Beneteau’s Oceanis Yacht 62 – tested and reviewed

Beneteau’s oceanis yacht 62 is the latest leviathan from the french giant. sam jefferson investigates what the big fuss is all about.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

I t wasn’t long ago that yachts in the 60-70ft bracket were largely being built by semi custom yards which tailored these giant boats to the requirements of clients – generally at a premium price. The idea that mass producers would ever dabble in these markets seemed a remote one. After all, the ‘big four’ of yacht manufacturing (Hanse, Bavaria, Beneteau and Jeanneau) all rely on churning out huge volumes of yachts at relatively low prices in order to make a profit. It didn’t seem likely that they would make a play for this market, yet the last couple of years have seen that concept shattered.

Jeanneau made the first play with its 64 and Hanse followed suit with its huge 675. To the surprise of some, both have been able to turn a healthy margin of profit by producing unprecedented numbers of these big boats. It was only a matter of time before Beneteau decided it would muscle in on the act.

The result is the Oceanis Yacht 62. Confusingly, this is a yacht in a separate bracket altogether from the Oceanis range and is actually the first of an entirely new line of yachts that will eventually feature a 73ft flagship. The 62 is also a definite departure for the Beneteau group in terms of styling. It has turned to its tried and tested Berret/Racoupeau design team but they have worked alongside Italian designer Pierangelo Andreani, who previously worked on their Monte Carlo motoryacht range, for the styling. The remit has been to be bold and also adopt some of the motoryacht styling – an approach pioneered by Jeanneau in its 64.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

The result is certainly startling and definitely modern to the point of being brutalist. There’s a generous amount of freeboard, while the modern trend for squaring things off has been taken to new lengths – or angles. This angular approach is further exemplified by a thick black stripe running along the middle of the topsides. Sort of like an Oreo in reverse if you know what I mean. Anyway, this serves the purpose of creating the illusion of less freeboard and also hiding a number of huge portlights in the side of the hull which would otherwise tend to disrupt the look and lines of the boat. As with all recent Beneteaus, she features that distinctive arch over the cockpit which isn’t to everyone’s taste, but certainly provides a practical and sensible solution to where to site the mainsheet on a cruising yacht. No question: she is a striking yacht.

Step aboard and you immediately realise that she is also a genuinely huge yacht. There’s simply acres of deck space, even compared with a 50-footer, and it is here where the motorboat styling is perhaps most noticeable. The cockpit is divided into two fairly distinct areas, with a large communal seating area forward which is sectioned off from the ‘working’ area of the yacht further aft by two solid pods with the wheels and all the winches just aft. This means that, with all the sail controls led through channels in the deckhead and emerging from the cockpit coamings right next to the twin helming positions, the forward part of the cockpit is entirely devoid of ropes. This makes for a simply huge area to sunbathe and socialise.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

The instruments are also let into the coamings, with the remainder built into substantial pods on the steering pedestals. With a plethora of push-button controls for furling both the mainsail and headsail, everything is very much to hand for the helmsman. Meanwhile, the rise of the electric winch means that there is no doubt that, despite this yacht’s substantial size, she’s easy to handle shorthanded.

Aft of the helming station is a massive drop-down bathing platform which is accessed from either port or starboard by substantial fixed steps that look like something off a superyacht. The tender garage follows that theme, featuring an elaborate pull-out track for ease of deploying the dinghy, with everything done electrically. The tender garage is 3.5m by 1.7m, so this is far more practical than most equivalents seen on large cruising yachts. Between the steps down to the bathing platform is a bench that lifts up to reveal a sink and barbecue area. There is no question that this is a yacht optimised for lazy Mediterranean cruising.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

Head forward along broad side decks with decent handholds and there is another lounging area let into the deckhead. Retractable cleats abound and the general feel is of high quality. Up at the bow there is a modest crew quarters that can double as storage, while the anchor is set well outboard on a substantial stainless steel bow roller. This is also utilised for setting the Code 0.

The interior volume has actually been cut down substantially on the 62 by the huge tender garage and also the crew quarters forward. Yet this is such a voluminous vessel that the saloon still feels genuinely very large. The layout is pretty straightforward with a palatial owner’s cabin forward featuring an en suite. There are two smaller but still generous doubles aft. The starboard aft berth has an en suite, while to port there is the option of either one double with en suite or a smaller bunk room instead. In the saloon, the galley runs longitudinally down the starboard side with the main living area and chart table to port. The chart table is decently proportioned and sensibly situated nice and close to the cockpit.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62 - Interior

The styling is very modern and clean; it’s very uncluttered and most appliances are hidden behind covers to the point where it’s hard to identify exactly what the galley is until you start lifting up a few of them. There is just the slightly bland feel of a Travelodge permeating throughout. It is a supremely light and pleasant place to be, however.

The forward cabin in particular is a triumph of comfort, with a real feeling of space and luxury plus masses of headroom. As you’d expect, the yacht is absolutely loaded with electric gizmos and the options list is substantial. You can stick a washer/dryer in a short corridor that leads from the saloon to the owner’s suite, for example.

The day of my test sail was one of those Mediterranean days where you wake up to a flat calm and spend the remainder of the day praying for the sea breeze to kick in. This did happen, but painfully slowly, so we started the test with about 8kt of breeze that reluctantly built to 12kt at its peak. Given that the 62 weighs a substantial 24,000kg, I was interested to see how she would perform at lugging a dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing machine and a million other gizmos around in a fickle breeze.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62 - Interior

Before that, however, we had to get out of our berth and, even in the calm conditions, this might have proven a challenge on such a large yacht. Yet times have changed: bow thrusters, stern thrusters and even side thrusters mean that such operations do not have to be intimidating. You can turn the 62 on a sixpence and she’s far easier and more sympathetic to handle than a 30ft-long keel yacht. It’s part of the reason that manufacturers have been able to introduce larger and larger yachts to their customers: by and large, these yachts are designed to be handled by their owners, not a paid crew, to this end, everything is optimised for effortless handling. This point was amply demonstrated when we unfurled the sails at the push of a button. The 62 needs a generous sail area to push her substantial displacement through the water and Beneteau has obliged with 182m 2 of sail area. This is further augmented by an immense Code 0, pushing up her already substantial sail area.

It was fortunate that we were carrying this Code 0 as it proved the saving grace in the light conditions. This massive sail was able to drive the heavy yacht on at a good pace and, despite the very modest conditions, we were able to eke over 6kt out of her.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

She was also surprisingly agile given the conditions and had a good feel. Often with these very large yachts it’s easy to end up feeling somewhat divorced from the action, rather like you’re at the helm of a cross-Channel ferry. Yet, with the 62, there was sufficient feel to counter this.

I would never suggest that the Beneteau is a spectacular sailing yacht, but what the French manufacturers have come to perfect over the years is the balance between cruising comfort and workmanlike sailing performance. It would also be interesting to have her out sailing in some heavier conditions, as that long waterline length and powerful sail plan suggest she could be good fun.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

Sam’s Verdict

Beneteau knows what it’s about and the new 62 is a fine vessel which is an absolute dream for anyone planning a lazy cruise through the Med in total comfort. She is easily handled by a couple, while the crew accommodation opens up another option. She would also do well in the luxury charter market. The yacht does not try to compete with the bespoke luxury bluewater yachts in the Discovery/Oyster bracket and the fit out is unquestionably not quite in the same league. Yet that is repaid in the price tag, which is astonishingly low, considering what you get.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

At the stern is a garage for a for tender with easy access by two stairways. The platform can be lowered down to the sea for easy tender launching.

Oliver Racoupeau comments:

“The challenge was to achieve a high average speed and a guaranteed reserve stability in the medium-term. I designed the Oceanis Yacht 62 with performance, safety and perfect maneuverability in mind: maximum length on water line, perfectly adapted sail area, lowest possible center of gravity and maneuvering centered in the cockpit. I then concentrated on everything our experience of super yachts could contribute to this first Beneteau yacht. Get ready to leave the traditional yachting world and to enter a whole new world where lifestyle is paramount.”

In the shown version, the salon has a bright wood for a good addition to the windows and skylights to make it brighter. The salon offers a seating area for about eight people, navigation desk, a galley with dishwasher and a hidden washing machine. There is also a retractable galley outside at the aft with a kitchen sink, refrigerator and the opinion to grill for up to 12 good friends or family members in the cockpit.

The owner lives forward with ensuite bathroom. Thanks to the generous use of windows and skylights, the cabin of the Bénéteau Oceanis 62 is rich of daylight.

Interior designer Pierangelo Andreani  says:

“A strong character and beautiful in every respect. I maintained the idea of a horizontal line from which the whole design stemmed. I admit that the Beneteau project was complex and ever so ambitious! It meant using all the qualities of a one-off on a production yacht, combining style, elegance, and lifestyle with simple sailing and a high-performance hull. The initial feeling in the first drawings remains. This first yacht will turn over a new leaf in the story of your life as an owner. Of this I am sure.”

First sea trials aboard hull number one of a rockin’ new flagship  (published September 2016)

It’s not often that I get the scoop on a new design, much less one that is built across the Atlantic where European builders play their cards close to their vests. So, this summer, I felt privileged to be the first journalist to do a thorough walkthrough and test sail off the coast of France of the new Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62.

Beneteau 62 bow

TOPSIDES A massive stainless steel bowsprit dominates the foredeck. It holds the anchor well away from the plumb bow to minimize the inevitable hull dings when the anchor comes out of the water. It also serves as the attachment-point for the optional Code 0 (nearly 2,600 square feet) that will make the 62 fly downwind.

The tapered nine-tenths fractional rig supports 1,959 square feet of sail area between the 105-percent genoa and the in-mast furling main. The deck-stepped Sparcraft rig has triple aft-swept spreaders and all the lines are led aft to four electric Harken winches on the cockpit coaming near the helms. As on other Beneteau models, there is no traveler and the mainsheet connects to the composite cockpit arch. Walking back from the bow, I noticed eight retractable cleats that won’t snag sheets.

A forward crew cabin, accessible via the foredeck, is optional and includes a stainless steel ladder, over-under bunks, a sink and a head. Of course, most people will store fenders and lines here.

I was particularly impressed with the excellent lifelines. They are 30 inches high, which befits an offshore vessel, and their presence goes counter to the trend of keeping lifelines low to minimize the profile. I’m glad to see Beneteau departing from this aesthetic and choosing safety instead.

The working cockpit has twin helm stations on composite consoles port and starboard. The stations are comprehensively equipped with Carbonautica wheels, B&G Zeus 12-inch multifunction displays (upgradable to 16 inch NSO B&G displays), Quick bow and stern thruster toggles, remote windlass control, and switches to furl and unfurl the headsail. Our test boat had engine throttles at both stations, low and outboard. I’d prefer to have them on the consoles to avoid bending down when docking. Sightlines are good forward, especially when steering while seated on the side deck.

The entire aft deck serves as a sunpad and hides a galley module below. An electrically activated grill, sink and prep station levitate out of the transom, leaving the chef to stand between the wheels to prepare dinner. A 42-quart mini-fridge is at cockpit sole height next to the port wheel.

Serving meals will be easy as well. The social cockpit has a U-shaped settee on either side with two electric high-low tables and a path to the companionway in between. When lowered, the area turns into a lounge with double sunpads.

With the sunpad on the bow, the two pads alongside the companionway (under the dodger if there is one), the cockpit pads and the full beam sun lounge aft, 10 people can work on their tans simultaneously.

One thing that may need to be rethought is the liferaft compartment below the cockpit sole at the companionway. This is a non-draining locker that creates suction and lifting the lid is only for the very strong.

The electric swim platform aft is impressive and Beneteau really dialed it in for three reasons. First, there are staircases port and starboard that lead down to it from the cockpit. These are not mere ladders but real, easily maneuvered stairs. Second, the platform is enormous and this teak beach is a perfect playground with easy access to the tender or for staging dive gear. Finally, unlike others that lower to the waterline, this platform angles down at the aft end and below the water. This aids in launching and retrieving the tender and stowing it in the garage that is specifically designed to hold a Williams 2.85 jet tender. Other dinghies will also fit, especially if partially deflated.

Changes are being made to hull number one and she will arrive in the U.S. a bit modified. Each helm will gain larger sheet bags, a compass, a cup holder and a foot brace. A rail along the aft sunpad will also be added because when heeled, there was very little for you to hang onto when changing from one wheel to the other and with a 17-foor, six-inch beam, that’s a long way to go.

Beneeau 62 saloon

From this mini-foyer, you turn one more corner and you’re in a palatial master suite with a centerline bed, several hanging lockers and an en suite head with separate shower stall. Immediately inside the entrance to the right is an area that can be configured as a desk, a short sofa or a chest of drawers—owner’s choice.

Light and air are plentiful from two overhead opening hatches, and large rectangular hull windows, with blackout blinds for privacy. You can see out when lying in bed and that will eliminate midnight trips up to the deck to check your position at anchor.

With the raised cabintop, there is six feet and eleven inches of headroom at the foot of the bed and the whole room feels like a hotel suite. Owners will not feel shortchanged on stowage space, which includes room under the bunk. (Stronger gas shocks will be needed for one person to lift the mattress and keep it raised while reaching inside.)

Two identical guest cabins with slightly varying en suite heads are aft. They could use a bit more ventilation as there are three small opening hatches and two of them, the overhead and the one in the transom, are hard to reach. A note on the transom hatches: Beneteau worked extra hard to be allowed to add these on an offshore vessel. With the cabin doors open, you can sit on the inner settee of the saloon and see all the way aft and out of the back of the boat via, what Beneteau calls, “ the light tunnels”. This gives the perception of length and space, which is impressive. I have to wonder however, once guests pile their luggage, clothes or possessions on that back counter, will the hatches disappear altogether or will anyone want to crawl back on all fours to open (or close) them?

You can shoehorn in a fourth cabin to starboard and lose one of the heads, but I can’t see North American boaters opting for this because this yacht’s interior is, first and foremost, about luxurious space, privacy and haute design.

Hull number one has a mahogany Alpi wood finish offset by numerous white fabrics, leather accents and grey painted hard surfaces. Hull number two has a different color scheme with light brushed oak wood surrounded by acres of white. Beneteau has brought over the luxurious touches from their Monte Carlo powerboat line so there are leather cabinetry pulls, lights tucked behind valences and padded surfaces for sound attenuation.

The amount of light in the saloon can’t be beat with overhead hatches, skylights and three large hull windows on either side in the saloon. Add a high-end sound system (Bose speakers below and Fusion on deck) and four-zone air conditioning by Dometic for all the comforts of home. What’s not to like.

PERFORMANCE We had a blustery day once we came out of the river at Les Sables-d’Olonne. Out on the Atlantic, there was a small swell and a three to four foot chop that was mixing it up with 15-20 knots of wind.

At 55 degrees apparent wind angle (AWA) in 16 knots of true wind, we cruised along at eight knots and that jumped up to 10.2 knots when we eased off to a beam reach. Falling off brought us to 10.4 knots at 140 degrees AWA. Our test boat had laminate Incidence sails and there are various upgrades available.

At one point, a larger wave slapped the hull just forward of the beam, then rose up sharply and doused the cockpit, sending water pouring down the side decks. Yes, it may have been driver miscalculation and yes, that driver may have been me. Other than wet decks and crew, the boat barely noticed and just plowed ahead without stalling or shuddering.

The 62 moves well under power, cruising at eight and a half knots at 2000 rpm where she burns about three gallons per hour. A more economical cruise may be found at six and a half knots and 1400 rpm, burning just over a gallon per hour. Tankage includes 264 gallons of fuel in three tanks so this is a go-far boat even with the sails down.

Oceanis Yacht 62: Taking it up a notch

  • October 28th, 2018
  • Sailing Yacht

It´s some three years since Beneteau introduced the new Oceanis Yacht 62 and has since then stirred up the +60 feet-class. This boat was and still is polarizing with its unconventional, modern and one-of-a-kind design on the one hand and despite this, the yacht has set a new benchmark for production brand flagships with an extraordinarily low entry price of 730.000 Euros ex VAT. One of my followers once commented: “She is certainly one of the most interesting production boats around 60 feet currently on the market.” And she has indeed stirred up the market: The boat has been built more than 40 times since the launch in 2016.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Last week during my visit in Spain to the new Beneteau Sae Trial Base at Port Ginesta I did not just had the chance to test-sail the new Oceanis 46.1 (read the full article here ) but as well to have a couple of hours under canvas on this elegant yacht. At last, I might add, because it is almost exactly two years since I´ve paid my first visit to the boat when she was mooring at Ile des Embiez and I sneaked aboard to make a full walkthrough article in her fine interiors .

The Flagship of Beneteau: Oceanis Yacht 62

The Oceanis Yacht 62 is a pretty impressive hulk: As she is mooring along the pontoon in Ginesta I am awed by her sheer size. In sheer numbers that´s 19.16 metres length over all, 5.33 metres max beam and a max draft of 2.98 metres. The height of her mast above water line is 27 metres. Walking towards her I instantly notice the large bathing platform, which folds down and opens up a proper dinghy garage where a well-sized JetTender would fit in with ease.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Speaking of Garages: Back the year talking to Clemence Bercault who is in charge of the Oceanis boats up until 46 feet, he told me that Beneteau is very strict with tender garage. They would only do one in boats larger than 50 feet because, as they say, if done on smaller boats, both the size of the garage will suffer as well cost valuable space inside of the aft cabins. And this wouldn´t serve anyone: Smaller cabins and tiny dinghies is not what they want to sell. But back to the flagship.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

“My” version featured a plain white hull, Teak both on decks and in the cockpit and a very, very neat looking sprayhood and bimini. Of course, as it is the signature of Beneteau if you will, the flagship herself featured the mainsheet arch which in this yacht isn´t just huge but also very nicely designed – especially with no sprayhood and no bimini attached.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The Oceanis Yacht 62 is a cruiser compared to the Oceanis-family: Moored alongside the Oceanis 55.1 that herself is a proper blue water cruising yacht capable of easily circumventing the globe the 62 was making a pretty tough impression. I was very much excited to see how this boat sails, how she behaves in slow manoeuvring speeds and how she would perform as she would be the biggest boat I was sailing to this date. Let´s cast off then!

Sailing the Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

It was a no-brainer, I can tell you! The Oceanis Yacht 62 is equipped with a mighty powerful bow-thruster and a retractable stern thruster. Casting off was a matter of a minute and two buttons to be pushed. Gently coming off the jetty and being pushed by the 160 horse power Yanmar engine (which by the way wasn´t barely noticeable, well insulated!) the yacht was quickly steaming out of the harbour.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The mighty Genoa with some 88 square metres of canvas was coming out gently – the powerful electric furling system worked without any glitches. Same goes for the mighty halyard winches, of course electric too, that hoisted those nicely cut 95 square metres of the mainsail with similar ease. With both sails up we beared away and the boat heeled gently only a few degrees to leeward and increased her boat speed. Instantly. What I found especially enlightening was the gentle, very, very gentle motion of the boat in the large swell we´ve still had from the previous days with winds of up to 30 knots.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Trim of the sails is a no brainer as well: As every sheet has it´s own winch, the simple push of a button has the winches tightening or loosening the lines. That´s effortless sailing and many people would that find very impressive.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The Oceanis Yacht 62 is surely not a boat primarily conceived to be a circumnavigator . This yacht is made to ensure easy sailing for the skipper and the crew as well as a maximum level of comfort for the guests. There are so many places to catch a nice sunbath – before the mast, to either sides of the entryway of in the cockpit. Everything you can imagine is moved either by electric power or by hydraulics. This, surely, comes with a price tag.

The powerhouse of the Oceanis Yacht 62

Nevertheless, her sailing abilities really impressed me. We of course sailed the boat on either tack to check her performance on every single point of sail. So we began with having her close hauled in light wind conditions (certainly a Code 0 or a Gennaker would have been the better choice, but we sticked to the standard canvas) and worked our way through all points of sail. So, how did she perform?

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

With a wind speed of 10 to 13 knots true we exceeded the 7 knots-mark every time just seconds after the sails had been trimmed to the new point of sail. That said, I took a note at apparent wind angle of 80 degrees, which could count as beam reach, and the boat did move as fast as 7.6 knots over ground. On another occasion, wind increased to 13 knots true, we had the sails sheeted a bit tighter to fit a near-close hauled point of sail and we had her making a nice 8.3 knots over ground.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

That said, I tried the helming positions behind the large steering posts. Of course our boat was fitted with carbon-wheels. If I would have been the owner, for sure, the sprayhood would have been taken down, nevertheless, still having it up, I enjoyed a decent view through the plastic material. Yes, it´s a big son of a bitch, this boat and it takes some time to get accustomed to her size. But the ever so gentle motion is an instant reward for sure.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Both steering posts are equipped with latest Zeus-series B&G plotters, various controls for lights, bathing platform and bow-/stern thruster. Also, the electronic throttle is situated on the pedestal as well, making it obsolete to take a bow everytime you pull the lever. The mounting height of the instruments is exemplary, not too high, not too low.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Well, sadly, not all control panels could be mounted here, so that still some of the indicators and switched find their place around the helm station on the coaming which I would say could be solved by increasing the size of the console. But that´s a minor thing.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

All lines – of course! – are diverted aft to massive jammers. The skipper or helmsman can operate every aspect of the ship´s running rigging from behind the wheel. I would say this configuration is now a must-have except for regatta-racing optimized yachts where you can afford to have a crew member manning a single winch. With the Oceanis Yacht 62´s layout this boat could be sailed by a couple without a doubt. Amazing, isn´t it?

Luxurious sailing in the Oceanis Yacht 62

As I mentioned, sailing abilities are secondary on the Oceanis Yacht 62 although the data gathered and derived from the feel I´ve got taking her rudder under my control, she is a bliss to sail. I remember last summer´s sailing trip in the Baltic Sea when an Oceanis Yacht 62 was sailing past us close hauled in heavy seas and winds of +22 knots true – according to AIS-data she was racing at 14 knots!

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Primary focus is on luxury and this boat has plenty of it, for sure. Let´s take a look at her cockpit. It´s just huge! Look at the thickness of the cushion, look at the area utilized to provide for a unique sensation when being placed here. The mounting of two instead of just one cockpit table makes it possible to walk between them two at any time. Both can be combined to form a single huge dining table.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The tables are rock solid, electrically moved to being lowered up to a point where – folding out the table tops – adding another cushion will form a huge, bed-like lounging area. If both tables are utilized that way I could imagine wild parties and video-shoots taking place here …

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Down in the boat the perceived volume is just staggering. I wouldn´t speak of “standing height” in this boat because the roof is so high up over our heads that it feels like being in a proper house instead of a boat. This particular boat has been fitted with coffee-like colours, all leather-, lacquered and veneered surfaces are done with care and with surprisingly superior craftsmanship – considering that this is still a production boat, not a semi- or custom one off!

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The dining area down in the salon is equally impressive. The extra large table can as well be transformed to double its size for hosting larger groups of guests. The cushion is of such a quality that, once sitting down and making oneself comfortable, getting up seems an unlikely undertaking. There is a Flat-Screen coming up behind the two-seater settee and a library incorporated in the mast stand.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

I totally fell in love with the nav station which is just awesome! The swivel chair reminded me of Captain Kirk´s captains chair in the classic enterprise. The switch panel as well as the huge secondary plotter display are integrated nicely without dominating the salon. Very tasteful. Also, the leather-covered chart table (LINK) is a special thing, very, very nicely done!

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

You know that I do not like very much longitudinal galleys. I am a bit fan of port-side located L-galleys but this is a configuration that is not available with the Oceanis Yacht 62. Instead, the whole starboard side of the salon is completely fitted with a huge … let´s call it kitchen! Because this is what it is. A large 3-flamed-stove, a work top that has the whole length of the salon and stowage so plenty of that I wonder how many bottles of Dom Perignon you could place here.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

A pretty cool thing is a feature for the owners of the boat: The entrance to the forward cabin (or should I call it “cathedral”?) is recessed so that, even if the door is open, there is no chance to take a glance to the private rooms. That´s a nice thing. Notice the plenty of handrails for a safe grib, exemplary because this comes as standard equipment.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

If you´d like to see more of the Oceanis Yacht 62´s interior fittings, please browse my previous article that deals more with her inner qualities : For now, as we are returning back to harbour after roughly two hours of sailing, I try to sum up my feelings about this boat.

The verdict: Pure bliss!

Yes, she is a very nice boat to be sailing with. I found her very gentle, forgiving and calm in every situation. Of course, with wind speeds not exceeding 14 knots the test was not very demanding, but there was still quite a swell on the Med and the most compelling learning of this sea trial for me personally was the unbelievable gentle motion of the boat. Even when we were steaming head up front into the waves it never got to that brutal rocking motion so familiar on other boats.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The Oceanis Yacht 62 is a rewarding boat. She is nice to her owners, nice to her guests. Everything on her is made to feel nice, to function with ease, to make every second worthwhile. A true luxurious cruiser, a nice feeling, a great platform for an unforgettable vacation. In this matter, the Oceanis Yacht 62 might not be a “true” Oceanis, because this series is a cruiser boat for true sailing, but she is certainly a top-yacht worth the title “flagship”.

2017 Beneteau Oceanis 62

Boat Overview

Hull material, boat length (loa), see all details, boat description.

This new world designed by Beneteau stems from a collaboration between Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design and the Italian stylist Pierrangelo Andreani. The first in the range, the Oceanis Yacht 62 offers the key to a new art of having a wonderful time at sea together.

The Oceanis Yacht has that distinctive line recognized by all. She is elegant on the water, encircled with large windows, and her appearance has everything you would expect of an exceptional boat. The Oceanis Yacht 62 has a reassuring design that is balanced and manoeuvrable, with a chined hull, twin rudders and a perfectly centred sail plan.

The incredibly original layout of the Oceanis Yacht 62 is centred on a spacious saloon and separate spaces enjoying great privacy. Bathed in light by huge hull portholes, this luxuriously designed yacht offers noble materials and exclusive woodwork finishes.

The transom opens wide creating a rear platform designed like a terrace over the sea, accessed by a few safe steps located on either side of the dinghy garage. It all opens and closes with hydraulics. Really easy to access, the dinghy garage makes launching considerably easier.

The six sun beds are ideally distributed between the stern of the yacht, cockpit, coachroof and foredeck (double sun bed with lights and speakers built in), offering endless opportunities for pleasure and relaxation.

With an opening roof, the Bimini hard top is an innovative solution protecting from the sun and bad weather. With built-in light and atomiser to refresh the cockpit, it can easily support solar panels or a wind turbine.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 boat test – the next big thing for the world’s biggest builder?

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 21, 2019

Beneteau’s new stepped hull design works so well this Oceanis 46.1 could become its most popular model ever

After upgrading the status of the ominous black clouds ahead from threatening-looking to really quite alarming, we turned to head back downwind… and hoisted even more sail. Boom! As gusts in the high 20s started barrelling through, this yacht really put on a show. Reaching and surfing, we were all whooping with delight, like kids with a powerful toy, especially when we clocked over 14 knots’ boat speed. Now this was what you’d call a test sail!

We were on board Beneteau’s brand new Oceanis 46.1, a design tasked with updating the company’s most popular model, sailing off Port Ginesta, Barcelona, under full main and Code 0. The designer, Pascal Conq, was with us and we had all now become intent on seeing just what this ‘fat-nosed’ new shape was capable of.

It was one of those days when it could have all gone wrong. The fact that it didn’t and that we were actually treated to an exhilarating, unforgettable sail – the type where you step ashore and can’t wipe the grin off your face – simply confirmed that the 46.1 is a quite brilliant new model from the world’s largest boatbuilder. That it looks set to become the biggest-selling cruising monohull is perhaps due to other factors, however.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Replacing a bestseller

To backtrack, the Oceanis 45 I tested in 2011, which went on to win a European Yacht of the Year award, is Beneteau’s most popular model to date. With more than 800 sold, it is arguably the most successful production cruiser of modern times. It’s no surprise then that Beneteau wanted to keep the key strengths and selling points of the 45, nor that it chose to repeat the winning design combination of Finot Conq for hull lines and Nauta Yachts for the styling and interior.

Conq explained that the design team wanted to retain the primary features of sailing performance, spacious cockpit and interior volume. This, he said, has all been placed within a new and more powerful hull shape, with a stepped or full-chined hull, with greater righting moment and the addition of twin rudders for added control.

The new 46.1 also has plenty of options, including a ‘First Line’ upgrade, which further increases performance by adding a taller mast and deeper keel.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

A win-win shape

In 2017 Beneteau launched the Berret Racoupeau-designed 51.1, the first of its new seventh-generation Oceanis range to use this stepped hull, together with a much fuller bow shape. The resultant forward internal volume and particularly sharp Nauta styling helped it sell like hot cakes (more than 200 we are told).

The Oceanis 46.1 shares a similar look and the only main difference with its layout is that there is no option for a crew cabin in the forepeak. However, the chine on the 46.1 runs all the way along the hull above the boot top, unlike the forward chine on the 51.1, which tapers out below the central hull portlight.

“We go in the fat nose direction,” Conq explains. “We found an area where there are no losses, just better performance and space. Take out the volume from under the waterline and put it at the sides – that’s the key!”

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Conq found there was no need to widen the waterline like the Oceanis 51.1, which seems to make for a telling difference on the water. The 46.1’s hull is less dumpy, with less wetted surface area, reveals Conq. This was very evident when I did my first sail trial of the 46.1 in Newport, Rhode Island, when the two boats squared up to each other. The 46.1 simply sailed through the 51.1 and is clearly a more slippery design.

We had glorious conditions, in early September, sailing on the sunny, historic racing waters, in a building thermal breeze of 6-12 knots. That particular 46.1 had a typical US spec, including a shallow 1.75m keel, the standard in-mast furling main, plus an optional large genoa instead of the self-tacking jib. Close-hauled, we clocked 6-6.3 knots in 7.8-8.3 knots true wind. The new bowsprit is a useful addition over the old Oceanis 45, as it encourages the easy deployment of a flying sail. Our speed rose to 8.5 knots with the Code 0 unfurled.

The only minor negative of our Newport trial was a rudder alignment issue, which made that boat want to turn to port. However, as I was to find out during my next outing, there is power in reserve on this new hull shape and no shortage of enjoyment on the helm.

Sailing the GTI model

The Oceanis 46.1 we tested from Port Ginesta in October was a performance ‘First Line’ version, with a deeper, lead bulb keel, a taller mast and a genoa, which provides 28% more sail area. Beneteau says this is an option many clients coming from its First range choose. It was during this test for the European Yacht of the Year competition that we were able to see how the 46.1 handles in wind and waves.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Punching out into a 2m swell and 15 knots true wind, both of which increased with the threatening approach of the dark clouds, the 46.1 showed a comfortable and consistent turn of speed, heading upwind at 7.5 plus knots. Perched to windward, we enjoyed a relatively comfortable motion.

“The camber allows for a less full bow than the Jeanneau,” Pascal Conq remarked, referring to Jeanneau’s latest SO440 and SO490, which have very full forward ends and full chines. He added that this helps to keep the 46.1 from slamming upwind.

We were heeling a fair bit yet there remained a very light, but guiding amount of weather helm. A bar joining the twin rudders and textile linkage to the wheels helps provide direct helm feedback.

After a good spell sailing to weather, we then experienced the exhilarating downwind ride I described earlier. In 20 knots true with Force 6-7 gusts, we were soon easily maintaining double figures. The wake separates at around 11 knots, which happened regularly with a bit of encouragement from the short wave pattern.

These waves were coming across us slightly rather than directly following, but as the apparent wind moved forward with our speed we were able to soak down enough to enjoy some memorable short surfs, clocking between 12-14.5 knots. We weren’t actively trimming either – the main was pinned against the spreaders and the Code 0 sheet was left in the self-tailer jaws – but, boy, was it a fun ride.

Although it was an impressive display of power and speed, what really struck me was how comfortable the Oceanis 46.1 felt. The twin rudders never even hinted that they might lose grip and hand us a scary, expensive or potentially embarrassing broach. This is a reassuring asset on a family cruiser.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Warm weather deck

The Oceanis 46.1 has a modern, Med-style, extra spacious cockpit set-up, extended at each end by a full-beam bathing platform and sunbeds on the flat coachroof. The helm area is similar to that of the 51.1, designed for one person to be able to sail the boat and control the winches from aft. “Clients really like winches aft and out of the cockpit,” Beneteau product manger Clément Bercault explained, reasoning that it leaves a huge cockpit area clear for the family.

The layout allows you to sail the 46.1 short-handed, but only if you are tidy and organised with running rigging. Thankfully, there is a useful locker for rope tails, with a mesh material base to allow draining. There is only just enough room to fit a winch handle between the primary and main winch each side, which may encourage people to opt for the powered winch upgrade.

The helmsman can share the raised panel on which the winches are mounted to keep a dry seat. However, it is too wide in the aft quarters to be able to wedge in there comfortably and still be able to reach the wheel.

I like the large cockpit table, which provides a sturdy foot brace when heeled and sitting on the cockpit bench. It has an integral fridge and, best of all, room enough to house an easily-accessible liferaft beneath.

There are no bench lockers, the space instead used for headroom below. So deck stowage is all in the ends, in a deep sail locker and quarter lockers. The latter will not suit larger items as they contain unprotected steering gear and electronics. The finish in these aft lockers looks poor, featuring bare plywood and liberal amounts of glue.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

Where centimetres count

The layout below decks is understandably similar to the successful Oceanis 45. “We looked at where we could gain space everywhere with the new hull shape,” said Bercault as we descended the 45º companionway to escape the torrential rain.

So although the 46.1 is only 10cm longer than the 45 and has the same beam, its maximum beam is carried further forward and higher up, to increase the internal volume.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The chine gives us 0.5m more beam,” Bercault explained. That beam gained above the waterline allows for the saloon berths to be pushed out 15cm each side compared with its predecessor, which buys valuable room. However, it’s up forward where you really notice the difference. The full bow sections allowed Beneteau to take the forward cabin of the Oceanis 48 and drop it into this 46.1, which tells you something about the volume.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

This owner’s cabin is astonishing for the yacht’s length, including an island double berth on which you can comfortably sleep with your head forward. The use of separate shower and heads compartments works very well, further emphasising the sense of space in the cabin. It also makes for a straightforward conversion into two ensuite cabins for the charter version.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

The extra space is also felt in the saloon and galley. I like the addition of an inboard worktop section in the galley, for example, which gives more serving space and a bracing position for when working at heel.

Within the multiple layout options, including three to five cabins with two to four heads, there is also the choice of a longitudinal galley with navstation to starboard.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

I like the light Nauta styling, which brings smart elements learned from the Oceanis Yachts 62, such as the bookcases built into the central bulkhead, the fabric linings and the indirect lighting. The brushed light oak veneer means no shortage of beige, but, together, with the huge hull portlights, this works well to keep the interior light and bright.

Quite why Beneteau goes to these styling lengths but won’t stretch to fitting rubber gaskets on the sole boards I fail to comprehend, however. Can you imagine walking around a prospective new house with each footstep being announced by a loud creaking? It feels like some sort of pantomime horror scene.

Stowage and tankage is moderate and in keeping with a yacht designed for coastal sailing and family holidays. By this I mean that the Oceanis 46.1 is an ideal yacht for cruising or chartering in the Med for a couple of weeks, rather than a design to suit long distance sailing or lengthy spells aboard.

It’s rare to have the opportunity to sail a new production yacht in a variety of conditions and with different options, and to be able to really push the boat. It is perhaps just as uncommon to see it perform so consistently in all conditions. While its builders will be acutely aware how important the design, styling and accommodation space is to maintain a healthy order book, the designer of the 46.1 clearly knows that the fundamental aspect of success is sound sailing qualities.

oceanis yacht 62 top speed

With their latest full bow designs, both Beneteau and Jeanneau have added a new dimension in volume for cruising yachts, particularly with their enormous forward cabins. The Oceanis 46.1 takes all the best bits of the excellent 45 and makes them slightly better. The overall impression is of just how much deck space and internal volume you get inside 45 (and a bit) feet.

If the finish quality matched the design this would be a very difficult boat to beat. Even so, the Oceanis 46.1 has raised the bar significantly in the highly competitive melting pot of midsize family cruisers, in terms of both looks and performance. And I wager that it will go on to be as successful, if not more so, than the 45.
