The NACRA 17 was designed from scratch to meet the specific criteria set out by ISAF for the 2016 Olympic multihull. entering these products,NACRA also produce a Formula 16 and a Formula 18 catamaran and we had initially considered entering these products, but with some changes in order to more closely match the ISAF requirements.

Since ISAF’s specification did not require the design to conform to any existing class rule, we were considering adding performance-enhancing features like a carbon mast and curved dagger boards. The F16 class and F18 class rules do not allow either of these features.

After doing some further research into the ISAF requirements and what was possible within this design space, we determined that neither the F16 nor F18 platforms would be ideal within the set ISAF criteria and for Olympic Athlete’s.

Since no existing design or class fits the ISAF specs, we decided to create an all-new design that is about 17 feet long, called the NACRA17. Compared to an F16 class catamaran, it is 250mm longer, 100mm wider, has a taller mast and more sail area, and curved dagger boards. Curved dagger boards are a relatively new technology that is quickly gaining acceptance in catamarans. They have been used mostly on offshore trimarans in the past, and used primarily as a way to increase longitudinal stability and shift underwater center of effort forward to prevent leeward helm downwind.

These trimarans all have center-hull straight dagger boards for upwind sailing. In the last few years curved foils have appeared on A Class catamarans, the NACRA F20 Carbon and SL33 catamarans, and some custom and limited production catamarans. All of these designs successfully incorporate constant-curvature dagger boards, commonly referred to as “C foils”. The innovation with the curved foils on catamarans is that they are used to enhance performance for both upwind and downwind sailing. Performance improvements with the c-foils have been well documented in the A class catamarans and c-foil equipped boats have won the World Championships for the last several years.

Other foil geometries have been tested on the A Class cats but so far the c-foils have proven to provide the best all-around performance and are by far the most user-friendly and practical solution.

For the NACRA 17 we chose c-foils for the following reasons:

  • C foils have proven to make catamarans easier to sail, especially downwind. They provide lift which helps keep the bows up and reduces the tendency to pitch pole. The extra lift generated from the foil helps reduce hull wetted area and markedly reduces hull drag.
  • There are other foil geometries that could provide efficient lift but all the ones we evaluated for the NACRA 17 had issues that we determined were not suitable for this type of boat. For instance, L foils are not able to be retracted from the top and would make launching and beaching problematic. We are also not convinced that L foils would be faster on this type of boat. They would certainly create more drag in light air, due to having more wetted area. The windward L board would also need to be lifted to reduce drag and unwanted vertical lift on the windward side, thereby making the boat much harder to tack. C foils can be left down on the windward side since they automatically reduce their vertical lift when on the windward side.
  • C-foils make the boat more exciting to sail. The ISAF Olympic Multihull Evaluation Committee report and individual sailor reports confirms this. There is an added dimension of control and speed that can be attained after gaining some experience sailing with them. We believe that this is an area that should be exploited with a modern racing catamaran and is why you see them on the NACRA 17, NACRA F20 Carbon, and SL33 catamarans. The hull shape of the NACRA 17 was designed specifically to work in harmony with the C- foils. You can add lifting foils to conventional catamaran hull shapes, but you will not realize the full benefit of the foils. This fact has been proven in the A Class catamarans and is apparent to those who are designing the next generation of Americas Cup catamarans. The NACRA 17’s new-generation hulls have about 40% greater longitudinal stability than recent conventional shaped catamarans. This increased stability comes without the drag normally associated with creating high longitudinal stability in conventional shapes, and allows the sailors to push the boat much harder downwind.Anyone in the world can become part of the NACRA family and start racing. Simply by starting to contact one of our Nacra dealers and/or distributors spreaded over the world. Just go out and ask for a demo ride on one of these boats to see for your self how cool it is.Nacra, Empowering sailors since 1975

Nacra 17 Class Association

The Nacra 17 class organization is involved in every step the Olympic boat takes. After the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the class and Nacra Sailing agreed to evolve the boat to become a fully foiling catamaran. The Nacra 17 class is open for every sailor with that Olympic ambition.

Website: Nacra 17 Class Association

The Nacra 17 has the stiffest platform to be found in this class. The wave piercing design results in a boat which has less drag and a more constant high speed. A strong and robust built boat but light at the same time. Makes it a catamaran with superb handling but challenging to sail. Finally, the carbon mast ensures both safety and performance. A true Olympic class catamaran designed for those sailors that want to be in front of the fleet every time.

For the design, the Nacra team joined forces with Morrelli & Melvin. This world-famous design office is known for their America’s Cup involvement and other successful multihull projects. Nacra Sailing and Morelli & Melvin have already worked closely together for many successful years.

Nice one. I've never seen one close by. I've spent most of the time under MIG-21 - we were training facility. Good thing that we have unlimited supply of ethanol from defroster system. (Vodka is 40% ethanol and 60% water)

Well, I'd speak my native language - Russian, and a little English I've been taught in high school, nothing changes for me. Wouter, probably, would know Russian too, besides his excellent English, which is a good thing; an extra language helps to see a bigger picture.

I lost long list of relatives because my native country didn’t allow to get rolled, and soldiers of that country put red flag on top of Reichstag in may 1945. I remember my granddad's war stories about french air brigades, fighting as part of Red army. So, I really don’t see how Americans popping up into war after 6 years of fighting could change outcome of war. It definitely changed outcome of peace after war, but it’s another story, right?
And yeah, lendlease was a good thing, best Russian pilots were rewarded with American airplanes

Canned meat wasn’t that good, though

Cold War, isn't so, Vladimir?
And, IMHO, you uderestimate lend-lease influence on our war efforts. Especially in trucks, explosives, industrial equpment.

Where did you learn that phrase?

I think it is all over the world aviation phrase. In Russia it sounds something like this: "With good engine even fence can fly"

That would be the Israelis. Sorry mate.

At least they succesfully pulled off raids like Entebbe and Osirak.

You guys still have a few plane wrecks in the Iranian Great Salt Desert several hundred miles short of their intended destination.

Would that answer :

You are the airforce that THINKS they are the best and as a result you %#*@-up sometimes. As in Korea and such

Don't get me wrong, your airforce and planes are alright but just not the best. The biggest problem with US units always is that they think that they are invisible and that the other side is nothing more then dumb unwashed thugs. The only generation of US service men that knew better were the WW2 generation, but then they didn't have the luxury of believing stupid things.

Yeah, atomic bombing of Japanise city two days prior to Russian invasion of Japan, announced 9 months before at Yalta conference.

Anybody know what happened to the pilots of the bomber? I've heard, they didn’t do well mentally after.

I had a college roommate whose father was the navigator on one of the planes that may have dropped the bomb. He said they did not tell the airmen which plane had the bomb. Contrary to the movie he said, all the airmen decided to leave this world, shortly thereafter including his dad.

Suprised it took me this long. I've had enough of his drivel. While I take nothing away from the Russians who lost a whole generation during WW2, the notion that the battles of Normandy, Anzio, and the Bulge do not warrant the US and its Western Allies a victory is purely offensive, and historically incorrect.

I've got a grandfather that will show you his battallion picture before they shipped out to Northern Africa. He'll then count on one hand, then number of them that made it to Germany. Then he'll show you his arm, that was nearly burned off by a phosphorous grenade. And maybe, if he really really likes you, he'll show you a picture of his ammo boy, who had his head blown off while charging a AA emplacement and whose body continued to run, headless, for 50 feet before falling to the ground.

As for our Airforce. Take a look at the first night of the first Gulf War.

Plugboats - everything electric boats and boating

Classic look hydrofoiling electric boat debuts in Moscow

A team in Russia has developed this sleek hydrofoiling electric boat with a retro-tech classic runabout look, both inside and out.

The boat is called the Molniya – Russian for ‘lightning’ – and uses fixed surface piercing (SP) foils rather than the retractable inverted-T fully submerged (FS) type on boats like the Candela 7 .

The Molniya prototype was built by Artem Markov and a small team he assembled in Moscow. Markov is a graduate of the Moscow Automobile and Road Construction Institute, where he was part of their Formula MADI electric car racing team that competed against other universities from around the world.

Hydrofoiling electric boat idea started in 2016

Like many other electric boat developers he is also a long time sailor and says “ I have never been able to understand what is the beauty of going on motor boats with a lot of vibration and noise. So, I decided I wanted to find a way to transfer the silence and comfort of a sailing yacht to a boat. The idea came to me in 2016, and from that moment I started working on the project .”

He is a big fan of the work that the team at Candela has been doing, and is well versed in their reasonings of why hydrofoiling is the way to reduce drag and increase efficiency and comfort. So he knew foiling was the way to go and began to design his dream boat.

hydrofoiling electric boat has static foils on the hull close to the waterline

It is one thing to know exactly what one wants, but b udget realities quite often make inventors adapt. So he found a classic fibreglass-and-aluminum hull and went to work redesigning and converting it. The team had to strengthen and reinforce the hull to handle the stresses from the front foils. At the stern of the boat they designed  protruding half-wings that would help lift the boat onto those front SP foils as it accelerated.

80kW motor mounted to stern drive unit

nacra foiling catamaran

That gives the 8.9 m • 29 ft boat a cruising speed of about 20 kts • 37 km/h and maximum speed of 36 kts • 66km/h. As for range, the Molniya can go for 135 Nautical miles at 5 kts, 17 Nm at 25 kts and 20 Nm at the top speed.

For the battery, they have taken stock lithium-ion cells and developed the modules themselves. The size is 160kW and there are some creative and useful ideas incorporated into the charging and battery management systems. One is the ability to connect a warning system to a GPS route so if you are driving at a speed that is taking yo u beyond range of getting back to shore the motor will automatically slow down. When you do get back, a full 0-100% charge takes 3.5 hours and you can check status through SMS.

hydrofoiling electric boat has dashboard with wood steering wheel and gauges similar to a 1950s car interior

One of the intriguing things about the Molniya is that all of the electric boat technology has been incorporated into a striking overall retro look. The dashboard looks like it might have been taken from a 1950s luxury car catalogue, but of course the actual meters are all digital. The interior of the entire boat harkens back to an earlier day, appearing ready to whisk 6 passengers off to a swing era supper club.

From prototype to production

Having built and tested the prototype from an existing hull, the goal of Markov and the team is to move to production mode and use the materials he always envisioned in his dream boat. While the aluminum and fibreglass of the original have been useful for testing, speed and range will benefit from materials like much lighter carbon-kevlar.

hydrofoiling electric boat seen from above

The adapted stern drive was useful for proving the hydrofoiling electric boat concept, but all of the designers and engineers are keen to see the improved efficiency they will get from a motor, drive and battery system they have designed from scratch for the Molniya. As for the foils themselves, the production model will use lighter, thinner composites instead of stainless steel.

Obviously the spring and summer of 2020 has not provided the best opportunities to introduce the prototype at boat shows and stir up interest with consumers, the trade or investors. It seems, though that the Molniya is the type of boat that should appeal to peopl looking for the same thing Artem wanted for himself: a classic motor boat experience but one that is quiet, odour free…and smooth sailing.

You can find out more on the Molniya website, lightning-foil.com .

  9. Nacra 17

For the NACRA 17 we chose c-foils for the following reasons: C foils have proven to make catamarans easier to sail, especially downwind. They provide lift which helps keep the bows up and reduces the tendency to pitch pole. The extra lift generated from the foil helps reduce hull wetted area and markedly reduces hull drag.

  17. What Inflatable Sailboats have you sailed?
