Ship shape: 5 of the world’s most spectacular royal yachts

The Dannebrog

This Danish royal yacht serves as an official and private residence for the Danish Queen and other members of the royal family when they are on summer cruises in home waters or on official visits overseas. Made in the naval work yard Orlogsvaerftet, Copenhagen, in 1931, the ship was baptised by Queen Alexandrine, the wife of King Christian X. The yacht has a rich history, with many decades of royalty aboard. King Frederick IX is known to have taken his showers on the boat's bridge, hosed down by a member of his team. It has been anchored in almost every port in Denmark, as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and all the way to the coastline of the US; training around 30 Danish naval conscripts every year. Based on the design of the floating palaces of the XIX century, the Dannebrog is more than just a boat.

The largest privately owned super yacht in the world, this 180-metre vessel was built for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, for use as a day boat to reach his favourite diving grounds. The boat can hold 36 guests and as many as 80 crew members - it also includes a gym, pool and a special ‘golf training room’. It is reported to have cost the sovereign approximately 600 million dollars. Filled with luxury, the engineers apparently worked to ensure that there is as little turbulence as possible, so that the chandeliers don’t tinkle at sea. Its record is soon to be beaten by a new yacht: the REV Ocean. A vessel which, at 183 metres, was designed by Norwegian millionaire Kjell Inge Rokke, and has been created to clean the ocean floors.

HMY Britannia

HMS Britannia

Built in 1953 for the late Queen Elizabeth II (who was crowned that same year), after 44 years of service the HMS Britannia was decommissioned and is now on display in Edinburgh. The vast and lavishly designed yacht has sailed over one million miles, accommodating 968 official royal visits. The regal vessel was once described by Queen Elizabeth as ‘the one place where I can truly relax’. The boat boasts dining rooms adorned with gifts from around the world, including a whale rib found by her husband on a beach, as well as a sun lounge with furniture chosen by the queen, and a garage built to house the royal Rolls-Royce. Sir Winston Churchill, Boris Yeltsin, Rajiv Gandhi and Nelson Mandela are among those who have joined the Queen on board over the years. Four royal honeymoons have also taken place aboard, including King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales's 16-day trip to the Mediterranean in 1981.

Le Norge is the pride of the Norwegian royal family, dating back to 1947. In 1905, after the Norwegians became independent from Sweden, they chose Prince Carl of Denmark as their monarch, proposing to him the yacht on his appointment. However, due to the difficult economic situation in Norway after the dissolution of the union with Sweden, King Haakon VII (formerly Prince Carl) did not call upon the Government to provide a yacht. Instead, the yacht was given as a gift from the people of Norway to their king decades later, purchased after the spread of a nationwide collection effort. The ship, which measures 80 metres in length is maintained by the Royal Norwegian Navy and sets sail during the summer months. It suffered a violent fire in 1985 while under maintenance, with only the shell and the motors saved from the incident. The impressive ship has since been entirely reconstructed.

Owned by Princess Caroline of Hanover, Pacha III has been passed from hand to hand since it was first put on water in 1936, under the name Arlette II. The 36-metre-long boat has had very many owners: in 1940 it was requisitioned by the Royal Navy, when it went back to the Mediterranean coast under the name Priamar. And in the '50s it was bought by French industrialist Louis Renault, who renamed it Briseis. The yacht was then sold to the painter Bernard Buffet, in 1967, who moored it in Saint-Tropez, in front of the ever glamorous L'Escale restaurant.

In 1990, by now in a depleted state, it was sold to Stefano Casiraghi and Caroline of Hanover, who had it entirely renovated. Casiraghi was never able to enjoy the yacht, however, after he died during a racing accident that same year. It reportedly took more than two years to restore the vessel to its former splendour and renamed Pacha III (in reference to the initials of Princess Caroline’s children). It is now primarily used to take the Hanover Royal Family on extended Mediterranean escapes.

Royal superyachts: how kings and queens sail the sea.

  • Magisterial mega-yachts have ferried royals around the world
  • "Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia" is one of the most splendid examples
  • Others include yachts owned by the royal families of Dubai, Monaco and Norway

(CNN) -- Before luxury yachting was the preserve of Russian tycoons and Silicon Valley moguls, it was only the world's wealthiest royals who built palaces on the sea.

There have been and continue to be a fleet of imperial yachts used to transport royals, from Russian czars to princes of Monaco, in the opulent fashion to which they are accustomed.

"Britannia"

There are probably few finer examples of a regal leisure boat than "Her Majesty's Yacht (HMY) Britannia," built in 1953 for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

Now decommissioned and on display in Edinburgh, Scotland, the vast and lavishly designed " HMY Britannia " has sailed over one million miles during 44 years of service and in the course of 968 official royal visits.

Once described by Queen Elizabeth as "the one place where I can truly relax," the royal yacht, built to many of the queen's specifications, boasts huge dining rooms adorned with gifts and curiosities from around the world, including a whale rib found by her husband on a beach.

In addition, there's a sun lounge with furniture chosen by the queen and a garage built to house the royal Rolls-Royce.

Sir Winston Churchill, Boris Yeltsin, Rajiv Gandhi and Nelson Mandela are among the famous names who have joined the queen on board over the years, but "HMY Britannia" was also deployed for more private and romantic occasions.

As Kate and William add the finishing touches to their wedding plans , they may well feel a pang of regret that "Britannia" is no longer in service. Four royal honeymoons took place on board, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 16-day trip in the Mediterranean.

"Dubai"

Today, the undisputed champion of royal vessels belongs to Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose $300 million mega-yacht is christened -- somewhat unimaginatively -- "Dubai."

Measuring 524 feet long, it's the world's second-largest yacht, eclipsed only by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's suitably named "Eclipse."

Three elevators and one vast open glass stairway serve its multitude of decks which, aside from the gold-finished, jewel-encrusted VIP guestrooms and appropriately palatial master bedrooms, contain a squash room, spa, banquet hall and cinema. And did we mention the helicopter pad up top?

In keeping with the fantasy-flavored extravagance of "Dubai," the yacht is moored year-round on the artificial "Logo Island," situated next to the country's emblematic, man-made archipelago "Palm Islands" -- built from one billion cubic meters of rock and sand.

"Standart"

If you thought that Abramovich and his fellow billionaires were the first of their countrymen to build ultra-ostentatious pleasure boats, then think again.

The Russian imperial yacht "Standart," built according to the specifications of Emperor Alexander III and his son Nicholas, was the largest imperial yacht on the oceans during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Completed in 1895, the opulent vessel was 401 feet long -- about the length of a soccer pitch -- colossal even by today's immodest standards.

Indeed, "Standart" was a veritable floating palace, adorned with mahogany-paneled drawing rooms, formal salons with polished floors, brass fittings, crystal chandeliers and velvet drapes.

The czar's private study was furnished in dark leather and elegant wooden furniture, while the czarina's drawing room and boudoir were bedecked in her favorite English chintz. The imperial yacht even had its own chapel for the private use of the family.

However, Russia's largest royal yacht was also her last. After the revolution in 1917, the ship was stripped of all its elegance, renamed "Vosemnadtsate Martza" and refitted as a drab, gray minelayer for service in the Soviet Navy. The boat was scrapped at Tallinn in Estonia in 1963.

"M/Y Grace"

Decked out with a Jacuzzi, sea kayaks, snorkeling gear and wetsuits, "M/Y Grace" is one of the few specially tailored yachts fit to chart the delicate waters surrounding the Galapagos Islands.

The boat's regal past is only hinted at in its name. "M/Y Grace," as the vessel is now known, was once the royal yacht of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.

When American actress Grace Kelly married the prince of Monaco, the couple were extensively pictured honeymooning on this exquisite 147-foot-long yacht, given to them as a wedding gift by prominent Greek shipping merchant Aristotle Onassis.

The boat was captured on boundless newsreels as cameras and reporters followed Kelly on her last voyage from the United States to her new home in what was then styled "the wedding of the century." The couple left the day after the ceremony to cruise the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia.

"K/S Norge"

The K/S Norge is one of the last active royal yachts in Europe, belonging to Herald V, King of Norway.

Built in 1937 by Camper and Nicholson, the oldest leisure marine company in the world, the boat was originally owned by British aviation pioneer Sir Thomas Sopwith -- who had given it over to the UK's Royal Navy to serve as a convoy escort vessel during World War II.

In July 1947, the ship was purchased by the people of Norway as a present to the much beloved King Haakon VII for his 75th birthday. The royal yacht was renamed "Norge," the Norwegian word for Norway.

Still used today for state visits abroad, the classically shaped yacht is also employed as a base for the king when he competes in international yacht races.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog serves as the official and private residence for HM The King and other members of the Royal Family when they are on summer cruises in home waters or on official visits overseas.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog was named by Queen Alexandrine in Copenhagen in 1931 and hoisted its flag for the first time on 26 May 1932. Dannebrog now serves as the official and private residence for The King and other members of the Royal Family when they are on summer cruises in home waters or on official visits overseas. The Royal Yacht also takes part in surveillance and sea rescue operations when at sea.

Dannebrog was built in 1931-1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen as a replacement for the previous royal vessel, the paddle steamer Dannebrog from 1879. The ship’s hull is a riveted steel construction on transverse frames. The ship has a clipper bow and an elliptic stern. Seen from the outside, the Royal Yacht can be divided into two sections. In front of the funnel, there is space for crew accommodations, cargo and the engine. During visits to Danish and foreign ports, the covered quarterdeck is used for receptions.

The royal compartment includes The King's study, a dining salon, a lounge, the bedrooms and more. The royal compartment contains furniture and fittings from the previous royal vessel from 1879.

royal yachts of europe

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog is an independent command administered by the Chief of HM The King’s Naval Household, who is a member of the Royal Court.

Dannebrog’s full crew consists of 9 officers, 7 sergeants, 2 able seamen, 2nd class and 36-39 conscripts, who are all specially-selected from the Navy.

Every year in January, a new team of conscripts begin at the Navy’s basic training school in Frederikshavn, where they undergo comprehensive naval training before they meet aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog in April.  It is the conscripts who handle all of the practical tasks on board, such as helmsman and lookout duty while sailing, guard service in port as well as cleaning and polishing of the considerable amounts of brass found on the ship, both outside and inside. Also, chefs, bakers and machinists are conscripts with relevant specialized training. After completing service and training aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, a very large proportion of the conscripts continue their careers on the Navy’s other ships.

The officers are normally seconded for periods of two to four years, whereas the conscripts stay for just one summer.

Since the flag was first hoisted in 1932, the yacht has trained approximately 3,300 recruits and travelled more than 800,000 nautical miles.

The yacht has visited most of the ports of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The yacht has also visited European ports, especially in France, and has been in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean seas as well as the American east coast.

Dimensions of the Royal Yacht:

  • Length (overall): 78.4 m
  • Width: 10.4 m
  • Draught: 3.9 m
  • Mast height: 23 m
  • Main engines: Two diesel engines, B&W Alpha Diesel, type 6T23L-KVO, 870 HP each

An overhaul was done in 1980-1981.

The Royal Yacht today

The sailing schedule of the Royal Yacht varies from year to year. The summer season is opened when the King embarks for inspection, normally in mid-May, and is closed in late September when the King disembarks.

Today, the Royal Yacht is used in part to support the King’s participation in regattas. The King uses the ship as a base when competing in major yacht races. In recent years he has sailed in a number of regattas in European waters.

The King and Queen also travel on board the Norge in connection with official engagements in Norway and abroad. The ship is also used by The Crown Prince and Crown Princess on their county visits, and the vessel is often seen along the coast of Norway during the summer.

Special occasions

In 1991 King Harald and Queen Sonja used the Royal Yacht to visit Southern Norway in connection with their consecration tour. The following year the entire Royal Family conducted a tour of Northern Norway. In the summer of 1997 the King and Queen invited members of the European Royal Houses to join in the celebration of their 60th birthdays. The guests enjoyed a cruise from Trondheim in central Norway to Lofoten in the north, and were lodged on board the Royal Yacht Norge , the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog and the Norwegian naval vessel KNM Horten .

King Olav V also used the Royal Yacht in 1958 and 1959 for tours in connection with his consecration.

Maintenance

The Norge requires extensive maintenance, both above and below deck. This is carried out by the crew during the winter. The ship is classified by DNV.

A Royal Decree of 1947 stipulates that the ship shall be manned, operated and maintained by the Norwegian armed forces.

During the summer season the ship has a crew of  approximately 50.  During the winter the crew is reduced to a minimum of approximately 25. The crew’s main tasks consist of watch duty and maintenance. In February each year a group of new recruits reports for duty to begin theoretical and practical training for the coming season.

Ship design-knowledge in early modern Europe: Royal yachts and the shared knowledge of ship-designers and common shipwrights

Profile image of Juan Pablo Olaberria

The initial objective of this thesis aimed at comparing the performance characteristics of two yachts belonging to King Charles II of England during the latter years of the 17th century. This goal, which called for accurate modelling of the shape of each yacht, was extended to investigate the design processes used by Dutch and English shipwrights of the period. It was soon decided that, instead of focusing on the performance of each ship or, more precisely, of their theoretical ‒therefore questionable‒ reconstruction, this research would focus on the design knowledge of the early modern period used to design the different yachts and contemporary ships. This was necessary, firstly, as a means of helping with the theoretical reconstruction which was one of the initial aims of the research. But, most importantly, it was necessary to produce a picture of the knowledge-space in which ships of this period were designed and built. Consequently, this research offers an overview of the current narrative that describes ship design knowledge of the early modern period and criticises some aspects of it. Moreover, as the current understanding of such knowledge is included within a longer narrative that describes ship design knowledge of shipwrights from the earliest known examples of ships to the present, this research also looks into the manner in which ship design knowledge is understood within such a long narrative. This research provides arguments to show that ship design knowledge could be re-defined. It provides a more nuanced description of the design knowledge of traditional shipwrights and includes the knowledge of early modern shipwrights within this re-modelled narrative.

One of the important questions in shipping- and shipbuilding history is: When did shape-determined construction techniques based on geometric abstractions influence the pure empiric way of shipbuilding? This question is interrelated with several other recently discussed topics such as the transition from shell to skeleton construction; the standardisation in shipbuilding; the beginnings, reasons and surrounding circumstances of ship type classification; and what importance ship type classification had in Hanseatic times and in recent research. In my considerations I will debate whether an intrinsic change in the Hanseatic system of the Prussian quarter’s sea trade structure led to a special change in shipbuilding. There is also the question of whether the design of Hanseatic ships had already gone through an anticipated determination of the changed shape. If that happened, it is necessary to ascertain when and which facts, as well as indirect indications, can be found to verify or falsify this theory.

The history of maritime trade has been the subject of considerable research since the 1950s, but the technical artefacts of this trade have not received the attention they deserve. While historians have paid plenty attention to ships-their features, tonnage, etc.-and port infrastructure overseas, the issues relating to naval repair and construction in the Empires have rarely attracted interest. However, this is a key factor in understanding the dynamics of trade, which encompasses the interplay between economic history, social history and the history of technology. Drawing on the example of the French Empire, this article aims to provide a first approach to this economy of maintenance, repair and shipbuilding overseas. The first step is to identify the places where these complex tasks were carried out and to establish the temporality of equipment in overseas ports. Did the French Empire offer a network of ports equipped to maintain, repair and build ships? What equipment does this include? But while the question of infrastructure is crucial, insofar as it raises other issues related to the role of the State and its relationship with economic stakeholders, it is also essential to consider that a significant share of maintenance, repair and construction tasks were not associated with any specific infrastructure. The question of knowledge, know-how and their exchange within the Empires is also important and is the subject of the second part of this article. The aim is to demonstrate that the identification and breakdown of shipbuilding workers, the establishment of their occupational mobility and the technical discussions they engaged in with other Europeans, settlers or natives, provide challenging research opportunities that may help us to understand the maintenance, repair and construction of ships in the Empires.

Seaborne transport was crucial to Spanish exploration, trade, and empire in the early modern period. This article examines the changes to ship types and configurations employed in those endeavors, in which private initiative and governmental regulations both played important roles.

Previous ship studies often grouped vessels into typologies to demonstrate a linear progression of development. This investigation of Endeavour (built 1771), HMS Buffalo (built 1813) and Edwin Fox (built 1853) employs a thematic approach to demonstrate that hull development is influenced by the cross-temporal transmission of knowledge and technologies. This research addresses how the investigation of design and construction of British East India colonial ships inform us of ship manufacture during the late-eighteenth and early to mid-nineteenth centuries. A review of archaeological, archival, material analyses, material identification and dendrochronology is used to answer several lines of enquiry. These include identifying external factors affecting information exchange between shipbuilding industries; interpreting design and construction changes over time using material evidence; exploring innovation and adaptation to new technologies; assessing properties of local ship timbers; and developing a framework to understand ship development. Finally, this study discusses the social, political, economic, cultural and environmental factors that influenced ship development and the exchange of information between shipwrights and is used to more fully develop British colonial and Indian ship studies. -- This research is significant to the discipline of nautical archaeology and to the advancement of several nations’ shared maritime heritage. It contributes to understanding colonial ship construction and reveals meaningful insights into resource selection, technological changes and shipwright behaviours during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The ships Endeavour, HMS Buffalo and Edwin Fox are intertwined with several countries and represent multi-faceted historical records that resulted from cultural transmission. Furthermore, this thesis is significant because it investigates for the first time these vessels located within Aotearoa New Zealand that are threatened by natural and cultural site formation processes.

During the period of activity of Ole Judichær (1690-1727), sources in the form of lines plans, ship models and construction documentation are preserved in the Danish National Archives and the Royal Danish Naval Museum. While some of these sources have been studied in other contexts, they have not been studied in conjunction. Using as study case the model of Prinz Wilhelm, the first ship to have been officially designed by Judichær, in conjunction with sources in form of lines plans and historical documents, and applying archaeological methodologies, an explorative study of the construction and design of a Danish warship at the end of the 17th century is possible.

Juan Pablo Olaberria

The aim of the article is to show that the Mutiozabal shipyard in Orio, Gipuzkoa, Spain, was using the tools and procedures of non-graphic hull-design methods into the latter 19th and early 20th centuries. These procedures allow a hull to be designed with a very simple set of tools: a template of the master-frame and some simple graduated gauges or graminhos. The plan of a 65-Burgos-foot (18.11 m) trading boat is used as the basis of the study. The nature of the templates and graminhos is shown in detail, as well as their use.

Gallery: Europe's royal families captured at sea

To mark the Queen's official birthday 2021, BOAT rounds up the most iconic images, and boats, of Europe's royal families at sea, including Prince Philip, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and the Queen herself.

Here, Queen Elizabeth II is seen boarding the 126m HMY Royal Yacht Britannia in 1995 to cruise around the Western Isles. Royal Yacht Britannia served as the Queen's royal yacht from 1954 until it was decommissioned in 1997. However, plans have now been announced to commission a new national flagship .

Prince Philip

Prince Philip, the former Duke of Edinburgh, is photographed here with boat designer Uffa Fox sailing at the Cowes Regatta on board Coweslip , a Flying Fifteen keelboat that was presented to the Queen and Prince Philip as a wedding present in 1949. Prince Philip was known to go sailing frequently on Coweslip with Fox. Together, they won the Britannia Cup in 1952. The husband of Queen Elizabeth II was an avid sailor; he began his training for life at sea while studying at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, and from the age of 18 he joined the Royal Navy and served from 1939 until 1951. During World War II he served with distinction in the Mediterranean and Pacific Fleets. Before his death, he held the title of Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

In October 2018 the Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on their first overseas tour as a married couple, visiting Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. The trip was timed to coincide with the Invictus Games, which began on October 20 and of which the Duke of Sussex is a patron, and with sailing making up a key part of the event it wasn't long before the couple found themselves out on the water.

The Duchess of Cambridge

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge both spent time sailing as children and have carried this passion into their adult lives. Here, the Duchess of Cambridge is seen at the helm, competing on behalf of The Royal Foundation at the King's Cup regatta. The event was hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Cowes in 2019.

Pierre Casiraghi

Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover and grandson of Princess Grace of Monaco, is seen on board of Malizia during the 36th Copa Del Rey Mafre Sailing Cup in 2017 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

The British, Spanish and Greek Royal Families

Who better to invite aboard your royal yacht than other royals? When King Juan Carlos of Spain invited the fellow young British and Greek royal families aboard his yacht Fortuna (now re-named Foners ) in 1990 it was a photo op not to be missed. From left to right: Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, King Constantine II of Greece, Princess Theodora of Greece, Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince William, Prince Harry, Queen Sofia of Spain, Princess Cristina of Spain and Princess Elena of Spain.

Prince Frederik of Denmark

A keen sailor, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark is seen here with crewmate Chris Meeham competing in the Men's 35+ Tasar class sailing during day seven of the 2009 World Masters Games at Woollahra Sailing Club in Sydney, Australia.

The Dutch Royal Family

Dutch Princess Felicia, Princess Anastasia, Prince Lucas and Princess Marilene are pictured on their yacht De Groene Draeck (The Green Dragon) attending the final day of SAIL Amsterdam 2015.

Prince George

Prince George, the firstborn son of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is also spotted at the inaugural King’s Cup regatta alongside grandfather Michael Middleton.

King Juan Carlos

The Spanish royal family has long been known for its sailing prowess and former monarch King Juan Carlos I is no different. In 1972, Juan Carlos even competed at the Olympics in the Dragon class racing and finished in 15th place. The Spanish royal has owned a number of yachts in his lifetime including the 41.5 metre Fortuna , one of the fastest yachts in the world, which has since been renamed Foners . Here he is seen helming another of his yachts, the Judel and Vrolijk -designed sailing yacht Bribón XV .

royal yachts of europe

Although Her Majesty Yacht Britannia was decommissioned on 11 December and has been a museum since, one can’t help mentioning her in the review of royal yachts: she is an iconic phenomenon, a bearer of historical artifacts and a living participant in world history. She was the second yacht to bear this name, and inherited the helm from her predecessor: a 37-metre cutter built for Edward VII (who was, by the way, a ‘sister’ to the classic Valkyrie II yacht that challenged the 1893 America’s Cup).

Britannia was launched at John Brown Co. Ltd shipyard on April 16, and went on her maiden voyage in the spring of 1954 from Portsmouth to Malta. Since that time, she carried Elizabeth II, her family members and various officials all over the world, making over 696 foreign visits and 272 voyages in the British waters, covering the total of 1 087 623 nautical miles over 44 years. What a lot of celebrities had been on board, what a lot of agreements signed! This is the only state yacht in the world to enter a foreign port in the midst of hostilities to rescue British and foreign citizens: in 1986, Britannia evacuated more than 1,000 refugees from Aden (Yemen).

With a length of 126 m the vessel was amazingly sea-worthy: two Pametrada steam turbines of 12,000 hp accelerated her up to 21.5 knots. They say that the engine compartment was kept so clean that all those who entered were made to wipe their feet on a mat. There were 220 sailors, 21 officers, a detachment of Royal Marines of 26, and until the 1970s, the crew was given rum on a daily basis.

Now Britannia is moored for good at the Port of Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. All the clocks on board are stopped at 3:01 pm, marking the time that the Queen left her in tears. The yacht is managed by Royal Yacht Britannia Trust. Every year this attraction is visited by about 300 000 tourists.

Gloriana

Her launch, which took place in April 2012, was a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II for her “diamond” 60th anniversary of the accession. Not a penny from the state treasury was spent on her construction, as for reasons of economy the Parliament had even retired the legendary Britannia. Some private individuals and several foundations volunteered to finance this gift (£1.5 million) to the Queen.

Naval architects Stuart Roy and Ed Burnett were inspired by Canaletto's London paintings of 18th-century rowing barges on the Thames. The design also resembles the features of the boat that belonged to the Lord Mayor of London in the 19th century. Anyway, the exterior turned out to be quite “historical”. The yacht was made of wood using traditional methods: Prince Charles had even sent some sweet chestnut trees from his estate for the flooring. The sponsors did not stint on carvings in gold leave and hand-painting.

The long and narrow hull with a sharp bow and a high stern has rather a massive superstructure with eight flagpoles and a ceremonial bridge for the guests. The 27-metre vessel is powered by 18 strong oarsmen, reaching a speed of 3-4 knots. Later, in 2017, the barge was fitted with twin electric Torqeedo Deep Blue 40 engines powered from rechargeable batteries to avoid any issues when going through the gateways.

Gloriana made her brilliant debut on 3 June 2012 and led the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant with over 1000 other vessels as participants. Now she serves as the centrepiece of rowing regattas and major water festivals in London.

Sweden

The royal barge named after the Swedish national award, the Order of Vasa, was built in 1774 based on a ship plan by Fredrik Henrik af Chapman for King Gustav III. Her first documented public appearance was in July of the same year in the course of a naval review outside Stockholm.

royal yachts of europe

On 8 August 1921 the yacht that was quite dilapidated but still running was destroyed in a fire. The ruling family decided to restore the relic and in 1923 her exact replica was launched. In 1976 she served as the royal “carriage”, when King Carl XVI Gustaf married Silvia Sommerlath.

Vasaorden has been taking part in state events up to present. She is based in the naval museum in Galärvarvet, where anybody can see her – if they are lucky to find her at the pier. The thing is the 18-metre barge is powered by nine pairs of oars, so the crew of sailors from the Swedish Navy have to keep fit and train regularly.

royal yachts of europe

The yacht stands out for her rich golden ornament that adorns all of the above-water part, including the rudder blade. The bow is adorned with carved arms and a flagpole with a lily on its truck. There is a superstructure in the shape of a glazed gazebo with some exquisite carving and a crown on top. The elongated aft overhang houses an elegant helmsman’s stand and another flagpole: when the monarchs are on board, two pennants are raised at the same time.

Dannebrog (named after the national flag) is the second yacht to bear this name that belongs to the Royal Family of Denmark. The previous was a side-wheel paddle steam yacht built in 1879, which took part in numerous historical events. For example, on 23 November 1905 she brought Danish prince Carl to Norway, where he assumed the Norwegian throne as king Haakon VII. And on 11 – 23 July 1909 King Frederik of Denmark used her for a voyage to Russia to see his sister Dagmar, who married Emperor Alexander III as Maria Feodorovna. In the 1920s the vessel was found unusable, and the new one was built by the autumn of 1931.

The steel hull of 78.4 m preserved the retro design: a clipper bow, an elliptical stern, raked masts and a massive funnel. The last overhaul with the replacement of the propulsion system and navigation equipment was in 1981. At present the yacht can reach a top speed of 15 knots and has a range of 3600 nautical miles.

royal yachts of europe

There is royal accommodation for 14 guests aft, featuring the historical interiors that come from Dannebrog’s predecessor. The entire bow section is dedicated to the crew. The yacht is part of the Navy, so officers are normally seconded for periods of two to four years, while the conscripts come from the Naval School of Frederikshavn for just one summer. So apart from the representative functions, Dannebrog is also engaged in patrolling, rescuing the drowning people, training future officers and can be used as a hospital ship.

Norway

Norge is what Norwegians call their country. And that is what they called the yacht that the Norwegian people gave to their king Haakon VII for his 75-th jubilee in 1947. In fact, the Parliament decided to give him a yacht back in 1905, when Danish Prince Carl (who was a naval officer) agreed to assume the Norwegian throne. But there were no funds for that in the treasury then. After the Second World War there was a nationwide appeal for funds for a yacht for the king, who had become a national symbol of resistance against Nazi Germany. And common people did collect the necessary sum.

royal yachts of europe

The interest centred on the British 80.2 metre motor yacht named Philante, which was one of the largest in the world for the time. British Camper and Nicholsons shipyard originally built her for the British aviation engineer Thomas Sopwith, and since 1939 on being requisitioned by the Royal Navy, she served as an armed yacht in the North Atlantic. After her refit in 1948 Haakon VII took the renamed vessel out to sea.

royal yachts of europe

In 1985 when Norge was docked for repair at a shipyard in Horten, during welding operations a fire broke out. Only the hull and the engines survived. But the ship was restored completely and is now still owned by the Royal Family, although operated by the national Defense Forces.

For King Harald V and Queen Sonja Norge is the official residence during their visits both home and abroad. Harald, who is an avid yachtsman, also used it as a base when he competed in regattas.

De Groene Draeck

The Netherlands

In 1956 this yacht was given by the Dutch people to Princess Beatrix for her 18th birthday (and hence is number VA 18 on her sail). But the official ceremony took place only a year later. Soon the vessel was christened De Groene Draeck, which means “The Green dragon”. However, when she was launched at G. de Vries Lentsch shipyard in Amsterdam, she had a name of Lemsteraak. And in fact, it is a genuine Lemsteraak, which is a traditional Dutch flat-bottomed sailboat. Her mast and the bowsprit are dismountable. The boats of this type used to be “workhorses” that carried loads. Their specific construction is due to the need to sail along narrow and shallow canals and under bridges. At present sailing Lemsteraaks are extremely popular in the Netherlands.

royal yachts of europe

The hull of the 15-metre De Groene Draeck is made of steel. In addition to the sails of 175 sq.m the vessel is equipped with a diesel Perkins engine of 65 hp. On board there is a small saloon, a ladies’ cabin for four and a men’s cabin for two, as well as a navigation wheelhouse for the crew with a separate access.

royal yachts of europe

The bulwark of teak wood is decorated with carving on the inside – not on the outside. In September 2021 a major overhaul began, which has by now been completed. De Groene Draeck has come back to her duties of a royal yacht. Beatrix abdicated not long ago and passed on the throne to her heir, and now she enjoys cruising the family sailboat and is sometimes even spotted at the helm.

The Green Blue

The Green Blue Announces Launch of 2024-25 University Sailing Sustainability Challenge with new sponsorship by Royal Thames Yacht Club

The Green Blue's University Sailing Sustainability Challenge Awards

19 th September 2024 – The Green Blue is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2024-25 University Sailing Sustainability Challenge (USSC) , beginning on 1 st September 2024 and running until February 2025.

Since its inception in 2015, the USSC has encouraged University Sailing Clubs (USCs) across the UK to adopt more sustainable practices, and this year marks a significant milestone. The challenge welcomes the Royal Thames Yacht Club as its new sponsor, bringing fresh energy and support to the challenge.

In addition to this new partnership, the 2024-25 Challenge introduces a revamped judging criterion, allowing clubs to be even more creative and flexible in their approach to sustainability.

Supported by the British Universities Sailing Association (BUSA), the USSC was created to help University Sailing Clubs (USCs) across the UK become more sustainable. Clubs participate in the challenge by appointing a Sustainability Officer who in turn will commit to The Green Blue Boating Pledge . They then select areas of focus from eight categories, including reducing waste, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change.

University Sailing Sustainability Challenge Composite Logos 2024-25

Over the course of the challenge, clubs, and their Sustainability Officers complete tasks within their four chosen categories with the aim of submitting evidence of their work to the USSC judging panel.

An exciting opportunity for clubs and students to really show what they can do; the panel awards all clubs who participate and complete their tasks with an official USSC certificate of achievement. The judging panel also score all submissions with the top four participants being selected to receive a prize at the USSC Awards Ceremony, held during the prestigious RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show in February 2025.

“The younger generation of sailors are the future of the sport and it’s amazing how many of them are passionate about sustainability. By getting involved in the USSC, it’s a great way for individuals and university clubs to not only earn recognition but also set an example for the wider boating community. The work they do can make a real difference in protecting the environment, both in the present and for years to come.” said Kate Fortnam, Campaign Manager at The Green Blue.

Last year an impressive 14 universities successfully completed the Challenge, showcasing their dedication to fostering sustainable values within their clubs. This year, with the support of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, The Green Blue anticipate even greater participation and impact.

“At the Royal Thames Yacht Club, we are committed to the adoption of sustainable practices both within the Club and on the water, and as such are delighted to be supporting the excellent University Sailing Sustainability Challenge. Our young people are the future, and it is critical that future is sustainable. May we thank all participants in this most worthy of causes.” said Richard Powell, Vice Commodore at the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

“We, the university community, benefit hugely from being a part of then the green blue challenge. Through the challenge we push ourselves, our clubs, and the clubs we sail at, to be more sustainable and to look at the ways in which the sailing community can support the protection of our waterways and our planet” said Amelie Sadler, Vice Chair at BUSA – British Universities Sailing Association.
