Wooden Toy Sailboat - 18 inch: T18 Racing Sloop

Our fastest and finest Wooden Toy Sailboat, the 18-inch T18 Racing Sloop is one of the most popular designs with over 17,000 of these beautiful Tippecanoe boats sailing around the world. The T18 sails beautifully in any size water from a swimming pool to the open seas. In a good breeze this toy sailboat will sail straight across a mile-wide lake in just under half an hour! Sail farther out in open water than any of the other toy boats on a light line, such as a Boat Reel or fishing rod, or set the rudder hard over to sail in circles.

Each T18 Racing Sloop comes with numbered Ship’s Papers signed by Master Boat Builder and Designer, Will Lesh. All parts of this toy sailboat are made from the finest materials: the fittings are solid brass, the hulls are made of solid Western Red Cedar, the sails are nylon spinnaker cloth, and the keel is stainless steel with a zinc ballast casting. With almost half of the weight of the boat in the keel casting, the T18 is completely self-righting. This beautiful boat has the power to sail in anything from the lightest breeze up to winds gusting 25 miles per hour. Whether gracefully sailing or elegantly displayed, this fine sailboat will become more and more treasured as it accumulates wonderful memories of fun and exciting times shared with the whole family.

The T18 Racing Sloop is available as both a kit or a finished boat. Finished boats are beautifully varnished with many coats of high-quality marine varnish to last for years of fun and come fully assembled and ready to sail.

Kits are easily assembled in about 1 hour and can be painted or varnished for extra beauty and longevity. Your T18 kit includes all of the parts and instructions to build a wonderful sailboat. All you will need is paint or varnish if you choose to finish the hull, but even without paint or varnish the western red cedar hull will last for many years.

The T18 is a fun building project to complete either by yourself or with someone special. Building and sailing this beautiful boat is a great introduction to a lifetime of enjoying the wonderful sport of sailing!

Wooden toys from russia.

Russian children’s toys have been made in the village of Bogorodskoe (near Moscow) for over 600 years. A great piece of folk art, and a mesmerizing toy, each one was handmade using traditions passed down through time. And in a time when technology runs rampant, and your kids understand more about your computer than you do, and video games are blurring the lines between reality and entertainment, the idea of a of a tactile, simple, wooden toy only becomes more charming.

Location of Bogorodskoye District on a map of Moscow

Origin of These Russian Toys

Tales of their origin populate the folk lore of Russian history, we have heard of tales of children constantly destroying their cloth toys, over and over, until their father finally crafted a wooden toy, the children did not destroy it, but they eventually grew bored, since it did not have the potential for movement that their former cloth toys had. So the father attached joints to the toys, with a string weighted with a small wooden ball attached to the joints. A swinging circular motion would bring the formerly stiff toys to life, and the children were mesmerized. Now back to their modern day application, we don’t mean to bad mouth technology, it has given us a plethora of advances, and luxuries few would’ve thought possible only a hundred years ago, but there is something to be said for the simple charm of these wooden children toys.

Why Folk Toys are Great for Children Today

The imagination of a child is a wonderful thing, the creativity they exude is astonishing, and the application of said creativity into the world is said to greatly advance critical thinking, and problem solving skills in young ones. Nowadays toys are unnecessarily complex, and provide instant gratification. If a child wishes to play with a toy, it simply follows the pre-ordained instructions, and is entertained. Press a button, the toy makes a sound, hit a switch the toy lights up, there are a pre-set series of rules to achieve a desired action. Part of the joy of being a child is in the endless curiosity that comes with that stage of life. Just count how many times your child asks, "Why?" and you’ll find this statement affirmed. With these wooden toys the question "Why?" is part of the fun. Why does the bears arm move this way? What happens if I swing the toy this way? What would happen if there was no weight attached to the strings? All of these questions build up the critical problem solving skills that so many modern toys ignore. The tactile nature of these toys allows each of these questions to have an answer, which a young mind can figure out. Just as the creation of the toys taught peasant children in Bogorodskoe some basic laws of physics, so can playing with them, and wondering how they work. The simple nature of these toys allow children to figure out how the toy works for themselves, and who knows, they might inspire a young girl or boy to take an interest in engineering, or physics? Or they might just be entertained by a bear playing a guitar, because after all, who doesn’t love a bear playing a guitar?

Popular Motifs in Russian Folk Toys

You’ll notice that the bear is an a popular motif in some of our kids toys, and that’s no accident. The bear is an important animal in Russian culture, and have a long fabled history. The Russian fairy tale Morozko features a character Ivan, who thinks he is above nature, and the bears, and tries to kill a mother bear, and her cubs. The punishment Ivan received is to have his head turn into that of a bear’s! The personality of a bear in old Russian folk tales is also said to be the closer to that of a human than any other animal. There is a common theme that humans are a part of nature, and not a controller of it presented in Russian tales regarding bears. These toys also exemplify that aspect of Russian folk lore you’ll notice bears using computers, bears on picnics, and other human actions being performed by the bear!

Another common theme is that of peasantry, the woman feeding the chickens is a common Russian toy to find. When the soviets took over Russia in 1917, they condoned and supported the spread of Russian folk toys such as these. The showed off the charm, and glorified that of the peasant lifestyle. The colorful Pecking Hen toys provide a nice contrast to the natural colored Bear toys.

Both of these toys work great as simple entertainment, or as a charming piece of cultural heritage. So even though they are sure to peak the interest of children, these toys are perfect splash of playfulness for any home decor.

Take a look at these toys in action!

LEGO IDEAS Set 40487: Sailboat Adventure

I invite you all to hop on board and come on a sailboat adventure with me as I review the latest LEGO Gift With Purchase (GWP), Set 40487.

I was provided this set to review by LEGO via Brickcentral but all opinions here are my own. The set is available from August 1st in LEGO Stores or at LEGO.com when spending over €200/$200/£200 and while stocks last. Stick around beyond the end of the review for some bonus shots too.

Learn the ropes – What’s in the box

The set contains 330 pieces. They are used to build a sailing boat on a small base, two minifigures, and a stand for the two included dolphins. It’s important to note that the Sailboat Adventure set is based on a design by my Brickcentral teammate @yc_solo . He submitted this boat build as a LEGO IDEAS competition entry… and won! The prize? His submission was converted into this real set.

Running a tight ship – Meet the crew

The instructions included in the set include words from YC_Solo explaining some of the sentiment and meaning in his set, one of the things revealed there is that the figures in the set represent him and his wife.

The male figure is the most noteworthy thanks to his new torso print. Though both figures look suitably nautical thanks to their sailers’ neckerchiefs and blue and white stripes. The male figure gets a pair of binoculars for looking out to sea while both crew members get a life vest to make sure they are nice and safe.

There are also two dolphins on a simple build using window panels to raise them up. It’s surprising to get two dolphins in the set, LEGO tends to include the bare minimum of animals so getting a pair feels a little deluxe.

Rock the boat – About the build

What of the main build? Not much has changed from the original IDEAS submission from what I can see.

Some additional gold parts used as a railing and for other details around the edge of the boat replace some original part usage. Again, these features give this set a nice prestigious feel. The only stickers in the set are those used to place the name of the vessel on its hull.

Building the set was certainly interesting. The boat is built on a couple of plates with some clear parts to give an impression of water. It’s a supporting part of the structure so cannot be easily removed. I hid it with a simulated ocean in most of my shots, but it does add something to the display value of the set. I found the sail to be a little frustrating to build, but it looks good once built and it is sturdier than I thought it was going to be during the build process.

The deck has several printed wooden planks and a small cabin. The cabin itself looks very nice but it’s not quite big enough to fit figures in, though you can pose one in the doorway.

There is a little space up front where minifigs can be positioned but the best position for them is at the rear with the tiller or on the two studs on the starboard side of the cabin.

A shot across the bows – BTS

I’ve never really had to simulate water in much of my photography but with this set, there really is no choice. I decided to keep things relatively dry and use blue cellophane. I also just used a bit of blue card for the backdrop. That’s probably the thing I’m least happy with in these photos.

For the night photos I simply switched to black. I also used some techniques for shooting rainfall that I picked up from @fourbrickstall

In some photos, I also used some cotton wool to simulate disturbed water, a facial mister, and water spray for additional water and atmosphere. I knew I also wanted to show @yc_solo using his binoculars so I made a crude cut out from cardboard to try and get that effect in-camera.

Sink or Swim – Final Thoughts

The Sailboat Adventure feels more premium than many GWP sets. This is down to everything from the exclusive torso, inclusion of two dolphins, gold lacquered parts to the fact it comes in a proper LEGO box, not the thin cardboard that GWP often comes in, and a proper IDEAS instruction book with a foreword by the designer. On top of that, there’s only one pair of stickers, those used for the name of the boat.

It’s a great-looking design that stays very faithful to the original submission and looks good on the shelf. The one criticism I can level at this build is that the ship does not easily remove from its stand and it’s probably not quite sturdy enough to be played with heavily. But I think most people will be using this in a more ornamental fashion.

My main gripe however is the required spend. It’s hard to criticize any “free” set for price but the main incentive to buy from LEGO is their gifts and loyalty points. This one requires a much bigger outlay than many previous GWP sets which will render it out of reach for some who may really want it.

It’s most likely this will end up in the hands of Star Wars collectors since there is a big new UCS release at the same time which will qualify you for this. (There’s a notable irony here for anyone that knows YC_Solo).

Ignoring the qualifying spend, this is a very good-looking display set with some nice parts. It’s also a bit different from other recent LEGO sets which adds to its appeal. Anyone who gets this set will find it really is shipshape.

In deep water – Bonus shots

With the review out of the way I told YC_solo I was going to have some fun with his included minifigure representation. So here are some bonus pictures for your enjoyment.

“Stop buying LEGO!” Indeed. LOL

I really love how you did the water and those rain shots are fantastic!

The cabin is indeed cramped, you can fit one minifigure in seated or sleeping position. The inside was slightly modified from my version, mine was white and smoother with some SNOT techniques in the central part of the hull but it was definitely more fragile. The front was also slightly modified (I had the front going out at an angle and parts to allow it, which didn’t help stability) but the back is a close 1-to-1 match.

BTW the ship can stand without the baseplate, unless you rotate the sail and it capsize. 😉 My version was even worse (because of the SNOT parts), it was resting on a smaller footprint.

Funnily I did have a version prior to submission where I had a the ship mounted on a baseplate but removed it because it exceeded the allowed 250 parts (the TLG designer “cheated” and added 80 parts to the set, and because the palm tree was removed, almost 90 more for the boat itself.)

So a hint for those who think the price tag is too high: it’s not my fault, TLG did that! LOL

Thanks so much again for the great review and amazing pictures! 🙂

Its possible I was nit-picking because I did not want to seem totally biased! I did try and fit a figure in the cabin and failed when I thought one should be able to lie in there. Also, I assumed it couldn’t be removed from the base just because of the way it was built, apologies for not putting that to the test. Again with the Price point, I get it. LEGO isn’t a charity and this is a set with 330 pieces it would be £$25-35 if they actually released it. So its fine. But many people do not spend £200 in one go, so the real shame is that the set cannot just be purchased 🙂

Its great though, and I am glad you liked the pics!

Name:  Sailboat Adventures Set Number:  40487 Pieces : 330 Price:  N/A (Gift with Purchase from LEGO.com) Exclusive to:  LEGO Brand Retail Stores, LEGO.com Theme:  Promotional, Ideas Release Date:  1 August 2021 Purchase Threshold: US$200 / £200 / AU$279

lego sailboat set

Firstly, I love the box and instruction manual design. It rejects the bleak all-black Ideas box design we’ve come to expect, and instead boasts a postcard-worthy illustrated background of the Sailboat over open waters, with the sun setting over the horizon.

I also don’t know why – but I really like the aesthetics of these square-ish instruction booklets. Over on the inside is a lovely profile of the competition winner – Yan Chevalier, and the story behind his contest submission and original design.

Yan is an accomplished toy photographer, and you can check out his amazing work over on Instagram @yc_solo .

lego sailboat set

The set comes with 2 minifigures, which I like to imagine are LEGO personifications of yc_solo and his wife – the hairstyle and good-natured expression absolutely line up.

lego sailboat set

Under their orange lifejackets are 2 delightfully appropriate nautical outfits. Are you even allowed on a sailboat or yacht if you’re not wearing stripes?

The male Sailor’s torso is new I think as I’ve not come across that particular design before, and I love that he has a navy neckerchief printed on it as well. I certainly hope we see more of this torso in future sets.

lego sailboat set

Here’s a look at the detailed back printing, which really allows you to appreciate the sailor’s neckerchief! I have to say, safety aside, both these minifigures look way better without their lifejackets.

lego sailboat set

You get 2 dolphins in the set. If they look familiar, it’s because these sand blue versions are identical to the one from Series 21’s Paddle Surfer .

lego sailboat set

Both dolphins are attached to a large round plate, and the way they’re posed really create a sense of movement, as they leap out of the water at different heights, with a dramatic splash of water in their wake, thanks to the crystals and transparent elements.

This mini-diorama works really well here.

lego sailboat set

Here’s a look at the completed Sailboat – which is impressively tall at 26cm high thanks to the large white sails. I’m not a boat person and have never been on a yacht, so this isn’t something I relate to, but I really appreciate just how clean and pleasing the design is.

The colours in particular are pleasing to the eye – with earth-tones like dark tan punctuated by pops of pearl and drum-lacquered gold, followed by the sharp contrasts of the white sails and black beams.

lego sailboat set

I really like the cabin, which is a little small but remains in-scale with the entire model. It exudes luxury, with the smooth stud-less exterior, and gentle curves as well as the pearl gold portholes.

lego sailboat set

The cabin’s exterior can be easily removed, revealing a small plank for a bed and comfortable sleeps one.

lego sailboat set

You can also pose the minifig emerging from the cabin entrance!

lego sailboat set

The Sailboat is perched on some plates for a sense of stability, and it has transparent cheese slopes to give the impression of waves created as the sailboat cruises along the ocean, and there’s an anchor hanging out the side as well.

If you’d like less of a “sailboat on a water-look”, you could swap the plates out for a more traditional black display stand to make it look more like a model sailboat that you can decorate your desk with.

lego sailboat set

The boat is named Éloïse, after Yan’s daughter and the detail is brought to life with stickers on both the starboard and port side of the yacht.

The shape of the sailboat’s bow is greatly enhanced by the use of these dark tan shells which give it a realistic shape.

lego sailboat set

The Sailboat has two rather large forward pulpits (?), which protrude out the front. I found these to be quite clumsy, and kept knocking them out of place when moving the sailboat around.

lego sailboat set

The sails are seriously big, and really steal most of the sailboat’s thunder thanks to just how much space it takes up. I really enjoyed the fact that these were entirely brick-built, cobbled together by a number of white bricks and slopes to create a very classic sailboat sail shape.

lego sailboat set

I don’t know if I was unlucky, but I found that there were several white bricks that looked to have discoloured, or oxidised – especially the large slopes on the right. When placed against the other stark white bricks, the discolouration is evident if you stare at it hard enough.

lego sailboat set

Last but not least – for an extra dash of luxury, I also really liked the generous use of these wood-print tiles scattered across the yacht. They really class it up, and gives it a pleasing organic and natural look.

lego sailboat set

What I liked:

  • One of the best GWPs that LEGO have ever produced
  • A unique and engaging build
  • Sailboat has great display presence
  • Nice selection of minifigures and 2 dolphins

What I didn’t like:

  • Discoloured white bricks
  • The forward pulpits and some other parts are a little fiddly
  • Purchase threshold is a little high

FINAL THOUGHTS :

LEGO have (pardon the pun), blown this one out of the water, and is a truly fine LEGO Ideas gift-with-purchase set. The fact that LEGO did not have to deviate much from yc_solo’s contest submission, just speaks to how well crafted the Sailboat Adventures set is.

Like the Vintage Car GWP from earlier in the year, this set exudes a certain sense of carefree adventure, and reminds me of when travel was still possible, and we could dream about sailing of into the sunset on a stupidly expensive rental yacht.

There aren’t many particularly glaring flaws with 40487 Sailboat Adventures – there are lots of minor niggles, like discoloured bricks, and fiddly bits, but for a “free set”, it really sets the bar really high on what can be expected from a LEGO gift with purchase.

The purchase threshold was disappointingly high, which does run the risk of pricing out those that don’t have a ton of disposable income, or have nothing on your list that screams “buy now!”, but for 330 pieces, you are getting a really substantial set, that would otherwise retail for US$30-$50 dollars easily – plus it’s free if you were already planning to purchase something. Thankfully, August 2021 had plenty of new releases, so I imagine the calculus not being too challenging here.

lego sailboat set

This is a superb display piece, sized rightly and with proportions and a sense of size that is more than the sum of its 330-pieces, and will appeal to a broad spectrum of LEGO fans.

If you’re on the fence about the 40487 Sailboat Adventures, I highly recommend taking the plunge, as this is a particularly memorable and special set that will only be available for a short time.

Rating   and score: 4/5  ★★★★✰

Build [4]  – A quick build with lots of interesting techniques, including the sails Real Value [5]  – A value-packed set, especially since it’s essentially “free” Innovation [4]  – A sensational model at this particular scale thanks to the brick-built sails Coolness [4]  – Yachts are reserved for the super-rich, so I’d say this makes the set cool Keepability [5]  – Ideas set. Limited-time GWP. This set is a prime collector’s model.

40487 Sailboat Adventures  will be available as a Gift with Purchase from  LEGO.com , from 1-29 August (while stocks last) when you spend  US$200 / £200 / AU$279 online.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed this really quick review of the the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventures set, and a massive congratulations to Yans Chevalier and his family for this outstanding achievement.

I’ll leave you with my interpretation of a “Sailboat Adventure”.
