mangusta oceano 39

A closer look at a sporty favourite and a world premiere in this year's Cannes lineup

The countdown to the Cannes Yachting Festival draws ever closer and, with it, the highly anticipated lineup of yachts making their debut has started trickling in. Mangusta Yachts , an Overmarine Group brand, is no exception to this fizz of excitement.

With its more than 600 expert employees and 10 manufacturing sites across Italy – including the recent expansion of its Pisa site – the brand is primed to create the perfect vessel for every client, designing its hulls and interiors together with the owner.

As a specialist in the 30- to 50-metre fast composite yachts segment, the yard effectively responds to clients' requests. It has conceived three lines informed by different ways of enjoying life at sea: Maxi Open REV, Mangusta Oceano and Mangusta GranSport.

The most traditional line is the Maxi Open line. With its top performances and cutting-edge technology, it boasts uncompromised comfort and has consequently become a classic Mediterranean yacht.

Meanwhile, the Mangusta Oceano, ranging between 39 and 60 metres, is a line of long-range displacement vessels and enjoys a range normally found on explorer vessels. As its name suggests, the Mangusta GranSport line is centred on the "fast displacement" naval platform and includes fast displacement yachts between 33 and 67 metres.

Luckily, for those wanting to see the yacht lines up close, Mangusta will be exhibiting two of these models during the Cannes Yachting Festival. BOAT unpacks their defining features.

Mangusta GranSport 33

The ninth unit in the Gransport 33, the entry-level of the line, will be on display during the boat show and demonstrates generous volumes, constant visual contact with the sea, spacious outdoor areas and an impressive maximum speed.

Hailing from the fast-displacement line, the 33-metre is the result of a collaboration between designer Alberto Mancini and Overmarine Group's technical departments. With cruising in comfort a key focus, the yacht boasts large volumes comparable to those found on larger yachts. Accommodation includes a 40-square-metre master stateroom with large windows on the main deck, as well as four guest cabins on the lower deck.

Further highlights arrive in the form of large entertainment and relaxation spaces for guests. There is an impressive 56-square-metre sundeck, carefully curated to include a large lounge, sunbathing area and Jacuzzi pool.

Meanwhile, the garage of this particular unit houses a tender and one jet ski. The extendible aft platform invites guests to have the closest possible contact with the sea thanks to a fully equipped beach club fitted with a ladder and a shower.

Powered by four Volvo Penta 1000 HP engines, the yacht is capable of hitting an impressive top speed of 25 knots and is coupled with four IPS POD drives to enhance efficiency and manoeuvrability.

Mangusta Oceano 39

On display as a worldwide premiere, the Mangusta Oceano 39 was developed and engineered by the yard's engineering department, Alberto Mancini and design firm Studio Verme. Again, the three-deck yacht is the entry-level of the Mangusta Oceano long-range displacement line and endows her entire category with a very strong identity.

Centring on design and technology, she epitomises the philosophy of a "seamless lifestyle" at sea, revolving around the pure pleasure of cruising. In terms of design, the all-glass gunwales on the upper deck and large floor-to-ceiling glazed surfaces found on the main and upper decks afford the yacht a minimal look, creating a flow between exterior and interior spaces.

The 39-metre's minimal superstructure and extensive use of glass are not the only highlights. Guests will be enticed by the patio villa-like aesthetic located on the upper deck, brought to fruition through the glass surfaces and side floor-to-ceiling windows, one of which can be fully opened. The aft door also opens fully to create a smooth, free-flowing continuum between exteriors and interiors.

Fitted with a pair of MTU 1700 HP long-range engines, the Mangusta Oceano 39 can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots, and a range of 2,250 nautical miles.

For more information on Mangusta's product lines, contact the team at Mangusta Yachts today .

Get Ready to Set Sail: The Cannes Yachting Festival Returns

By Sophia Spanton

The Cannes Yachting Festival is a feast for the senses. The sparkling water, the gleaming yachts, the sumptuous food and drink; it's a sensory overload in the best possible way. If you're looking for a truly unforgettable experience, this is it. The Cannes Yachting Festival is a great opportunity for people who are interested in yachts to learn more about them and to see some of the most beautiful and innovative boats in the world, while basking in the French Riviera's sunlight.

Annually, the Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes, France, host the Cannes Yachting Festival. This year's event, which will take place from the 12th to the 17th of September, is set to, yet again, showcase more than 650 boats, ranging from modest day cruisers to astronomical superyachts. The renowned event draws nearly 55,000 expected visitors annually: yacht builders, designers, and those who are fans from across the globe. There are many events and activities associated with the festival, including cocktail parties, yacht races, and seminars, making it a fantastic place to learn about the most recent trends and advances in the yachting sector.

Organised by Reed Expositions France, the monumental Cannes Yachting Festival is held annually across the Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes, France. In addition to the yachts on display, there are also a variety of exhibitors showcasing products and services related to the yachting industry, such as engines, navigation equipment, and luxury accessories offering a great opportunity for several industries to network and collaborate.Visitors can purchase tickets online or at the festival, and there are discounts available for students, children, and groups. The Cannes Yachting Festival is a must-see event for anyone who loves yachts and the yachting lifestyle.

The main port for the yearly festival is the Vieux Port. Located in the heart of Cannes, this is where you'll find the majority of the exhibitors and the yachts on display. The Vieux Port is a beautiful location, with stunning views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills. There are also a variety of restaurants and bars in the area, so visitors can enjoy a meal or a drink while taking in the sights.

Port Pierre Canto is located just outside of the centre of Cannes, and is a smaller port that's primarily used for the larger yachts. This is where you'll find the superyachts and other large vessels, and it's a great place to see some of the most impressive boats in the world. There are also some exhibitors and events at Port Pierre Canto, but the majority of the festival takes place at the Vieux Port.

A significant new aspect of the 2023 event is the construction of a floating space in the Vieux Port, which will accommodate smaller boats, in response to requests from various exhibitors. Director of the Yachting Festival, Sylvie Ernoult commented, ‘This new edition will highlight the small units with the creation of a brand new area, a marina in the heart of the Vieux Port, which will accommodate more than fifty small motor boats from 8 to 12 metres’ .

In addition to all it has to offer, the Cannes Yachting Festival has a long and rich history. The festival was first held in 1977, and it was originally called the Festival International de la Plaisance d'Antibes. In 1978, the festival moved to Cannes, and it was renamed the Festival International de la Plaisance de Cannes, quickly becoming one of the most important events in the yachting industry, and attracting yacht builders, designers, and enthusiasts from all over the world.

Over the years, the festival has grown and evolved, and it now features hundreds of yachts, ranging from small day boats to massive superyachts. Undoubtedly, the Cannes Yachting Festival offers the chance to see some of the most beautiful and innovative yachts in the world, and to meet with the builders and designers who create them; it is the perfect place to see and be seen, just make sure you bring your sea legs and your fanciest nautical outfit.

Whether you're a yacht enthusiast or just someone who appreciates the beauty of these incredible boats, this year's 2023 edition is definitely worth a visit.

Saxdor Yachts to debut the Saxdor 340 GTWA at Cannes Yachting Festival 2024

Saxdor-340-GTWA_exterior-render-5

26 August 2024

Saxdor Yachts, the innovative Finnish yacht manufacturer, is thrilled to announce its participation in the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024, where it will unveil the world premiere of the Saxdor 340 GTWA. This highly anticipated new model marks a significant addition to Saxdor’s expanding range, bringing advanced design and unprecedented versatility to the sports boat category.

The Saxdor 340 GTWA is set to make a striking debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, showcasing the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of yacht design. Initially announced as the 320 GTWA at boot Düsseldorf, the model has evolved beyond expectations, now offering 34 feet of innovative features and functionality. The 340 GTWA is Saxdor’s first wheelhouse walkaround model, distinguished by its unique large side terraces—an exceptional feature for a boat of this size that truly sets this model apart in its category.

Designed with Saxdor’s consistent focus on performance, safety, and comfort, the Saxdor 340 GTWA offers a spacious bow area that can comfortably seat 5-6 people and be transformed into a sunbed. The helm station, which can be equipped with twin 12″ plotters, features a sliding door for easy access and an optional three-person sofa, providing a social context for driving with excellent ergonomics and visibility. The sofa can be rotated 180 degrees to complete the seating arrangement around the dinette, surrounded by large glass sliding doors and an opening roof that create a bright and inviting space in seamless connection with the outdoor environment. Below deck, the 340 GTWA includes a generous forward double cabin with ample natural light, and a separate toilet, accommodating extended getaways as well as day trips. An optional aft cabin with access under the aft seating can also accommodate two people.

Following the success of the 200, 270, 320 and 400 models, the 340 GTWA is positioned as a keystone in Saxdor’s lineup, offering a long-awaited balance of size and functionality, always with excellent value. With its light yet strong hull, crafted using the brand’s signature vacuum infusion technology, the 340 GTWA promises fuel efficiency, ease of handling, and exceptional performance on the water.

In addition to the world premiere of the Saxdor 340 GTWA, Saxdor Yachts will showcase its impressive lineup at CYF 2024, including the 400 GTC, 320 GTO, 270 GTO, and the Saxdor 200. Each of these models embodies the brand’s dedication to delivering a superior boating experience through thoughtful design, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on customer satisfaction.

Saxdor Yachts will be at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 from September 10th to 15th at stand POWER 127 (Port Canto)

Since 1977, the Yachting Festival has been recognized as the official kickoff of the yachting season. Every September, yacht and powerboat manufacturers like Prestige and Jeanneau use the opportunity to debut their latest models to the world in this elegant setting.

This year, the Cannes Yachting Festival will take place from September 7th to 12th at the Vieux Port & Port Canto Cannes, France; and the exhibitions will be open every day from 10:00 a.m.

From Tuesday to Thursday, the exhibition doors will close at 7:00 p.m. As well as Saturday, September 11th.

On Friday, September 10, the event will remain open until 10:00 p.m., and on Sunday the festival will come to an end closing its doors at 6:00 p.m.

There are two exhibit areas for this event: Vieux Port and Port Canto.

Port Canto will host sailboats, as well as the brokerage area for pre-owned yachts. And Vieux Port is the dedicated area for motor yachts and the site for luxury galleries and art of living.

Cannes' Vieux Port is one of the oldest harbors on the French Riviera. It enjoys a privileged place in the heart of the city of Cannes at the edge of an idyllic seafront and at the foot of Le Suquet hill.

This year, the Vieux Port will host 450 prestigious new motorboats ranging from 3 to 45 meters in-water in length, presented by the world’s leading shipyards and featuring many new products.

Vieux Port is also the setting of the Luxury Gallery, an area dedicated to luxury and the art of living.

On the other side of the Croisette, the Port Canto is the setting of the Sailing Area which will bring 108 new boats ranging from 10 to 35 meters in length, both monohull, and multihull, with 20 global launches. These boats are exhibited in-water facing the stands of the shipyards, equipment manufacturers, and service companies. This large area is entirely dedicated to sailing.

Also in Port Canto, you will find the Brokerage Area with exhibitions of 50 or more second-hand boats over 22 meters in length.

InterMarine will be visiting this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, and we would like to invite you to join us during this show.

The Cannes port in the heart of the city welcomes you to the sun-drenched coast of the Côte d’Azur.

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 10:34 am.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Get top local stories in Philly delivered to you every morning. Sign up for NBC Philadelphia's News Headlines newsletter.

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

ICE YACHTS: at the Cannes Yachting Festival with two out-of-the-ordinary sailing yachts

  • Luca D'Ambrosio
  • August 22, 2024

The upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival will be an extraordinary event for ICE YACHTS, once again showcasing the tremendous energy with which this shipyard is progressively capturing an increasingly wide audience.

In fact, there will be two world premieres on display: the ICE 66 RS and the ICE 53 ST, two exceptional sailing yachts that are arriving at the most important boat show of the season with features that calling innovative would be an understatement, and which we had the pleasure of testing in advance.

But let’s proceed in order and discover together why these ICE YACHTS vessels are so interesting.

ICE YACHTS – ICE 66 rs

This sailing yacht marks the beginning of ICE YACHTS’ collaboration with an extraordinary team. The naval architecture and hull lines were masterfully created by Farr Yacht Design, while the incomparable beauty of the interior and exterior design is the work of the brilliant Lucio Micheletti, who, as you will see, has designed something truly unique.

“It was the first, but it certainly won’t be the last project we entrust to this amazing team – said Marco Malgara, president of ICE YACHTS – We believe that the new ICE 66 RS will soon account for about a third of our revenues, thanks also to the growth of sales in North American markets”.

ICE-YACHTS-ICE-66-rs

“ICE 66 RS is a luxurious vessel, characterized by an interior design dedicated to the most refined tastes – commented Ingrid Maria Torres, creative director of ICE YACHTS – This new creation of ours satisfies those who are not content with excellence in technique and performance but also seek the utmost in furnishings and finishes”.

LINK TO THE ICE 66 RS SEA TRIAL

ICE 66 rs salon

A miracle that ICE YACHTS has made possible thanks to a transformation kit that allows the yacht to switch from a racing configuration to a cruising one in just a few hours . This is done by replacing the floorboards, cabin doors, kitchen, saloon table, cushions, and mattresses. The entire kit fits in a small van (or the marina’s garage), making it easy to switch from the luxurious (and heavier) materials of the cruising version to the lightweight materials of the racing version, remarkably keeping the weight of this 16-meter yacht to just 10 tons.

ICE YACHTS has built the new 53 ST entirely from carbon, using quadraxial and unidirectional fibers, a technique that involves a three-step infusion of epoxy resin, laminated over a closed-cell PVC core.

Festival of Arts artists dress to express in runway fashion show

Lucy Landherr models a dress down the runway by artist Nancy Swan.

Nancy Swan knew what time of year it was, and perhaps more importantly, she knew the year.

The painter, a veteran of the Festival of Arts runway fashion show, was in a fever pitch, especially with the Pageant of the Masters running a fashion-oriented show concurrently inside the Irvine Bowl in Laguna Beach.

One of her granddaughters had expressed a desire to be her model again. Swan wanted the bonding experience, but a family vacation that would have her return a day before the show was problematic.

Lucy Landherr, modeling a dress by artist Nancy Swan, interacts with spectators after walking the runway.

“I planned on getting a head start, but as the weeks went by at the festival, I still hadn’t found another model,” Swan said. “My sister, who was looking out for me, said, ‘Oh, it’s too much stress. It takes a lot of work. Just don’t do it this year.’

“I thought, ‘Yeah, but this is the year of fashion. I want to do it, and I have this idea, and I want to see if it will work.’”

Inside a month before the dress had to be completed, her sister found her a model in Lucy Landherr, who was willing to make the commute from Chino Hills.

Lucy Landherr, modeling a dress by artist Nancy Swan, poses for pictures at the Festival of Arts runway fashion show.

Landherr walked the runway in a black-and-white dress framed with hand-cut lace created from newspaper on Aug. 18, when Swan’s design was named the Most Glamorous “Red Carpet” Worthy Creation.

The long skirt, which also earned the People’s Choice honor, was designed to depict fashion silhouettes from 1800 to the present. A headpiece featured stars, representing the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Swan shared the stage with her granddaughters and niece in a previous show, when she made four dresses for one entry. They posed as a wedding party, which included the roles of flower girl, a bridesmaid and a bride.

The Festival of Arts runway fashion show requires outfits to be made of recycled, reclaimed and repurposed materials.

“The little 6-year-old that was walking out there, she was the flower girl, and I had her lead off,” Swan said. “I gave her a whole set of instructions on what to do, and she had nothing to look at to see ahead of her — not like her sisters.

“I said, ‘This is what you have to do.’ She walked out, she did everything perfectly. She carried a basket of flowers made out of trash bags and all kinds of things like that, but I had embedded a bubble machine inside of it, so instead of throwing flower petals, this thing was just pumping out bubbles everywhere.”

Susan Davis, who recently retired as the special events director of the Festival of Arts, founded the runway fashion show in 2009. The first iteration took place without a runway but instead with a red carpet rolled out in the middle of the festival grounds.

Tomoka Nomura-Jarvis models a traditional Japanese court dress by artist Rowan Foley.

A showcase of the festival’s exhibitors and their talents, the contest has called upon those entering to create outfits from recycled, reclaimed and repurposed materials.

Glass artist Cody Nicely was doing much of his work in the final days leading up to the show. On Aug. 13, he accompanied resident Greg Viviani to the Laguna Beach City Council meeting, where the latter dumped trash collected from Aliso Beach in front of the dais to make a statement. Nicely said he had met Viviani while skimboarding.

After that bit of political theater, Nicely gathered the trash for his purposes, and it ended up on the tail of a mermaid costume worn by McKenna Michels.

The dress of artist Cody Nicely, modeled by McKenna Michels, during the Festival of Arts runway fashion show.

“I knew that it needed to stay together for three minutes,” Nicely said. “It ended up doing that and more. We built it in a way that it could stay together. … We used a lot of hot glue that we could count on. We had fishing wire, it was 30-pound test[ed], keeping everything together. All the sewing, we used fishing wire because we didn’t want any wardrobe malfunctions.”

Durability varied among the designs. Laguna Beach Arts Commissioner Pat Kollenda, who judged the contest, weighed in on the subject for the environmentally conscious mermaid.

“I do have to say one of the things that impressed me the most was the amazing way she kept it on,” Kollenda said. “I actually thought we might have one of those fashion faux pas, but nicely done.”

Judges admire the dress of artist Cody Nicely during the Festival of Arts runway fashion show.

Painter Elizabeth McGhee has caught the fashion bug, and she has caught on when it comes to catching the attention of the judges.

The three-judge panel, which also consisted of costume designer Shelley Komarov and local artist Gerard Stripling, recognized McGhee’s latest creation, a dress made out of socks, with the Most Innovative Use of Materials award.

McGhee, who likened the Festival of Arts to a “summer camp” for its artists, described the fashion show as one of the camp activities. She modeled the dress herself, not unlike her debut on the runway, when booth neighbors Janet Lewis and David Milton asked her to wear their dress during her first season as an exhibitor.

Artist Elizabeth McGhee models her own dress creation made from socks at the Festival of Arts runway fashion show.

The most recent show featured artists whose primary media included drawing, painting, glass, jewelry and printmaking. An opportunity to challenge oneself outside of their comfort zone has contributed to the interest of the exhibitors.

“I think it’s fun to see what the jewelers make or how their brains work,” McGhee said. “We’re all trying to make outfits, so it’s all clothing, but I think it’s different. If it was all fashion designers, it would almost have a different tone than when you see somebody do something that’s not in their wheelhouse, the creative turns they might take.”

In roughly a dozen years as a participant, McGhee said the sock dress was only the second she had sewn. Others had been held together with staples, duct tape and clear shipping tape.

Guests surround artist Elizabeth McGhee for a closer look at her dress creation at the Festival of Arts runway fashion show.

Artists have been known to help each other, McGhee added. The assistance manifests itself in helping some to find models, while others collect materials for the competitors.

“I’ve never felt it to be cut-throat,” McGhee said. “It’s a competition, but it’s a very friendly competition, so it doesn’t feel ick, and it does feel like a community.”

Printmaking artist Anne Moore’s dress, which was referred to as “Breakfast at Tea-fany’s” featured 312 tea bag covers, winning Most Creative Concept.

Judges admire the dress "Breakfast at Tea-fany's: The Art of High Tea" by artist Anne Moore on the runway.

In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the fashion show, a retrospective brought back memorable looks made by longtime participant Brad Elsberry. To model his denim design, Elsberry called upon Jeff Lam, who also wore his headpiece for the villainous Minotaur in the most recent Pageant of the Monsters in October.

“Miserably uncomfortable because the hooves are 10 inches high, and they each weigh like 4 pounds,” Elsberry recalled of the Minotaur. “The costume, I have no idea how much it weighs — probably 20 pounds [or] 30 pounds — and it’s all foam rubber, so it just holds in the heat, so you get drenched when you wear it.

“He didn’t believe me, and then the first night, he was like, ‘Yep.’ When he came in the second night to put it on, he was like, ‘Oh my god, it’s still wet.’”

Jess Bailon Alvarado walks onto the runway as she models a colorful ensemble by Brad Elsberry.

The event also included a look at a few costumes from the Pageant of the Masters show, “A La Mode: The Art of Fashion.”

Valair Williams reprised her role as the model for a tribute to the British design label Ossie Clark.

“This has been all summer, so this is really like a family,” Williams said. “The fact that I got to meet the director of the [Pageant of the Masters, Diane Challis Davy], beforehand, and she’s able to interact with us, it really feels like a home vibe.”
