s encouraging to see how many queer stories are coming to readers this year. I hope this list of the best new queer books helps you find something new to look forward to in 2024. And consider pre-ordering a few (or all of them!) to support your friendly neighborhood queer writers.

book cover of how to live free in a dangerous world

How to Live Free in a Dangerous World by Shayla Lawson (Feb. 6, Tiny Reparations Books)

In these essays, poet and journalist Shayla Lawson shares learnings and surprising encounters from their travels around the globe, from Mexico to Egypt to Japan and beyond. With each new locale, they share introspections on how their journeys have shaped them and represent different aspects of their life. infinity alchemist book cover

Infinity Alchemist by Kacen Callender (Feb. 6, Tor Teen)

It’s a thrilling adventure full of magic, dark mysteries, and adventure.

cover of Thunder Song

Thunder Song: Essays by Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe (March 5, Counterpoint LLC)

Traditionally published Indigenous stories are often focused on the past, ignoring the very real experiences of contemporary Indigenous peoples. In this memoir-in-essays, Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe beautifully ties her own family’s past with her lived experience as a queer woman from the Upper Skagit and Nooksack Indian Tribes in today’s world. It’s a provocative and wonderfully crafted collection exploring cultural legacies, colonialism, and finding your own path forward.

cover of Who's Afraid of Gender

Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler (March 19, Farrar, Straus & Giroux)

Recent years have ushered in a “gender panic” of the political right, attacking the freedom and safety of trans and gender non-conforming people from schools to public bathrooms to every corner of public life. In these dangerous times, post-structuralist gender theorist Judith Butler has returned with the fiery takedown of anti-gender politics. Butler, author of the landmark work Gender Trouble , traces the ways gender anxieties have been weaponized by authoritarian and fascist leaders and makes a bold argument for fighting for equality for all genders.

The Emperor and the Endless Palace book cover

The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang (March 26, MIRA)

Romantasy (romance + fantasy) was the fastest-rising book genre in 2023, and as we’re soon to see in 2024, it’s just getting started. This queer, sexy, adventure-filled romantasy by debut author Justinian Huang is sure to make waves. Two men destined to find each other across lifetimes are reincarnated again and again, from a young emperor and courtier in ancient China to a college student and handsome stranger in modern-day Los Angeles. As their love story is reenacted through the centuries, they’re tested by the strange and dangerous world around them. How long can their love survive?

cover of The Prospects

The Prospects by KT Hoffman (April 9, Dial Press)

Queer romance has been slowly carving out a space in the world of traditional publishing, and in 2024, we’re finally starting to see a wider array of queer characters finding their own happy endings. In KT Hoffman’s The Prospects , readers meet Gene Ionescu, the first openly trans professional baseball player. Gene is finally hitting his stride on his minor league team, the Beaverton Beavers, when his biggest rival is traded to his team. But the electric tension between Gene and Luis slowly turns into the kind of chemistry that can help them win big time — on the field and off. It’s a joy-filled romance sure to have baseball fans and sport-hating readers cheering wholeheartedly for the Beavers.

cover of Escape Velocity

Escape Velocity by Victor Manibo (May 11, Erewhon Books)

A queer murder mystery set in space? Say no more, I’m in! Only the wealthy elite can snag a spot aboard the Altaire, a luxury spaceship orbiting Earth where guests have a chance to fight for a spot on a new Mars settlement, avoiding certain death on crumbling planet Earth. During a school reunion on the Altaire, a group of past classmates becomes determined to find the truth of an unsolved murder during their school days. But their investigation distracts them from the many ulterior motives of their fellow space travelers. It’s a layered, imaginative tale with a dynamic ensemble cast of characters.

cover of Triple Sec

Triple Sec by TJ Alexander (June 4, Atria/Emily Bestler Books)

When it comes to queer romance, TJ Alexander is writing some of today’s funniest, most endearing, and steamiest love stories around. Their foodie romances Chef’s Kiss and Chef’s Choice made me laugh so hard I cried. Now they’re back with something new (and quite different when it comes to traditionally published romances): Triple Sec , a polyamorous rom-com set around a swanky Manhattan cocktail lounge. When a disillusioned bartender is propositioned by a hot queer couple, she gains the confidence to try new things in relationships and in other aspects of her life.

little rot book cover

Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi (June 18, Riverhead Books)

Akwaeke Emezi is a phenomenal queer author whose work tells powerful, unexpected stories across genres, including literary fiction ( The Death of Vivek Oji ), romance ( You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty ), YA fantasy ( Pet ), and more. They’ve been on my must-read list since their 2018 debut, Freshwater , and every time a new Emezi title is announced, I know it’s going to blow me away even more than their last. Emezi’s upcoming literary fiction novel Little Rot is perhaps their darkest and messiest tale yet. When longtime couple Aima and Kalu split, five friends are thrown into chaos in Nigeria’s wealthy, exclusive underground. They’re each pushed to the edge to protect themselves from great evil.

the cover of The Pairing

The Pairing by Casey McQuiston (August 6, St. Martin’s Griffin)

Casey McQuiston, author of Red, White & Royal Blue , can certainly be given at least partial credit for the massive rise in popularity of queer romance. Their debut novel cracked the publishing world wide open for queer stories, showing that readers of all stripes could find joy in celebrating LGBTQ+ love. McQuiston has described their upcoming novel as “sluts in Europe,” which, honestly, say no more. But if you must know more, it follows two bisexual exes who accidentally book the same food and wine tour through France, Spain, and Italy and end up challenging each other to an international hookup competition. If a book description has ever sparked my interest more than this one, I certainly can’t name it.

cover of Bluff by Danez Smith

Bluff: Poems by Danez Smith (Aug. 20, Graywolf Press)

Award-winning poet Danez Smith has written brilliantly crafted collections like Homie and Don’t Call Us Dead . If you’re looking for queer poetry to watch in 2024, Bluff should absolutely be on your list. Their newest collection is an exploration of racial justice, violence, and healing in Smith’s hometown, the Twin Cities, as well as a call for poetry and the arts to help build a path toward a collective future. From rage and grief to inspiration and hope, these poems are an emotionally powerful call to action.

The Games: A Global History of the Olympics by David Goldblatt

The Games: A Global History of the Olympics by David Goldblatt

Seasoned sportswriter David Goldblatt takes on nothing smaller than the entire history of the modern Olympics in this comprehensive book. With his dry British wit, he wryly observes the political, historical and international forces that surround and intersect the actual sports of the Olympics.

This book focuses less on athletic achievements and more on the behind the scenes, including the shortcomings of the International Olympic Committee, the effect of WWII and the Cold War on the games, the birth of the Paralympics and the fight for recognition for postcolonial nations.

For the Glory by Duncan Hamilton

For the Glory by Duncan Hamilton

Eric Liddell is the famous Olympian in Chariots of Fire . At the 1924 Olympics, he refused to run his 100-meter race because his Christian faith prevented him from running on a Sunday. Instead, he ran the 400-meter race and won the gold medal.

For the Glory continues Liddell's story after the Olympics, when he became a missionary in China. As WWII descended, he was imprisoned in a Japanese labor camp for 18 months. Even under extreme hardship, he ministered to fellow prisoners, running one last race within the walls of the camp before he died. Both tragic and inspiring, For the Glory is a deeper look at a famous Olympic story.

The Naked Olympics by Tony Perrottet

The Naked Olympics by Tony Perrottet

What was it like to attend the ancient Olympics? Well, for starters, the athletes competed naked. Viscerally evocative of the sights (and smells!) of the ancient games, this book reconstructs the wild bacchanals, deadly chariot racing and sex and corruption that marked the games. Keep an eye out for cameos from Socrates, Plato and Herodotus! Humorous and gross in turns, this quick read will give you a very different perspective on the modern games.

Swimming Pretty by Vicki Valosik

Swimming Pretty by Vicki Valosik

This history explores one of the most interesting Olympic events: Synchronized swimming. On the 40th anniversary of it becoming an Olympic sport, this book follows the sport's development from "scientific swimming" done by Ben Franklin to Victorian vaudevillian "water queens" who swam in tanks on stage.

Along the way, Swimming Pretty covers the struggle of women athletes to be allowed to compete and the early social tensions between beauty and athleticism . A feminist look at a sexist history, this book celebrates pioneers and women's aquatic accomplishments.

Olympic Pride, American Prejudice by Deborah Riley Draper and Travis Thrasher

Olympic Pride, American Prejudice by Deborah Riley Draper and Travis Thrasher

This nonfiction book follows the stories of 18 Black athletes who competed in the 1936 Nazi Olympics, including famous runner Jesse Owens. To show the world what they're capable of, they had to fight against discrimination both in Jim Crow-era America and in Hitler's Germany. This powerful book shines light on some of the untold stories of these incredible athletes and the barriers they broke on the world stage.

Sarah Vincent (she/her) covers the latest and greatest in books and all things pets for Good Housekeeping . How JD Vance went from thinking he was gay and changing his name twice to being an anti-LGBTQ+ extremist

JD Vance RNC 2024 speech

Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick has reinvented himself repeatedly.

Ohio Republican U.S. Sen. JD Vance’s journey from a troubled childhood in Appalachia to the halls of the U.S. Senate to being former President Donald Trump’s running mate has been the subject of much ink, yet his contradictory stance on LGBTQ + rights is coming under scrutiny. Vance’s memoir , Hillbilly Elegy , contains a revealing anecdote about his childhood belief that he was gay. Influenced by a preacher’s condemnation of homosexuality, young Vance feared he was destined for hell simply because he disliked girls and cherished his friendship with another boy.

Vance’s grandmother, whom he referred lovingly to as “mamaw” during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last Wednesday, was a central figure in his upbringing. She swiftly dispelled his fears with a blunt question and an assurance of divine love, regardless of his sexual orientation. This experience, which might have instilled a sense of empathy and understanding, starkly contrasts with Vance’s political actions. As a senator, Vance has positioned himself as a staunch opponent of LGBTQ + rights, focusing particularly on restricting transgender rights.

Vance’s opposition to affirming one’s identity is complicated by his decision to change his name, not once, but twice. He was born James Donald Bowman and took the surname Hamel from his stepfather before finally choosing the name Vance to honor his grandmother, The New York Times reports . Critics argue that Vance’s childhood experience should have fostered empathy and understanding toward the LGBTQ + community. Instead, he has used his platform to undermine their rights, leading to accusations of hypocrisy.

Vance’s legislative actions have also drawn significant criticism. He introduced a bill to criminalize gender-affirming care for minors, arguing that such medical interventions are harmful and should be banned. He has also decried the inclusion of a third gender option on passports, branding it as a waste of taxpayer money. “There are only two genders — passports issued by the United States government should recognize that simple fact,” Vance wrote on his congressional website while pushing his bill, the Passport Sanity Act.

Vance has made other significant changes to his identity throughout his life, including his religious beliefs. Raised by blue-dog Democrats, he embraced conservative values, though he was a never-Trump Republican until he joined the U.S. Senate in 2022. He recently became a vocal supporter of Trump. The Times notes that his journey from a skeptical observer to a key player in Trump’s political circle highlights his adaptability and willingness to shift his identity for political gain.

Vance’s narrative, as detailed in Hillbilly Elegy , is one of struggle and transformation. He has spoken openly about his troubled childhood, experiences with various father figures, and his journey through the military and Yale Law School. These experiences have shaped his political views, revealing a man who has constantly reinvented himself. This makes his rigid stance on transgender rights all the more perplexing.

The beachworthy books lovers of queer lit are devouring this summer

book beach reads

With temperatures reaching record highs, there’s never been a better time to head to the beach, park or pool to escape the heat with a transporting book in hand. And this summer, lovers of queer books have a plethora of titles to choose from — from page-turning romances to provocative anthologies and steamy thrillers.

“A beach read is a mindset,” Nina Haines, the founder of the Sapph-Lit book club, told NBC News on a call from her parents’ beach house, where she was escaping one of New York’s recent heat waves. “Beach reads are books that make you giddy and excited — and a little horny.”

Ashley Herring Blake's "Delilah Green Doesn’t Care.”

When the heat index goes up, Haines said, she tends to reach for her favorite authors, including “Red, White & Royal Blue” and “One Last Stop” scribe Casey McQuiston , and “steamroll” through series with interconnected characters and immersive worlds. On her list of go-to sapphic series writers are Ashley Herring Blake and Alexandria Bellefleur , whose books come in paperbacks bearing wholesome covers, exactly what the book club founder wants while lying in the sand.

“These are paperbacks that you can chuck in your beach bag. You can get them wet, you can dog-ear the pages, and then you can pass them off to your friend as soon as you’re done,” she said of her favorite summer books, joking that they often have “cutesy illustrated covers” to hide “the dirtiest smut you’ve ever encountered.”

“They’re compulsive, easy-to-read romances you gobble up in one sitting. It’s a short relationship, but it’s still very meaningful,” she added, as if referring to a whirlwind fling.

But summer isn’t only about sapphic smut and blockbuster romances. For New York-based publishing veteran Jesse Aylen, a great warm-weather read could be an engaging memoir or short story collection, as long as it marries brevity with escapism — whether via a tantalizing relationship or, for fantasy lovers, a trip to another planet.

“People are hot and looking to put their brain somewhere else. Why not on Mars?” Aylen said with a laugh, adding that while some people may want to read Tolstoy in the summer, he prefers transportive, bite-size texts that he can eat right up.

“I love a long book, but if it’s 80, 90, 100 degrees outside, I want something that’s going to match the breezier mood for the season,” he said.

Armistead Maupin’s "Tales of the City."

Aylen, who belongs to a book club that focuses on topical nonfiction, also values summer reads that spark conversation and offer humor — from Armistead Maupin’s comedy-of-manners series “Tales of the City” to the wry “Fran Lebowitz Reader.”

“I love book clubs, and I love yammering on about books to friends — sharing the beauty and bounty of what’s out there,” Aylen said, adding that when it’s hot out he particularly likes to recommend books that “broaden people’s palates.” “The worst thing that a book can be is siloed.”

Whatever’s on the reading list, summer is a time to tear through books, thanks to slower work schedules and a greater emphasis on being outdoors and among friends. That makes it a prime season not just for sandy solo sessions with a romance and discovering new favorites at book club but also curated bookstore sections designed for perusing.

At Provincetown Bookshop , located in the storied gay beach destination on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod, the warm weather brings a surge of shoppers checking out the store’s seasonal beach reads section.

“It’s basically our whole year,” Provincetown Bookshop manager Derek McCormack told NBC News, explaining that the store, which also once employed filmmaker John Waters , makes half of its annual sales during July and August.

"Providence" by Craig Willse

To cater to the diverse tastes of the summer clientele — which McCormack said runs the gamut from idle vacationers looking for a less challenging book to professors who want something a bit more substantial — the store’s beach reads section includes a mix of romance and thrillers, some of which have a local flair. (This year’s lineup includes new releases like “Providence” by Craig Willse alongside the 2022 hit “Our Wives Under the Sea” by Julia Armfield.) But shoppers also have a tendency to anoint their own beachworthy favorites.

“A great beach read is propulsive, easy to get lost in, ideally very portable,” McCormack said, adding that the sleek reissue of Edmund White’s “Nocturnes for the King of Naples,” a novel told through love letters, has become one of this year’s unofficial picks. “A variety of things could be classified as a beach read, but they all do that, at the very least.”

Across the board, what seems to make a great summer read for most people — whether it’s classic literature or new adult romance, highbrow or lowbrow — is a captivating paperback that’s primed to be devoured, shared and eventually destroyed by sun, sand and boozy summer drinks. And if it happens to have a little (or a lot of) sex, well, that certainly doesn’t hurt.

“Like what you like and don’t be guilty about it,” Haines said, quipping she’d rather be friends with someone who reads smut exclusively than the person who has read all 100 best books of the 21st century . “Reading is supposed to be fun.”

In addition to the aforementioned recommendations from Haines, Aylen and McCormack, here are a few other queer beach recommendations from book connoisseurs and NBC News’ own bibliophiles:

‘A Good Happy Girl’

Iris Tobin, a bookseller at Madison, Wisconsin’s A Room of One’s Own — where it’s officially “brat summer” — recommended Marissa Higgins ’ “masochistically wonderful” novel about a self-destructive young lawyer who takes up with married lesbians.

‘Everyone I Kissed Since You Got Famous’

Leah Koch, co-owner of the bicoastal romance bookstore The Ripped Bodice, named Mae Marvel’s novel about high school best friends who reconnect after their lives take different paths as her current summer favorite.

‘Giovanni’s Room’

Trailblazing writer James Baldwin’s slim, captivating novel about a tragic love affair between an American expatriate and an Italian bartender in 1950s Paris is necessary reading this summer, which marks 100 years since Baldwin’s birth .

‘Hot Summer’

Elle Everhart’s addicting new release is about a woman who goes on a “Love Island”-like show to win a promotion and finds herself unexpectedly falling for a fiery-haired contestant.

‘In Tongues’

Thomas Grattan’s new novel about a gay 20-something’s quest for self-discovery, which upends the lives of a powerful New York art couple, is another of McCormack’s go-to recommendations this summer.

In K. Patrick’s enthralling and erotic debut novel about identity, seduction and obsession, a junior staff member at an English girls school becomes enthralled with the headmaster’s wife, leading to a taboo affair. “Mrs. S.” was on NBC News’ top LGBTQ books list last year and is NBC Out editorial director Brooke Sopelsa’s top beach read pick this summer.

Bookseller Raquel Espasande of New York’s Bluestockings Cooperative promised this anthology featuring works — from erotica to experimental — by “a slutty who’s who” and edited by Michelle Tea “does not disappoint.”

‘The Future Was Color’

In Patrick Nathan’s new slow burn of a novel , a mysterious narrator recounts a gay Hungarian screenwriter’s professional and sexual exploits in decadent postwar Los Angeles and New York.

‘What Belongs to You’

Ahead of the fall release of “ Small Rain ,” revisit Garth Greenwell’s debut novel , an exquisitely written meditation on desire that centers on an American professor who falls in love with a Bulgarian hustler.

‘Women’ by Chloé Caldwell

Haines described Chloé Caldwell’s recently reissued erotic sapphic novella , which features passionate romance and devastating heartbreak, as “the perfect beach read right now.” “Women” is also one of NBC News senior producer Jillian Eugenios’ favorite summer books.

Kamala Harris Book Sales Soaring in Wake of Democratic Presidential Nomination

  • By Tim Chan

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Kamala Harris appears to be gaining momentum after President Joe Biden’s news that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Harris as the Democratic Party nominee . In the days since Biden’s announcement, Democrats have seen both fundraising numbers and political allies lining up behind the Vice President, as she prepares to face off against Donald Trump in November.

The momentum is crossing over into the sales arena as well, with unofficial “Kamala 2024” merch dropping online, and renewed interest in the former California senator’s 2019 memoir . In fact, Amazon reports that orders of Harris’ memoir soared a whopping 60,378% at one point, since the weekend, with the book now topping Amazon’s women’s biographies chart , among others (it’s currently up 200% on Amazon’s “Movers & Shakers” chart ).

Harris has written two non-fiction books and one children’s book, though there are other books about the Vice President online. Here’s a look at some of the titles that have returned to the charts since Harris became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

The Truths We Hold: An American Journey

$9.78 $18.00 46% off

Originally released in 2019, Vice President Harris’ memoir has returned to Amazon’s bestselling biographies chart (ironically just behind J.D. Vance’s “ Hillbilly Elegy “). Harris’ book details her upbringing as the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, and the lessons she learned about social justice and compassion while growing up in Oakland, California. Amazon has Harris’ official memoir on sale for under $10 right now . You can also listen to the official audiobook — narrated by Harris herself — on Audible . The streaming service has a two-month free trial that you can use to listen to “The Truths We Hold” online for free.

The Truths We Hold: An American Journey (Young Readers Edition)

$9.39 $10.92 14% off

Harris also has a “young readers edition” of her book, designed for children ages 12-15. This version is currently topping Amazon’s teen biographies chart , with reviewers calling it an “easy-read version” of the original, that’s “heartwarming” and “inspiring.” As the publisher description states, “This book challenges us to become leaders in our own lives and shows us that with determination and perseverance, all dreams are possible.”

Superheroes Are Everywhere

Released in 2021, Harris’ kids book is currently back on Amazon’s bestselling children’s political biographies chart . Inspired by her own childhood — and her love for superheroes — the 40-page picture book inspires the next generation to find their voice, while showing them that “the power to make the world a better place is inside all of us” — no cape required.

Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer

Originally written in 2009 by the then-San Francisco District Attorney, “Smart on Crime” details the career prosecutor’s thoughts on how to improve law enforcement while ending the cycle of repeat offenders. As the publisher notes state, “‘Smart on Crime’ spells out the policy shifts required to increase public safety, reduce costs, and strengthen our communities.”

My Little Golden Book About Kamala Harris

$3.98 $5.99 34% off

The “Little Golden Book” series has featured everyone from Taylor Swift to Lady Gaga , and now, the presidential candidate gets the kid-friendly biography treatment in this 24-page picture book. Currently the number-one book on Amazon’s multicultural children’s biographies list , Harris’ “Little Golden Book” is an easy and inspiring read-aloud for young girls, boys and families alike.

Kamala Harris (Little People, BIG DREAMS, 68)

$9.79 $15.99 39% off

Part of the “ Little People, BIG DREAMS ” series, this children’s book tells the story of how Harris made it to the White House, through quirky, full-color illustrations and easy-to-read text. From her early life in California, to going to law school, to becoming a senator and now-Vice President, this book encourages kids to dream big to “achieve incredible things.” (This book is also available in a Spanish version for $7 at Target.com ).

Kamala’s Way: An American Life

$17.89 $28.00 36% off

While much has been written about Vice President Harris in the press, there aren’t many books out (yet) about the Democratic presidential nominee. “Kamala’s Way,” from former Los Angeles Times reporter Dan Morain, tries to fill in the blanks, offering a detailed take from someone who has been following Harris’ career from the very start. Per publisher Simon & Schuster, this book reveals the “values and priorities, the kind of people she brings into her orbit, the sorts of problems she’s good at solving, and the missteps, risks, and bold moves she’s made on her way to the top.”

The Irreconcilable Versions of J.D. Vance in ‘Hillbilly Elegy’

Even before the Republican vice-presidential nominee aligned himself with Donald Trump, contradiction was central to his rags-to-riches biography.

Much has been made of the political pirouette J.D. Vance executed to secure the embrace of Donald J. Trump, a man he once called “cultural heroin” before seeking his endorsement for the Senate and, Wednesday night, accepting the Republican nomination to be his vice president.

Old friends and former classmates have expressed bewilderment at the seemingly irreconcilable versions of Mr. Vance. But contradiction has been central to Mr. Vance’s biography, nowhere more so than in his popular 2016 book, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.”

The memoir, whose political dividends have far exceeded the millions of dollars it has paid in royalties and movie rights, emerged at a pivotal point in national politics, quickly becoming a go-to guide to the white underclass discontent that propelled Mr. Trump’s surprise presidential victory.

Mr. Vance used his personal account of overcoming dysfunctional Appalachian family values to tell a larger story about forgotten Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he leaned again into those themes, at one point drawing attention to his mother, “who struggled with money and addiction but never gave up.” She stood in the audience when he continued, “And I’m proud to say that tonight my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober.”

But during Mr. Trump’s presidency, reaction to the book, like so much else in culture and politics, became increasingly polarized. While he expected pushback, Mr. Vance was confused by the attacks from opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, he professed in an afterword appended to the book in 2018.

“I’ve heard, for instance, from someone on the Left that my book is a victim-blaming piece of anti-government libertarianism,” he wrote, adding that “someone on the Right” had complained that the book’s premise “would justify a massive expansion of government welfare programs.”
