International Yacht Collection (IYC) and Cape4 Yachting merge

Ft. Lauderdale-based yacht brokerage firm International Yacht Collection has merged with Greece-based Cape4 Yachting .

In mid-May, IYC brokers and agents sent a letter to clients describing the deal and anticipated changes. According to the letter, existing charter, sales and management contracts would “remain in full force and terms unaffected” and that “your core team will remain unchanged.” The letter also said that Cape4 services currently available in Europe, including shore support (yacht agency services), insurance, claims management and travel agency services, will soon be available in the United States.

IYC and Cape4 brands will run independently during the summer season, and will be integrated as of September under a “new visual corporate identity,” according to the letter.

According to several employees, the brokers, including Frank Grzeszczak and Mark Elliott, will remain with the company. IYC President Bob Saxon would not comment on his plans until Cape4 makes an official announcement. Several brokers said they were looking forward to the changes.

“It was stagnant before, but this is a huge leap forward,” Elliott said. “This is fresh blood. Cape4 is very enthusiastic and we plan to be No. 1. I’m definitely on the wagon with this. And we’ll be looking to hire new brokers with this expansion. We’ll need charter brokers, management and sales.”

One thing it likely won’t need is marketing staff. The department was cut as Cape4 expects to subcontract that work, according to an employee who asked not to be named.

“I would think that downsizing is always part of the plan, in a case like this,” said Catalina Bujor, who worked in the marketing department until her final day with IYC on May 15.

Bujor said it made sense for Cape4 to buy IYC instead of starting its own company in the U.S.

“They have bought a business with some of the most successful yacht brokers,” Bujor said.

“They are a smart company and have been doing their due diligence since the Miami show. Overall, my opinion is that the IYC brand will thrive under its new ownership. It will get a long-awaited facelift with a fresh approach in the U.S. market.”

Cape4 Yachting partner Stefanos Macrymichalos would not comment other than to say a press release detailing the merger would be issued in late May.

Founded in 2005, Cape4 has six offices in the Mediterranean including Croatia, Montenegro, Malta and Greece. It offers sales, charter, management and agency services as well as yacht insurance, according to its Web site.

Founded in 1997, IYC has offices in Ft. Lauderdale,  Palm Beach, Newport, Nassau, St. Maarten and Monaco. IYC offers yacht sales, charter, management and crew placement. Trinity Yachts bought it from Steve Hudson in June 2007.

Cabo is back!

For the first time in nearly six years, the creators of the prestigious CABO Sportfishing Yacht present an all-new version, the CABO 41. Officially introduced in February, this beautifully designed, state-of-the-art watercraft is now touring the nation in grand style and will be available for showing and sea trials at Cape Yachts at South Wharf Yacht Yard Marina in Dartmouth, MA on July 3-12, 2019.

Extraordinary boats: Cape 31

Yachting World

  • May 23, 2022

The Cape 31 is a one-design yacht originally created for racing in South Africa, which has rapidly expanded with fleets around the world. Andy Rice reports

cape 4 yachting

Thirty-foot keelboats come and go all the time. Most arrive with a short-lived fanfare, only to fade gradually out of sight and memory. Not so the Cape 31, which looks set to be the ‘must sail’ boat for the foreseeable future. With 25 boats sold into England and Ireland in little more than a year, this Mark Mills one-design seems to have hit the sweet spot.

Dave Swete is part of the small team promoting the Cape 31 out of a small office in Port Hamble in the UK. Swete is a Volvo Ocean Race veteran and the sole professional sailor on Sunrise , Tom Kneen’s Fastnet-winning JPK 11.80. Asked why the sailing world needed another 30-something keelboat, Swete replies: “I think it’s because it just ticks a lot of boxes. We believe that it’s the only class boat that’s winning on IRC and other rating systems at the moment.

“You can get this boat straight out of the box and go and win races. The Cape 31 won overall in Les Voiles de St Tropez last year, as well as a whole host of local events in the Solent.”

Whereas some 30ft keelboats might like to describe themselves as a ‘big dinghy’, Swete insists the Cape 31 is “a small keelboat”. He explains: “We can take this boat out in 25 knots wind against tide in the Solent and have a really nice day, then come back in and the boat’s in one piece, it’s not full of water. We haven’t been broaching out and nosediving all day, we’ve just been bow-up, doing 20 knots downwind and 7.5 knots upwind. It’s fair to say it’s a proper yacht.”

Working with his R&D partners KND/Sailing Performance, Mark Mills produced a hull with low freeboard and aggressive chines designed to maximise form stability in a breeze while maintaining a low wetted surface area when upright in the lighter stuff. The chine running forward to the bow helps produce the Cape 31’s distinctive bow-up attitude at speed downwind.

For some, the Cape 31’s upwind speed – even more than its electric downwind pace – is the most impressive statistic.

“The real head-turner is that this is a 30ft boat that goes upwind at a similar speed to a Performance 40. Then you turn it downwind and really put the hammer down,” says Swete.

Having previously owned a Corby-designed cruiser/racer, Lance Adams was looking for something sportier when he got into the Cape 31 class. He’d considered the J/70 but didn’t gel with it; and had watched the Fast 40 s battling around the Solent but didn’t fancy getting into what looked like an arms race. After a conversation with Swete, Adams bought a Cape 31 without ever having sailed one. “It sounded like the boat that the Solent has been needing for a while,” says Adams.

His Katabatic was the second boat into the country and Adams raced it regularly throughout 2021. One of the big attractions for Adams was the strict one-design rule. He was looking for close competition and hasn’t been disappointed. “At Cowes Week last year I think we had five different race winners after five days. It’s sensational racing.”

He also likes the fact that the boat goes, in his words, ‘hell for leather’ downwind. “We peaked at 21 knots last season but 2021 was quite a light year for wind. I think the boat has the potential to go quite a bit faster.”

Created for the Cape

The origins of the Cape 31 stem from Cape Town, a sailing venue where prolific Maxi yacht owner Sir Irvine Laidlaw likes to spend time. Laidlaw wanted a new design that could be sailed in the famous ‘Cape doctor’ winds and swell off Cape Town. “His concept was for a ‘no holds barred’ 30-footer for delivering maximum fun,” explains Swete. “It certainly wasn’t designed to be an IRC weapon. It was designed simply to be the best boat it could be in Cape Town, which actually transferred nicely over to the Solent with the wind against tide and the rough conditions we can get here.”

Extraordinary Boats: the new 11th Hour Racing IMOCA 60

The Cape 31 is primarily aimed at round the cans racing, or the occasional long distance day race, such as the Round the Island Race . “We’ve got a 90-mile Cannonball Run planned from Antigua to St Maarten,” Swete adds.

Mark Mills was commissioned to design the boat back in 2017, and although initially successful in South Africa, it took a couple of years for it to gain a wider reputation. “Some international teams had been invited down to Cape Town to race the boat which had gone fairly well,” recalls Swete. “It wasn’t until we brought the boat over [to the UK] and started winning races on IRC that it got noticed properly, and that’s when things really kicked off.”

cape 4 yachting

The Cape 31s have a crew weight limit of 595kg, which usually translates to seven on board, with an owner-driver rule and no more than three professionals. Photo: Rick Tomlinson/Cape 31 Class

The centre of gravity of the Cape 31 class has now shifted firmly to the UK, although its handicap performance has given other owners the courage to order boats in different parts of the world.

“The class is very much established in the Solent now, to the point where we’re attracting international teams over here. We’ve got an American team flying in for our local regattas, and a Dutch team too. But we’ll start travelling as a class soon. Next year we’ll travel to the Caribbean, and we’re looking to get some racing going in the Bay of Palma. There’s a fleet starting up in Australia, and the beauty of these boats is they go in a container.”

Cape 31 – owner-friendly

Aside from the high-performance and handicap appeal of the boat, Swete and his partner, Dave Bartholomew, have pushed hard to establish a strong class ethos that focuses on having fun first and foremost. It’s an owner-driver class with a maximum of three pro sailors permitted on the crew, although Swete encourages teams to sail with fewer.

“We’re all about matching the fun on the water with fun off the water, and we’ve taken it back to the yacht clubs.”

Keeping it fun includes avoiding an arms race where teams might be tempted to tweak their boats up to – or beyond – the limits of the class rule. Swete says there is a strong policy in place to keep that in check, and he’s not afraid of chasing the wrong sort of owner out of the fleet if it threatens the overall ecosystem of good, clean Corinthian fun and sportsmanship.

“We are investing in keeping people in line. We have a rules guy, Mike Richards, who’s an IRC measurer. He’s been involved in everything from Swan 45s to Fast 40s, Farr 40s and Mumm 30s. We got him involved very early on, because it can sneak in, where people want to take advantage of a new class and loopholes.”

cape 4 yachting

Swete acknowledges that launching a new class is in some ways the easy part. The greater challenge could come in maintaining longevity well beyond the honeymoon period that the Cape 31 is currently enjoying. “It’s about looking after the bottom third of the fleet and keeping them happy. We don’t really want teams to all sail with three pros. When you see team coach boats out on the water, I think that’s a very bad sign. It’s not something we’ve banned, but it’s highly discouraged.”

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Cape Town

Choosing the right vessel for your sailing adventure in Cape Town is an essential part of the planning process, and Yachting.Rent is here to help you make the best choice. We offer a range of options, including sailing boats and catamarans, each with their own unique features and advantages.

Sailing boats are an excellent choice for those who desire a traditional sailing experience. These vessels offer a smooth ride, even in choppy waters, making them ideal for longer voyages along the Cape’s breathtaking coastline. Whether you’re an experienced sailor wishing to take the helm yourself, or prefer the services of our skilled skippers, a sailing boat promises a sense of adventure and connection to the sea. The yachts in our fleet range from compact and sporty vessels, perfect for couples or small groups, to larger, luxury models, well-suited for family charters or corporate events.

On the other hand, catamarans are gaining popularity for their stability, spaciousness, and speed. With twin hulls providing excellent balance, catamarans ensure a comfortable and stable trip, making them particularly suitable for families with children or those prone to seasickness. The larger deck space and cabins in a catamaran allow for maximum comfort and relaxation, with plenty of room for sunbathing, dining, or simply enjoying the stunning views of Cape Town’s coastline. Catamarans also have a shallow draft, making them perfect for exploring hidden coves and mooring in shallow bays, where other boats may not be able to venture.

No matter the vessel you choose, safety is our top priority. All our sailing boats and catamarans are fully equipped with safety gear and navigational equipment, meeting international safety standards. They also come with all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable journey, from well-equipped galleys to spacious lounging areas.

In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat or a catamaran ultimately depends on your personal preference, the size of your group, and the kind of sailing experience you wish to have. Our team at Yachting.Rent is committed to assisting you in making the best choice for your dream sailing adventure in Cape Town.

Cape Cod Yacht Charters

Cape cod yacht charters offer it all: excellent food, charming villages, nature preserves and parks, and sandy beaches.

Cape Cod is one of America’s most revered yachting destinations. Known for its superb fishing, legendary whale watching, and cultural enclaves, a yacht charter in Cape Cod offers a little something for everyone.

While exploring Cape Cod on your luxury yacht charter, be sure to check out the peninsula’s artist camps and beach towns. Favorites like Provincetown – at the northern-most tip – and Hyannis draw visitors to their white-sand beaches, classic seafood restaurants, and historical points of interest. Plus, there’s much to explore via boat. Cape Cod Bay is one of America’s most desirable sport fishing and whale watching destinations in New England , known for regular summer displays of breaching humpbacks and abundance of striped bass, bluefin tuna, and bluefish.

Most Charming Cities and Towns on Cape Cod

Hyannis Cape Cod

  • Provincetown

Provincetown lies at the northern end of Cape Cod, nearly 60 miles out to sea. The city is revered for its historic center, known for its charming shops, festivals and events (Carnival is in August), and white-sand beaches. Provincetown is also one of America’s oldest artist colonies; you’ll find numerous galleries and artisan markets to explore.

Hyannis may be best known as the site of the Kennedy family compound. You’ll notice that influence today; the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum and John F. Kennedy Memorial are both here. Yet, beyond its history, Hyannis offers plenty to explore so make sure you make it a stop on your Cape Cod yacht charter. Start on Main Street, where you’ll find must-visit restaurants and shops like Cape Cod Beer, or soak up the sun at Kalmus Beach.

Every year, Chatham seems to land on lists of America’s favorite beach towns, and that makes perfect sense. The village is home to some of the Cape’s most beautiful beaches. Check out Chatham Lighthouse Beach, which sits in the shadow of the namesake lighthouse. Harding’s Beach is another favorite and perfect for swimming (as it sits on the calmer waters of Nantucket Sound).

Falmouth may be the Cape’s second-largest town, but yet, Falmouth feels more rural than other villages on Cape Cod. As such, it’s a perfect destination for getting outdoors. Take to Shining Sea Bikeway, a 10-mile path, that offers incredible views of the dunes. Also, check out the Woods Hole Science Aquarium and Lambert’s Cove Beach.

Harwich is a quintessential yachting destination. Thanks to its three sheltered harbors on Nantucket Sound, it’s a favorite destination for exploring the Cape, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. And throughout the summer, the town’s legendary yacht clubs host exclusive regattas like the Sails Around the Cape in August.

Cape Cod Yacht Charters – Things to See & Do

Explore cape cod national seashore.

Featuring nearly 50 miles of dune-lined beaches, a mix of salt marshes and ponds, and beautiful rolling hills, the Cape Cod National Seashore is a tranquil natural destination. Escape the crowds here, and take hikes along the dunes (there are 12 walking trails). Or take to one of three bike trails through the park.

Visit Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge

Explore Cape Cod’s natural history at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge . The park is home to America’s largest grey seal population, dozens of bird species (including five endangered species), and several amazing hiking trails, the park is the perfect place to unwind. One must-see sight: Monomoy Lighthouse is one of the Cape’s most beautiful, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Experience the Pilgrim Monument

The Pilgrim’s landed first on Cape Cod in Provincetown, before landing on the mainland. And in Provincetown, you’ll find a beautiful monument and museum celebrating the area’s history. Make sure you visit the monument while on your yacht charter in Cape Cod. Climb the steps to the top of the 252-foot granite monument for amazing views of Provincetown’s historic waterfront.

Visit Cape Cod’s Historic Lighthouses

Cape Cod is home to more than a dozen postcard-worthy lighthouses, which continue to guide yachts to this day. Take a guided tour of any one of the historic lighthouses and climb to the top for amazing views. The Nauset Light is one of the Cape’s most beautiful, which offers free tours throughout the summer. And the Chatham Lighthouse is another must-see, which sits on an incredible beach.

Cape Liberty cruise port: A guide to cruising from New Jersey

Melissa Klurman

The first thing you'll notice about the Cape Liberty cruise port is the views: Situated on the Hudson River in New Jersey across from New York City, the port has spectacular skyline panoramas of Manhattan and unimpeded views of the Statue of Liberty. In fact, sailing out of Cape Liberty will bring you face-to-face (OK, face-to-toes) with Lady Liberty when you sail through the harbor.

Cape Liberty is a hub for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. From here, ships from those two lines sail to the Bahamas , Bermuda , Caribbean , Canada and New England and beyond.

Note that although Cape Liberty is often referred to as "New York" on some cruise-selling websites, it is squarely on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, in Bayonne. (It's a quirk of the region that many popular things in New Jersey are labeled as "New York" — for example, both the New York Jets and the New York Giants play their home games at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.)

Although Cape Liberty is the ideal place to set sail from if you're already based in the nearby Tri-State region (New York/New Jersey/Connecticut), Pennsylvania or other East Coast locations, the port is also easy to get to from Newark International Airport (EWR) just 10 miles away. Fly in early and you'll find plenty of points hotels for a pre- or postcruise stay nearby, too.

Plus, you'll be just across the Hudson River from New York City , making it easy to add a visit to the Big Apple to your cruise itinerary.

Airports near Cape Liberty cruise port

cape 4 yachting

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is the closest airport to the Cape Liberty cruise port. It's 10 miles away and about a 20-minute drive, depending on traffic.

While LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is 22 miles away and John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is 32 miles from Bayonne, the ride to Cape Liberty cruise port will take a minimum of one hour, and possibly up to two hours, from either airport depending on traffic, since you'll need to either traverse or circumnavigate Manhattan.

There is no direct public transportation from any of the three area airports to the cruise port.

EWR is a United Airlines hub and offers a plethora of flights from around the country on the carrier into Newark daily. Other domestic carriers that fly into EWR are Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Sun Country and Spirit Airlines.

If you want to fly with Southwest, you will have to choose LGA, since the carrier consolidated all of its New York City gates at that airport. Other domestic airlines at LGA are Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit, United Airlines and the American Shuttle.

JFK is the farthest airport from Bayonne and Cape Liberty, but it has the largest number of carriers, 70 in all, and is a hub for both American and Delta. Other domestic carriers are Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Sun Country Airlines and WestJet.

Since outbound flight times don't always line up perfectly with your cruise line's disembarkation time, you might find yourself with time to kill at the airport, so make sure you carry a credit card with airport lounge access as a benefit. For EWR, it's especially helpful to carry a United branded card that offers lounge access: Since United is terminal C's sole occupant, the lounge options are limited to United Clubs and the Polaris Lounge . The other domestic terminal, A, offers a Delta Lounge as well as an AA Admiral's Club. The airport does not have any lounges accessible with Priority Pass .

How to get to the Cape Liberty cruise port

cape 4 yachting

Whether you're coming to the cruise port from the airport or a nearby hotel, you'll find several transportation options available. What you won't find are cruise-line-organized shuttles from the airport to the Cape Liberty cruise port.

Hotel shuttles

A few select Hilton hotels near EWR offer free shuttle service to the port. Note, however, that overnight parking at these hotels will incur a fee.

Limos and private car transfers

There are myriad options for limos and private cars in the New York/New Jersey metro area. One of the most popular and easiest to remember is the Dial 7 car and limousine service, the number for which is 1-212-777-7777.

Blacklane is another good option for private transfers. Expect to pay between $130 from EWR to around $330 from JFK for a private car or limousine transfer.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Hailing a taxi to take you to Cape Liberty from EWR is simple. Taxi stands are on the arrival (ground) level of the airport (outside baggage claim).

You'll pay by the meter. The rate is $4 for the first 1/8 mile then $0.65 for each additional 1/8 mile. Waiting time is $0.65 per minute. There's a $1 per bag surcharge for luggage put in the trunk and a $1.75 fee for originating from the airport. The average fare from Newark Airport to the Cape Liberty cruise port is $40.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are also an option.

UberX can run around $25 to $35, and UberXL around $35 to $45, depending on the time of day. Premier and Premier SUV cars can run around $75 to $90. All prices can vary during traffic or high-demand times. The Uber/Lyft ride from LGA or JFK will be much more expensive due both to distance and interstate tolls (about $40): Expect prices starting at $120 for UberX and $150 for UberXL.

Public transportation

A few forms of public transportation in New Jersey run to Bayonne, but none will get you closer than 2 miles from the cruise port.

NJ Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and PATH: Traveling from Jersey City or Hoboken, New Jersey, take the light rail to the 34th Street stop in Bayonne. One-way tickets are $2.25. After you disembark, you will need to call a cab/Uber/Lyft to take you the last 2 miles to the cruise port. If you are coming from New York City, take the PATH train that runs from New York to Jersey City and Hoboken (also $2.25) and then connect to the light rail.

Bus: From the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City, take the NJ Transit 119 bus to Bayonne. Tickets cost $6. The bus travels along Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne and stops on request every three blocks. The closest point to the cruise port is 33rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard. From here, you can either call a Bayonne cab company or get an Uber/Lyft to drive you to the cruise port, which is about three miles east of Kennedy Boulevard.

Cape Liberty cruise port parking

On-site parking.

Cruisers can find ample, on-site parking at Cape Liberty adjacent to the terminal. No reservations are necessary, and parking is guaranteed. Parking fees are $30 per day, including tax.

Park-and-cruise

Park2Go (Cape Liberty Cruise Port) offers parking in an indoor valet garage for $20 a day and in an outdoor valet lot for $18. A free shuttle service runs to and from Cape Liberty every 30 to 45 minutes from 6 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. seven days a week. Reservations should be made on the website prior to arrival.

Hotels near Cape Liberty cruise port

cape 4 yachting

A number of points hotels are within easy reach of Cape Liberty. Look for your preferred brands by Newark Airport and in Jersey City (7 miles north of the cruise port) and Hoboken (9 miles north of the cruise port). If you plan on staying in the area longer, or want to explore New York City, then you might want to base yourself in Manhattan. (If you choose this precruise option, leave plenty of time to get to the cruise port because there is no direct transportation or shuttle from points in the city to Cape Liberty cruise port.)

Your choice of hotel and location will depend on how long you're staying in the area, what you'd like to see while you're in town and how many hotel points you have to spend.

Hilton hotels near Cape Liberty cruise port

Chocolate chip cookies? Yes, please! The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Jersey City (from 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night) doesn't just deliver on the fresh-baked treats; it's also in a prime location to walk to nearby Newport Centre mall and hop on the PATH train at Newport.

Hampton Inn & Suites Newark Airport Elizabeth (from 40,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is about a five-minute drive from EWR and 20 minutes from Cape Liberty and is one of the few hotels that offers a shuttle to the cruise port. (The shuttle is free, but parking at the hotel is $20 per night.) The chain's free breakfast is a great way to start the day; it'll hold you over until you get on the ship and can enjoy a leisurely lunch before sailaway.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Newark Airport (from 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night) also offers a free shuttle to Cape Liberty and is similarly located about 11 miles (a 20-minute ride) from Cape Liberty and within a 5- to 10-minute drive to EWR. Parking is $20 a night. Staying at an Embassy Suites comes with free breakfast and also a complimentary happy hour with drinks and snacks. Guests can make use of the on-site restaurant and indoor pool.

Things to do near Cape Liberty before or after your cruise

cape 4 yachting

There's plenty to do in New Jersey near Cape Liberty if you want to tack on some time before or after your cruise. Here are some top options nearby.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

You'll get a view of the Statue of Liberty as soon as you arrive at Cape Liberty. But you can see her even closer, and go all the way up to the crown inside, by purchasing tickets for a Statue City Cruise through the National Parks Service. This ticket will also allow you to visit Ellis Island and the National Museum of Immigration. Although the Statue is often associated with New York, and there is a cruise departure point downtown, it's actually faster (and usually much less crowded) to visit from the New Jersey launch point in Jersey City at Liberty State Park, which is about 6 miles from Cape Liberty.

Liberty Science Center and Liberty State Park

Liberty State Park is also a fun place to explore on its own. It features restaurants with water and New York City skyline views, bike and walking paths, sprawling playgrounds and a fabulous interactive science museum, Liberty Science Center, that could easily fill a whole day.

American Dream

About 15 miles north of Cape Liberty in East Rutherford is American Dream, the second-largest shopping and entertainment complex in the United States. (The first is its older sister, Minnesota's Mall of America.) In addition to shopping and myriad places to eat, this never-dull destination contains the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park, the DreamWorks Water Park, an ice skating rink, an aquarium and even an indoor ski slope .

New York City Museums

New York City is at your fingertips when you're visiting Cape Liberty. It's especially easy to reach attractions in Lower Manhattan and the West Side using the PATH transportation system. Walking distance from the Christopher Street PATH station, the Whitney Museum of American Art (99 Gansevoort St.) is a popular choice for its cutting-edge art exhibits as well as its Hudson River views. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum pays tribute to the victims of 9/11 and is located near the World Trade Center PATH station (180 Greenwich St.).

For the best of 20th-century art, utilize the subway to head uptown to the Museum of Modern Art (11 W. 53rd St.) or Guggenheim Museum (1071 5th Ave.). On the west side of Central Park is the American Museum of Natural History (200 Central Park W), a top spot for kids with a large dinosaur exhibit and starry planetarium. The east side of the park is where to find the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 5th Ave.), the largest museum in North America and home to some of the world's most impressive works of art.

Shopping near Cape Liberty cruise port

In addition to the large selection of shops at American Dream, you can find several easy-to-reach shopping centers near Cape Liberty if you need to stock up on last-minute cruise supplies. If you're staying in Jersey City or Hoboken, Newport Centre in Jersey City is easily reached by PATH train at the Newport stop. Here, you'll find an array of retail shops, such as Sephora and Macy's; a Target is located across the street. Washington Street in Hoboken has boutique shops, bookstores, bodegas and some large retailers, such as Lululemon and Athleta.

Mike lynch’s wife didn’t want to leave site of sunken sicily yacht without husband and daughter.

The wife of tech mogul Mike Lynch didn’t want to leave the scene of his sunken yacht without her husband and their teenage daughter before they were both later confirmed dead, according to a captain who helped rescue survivors during the Sicily storm.

Angela Bacares was so frantic to find her family she even hesitated getting medical help after getting out of the Bayesian during a ferocious storm that sank it, Karsten Borner told People Magazine.

“[Bacares] didn’t want to leave because her husband and her daughter were still down,” said Borner, who helped rescue the survivors after witnessing the tragedy from his own boat, the Sir Robert Baden Powell.

Borner

“She was picked up a little bit later because I asked the coast guard to take her as I thought she needed medical help. Then, over the course of the next two, three hours — [I] don’t know exactly how much later — the coast guards came and the rest of the Bayesian people went away with them.”

Lynche’s wife was among 15 people who escaped the 184-foot luxury yacht on Aug. 19 after a sudden squall of tornado-like waterspouts pummeled the superyacht, causing it to sink. Others saved included a mom and her 1-year-old baby.

It would take days to recover the bodies of the seven who died, including tech tycoon Lynch 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

Borner said he noticed the weather rapidly deteriorating around 3 a.m. when his ship and the Bayesian were the only two out anchored off the coast of Porticello in Sicily.

Mike and Hannah

“When things calmed down and the storm abated somewhat and the wind dropped a bit, we were looking around and couldn’t see the Bayesian anymore,” Borner told the magazine.

“We checked the AIS [automatic identification system], and we couldn’t see the Bayesian anymore. Two passengers and two crew members saw what looked like a whale in the water and realized afterwards it was the capsized boat,” he said.

“A moment later, I saw a triangle in the sea in a split second that the sky was lit up by lightning, and that must have been the bow of the ship while sinking over the stern.”

After witnessing the Bayesian sink, Borner and his first mate got onto a smaller boat, called a tender, and headed to where the Bayesian had been.

“We first found things floating in the water like cushions and chairs and stuff,” Borner said. “And then we saw a flickering light. This was a life raft with a light on the top. And they also waved at us with a torch.”

“So we went there, and then we found the crew and part of the passengers — 15 people in a 12-person raft, including a little baby,” he added.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

graphic of tragic yacht

Borner and his crew took in the survivors, providing first aid, dry clothes and blankets to those in the raft.

The survivors also told Borner there were other passengers still missing, which led the tender to be sent out again.

“They looked around at sea and obviously didn’t find anything,” Borner said.

divers

The other victims included the ship’s chef, Ricardo Thomas, New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda; and Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy.

The exact cause of the yacht’s sinking remains unknown, however, Italian prosecutors are probing whether the actions of Captain James Cutfield, 51, may have led to tragedy.

Under maritime law, a ship’s captain assumes full responsibility for safety of the vessel, its crew, and all passengers.
