The sequel will focus on the character of Vijay Sethupathi.

The sequel will focus on the character of Vijay Sethupathi.

Initially announced as a single film in April 2021, with principal photography beginning in December 2020, Viduthalai was later revealed to be released in two parts.

Director Vetrimaaran received critical acclaim with last year’s Viduthalai Part 1, although box office success eluded him. Although it did well in the Telugu dubbed version, the original Tamil did not do well at the box office. However, the period crime thriller received rave reviews and has since been called a cult film. Set in 1987, the movie centres around a constable assigned to capture the leader of a separatist movement. The ensemble cast features Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Bhavani Sre, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rajiv Menon, Ilavarasu, Balaji Sakthivel, Saravana Subbiah, Chetan, Munnar Ramesh, and Pavel Navageethan.

Initially announced as a single film in April 2021, with principal photography beginning in December 2020, Viduthalai was later revealed to be released in two parts. While Soori played the main protagonist in Viduthalai Part 1, the sequel will centre around the character of Vijay Sethupathi. The duration of the second part of the film has sparked considerable discussion within the industry. In Chennai, rumours are circulating that Vetrimaran is seriously contemplating the possibility of releasing a third part.

This consideration stems from the fact that the footage already shot for the film has accumulated to a staggering four hours and thirty minutes. Remarkably, this is with only 70 per cent of the film completed, leaving a significant 30 per cent of the filming still to be done. Given the extensive material that has already been captured, it seems likely that a third part might be necessary to fully showcase the story. However, official confirmation about a third part has not been made.

While Viduthalai Part 1 could not earn as much as expected, Vijay Sethupathi’s star power, especially after his recent success with Maharaja, is expected to help Viduthalai Part 2 perform better at the box office. According to reports, some of the scenes shown after Part 1 may have been reshot to better synchronize with the storyline envisioned for the sequels. Geetha Arts is set to release the film in Telugu as they did with the first part.

Police said that the accused, who was renamed Vetrimaran after undergoing a gender-affirming surgery a few months ago, murdered R Nandani as he was enraged that she broke off with him and was getting closer to a colleague at her work.

Vetrimaran was arrested on Sunday. Police said and he confessed to murdering Nandani, who worked in a software company in Chennai.

Police said that Nandani and Vetrimaran were schoolmates at a girl’s school in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district and were close friends. On Saturday, Vetrimaran spent the day with Nandani and took her to the deserted spot, where he chained her hands and legs claiming it was for fun despite her pleas not to do so.

Police said that Vetrimaran doused petrol on her and set her ablaze. Nandani was rushed to a hospital, where she died late on Saturday night.

Tambaram police commissioner Amalraj told NDTV that the two were friends and lived together in Chennai. “No indication yet of any sexual assault. Whether Vetrimaran had displayed violent tendencies earlier is not clear. An investigation is on,” he added.

vetrimaran latest news

Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaaran recently emphasised the importance of shaping the art of cinema as a tool to disseminate political knowledge. He was speaking at the birthday celebration of MP and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan when he made a passionate speech about the country’s current political scenario.

Vetrimaaran recalled that when he wanted to make Asuran (2019), he first met Thirumavalavan to take his advice to ensure his film doesn’t go wrong politically. “When I asked what should be the priority when we deal with such a subject in movies, he told me not to make the mistake of telling that one person can bring about changes in society. Everyone is doing the same mistake. Show that the changes happen through a movement,” said Vetrimaaran.

Vetrimaaran claimed that Tamil cinema had stopped making politically relevant movies for some time. And he also emphasised the need to keep movies well within the realm of politics. “Art is inherently political. But, Thirumavalavan went a step further and told me that our very existence is political. Knowing or unknowingly, we occupy a certain political space. The way we dress, talk, and everything about us is the reflection of the political ideology that we have imbibed. It is because the Dravidian movement took over Tamil cinema, Tamil Nadu remains a secular state and has given us the maturity to resist the influence of various external factors. Cinema is an art form which very easily reaches common people and it’s important to politicise it,” he added.

Vetrimaaran is very vocal about politics in his movies. All his movies deal with an important social issue, be it the horrors of police brutality and custodial torture in Visaranai, or the ills of casteist society in Asuran. He promised he would continue to talk about politics in his movies.

“When the Dravidian movement took over the cinema, there were arguments about doing art for art’s sake and not for the masses. They talked a lot about aesthetic beauty. Yes, that’s also important but no art is complete if it doesn’t touch the lives of people,” he added.

Festive offer

He also alleged that many identities are being removed from cinema. “The art is for the people, and reflecting the people is the art. So we should properly handle this art form if we don’t… already many of our identities are being erased. Be it cladding Thiruvalluvar in saffron, or presenting Rajaraja Cholan as a Hindu king, such things keep happening (in our society). This will also happen in cinema and many identities are (already) removed from the cinema. We should protect our identities,” he said.

It’s noteworthy that Vetrimaaran’s comments have come just days after the release of filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s much-awaited movie, Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which is based on Kalki ’s fictional novel inspired by Rajaraja Cholan.

Vetrimaaran is now busy with his upcoming film, Viduthalai. The film stars Soori and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role. After completing it, he will start shooting Vaadivaasal with Suriya in the lead.
