“The Nano”: First Dedicated 3D RC Class

The International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) has released a set of international rules for a unique new class based on the emerging 3D Printing Technology. 

This new and exciting style of class is focused on expanding and promoting Radio Yachting to a much wider audience.

What is the point of the NANO class?

The advent of 3D printing fittings and other parts for rc boats raises the possibility of a class where the hulls and other parts are largely constructed by 3D printing and, probably, by the end user. Although this may well work in the existing RG65 and FOOTY classes, those class rules permit conventional moulded carbon fibre for the hull and deck structures and this confers a large weight/stiffness advantage to boats built using ‘hi tech’ methods

A new class rule devised specifically to cater for those who want to create their own boat, primarily by printing it themselves, would seem to be a logical step for the sport.

Such a class is an ideal one in which students of all ages can test their design and build skills. Perfect for craft, design and technology projects. The possibility of designing the boat on Friday and going racing on Saturday has become a reality.

Importantly the class raises the possibility of readily available low cost boats within an open class that is ideal for those starting the sport of rc sailing. You do not have to choose a one design with no freedom to experiment. 

Objectives of NANO class

• Sailors are quite likely to be able to design and build the majority of their own boat
• Hull and associated structural parts may only be made by 3D printing
• No hull/boat certification process
• No sail area measurement
• Event measurement only
• Draught/length ratio not so large that fin technology rules – 0.45 length maximum
• Tightly controlled rig size and number

Provisional class rules have been launched in May 2017. It is anticipated that feedback from users may assist with refinement of the class rules, if required, to help achieve the desired objectives.

I wanted to do a powerfull boat. My 3D Printer has 200mm Z height so i designed one boat with 400mm - two parts - for shallow water. Both designs can be screwed together so if you want to change something you only have to print one piece new.

There is a hull extension available if you want 100mm or more additional length.

Step 1: Boat Design

I made a boat fitting my 3D printer (Anycubic i3 Mega) and then i checked which is the biggest jet drive i can put in. It resulted in a 40mm jet which is really big for a boat of this size. But my opinion is you can only have to less power never to much!

By the different propeller designs - two, three or 4 blade you can adjust the thrust.

I wanted to do two hull designs. One for speedruns on flat lakes and one for wild river runs.

There is always a hull only part and a cut part to make the customized hole for the parts.

I used a 0.8mm nozzle on my printer for the big parts. All walls are made of a thickness multiplied by 0.8mm so it is easy to print and no issues with gaps or weak walls.

One piece takes around 10h to print with a layer height of 0.3mm.

The cover can be a 1mm thick plastic / plexi sheet just cut it for best fit.

Step 2: Print Instruction

i suggest to print one by one not both or all 3 parts together just in case something fails

Step 3: Jet System

Jet diameter - prop diameter is 40mm

at the motor side there is a sealed ball bearing which carries the thrust lod. In front of it there is a clamped sleeve to bring the force from the shaft to the bearing.

In the diffusor there is a brass bearing to keep the prop in the middle.

Drive Dog Shaft Clutch is clamped to the shaft and drives the prop.

Step 4: Bill of Material

if you have nothing it will be around 100€ :

Step 5: Assembly

To seal the hull i painted it with Epoxy. Before painting i use a long blade of a cutter to flatten the surface.

The faces between the prints i sealed by using double sided tape so that its possible to take it apart if necesarry.

To screw it together you just need some M3 screws and M3 inserts which you melt in - i use a soldering iron for this purpose.

Step 6: Electronics

I wanted to keep it simple an cheap but fast.

So i decided to use a 3670 motor which means diameter 36mm 70mm length - brushless.

The chosen motor has KV of 2650 which means per supplied Volt you get 2650 turns/min so if you go max and use a 6S (6cell) Li-Po battery you have 22.2V results in 58000rev/min - of course without load. For the beginning i will use only 3S - 29000rev/min.

All components are waterproof.

For the receiver i have chosen on with gyro - this should help too keep the boat in a straight line on speed runs.

Prepare Gcodes for your printer

To create the g-code, we recommend Simplify3D or Slic3r PE. Detail settings (like layer height or infill) of slicer are described in user guide.

What you need next to the printed parts?

Most of parts are printed, but not everything. For example: motor, battery, RC. These things aren’t possible to print. In user guide is the detailed list with these things which you have to buy.

All our models are carefully tested in real life! There are several prototypes that we check in detail to ensure the best possible performance. Until we are satisfied with the resulting model we will not publish it! Our models are created with love :)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Is the hull designed to be printed in vase mode.

Yes. Vase mode guarantees good layer adhesion and the best surface quality, and it reduces a lot the printing time.

What material do you recommend to print the Alioth files?

We recommend PLA+ or PLA.

PLA is stiff, has low shrinkage and is easy to print. The disadvantage is a low glass transition temperature.

Darker colours warp on direct sunlight as the temperature of the surface builds up fast. To avoid this, use bright clear colours.

Don’t leave printed parts in a car on hot summer days, as the temperature can easily rise above 50°C.

What sailwinch servos can I use?

Files include three different servo trays for:

• Standard size (40×20 mm) sailwinch servos, like Turnigy 6114.
• S100 sailwinch.
• RMG and ARS808 sailwinch servos.

What other parts do I need to complete my Alioth boat?
