Kiwi Spirit: A 63-foot Globe Girdler from Lyman-Morse

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 7, 2012

Kiwi Spirit

New Zealand sailor Stanley Paris is a rare character, equal parts doer and dreamer. By profession a highly successful educator and physical therapist, he has also completed the grueling Ironman Triathlon in Hawai’i and twice swum the English Channel. So it’s safe to say his record as a guy who gets things done is well established.

Like all sailors—and with a circumnavigation to his credit, he most definitely qualifies on that count—he is also prone to bouts of reverie, imagining in his mind’s eye his next distant landfall. But it’s also no exaggeration to note that Stanley’s daydreams are much bigger and bolder than your average mariner’s. For a little less than a year from now, he will set off from his home in St. Augustine, Florida, to begin a truly epic voyage, a non-stop spin around the planet that he hopes to complete in 120 days or less.

By the way, when he hoists sail to start his trip, he will be 76 years old. If his dreams come true, when he returns he will be the record-setting, “most senior” sailor ever to complete such an arduous journey.

As I discovered late last month during one of his initial sea trials off Newport, Rhode Island, he certainly has the tool for the job—a stunning, 63-foot 8-inch state-of-the-art offshore cruiser, the Paris 63, designed by the engineers at Farr Yacht Design and lovingly brought to existence with extraordinary attention to detail by the craftsmen at the Maine shipyard of Lyman-Morse.

Stanley’s boat—the appropriately named Kiwi Spirit —is a unique vessel on several fronts. For now, the yacht is fit out as a lavishly appointed cruising boat with full amenities, including staterooms, a powerful diesel, a generator, refrigeration, and just about everything you’d want in a long-range voyager. However, when Stanley takes off for the high seas, almost all of it will be gone.

Yes, nearly everything down below—the modular furniture and the heavy-duty machinery—can be removed via the companionway, and that will be the fate of nearly all the gear and creature comforts before Stanley departs. Among his many goals will be the first-ever completion of a completely green, non-stop and non-assisted passage, with nary a drop of fuel aboard. Instead, for power, he will rely on a suite of solar panels, a series of wind generators, and a quartet of hydro-generators, the juice from which will be stored in a bank of ion phosphate batteries.

Afterwards, all the good stuff will come back on board and Stanley will take his wife cruising. Kiwi Spirit , with a lifting keel and a convertible interior, is most certainly the definition of a dual-purpose boat.

We’ll get into more detail on Stanley and his steed in the February issue of Cruising World . For now, all I can say is, as I drove Kiwi Spirit upwind at 10 easy knots on Narragansett Bay, I had a dream of my own. What would it be like to be a stowaway?

AMERICA'S CUP

Following many years of extensive cruising in a Farr Pilothouse 60 (Design 320), Dr. Stanley Paris commissioned this new design for a high performance offshore passage making and cruising yacht.

Early in the life of the boat, Dr. Paris will participate in some short-handed racing and then attempt to set or break non-stop records as the oldest person  to solo circumnavigate and then include the shortest solo circumnavigation from St Augustine, FL, and Bermuda.

Dr. Paris intends to tackle this feat without use of fossil fuels, relying on solar panels, wind generators and hydro-generators for his circumnavigation beginning late 2013.  These technologies will also reduce reliance on generators in its later cruising life.

The general approach has been to use modern design concepts and construction methods to produce a conservative but fast and sea kindly vessel that can cover oceans quickly and provide a comfortable and spacious live aboard experience.

A lifting keel provides reasonable draft for entering anchorages.  High performance and safety while sailing are achieved with the deep keel, hybrid Carbon, Kevlar and Glass fiber sandwich construction, relatively narrow waterline beam, long waterline length and a moderate amount of water ballast tucked into the generous beam at deck.

The carbon spar cutter rig, permanent roller furling genoa and staysail, plus slab reefing mainsail will make sail handling straight forward, while furling reacher and asymmetric spinnaker can be set from the retractable bowsprit for speed and nice balance in lighter reaching and downwind conditions.

The layout features sail controls led to a central cockpit steering position for ease of short-handed sailing, significant on deck shelter in a “hard” dodger over the companionway and cockpit seating, plus an integrated deployable soft dodger to further shelter the steering station.

The very spacious interior features a huge aft owners stateroom, generous center salon, galley and chart table area, plus two private cabins forward.

All appliances are electric, with energy abundance provided via a 17 Kw/hr Lithium battery pack and a 11 Kw generator during the cruising phase to minimize charging time when alternative generation is not available.

Construction is by Lyman Morse in Thomaston, Maine, with all major components infused.

LM Farr 63 Performance Offshore Sailing Yacht

  • SPECIFICATIONS

Lyman-Morse Farr 63 Performance Offshore Cruiser

In the fall of 2012, we launched hull No. 1 of a new series of boats that we believe will redefine offshore family sailing. Named  Kiwi Spirit , Stanley Paris commissioned the Bruce Farr design in order to create a boat capable of taking him around the world in a solo, non-stop circumnavigation at age 76, with the capability to act as a performance family cruiser following this voyage.

High reliability in all sailing conditions, in addition to high performance, were design parameters and the rig and sail plan have been drawn accordingly. An emphasis has been placed on short-handed and family cruising. A water ballast system will allow the boat to be trimmed for speed and comfort. Epoxy-infused carbon, kevlar, and E-glass with a structural core will ensure a stiff, lightweight hull.

The concept of this series is essentially to build a number of semi-custom boats, optimizing the tooling developed for the Paris 63 while creating boats that meet the individual needs and requirements of different clients.

We are offering three different interior layouts for this design:

  • Version A: This is the layout features an owner’s cabin aft.
  • Version B: This layout places the main salon aft, beneath the cockpit and adjacent to the large midship galley. Two large cabins are located forward of the galley, while the forward section of the boat is a useful foc’sle.
  • Version C: A “traditional” layout featuring two cabins aft, a midship main salon and galley with owner’s cabin forward.

Kiwi Spirit

Like many thoroughbred horses, the Lyman-Morse-built, Farr-designed sloop Kiwi Spirit will be vetted on many levels as it goes through a purpose-driven existence. Speed, strength, endurance, and adaptability are key in its conceptualization as a circumnavigating voyager.

The boat was commissioned by veteran sailor Stanley Paris whose drive is fueled by his previous circumnavigations and desire to break the record of being the oldest person to sail solo non-stop around the world. Dr. Paris is a 76-year-old physical therapist originally from New Zealand, but who now resides in St. Augustine, Fla. Paris describes his use of the boat in three phases. Phase one, the “get-acquainted stage” starts right after the boat is launched in late summer. His plans for the initial shakedown include sail regattas and long races such as the 2012 ARC Rally from the Canaries to St. Lucia, and the Marion Bermuda Race. During this phase, Kiwi Spirit will be outfitted with a comfortable cruising interior, including typical mechanicals and other amenities one would expect to find on a quality 63-footer built by a world-class boatyard like Lyman-Morse.

Stanley Paris reviews the design for his sloop at Lyman-Morse boatbuilding.

Phase two minimizing In preparation for phase two, Kiwi Spirit , will return to Lyman-Morse for some serious “minimizing.”

The boat will be transformed into an ideal round-the-world racing sled for a seasoned solo sailor. Pounds will be shed through the removal of heavy items, such as air conditioning units, generator, and most of the modular furniture forward of the mast. Even the engine and its running gear will be extracted from the boat and laid aside. This is in keeping with Dr. Paris’ goal to leave no carbon footprint as he makes a fast safe trip around the world. To break the existing record set by Dodge Morgan in 1986, Paris will have to complete the circumnavigation in less than 150 days. His confidence in the boat, the builder, and himself are unshakable.

To build a boat up to the task is no easy feat and a challenge that few boatyards can meet. Paris chose Lyman-Morse because of their reputation for high-quality composite construction, engineering expertise, and superior craftsmanship. The hull is built out of epoxy-infused carbon, E-glass and Kevlar with a thermo-core that is both stiff and lightweight. There is a hydraulic lifting keel which draws 14 feet, nine inches (down) for excellent upwind performance. The boat draws eight feet, seven inches when the keel is up, allowing entry into most bays.

There are four water ballast compartments to help counter the powerful rig and make the boat more comfortable in heavy air. The hard dodger is deep and wide, providing ample space for crew to stay dry yet within close reach of all sail controls for quick trimming. An easy-to-manage sail plan has been incorporated, with all lines leading aft to the cockpit.

Wind and hydro power While circumnavigating, Kiwi Spirit will emit no hydrocarbons, as the main engine and generator will have been removed and set aside at the shipyard. Wind and hydro generators will augment a massive array of solar panels that will cover most surfaces. This energy will be stored in the house battery bank which consists of lightweight lithium-ion batteries. The battery bank has been sized to provide adequate power to run all the electronics, including the autopilot, which can have a large power draw, especially in a following sea. The inventive NKE autopilot features a wireless man-overboard remote, which when activated, will cause the boat to round up, increasing the likelihood of a self-rescue. A PC-based navigation system will run MaxSea software.

Interior accommodations for under construction. The interior will be dropped into the boat following completion. For the circumnavigation, modular furniture will be removed to reduce displacement.

Kiwi Spirit ’s interior, although capable of being paired down to its essence is none-the-less fitting of a yacht turned out by the expert craftsmen at Lyman-Morse. Perfect varnish and matching red birch veneers compliment the precise joinery. Accommodations include three cabins with the owner’s stateroom aft, two guest cabins, and three full heads with separate showers. The large galley, located amidships, sports a top-loading fridge and freezer. Fresh and salt water are brought to the sink via foot pumps, limiting electrical power draw.

Finally, a family cruiser When Kiwi Spirit has finished her circumnavigation, the third jewel in its “Triple Crown” will begin; that of a family cruiser. Once again, she will return to Lyman-Morse for a refit. The end result will be an unusual and extraordinary undertaking for Lyman-Morse. Paris was attracted to Lyman-Morse because of Cabot Lyman’s circumnavigations and more than 250,000 miles at sea. This coupled with the yard’s history of incorporating modern technology with traditional methodology, made them the obvious builder of choice. As Drew Lyman said, “May Kiwi Spirit make many safe passages, and may Stanley live long to tell of the voyages.”

Price again reduced  to 745,000 US$ – and just updated. Watch it bargain hunters – This boat represents a real opportunity !

July 2019 Owner Comments:

“Have just had KS on the hard. New rudders, steering overhaul, replaced all anodes, hull and topsides polished. Watermaker serviced, engines serviced and various other bits and bobs. Looks a million dollars! Fresh underwater survey undertaken for insurers.Discovery have now built six 50’s. Latest just launched at cost of GBP 1.2+ million ex/VAT. Surely at current asking and with low value of Sterling KS represents exceptionally good value!”

KIWI SPIRIT is the only used Discovery 50 cat for sale worldwide. Somebody who wants one either must buy factory new at GBP 1.1m on a like for like spec basis or make a realistic offer for Kiwi Spirit. Owner has reduced the price to GBP635k and is open to offers. She represents a significant discount upon new and is available now. Fully sorted. A new build will take a year plus a season of debugging and usual warranty issues!

The boat has just been hauled and has had an under water inspection by a professional marine surveyor. She has had her copper coat antifouling refreshed. Engines have been serviced and on a preventative maintenance basis the sail drive diaphragms have been replaced. At the same time we have replaced propeller seals and bearings. She has a new sprayhood and Bimini.

In short she is a turn-key proposition, ready to go, in first class order throughout with full cruising inventory and could be in the Caribbean for the winter season.

KIWI SPIRIT is set up for short-handed world cruising with effortless handling, in style and with considerable comfort.  She is fully equipped and truly ready for “take off”.   This exceptional and rare Discovery 50 is essentially a turn-key proposition. Sail handling is a facilitated with twin furling head sails, self-tacking jib and in mast-furling along with electric winches. All the re-fitting and upgrades have been done and most importantly she is “fully sorted”. The high specifications speaks for itself.

Additional Specifications

KIWI SPIRIT was formally named DISCOVERY MAGIC and originally built for the Chairman of Discovery Yachts Ltd. This vessel received much acclaim in the yachting press.

This beautiful 50ft catamaran is like new. Kiwi Spirt was acquired by the current owner in 2013 with the intention of sailing her back to New Zealand. The current owner is a very experienced multihull owner and has spent a lot of time and money getting her up to his exacting standards and ready to cruise the world. Where it has been possible to improve upon the original specification then the current owner has done so – with no expense spared!

The only reason for sale is a change in circumstances due a terminal illness. Consequently, since purchase, she has had exceptionally little used but has been fastidiously maintained. She is available at a substantial discount upon replacement cost.  She is sparkling and is equipped with everything you need to go long (or short) distance live aboard cruising  New sails, new batteries, new paint job and new bits everywhere with most of it having little or no use since re-commissioning.

KIWI SPIRIT is set up for short-handed world cruising with effortless handling, in with style and with considerable comfort.  She is fully equipped and truly ready for “the off”.   She is essentially a turn-key proposition. All the re-fitting and expense have been done and most importantly she is “fully sorted”. The high specifications speaks for itself.

Owners Comments:

Having completed a 5-year circumnavigation in a 65ft monohull I reached the conclusion that the ideal vessel for live-board long distance cruising has to be a catamaran. One spends a lot of time at anchor so stability, good visibility and an inside-outside flow are all desirable characteristics. A good dingy is essential – preferably a RIB. A cat provides an excellent platform for a good RIB kept on davits. This makes for quick easy dingy drop and retrieval. The transom steps on a catamaran provide ease of boarding. All essential attributes for comfortable live aboard cruising.

Before purchasing Discovery Magic and transforming her into Kiwi Spirit, I looked at and tried all the well-known production Catamarans in the size range 45ft to 55ft (and some lesser known designs). All were found lacking in one respect or another – until we came across the Discovery 50. By Catamaran standards Kiwi Spirit has to be one of the best looking cats afloat. She is much admired wherever we go. By any standard, the design, fit-out and build quality put her in a different league to all others that we looked at.  With all the upgrades and improvements that I have since carried out she would be hard to beat and needs to be viewed to be fully appreciated.

Ease of handling by a retired husband and wife combination was an important consideration. Sail handling is a doddle with twin furling headsails, self-tacking jib and in mast-furling along with electric winches. Good off-wind performance is achieved by an A3, asymmetrical reaching spinnaker, a Parasail downwind spinnaker and a self-furling storable Code Zero.  Upwind performance is the Achilles heel of most Catamarans but thanks to a narrow sheeting angle and a large overlapping Genoa Kiwi Spirit will go to windward, like a monohull, at a sailing angle of just 35 degree apparent!  This sets her apart from the majority of cruising catamarans.

Reliable engines and a good range under power are also important attributes for a long distance cruising yacht. With her twin 75Hp Yanmar engines there is worldwide service back-up. With her optional long range fuel tanks Kiwi Spirit has a range of around 1,750nm under power.

Put simply, this Discovery 50 Cat redefines luxury live-aboard short-handed long distance cruising!
