Topsail Island sits about 40 miles northeast of Wilmington . The 26-mile-long barrier island off the North Carolina coast is home to three charming seaside towns: North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach. This destination is easily accessible by car, or you can fly to a nearby airport and take a shuttle. That's a fairly recent development, as the laidback island wasn't accessible except by boat until WWII.

Topsail makes an ideal summer getaway as it rarely gets crowded even during the peak season. Each of the three main towns provides a fun and laid-back beach vacation. With its maritime forests and natural landscape, water surrounds North Topsail Beach on three sides and offers dog-friendly shores. Surf City, located in the middle of the island, is the most commercial destination, offering many dining options, shopping, and community events. On the island's southernmost end, Topsail Beach is an old-school coastal town with untouched sands and unbeatable views.

According to local legend, Topsail got its name centuries ago when pirates hid their boats in the channel between the island and the mainland. Only the top of the boats' sails was visible to ships approaching from the Atlantic. Rumor has it that Blackbeard's treasure is still buried somewhere on the island. Though you aren't likely to find buried treasure, there are plenty of reasons to venture to Topsail Island, North Carolina , for your next vacation.

Spend The Day At The Beach

If you're lucky enough to snag a beachfront rental, you'll likely spend a lot of time sunning, shelling, and building sand castles on the beach . If not, there are dozens of public access points along Topsail Island (most parking lots charge an hourly rate). The beaches here are known as a hot spot for shark teeth; visit during low tide to find them. North Topsail Beach has 4x4 access onto the beach off of River Road. An access pass must be purchased before entering. Other beaches allow beach driving at some locations for fishing purposes only; this requires a pass and may be seasonal.

Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon at Richard C. Peters Town Park in North Topsail Beach, or hop in a kayak to explore the sound, inlet, and ocean surrounding the town. In Topsail Beach, set up your chair at Serenity Point to catch a breathtaking sunset.

Learn About Sea Turtle Conservation

Topsail is best known for its sea turtle preservation and conservation efforts. Throughout the 26 miles of coastline, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest and lay eggs from April through September. While you're here, visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City. Visitors can volunteer at the hospital, take a tour of the facility, and help with the rehabilitation efforts of the turtle patients.

Fish At The Pier

Cast a line off the Surf City Ocean Pier, another point of interest here. Rods and crab traps are available for rental. Check the pier's website to find out when kids can fish for free.

Catch A Ride On The Water Shuttle

Tuck's Water Shuttle makes regular trips to Lea Island , an undeveloped barrier island that serves as a sanctuary for wildlife and a prime nesting spot for sea birds. Book a sunset cruise for spectacular views on the water.

Take A SUP Science Class

The whole family can join in a unique two-hour marine science class on stand-up paddleboards through Ecological Marine Adventures. Classes generally take place from June to August, but check the group's website for scheduling. They also offer night-time ghost crab hunts and have a touch tank aquarium with horseshoe crabs, bamboo sharks, and other marine life.

Visit The WWII Museum

Plan to visit another popular attraction, the Missiles and More Museum, and learn about the island's history during WWII. The museum is in a historic building used by the government for a secret missile operation in the 1940s. Exhibits also cover pirates and the natural history of the area.

Experience Ocean Fest

Ocean Fest's big event is in the fall, with a two-day live music festival in Surf City that raises funds to benefit the ocean. The nonprofit also holds a retro surf competition with vintage boards during the festival and other events throughout the year, like a family-friendly fair and parade in May. All are designed to "Surf and Protect" Mother Ocean.

Topsail Island has plenty of options for fresh seafood and water views . Dine at the Beach Shop and Grill for classic Southern dishes that use sustainable and organic ingredients from local farms. The first-come, first-serve patio within sight of the beach welcomes dogs and features live music.

Splash By The Sea specializes in popular seafood favorites and pizzas in a relaxed setting (though swimsuits aren't allowed). Their patio also offers ocean views and live music.

Located in the heart of Surf City, NC, the Topsail Island Yacht Club offers covered dry slips to protect your boat and reduce maintenance costs. We have a deep water channel adjacent to the Surf City swing bridge at mile marker 260 on the Intracoastal Waterway. We have an in water staging area where your boat will be waiting for you when you arrive. There are outside work racks available for light maintenance or cleaning your boat.

Privately owned and operated

All of the slips at Topsail Island Yacht Club are privately owned and the yacht club is operated by the Topsail Island Yacht Club Owners Association. We have a 2400 square foot Clubhouse and 16 foot by 40 foot inground pool on site.

• Amenities: Ping Pong Table, Foosball Table, Grill - Gas (***Please note: Guests are responsible for the purchase of propane for any gas grill provided. Guests are also required to clean any grill prior to departure to prevent additional cleaning charges.***)

Topsail Beach

The southern portion of Topsail Beach (also known as “The South End” or “The Point”) is a special place, a nonpareil site of profound natural beauty. This 149+ acre property features more than 1.6 miles of sound-to-sea frontage along the Atlantic Ocean, New Topsail Inlet, and Banks Channel and hosts an expanse of pristine dunes, beach, estuarine wetlands, and maritime shrub forest providing habitat for a diversity of coast-centric wildlife. Loggerhead sea turtles annually make their epic crawl up the beach to lay their eggs, Wilson’s Plovers nest among the dunes, and Willets skitter and forage along the intertidal flats. Seabeach amaranth, a rare sand-binding coastal plant, dots the open beach. More than 30 different priority (declining) bird species have been documented there.

The South End represents one of the last remaining undeveloped, privately owned sites on any North Carolina barrier island. This property is UNPARALLELED in terms of coastal conservation values AND it is UNPROTECTED from future residential development. However, the property owners have given the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust a window of opportunity to buy and protect the property—forever.

The contract between the Coastal Land Trust and the owners provides for closing on the purchase on or before March 31, 2025 .

Is the Coastal Land Trust paying more than the market value for the property?

No. The Coastal Land Trust cannot pay more than fair market value for the property based on an appraisal completed by a state-certified appraiser, and the appraisal(s) obtained by the Coastal Land Trust will be subject to review and approval by state and/or federal grant funders.

What happens if the Coastal Land Trust comes up short on the funding needed to buy The South End?

If the Coastal Land Trust’s fundraising efforts are unsuccessful, the Coastal Land Trust will not be able to buy and ensure permanent conservation of The South End. While the Coastal Land Trust has already started working hard on various public grant requests, nothing is guaranteed, and even if all grants are awarded, significant private contributions will still be needed to ensure fundraising success. These private contributions, together with anticipated private foundation, state, and federal grant funds are needed for the Coastal Land Trust to complete the purchase of The South End. If the fundraising is successful and Coastal Land Trust purchases the property, what then?

The Coastal Land Trust plans to retain ownership of The South End until all awarded grant funds are received and then transfer the property to the State of North Carolina to be managed by the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management.

Will the property be open to the public?

Yes. The South End will remain open to the public for traditional uses like beachcombing/walking, swimming, fishing, etc. The existing parking area will remain available for public use. Since it is anticipated that public conservation dollars will be used to fund the purchase of The South End, there will be efforts to protect the conservation values of the property including nesting shorebirds (e.g., through signage and roping areas off). Existing local rules and regulations adopted by the Town of Topsail Beach will continue to be in effect, i.e., dogs must be on a leash from April 1 st to Sept. 30 th (versus May 15 th to Sept. 30th in other areas of Topsail Island) because South Topsail Beach lies within Unit L07 of the Coastal Barrier Resources System.

Will the property be permanently protected?

Yes. The use of any public conservation funding requires permanent conservation restrictions. If the fundraising for the acquisition of the Topsail Beach tract is successful, the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management will seek to have the property dedicated under the State Nature Preserves Act. Articles of Dedication will be prepared by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. Articles of Dedication are similar to a permanent conservation easement on private property. In general, the state’s dedication process expressly allows for public use but tries to balance it with protection of conservation values. Examples of state-owned coastal lands that have been dedicated under the State Nature Preserves Act include Hammocks Beach State Park and Boiling Spring Lakes Preserve. Many state game lands and state parks have also been dedicated. While the Division of Coastal Management also manages the ten NC Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve sites, the Division does not intend to add this property to the Reserve system.

How will the property be managed?

The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management will develop a management plan after the property is transferred to the state. The Division of Coastal Management hopes to partner with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission staff to assist with the identification, management, and monitoring of shorebird nesting areas. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission staff already identify, mark, and monitor sea turtle nests all along Topsail Island including South Topsail Beach and that work will continue. Additional details on future management will be forthcoming but the pressing need is to raise the necessary funds to purchase and permanently conserve The South End. Let’s Make it Happen!
