7 Birds-Eye View Photos of a Mega Yacht Docked in Portland Harbor

As more and more people flock to Maine for a visit, Portland Harbor starts to see more and more of those visitors arrive by private boat. One of those boats has been docked in Portland Harbor over the past week and this particular boat stands out in the harbor more than any other.

Nicholas LaRiviere of Firefly Media Inc. shared photos with us that he took with his drone flying over Portland Harbor. Down below is a massive yacht that dwarfs all the others, that according to GoLocalProv.com is named the Veva,  and it was docked in Newport, Rhode Island before coming up to Portland.

The $175 million mega yacht is sitting at the east end of Portland Harbor and is reportedly owned by billionaire Frank Fertitta who also owns Station Casinos in Las Vegas and is the founder of the company that owns the UFC. For those who aren't familiar, that's Ultimate Fight Championship, a mixed martial arts company that broadcasts events regularly on streaming and pay-per-view service.

Super Yacht Fan  lists the Veva  as 94 meters in length, able to host up to 14 guests and a crew of 18. Oh, and it also has a helicopter and a landing pad. No need to take a small boat into the city as long as you can find a place to touchdown.

Nicholas was kind enough to send us seven photos he took during his drone flight over Portland Harbor as it passed by the mega yacht, giving you an idea of just how big this thing is and how cool it looks with the city of Portland behind it.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The largest single-mast sailing yacht ever built is now docked in Portland, towering over the other boats.

The M5 measures about 277-feet-long (84 meters) and has a mast extending 54 feet (16 meters). The Portland Press Herald reports the massive watercraft arrived Monday from Newport, Rhode Island.

“Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors” Publisher John Hanson says the people who own yachts like the M5 “have large egos and it takes a very large yacht to carry them.”

The M5 was originally commissioned by Avis CEO Joseph Vittoria.

The Abandoned Fort Baldwin In Maine Is One Of The Eeriest Places In America

Fort Baldwin in Maine is an abandoned coastal defense fort from World War I and II, now a well-preserved and eerie historical site hidden in the forest.

Out of all the abandoned places in Maine I have been to, Fort Baldwin, Maine still remains one of my favorites. Long-lost places can always give off an eerie vibe. Deep in forgotten forests, nature seems to consume and reclaim what once was. Abandoned places can be shrouded in mystery. These are the things that draw us to them and the things that keep us coming back for more. It may be the history or the allure of these dark locations but one thing is for sure. The abandoned Fort Baldwin in Maine is a must-see for anyone visiting Popham.

Most people in Maine have heard of Popham; it is a widely popular beach and fort area that is fun for the whole family. While everyone is soaking up the sun with their feet in the sand or exploring the old coastal fort at Popham State Park most of them don't know what is looming in the forest nearby. Right across the water from the old Fort Popham is an area where hidden away is another fort, sitting long forgotten in the woods. Allow your imagination to wander to one of these creepy places in Maine.

alt

Fort Baldwin was used during World War I and World War II in an effort for coastal defense. Although the defense of our Maine coast was thankfully never needed, this now disarmed fort sits as a testament that most of the world was at war during the early part of the 20th century.

Grass has grown up around the structures, and trees now tower around the abandoned fort.

alt

It seems almost out of place in the middle of a forest. The stillness and quiet that can be found there is almost eerie. Take a walk up and down the stairs and visit the vacant rooms.

Four structures can be found along a linear path leading to each one.

alt

Every building has several rooms to explore and we suggest bringing a flashlight because it will be pitch black in some of the inner rooms. I am telling you this is one of the best urbex in Maine destinations.

Unlike other abandoned places, there is not much graffiti in the fort.

alt

The level of preservation in these structures is almost unreal. The brick looks perfectly preserved as well as a few other features of the fort.

Exploring the woods around the fort is a great option while you are there too.

alt

They are a little bit more hidden but if you look around you can find the massive concrete slabs that once held huge mounted guns. The cannons are no longer there of course, but the rails are, and you can imagine how big the guns really were.

One of the coolest structures is the tower.

alt

Soaring high above all of the other buildings and just left in the middle of the woods sits the observatory tower. This was used to call out the location the cannons would be shooting. Now this abandoned building sits unable to clearly see over the trees that have grown around it. The door is locked now but in times past you could even climb the stairs to the top of the tower.

Fort Baldwin Maine is lost to the forest and to history. Many people do not know this abandoned fort in Maine exists. If you go enjoy the incredibly well-preserved structures and make sure to be respectful so many others can enjoy them for years to come. If you want a closer look at these amazing structures then check out this Adventuring in the Moment video.

This Maine Fort Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation

Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in Maine is known for its haunted history, including the ghost of Chief Taukolexis.

With a history as long as Maine's there are quite a few stories dating back centuries. While some are good (hooray for the founding of the state!) some are not quite as nice. An example is the killing of Native American Chief Taukolexis at Fort William Henry at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in Bristol. It's one of the most haunted places in Maine .

Built in 1692 during King William's War, Fort William Henry was created by the English to help defend against the French and Wabanaki Confederacy of Acadia.

alt

It stood for four years before being destroyed in the Siege of Pemaquid in 1696. This is the site of one of the most historic places in Maine.

alt

Much of Maine's land was occupied by indigenous people when white settlers arrived, a history that too often is erased from our history books.

alt

During that time, Tarratine Native American chief Taukolexis was killed by the English just steps from the fort.

alt

Hanged from a tree, his soul is said to still roam the area around the fort.

alt

Employees and visitors have reported seeing a white orb outside the entrance to the fort that travels between the reconstructed building to the area where he is believed to have been hanged.

alt

Others have reported feeling an eerie cold. Does the spirit of Chief Taukolexis roam the area or is this another haunted Maine ghost story sensationalized by visitors on a foggy, Maine day? Go for a visit and you be the judge!

alt

So, if you're on the hunt for "haunted places near me," visit Fort William Henry.

Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site , one of the most haunted places in Maine, is located at Huddle Rd in New Harbor. It's open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Super yacht docked in Portland Harbor among world’s largest

The M5, at 277 feet long and 54 feet wide, is the largest single-masted sailing yacht in the world, and as of Thursday, it's moored at DiMillo's Marina.

The M5, the largest single-masted yacht ever built, dwarfs other boats at DiMillo's Marina in Portland. The luxury yacht measures 277 feet long by 54 feet wide and comfortably sleeps 12. The vessel has room for a smaller yacht held inside its hull, and deck space for a small float plane.

The largest single-masted sailing yacht ever built is docked in Portland Harbor and towering over DiMillo’s Marina in the Old Port.

Called the M5 and measuring about 277 feet long with a beam 54 feet, the massive pleasure craft arrived Monday, a DiMillo’s employee said.

Where it’s headed or who’s aboard has not been publicly disclosed, but according to MarineTraffic.com, the vessel sailed to Maine from Newport, Rhode Island.

But one thing is for sure – the owner is likely wealthier than your wildest dreams.

“The guys who have the money and the wherewithal to do this have large egos and it takes a very large yacht to carry them,” said John Hanson, publisher of Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors magazine. Advertisement

Hanson said the original owners of boats this size are typically open and public about it, while those who buy them “used” tend to be more discreet. “The first owner builds it as a way to show how big and powerful he is,” Hanson said.

In this case, the M5 was commissioned by Joseph Vittoria, the former chairman and CEO of Avis rental car company. It was completed at a British shipyard and launched in 2004 under the name Mirabella V, but was renamed in 2012 after the boat changed owners.

The original price was not reported at the time it was launched, but was later estimated to be $50 million by people in the maritime industry.

Vittoria reportedly sold the sloop in 2011 for $25 million, according to Fortune magazine and other sources. The buyer was Rod Lewis, a billionaire Texas oil-and-gas tycoon.

The vessel has a master bedroom suite on its main deck and six cabins that sleep up to 12 people. Running the boat requires a crew of more than a dozen, according to a 2010 Greenwich Time story .

And if mooring it isn’t possible, there is a smaller yacht stored inside the hull that can be launched to ferry passengers and visitors back and forth to shore from an anchorage. Advertisement

If water travel isn’t appealing, there is even space to park a small sea plane on the stern, thanks to a retrofit that extended the M5’s overall length.

Hanson said that many boats this size are often chartered, and at great cost.

As of 2005, the yacht’s charter rate per week was about $420,000, and if it was rented 14 weeks a year, the rental revenue of about $5.9 million would equal its annual operating costs, the Greenwich newspaper reported. Whether those figures still hold true is unknown.

While larger sailing yachts with more masts have been constructed, M5 still ranks as the largest of the single-mast variety, according to BoatInternational.com, a clearinghouse for news and advertisements for yacht sales, rankings and charters and other expensive maritime hobbies. The Greenwich paper reported that the mast is nearly 290 feet tall, nearly the height of the Statue of Liberty and too tall to fit under the Golden Gate Bridge, according to Forbes.

Hanson said Maine is a popular destination this time of year for wealthy, seafaring travelers.

“There’s no place better to have your boat in August than the coast of Maine. Seriously,” he said. “Maine is the most awesome cruising grounds in the world. And that’s why they’re here. You can explore the coast of Maine in a 24-footer you get on Craigslist, and have the same experience. Well, not quite the same experience. You might be drinking out of a beer can. But the view is the same.”

NFL Owner Docked His $180 Million Dollar Yacht In Portland This Weekend

If you spend enough time on the Portland waterfront in the summer, you're bound to see some impressive looking yachts. But all those impressive looking yachts pale in comparison to the luxury super-yacht that docked in Portland Harbor over the 4th of July holiday, a $180 million dollar floating mansion belonging to Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Shared on Twitter by Cathering Culley , the yacht is named DreAMBoat, and no that isn't an error in capitalization, the AMB in dreamboat is capitalized to highlight Arthur Blank's initials. Blank has made a majority of his fortune from being the co-founder of Home Depot, and has his hand in many different businesses ventures, including owning multiple professional sports teams. While Portland is accustomed to seeing massive cruise ships docked in the city, Blank's super-yacht drew a lot of eyes and attention over the weekend.

According to Superyachtfan.com , DreAMBoat was built in 2019 and holds a crew of 33 people and up to 23 guests on its various journeys around the globe. The main deck is fitted with a full sized swimming pool while the master suite is fitted with a private deck and jacuzzi. There are 27 cabins total on the yacht, and it's several floors can be accessed by a glass-encased elevator in the center of yacht.

The reason for DreAMBoat's stop in Portland is unclear. It could have been as simple as a pitstop in the midst of a longer journey or a chance to spend a long weekend in a trendy city in the northeast. Either way, Blank's big boat had almost as many eyes on it this weekend as fireworks did across Maine .

Portland is Maine's second largest cruise port - following Bar Harbor . This port city is located on a peninsula (Maine USA's east coast) and north of Boston MA . On the West Coast USA is the namesake Portland Oregon .

Portland ME features historical and architectural attractions, and is also a major commercial, shipping and fishing centre. The port is a gateway to the resort islands in Casco Bay. There's a historic trail and lighthouse in the town. The nearby Kennebunkport is also worth visiting. Its art colony and Seashore Trolley Museum display more than 200 authentic streetcars.

Established in 1632, the town was destroyed in 1676 by Indians, and again in 1690 by Indians and the French. The settlement (then part of Falmouth) was damaged by the British in 1775. In 1786, after being separated from Falmouth, it was named after Portland England .

In 2015, the visiting around 55,000 cruise tourists had an economic impact of USD 5,8 million. In 2016, the cruise port handled 70 ship calls. In August 2016, the port had its ever largest cruise ship docked -  RCI' s  Anthem of the Seas , bringing to the city 4974 passengers and 1480 crew. Cruising season 2016's economic impact was USD 11 million.

In 2017, the port reported a record year as the number of visiting cruise passengers for the first time ever exceeded 100,000. Port's statistics showed a 6% increase in passenger volumes and a 10% increase in crew numbers over 2016. In 2018, the port handled total 32 ship calls (23% over 2017) and around 39,000 passengers. For season 2019 were booked 40 berths.

On March 16, 2018, was announced a plan to fund the USD 2 million ferry terminal's upgrade project. The Ocean Gateway terminal serves all ferries connecting Maine USA with Nova Scotia (NS Canada). The primary funding party will be the Canadian company Bay Ferries Ltd (headquartered in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island ), which together with the NS government would pay for most of the upgrades. The decision was made after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency threatened to close the terminal's customs service as it didn't meet USA's federal standards. Bay Ferries is a subsidiary of Northumberland Ferries Ltd (parent NFL Holdings Ltd) and is subsidized by the NS taxpayers.

Portland ME cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Portland ME dock at Portland Ocean Terminal. Following the berth extension and dredging project (completed in April 2017), now the port can dock ships with LOA length 340 m (1115 ft) and max draft 11 m (36 ft). Port's total berthing space is around 2000 m (6560 ft).

The city is linked by  ferries  with Nova Scotia. In November 2017, the ferry service from Ocean Gateway terminal was terminated after US Customs required a terminal renovation (around USD 7 million in upgrades) in order the passenger facility to meet federal standards. The ferry service Maine - Nova Scotia will start again only if Portland provides USD 2 million for the project.

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to liveaboard your sailboat full time, you should jump at it. That’s something that many people dream of doing but the opportunity sadly never arises for them.

There are lots of things to consider when deciding if you can make living aboard your sailboat work for you. Whether or not you have a big family, a dog, a job you can’t afford to give up, or elderly parents you feel the need to stay by will all play a part.

If you decide that, yes, you can make living aboard your boat full-time work for you there are going to be some big questions to answer. Most importantly is where do you want to live?

Living on a boat offers the opportunity to sail from place to place, part of the beauty of it is that you don’t need to pick one location. Unless of course you still want to have a relatively normal life. If you want to work in a normal office, have normal friendships, and feel at home in the community you might feel better sticking to one area for a while.

If that’s the case, perhaps the great state of Maine is the place for you. This article covers not only what makes Maine a great state for sailors but which marinas should be on your radar.

Table of contents

Why might someone want to liveaboard their sailboat in Maine?

Maine is a peaceful state. Sure, you can find a nightlife here and there and there is a decent population of young people. But for the most part, though, it is quiet. It is peaceful. It is a sailor’s dream. Maine is home to a huge amount of woodland national parks. The Acadia National Forest is right on your doorstep offering a plethora of camping, hiking, and various other outdoor activities. If you are planning on bringing a dog with you, there are very few places that are as good for dog walking as the Acadia National Forest. Maine also has a very low cost of living, if you are bringing your work from home job with you then you will find your money going a heck of a lot further. This means you may even find it sustainable to buy/lease a car and live on your boat. If you are a foodie you are in luck. There are dozens of annual Maine food festivals to keep you entertained throughout the year.

What are some things to consider when living aboard your boat in Maine?

Maine is an amazing place to live, there are so many things to see and so many beautiful hiking trails that the entire state is an outdoorsman’s dream. If you are moving to Maine because you are retiring, the endless walks, waterfalls, forest trails, and fishing lakes are perhaps precisely what you are looking for. Maine is also home to over 3500 miles of rocky, jagged, coastlines that will be fun to explore from land or by sea. There is more to see at sea in Maine than in many other states. Having a diverse and interesting coastline doesn’t mean too much to ordinary people. It means a heck of a lot to sailors though. They are the ones that spend their time looking at it!

The people in Maine are friendly. Very friendly. This is great for most people, moving somewhere new and immediately feeling like you fit in is so important. And feeling like you are being not just accepted but welcomed into the community is a true blessing. Unless, of course, you prefer to keep yourself to yourself. If you are a very private person who prefers to be alone then Maine might not be the state for you. Chances are your marina slip neighbors are going to want to come over to say hello, introduce themselves, and try to include you in the community. Whether it is the community of the town or just the marina. It is up to you to decide whether or not this sounds like a good thing or a bad thing. It is entirely a matter of personal preference.

The weather in Maine is best described as mild. It doesn’t get too hot, it doesn’t get too cold. But it does rain. A lot. If the fact that Maine has about 173 days of rain per year is a problem for you then you might want to look elsewhere. Rain for someone living on their boat is more important than someone in an apartment. Do you mind feeling trapped on your boat because the weather doesn’t allow you to be out and about? For some sailors, being “trapped” on a boat doesn’t feel like being trapped at all. It’s precisely where they want to be.

Once you have decided whether or not Maine is the place for you. It hopefully is! It is a good idea to start thinking about the logistics of the move. If you already have a boat, but don’t live on it full time, its time to start deciding what you do and don’t need. Discovering whether you can take your job with you or you need to find a new one is also very important. Lastly, its time to decide where in Maine is best for you. Maine is a pretty small state by comparison. It has a very short coastline, so you aren’t exactly spoilt for choice. That being said, there are some great marinas in Maine. If you have the time, visiting some of these marinas in person before you commit is a very good idea. When you are visiting, use this next section to help you know what to look for.

What are some good qualities to look for in a marina?

Some marinas are great. Some are bad. Most sit somewhere in the middle. Unless you are very wealthy or are scraping pennies together to afford the marina, you are going to be looking for one somewhere in the middle. A marina that has all the basics for a good price in a good location should be top of the list. Luckily, Maine has many such marinas. Here are some factors to consider when comparing similar marinas to ensure that you are getting the most out of your money. Marinas are not cheap, so ensuring you get good value from your lease is very important.

If you are living aboard your boat you are going to end up with very few possessions. For some people, this is a problem, for most people though it is a blessing. Having minimal possessions is easier to manage and far more sustainable. But, it does have some downsides when all of those possessions are limited to your boat. If someone were to break into your boat they would be able to take everything of value you own. It would only take them a few minutes too. Boats don’t have very many “hidey holes”. Most things will be out in the open. Unless you are planning on guarding your boat 24/7 you are going to want to rely on good marina security. Good security meaning CCTV, guards on duty, high fences, secure keycode gates, and friendly neighbors. Neighbors who will watch your boat for you and keep an eye on the happenings.

Maine technically has a very long coastline. This is because it is so rough and jagged. In practical terms, the coastline is truly quite short. There are only a few towns/cities on the coast that are worth your while staying at. So, picking the right one depends largely on work. If you don’t have a job lined up already then the best advice will be to follow the work. Find a job and choose the marina based on that. If you have the luxury of not needing to work or being able to work from home, then the best advice would be to try a few marinas out before settling on a more long term lease.

Maine has a very low cost of living. This means groceries, rent, utilities, and activities are relatively low compared to the rest of the country. It does not mean that wages are low. So, this makes Maine a great place to live financially speaking. These low costs translate directly into marina costs too. You can rent a marina slip in Maine for less than $3000 a year. This is FAR less than renting in somewhere like Florida or California that could be anywhere between 2 and 4 times that.

Good amenities include so many things. Having a nice shower block with decent bathrooms may play a part. Having swimming pools or hot tubs that are available for residents to use may be on the table. Having access to a private gym at no extra cost is a great benefit that people often fail to consider. Having a laundry room on-site that has both washers and dryers is a blessing that you will surely miss if there isn’t one available. Your marina should be considered an extension of your home. If there are no amenities you will have to find the things you need elsewhere. Whether that is carrying your dirty laundry 5 blocks to find a laundromat or having to take a bus across town to find a gym.

Wifi and good cell service:

If you are someone who needs to work from home regularly, be it full time or part, you are going to need wifi or decent cell service. Probably both. It is very hard to get by in the modern world without a stable internet connection. You cant pay your bills, can’t connect with family, and cant hunt for a job should you need to. Even if you already have a job you will be expected to be in reach. Be it from email or from text/call you will need a way of communicating with colleagues and clients alike. Even if that isn’t an issue you need to consider your personal life. Not being able to watch movies, watch sports, stream music, or chat with friends will be very draining. Sure, it may be nice for a week or two. Maybe even a month. But after that, you are going to be both bored and lonely. At least most people will be.

What are the best liveaboard marinas in Maine?

Maine is not the largest state, its coastline is even smaller, so you aren’t exactly spoilt for choice. But, there ARE choices. Luckily, since Maine is a very affordable place to live, price shouldn’t play all that much into your choice. You may want to consider what else you will need to spend your money on, what day to day expenses will need to be considered to help you get by. Like a car. Since there isn’t as much public transport available here as there would be in say, Los Angeles, you will NEED a car. Especially if you plan on exploring the rest of the state. Here is a breakdown of the best liveaboard marinas in Maine:

Portland Maine

  • Maine Yacht Center
  • Sunset Marina
  • DiMillo’s Old Port
  • Portland Yacht Service
  • Spring Point Marina Dock House
  • South Port Marine

Rockland Maine

  • Landings Marina
  • Journey’s End Marina
  • Knight Marine Service
  • Rockland Yacht Club
  • North End Shipyard

Kennebunk Maine

  • Kennebunk Port Marina
  • Chicks Marina
  • DiMillo’s Kennebunk
  • Yachtsman Hotel and Marina Club
  • General Marine
  • Arundel Wharf

As you can see, Maine is a pretty great place to live. Especially if you are planning on retiring there. Low cost of living means that your pension will go further, you will get more for your money and will have more disposable income to spend on the things that matter to you most. If the constant rainy weather isn’t a turn off for you, Maine is truly a place that you can make your home. The people are welcoming, the food is great, the countryside is beautiful and the marinas are cheap. What else do you need? What more could you want?

big yacht in portland maine

It’s a habit. Anytime I’m driving north on I-295 out of Portland, Maine, I can’t help but look toward the water, beyond the iconic Burnham & Morrill baked bean factory to a forest of masts and the sprawling docks of Maine Yacht Center on the eastern edge of Portland Harbor.

Harris’s experience, skill, and connections have greatly influenced the development of the yard. Consider a snapshot of his curriculum vitae: bosun’s mate on a sail-training tall-ship; graduate of the Landing School’s yacht design program; yacht designer for Benford Design Group; UMass Boston graduate with a degree in applied physics; managing partner at Rumery’s Boat Yard in Biddeford; and eight years in France working with the IMOCA 60 offshore racing fleet.

His hard-won experience managing ocean racers has kept a steady parade of high-end racing sailboat work coming MYC’s way, in addition to a full plate of recreational boat repair, maintenance, service and storage work. Off season, the MYC employee roster includes 25 full-time tradespeople, including ABYC- and NMEA-certified technicians, and five administrative and support employees. In season, the addition of marina operations personnel brings the staffing level up to 35 employees.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, this year’s workload comprises a typical mix of power and sailboat projects. First on the list, the yard has undertaken the refit of the Class 40 GryphonSolo2 for Joe Harris (no relation to Brian), who will be participating in the first Globe 40 race in June of 2021. The competition is a double-handed around the world race with stops.

The GryphonSolo2 refit is extensive. “We’ll be replacing the rod-rigging, backstays, furlers, rudder bearings, steering system components, sails, and upgrading the satellite and electronics systems. She’s on a really tight schedule, too. We’ll launch her in early April, do sea trials mid-April, and by the end of April, Joe Harris will depart on the delivery sail to Europe for the start of the Globe 40 race on June 11,” Harris said.

And then there are the Figaros. Several years ago, racer-educator Rich Wilson helped start the Collegiate Offshore Sailing Circuit, and partnered with Maine Yacht Center, to promote college-level short-handed offshore sailing competition. (Wilson raced the 2017 Vendee Globe single-handed, non-stop race around the world in Great American IV , which had been refit at Maine Yacht Center.) “College sailors do a lot of around-the-buoy racing, but there’s no place for those sailors to go after that,” Harris explained. “The thought is that by exposing them to offshore sailing, they may turn into lifelong sailors.”

The collegiate sailing organization purchased a fleet of 10 retired Beneteau-built Figaro II-class performance boats in France and shipped them to Portland. Maine Yacht Center was commissioned to do a complete refit and upgrade program for the entire fleet. Under a charter/lease agreement with various universities, an offshore racing program and competition was established.

“They’re really cool boats,” Harris said. “They’re water-ballasted, twin rudder, high-performance offshore racing machines. A large portion of our staff are competitive sailors, so it’s special for the team to have the opportunity to work and sail on the Figaros.”

In the summer of 2019, Harris’ team refit a half-dozen of the Figaros, and the first competition was held in the Fall of 2019. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put the program on hold. Today, all the boats are stored at MYC, with hopes for a vibrant 2021 racing season.

Other projects on deck include a refit of one of the newest J/Boats, a 40-foot′ offshore racing machine. The MYC team will remove the water ballast system to get around the heavy racing handicap that water-ballasted boats incur. “It’s simple,” Harris said with a knowing grin. “They’re playing the rating game!”

The Maine Yacht Center team also has their hands in the powerboat sector. A classic lobsterboat is in the shop waiting on an interior reconfiguration. And last season, the yard installed a Seakeeper gyro-stabilization system on a Grand Banks 49 motoryacht. The boat’s new owner had owned a trawler with traditional stabilizers, but he wanted to go fast. The new boat did go three times faster than his old trawler, but she rolled, and he didn’t like that. “It was a big project because we had to engineer and install structural longitudinal and transverse beams to take the load of the gyro unit. These inertial loads are enormous—you can rip the bottom right out of the boat if you’re not careful,” Harris warned.

Skeptical at first, Harris was shocked by the Seakeeper results. “It’s like Star Trek stuff—it’s unbelievably effective and efficient. For sea trials, we went out and did huge donuts with the Seakeeper off, and the rolling was bad,” he recalled. “Then we did the same maneuvers with the Seakeeper on, and it was so smooth you could leave your coffee cup on the bridge deck and not spill a drop—rolling was reduced by 90 percent.”

In 2015, MYC purchased three large buildings on nearby Presumpscot Street. One of the buildings has been leased to Hamilton Marine. A second building is leased to Eldridge Lumber, while the third, 30,000 square-foot building brings the company’s total heated inside boat storage to 60,000 square feet. This year, MYC also leased a large piece of land from the adjacent B&M factory for additional outdoor winter storage.

The Presumpscot storage building came with a unique set of challenges. Boats that were hauled with the company’s 80-ton Travelift at the main yard would have to be transported via Brownell hydraulic trailer to the Presumpscot building over city streets, by way of two low bridges with just 14 feet′ of air clearance. “Logistics aside, transporting boats on a Brownell trailer over city streets carries a huge potential for accidents and liability,” said Harris, “and the potholes and bumps are not kind to a vessel.”

big yacht in portland maine

It just so happens a railroad spur runs alongside the MYC main yard and passes next to the Presumpscot storage building. By luck and good fortune, the bridges that are over the railroad tracks have 25′feet of air draft.

“When we first started looking at the possibility of transporting boats via the tracks, it was still an active rail line,” Harris recalled. The company had to apply to the Federal Railroad Authority for a special license to operate on the line. And because the line belongs to the State of Maine, Harris had to negotiate a lease agreement with the state. “It took years to sort all of this stuff out,” he said.

With the paperwork out of the way, and his engineering hat on, Harris tackled the operational logistics of moving the boats by rail. The team first built a pair of railroad crossings, one at each building. “Then we designed and built a set of hydraulic-operated trolleys to fit under each end of our Brownell trailer,” Harris said. “The steel trolleys, mounted on a set of railroad wheels, were engineered to carry the weight of the Brownell trailer and the boat being transported.

To move a boat, the trolleys are placed on the tracks with a forklift. The trailer and boat are then moved over the trolleys, and the trailer is lowered to sit on the trolly decks with the Brownell tires suspended in the air. Using quick-release fittings, the trailer’s hydraulic plant is connected to the trolly’s hydraulic drive motor. Harris breaks into a big grin here, “And then we choo-choo the half mile to the Presumpscot Street building at eight miles per hour! At the other end, we reverse the procedure to unload the trailer and boat.”

Harris considers it a superior system to traditional over-the-road transport; no low bridges, no liability associated with over-the road travel, and, “the rail ride is smooth as silk since we don’t have to deal with pot holes and bumps in the roads—it’s so much easier on the boats!”

The innovative use of the now-abandoned rail spur has allowed Harris to dramatically expand the yard’s storage capacity, and to ride the wave of increased demand for indoor heated storage. “Today, inside storage is what everybody’s about in Maine. Ten years ago, the idea of storing an 80-foot′ motoryacht in a heated inside storage building wasn’t even an option in Maine—you had to take it south for the winter.”

“Personally, I’ve been really lucky that I’ve been able to satisfy my engineering curiosity with high-tech race boats and today’s sophisticated cruising yachts while living here in Maine,” Harris reflected. “Maine Yacht Center has come a long way in a relatively short time, and its largely because we have a lot of exceptionally talented, long-time employees. I think that speaks well of our company philosophy and culture.”

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Mike Lynch remains missing after a luxury yacht sank off of Sicily's coast. Lynch, who sold his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, had recently been acquitted of fraud charges related to the sale.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

A rescue boat of the Italian Coast Guard operates in Porticello near Palermo, on Tuesday, a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including U.K. tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Our Customers Rave About Us

The boat ride was so much fun and so much more intimate than a big boat. It can def. get a bit choppy at times but the seats are well cushioned which makes for a great adventure. Captain and staff are very nice and experienced. We saw some seals and 2 humpbacks which def. gave us a great show smacking their fins into the water. We would highly recommend this adventure. Regardless of what wildlife you will sight the boat ride on its own is worth the trip. Thx again.

It included stopping at an area to watch seals, a lighthouse and the history, seeing the Bush estate and their boat, and tons of thrills riding the waves! It was not rough as we thought and you don't get soaked; just a little bit of sea spray which was nice on a hot day. Captain Gary was knowledgeable and fun by throwing in humor now and then. We were glad for the little pockets in front of our seats to put our phones and jackets. We'll be back for another tour next summer and we really want to experience their Hampden Beach location.

We had a great time on our hour long scenic thrill ride! My husband and I took my dad as a belated Father’s Day gift (he loves a good rush) and we were not disappointed. The seats were neat. They were three vertical rows that you had to straddle. There was a handle bar in front of you. We felt safe and comfortable. It was a tremendous thrill. My only complaint is that I wish it lasted longer! Because of this, I’m excited to book another trip with them in the coming years, whether it’s the whale watch or the lighthouse tour. My family and I stay in Ogunquit nearly every year and this was a great new activity to try in the area! Highly recommend!! Thank you for a great time!

(1) We recommend using the Thames St. Parking Lot which is located directly in front of Fore Points Marina. The address to the lot is Eastern Promenade Trail, Portland, ME 04101. The rates are $5 an hour.

(2) There is also a parking garage on Thames St. It sits on the left before you get to the parking lot. It’s a little further of a walk but it’s sheltered. The rates are $5 an hour.

(3) Walking is always a great option! We’re just a 5 – minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Commercial St.

Maine , South Coast and Casco Bay

Photo: Kaleb Kloppe on Flickr

Portland, the largest city in Maine, is located on Casco Bay. It has several marinas, great provisioning, and is a big "foodie" destination with dozens of excellent restaurants. Stay awhile and explore the bike paths, working waterfront, and art museum. Or spend a few days on Casco Bay with its scenic, secluded anchorages.

Portland is a great city to visit, although not necessarily easy to access by boat. Marinas are expensive and none currently offer transient moorings. There is a new public dinghy dock with a six-hour tie-up; Fore Points Marina, which offers a dinghy dock for extended periods, charges a fee. Despite the prices, Portland is a wonderful place, and the sailing community and Portland city officials are working to make the waterfront more accessible to transient sailors.

Approach & Cautions

Photo: Portland Head Light by Dennis Weeks, Flickr

The approach into Portland Harbor is straightforward, with a well-marked channel used by large commercial and cruise ships. Navigate carefully in fog and watch out for fishing boats, frequent ferries, occasional barges, and cargo ships. The most visible landmark is Portland Head Lighthouse outside the channel entrance.

Docking, Anchorages, or Moorings

Portland (Northern Side) Fore Points Marina , 1 Marina Way, 207-517-4860, concierge@ forepointsmarina.com or on dockwa . Slips, laundry, dinghy dock (transient rate for dinghy tie-up is $30/day).

DiMillo’s Marina , 25 Long Wharf, 207-773-7632. Reserve on dockwa . Slips, fuel, laundry. Transient dinghy tie-up is $20 for three hours.

Maine Yacht Center , 100 Kensington Street, 207-842-9000, [email protected] or on dockwa . Slips, fuel, haulout, outdoor and heated indoor storage. Full-service boatyard. A short distance from downtown by car, bicycle, or Metro Bus Route 7.

Portland Ship Yard/Portland Yacht Services , 100 West Commercial Street, 207-774-1067. Full-service boatyard.

Anchorages Fish Point – approximate location 43.39.8 N/070.14.2 W. Adjacent to Fore Points Marina, outside the moorings. Be careful not to anchor between the moorings and the marina – this is an approach channel for Fore Points.

East End – approximate location 43.40.0 N/070.14.0 W. Anchor outside mooring field, and note that this area and Fish Point are exposed to frequent wakes and occasional strong winds from the easterly quadrants.

South Portland  The South Portland side of Portland Harbor has several marinas that offer docking. As you enter Portland Harbor, the Willard Beach mooring area to port has places you can anchor on a settled night but no facilities. Just beyond the Spring Point Lighthouse and breakwater are two marinas, Spring Point (reservations on dockwa ), (207) 767-3254 , and Breakwater , which may well have dock space. Spring Point and Breakwater Marinas are both owned by Port Harbor Marine. Continuing around Bug Light, there is Sunset Marina (reservations on dockwa  or VHF Channel 9/12 or 16; phone 207-767-4729) and the Centerboard Yacht Club , limited space for boats up to 36 feet, drawing less than 6 feet; no reservations (first come/first served), VHF Channel 68.

From any of these locations, a well-powered dinghy can run across to the Portland shore and the docks as noted below in Getting Ashore. Note, however, that this crosses all the commercial, ferry, and recreational traffic in the harbor, so pay attention!

MORE BOAT AMENITIES

Chandleries: In addition to the marinas, Portland has many chandleries and stores that sell boat parts. These are three good options:

Chase, Leavitt & Co , 84 Cove Street, (207) 772-6383. No longer on the waterfront (but worth a taxi ride), CL&Co specializes in marine safety consulting and equipment service and sales, including life rafts, EPIRBs, safety flares and Spinlock life vests, as well as paper charts, chart kits, navigational tools, and many books specializing in safety equipment (including life rafts), charts, and cruising guides.

Hamilton Marine , 197 Presumpscot St. Building A, (207) 774-1772. Not walking distance to the waterfront, unfortunately. Metro Bus Routes 7 and 9A/9B will get you close. Hamilton is a Maine-based chain with stores in other towns along the coast. It features equipment and supplies appropriate for local mariners, including lobster fishers.

West Marine , 127 Marginal Way, (207) 761-7600. A bit of a walk from the waterfront but doable, or take Metro Bus Route 8.

Hardware store:

Maine Hardware , Union Station Plaza Shopping Center, 274 John Street, (207) 773-5604; take Metro Bus Route 1 along Congress Street.

Laundromats:

Lookin’ Good Laundromat , 292 Congress St., (207) 772-6676

Sign describing color coded dock meanings.

1) A small public dock, at the end of State Pier next to the Casco Bay Ferry Terminal (at 43˚ 39.433′ N, 070˚ 14.969′ W), may be used for pick-up, drop-off, and short-term, less than two-hour tie-up at the very end of the pier (but not at the float by the seawall).

2) Fore Points Marina offers dinghy tie-ups for $30/day.

3) East End Beach boat launch permits 15-minute pick-up and drop-off.

4.) DiMillos offers temporary dock tie-up on a space available basis (including dinghies). Cost is $20 for 3 hours for boats under 35′, $40 for 3 hours for boats over 35′. Contact the marina.

Water taxi (though it may not be immediately available): 1) Fogg’s Water Taxi , (207) 415-8493 or 2) Portland Sea Taxi , (207) 879-2562

Alternatively, consider sailing north (approximately 5 miles) to Falmouth Foreside  for docking, mooring, or anchoring options; then call a taxi for the short drive to Portland. 207 Taxi : (207) 774-2255. Uber and Lyft also operate in Portland.

Provisioning

There are way too many places to list them all. The following are some of our favorites. All are walkable to the waterfront, although some are a bit of a hike.

The Food Coop, Harbor Fish, Micucci, and Standard Baking are not far from Fore Points. Metro Bus Route 8 (the Peninsula Loop) goes from the waterfront to Hannaford, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods:

Portland has become a “foodie” mecca with many dining options; too many to list here. The best way to navigate the ever-changing Portland food scene, which includes dine-in and take-out restaurants as well as food trucks, is to go to:

Portland Food Map , both comprehensive and up-to-date; and

Truckalico , an awesome app that lists the location of multiple food trucks in real-time.

Also, check out the many breweries, distilleries, fermenters, meaderies, kombucheries, and cider shops scattered throughout the city, especially in the East Bayside and Washington Avenue neighborhoods. Follow this link for a map of the area: deanssweets.com/eastbayside/

big yacht in portland maine

The Eleanor Hawkes is a Friendship sloop, a beautiful traditional-style sailboat that glides effortlessly over the water. With space for up to 6 guests , this is the most private sail you can get in Portland shy of owning a boat!

The Eleanor Hawkes is based on the Friendship sloop, also known as a Muscongus Bay sloop or lobster sloop, which is a traditional style of gaff-rigged sloop that originated in Friendship, Maine around 1880. Fishermen in Friendship and neighboring Bremen collectively originated the design, one influenced by the fishing sailboats of Gloucester, Massachusetts, particularly the schooner Fredonia of 1889.

Although familiar as a pleasure craft today, the Friendship sloop was the traditional fishing boat used off the coast of Maine, especially for lobstering, until the introduction of the gasoline engine early in the 20th century. Friendship-area boat builder Wilbur A. Morse produced many examples from the 1880s and into the early 1900s.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

Maine’s pristine pine forests and beautiful rugged coastline dotted with islands, iconic lighthouses, quaint towns, lobster shacks, and deep maritime history have long been an attraction to visitors and boaters. The south coast beach towns are popular summer vacation spots, offering outdoor recreation—beaches, boating, sailing, fishing, hiking along with dining, shopping, cultural attractions, and family fun activities. Mt Katahdin in Baxter’s State Park (loaded with moose) is an endpoint of the famed Appalachian Trail. Acadia National Park with its thick pine forests, granite and spruce islands, is the only national park in the New England region and one of the nation’s most visited with 3.5 million visits annually. Maine is the easternmost state of the United States, and the northeastern most of the 50 contiguous states. Maine is the largest of the New England states and is bordered on the west by New Hampshire, the Canadian provinces of Quebec on northwest and New Brunswick on Northeast. The Gulf of Maine and Atlantic Ocean are to southeast.

Prior to statehood, Maine was primarily agricultural and today is the #1 US producer of wild lowbush blueberries and a major producer of potatoes, apples, maple syrup and sweet corn, along with dairy products and chicken eggs. And of course, lobster, oysters, seaweed, and other seafood are available fresh from the sea. Since the 1980s, Maine has seen a surge in small scale vegetable specialty farms (such as organic) and gardens—kickstarted by the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Assoc., fueling the farm-to-table restaurant trend and attracting talented chefs from all over that have elevated the city of Portland to “America’s Foodiest Small Town” (Bon Appetit magazine). The once rundown Portland harbor front, Old Port is now the prime cobblestoned downtown location of 5-star bistros, coffee shops, trendy art scene, boutiques, and other cultural attractions in refurbished Federal-style buildings. Portland has the most restaurants per capita than any other US city, from nationally acclaimed restaurants to pubs in restored historic buildings to street food and lobster shacks. It is also a major hub for Maine’s fishing and seafood industries.

Portland is also a coffee town, ranked among the Top 10 Coffee Cities in America, with many neighborhood coffee shops sourcing and roasting their own beans. Tandem Coffee is one of the top coffee roasters in Maine; Coffee By Design (since 1994) is Roasting Magazine’s 2020 Roaster of the Year in the entire nation. Other notable coffee shops are Bard Coffee, Speckled Ax, Arabica Coffee House, Baristas & Bites, Little Woodfords, and more. Greater Portland area is known for its craft beers and its many pubs, microbreweries, wine bars, taverns. The organic grain grown in Maine led to the boom in craft beer, especially in Portland. Bissell Brothers Brewing developed the New England style IPA and was a major influence on the craft industry and IPA brewing.

Greater Portland and Casco Bay is Maine’s largest metro area stretching from Casco Bay in east to Sebago Lake in west, south to Scarborough and north to Freeport. Portland is a quaint, yet sophisticated, walkable city of cobblestone streets overflowing with cultural history, arts, award-winning chefs and cuisine. It once rivaled New York and Boston in the early 19th century with professional theater; today professional theater has revived, along with ballet, and musical performances. The Portland Arts District features galleries, antique shops, studios, and performance venues along Congress Street.

The Acadia and Downeast area has a long heritage of early (1604) French settlers and even today French and English are listed as Maine’s languages. World-famous Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island and Frenchman’s Bay, the gateway to Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain, which encompasses over 46,000 acres along with several towns and villages, miles of shoreline, 125 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. With its amazing coastal beauty, Bar Harbor was the vacation destination in the 19th century for the wealthy elite from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and elsewhere, such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Morgans, and Henry Ford, who built luxurious summer homes on the island. Bar Harbor is the birthplace of Nelson Rockefeller. His father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. designed and built the 45 miles of scenic carriage roads on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park from 1913-1940 using local granite for the crushed stone roadbeds, large coping stones, and bridges. Other carriage road features are the signposts and gate lodges. Bar Harbor continues as a haven for the rich and famous to this day and a popular tourist destination.

Deep water (110-175ft) Somes Sound is a fjard (similar to a fjord) that extends into Mount Desert Island dividing it in two. Its depth allows large ships to navigate nearly its entire length, making it an ideal location for boat builders, such as Hinckley Yachts. Maine has an enduring tradition of shipbuilding. Its shipyards in the 18th and 19th centuries produced the wooden sailing ships (sloops, schooners, brigs, brigantines, barks, Down Easters) used to transport cargo or passengers overseas and were a major source of Maine’s economy. When the wooden sailing ship market declined after the Civil War, shipyards in Maine continued building the cargo transporting square-rigged Down Easter deep sea sailing ships, which had economic advantages (deeper holds, simpler to sail) over the clipper ships, until around 1902. Steamships and steel vessels replaced the commercial wooden sailing ships in late 19th – early 20th centuries. Pennellville Historic District in Brunswick, Maine features the shipyard owned by the Pennell family. Other shipbuilding families of that era were the Skolfields and the Morses.

Another type of Downeast boat style emerged in the latter 20th century in Maine based on the fast lobster boats built by Will Frost in the 1920s in Jonesport, Maine. Will Frost, whose father and grandfather built square-rigged Down Easters, developed the semi-displacement hull at the time fishing boats were transitioning from sail to power. Engines were not very powerful back then, so Will designed the hull to be extremely efficient, able to get up on plane and go fast by using air induction vents that allowed air to flow through the bottom, providing an air cushion lift out of the water, similar in principle to the stepped hull design of high-performance boats today. Will Frost’s torpedo stern Redwing is considered the origin of modern Maine lobster boats. The “Jonesporters” as they came to be known, were characterized by long sweeping sheer forward and low aft freeboard, high bow, narrow beam, square stern (later), pilothouse and low-slung cabin positioned just a bit forward of amidships for a low center of gravity. This kept windage low, minimizing roll in heavy seas. Built strong and rugged for hauling lobster pots and nets over the side onto the large aft deck area and to get home safely.

These qualities of durability, efficiency, and the pretty lines of these speedy Downeast lobster boats popularized the style for recreational cruising boats. Today there are many Downeast boat builders, as this classic “lobster boat”design continues to be in great demand. Some notable Maine builders include Hinckley Yachts, Downeast Custom Boats, Wesmac Custom Boats, SW Boatworks (Calvin Beal Boats), Wilbur Yachts, Lowell Brothers (Marine Lobster Boats), Atlantic Boat Company (Duffy), Holland, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Company, and Northern Bay. Some boaters argue that Boothbay Harbor is truly where the Maine coast begins for cruising, as Boothbay is a boater’s bliss with inviting inlets, harbors, and passages, dramatic coastal landscape, granite shoals, and seals and porpoises frolicking in the bays. Historic lighthouses mark harbor entrances. Maine is very welcoming with many marinas and moorings available for cruising boaters. Here are just a few notable marinas of many; check Dockwa.com for more marina information.

Fore Points Marina in Portland accommodates all size vessels (630 ft max. This Small Town in Maine Has One of the Best Beaches in the Country and a Nearly 100-year-old Lobster Restaurant — How to Visit

Here's how to plan the perfect trip to Ogunquit, with the help of a local.

Best Things to Do

Best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Maine is chock-full of quaint coastal towns , giving travelers plenty of appealing vacation prospects. Even with so many delightful options, it’s hard to compete with Ogunquit. Situated on the state’s southern coast, it’s a charming resort destination with a vibrant arts scene, great restaurants (Maine-style lobster roll, anyone?), and one of the best beaches in the country.

Hydrangeas bloom outside New England-style cottages and Adirondack chairs sit on freshly mowed lawns. The quaint downtown has many independent shops and some terrific places to eat. Everything feels casual and easygoing. Relaxed but far from sleepy, it boasts a few lively bars.

Tourism peaks in July and August. Expect pleasant weather that’s marked by warm, sunny days and nights that often call for a light sweater. Even in the busy height of summer, Ogunquit isn’t overrun with out-of-towners. You can still find space to stake an umbrella on the sand and an open table for dinner without needing to book ahead.

Beyond the beautiful scenery, culture, and fresh seafood, the people make Ogunquit special. “Locals are warm and friendly and a true testament to Maine hospitality,” says Katie Keene, general manager of The Dunes on the Waterfront.

Whether you’re keen to pack in one last summer trip or want to experience autumnal splendor, use this guide to plan the perfect getaway to Ogunquit.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Go for a stroll along Marginal Way.
  • Roll out a towel on Ogunquit Beach.
  • Grab a drink and sing along at The Front Porch’s piano bar.
  • See a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse.
  • Shop in Perkins Cove.

Best Hotels & Resorts

The dunes on the waterfront.

The Dunes on the Waterfront recently underwent a complete refurbishment, turning the beloved but tired old lodging into the most stylish stay in town. Flower-framed cottages are appointed with pretty upholstery, scores of antiques, and screened porches. A heated outdoor pool, rowboats, lawn games, beach cruisers, and a fire pit for nightly s’mores add to the blissfully nostalgic atmosphere.

The Beachmere Inn

The Beachmere Inn earns accolades for its excellent location that provides direct access to Marginal Way. Rooms and suites are tucked inside five different buildings, including a Victorian beauty dating back to 1897. Mornings start with lobster Benedict for breakfast. Afternoons unfold while sitting in the Adirondack chairs dotting the ocean-view lawns and terraces.

The Blue Shutters Inn and Studios

The Blue Shutters Inn and Studios is a top-rated adults-only property with two distinctive accommodation options: cozy rooms with fireplaces and efficiency-style apartments. The staff is friendly and helpful. Guests also give the gourmet breakfast and happy hour with drinks and bites high marks.

The Admiral's Inn

With two outdoor pools, a hot tub, and a patio bar with a fire pit, The Admiral's Inn goes all in on summer vacation vibes. The resort-style hotel has reasonable rates and a variety of room types, so it’s great for families, couples, or groups of friends. It’s also centrally located, within walking distance of town.

The Colonial Inn

Visitors have hunkered down at The Colonial Inn for more than a century. The current iteration of the storied respite offers refreshed rooms and plenty of modern amenities — among them a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, a fire pit, lawn games, and a wraparound porch — but it still retains a sense of history and the type of ease you don’t often find these days.

Marginal Way

A must-do in any season (as long as the weather cooperates), Marginal Way is a 1.5-mile coastal walking path that connects the main village of Ogunquit to Perkins Cove. Expansive ocean views, rugged cliffs, shallow beaches, and a lighthouse are the highlights.

Ogunquit Beach

Frequently ranked among the best beaches in the country , Ogunquit Beach looks like a postcard with white sand, grassy dunes, and Atlantic Ocean waves. It's dotted with umbrellas in the summer and virtually empty in the off-season. Keene recommends rising early and watching the sunrise over the water.

Ogunquit Playhouse

“Seeing a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse is a must-do on a summer trip to Ogunquit,” says Keene. “The renowned theater puts on Broadway-style performances during peak season, which makes for a fun evening.”

Perkins Cove

Carve out some time to walk around Perkins Cove , an idyllic waterfront area known for its artisan boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and classic New England architecture. Don’t forget to stop for a photo op in front of the historic wooden drawbridge.

Ogunquit Museum of American Art

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art boasts an impressive collection of contemporary works spread across its galleries and sculpture garden. It also hosts a series of Tuesday Talks and morning yoga classes in the summer.

Ogunquit Lobster Pound

The Ogunquit Lobster Pound has been an institution for nearly 100 years. Picking out a live Maine lobster from the tank is a long-standing tradition. No surprise, it’s the most popular menu item. Be sure to save room for dessert — Keene loves the deep-dish Maine blueberry pie.

The Front Porch

“Located in downtown Ogunquit, The Front Porch is a lively restaurant and bar that brings people in for comfort food and live music,” says Keene. “Upstairs, the popular piano bar is the place to go for a few drinks and a singalong.”

Barnacle Billy's

A seasonal mainstay for more than 60 years, Barnacle Billy’s serves local seafood (the lobster roll and homemade clam chowder are fan favorites) and a signature rum punch that goes down easy. Outdoor seating and boat-studded harbor views make it the quintessential Perkins Cove lunch spot.

Big Daddy’s

There’s nothing quite like a scoop of classic vanilla or something zippy like Key lime on a warm summer day. Locally owned Big Daddy’s makes all of its ice cream in-house using the original recipe dating back to 1976. It’s nostalgia in a cup or cone.

Coastal Alchemist Corks & Cocktails

More than just a place that pours wine, beer, and spirits, Coastal Alchemist Corks & Cocktails has a unique seasonal menu, an upscale beach atmosphere, and a lovely covered patio to enjoy the fresh air. It’s also a short walk from the Ogunquit Playhouse.

While Ogunquit buzzes all summer with nice weather and festive events like Ogunquit Pride and BonAire! , tourism peaks in July and August. Outside of the high season, the fall is particularly lovely.

Travelers coming from around New England will find it easiest to drive. Rather fly than road trip? Ogunquit is about two hours from Boston Logan International Airport and 50 minutes from Portland International Jetport. While Uber and Lyft are viable options from Portland , it’s recommended to rent a car from Boston. You can also take the train. The Amtrak Downeaster stops in Wells, which is approximately 20 minutes from Ogunquit.

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

“Ogunquit is very walkable, so you don’t need a car to explore,” notes Keene. “Many visitors enjoy cruising around town on a bike. Golf cart shuttles are available. There’s also a trolley that runs seasonally.”
