Galley Equipment List - EVERYTHING in our Yacht Galley

Updated: May 27

When you're first moving onto a yacht deciding what to take can be a bit daunting. To help, here’s a comprehensive list of the equipment and appliances I have in my boat galley after 2+ years of living aboard full time.

Where possible I’ve included Amazon links to the exact product we have or the newer model so you can see what it is. Some of these items we use on a daily basis while others are just often enough to make it worth having them on the boat. If you see an asterisk* it means we really value having it aboard!

Major appliances

Kitchen appliances, kitchen knives, kitchenware.

Other galley items

yacht galley equipment provisioning

Most major appliances in a yacht galley tend to come with the boat itself, although there are some here that we have upgraded as part of the galley customisation process. Everything on this list gets used on an almost daily basis so are definitely worth considering when designing your sailing galley.

Inbuilt Miele 4 burner gas cooktop*

Inbuilt Eno oven*

Under counter Vitrifrigo single drawer freezer*

Under counter Isotherm DR160 two-drawer fridge and freezer*

Galleymate rail mounted BBQ*

Engel portable fridge/freezer *

Of the fridges and freezers the Engel is our favourite and for cooking we use the BBQ the most.

When choosing galley appliances have a think about the products that you already use and go from there. The way you cook in a sailboat kitchen will be a bit different to a house kitchen, but at the same time you won't completely change how and what you do. As a result it's best to start with things you know you like.

Everything we have, except the countertop ice maker, was something I used in the house.

  Breville espresso coffee maker *

Breville coffee grinder *

Large Microwave*

Instant Pot Duo Crisp 11 in 1 Multicooker *

Stick blender : Whisk, blender & food processor*

Juicer (we don't use it very often; the hand juicers & blender get used)

Portable induction cooker

Luvele food vacuum sealer*

Counter-top ice maker *

When deciding which boat appliances to have amoung your galley gear just be aware of power consumption. If the appliances uses more than your electrical battery storage system can handle you may be limited to using it on shore power only.

Cookware is something you'll add to and change as your boat galley evolves over time but this is what we've settled on after a few years of full time boat life.

Saucepans in four different sizes *

Large and medium non-stick frypans *

Kitchen pot *

Medium, oval ceramic casserole dish (also used to bake cakes) *

Large, rectangular glass casserole dish

Large hotplate for the cooktop

Roasting pan

Extra-large stock pot *

We've gone through a few non-stick pans now but everything else has proven to be long lasting.

This is specifically the knives we have in our sailboat galley and doesn't including the various fishing knives, multi tools and sailing knives we have around the boat. I got my knives with the view that I wanted high quality knives that would last a long time in the marine environment and could be sharpened.

Victorinox Chef knife *

Bread knife*

Santoku knives*

Victorinox paring knives  *

Victorinox utility knives

Kitchen shears *

Sharpening stones, knife sharpener  and honing steel*

I can not speak highly enough for the Victorinox knives. We use the paring knives on a daily basis and the chefs knife isn't allowed to be touched by anyone but me! I love that the handles are textured, slip resistant Fibrox, making them safer to use with wet hands

The tableware in our galley came directly from the house, with the only addition being the Palm Outdoor plates (which are brilliant!).

Ceramic dinner set from our house (plates/bowls)*

Cutlery set from our house*

Set of Asian soup spoons *

2x Sistema plastic water jugs  with fully sealable lids*

Extra-large serving platter*

Fished shaped serving platter

2x partitioned serving platters with lids

Palm Outdoor  Plastic plates with non-slip base*

4x small dipping sauce bowls

At the start we considered getting Corelle Dinnerware for the boat as we'd heard it was break resistant. I bought a test plate and gave it to Trent who promptly went out to the front garden and threw it at a rock; it smashed into hundreds of small sharp pieces. After seeing that, the whole crew decided that while ceramic was more breakable, at least when it smashes it's easy to clean up!

Out of all of the sailboat galley equipment we have, the kitchenware has changed the most over time. At the start I took the bare minimum of what I thought I'd use in the galley then added to it as I found a need for something.

Assortment of food storage container with rubber gasket seal *

Spice rack containers *

2x plastic mixing bowls

Metal mixing bowl*

Set of measuring cups*

Set of magnetic measuring spoons *

Measuring jug*

Cooking thermometers*

Kitchen scales*

Oil spray bottle *

Silicone food covers *

5x chopping boards in varying sizes*

Hand juicer*

Icy-pole molds *

Silicone & metal straws*

Collapsible silicone funnels

Selection of long & short tongs with stainless or silicone ends*

Crab crackers and picks

Can opener*

Metal and plastic spatulas*

Silone and plastic turners*

Pasta server

Metal and plastic serving spoons*

Silicone basting brush*

Box grater*

Garlic crusher *

Potato masher

Small metal strainers*

Large, collapsible strainer *

Wooden spoons*

BBQ scraper*

Pizza cutter*

Pineapple corer

Of the additions some are from Amazon while others, like the pizza cutter, are reminders of places we've been.

When choosing the drinkware for our catamaran galley we prioritised vacuum insulated options over ceramic or glass because they help drinks to maintain temperature and are durable.

Vacuum insulated cups  and  bottles  in various sizes and styles from Brumate , Corkcicle , Hydragear (TJ Maxx) and Avanti GoCup (Australia)*

Sistema microwave safe soup cups

Wine glasses ( insulated  and long stem glass)

Shot glasses*

Beer bottle and wine bottle opener*

Bottle stopper*

Plastic liquor measuring glass *

That last measuring glass has been brilliant if you enjoy cocktails. We had three different glass cocktail measuring cups break in the saloon before getting these plastic ones. While they look like medicine cups, the style makes mixing an evening sundowner such a breeze and you can't break them.

When I was tossing around sailboat galley ideas I did not realise how often I'd end up baking bread! It's definitely something to consider when coming up with your own list of yacht galley equipment.

Silicone spatula*

Cooling rack*

Something I would also consider is a rolling pin. I end up using a wine bottle instead but have come across more situations where I needed one now than I ever did in the house.

Other kitchen accessories

Here's some of the other boat galley accessories we have and use aboard.

3x cork hot pads *

Spoon rest *

Oven mittens *

8x mesh produce bags *

Roasting string

Netted food cover *

Boat galley accessories: essential cooking tools for cruising sailboats

Nica Waters

  • Nica Waters
  • April 7, 2022

After 30 years trying out various boat galley accessories, long-term cruising sailor Nica Waters offers her top recommendations for kitting out your sail boat's kitchen with a few tried and tested items from our Tech Editor Fox Morgan's Dehler 36 galley…

yacht galley equipment

A well founded boat galley with just the right accessories for your food prepping style can make life on board an absolute joy.

Nica writes “We recently rebuilt the galley on our 28’ cutter, Calypso , the boat we’ve owned and cruised intermittently on since 1992. This time, using the wisdom gained over the past 30 years, we incorporated more usable storage areas, installed a large undermount sink, and even splurged on Corian counters.”

“As we moved aboard in April of 2021, we made sure that the galley items we brought with us are all ones we love and use frequently. After all, having the right tools makes cooking even more of a pleasure.”

the joy of a tidy boat galley

The Marine Tech Editor, Fox Morgan loves their linear galley as it is especially well organised with just the right bit of kit in just the right places.

“Working in a confined space with limited storage, it’s a balancing act to make sure you have enough galley kit on board and don’t lack things that would make your life easier. Being judicious about what comes aboard can pay off handsomely both in terms of organization as well as the sense of space. For example, despite being a self-proclaimed cutting board addict, I had to be honest and realize that most of the time I use the same board over and over. I don’t need to take 15 on the boat! Almost everything needs to serve double duty; almost nothing is single use.”

If you’re just setting up a galley on the boat, here are some boat galley accessories you might not have thought of…

Boat galley accessories – knives

At the core of a good galley is its knives . You do not need to buy a complete knife set, which often include a number of knives you don’t need, but rather buy individual ones.

A 9” (or 7”) chefs knife, a serrated blade for cutting bread, and a smaller paring knife are essential; the next one I’d get is a long bladed boning knife for filleting your fresh catch of fish.

Find knives that fit your hand and feel good; some people prefer heavier ones while other people like light blades. Stainless steel blades will dull faster than carbon steel blades, but carbon steel blades will rust. Ceramic blades hold their edge for a long time but are notoriously hard to sharpen.

ZWILLING Chef’s Knife, Blade length: 20 cm, Wide blade, Special stainless steel/Plastic handle

A chef’s knife is an absolute must, ideally you’ll have more than one of these. As a boat galley accessories go, this is an area not to be scrimped on. Buy good quality. There’s a chance it will also be used for cutting and trimming lines on deck at some point too.

zwilling bread knife

ZWILLING Twin Pollux Bread Knife, steel, Silver/Black

A bread knife is one of the staple boat galley accessories, you might be cutting bread with it… sometimes it’s useful lashed to a pole for lopping a rope off your propeller too. Make sure you buy a good one of these!

Price £30.95

Buy Zwilling bread knife via Amazon.co.uk

ceramic knife

Ceramic Blade Paring Knife with Sheath

Tech Editor, Fox Morgan says “Onboard Boogie Nights there’s two paring knives. One steel the other is ceramic and 9 times out of 10 I’ll reach for the ceramic blade. It is light and I like the white blade. It is SUPER sharp and I have already sliced the tips of my fingers off when not paying attention chopping an onion one day while distracted and chatting with my co-skipper. The blade protector stays in place and the knife lives in the cutlery drawer with other stuff. It’s a few years old now but still sharp and still my first choice from the drawer. It’s also great for slicing mooring lines for splicing or repairs. watch out for the super sharp blade really near the handle though. That can catch you out”

food prepping in the cockpit

Food prepping in the cockpit on a very hot day. Ceramic paring knife in hand. Look carefully, they can be difficult to see with their white blades. They do come in brighter colours, I would recommend trying a bright colour for safety.

Having chosen your knives, you need to have a place to store them safely, and a way to sharpen them. One of our galley upgrades was a pair of magnetic knife strips which we’ve attached to the underside of the deck in the galley area.

boat-galley-accessories-knife-rack

under counter magnetic strip – doubled up for extra security

You do need to make sure these powerful magnets are placed far from any compass or autopilot. We have two strips so the knives are secured in two places along the blade. Our stainless steel knives hold well, which is an indication of the quality of the stainless steel they are made from. (note from Tech Ed: beware that some stainless blades are not fero-magnetic due to their metal composition. So double check this if buying new blades and intend yo hang them safely on magnets.)

If you store your knives in a general cutlery drawer, be prepared to sharpen them even more frequently as the blade edges will be .amaged and dulled by contact with other utensils, although some knives do come with blade protectors that slide or clip onto the knife blade to keep it tip top and to avoid accidental injury when reaching into the cutlery drawer.

A knife sharpener can range from a simple whetstone all the way up to an electric knife sharpener ; our preferred tool is an easy-to-use hand sharpener that guides the knife to the correct angle.

Though this item possibly fails the ‘multi-use’ test, a Microplane zester is another must-have cutting tool in Calypso’s galley. Coming with its own guard, this slender rasp-style grater makes quick work of ginger, garlic, and parmesan cheese and stores flat; it’s also relatively easy to clean since you have access to both sides of the tool.

Boat galley accessories – tongs

Everyone has their own preference as to tools to use to turn food in the pan. While spatulas and spoons, forks and even chopsticks all have their place in the galley, I can’t speak highly enough of these locking tongs .

OXO Good Grips Tongs – 12 inch

We have two pairs as we use them so much. One might be in use at the stove, turning meat or stirring pasta, while the other is being used to toss salad. I find the 12-inch size to be far more versatile than the longer ones, and personally find the silicone-tipped ones go gummy too quickly. Just be careful if using these with a nonstick pan surface.

Price: £27.99

Colourworks Mini Tongs

These Mini tongs are useful in so many ways around the galley. You can pull a hot packet of wet food out of the the boiling pan with them or give a small pot a stir or flip your bacon with them. These fit into places where the larger tongs do not. Silicon tips can also help to preserve nonstick if you have that on your pans. Tongs of all shapes and sizes are considered one of the most essential boat galley accessories.

Price: £3.49

Buy Mini tongs from The Range

Boat galley accessories – blenders

Rounding out the hand tools category is an immersion blender .

When I lived on land, I used my beloved Cuisinart food processor almost daily. Space and power constraints on the boat mean it can’t come with us cruising, but I really did want something that could do some pureeing and fine chopping tasks.

A good galley alternative is an immersion blender. This stick blender does require an electrical outlet nearby, but fits into small spaces and larger pots with ease.

We call it the boat motor; it makes a lovely smooth vegetable soup as well making quick work of frozen fruit and yogurt for a smoothie.

The accompanying small bowl and blade means that smooth hummus and other luxuries are possible on board.

You can buy kits that come without some of the extra attachments (we in particular question the masher attachment), but they’re more expensive.

Braun MultiQuick Hand Blender

As used for over 10 years on the Tech Eds boat, this tried and tested hand blender has been pressed into action offshore many times, whipping up cake batters and chopping tomatoes and anything else we care to throw at it. One of the best value for money items ever introduced to the galley. It’s powered from a small inverter. Though, sometimes cake making goes a bit awry… sense of humour required when this happens. Thankfully we were moored up when this happened. This Braun hand blender was the secret weapon used in the great Atlantic bake-off during the Azab 2019 race.

Best pots and pans

Made-in stainless clad saute pan.

On board, I tend to cook with an eye toward cleanup. Like most cruisers, we’re water-conscious, and one way to minimize water use is to create fewer dirty dishes.

One-pot meals are a good way to put this mantra into practice. A surprise favorite pan for this is a stainless steel 3.5-quart saute pan (if we were a family of 4 still on board, I might like a larger version.)

This straight-sided skillet goes from stove top to oven flawlessly; the tight fitting lid for it means it can also work to cook rice or pasta. Watch for a handle that’s short enough to fit in the oven.

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Inox Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker with Long Handle, 5 Litre / 22 cm

Pressure cookers are another conservation tactic, working to save on cooking fuel as well as time spent in the galley. The premise behind these pots is that they cook foods at a higher temperature by applying pressure, meaning that cooking takes less time.

For example, if we decide at 5 pm that we’d like black bean soup for dinner; the pressure cooker takes beans from dried to yummy in half an hour. This pot doubles as my largest mixing bowl as well as a regular, non-pressurized pot for pasta.

Unfortunately, the Fagor brand we use has been discontinued, but this recommended one has been in use on my friend Behan’s boat for the past ten years.

Price: £132.53

Instant Pot Duo Nova 7-in-1 Smart Cooker, 5.7L – Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Sauté Pan, Yoghurt Maker, Steamer and Food Warmer

If you have the electricity and storage space to spare, multi-cookers (essentially, electric pressure cookers with a few other bells and whistles) are all the rage in the United States. I’ve never used one but have yet to meet anyone who is not wildly impressed. Many boats are shifting away from propane as a cooking fuel especially as lithium batteries are becoming more widespread, and a multi-cooker is a favourite boat galley accessory for cruisers with an electric galley.

tefal ingenio pans five star review galley accessories

Tefal Ingenio Essential Non-Stick Pots and Pans Set, 5-Piece, Starter Kit

The Tefal Ingenio pans are also a boat galley favourite as they can go from stove top to oven to cool box and back again with their removable handles and clip lids to stop spillage.

The Tech Ed writes “These have been in use onboard SV Boogie Nights for around 8 years now.

tefall ingenio pans in use at sea

Tefal Ingenio pans, with quick release handle removed for better balanced pans when sailing offshore. Stackable and versatile. An excellent investment for the galley.

The small frying pan is looking a bit tired because it get’s the most use but the clip handle, lids and pans are still going strong. The good thing is that you can buy the pans individually so you can make your own set that suits your particular galley needs. The handles are easy to find, often in European supermarkets too.”

Best of the rest

Other favorite boat galley accessories and tools are personal: there’s the wide-mouth thermos I use to make yogurt, the citrus juicer I bought in an eclectic hardware store in the Dominican Republic, the French Press coffee maker we use every morning.

Zulay Metal Lemon Lime Squeezer – Manual Citrus Press Juicer

If lemons and Lime are your thing, then much like a garlic press, you’ll love this and it will make life just a little neater. Cocktails and cooking are a little bit better with a dash of citrus. The boat galley accessory you never knew you needed…

Frieling USA Double Wall Stainless Steel French Press Coffee Maker with Zero Sediment Dual Screen

If you’re a coffee lover then a decent press will really enhance your mornings. Avoid glass and go for something sturdy, reliable and without consumable parts, such as paper filters. The dual mesh inner keeps the coffee grounds away from your cup and you’ll have enough in this press for more than one cup.

Luci Solar String Lights + Phone Charger with 100 Lumens

One special tool, although not a galley-specific item, that has immeasurably improved our dining life at anchor is these Luci string lights . Solar powered, they clip easily to our bimini top and provide light and ambience for dinners in the cockpit.

My husband was skeptical at first and now is the first person to reach for them when the sun starts to go down!

Setting Up the Perfect Boat Galley

March 19, 2021 by Travis Turgeon Leave a Comment

Functional wooden boat galley

Living on a boat comes with countless challenges, but few can cause more frustration than a poorly designed galley. It’s tough enough to cook a great-tasting meal that everyone enjoys in a standard kitchen, but managing that in a swaying, confined space with limited resources can make you want to hurl yourself overboard. A perfect boat galley is well-designed, highly functional, and safe to use. Below, we cover everything you’ll need to know to make the most out of your space.

The Boat Galley

Boat galleys vary in a ton of different ways. Size, layout, storage, proximity – the list goes on. Each boat will require a slightly different setup than the next, but certain features are beneficial across the board.

Boat Galley Basics

Boat Galley Location

From cooking and cleaning to remaining mobile and social, the location of a galley can dramatically impact your culinary experience at sea. The galley should be accessible from both the cockpit and saloon, well ventilated and in an area that is less prone to boat roll than other areas. Placement at the foot of the boat’s companionway is ideal, as it satisfies the three considerations mentioned above. Those with multiple roles on the boat will enjoy this location as they make trips above and below deck. Each boat will have a different setup, though, so be sure to consider the specifics for you and your crew. What works for some will be less than ideal for others.

Boat Galley Layout

The shape and layout of your space will dictate how you set up your kitchen and arrange your boat galley accessories. Three standard layouts for a boat galley exist – Linear, L-Shaped, or U-Shaped. L-Shaped and U-Shaped galleys are more commonly found on offshore cruisers, as the design provides more support and security when the boat is rolling. They also keep spaces and cooking accessories nearby for a busy evening as the lead cook.

While these confined layouts are more suitable for safety and convenience, they reduce the overall ability to be creative in the kitchen. Less space means you have to be more mindful of the equipment you’re using, as well as how many dishes you can prepare at once. It would be best if you determined your galley’s layout by evaluating how many people are on board, how often you’ll be cooking during open-water passages, and how creative a cook you are in the first place.

Functionality

Gimballed Boat Appliances

A gimbal is a single-axis support system on which objects pivot to stay level, even when their surroundings are not. Having gimbaled boat appliances is essential to cooking safely, especially when making long passages in inclement weather. The most common boat appliance to mount on a gimbal is a stove and oven. Gimballed boat appliances are lockable when not in use, so you can use the equipment as usual when at anchor or docked in the marina.

Logical Refrigeration Placement

While modern boat galleys are becoming more logical in their design and layout, there are often things that leave us scratching our heads when looking at older vessels. Unfortunately, one of the most common issues we see is the placement of refrigeration and freezer units. Whether due to space restrictions or simple neglect, we see these cooling units installed near engine rooms, ovens, or in areas with minimal ventilation. For obvious reasons, placement in these areas will drastically reduce energy efficiency and drive up costs. When looking to buy a used boat or renovate your existing galley, make energy efficiency a primary consideration.

Boat Galley Convenience Features

Magnetic knife storage in a boat galley

Double-Basin Sink

While this is, of course, a subjective opinion, many offshore cruisers prefer to equip their boat’s galley with a deep, double-basin sink. Deeper basins offer a few advantages, although not every person will see them as essential.

The main advantage is the ability to soak your dishes without worrying about water overflowing when the boat rolls. However, if you’re only cooking for a few people, you can manage this with a shallow sink as well. The selling point for most is the double basins. With two basins, you can use one for washing and draining while the other serves as a soaking station. After all, efficiency is the name of the game in such a small and limited cooking space. If you aren’t using one of the basins, you can increase your counter space by placing a fitted cutting board or surface over the second basin. Depending on the meal, you may require more space or an assistant in the kitchen.

Locking Cupboard, Drawer, and Oven Latches

Installing lockable latches to anything with a swinging door or a sliding drawer is the best way to prevent things from coming open during a passage. Not only are you risking breaking your kitchenware, but you’re potentially turning ordinary household items into dangerous, high-speed projectiles. These latches are cheap, easy to install and provide peace of mind for a more relaxed journey.

Vertical Cupboard Dowels

Another infinitely helpful boat galley accessory is vertical dowels, installations to keep glasses in place and prevent breakage. You can also use dowels to stack plates and bowls, although most find the best use for them to hold their precious wine glasses and beer mugs. Ensure you won’t be drinking your wine from plastic cups by installing these boat galley accessories in your cupboards.

Wall-Mounted Racks

Having wall-mounted racks in strategic locations around the galley can help the chef stay organized and uncluttered without sacrificing accessibility for items like oil and spices. If your wall rack doesn’t have a security band or horizontal dowel to keep items secure, you can easily install a bungee cord to keep things from moving around.

Boat Galley Safety Features

Wooden boat galley with kitchen sink

Grab Rails and Handles

When it comes to the boat galley, you need to consider safety a top priority. If not, you’ll quickly find out why this is such a pressing matter. One of the biggest threats to a cook is the prospect of being tossed across the galley. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is by having handles and grab-rails within reach, although some prefer tether systems. The debate will likely continue through eternity, but most long-term cruisers seem to prefer handles and grab-rails as it keeps them mobile in case of emergency.

Tether System

Depending on who you ask, tether systems that hold a cook in place are extremely useful or extremely dangerous. Most seem to think they are more dangerous than beneficial, but those with knee or back injuries may find them invaluable in keeping them stable and safe in the kitchen. When cooking on a boat during a rough passage, being tied in place directly in front of hot liquids, fire and pans can be dangerous. If any of those things spill in your direction, burns and bruises are sure to follow. Handles and grab-rails are a common alternative to tether systems, but debates on a better design can become heated depending on who you ask.

Boat Galley Upgrade Considerations

checkered floor boat galley

Another method to improve refrigeration efficiency is to create an “organization plan.” Installing shelves and drawers will help with organization and space efficiency, and using color-coded labels can help with the quick identification of any item.

Hand and Foot Pump Faucets

Using your freshwater supply to clean dishes is far from economical, so installing a hand or foot pump to the faucet is a great way to minimize the use of your limited resources. Cleaning your dishes with seawater is not only easy, but the resources to do so are completely free. You can arrange hand pumps and foot pumps however you prefer, but a common method is to hook a hand pump to freshwater and a foot pump to seawater. Just clean your dishes with soap and saltwater, and give a quick rinse with fresh water to conserve your onboard resources. You can take the conservation efforts a step further by filling a spray bottle with fresh water to rinse dishes. Although a hand or foot pump uses minimal water, a spray bottle uses even less.

Stainless Steel Boat Appliances

Everything from your kitchen sinks to refrigerators and stovetops is subject to deterioration from salt while at sea. Most new vessels come equipped with all stainless steel appliances for just that reason, but certain models cut costs by supplying the galley with boat appliances made of other materials. If you have boat appliances or kitchenware constructed with anything other than stainless steel, it’s worth considering an upgrade. By spending money on items constructed with high-quality material now, you can avoid higher-cost replacements down the road.

Boat Galley Lighting

Poor lighting in your boat’s galley can create a dull and uninspired atmosphere, so upgrading your existing lights to LEDs can help liven the mood. Apart from your mental health, LEDs are far more efficient than standard bulbs, which reduces long-term energy costs. Consider installing additional lights to areas above the sink, stove, or countertops. Some LED lights can switch from red to white light, which is beneficial when setting the appropriate mood.

Port / Hatch Enlargements – Ventilation

Your boat’s galley is the space that needs the most ventilation – for comfortability, safety, and health. When cooking on a boat with propane, it’s crucial to have a well-ventilated kitchen space. Natural gases tend to be denser than air, which means that the gases will “fall” beneath the lower deck if a leak goes unnoticed. Once below deck, the heat can cause combustion to occur, endangering everyone on board or near the boat. Improper use of propane has killed and injured many cruisers in the past, so be sure to prepare appropriately if you decide to use propane as a fuel source. On that note, install gas monitors for further protection.

Galley Cookware and Accessories

With a small amount of planning and preparation, cooking on a boat in a small galley can be enjoyable. Some of the most important considerations to make are the essentials and non-essentials for kitchen cookware and boat galley accessories.

Boat Galley Essentials

pressure cooker boat kitchen

Pressure Cooker

Pressure cookers are the perfect answer to your multi-purpose needs in a boat kitchen. With the steam vent left open, a pressure cooker serves as a standard pot for all daily meals you would prepare in a kitchen at home.

Closed, your cooking time decreases drastically, making those long-haul passages in inclement weather nothing short of a breeze. Although most people who venture into the cruising lifestyle don’t have a ton of previous experience with pressure cookers, the learning curve is exceptionally shallow. You can master it in nearly no time.

Nesting Pots and Pans

Dual-purpose kitchen cookware covers all of your bases without stocking up on too many unnecessary items. Further, having nesting cookware is the key ingredient in keeping storage space efficient and uncluttered. Simply put, nesting cookware cascades in size, allowing you to stack each item inside one another. Once you clean them, stack them together, and viola – efficiency at its finest.

Tin Foil and Freezer Bags

Two of the most challenging items to find in foreign countries, whether in the south Pacific or the Caribbean, are heavy-duty tin foil and freezer bags. Keeping your perishables fresh and delicious becomes extremely difficult without the proper boat galley accessories, and these two items are at the top of the list.

Anything and Everything Silicone

Silicone products are a full-time cruiser’s best friend, making life easy in a variety of ways. Silicone mats allow you to bake without using oil or parchment, are easy to clean, save on storage space, and provide slip-resistant surfaces for any area in the galley. Collapsible mixing bowls and measuring cups are unbreakable, light, and space-efficient.

Almost all silicone kitchen items can serve multiple purposes, as they are heat resistant, soft, and have gripping properties. Not only are silicone products highly functional, but they are also stylish and colorful – bringing even the dullest of kitchens to life.

High-Quality Knives

Having just a few high-quality, sharp knives on board makes a world of difference for the seasoned chef. In this case, quality over quantity has never been so important. Stainless steel material is the go-to in saltwater environments. High-quality knives make it easy to serve multiple purposes without sacrificing storage space or functionality.

Boat Galley Storage

Living on a boat will turn even the messiest of us into overly neat and well-organized human beings, but this only happens through trial and error without proper direction. Luckily, information is right at our fingertips these days.

Dry Storage

dry food storage boat

Storage Hammocks

Keeping dry goods such as fruits, vegetables, and spices in a storage hammock is a great way to conserve your cupboard space in the boat galley. Storage hammocks are just what you would imagine them to be. They are small, mesh nets that hang as a hammock does above your sink or stovetop – just try to keep them out of the way of cabinet doors and drawers.

Many experienced boat cooks keep the essential items here for easy access and quick use while preparing meals. The hammock swings just slightly when sailing through rough seas, but they are far from a nuisance if you install them in an ideal location.

Rotating Cupboard Shelves

Instead of pulling out every spice jar to reach the back of the cupboard, install a rotating shelf to make life easier on yourself. Emptying your whole cabinet during passage is a huge inconvenience, and keeping everything secure can become a hassle. You can install rotating shelves as multi-tiered vertical fixtures, so you can use each shelf to organize in a sensible way for your galley.

Refrigerator Storage

refrigerator masonjar boat storage

Knowing What Needs Cooled

Not all foods need cold storage for safe consumption. Having a good understanding of which items in your kitchen need cooling will save you space and energy, so familiarize yourself with the requirements of the foods you keep onboard.

Grains, rice, flour, fruits, vegetables, and many other items sealed in jars don’t need cooling for healthy consumption. Follow this LINK for estimated keep times of various food items commonly held on a boat.

Top-Loading Refrigerator

Generally, top-loading refrigeration units are open and empty spaces without bins or trays for a personalized organization. When people first try to figure out the best way to organize their cold foods, they often just stack things wherever seems easy and convenient. For most, this leads to developing bad habits that ultimately cost them money as they continually reduce their energy efficiency. We recommend using dividers, trays, and compartments to organize. Over time, you will learn to optimize your storage space – making life less stressful in the galley.

Freezer Storage

freezer storage ice cream

Color-Coded Mesh Bags

Having a storage system for your frozen goods is the best way to minimize the time that the freezer door stays open for unnecessary reasons. A standard method for doing this is to have color-coded mesh bags to store frozen items. When looking for fish, poultry, vegetables, or anything else, having a color system reduces time spent fumbling through storage looking for something specific.

Freezer Placement

When buying a new or used boat, your cooling units will likely already have a home. If you’re planning to replace or upgrade your freezer, however, install it below the waterline for a lower ambient temperature – this will help with energy conservation, especially in warmer locations like the tropics.

Keeping Pests Under Control

Cardboard and Paper Labels – Cockroaches

Cockroaches are among the biggest nuisances on a boat, especially when stocked with long-term provisions. Small spaces between cardboard mesh and underneath paper labels are the ideal breeding ground for cockroaches – the reason behind most boat infestations. Some cockroaches species carry egg capsules inside their bodies, and before dying, they release dozens of offspring. Getting rid of cockroaches is extremely difficult if not identified promptly. When provisioning, your best bet is to entirely remove any paper or cardboard from every item before placing your goods into storage. Once you remove the labels, use a permanent marker to indicate the contents of the container. Instead of using cardboard boxes as storage, invest in hard plastic tubs and trays to minimize the otherwise continuous battle. Air-tight bins and plastic bags are low-cost and efficient in keeping cockroaches at bay.

If you find yourself with cockroaches scuttling across your floors, you need to act quickly. While there are dozens of strategies for clearing your boat, each will require a different approach. Some cockroach species are easier to eradicate than others, and it seems that everyone has different results with the same methods.

Your best bet is to employ several of the following simultaneously:

  • Cockroach Gel-Bait
  • Poison Powders
  • Fumigation When Necessary (this method requires you to vacate the vessel for 48 hours and remove any cookware, cutlery, and utensils beforehand)

Air-Tight Plastic Storage – Weevils

Weevils are another common onboard pest, and they can be majorly destructive to your provisions. Food items such as rice, nuts, flour, and beans can become infested quickly if not correctly stored in air-tight plastic containers. These foods act like magnets for weevils, and they are the perfect breeding ground for their nearly unnoticeable larvae. Even when treated with pesticides, things like flour provide the ideal habitat for weevil larvae to flourish.

If you are unfortunate enough to open up your grain or flour containers to find weevils, there are a couple of tried and true ways to get rid of the infestation. For flour, simply microwave the product for five minutes or longer, or bake it in the oven at 200 degrees F for 30 minutes. After heating, let cool before storing in an airtight plastic container and store with bay leaves to repel future weevils. For food items such as grains or nuts, you can place them in a deep freezer for several hours to several days. For the freezing method, you need to have a freezer that reaches temperatures well below freezing.

Keeping Clean – Ants

Whether on land or at sea, ants are among the most common pests in a kitchen environment. Sugary drinks, crumbs, and unattended spills are all reasons for ants to come aboard, so clean diligently everywhere on the boat – not just in the galley. You should take preventative measures before you ever see a single ant on the boat to ensure that a full-blown infestation doesn’t occur. Once ants make their way on board, you need to eradicate the problem at the source.

Preventative measures include:

  • Creating Barriers on Dock Lines (Petroleum Jelly)
  • Strategically Placed Ant Traps and Poisons in High-Risk Areas
  • Whole or Ground Cloves Placed Near Sugar Containers
  • Keep Sugars, Syrups, Honey, etc. in Sealed Plastic Bins

You can manage an existing ant infestation in various ways, although using several of the following methods at once is e asy and effective:

  • Poisons (Borax and Sugar Mixture)

Galley Cookbooks

The Boat Galley Cookbook: 800 Everyday Recipes and Essential Tips for Cooking Aboard, by Carolyn Shearlock

The space is tight, the ingredients are limited, and you just caught a fish you’ve never even considered preparing before. The boat-friendly recipes and tips in this book are sure to help out any long-term cruiser in the galley, but especially the unseasoned, first-time liveaboard chefs. In some parts of the world, chickens come whole, fish come uncleaned, and you need bones for your broth. Making bread and yogurt can also be a daunting task with limited resources. Taking raw, simple ingredients and turning them into full-blown authentic dishes inspired by cuisines worldwide is easy with this galley cookbook. Make sure this book is onboard – you’ll find plenty of uses for it.

Feasts Afloat: 150 Recipes for Great Meals From Small Spaces, by Jennifer Trainer Thompson

This book addresses one of the biggest problems with cooking on a boat, and it mentions it directly in its title – limited space. While other boat galley cookbooks try to create complex recipes with unusual ingredients and specialized cookware, this book takes a different approach – bringing you straightforward, easy-to-cook meals without sacrificing taste or quality. You can cook a new boat-friendly recipe from this book every day for nearly half a year, although you are sure to find a few weekly staples along the way. The printed, high-quality color photos inspire the boat chef and create a mouthwatering appetite for everyone on board. If you only keep a couple of cookbooks on board, this should be one of them.

Galley Tips and Tricks

boat drinking snacking setup

  • Before preparing a meal, take out every ingredient you’ll need and situate them in a way that will maximize workflow. Fumbling through your cramped and limited storage becomes frustrating when you need something at a moment’s notice.
  • Decide on the items you find most useful, and make sure you have them with you – even if it means sacrificing a bit of storage space. If you eat vegetables with every meal, you can reduce the time spent in front of your cutting board by buying a heavy-duty hand dicer. If you’re a skilled fisherman and eat seafood often, having a vacuum sealer can be a lifesaver. Tailor your kitchen equipment directly to your needs, rather than using the “blanket method” for preparation.
  • If you don’t have silicone mats, use damp towels to prevent plates and bowls from sliding across surfaces. You can take this idea a step further by applying a small amount of rubber cement to the bottom of plates and bowls. Once dried, few materials will grip surfaces more tightly.
  • Wear a full-length apron to ensure that you won’t suffer burns if hot liquids spill as the boat rolls during passage.
  • Old tube socks serve as excellent protection for precious wine and liquor bottles. Some will choose to invest in proper fixtures to make sure breakage does not occur, but you can just as easily prevent this from happening with towels and socks.
  • When preparing freshly caught fish, the smell on your hands may linger for hours or even days. Washing your hands with vinegar is a sure-fire way to get the odor off right away.

Gimballed Cooker Housing

Why choose gn espace marine galley systems, energy efficiency.

Full insulation, correctly specified components, and clever thinking have allowed us to create an energy-efficient range of electric cooking appliances without any compromise on cooking performance.

Our induction hobs heat the pot and not the Ceran glass. Serious cooks love induction hobs because they heat up incredibly quickly and are very responsive to control. To save energy, the pot detection feature switches off the hob when the pot is removed.

Your safety has been a key consideration in the design of our marine cookers. Induction hobs stay cool and considerably enhance safety, as well as comfort, in the galley. Sturdy sea rails and pan clamps prevent pans from sliding on the hob. A single-handed operation door lock keeps the oven door securely closed. To prevent the danger of hot food sliding out of the oven when you open the door, our oven shelves have safety stops.

The runners have a positive pull-out end stop, as well as integrated fiddles, regardless of whether you use the wire shelf or Gastronorm containers.

Additionally, the cooker is secured by means of a solid harbour lock and inversion-proof gimbal mounts.

Performance

Our induction hobs are packed with features that make cooking a real joy. Matching the speed and responsiveness of traditional gas burners, our induction hobs boast many other useful features, such as a 2.5kW boost function, auto-simmer, a dual zone bridge function for large fish-kettle cooking, as well as melt and keep warm settings.

The oven has a powerful heating element which surrounds the fan. This ensures even heat distribution throughout the cavity and allows you to cook on three levels at once. Our unique ECO Fan setting reaches the most widely used oven temperature (180°c) in less than half the time it takes for a traditional electric oven to reach its higher equivalent temperature. This saves you time and valuable electricity.

A quick wipe after cooking is all you need to keep the induction hob looking good. Unlike normal ceramic hobs, the induction hob heats the pots and not the Ceran induction surface itself. As a result there is no danger of spillages burning on.

The oven cavity has been designed to avoid dirt traps, and there is a removable oven roof (for electric models), as well as a self-cleaning grill element, to help. All the hob and oven accessories are made from marine grade stainless steel to ensure easy cleaning.

Cooking & Galley Equipment

A boat galley or kitchen is the area below deck and is often overlooked by boat owners and the importance of keeping a well-stocked galley with the appropriate cooking and galley equipment. Oftentimes boat owners have their household cooking items including pans, utensils, and coolers serve double duty. This is an inconvenient option that adds additional trips from your car and the parking lot dockside. It can also lead to breakage and or damage of these items. Wholesale Marine offers a great selection of boat galley equipment for all your needs from cookware, BBQ grills, fans, marine refrigerators , and other 12-volt appliances. We have you covered with everything except for the food.

Boats are not equipped with the same electrical components as your home. Many boat owners and passengers make the mistake of trying to run high voltage common household appliances on voltage systems not equipped to handle this. This can lead to blown fuses and or damage to the appliances.

Wholesale Marine stocks many 12-volt options including the boat fans , that keep air circulating through the boat galley and the Burton Wet and Dry Vacuum for all those messes that need to be swept up.  While boat fans and vacuums are important items for galley, no boat galley is complete without a coffee maker. Choose from the Quick Cup Travel Mug size or the Travel Coffee 4-Cup model for the convenience of coffee while you are away from home.

Boat galleys provide the added convenience of being able to cook meals even in stormy or inclement weather. Wholesale Marine’s inventory of galley equipment from Coleman , Boat Mates , and Magma Grills makes serving up anything you need to stay dry and out of the weather.

For the best in boat galley equipment and the rest of your boating needs, Wholesale Marine is your one-stop-shop. Our Customer Loyalty Program offers discounts on future purchases. Must Have Galley Equipment For Sailboat Cooking 2024

Must have galley equipment for sailboat cooking.

The must-have galley equipment for sailboat cooking is so completely different from the list of things needed when cooking in a house, that galley cooking was one of the things that threw me most about living on a sailboat.

You simply can’t use all the fancy equipment that you’ve come to rely on over the years.

You don’t have the space, the electricity, or even the water to clean it all up afterward! You need low-maintenance cooking equipment and you need to be picky about the essentials.

Now that we’ve adjusted to life aboard I’d say we’re pretty well versed on the galley equipment you’re going to really need, the galley equipment you’re going to want and the galley equipment you’re going to have to learn to live without.

We’ve put together a list to help you out, so you don’t end up making the same mistakes (and wasting the same money!) as we did.

Galley Equipment Buying Guide

Every time I’m eyeing up some fancy new piece of equipment for the galley that I’m convinced is absolutely essential, Adam has to reign me in a little.

There just isn’t the space to have whatever your heart desires in such a tiny square foot boat! Here are the things we consider before making a purchase for our sailboat galley.

Do I really need it?

a galley on a sailboat

With such limited space on board, it’s a question we have to ask ourselves before we buy anything new for the boat, but is especially true in the galley.

Hot Chocolate actually has great storage space, but the galley is small and there is just enough space for food and plates.

If we start adding crazy amounts of extra galley equipment they have to be stored somewhere else, and Adam has to forgo space in his tool cupboard, which never goes down well!

How much power/water does it need?

Galley equipment that drains power is a no go unless you spend all your time hooked up to the dock. We are lucky and have a great solar set up that allows us to use a little extra, but things that use huge amounts of power are just a no-go.

Water is the same. If it’s going to use loads of water or take hours to wash up (think things like juicers that have loads of tiny parts to clean), we avoid it like the plague!

Can I even use it in a small space?

a sailboat galley

Like I said, the galley in Hot Chocolate is tiny so we really have to think this one through. Things like big coffee machines or electric mixers just won’t fit on the workspace.

Where can we stow it?

If it’s a big piece of galley equipment it will need a home for passages. Is it going to fit somewhere you can get to easily? Because if the only home for it is in the bottom of some hard to get to cupboard then chances are you’re going to stow it and then never use it again!

Is it ‘boat proof’?

There are things you need to take into consideration on a boat that you don’t need to think about on land. Salt water is a quick killer of certain metals, and constant motion and easily breakable items don’t sit well together!

We bought some lovely glasses once without thinking about the fact they had slightly rounded bottoms. They were completely unsuitable for boat life as they were so unstable, and all broke within a few months!

Buy high quality galley equipment that will last and that you can rely on in months to come in the middle of the ocean. Stainless steel is a favourite of most liveaboards because it’s so rust resistant. I’ve got more ideas for you below!

Can we afford it ?

a galley on a sailboat full of galley equipment

Owning a boat can be expensive in itself. We didn’t start adding to our galley equipment until we were a year into our liveaboard adventure and knew exactly what we needed.

I do wish we’d bought a few things before we started, as having them did improve our lives a lot! But at least we had time to be sure of what we needed before we splashed out.

Read on to find out what we ended up really needing for the galley. If you’re new to boat life then it’s worth picking out a few of the things from this list that you know you’ll use all the time and considering some of the others in a few weeks or months of living aboard.

For more liveaboard galley tips and a whole lot more check out our How To Run Away To Sea guidebook . We wrote down literally everything we wish we’d known before starting this adventure – from planning, to finding the dream boat, to making this lifestyle last!

Essential Galley Equipment For Sailboat Cooking

Slow cooker.

These slow cookers are absolutely fantastic for easy, warm meals. They also come into their own when prepping for offshore passages, as they can be used alongside your normal oven.

Being able to just shove the ingredients into a pot and then worry about more important matters saves so much time and hassle. It’s a great piece of galley equipment for sailboat cooking!

a small blender in a sailboat galley

Get. A. Blender. We lasted a year without a blender and I’m not sure why I didn’t buy one sooner (I’m writing this after eating a delicious homemade broccoli and potato soup).

It’s great for whipping up healthy soups and smoothies with leftover fruit and veg, and I also use it to mix cake mix together.

We only have a small blender that we can run off solar but we’ve found it’s plenty good enough, and not needing mains electricity is a huge bonus (or we’d hardly get any use from it at all!)

Small blenders are also so much easier to store in a sailboat galley, so the trade-off of a bit less power is more than worth it.

Electric Kettle

If you’re planning on spending any time in marinas, especially ones with free electricity, then a cheap kettle will pay for itself in no time.

We actually found ours in a bin (no joke) and we keep it handy for any time we’re hooked up to free shore power. We then always boil cooking water before turning on the gas, it’s amazing how much it actually saves us.

Stainless Steel Nesting Saucepans

I would kill for these , literally (watch out Adam!) I have thrown many tantrums about trying to store our pots and pans. We have a frying pan and two saucepans, and I cannot put them away without wanting to throw everything we own overboard.

And when I have to get them out of the cupboard, everything has to come out. It is my biggest galley equipment bugbear. These stainless steel nesting saucepans will be the first thing we invest in when we aren’t busy fixing holes in the boat!

Ceramic Knives

Until I met Adam I didn’t own a single sharp knife. I didn’t know what I was missing out on! When we moved into our sailboat galley the knives and cutlery were all a little rusty, and certainly not sharp!

We took the advice of fellow cruisers and bought some ceramic knives . They never rust, they sharpen easily and they wipe clean. You just have to be careful to keep them in their covers so they don’t break when at sea!

Portable Freezer

Ok, maybe this isn’t essential galley equipment but it is super luxurious to have a way to freeze things on a sailboat .

We initially bought a 12V portable freezer with the intention of using it to make ice when we were generating surplus power from our solar but we’ve discovered that actually, we have enough power to keep it running throughout the summer.

It’s only small so it doesn’t take up much space at all and it’s so lovely to have ice in the heat of summer and to be able to freeze batch-made meals for passages or even fish we’ve caught that would otherwise go to waste. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment if you live onboard!

Must Have Galley Equipment For Dining

Falcon wear dishes.

A prawn stew in a falcon wear dish on a sailboat

These are our go-to dishes for, well, everything. We bake in them, eat pasta from them and even wash up cutlery in them. They’re meant to be pie dishes, but I don’t think we’ve ever used them to cook a pie.

They are great little dishes for roasting veggies in, and they’re our go-to ‘plates’ for taking to the beach for picnics and BBQs. They’re super durable, and they do the job of a lot of different things so they save a lot of space too! They are perfect galley equipment for sailboat cooking.

Top tip: The pie dishes make excellent bowls for long passages!

Coconut Bowls

yacht galley equipment

We love these bowls for breakfast or evening meals like noodles. They make food look even more delicious somehow. They’re also easy to store and clean, so a win-win in a sailboat galley!

Get a set that includes wooden cutlery so you can try them out. We prefer normal cutlery but a wooden set would be so useful as you wouldn’t have to worry about rust.

Baking In The Sailboat Galley

It took me a while to get used to baking in our sailboat galley, but now that I’ve worked out what works and what doesn’t, I love it! Below are a few things that will make your life easier!

Silicone Baking Mats And Cupcake Holders

cupcakes on a sailboat, cooked in silicone cupcake holders

Easy to clean and easy to use, these things are a super useful bit of sailboat galley equipment. The baking mats are especially useful and we use ours for just about anything that goes into the oven.

The cupcake holders are definitely nice to have more than an essential, but you’ll be surprised by how much you’ll miss these little extras if you’re living aboard your sailboat.

All the things that were at the back of the cupboard at home suddenly seem like essential bits of galley kit when you’re lacking! These silicone ones take up hardly any space, so they’re a nice little extra for anyone that loves baking.

Galley Equipment For Sailboat Cooking – The Bread Loaf Tin

yacht galley equipment

When you start cruising full time you’ll realise that bread is actually much harder to get hold of than you once thought. We have rocked up to many small village shops and been disappointed by their lack of bread!

One way we get around this is to buy packaged wraps that store for much longer, but nothing beats a loaf of bread!

Even the sailor most afraid of baking has given in and tried to bake their own bread. It’s really not as hard as it sounds.

One thing that has saved my bread many times is a decent bread loaf tin. This simple bit of sailboat galley equipment will change your bread-making game! I also use it to make loaf cakes like banana bread and lemon poppy cake. Yum!

Galley Storage Equipment That Will Make Your Life Easier

Galley Storage Equipment That Will Make Your Life Easier

Storing things on a sailboat can be an absolute nightmare (check out our tips for sailboat storage for some handy ideas), and storing things in the galley is the worst bit! But there are some hacks we’ve found to make life a little easier when it comes to the sailboat galley.

Sailboat Galley Equipment Storage Containers

These airtight, stack-able storage containers are perfect for keeping food dry and organised in your boat galley. They are convenient sizes and I love the fact they’re see-through so it’s easy to see what you’re grabbing!

I use these for food that once open, can’t get wet or damp. Humid boats are not flour compatible! We have one for flour, one for sugar, and another for oats and cereals. The others are perfect for leftovers that we don’t want spilling all over the fridge.

They’re a great shape for making the most of the space in the galley, and they stack really easily too. They are probably the thing I use most in the galley, just because they’re so useful! Make sure you get yourself at least one set for cooking in your boat galley!

Sandwich Storage Bags

Do the environment a favour and get yourself a reusable sandwich bag for any day trips from the sailboat.

Adam and I often go for long treks where we want to take lunch with us, and these reusable sandwich bags are perfect for carrying snacks and not getting them all over your bag! We especially like the dolphin ones , but you can go for a plainer option if you’re boring! Haha!

Sailboat Galley Equipment Of The Liquid Variety!

coffee coming to the boil in a sailboat galley

Coffee Making For Tired Sailors!

I don’t actually drink coffee, but I have never met anyone who needs a cup of coffee in the morning as much as Adam does.

When we bought the boat it came with a proper Italian stovetop coffee maker and Adam has completely fallen for it, refusing to go back to instant coffee. It’s actually really easy to use and works perfectly on the gas ring, and the coffee it uses lasts for ages so we never run out!

A lot of people prefer the AeroPress , which is another great way of making proper coffee without big electrical machines, but we got fed up with needing the filter paper. If you aren’t organised enough to be carrying a stash at all times then don’t bother with it. But I will say, it’s super easy to clean and apparently makes very good coffee!

Avex Pint Glasses – The Perfect Galley Equipment For Sailboat Cooking

These Avex glasses are pure genius! They keep cold drinks cold (and actually keep them really cold for a long time!) and they keep hot drinks hot. They are perfect for a big cup of tea on a cold passage or a nice cold beer when you arrive at a beautiful anchorage. They’re perfect for sailboat living.

Outside Sailboat Galley Equipment

meat on a bbq on a sailboat

Depending on where you’re planning on sailing (and when) it’s probably worth considering the fact that you’ll want to be able to cook outside.

Last season during the height of summer we found it almost unbearable to be cooking in the galley due to the heat. We would argue about whose turn it was to cook and make the quickest recipes we could think of so we didn’t have to be near the oven. It was a bit of a nightmare, to be honest.

We splashed out at Christmas and decided to buy ourselves a Cobb BBQ . It can be moved around while you’re cooking and used on any surface, as the outside of it just doesn’t get hot. It has a ‘moat’ where you can cook your veg and a lid that makes it more of an oven, and it barely takes any fuel to get hot.

You can start cooking on it after just minutes. The other really great thing about it is that you can take it to the beach, or where ever, as it’s so easy to transport in its little carry case. It comes in several different versions, including a compact version for smaller sailboats and gas or coal alternatives.

Fish on a BBQ making it the perfect sailboat galley cooking equipment in the summer

As you can see, a few simple bits of sailboat galley equipment can go a long way on board. Hopefully, this has given you a few ideas of some of the things that will really come in handy.

Let me know in the comments below what your favourite bit of sailboat galley equipment is and if there’s anything I’ve missed….I’m always looking for ways to improve my sailboat galley!

Catamaran Vs. Monohull: Which Is Better?

Awesome post, guys! I can’t imagine how much of the basics people would miss out on if they didn’t have resources like this to get them set up. Invaluable information, for sure.

Have you run into any issues with pests in the galley?

I know that the best way to keep cockroaches at bay is to remove all paper and cardboard from items before bringing them onboard – things like boxes and labels that dry goods and cans come packaged in. Instead of keeping cereal or other dry goods packaged as is, you can use air-tight plastic storage containers, or you can store things you won’t use right away in the freezer.

You can also use plastic storage for things like flour, rice, nuts, etc so that you don’t run into a weevil problem. If you do find weevils in your flour, you can stop the infestation by microwaving the flour for 5+ minutes, or by baking it in the oven at 200F for 30+ minutes. For other dry goods overtaken by weevils, you can put them in a deep-freezer for several hours – which should take care of things as long as it’s cold enough.

Thanks for the great post, and keep up the informative content!

Hey, thanks for the feedback and great tips! These will be very useful if we ever have these problems in the galley.

Galley Equipment Buying Guide

What should you consider when setting up or purchasing equipment for your boat's galley?

Living on board a boat full-time can come with a different array of challenges. The tight quarters and lack of storage can present many challenges not found in other homes. What do you need in your galley equipment buying guide?

When purchasing equipment to use in the galley there are a lot of factors to consider. The size and space available will be big influences on your equipment purchases. Other factors you will need to consider are the power consumption, quality, and affordability of the items. You will need to balance these requirements to best equip your ship’s galley.

Below we will look at what you consider when outfitting your ship's galley and some products that you can't afford to skip.

There are many factors you should consider before making an equipment purchase for your galley. Below we will take a closer look at some factors to ask yourself when outfitting or expanding your ship's galley.

The first thing you will need to ask is what do you need. There are very limited storage spaces aboard sailboats. You will run out of room in your galley and elsewhere on the ship if you purchase items that are not necessary for the basic needs of cooking and storage aboard your vessel.

Will it Fit in the Space?

You don't have to worry about cabinet size in an apartment or house, but the cabinets on a ship can be quite smaller. The counters are shallow, the sink is smaller, and the cabinets aren’t as deep. The large plates you picked out may be bigger than the storage space for them.

Knowing the depth and size of your cabinets will be a must when purchasing new dishes or any other equipment for the galley of your ship.

Anything brought about will need to be properly stowed when the boat moves. You will need to consider if the equipment you buy will be able to be secured properly when the boat is rocking or underway. Items that are noisy will need to be addressed to ensure they can be stowed to avoid damage and be able to be used when they are needed.

Will it Perform?

Things that don't work can be a nuisance when you are able to go out and get a replacement, however, can be a disaster when you are miles and miles from the shore. Working when it should will include all aspects of its design and construction. If it is necessary and does break, what are the replacement options?

Durability Matters

The marine environment can be tough on tools and equipment. The salty water and harsh environment can cause things to rust and become damaged. It will be worth it, in the long run, to spend more on quality equipment that will hold up to the harsh marine environment over time.

Construction

The construction will go hand and hand with the durability of the items. Quality stainless steel will be preferred in galley equipment. It is rust-resistant and will not break. Measuring cups made in stainless steel will not lose their markings over time like their plastic counterparts. Heavier steel pans will also resist warping and be able to conduct heat evenly.

Plastic is good for larger mixing bowls and serving dishes. Glass should be avoided. It is easily breakable. Drinkware made of plastics are a sensible alternative to glass. They can be more likely to scratch but will be less likely to break.

Unbreakable dishes such as Corelle are popular options. They have the look and feel of real dishes but are much more durable. Melamine dishes are another option. They have brighter colors and patterns and appeal to those wanting something different in their galley.

Power, Water, and Storage Consumption

There is limited power, water, and storage on a sailboat. Each new item will consume some of the resources available. Picking items that will fit in the best is necessary. Hand-powered and manual options that will not use a lot of space will be the best options to fit into life aboard a ship.

Budget Restrictions

Lastly, and most importantly, is to purchase within the means of your budget. Spending more on quality will be necessary for products that are used often will be more affordable in the long run. Spending your money wisely on quality products will be the most affordable in the long term.

Must-Have Items

Below we will look at a few must-have items for life aboard your vessel.

Slow Cookers

Having a slow cooker is a good addition to your sailboat galley. They can be an easy alternative to cooking. A little prep work and adding the contents to the slow cooker will help save you time and energy in producing a warm meal.

A blender can help you mix, blend, and chop items together. Blenders can help prepare soup, smoothies, or even mixed drinks making them a necessity in almost any galley. Small blenders are easy to store and can even be set up to run off solar power saving from using the electricity aboard your vessel.

An electric kettle will be worth its weight in gold when trying to heat or boil water, especially while in a port. Even finding a small electric kettle to heat water when cooking will save you from using some of the resources on your boat from powering larger appliances.

A Good set of Knives

Having a good set of knives is a must when preparing food in any kitchen. The galley aboard your vessel is no different. This seems to be an often overlooked area. A good set of stainless steel knives should be one of the first things you purchase for your galley.

Ceramic knives are another good option. They will not rust in the harsh marine environment and are easy to clean. Their only downside is they are prone to breaking if used for anything other than cutting and slicing. They are also not recommended to be used on frozen food.

If you do go with the ceramic option, be sure to keep them stowed in their protective covers to avoid damaging them while underway.

These may seem more like a luxury item aboard a ship but having a small portable freezer will help you keep and store food that might normally go to waste. They can consume a lot of electricity, so they may not be a good addition if you have concerns about that department.

If you do have the room and power adding a small freezer will increase the food supply you are able to have onboard and allow you to keep and store fish that might go to waste without one. It will also allow you to meal prep and freeze all your meals saving you significant cooking time.

If you haven't considered a freezer for your boat you may want to consider adding one in the future.

Water Filtering

Having a ready supply of fresh drinking water is necessary while on board your sailboat. Depending on how you are getting and storing fresh water on board your vessel, a water pitcher and filter may be necessary to have cold drinking water on a daily basis. Buying and storing bottled water is almost unfeasible for long-term life onboard.

Saving and storing rainwater will need to be treated before it can be drunk. Rainwater is considered safe by some but drinking untreated rainwater can lead to a variety of illnesses,

A safer alternative to drinking rainwater is a Rainman or portable water maker. This portable water system is able to draw seawater and fill your storage tanks with fresh clean water. Since it is not connected directly to your ship it will give you the maximum flexibility needed to obtain the necessary clean water for drinking and cooking.

Galley storage

With limited storage space on your sailboat, storage items that maximize space is necessary.   Keeping a clean and well-organized galley will aid in preparing and cooking meals. Airtight stackable containers are necessary to save space and keep your dry foods from getting wet and unusable. See-through containers can help you find anything you are looking for quickly and easily when prepping and cooking your meals.

Having a set of containers for leftovers that will not leak as the sailboat moves underway will keep your fridge clean and organized as well.

Reusable Storage bags

Reusable cloth food storage bags are another great idea for food storage in your ship's galley or when packing food when leaving on short trips from your vessel. They will save waste, and the time and cost to replace their disposable counterparts. They also come in many different styles and colors.

If you are missing high-quality reusable food storage bags in your ship's galley, they should be next on your must-have list.

Coffee Maker

If you are anything like me you just do not function without coffee. Luckily there are plenty of small coffee makers available to ensure we are able to stay caffeinated. If you have never tried one before, a stove-top espresso maker could be a life-changer. They are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to use, everything you need in marine life.

If espresso is not your thing, an Aeropress coffee maker may be a better fit in your galley. Aeropress coffee makers can make espresso, American coffee, latte, or cold brew from the same easy-to-use portable machine. With an Aeropress, you will be able to brew the coffee to your strength and taste.

Baking on Your Sailboat

Baking may not be a necessity for every ship’s galley, but it can be easily accomplished. Baking onboard your ship will help improve your morale and diet. Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked bread or cake. Below are a few items to have your ships galley producing baked goods in no time.

Cupcake Holders and Baking Mats

Silicone cupcake molds are extremely lightweight, flexible, and durable. They can be used for cupcakes, muffins, brownies, or even baking your favorite cookies. When they are not in use baking, they make great ice cube trays for your portable freezer on a hot summer day.

Silicone baking mats are a great alternative to their metal counterparts. They are nonstick and reusable making for easy cleanup. They are also lightweight and easily stored in your galley. A thicker high-quality silicone mat will last quite a bit of time without fading or discoloration if it is properly taken care of.

After you are sailing for a length of time, you may find the availability of bread can be lacking. Having the necessary silicone bread pans can have your galley producing loaf after loaf of fresh bread in no time. You can also use them for meatloaf, pound cake, and many other recipes.

A silicone bread pan with a steel frame will make baking onboard your ship easier and safer. The metal frame will resist collapsing and provide handles when putting your bread into and removing it from the oven. The silicone will be easier to clean and store on board than its metal counterparts.

If you are missing baking and preparing sweets while onboard your sailboat these molds, bread tins, and baking mats can help you bring that little piece of home back onboard.

There are many factors to consider when finding the necessary equipment to outfit the galley of your vessel. The storage available aboard a ship is much smaller than the traditional spaces available in a home or apartment. This will lead you to make choices that will maximize the space and only pick the necessary equipment when outfitting the galley of your boat.

The needs and wants of each person living and traveling on a sailboat are going to be different. Hopefully, this galley equipment buying guide will help you make the best choices to maximize the space you have available and fill all of the needs you have making your life on board happy and stress-free.

DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION IS THE CULTURE OF ÜNOKS

Among our strategic goals, contributing to our sector is one of the main aims of Ünoks.

The master chef of the kitchens of ÜNOKS attaches importance to food hygiene in it’s projects. "Cooler group products" produced by ÜNOKS, which ensure the storage of food products in suitable conditions, facilitate the long-term storage of foods with the right choice and customer-oriented project design.

The "preparation equipment" we produce in accordance with hygiene standards enable preparation for cooking processes without reducing the nutritional value of foods.

Different cultures require different kitchen culture and cooking conditions. The most suitable "cooking group equipment" for each culture is one of the effective results of ÜNOKS expertise with the right choice, customer-oriented project design philosophy.

It is a fact that food are damaged more during transportation between processes than during the cooking process. ÜNOKS "service units" add hygiene safety to transportation safety, whether in the cooking process or in the service phase.

A cup of coffee or a cold drink to be enjoyed during and after a meal is more delicious and healthier when prepared by ÜNOKS "beverage preparation equipment".

The adventure of every meal eaten with pleasure ends in the kitchen and "dishwashing equipment". Every dishwashing equipment that facilitates the work of the kitchen staff and ensures that they work under hygienic conditions is a part of the ÜNOKS philosophy design process which ensures that the ships return back in good health.

To eat with pleasure, it is necessary to start the design of the kitchen with UNOKS.

What are the terms of guarantee for the products/equipment?

Guarantee period is determined according to the demand of the customer during the contract phase. Guarantee period covers 18 months following the delivery of the equipment, if it is stated as 12/18 months for delivery. If guarantee is demanded following the delivery of a vessel to the customer then the guarantee period is 12 months. There is no guarantee for the household appliances as they are not appropriate to be used on vessels. Consumables and electronic devices are not covered by the guarantee.

What do I need in my ship galley?

According to priority order; cooking, preparation, washing and storage equipment should be found in the ship's galley. These products and equipment should be selected by considering the customer's demand and needs and should be suitable for ship use. Devices should be selected as ship type devices and stainless steel equipment should be selected as ship type equipment. Yacht galleys have the same configuration as the ship galleys. High segment products are used because the outlook is at the forefront. Naval vessel galleys are also have the same configuration as the ship galleys. The area of mariners’ daily stored food which will be kept should be determined and cabinets with a master lock mechanism should be considered for the storage of damaging materials and products such as knives.

Do your products/equipment have certificates?

The produced stainless products have stainless steel certificates. We use 18/8 304 CrNi stainless steel sheets in our production. All products are accepted with certificates. If the certificate of a product is required, it is given to the customer; e.g. Marpol 5 certificate in garbage disposals.

Can you provide information about your installation service?

All the products/equipment supplied by us are installed by Ünoks personnel. The water, contaminated water and electrical connections required for the devices are provided by our customers' subcontractors.

The crew of this vessel consisted of a captain, 2 sailing masters, 4 officers, a boatswain with an assistant, a priest, 62 sailors and steerers, 268 rowers, 254 soldiers, and bombardiers – about 600 people in total. For the first time, the Venetians used Galleas in 1571 in the naval battle of Lepanto against the Turkish Fleet. At the end of the sixteenth century Galleas had a length of up to 80 m, a width of up to 16 m, 3 masts with 3 gaff-sails, on each side 1 row of oars (up to 10 rowers), in the stern 2 large steering oars, 2 decks (the lower one for rowers, and the upper one for soldiers and guns)....
