While fans wait for word on new Tame Impala material, Kevin Parker offers-up something to tide everyone over — a deluxe edition of The Slow Rush .

The Slow Rush boxed set is due out Feb. 18, 2022 on physical and digital formats, both containing freshly-unearthed cuts, the original and remix of pre-album release “Patience,” b-sides, extended versions, and the Lil Yachty remix of “Breathe Deeper,” which drops today.

The vinyl version will be issued with transparent red LPs and alternate artwork including a 40-page booklet and The Slow Rush 2050 calendar.

“It was so amazing to work with Kevin as I’ve been a big fan since high school so it was a pleasant surprise and honor to be a part of such an incredible song,” says Lil Yachty of his extra-funky remix.

The Slow Rush dropped in February 2020, landing at No. 1 in Australia, No. 3 in the U.S. and U.K. (both career highs), and earning a string of ARIA and APRA Awards.

Global streams are north of 1.3 billion, and Tame Impala’s fourth LP scored a Grammy nomination for alternative music album.

The Western Australian production wizard also released a special lockdown cut of the album, dubbed The Slow Rush In An Imaginary Place , which Parker presented on YouTube for “all you isolators out there.”

Tame Impala is currently on the road in North America. Australia and New Zealand arena dates are booked for October 2022.

While the track may not have the complexity of a Van Gogh painting, it definitely has the vibrancy. It’s a departure from Yachty’s usual trap-heavy sound, but that’s his genius – dude can switch lanes and still out-race the pack. Don’t sleep on this one though, the magic ain’t just in the Hamptons, it’s in every verse dropped by Yachty. Our good kid, m.A.A.d respect for trying something different, and nailing it.

Don’t get it twisted: this ain’t just about the hooks. Yachty’s lyricism on this track be sliding through like a diligent student of the rap game. Peep the playful braggadocio as he flexes on his haters, showcasing a youthful swagger that’s become a staple in his discography. In talking up the best of Lil Yachty, “drive ME crazy!” is a straight up necessity. It’s that special mix of eccentricity and earworm rap that embodies the Boat persona.

This track is a testament to Yachty’s commitment to pushing boundaries and experimenting with sound, and it’s nothing short of poignant. Released in 2020, it’s an absolute flex anthem where every verse is a testament to the wealth and status of its performers. But, let’s keep it a buck, Yachty ain’t just riding coattails here. Nah, he consistently holds his own amidst his superstar collaborators, and his flow is as smooth as butter on the beat. However, this track ain’t about complex lyricism or introspective lines; it’s about commanding a vibe and Yachty does this with utmost finesse. If it’s a hyped-up atmosphere you’re after, you just can’t skip “Flex Up.” In the spectrum of Yachty’s discography, this one’s an undeniable standout.

1. Another Late Night

An intriguing display of stylistic contrast and alignment with Drake’s introspective lyricism and subdued delivery to form a fascinating counterpoint to Lil Yachty’s trademark energy and charisma. Packed with emo-trap sentimentality, this cut juggles between Drake’s dark Toronto vibes and Yachty’s ATL bravado, creating a unique hip hop blend that leaves the listener wanting more. Its commercial success not surprising; two powerhouse artists from different hip hop regions, bridging the gap. Not the most groundbreaking joint for either artist, it’s a cool reminder of the genre’s vast spectrum, y’know what I’m saying? However, one can’t shake off the feeling that Yachty could’ve tapped deeper into his playful, experimental style, and graced us with that Boat energy we love. In summary, solid track, but not peak Yachty or Drizzy.

Lil Yachty Fulfills Big Rocker Dreams

After building a career around eccentricity, Lil Yachty cranks his musical weirdness dial to the max in “Let’s Start Here,” his fifth studio album.

Released Jan. 27, the album attempts to realize the Mableton, Ga. musician’s artistic ambitions beyond his signature “bubblegum trap” sound. “Let’s Start Here” marks an unexpected departure from Yachty’s previous discography, as it forays into a blend of psychedelic rock and funk.

Yachty is no stranger to experimentation. While he is most associated with the Atlanta rap scene, Yachty’s 2021 mixtape “Michigan Boat Boy” saw him collaborate with Detroit-based artists to promote the city’s unorthodox style. That same year, Yachty joined forces with Tame Impala on a remix of “Breathe Deeper,” foreshadowing his creative trajectory.

The bombastic album opener “the BLACK seminole.” blows all expectations into smithereens. The 6:52 minute lead track begins with Yachty’s ethereal, autotuned vocals layered on top of eerie synthesizers before exploding into distorted guitar solos, impassioned drums and feature vocalist Diana Gordon’s inhuman scream-singing.

Yachty proceeds to genre-hop his way across psychedelic sounds over the course of the album. Whereas “the BLACK seminole.” mixes the intense guitar riffs of Pink Floyd with the loud, progressive rock chaos of King Crimson, “the ride-” is more reminiscent of Tame Impala, as high-pitched vocals accompany unconventional instruments; the funky bassline that drives “running out of time” contains shades of Bootsy Collins and Thundercat.

Despite these obvious influences on “Let’s Start Here,” the album still flows rather effortlessly thanks to its strong production. A supergroup of industry veterans, ranging from the Raisen brothers to Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jake Portrait and Magdalena Bay, helped maintain the album’s focus as it weaves between contrasting moods with exceptional finesse. Lush, warm chords quickly flow into stripped-down vulnerability and raw angst with great precision, imbuing each song with its own distinct character without much clashing.

Among the many talented artists featured on the album, Gordon is the clear standout, adjusting perfectly to her ever-changing role from the sweet, soulful singing in the Bee Gees-inspired “drive ME crazy!” to rage and sorrow in “IVE OFFICIALLY LOST ViSiON!!!!” Other features like MGMT’s Benjamin Goldwasser, Mac DeMarco, Daniel Caesar and Teezo Touchdown all succeed in bringing additional life to the album in their respective performances.

The genre-bending nature of the album, however, causes Yachty’s vocal performance to fall flat, especially during his more tender moments. The heavy use of autotune, though it adds an intriguing dimension to certain songs, becomes distracting in “pRETTy” and “sAy sOMETHINg” by creating an unnecessary harshness to two otherwise mellow songs. Other songs, such as “paint THE sky” and “sHouLd I B?,” begin to sound exhausting due to a lack of innovation and experimentation, and Yachty’s subpar vocals add little value to the songs’ perfunctory natures.

Thankfully, Yachty breaks up some of the more monotonous segments of the album with bouts of intense creativity. “IVE OFFICIALLY LOST ViSiON!!!!” keeps listeners off-balance by transitioning from its McDonald’s jingle-esque intro to thumping basslines that roar over Yachty and Gordon’s unsettling, intertwining vocals. “The Alchemist.” also gives listeners a strangely fun track, with its extremely fast-paced buildup shifting repeatedly into Fousheé’s slow, yet expressive, vocals.

In the same way that “the BLACK seminole.” served as a bold introduction to the album’s concept, Yachty looks to unsettle listeners once more with the ending track “REACH THE SUNSHINE.” Featured artist Daniel Caesar delivers a deceptively minimalist verse before the song crescendos to a thick wall of synths, slowly trickling back down to a hauntingly beautiful resolution that leaves the audience with an echoing chorus and a singular grand piano in the background.

“Let’s Start Here” is a testament to Yachty’s artistic maturity, a product of an intensely ambitious vision combined with an acumen for collaboration and attention to detail. The project subverts all expectations with its deliberateness, yet it still maintains Yachty’s signature playfulness as he challenges listeners with a delicious weirdness.

“Truth be told, all I ever wanted was to be respected as an artist,” Yachty said in a Twitter post shortly after the release of the album. He should be.

The album, with all of its shortcomings and flaws, is still one of the boldest musical statements in recent memory. It deserves to be celebrated as such.

And so, the self-proclaimed Lil Boat embarked on an artistic voyage, traversing a sea of rocker dreams in hopes of discovering a cove of authenticity and inventiveness.

Lil Yachty's Concrete Boys Drop New Banger "FAMILY BUSINESS"

Yachty is once again showing off the young talent on his label.

Last year, Lil Yachty launched his new label CONCRETE BOYS under Quality Control. He's already gotten to work on filling out the roster with impressive young talent and has a new compilation on the way to help show off their talents. Last year the label dropped "MO JAMS" which came with the announcement of the upcoming compilation tape, even though the song isn't expected to appear on it. But now were finally getting a taste of some of Yachty's artists.

Lil Yachty himself is joined by CAMO and KARRAHBOOO on the absolute banger of a new song "FAMILY BUSINESS." The track also comes with an accompanying music video that is heavily stylized. It featured the various label members in matching baggy red shirts and big jeans in a variety of locations like a living room and outside a gas station. The description for the song also includes a link to pre-order the upcoming full label compilation, which also won't include this new song. It officially confirms that the album will drop pretty soon, hitting streaming on April 5.

Lil Yachty Launches Concrete Rekordz With Quality Control/HYBE, Shares New Single Off Upcoming Compilation Album

Lil Yachty is officially running the show with a new venture under his belt, Concrete Rekordz.

The rapper, who once said "hip-hop is in a terrible place," is bringing some new stars into the genre, including Karrahbooo, DC2TRILL, Draft Day, and Camo!. The artists will also appear on Concrete Rekordz compilation album It’s Us Volume 1, scheduled to release on April 5. The artists were first introduced during Yachty's Field Trip Tour last year, which continues for the European leg this spring.

In addition to the news, Concrete Rekordz, also known as Concrete Boys, dropped a new single, "Family Business."

"Yachty has always had profound vision since the day we met and to see him take his curatorial magic and expand it to discover and enhance other artists is exciting to me," stated Quality Control Music COO and co-founder Kevin “Coach K” Lee in press materials.

“I’m excited to see Yachty step into the role of executive alongside being one of the most formidable creatives in the world with such an eye for talent," added QC CEO and co-founder Pierre “P” Thomas. "Karrahbooo is a star and they are all going to be the new wave of cool that can bring something different to the culture that is so badly needed.”
