The Bering 70 is the debut model for Bering’s Yachtship series. She Has been launched at the end of January 2019 and is available for immediate sale. Like all of Bering’s models she has been designed from the keel up to be a superb oceanic travel and ideal for extensive coastal cruising. Her hull shape and profile let you easily recognize that the Bering 70 is an atypical motor yacht that is incredibly stylish. A reverse-raked bow is seldom seen in yacht designs of this size. The absence of a large overhanging bow means that there is less reserve buoyancy to create lift when making contact with an approaching wave. This in turn leads to the hull “slicing” through waves as opposed to riding up and over, thereby dampening pitch at sea. The end result, a smoother ride for everyone on board.Similarly, her contemporary interior design is a departure from the more traditional styling found on many of today’s long distance motor yachts, but her capabilities are that of a true blue water traveler. Featuring a pilothouse deck, full displacement hull and a range of over 2,500 nautical miles she’s ready to carry you and your guests to far away destination.Bering 70-004’s quick summary is: steel hull, composite superstructure, three stateroom layout, Corian countertops, Seakeeper M16 Gyro Stabilizer, twin 305 HP Cummins engines, two 8 person life rafts, hydraulic crane,nav/com electronics package in the wheelhouse. She is a 24V boat with two Victron 5 KW inverter/chargers, 230 V, 50Hz, 63 amp shore power, 21.5 kW and 17.0 kW Onan generators.The Bering 70 is designed with a displacement of 140,000 pounds, carries over 1,260 gallons of fuel and can cruise for 2,500 miles.

BEYOND CAPRICORN for sale

Built by Bering Yachts to a design by Sabdes Yacht Design, the 23.95m BEYOND CAPRICORN is a true world cruiser and the only Bering 80 currently on the market.

There are very few yachts comparable to BEYOND CAPRICORN. Constructed in steel and delivered in 2017, this yacht’s powerful exterior profile is instantly recognisable. Her towering bow and sweeping sheer, combined with her forward-raking bridge, give BEYOND CAPRICORN a dynamic and progressive appearance as well as provide for exceptional seakeeping. The yacht is extremely well proportioned, with the pilothouse and Portuguese bridge providing the classic explorer look in addition to being very functional.

BEYOND CAPRICORN has accommodation for up to 11 guests in a flexible four or five cabin layout. The arrangement is presently configured for nine guests in four cabins, with a master suite, VIP double and two guest doubles – one of which has an additional Pullman bunk. The fifth cabin is located on the upper deck and currently in use by the captain, although BEYOND CAPRICORN has separate crew quarters for a complement of four.

Thanks to her wide beam, the internal space aboard BEYOND CAPRICORN is impressive. The head room is well above average, and the interior adopts a traditional yachting style with varnished wood panelling and cabinetry.

With a top speed of 12 knots and a range of over 6,000nm at her 9-knot cruising speed, BEYOND CAPRICORN is a true ‘pocket explorer’ that will enable an owner to cruise the world in comfort.

The yacht carries two tenders to aft on the upper deck, leaving the sun deck clear of operational equipment and given over to guest relaxation. The teak sun deck can be sheltered by a clear canvas surround, so it remains useable even in more inclement weather.

Listed for sale by her original owner, a full and detailed maintenance history is available. The boat was built on-spec by the yard and upon acquiring her, the owner set about a significant round of upgrades and enhancements. This is a top-spec yacht with low engine hours, and arguably the flagship Bering 80 with the yard subsequently having received orders for six more.

Describe IJE

The owner has a dream build team, one that has built several yachts. Each is a remarkable achievement and IJE, it's safe to say, tops them all. She is a tour de force and the longest Benetti ever built.

The briefest glance will tell you that the beautifully balanced exterior lines bear the distinctive signature of sought-after star studio RWD. The owner's team worked very closely with them to perfect the look of decks seeming to float one above the other.

Inside she has wonderfully informal beach-house style, airy, welcoming and restful, which is perfect for a family yacht. Another stamp of excellence is expert naval architecture by PierLuigi Ausonio.

Most appealing features?

In the main saloon the full-height glass walls can slide back to open the space up. The difference that makes is hard to explain but it completely changes the environment.

Sound becomes softer and you can hear the sea, the air and light change to make it a shaded outside space. The entire experience is so much more restful. It's a break-through piece of design.

The main deck aft has a good-sized pool, open-air dining, a bar, several different lounge areas including a TV lounge - everything families need to spend the day together. 

There's a fully equipped lower deck gym with one of the largest sea terraces I've seen on a yacht of this size, and opposite is the tender and toy garage, which is packed with the latest kit.

She has two 12m (40ft) tenders on the foredeck to take extended families ashore together. That longer length means they're faster, more comfortable, carry more people and equipment and have better range.

There are eleven cabins for 22 guests, including a private owner's deck with walkaround sidedecks and a bedroom suite with direct access to the foredeck helipad.

An elevator connects lower to bridge decks and there is corridor access from the lower deck lobby to the beach club so that all generations of the family can enjoy step-free time together.

There's a dedicated cinema, a very private nightclub complete with fully equipped bar, lighting and sound systems and DJ station, and a bridge deck games room with access to the aft deck's firepit lounge.

The main deck has a beauty treatment room and hair salon and a massage room equipped to double as a hospital. She has everything any family could want or need for extended cruising.

Need to know?

Right from the start, she was intended to be a world-cruising family yacht, one that could take the owner and their family cruising in any part of the world, places where the weather is not always reliable. To keep everyone on board comfortable, underway or at anchor, she has two sets of Naiad stabilisers.

In more and more locations anchoring is not allowed to protect reefs and seabeds so she has been fitted with a Rolls-Royce dynamic positioning system to hold position without having to anchor. 

Operating in the Mediterranean, yachts are generally well catered for and there are plenty of diversions ashore. When you get off the beaten track, which IJE was designed and built to be able to do, the infrastructure can become indifferent, distances greater, comfort and entertainment on board more important.

Bering 60 is the Winner at the Moscow Boat Show

Drawn to the lure of bluewater adventure via semi-custom steel and aluminum construction, countless clients visited the  Bering Yachts  booth placed in the Moscow Boat Show at Crocus Expo International Exhibition Center March 5 to 9, 2020.

Models of the Bering 130, Bering 106, and Bering 60 gave customers a view of the liveaboard experience and an understanding of the benefits of steel yachts for safety, durability, and comfort.

“We are grateful to our Moscow Boat Show clients for their interest and their ability to explain what qualities they seek in yacht construction,” said Bering Russia representative Vladimir Maslovsky. “Based on their feedback at the show we plan to upgrade the Bering 60 and retain it in our model line with upgrades in style, amenities, and materials.”

Vladimir Maslovsky and sales and marketing manager Elena Kanburoglu were on duty at the Bering booth. This was the second year Bering was onsite at the show. The event bills itself as offering something for “everybody who enjoys life at sea – boat owners, boat enthusiasts, families, fishermen, water lovers, and beginners.” Bering participated alongside companies including Prestige Yachts, Smart Yachts, Ultraboats, Velvette Marine, West Nautical, Mercury, M-Power, and Harman.

The Moscow Boat show is also a forum where buyers and sellers meet under one roof to conduct business and enhance industry knowledge.  It showcases innovative technology and advanced shipbuilding systems.

It is easy when looking at a globe of the earth, to become captivated by the narrow gap separating North America and Siberia.  At its narrowest point the Bering Strait is only 85 km across beckoning explorers to try crossing its icy waters.

Despite the fact that a ferry could potentially cross from the USA to Siberia in two hours, political hurdles restrict traffic across this body of water.  It is virtually impossible for a westerner to receive permission to arrive on the Russian shores of the Bering Strait.  An adventurer wishing to kayak, swim, walk over the ice, or sail from Alaska to Siberia across the Bering Strait would have to do so illegally.

Methods of Transportation

Is it possible to walk across the Bering Strait?

A common misconception is that the Bering Strait freezes in the winter time and it is easy to walk across the ice.  In reality there is a strong current flowing north through the strait which usually creates large channels of open water.  On occasion these open channels become clogged with moving chunks of pan ice, so it is theoretically possible to jump from chunk to chunk, along with some swimming across the open leads.  Luck is also required in having favourable currents.

There are two reported cases of successful ice crossings.  The first was in 1998 when a Russian father and his son attempted walking to Alaska.  They became marooned on the pack ice and spent many days drifting and cut off from shore.  The ice finally reached the far side of the Strait.  The men, on the brink of death staggered onto American soil.  More recently in 2006 English trekker, Karl Bushby, and his American companion Dimitri Kieffer succeeded in doing the reverse route.  The duo were immediately detained by the Federal Security Service and deported for entering the country illegally.

There have been several other attempts that have ended with helicopter rescues on the ice.

How about crossing in a small boat in summer?

The Bering Sea is one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world.  There are three main reasons for this; shallow depth, volatile weather, and extremely cold sea temperatures.  The depths average 35 fathoms (about 200’) which means the waves are shorter and pack more power than deep sea waves.  Additionally, strong currents make for difficult navigation.

It is recommended to cross in a seaworthy vessel capable of handling intense storms.  It is possible to cross the narrowest part of the Bering Strait in a smaller boat such as a kayak during a calm period of weather, however a support boat would be recommended.  The problem, however, is the possibility of having the boats confiscated upon reaching shore.

Bering Strait Geography

Little Diomede and Big Diomede Islands

These two islands are situated in the middle of the Bering Strait 3 km apart.  The Russian/American border (also the International Date Line) runs between them.  The smaller of these granite islands is American.

These islands can be used as a resting point during a crossing of the Bering Strait, however, being in the proximity of Russia’s Big Diomede Island will reduce the chance of a successful crossing from Alaska to Russia.  It is unlikely permission will be obtained from the Russian government to cross the Bering Strait, which means a successful crossing involves keeping a low profile.  There is a heavy military presence on Big Diomede and the soldiers will turn back any explorers trying to sneak into their country.  From what we’ve heard they are pretty good natured, and are unlikely to shoot.

After reaching mainland Russia eventually the inevitable will happen (unless you turn around and go back) and you will be arrested and deported.

Permissions

How do you cross the Bering Strait legally?

This is very difficult.  Not only is it necessary to arrive in Russia in an official port of call, but it is also necessary to depart from an official port of call.  We have not heard of any adventurers who have received permission to arrive or depart from the remote shoreline of Russia.

Is it possible to cross from Alaska to Russia legally?

Yes, but not via the Bering Strait.  It is possible to depart from Alaska outside of a port of call (a community that has customs and immigration processing facilities), but you must arrive in an official port in Russia.  The closest official port to the Bering Strait in Russia’s Far East is Providenia.  The distance across the Bering Sea from Alaska to Providenia is 400 km.  This stretch is broken by St. Lawrence Island (American) which lies 200 km out from Alaska.  The island is 125 km long, and it is 75 km from Russia.

A crossing via this route would necessitate the ability to navigate 200 km of open stormy water.  It is also necessary to receive permission from the Russian government to arrive in Providenia in a small boat (a process which takes about a year).

What it is the advantage of adhering to protocol?

If your objective is nothing other than to cross from Alaska to Russia, it is probably easiest to do so by crossing the Bering Strait and dealing with the consequences (although this is not advisable or recommended).  If your expedition involves more than just crossing to Russia (such as a human powered journey from Alabama to Kazakhstan) it is necessary to play by the rules so you will be granted permission to keep traveling through Russia.  It is impossible to travel through Russia’s Far East without appropriate permits.

What is required to arrive and travel through Eastern Siberia?

Chukotka, Russia’s most NE state, is the last closed part of the country.  This means that many of the barriers that were in place during Soviet times still apply and free travel is not allowed.  This does not mean that foreigners are banned, but strict protocol must be followed.

If one were to arrive in Providenia in a small vessel such as a rowboat or sailing vessel several things are required:

Russian Visa:   This is fairly easy to acquire and the procedure is outlined on the Website of most Russian consulates.  You can get a Russian visa for up to a year.

Rasporyazheniye:  The only thing harder than pronouncing the name of this permit is actually receiving it.  Visitors to the closed state of Chukotka need an additional permit that is not required in the rest of Russia.  In order to receive a rasporyazheniye you need a Chukotkan resident to sponsor you and vouch to look after you for the duration of your stay.  This sponsor also needs to be registered with a special division of the government, which most people aren’t.  Those who have this special registration are mainly the owners of the few “tourist” agencies so it is necessary to go through them.  These agencies can be found on the official Chukotka website at:  www.chukotka.org .  We would not recommend Nikolai Ettynne of the organization Alliot.

Additionally, because free travel is not allowed, a detailed itinerary and outline of your route must be submitted.  Each administrator or mayor of the various communities en route must give advance permission for you to enter their community.  The itinerary also must be okayed by the military.   It is very difficult to change your route once in the country, so plan carefully. After these requirements have been met a rasporyazheniye will be granted.  It is virtually impossible for an outsider to take care of these requirements so a Chukotkan “tourist” agency must be recruited and compensated to look after these details.

Start the process of applying for your rasporyazhniye a year before you plan to arrive in Chukotka.

Special Permits:   Any communications devices (including cell phones) and electronics that communicate with satellites (such as a GPS) need special permits from Moscow.  If the official documents from Moscow are not procured upon arrival, these items will be confiscated.  Again, the tourist agency you are working with can take care of these details, but be sure to start the process very early.

Coast Guard:  If you are arriving in a small boat approval is also required from the Russian Coast Guard.

Communication:   After you have received all your permissions and permits, it is essential to continually update the authorities with your ETA.  It is absolutely essential not to arrive unannounced.  Progress updates need to be relayed via your sponsoring organization.  When you arrive in the Port of Providenia you will be greeted by about fifteen officials including customs, immigration and members of the military.

And that’s it.  If you have your Russian Visa, rasporyazheniye, local sponsor, special permits, permissions and you continually communicate with the officials you will hopefully be able to step off your kayak and into the country.

We have only heard of one other expedition (apart from our own) that has entered Providenya by small boat.  Mike Horn arrived from Alaska in a sailboat with two others.  They had Russian visas but not their additional permits.  Mike Horn was detained and deported, and his crew was sent back out to sea.

Beringian Gap Geography

What is the Beringian Gap?

There is a 5000 km gap between the Russian and American road systems.  The Bering Sea is only one of the inconveniences separating the two road networks.  It is an endless wilderness of boggy tundra, boreal forests and rivers.  Additionally Far Eastern Russia is the coldest area on the planet outside of Antarctica.

For expeditions wishing to cross the Beringian gap by human power various factors must be considered carefully to minimize the dangers.  It is virtually impossible to trek through the wilderness of Chukotka in the summer (apart from the drier peninsula stretching 750 km betweem Providenya and Anadyr) due to endless bogs, rivers, and lakes.  The only realistic time to pass through this region is during the frigid winter months when all water becomes solid.  Depending on what route you choose from Providenia it is between 2500 km to 3500 km to reach the roads connecting the rest of Russia.

In Alaska, the Dalton Highway joining Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay is the last strip catering to the automobile.  The easiest way to reach the Bering Sea from the Dalton Highway is to paddle down the Yukon River.  It is about 1600 km from the Dalton Highway Bridge to the mouth of the Yukon.

The mouth of the Yukon River is situated at the closest point to St. Lawrence Island for the crossing to Siberia.

Bering Sea  Conditions Strong north-flowing currents sweep the upper portions of the Bering Sea.  In the vicinity of St. Lawrence Island currents average half to one knot.  In the Straits around Little Diomede and Big Diomede currents flow 1-2 knots.

Wind direction is extremely variable and during the summer there are no reliable prevailing winds.  Visibility is often limited with thick cloud cover and light mist or fog.  Storms are powerful, frequent and move in quickly.  The unpredictability of the weather makes it difficult to gauge ideal weather conditions for a crossing.

Climate in Chukotka Summer in Chukotka can be pleasant with temperatures reaching the low twenties.  Often storms rolling off the Bering Sea can produce very windy conditions.

Winter in Chukotka is the most extreme in the planet.  It is much, much colder than Alaska due to the fact that the prevailing weather comes from the west and chills as it moves across the largest landmass in the world.  In central Chukotka temperatures hover around -50 for long periods through the winter.

It is the winds accompanying these extreme temperatures that really make the weather abysmal.   The location of Chukotka between the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific creates unique meteorological conditions, and frequently winds from 50-100 km/hr blast across the peninsula.  Wind chill temperature is often below -100.  The lack of vegetation trees and blowing snow means that whiteout conditions are very frequent.

Russia expels 6 British diplomats it accuses of spying; UK calls it 'baseless'

Russia on Friday accused six British diplomats of spying and said it decided to expel them. The United Kingdom said the “completely baseless” move came weeks ago and was linked to its action in May to revoke the credentials of an attaché at the Russian Embassy and limit Moscow’s diplomatic activities in London.

The latest East-West tensions unfolded as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visits Washington for talks that will include Ukraine’s request to use Western-supplied weapons to strike targets inside Russia. President Vladimir Putin has warned that Kyiv’s use of long-range weapons would put NATO at war with Moscow.

Russia’s Federal Security Service said in an online statement that the Foreign Ministry withdrew the British envoys' accreditations, and Russian TV quoted an FSB official as saying it was decided to expel them.

The FSB said it received documents indicating the diplomats were sent to Russia by a division of the U.K.'s Foreign Office “whose main task is to inflict a strategic defeat on our country,” and that they were involved in “intelligence-gathering and subversive activities.” It did not identify the six diplomats.

The FSB warned that if other diplomats are found to be carrying out “similar actions,” it “will demand early termination of their missions” to Russia.

Russian TV said the six diplomats had met with independent media and rights groups that have been declared “foreign agents” — a label Russian authorities have actively used against organizations and individuals critical of the Kremlin.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a statement that the diplomats were carrying out “subversive actions aimed at causing harm to our people.”

“We fully agree with the assessments of the activities of the British so-called diplomats expressed by the Russian FSB," she added in an online statement. "The British Embassy has gone far beyond the limits outlined by the Vienna Conventions.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said breaking off diplomatic relations with the U.K. was not on the table right now.

In calling the Russian allegations "completely baseless,” the U.K. Foreign Office said the expulsions happened weeks ago, linking them to Britain’s decision in May to revoke the credentials of an attaché at Moscow’s London embassy and to impose a five-year time limit on all Russian diplomats in Britain.

“The Russian authorities revoked the diplomatic accreditation of six U.K. diplomats in Russia last month, following action taken by the U.K. government in response to Russian state-directed activity across Europe and in the U.K.,” the Foreign Office said in a statement. “We are unapologetic about protecting our national interests.”

In May, the U.K. expelled Russia’s defense attaché in London, alleging he was an undeclared intelligence officer, and it closed several Russian diplomatic properties in Britain that it said were being used for spying. About a week later, Russia reciprocated and expelled Britain’s defense attaché.

Expulsions of diplomats — both Western envoys working in Russia and Russians in the West — have become increasingly common since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Last year, the Russian news outlet RBC counted that Western countries and Japan expelled a total 670 Russian diplomats between the start of 2022 and October 2023, while Moscow responded by expelling 346 diplomats. According to RBC, that was more than in the previous 20 years combined.

On his way to visit the United States, Starmer said Britain does not “seek any conflict with Russia.”

“Russia started this conflict. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. Russia could end this conflict straight away,” he told reporters.

“Ukraine has the right to self-defense and we’ve obviously been absolutely fully supportive of Ukraine’s right to self-defense — we’re providing training capability, as you know. But we don’t seek any conflict with Russia — that’s not our intention in the slightest,” he said.

Ukraine wants approval to use some weapons to strike deeper into Russia and there are signs that President Joe Biden might shift U.S. policy in response.

While the issue is expected to be at the top of the agenda for their meeting, it appeared unlikely that Biden and Starmer would announce any policy changes at this time, according to two U.S. officials familiar with planning for the talks. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the private deliberations.

Ukrainian officials renewed their pleas to use Western-provided long-range missiles against targets deeper inside Russia during this week’s visit to Kyiv by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Blinken said he had “no doubt” that Biden and Starmer would discuss the matter during their visit, noting the United States has adapted and “will adjust as necessary” as Russia’s battlefield strategy has changed.
