Sitting On A Dock Of The Thames: The Sunborn London Yacht Hotel
Gina Baksa enjoys an overnight stay and afternoon tea at the luxurious Sunborn London superyacht hotel, moored next to ExCel in London’s Docklands.
During visits to the ExCel London conference centre, I’d often admired the gleaming white Sunborn London superyacht moored below on Royal Victoria Dock. This splendid yacht hotel first arrived in Docklands in 2014 and has become a highly popular business and leisure venue offering 136 spacious bedrooms and suites across its five generous decks.
The O2 and the City are both a short cab ride away, while the DLR Custom House station is just a five-minute walk away – a perfect location to capture both the leisure and business markets.
It was a sunny-blue-sky day, but wintry cold, when I arrived at Sunborn London yacht hotel. I was glad of the warmth in the reception area from the point of the view of the heating, and the genuinely friendly welcome from Victoria and the team on the front desk.
My executive suite cabin was on the fourth floor, reached via a spectacular circular staircase with an enormous gold chandelier at the centre. Somehow the effect managed to look refined and elegant rather than 80s disco ball. And I loved the mirrored ceiling that reflected the light and gold around the stairwell. It was a very glamorous beginning to my overnight stay, and other guests thought so too as they posed for selfies on the staircase.
The new dark blue carpet and teak accents, alongside the high-ceilinged corridors with white and gold doors, made me feel we were about to set sail for the French Rivier. Alas, the Sunborn London doesn’t have an engine (it was pulled into Royal Victoria Dock by two tugs), and its erstwhile engine room is now the staff canteen, while the bridge is home to the offices. But I could always dream…
Sunborn London Cabins & Suites The Sunborn has a total of 136 rooms, which include two junior suites and two executive suites. The latter is at the front of the yacht and face forward, offering dockside or riverside views. At a very generous 45 square metres, these executive suites are divided into a bedroom, bathroom, lounge and work area. Best of all is the Jacuzzi bath which healed my sore muscles after a stint in the fabulous private sauna. What a suite!
Full-length French windows opened out on to a spectacular decking area with sun loungers, and needless to say, it was too chilly to linger too long. However, in the summer, this suite would be an incredible entertaining space. Guests will also find their complimentary mini-bar refilled daily, while an early check-in and late check-out are available.
My gorgeous king-sized bed was heavenly (thank you blackout curtains), and I especially appreciated the tea and coffee making facilities, plus the iron and ironing board. And the Wi-Fi I’m happy to report was fast and responsive throughout the yacht. The carpeted executive rooms also looked inviting, thanks to the king-sized beds and all the other amenities alongside a walk-in shower. There were iPads in every room too, each with two USB ports and information on the yacht, dining and the spa, plus Google Maps listing London attractions and shopping.
Sunborn London Restaurant and Bar Arriving at lunchtime, I decided to snack at the Sundown Bar since I had a dinner reservation at the Land’s End that evening. The service was welcoming and friendly – and I ordered a smooth glass of Laurent-Perrier before enjoying my falafel and fries.
The bar is bustling at night, though thankfully it was peaceful when I arrived. I took advantage of the calm, and simply stared out at the river, and the City and O2.
I took a window seat in the Land’s End restaurant – handily on the fourth deck and just a few minutes from my cabin. The seating is well laid out, so everyone gets a window view and space to hear each other chat. Executive Head Chef Paul Hegley is at the helm here and curates a tasty British menu using mainly seasonal produce. Fish is sourced from the UK, and all the meat is said to be from a rare breed, coming from independent farms. There are gluten-free options and well as veggie meals to cater for all palates.
I chose the smoked butternut squash velouté with pecorino and hazelnut to start. It was a perfect precursor to my delicious and very festive Ballotine of Norfolk bronze turkey, chestnut and cranberry stuffing, smoked pancetta, seasonal vegetables, roasted Parisienne potatoes and pigs in blankets. Turkey can often be dry, but mine was delicious, and the vegetables perfectly cooked. Alas, I had to forgo the tempting Sticky toffee pudding with spiced rum with vanilla ice cream, but it looked amazing.
Other mains options included duck, steak and fish, as well as two vegetarian choices of mushroom risotto, and goats curd with pumpkin. There’s also a superb wine list, and my Malbec Bodegas Santa Ana was full-bodied, and my friend loved his Via Nova Pinot Grigio. If you don’t feel like company for supper, you can choose in-room dining, which is available 24 hours a day.

Superyacht boss asks why Bayesian crew were not in 'state of alert' for storm
Giovanni Costantino - boss of the firm which makes and sells vessels like the Bayesian - says they "are absolutely safe", suggesting human error was likely to blame for the sinking.

The boss of a firm which makes and sells vessels like Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht has questioned why its crew were not in a "state of alert" when a storm hit.
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that makes the Perini vessels, told Sky News they "are absolutely safe", suggesting human error was behind the boat going down.
He said the "event" that capsized the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday "could have been managed with an average amount of attention".
Follow latest: Five bodies identified
"There are a whole series of operations that highlight a chain of negative events that were negatively managed on board," he said.
"The first is why the ship and the crew were not in a state of alert, given the storm from the weather charts that everyone could read and in particular had to be read by the ship's bridge guard, the event was absolutely readable and expected."
He said the yacht's crew should have been in a state of "alert management", meaning everyone on board had to be in the main lounge, which is the assembly point, rather than their cabins.
No one should have been on deck, while the captain, James Cutfield, should have been inside with the engines to manage the ship, he said.
"The ship, both the hull and the quarterdeck, all the openings, were supposed to be closed," he added.
No official cause has been given for why the boat sank as powerful winds battered the area overnight and reports of waterspouts, which are like tornados that form over water.
Some experts have speculated the vessel may have taken on water from a freak wave through open hatches or doors or capsized as gusts hit the huge mast.
Prosecutors investigating the sinking are continuing to question the survivors, with the captain among those to be interviewed.
Mr Costantino asked: "Why was the ship in that situation? The storm was readable… We must ask ourselves why none of the fishermen in the port of Porticello went out at sea that night? Why did no one go out to sea?
"Everyone knew about the storm. And then, if a fisherman knew, why the commander of a ship of such importance, with guests of such level and importance, with 12 guests on board... Why wasn't he in an alert situation?"
Keep up with all the latest news from the UK and around the world by following Sky News
The vessel sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.
Six bodies have been found, including British tech tycoon Mr Lynch, while his 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing.
Mr Costantino has insisted there are no flaws with the design and construction of the yacht and that the Perini vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense", with their structure and keel making them what he called "unsinkable bodies".
He said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.
It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the sinking, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.
A spokesperson for the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said: "The MAIB is investigating the foundering of the UK-registered large yacht Bayesian off the northern coast of Sicily on 19 August 2024.
"It would not be appropriate for the MAIB to comment further while the investigation is ongoing."
Sky News has also contacted Italian investigators, Italy's coastguard and captain James Cutfield for comment.

Britain's first superyacht hotel has sailed into London.
The 394ft, four star, five storey Sunborn Yacht was pulled along the Thames in April and opened to guests on Wednesday.
Situated in Royal Victoria Dock, within sight of the Millennium Dome – it is the Capital's only floating hotel.

Room prices start from £160 per night, which isn't bad for a superyacht. By comparison: chartering a luxury yacht for a week costs tens of thousands of pounds, and a London hotel room is an average £127 a night.

It certainly looks every inch the ship of dreams - though it isn't actually sea-worthy – and the interiors reflect traditional cruise-liners – shiny brass railings, teak wood panelling, spiral staircase, centre piece chandelier, art-deco wall lights, slightly off-putting swirly carpeting, plus very heavy doors that won't budge in a squall.
It's popular, according to the General Manager, Andreas Stys, for special occasions.
George R R Martin, author of Game of Thrones, extended his visit during the World Science Fiction Convention held at the ExCel centre, (which the yacht is parked next to), in August.
The bar, restaurant and top deck Sky Bar (all open to non-staying guests) are in the stern of the ship, and gaze towards the city framed by the steely grey cranes lining the dock

It's become a popular hotspot for marriage proposals too.
Those popping the question might consider booking into the Executive Suite at the bow of the ship – with its own balcony, plus sun loungers – as well as a Jacuzzi, sauna and double shower.
The view from the bedroom looks out onto the converted warehouses on the other side of the dock.
The ship even has a wedding license – so you could go the whole hog and come back to celebrate anniversaries (as many people do, apparently).
Rooms are said to offer five metres square more space than equivalent hotels in London.
They feel spacious, even at entry level, though the bathrooms are small. All rooms have tablets rather than a traditional hotel menu and free wifi.

Sunborn had a yacht hotel in a similar spot, from 2002 to 2008, in the same industrial-feeling mooring.
The bigger (and newly refurbished) ship looks directly up at planes taking off from City Airport, which is exciting to behold at night, if less thrilling to witness first thing in the morning.
Guests would be advised to book rooms facing out onto the water. Portside rooms come with considerably less inspiring views of the ExCel centre.

Floating hotels are experiencing something of a worldwide trend – Sunborn has another, five star yacht moored off Gibraltar – and there are more buoyant palaces mooted.
The Krystall hotel, designed by Dutch Docklands and set for completion at the end of 2016, will be moored off Tromso in Norway.
It looks like a floating snowflake and has a glass roof offering views of the Northern Lights.
The same company is behind Ocean Flower in the Maldives – a collection of 185 floating villas in a flower-shaped configuration.

The Five Foot Traveler
Reaching new heights, sunborn super yacht hotel review (gibraltar).
by Sarah Gallo | Feb 15, 2016 | Accommodation Reviews , Europe , Gibraltar , Reviews | 0 comments
Many people have heard of Gibraltar, or at least the Rock of Gibraltar, but likely know little else about this small, British territory. Gibraltar may be known for only a few things: the massive limestone ridge that rises high into the sky overlooking Gibraltar itself (the aforementioned Rock), and its proximity to Morocco. Gibraltar is also a little piece of England in the south of Spain where prices are in British Pounds, shops and restaurants speak English, and they even have those iconic red phone booths on street corners.
For the night before our departure for Morocco, we booked our stay at the Sunborn Super Yacht Hotel in Gibraltar. The Super Yacht is docked in a fairly ideal location; it is a fifteen minute walk from the border with Spain and to the lift that brings you atop the Rock of Gibraltar. The hotel is right on the boardwalk, with access to plenty of bars and restaurants if you'd like a bite to eat when you're out on the town.
Upon entering the Sunborn Super Yacht, I immediately felt like a VIP as I walked through the grand lobby and reception area to check in.
That feeling continued as I opened the door to our room and my jaw dropped. Our modern room with a king sized bed and beautiful balcony overlooking the harbor was outstanding.
Everything was controlled by touch screen displays, curtains opened with the flick of a button, and an open bathroom added a romantic ambiance to our room.
Outside the room things were just as fantastic. The classy and sophisticated restaurant and bar was located on the uppermost deck, and overlooked Gibraltar and the bay.
The top deck also housed the best fitness center I've seen at a hotel, and had a gorgeous view to help you push through tough workouts. The gym was fully equipped with machines for weights and cardio, in addition to free-weights and more.
The infinity pool and adjacent bar are also located on the top level.
The Sunborn Super Yacht Hotel is magnificent. For anyone that enjoys gambling, you won’t want to miss the Sunborn Casino located at the stern either.
We reluctantly left the Sunborn to explore Gibraltar. There is not much really to see, and everything is far more expensive than in Spain. So, it came as no surprise that the trip to the top of Gibraltar Rock was pricey. If you want to go up yourself and walk the length of the Rock, explore some caves, and see the monkeys, it will cost you something in the realm of $100 USD. We decided, however, to drive our car up the Rock for free after 6pm.
We were astounded by the views sunset offered. What a view it was from the top of Gibraltar Rock at night.
If it fits into your schedule, sunset from the Rock of Gibraltar is not to be missed! For accommodation of the highest class, book your stay at the Sunborn Super Yacht Hotel. You most definitely will not be disappointed!

Take a look around the world’s first £120MILLION super yacht casino hotel
Share this with
Sunborn Gibraltar is the world’s first super yacht casino hotel *squeals with excitement*.
To answer your question: Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds.
The mega vessel has already won popularity among football stars, singers and the TOWIE crew.
But don’t make the mistake in thinking it’s reserved only for the elite – because now we can all feel like a big piece of swank with rooms from £179 a night.
The floating hotel opened its gleaming doors in March 2014 and cost an eye-watering 150million Euros.
It’s moored in the Ocean Village Marina, set against a backdrop of the iconic 1,400ft rock that mysteriously controls the weather and is actually home to loads of monkeys which guests can visit (AMAZING).
Despite it having a huge engine and captain’s deck the yacht doesn’t go any where. For now it stays put using hydraulic mooring arms. It means the boat hardly ever rocks, which is good news for those who suffer from sea-sickness/had concerns about drink-related rocking.
Sunborn Gibraltar
- Five star hotel
- Opened March 2014
- 189 rooms from £179 a night
- 142 metres long and seven storeys high
- Spa and fitness centre
- Cocktail lounges and balcony bars
- Fine dining restaurants
- Grand ballroom
Sunborn Gibraltar is the inception of a surge of super yacht hotels. It already has a sister yacht in London near the ExCel and plans are well under way for chains to spring up in Barcelona, North America, South-East Asia, the Middle East and Russia.
A rise in so-called ‘yotels’ would be more than welcomed, if Sunborn Gibraltar is the blueprint for future vessels.
The majority of rooms have a private balcony or terrace area, are fitted with glistening minibars, a spacious bathroom area and – more importantly – have 24 hour room service. Steak at 3.41am? Not a problem.
And if you some how get itchy feet on board the mammoth boat, there’s a plethora of activities to do on land. Off-road safaris, wine tasting at a vineyard and golf a one of Spain’s top courses – all can be arranged by the concierge who’ll sort out a private jet, helicopter or car (if you’re a peasant).
- British overseas territory – meaning you can pay with sterling
- Located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean, sharing a border with Spain
- An area of 2.6 sq miles
- Population of 30,000
- Home to the iconic 1,400ft rock
- There are more roads inside the rock than on the outside in Gibraltar
If all this wasn’t enough, Sunborn Gibraltar is now home to the world’s first super yacht casino.
The state-of-the-art slots, table games and VIP suites – available every day until 4am – opened last month and is already attracting big bawlers from around the world.
It’s official opening coincided with the exciting launch of popular leisure brand La Sala – similar to Nikki Beach and Ocean Beach club. You know, the sorts of awesome places frequented by celebs where champagne spraying is accepted, nay, encouraged.
Most of Gibraltar descended upon Sunborn earlier this month to sample the live music, cocktails and class hosted by La Sala.
Ian Radford, La Sala founder, said: ‘This is really exciting news for both Gibraltar and for the brand. La Sala is so much more than a restaurant, it’s a lifestyle and now we are bringing this unique concept to Ocean Village, offering the ultimate social and dining experience on-board the five star Sunborn yacht hotel.’
You’d be forgiven for thinking Gibraltar is plagued by the stereotype of overweight, tattooed Brits wearing three-quarter-lengths.
It has yet to shrug this off. But it will.
And the introduction of Sunborn has sent shockwaves of swag rippling across the Ocean Village Marina. This is how to experience Gibraltar in style.

Hull No 1 was El Leon, which has traveled extensively, becoming the first Mangusta yacht ever to cross the Atlantic on its own bottom. But She's a 10 Too is the first to feature an enclosed sky lounge rather than an open sundeck. The change is subtle enough in terms of the exterior lines that I don't notice it right away from afar.
