What’s special about a maxi catamaran?
The best thing about maxi catamarans is that they sail faster than the other vessels. They do not require any kind of heavy keeling and are lighter than the other monohulls. Since they keep their sails perpendicular to the wind, they tend to sail faster than the monohulls.
Are catamarans better than yachts?
You get a bit more adrenaline on a yacht, but the best thing about sailing on a catamaran is that catamarans have two hulls that are better balanced. Thus, catamarans are more stable to sail on than the yachts.
Are catamarans perfect for long-distance sailing?
Catamarans are fast outstripping the single-hull vessels and boats used for long-distance sailing and journeys. Catamarans are more comfortable and stable, and some even have the potential to travel more than 200 miles in one day.
Is it possible to sleep in a catamaran?
Catamarans have fixed beds within the hulls, which is especially true for the larger catamarans. And the fixed beds are quite comfortable, and you can always expect a great sleep at night on a catamaran.

Maxi catamaran VPLP 110 launched at JFA
Not easy to be surprised these days, with so many yachts being the subject of press releases at the moment. But it's not the case this time, with the first picture of the latest yacht built by JFA, a maxi catamaran currently known under the project name VPLP 110.
Spotted a few days ago when she came back from sea trials, here is a preview of the new catamaran built by JFA in Concarneau, France. Her project name gives us more details about her pedigree. She's designed by Van Peteghem & Lauriot Prévost (VPLP), and her length is 33.5m (110) with a beam of 14.05m. These dimensions make her the largest catamaran built in carbon epoxy.
Few details are known for the moment about the interior. Designed by Cittolin Polli, it accommodates eight guests and a crew of six.
Her air draft being 45.5m, this catamaran will have a sailing area of 765msq, and in case of light winds she'll be powered by twin 355hp Cummins engines.
Note that all these details come from the new website of JFA, with the yard refusing any comments for the moment because of a confidentiality agreement. We hope to give you more details in the near future.
The VPLP 110 catamaran will be delivered this autumn.

the weekend away netflix movie review
The Weekend Away
A woman’s body floats face down in dark waters as somber cello music swells. One quick title and dissolve later and the water, sans body, is now bright and inviting. The camera pans over a picturesque coastal Croatian town. Everything is sunshine and palm trees as bright-eyed new mom Beth ( Leighton Meester ) makes her way by taxi to a girls weekend away with best friend Kate ( Christina Wolfe ).
In free fall after the dissolution of her marriage, the whole trip is on Kate’s, including the lushest AirBnB, raw oysters, and copious amounts of alcohol. They’ve been best friends since Beth’s semester abroad in England, during which Kate introduced Beth to her now husband Rob ( Luke Norris ). The women have drifted a bit since the birth of Beth’s daughter Aster. By the end of Beth and Kate’s weekend, one of them will be dead.
Written by Sarah Alderson from her own novel and directed by Kim Farrant , the new Netflix thriller “The Weekend Away” is cut from the same cloth as those great cheesy ’90s thrillers like “ Double Jeopardy ” where the plot has more twists than the serpentine roads Beth’s taxi takes to get to her AirBnB. But that’s okay. The pleasure of a thriller like this is to get lost in its locales and caught up in the web it spins.
Farrant and cinematographer Noah Greenberg capture the alluring sunny beauty of Split, Croatia with fluid camera movements. Pink sunsets contrast against ancient stone buildings. The filmmakers frame the actors like classic postcards or vacation photos, the cityscape always in the distance behind them. Even during the film’s darker twists, the tourist vibes remain as if the whole movie were told through a slide show recapping the most disastrous getaway ever.
Opposites in both temperament and style, introverted Beth has frazzled hair and no makeup, opting for sage green crochet dress for their big night out; extroverted Kate, on the other hand, dons bright red lips and teal sequins. Meester is excellent at mixing in new mom exhaustion with the excitement she clearly feels being reunited with Kate. Meanwhile Wolfe buzzes through her brief appearance, high on god knows what and ready to paint the town red.
Their “one night of excitement” to get Beth out of her rut starts at a smoky neon lit bar where they meet a couple of handsome men, and ends with Kate missing. Unfortunately, the opening shot deflates much of the tension here as we know Kate’s fate long before Beth does. What makes this part of the film work however is the chemistry between Beth and Zain (a soulful Ziad Bakri ), a cab driver and Syrian refugee who helps her retrace the night. Does this all make logical sense? No, not really. But Bakri imbues his character with such a rich interiority and personal code of ethics that you almost buy what the movie is selling.
Films like this live and die on the commitment of their lead performance and whether the audience roots for her to get out of this mess. Meester has always had an incredibly likable screen presence and the movie wisely sticks to her point of view throughout, anchoring the audience’s investment in her. In the more emotional sequences, Farrant does not shy away from a classic close-up, allowing Meester to showcase her expressive eyes.
Beyond the enjoyable shock factor of the twists—I yelled out “What?!” more than once—the film explores the idea of trust. Beth trusts Kate, even when she gets her to do things outside her comfort zone. That’s the basis of their friendship. Beth trusts Zain. “The heart is your guide,” he tells her in Arabic when the police try to make her doubt this trust. Beth trusts her own instincts, even when the police, Kate’s estranged husband Jay ( Parth Thakerar ), and even her own husband Rob try to get her to doubt what she knows to be true about her best friend. Although some of the weight of what the film wants to say about gaslighting is undone by the ridiculous plotting, Meester and Bakri’s grounded performances keep the story rooted.
“The Weekend Away” is the best kind of purposely preposterous potboiler. The scenery is gorgeous, the twists keep the adrenaline pumping, and the performances are memorable. Even though you might not remember everything that happens, you’ll have a good time while it lasts.
On Netflix today.

The Weekend Away Reviews
It's plot will keep you invested even if you do guess most of the twists along the way. Just don't expect too much from the script, however well the actors manage to elevate it.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 25, 2023
Not a bad little number, this, well-directed to the genre template by Kim Farrant and with an excellent supporting performance by Luke Norris as Beth's husband Rob. His scene on the phone is a mini-masterclass in emotionally authentic acting.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 30, 2022
Based on a Sarah Alderson novel, this trashy little Netflix whodunnit starring Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester as the innocent American in the wrong place at the wrong time is, well, a film that’s almost deliberately unoriginal.

Though Meester puts on a solid performance atop an intriguing plot, The Weekend Away doesn't supply enough thrills to make it an entertaining watch.

It has too many twists to it, but it's not a bad throwaway thriller.

This is the kind of movie actresses make when they wish to prove theyre more than just a pretty face - or are desperate to be taken seriously. Meester wears no make-up, dresses frumpy, puts on a few pounds to play a post-partum mom, and goes method.

‘The Weekend Away’ Review: A Croatian Vacay Turns Hazardous
Leighton Meester finds danger abroad in this diverting if excessively twist-laden Netflix thriller.

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.
Director Kim Farrant ’s last two features (2015’s “Strangerland,” 2019’s “Angel of Mine”) both involved suspicions cast on unstable adults over missing children. Whereas in “Weekend’s” missing person scenario, our protagonist is pretty much the sole character who doesn’t end up looking guilty of something or other. London-based American Beth (Meester) arrives in Split for a long-planned getaway with old pal Kate (Christina Wolfe), who has arranged rather luxurious digs for them — gloating that the husband she’s just divorced will foot the bill. While Beth’s own marriage to Rob (Luke Norris) is apparently undergoing a “rough patch,” she is nonetheless dedicated to their baby and to domesticity, taking this break only at her free-spirited erstwhile college roomie’s insistence.

Though disinclined to party-hearty, she reluctantly acquiesces when Kate’s “one night of excitement … [to] bring you out of your rut” turns into clubbing with two random guys, then waking up the next morning with a brutal hangover and little memory of the prior evening. This is problematic, because Kate is now nowhere to be found. Despite her history of flaky, impulsive behavior, such absence is worrying enough that Beth soon alerts the local police (Amar Bukvic, Iva Mihalic). They are dismissive; considerably more helpful is a Syrian-refugee taxi driver (Ziad Bakri) Beth has already befriended. Their sleuthing around only raises worse fears that get realized when Kate’s corpse is found — unsurprisingly, since the film opened with a flash-forward shot of her body floating in the Adriatic.
Popular on Variety
Our heroine’s distress is exacerbated further once she realizes the authorities regard her as a suspect in her friend’s murder. There’s no lack of other potential perps, either, ranging from the club-pickup gigolos (Marko Braic, Lujo Kuncevic) to the rental flat’s creepy landlord (Adrian Pezdirc). Even those investigating cops and Kate’s own husband start looking pretty shady, as fragmentary memories of the fateful evening return to her, and intel withheld by various parties is revealed.
Ultimately there are a few twists too many, pushing the story into a realm of excess contrivance. There’s not enough time or nuance to lend numerous narrative turnabouts plausibility. And despite the decent performances, we can’t quite buy into Beth’s primary relationships here: As played by Meester, she’s such a vanilla “all-American girl,” it doesn’t make sense she’d be besties with wild-child Kate, let alone have a long-term spouse concealing dark secrets. Presumably these dynamics played better in scenarist Sarah Alderson’s original novel (which is set in Lisbon rather than Split). But in the film’s brisk screen progress, the pileup of left-field plot developments soon becomes overkill.
To Farrant’s credit, that surplus melodrama somehow stops short of camp. The film is just nimble and poker-faced enough to skirt unintentional humor, even after we stop finding it remotely convincing. On the other hand, the director doesn’t demonstrate much feel for overall tension or physical action. Deprived the more complicated psychological dimensions of her prior thrillers to lean on, “Away” requires a more mysterious, threatening mood than she seems interested in summoning. Historic seaside Split looks like a scrubbed, sunny tourist’s delight here—not a place where one might fall into a pit of intrigue and possibly never get out alive.
For all its increasingly-expansive credibility gaps and other flaws, however, the movie does provide a slick, pacey diversion. Rather like the kind of airport-bookstore potboiler it’s duly based on, “The Weekend Away” holds attention sufficient to pass the time. There are no aspirations evident toward anything memorable, despite the vaguely Hitchcockian tenor. Taken as the audiovisual equivalent of a beach read, it’s fun — certainly a notch or two above the level of such other recent Netflix woman-in-peril pulp fictions as “The Intrusion” or “Brazen.”

Slingshot Review: Casey Affleck & Laurence Fishburne Lead a Small-Scale Sci-Fi Mindbender
Mark wahlberg says his most controversial film wouldn’t be made today; we disagree, laurence fishburne's two favorite movie roles are not what you'd expect.
The vacation movie has dramatized the iconic notion of a girls’ trip, the opportunity to get away from a drab, mundane life and explore some new location. Often it is a tropical place, or at least somewhere a lot warmer than New York City in the winter. From movies like Girls Trip to Spring Breakers , romantic comedy and crime territory has been covered by the overarching theme. But what happens when someone goes missing on a trip? This question is the answer that Australian director Kim Farrant sought to find in the Netflix original thriller The Weekend Away .
The Weekend Away is based on the thriller novel by Sarah Alderson of the same name. The novel was inspired by an innocent trip Alderson took to Lisbon, Portugal, with a best friend. Although that trip did not have any deadly consequences, The Weekend Away does. It meditated on concepts of female friendships , especially in one’s twenties and thirties, and how many people do not know what they are doing at that age.
Leighton Meester , best known for her performances on The CW’s Gossip Girl and ABC’s Single Parents , returns to the big screen after three years. She stars as Beth, the movie’s protagonist. Beth’s best friend, Kate, is portrayed by actress Christina Wolfe, who previously appeared in Batwoman . The remainder of the small cast consists of actors Luke Norris, Ziad Bakri, and Amar Bukvic. The movie, however, begins and ends with Beth and Kate.
The two consider themselves best friends , and they met when Beth studied abroad in England for a semester. They both now live in England, although Beth is an American. Kate had introduced Beth to Rob (Luke Norris), with whom she has a daughter and is now married to him. That marriage does not seem to be thriving, though, judging from the detached way they communicate with each other. Kate and Beth have been slowly drifting away in the time that Beth had her daughter, but when Kate’s marriage comes apart at the seams, the two decide to get away together and travel to Croatia. They expect this to be a trip of indulgence, something where Kate can help feel better about life and rediscover her purpose.
A Best Friend Disappears
What ends up happening is the exact opposite: Kate is found dead in the water. The film hides nothing, showing Kate’s body floating in the water as the opening shot. Almost immediately, it is established that something is going to be wrong on this getaway, and the viewer, along with the characters in the movie, is going to have to put together the pieces of what actually happened here. It also sets the expectation that darkness lingers underneath a bright and sunny town shown in the next shot.
And perhaps revealing this fact so soon can be a double-edged sword for the movie. It quickly establishes what is to come and what the film is going to be about, but at the same time, it vastly lowers the stakes. Kate disappears during a night out in the town, leaving Beth in a panic when she realizes that Kate never returned to their luxurious hotel room that night. But because the viewer already knows what most likely has happened, the tension that could have been teased out of this event is nonexistent.

Kate is everything that Beth is not; she is bold and outgoing, someone willing to drag Beth away for a new adventure. As Kate slyly suggests swimming naked after Beth says she may have forgotten her swimsuit, Beth looks unamused, shyly looking to the side. In the time Kate is alive, her vibrancy fills up the screen. While Beth wears a toned-down shade of light blue for their night out, Kate goes all out and wears sparkly number fit for the club alongside bright red lipstick and high heels. She even says to Beth that Beth needs to get out of her rut and explore her sexuality. And perhaps this is understandable; her marriage has just ended, and she desires to live her life freely.
But here is how the story goes: Beth does not drink that night, nor does she recall doing anything out of the sort. However, she blacks out and wakes up the next morning throwing up. Kate is noticeably absent from the screen. This is pretty relatable, something expected on a normal vacation and girls’ trip. You are going to have more drinks than necessary when trying to escape regular life, and one gets drunk to the point of blacking out, and the other, who keeps insisting on having sex, is not home when the other girl wakes up.
Who Did It?
As Beth’s anxiety about Kate not coming home increases, one surprising standout character is Zain (Ziad Bakri), a Syrian taxi driver first seen dropping Beth off at her hotel. At times, he seems to be the only taxi driver in town due to the frequency he appears and is called upon, but he shows Beth compassion in her initial search for Kate and helps look for her. He is reluctant, however, to have his name included in a police report due to the potential of his visa getting revoked. Croatia has a history of accepting refugees from countries in political strife.
There is quite a bit of gaslighting going on at this moment, as Beth’s husband and even the male police officer wave off her concerns. “[Kate] has gone off with a guy and her friend is upset,” the male police officer laughs to a companion in Croatian as Beth sits anxiously in front of them. The report is never filed, and when she returns the next day, a female police officer chides the man for not doing his job properly.
This is a distinct double standard that overtly clouds the beginning of this movie; because Kate is seen as promiscuous and a party girl, men see her as unworthy of being looked for. The problem is instead waved off and pushed back because there is an assumption she will just wander home drunk. Maybe if the roles were reversed and Beth was missing, an alarm would have sounded. The tragedy to occur is distinctly clouded in a veil of blatant sexism.
The Weekend Away does not try to reinvent the plot point where someone mysteriously goes missing, and those who knew them are scrambling to find answers. Its location is not the typical tropical backdrop one would expect an average girls’ trip to go and celebrate their newfound freedom. Instead, the protagonists venture to scenic Croatia in a coastal town, which provides the perfect moody and quiet atmosphere with its old-world European-style charm and mountains looming in the distance.

And perhaps it is The Weekend Away ’s strict adherence to the genre that marks its downfall. The movie fails to break free from the conventional tropes and dynamics created in films where someone goes missing, and it drags on the concept of whodunit for as long as it possibly can. Ridden and layered with twists, each character becomes a suspect in this case. Whether it escorts that Kate may or may not have hired the night of her disappearance, or the unsettling landlord found rifling through their possessions, suspicion is at every corner.
A Thriller Movie Reminiscent of the 90s
Leighton Meester as Beth provides a nuanced performance full of close-ups as she dutifully navigates what could have happened that night. Even as the surrounding people insist that she does not know the truth, that Kate will show up okay, she insists that she knows something has gone wrong. The viewers know that her hunch is right, of course, thus demonstrating the nature of their bond and relationship.
Beth, however, is quite a shaky character. As her distrust and paranoia only continue to grow, she lacks any sort of story outside her friend’s disappearance. She lacks a particular growth in her narrative arc that is truly satisfying. While she does eventually uncover the truth behind what has happened, she is still the same Beth introduced at the beginning of the film, except now she is more jaded and hardened by the world. Perhaps that is why she finds solace in Zain, who has left behind a life in Syria due to war and experienced death like Beth.
The Weekend Away has a runtime of ninety minutes, but within that brief period, a lot is packed in there. Underlying social commentary scrapes the surface of experiences of new mothers and immigrants like Zain, but these are smothered under the main plot, and it is how it continues to twist. At times the movie itself can be quite predictable, and the stakes are too low, but it keeps the story fresh by introducing a new twist every five or ten minutes. Reminiscent of nineties films, it provides a solid Friday night movie but fails to deliver something new and exciting in the genre.

Sure, We Loved ‘Gone Girl,’ But Netflix’s ‘The Weekend Away’ Feels Like Another Stale Copy
*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
Did you like The Girl on the Train ? Love Gone Girl ? We sure did. As did almost anyone who read those hugely successful novels or watched the star-studded film adaptations that followed. For years, we've seen new books and movies try to replicate the success of those massive thrillers. But, unfortunately, as time passed and the structure of these mysteries was repeated time and time again, the recipe that once felt fresh now feels completely stale.
Thus, we have The Weekend Away , the newest release from Netflix that follows on the heels of The Girl on the Train , A Simple Favor , The Woman in the Window and so many more. If you thought movies of this ilk had been squeezed for everything they had, well—you'd be right. However, it seems the creators of The Weekend Away decided to pinch a few more drops from the mashed-up peel.
Netflix's choice to release this movie is even more intriguing, given that only a couple months back, the streaming juggernaut dropped a Kristen Bell-led TV series jokingly titled The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window , which spoofed movies of this fabric . (Even as a joke though, critics were simply tired of it .)
Now, Netflix has recruited Gossip Girl 's Leighton Meester for another murder mystery with familiar ingredients: a spotty night thanks to drinking, a woman gone missing and the protagonist wrongly accused, shady acquaintances and even shadier husbands. As all this goes down, the actress formerly known as Blair Waldorf puts on a heck of a performance, but she can't save this film from being predictable and underwhelming. Keep reading for our full review.
The Weekend Away sees Meester as Beth, a London-based new mother who is dealing with complacency in her marriage, self-consciousness about her appearance and a hesitancy to party too hard or spend money like she did when she was younger. Beth's problems are all too relatable, and when she embarks on a weekend getaway to Croatia with her best friend, Kate (Christina Wolfe), the film perfectly sets these characters up for trouble by placing them in a country that is unfamiliar to them, where the native language is one they don't speak.
However, while the Mediterranean backdrop is a breath of fresh air compared to the suburban claustrophobia of similar movies of this genre, that is where the differences stop.
From this point on, The Weekend Away plays out how you'd expect. When Kate goes missing, Beth immediately begins to investigate, thanks to a drunken night she doesn't remember and an encounter with two suspicious men they met at a bar. And when Beth turns to the Croatian police, she is met by a male officer who dismisses her concern.
One of the most frustrating aspects of The Weekend Away is how it only touches on issues that need to be explored more deeply. When Beth is convinced that she was drugged by the men at the bar, the police doubt her story (even though it turns out to be true). When the male police officer ignores protocol and bribes Beth's landlord to collect information, his actions are never questioned until the very end (even though he has a criminal record himself). And racism is at play when a Syrian refugee named Zain (Ziad Bakri) is immediately marked as dangerous and linked to a human trafficking group, even though he is the only one who is willing to help Beth and hear her story (and he is proven to be innocent all along).
These issues are brushed by and they're merely used as crutches to advance a story we've seen a thousand times, even though they could provide a much more nuanced plot.
As previously stated, Meester shines in this role, and she perfectly sells the part of a stressed, confused young mother, even for those who only know her for playing a spoiled, manipulative teenager. The rest of the cast supports her well, with solid performances from Wolfe (even though she has very limited screen time), Bakri and her husband Rob, played by Poldark 's Luke Norris.
But in addition to repeating oft-told tropes, The Weekend Away really does feel like a weekend vacation in that it goes by more quickly than you want it to. Each surprising twist seems to fall at the drop of a hat and there's little room for suspense. If the movie was perhaps a bit longer or the pacing was handled differently, there might've been room to explore the challenging topics more deeply and leave the viewer more on-edge. It makes sense this movie is based on a book (its author, Sarah Alderson, also wrote the screenplay) because the book probably offers more space for character development and tension.
Instead, all the (to be honest, quite expected) twists aren't given time to be shocking. We are shown little of Beth and Kate's friendship and Beth and Rob's marriage, so it feels hard to care or understand the history behind these relationships. However, Alderson does manage to fit in a double twist, which sadly, still feels predictable after the recent release of thrillers like Behind Her Eyes and The Invisible Man , both of which closed with two successive twists.
Purewow Review: 2.5 Stars
Disappointingly, The Weekend Away is a very middle-of-the-road thriller that doesn't use its arresting lead to its advantage. Instead of acting as a cinematic getaway, the movie feels like a winding rehash of every psychological thriller of the past ten years. Yes, we did love Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train . But after years of copycats, we'd love something new even more.

The Weekend Away review – a thriller with no thrills
With bad acting, poor writing, and drab execution, all goes wrong with The Weekend Away .
This review of the Netflix film The Weekend Away does not contain spoilers.
A good thriller always knows how to play with the audience’s anticipations. Leighton Meester-starring new Netflix film The Weekend Away misses that drastically. As a result, it becomes a prime example of flat storytelling with nothing to offer emotionally or artistically.
Based on the book by Sarah Alderson (who also wrote the screenplay for the film) and directed by Kim Farrant, the plot is not a unique one, especially for the thriller genre. A middle-aged married girl, Beth (Leighton Meester), comes to Croatia to spend a weekend with her college days best friend, Kate (Christina Wolfe). Though the two are total opposites in their characteristics, they share a strong bond. Kate is an extrovert who leads a wild, careless and risky lifestyle. At the same time, Beth is a mother of a child, calculated, and has a sense of responsibility towards her life. The two have a great time with each other after meeting in the film’s first act. But things get an unexpected turn.
This director establishes this classic thriller outline quite well in the first act. Despite showing affection, there is a concealed coldness and distance between the two characters. That leads to tension and anticipation for a more excellent mystery to brew in the opening scenes. But as the story progresses, this tension dies out, replacing it with flatness in the narrative. The twists and turns are too pretentious and unfulfilling that you don’t even care for them from a certain point in time. Also, the logical loopholes the movie harbors are inconceivable. For example, the police convict a person based on street CCTV footage in a scene. It is said that the person’s face is identified from that footage. But in a later scene, we understand that the person in the footage is someone else. It feels pretty dumb for me to digest why the police come to a clear-cut conclusion by seeing the footage at first if there is a doubt. Like these, there are other scenes in the movie which feel dumb in the same way.
The most unfortunate aspect of all in the movie is the actors’ performances. A good actor’s acting stands upon his ability to listen and react to the situation. Leighton Meester hurriedly throws her dialogue at the screen. She is not responding to the situations surrounding her. Thus there is no connection to her character. Christina Wolfe has a limited screen time but overcomes the symptoms of Leighton. But her character has no depth and also fails to make a mark.
I see the promise in Palestinian actor Ziad Bakri. He plays the role of Zain, a taxi driver, who helps Beth unravel the mystery of Kate’s disappearance. Ziad successfully portrays the various shades of the character, from a war-torn heartbroken man to a rugged protector of Kate in her helpless situation. I think Ziad is the only sustaining element in the entire film.
Every week, we encounter a thriller show or film on the streaming platforms. So, nowadays, the content has to provide something unique to get the audience’s attention. The Weekend Away does not only miss the uniqueness, but its cliches are also drably executed. As a result, it becomes a film that fails to connect people and becomes a thriller with no thrills.

The weekend away review: meester's film is gone girl minus suspense & thrills.
One Of The Best Western Remakes Of All Time Comes To Netflix In September
“no other gangster film ever did”: the godfather has 1 surprising secret to success, coppola says, a 62-minute horror movie with $800 budget is going viral & it might be one of the best of 2024.
With Netflix's The Weekend Away , Leighton Meester finds herself in a situation familiar to many cinematic heroes. A psychological thriller in the vein of Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, The Weekend Away holds all the elements of a classic missing-persons mystery. Unfortunately, the film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson (also the writer of the script here), lacks the same thrills and suspense that have pushed so many others in this genre to great heights. Director Kim Farrant finds moments of cleverness, but also takes too much time to up the stakes. Though Meester puts on a solid performance atop an intriguing plot, The Weekend Away doesn't supply enough thrills to make it an entertaining watch.
New mother Beth (Meester) has been pulled away from her daughter and unhappy marriage in London to indulge in a fun-filled weekend in Croatia with her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe). Her first night there, Beth is hoping for a nice dinner and to turn in early, but Kate swiftly pulls her into a wild night out... which proves to be a fatal decision. Beth wakes the next morning to find Kate missing, and despite her best efforts, no one seems to believe that something awful happened. Armed with only a taxi driver named Zain (Ziad Bakri) as an ally, Beth sets out to uncover just what happened to her friend.

The Weekend Away doesn't waste much time in getting to Kate's disappearance; by the 15-minute mark, she's gone and Beth is worried. One would then expect Farrant to dive right into this confounding mystery, but The Weekend Away instead takes a slower approach. The pacing is uneven, with a more restrained start that later gives way to rapid-fire twists. Beth gradually pieces together some details of the night before — which she can't recall, much to her frustration — but the first steps forward in her investigation only come about because she has Zain to help her. For the first portion of The Weekend Away , Beth is more of a passive bystander. It's only later on in the action that she brings out some clever moves of her own, including one that's a sly callback to an early moment. Beth could be a compelling character, a woman desperate to find her friend in an inhospitable environment. Overall, though, Alderson's script doesn't give Meester much else to do besides cry and fret.
Of course, anyone who has seen Meester's previous work will know she has the range for a number of characters. The Weekend Away 's Beth is a far cry from the performance Meester is best known for — Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl — and yet the actress has no problem sinking into her meeker persona. Because of how quickly Kate's disappearance comes about, it's hard to get a proper reading on her friendship with Beth. However, thanks to Meester, that connection is felt through Beth's desperation to find Kate. Meester lets the audience feel Beth's pain, particularly when a twist nearly midway through takes The Weekend Away in a new direction. The rest of the cast is solid, with Bakri perhaps making the biggest impression as the surprisingly helpful Zain.
With a movie like The Weekend Away , bringing something new to the format is incredibly difficult. There have already been countless other movies with the same sort of premise, so all it really takes is a compelling mystery, a good amount of suspense, and a devastating twist to win over audiences. Unfortunately, The Weekend Away doesn't have nearly enough of the second part, thus hindering everything else. The most suspenseful sequence finds Beth uncovering something about her creepy landlord (Adrian Pezdiric), but the rest of the mystery lacks that same propulsion. This connects back to the shaky pacing, which results in the biggest twist coming with just 15 minutes left in the film. To be fair, said ending is pretty intriguing and fills in gaps viewers might not have realized were there.
Still, The Weekend Away 's solid ending isn't quite enough to make up for the underwhelming journey. There are far more compelling psychological thrillers out there these days, and this one comes across as a merely average effort. Meester is a reason to watch, so fans of her work might find something here. All told, though, The Weekend Away is a missing-persons adventure that isn't as gripping as it could've been.

The Weekend Away is now streaming on Netflix. It is 91 minutes long and rated TV-14 for language, violence, and suggestive dialogue.
A weekend getaway to Croatia goes awry when a woman (Leighton Meester) is accused of killing her best friend (Christina Wolfe) and her efforts to get to the truth uncover a painful secret.
The former “Gossip Girl” actress finally gets her Netflix star vehicle. If only it were more fun than a predictable adaptation of a much more entertaining beach read.

Ivan Šardi/Netflix
As Netflix continues to mass-produce original movies, it’s become easier to spot the elements and safeguards put in place to guarantee as many eyeballs as possible so the streamer can gleefully announce on Twitter that one of its films broke a new record for viewership (without providing any evidence).
Frequent consumers of these films—as opposed to the ones purchased and distributed by Netflix—know they’re relatively short, often clocking in under two hours. The plots are simple and easy to follow. They’re paced so that something eventful is happening at every moment to preserve your attention. There’s hardly any experimenting with sound or cinematography. And in case you’re folding laundry or cleaning your bedroom while watching, characters will occasionally announce what they’re doing to keep you up to speed, much like a standard telemovie or a primetime show. Most significantly, because they’re confined to a specific, profit-driven blueprint involving rigorous testing, these movies usually aren’t great.
In that way, it’s not totally surprising that The Weekend Away , Netflix’s latest original film, debuting Thursday, feels more like an errand than a piece of art. The trailer for the new thriller—which is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson, who wrote the script—teased a more complex, mystifying psychological thriller thanks to some crafty editing. And even though the film’s foreign setting and its subject matter, which somewhat resembles the real-life story of Amanda Knox, appeared overly familiar, a crime story about female friendship, sex, drugs, and scattered memories seemed like it could take some fun and exciting turns.
And then there’s the fact that The Weekend Away is a rare star vehicle for Leighton Meester , whose iconic role as Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl in the mid to late aughts never blossomed into the A-list acting career she deserved, despite her appearing in countless mainstream projects in the years since. The new film’s logline even evoked the 2011 thriller The Roommate , in which she gives a thematically retrograde but enthralling performance as a mentally unstable college student who nurtures a frightening obsession with a female friend.
Unfortunately, while a new Netflix movie will most certainly offer Meester more visibility and generate some nostalgia, it doesn’t do her any favors as a talented performer.
It’s easy to see how The Weekend Away , directed by Kim Farrant, works as an engaging beach read, as we get concise glimpses into the characters’ personal lives and their complicated, unhealthy relationships to one another. But the slow build of the novel’s plot and central mystery doesn’t translate well in the screen adaptation, which instead feels eager to get itself over with.
Meester plays Beth, a young mother in an unsatisfying relationship with an English man named Rob (Luke Norris), who has a subtly distrustful vibe we pick up on early in the film. Beth flies from her home in London to Croatia to spend a weekend with her free-spirited, cocaine-snorting best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe), who’s recently divorced and living extravagantly off her ex’s money. When the two go out for a night of clubbing, Kate introduces Beth to a group of men and encourages her to have a one-night stand to potentially re-charge her currently chaste relationship. After agreeing to mingle with the guys, Beth wakes up the next morning with only a few startling memories of the previous night. Blood is splattered on the floor and Kate is nowhere to be found.
Beth promptly reports a missing persons case to Croatian police, who exhibit the level of indifference you would expect about a woman who does coke and takes men home from clubs. From there, we learn some new developments and surprising revelations about Kate and Beth’s relationship and a few mysterious side characters. However, the film maintains a steady, formulaic rhythm throughout that doesn’t allow for any real suspense or emotional buildup before Beth uncovers something new. Likewise, we arrive at different locations and glean new information the way you would move a piece around a board game until you get to the inevitable end.
In relation to the film’s pacing, one of The Weekend Away ’s most glaring issues is that Beth’s journey in solving Kate’s disappearance doesn’t come across as particularly difficult, despite the genuinely stressful and overwhelming situation she’s in. She’s a surprisingly fast-thinking sleuth and vigilante with straightforward opportunities to snap photos, sneak into forbidden areas, and parse through evidence. Additionally, much of her mission is aided by a handsome Syrian cab driver named Zain (Ziad Bakri), whose immaculately timed appearances and selfless contributions to Kate’s case prompt perpetual eye-rolling.
The film makes no effort to counteract the stereotypes and cliches that emerge when a man of Zain’s ethnicity and immigration status acts as an unpaid chauffeur and security guard for a random white woman embroiled in serious legal drama that threatens his own livelihood. There’s a concerted focus on his generosity and kindness that ironically underscores the fact that he shouldn’t be doing Beth any favors at all. Furthermore, his characterization leans into a tired trope that justifies an immigrant’s existence based on their morality and service. Overall, the use of him in this story feels like a white woman’s weird, problematic fantasy that should’ve been left in the drafts and, ideally, never written down at all.
The most promising yet unfulfilled aspect of The Weekend Away is the perplexing friendship at its core that gets little screen time or introspection. In a brief conversation over dinner at the beginning of the film, we see that Kate and Beth’s interests and ways of moving through life are blatantly at odds. At once, Kate seems to admire and long for her friend’s boldness and disregard for traditional social rules while also finding her behavior extremely discomforting. Ultimately, the 90-minute flick doesn’t have enough time to flesh out their dynamic or dig into their history, which would certainly enhance the psychological aspect of the film and make Beth’s possible criminality more of a legitimate question mark.
In sum, The Weekend Away is a waste of Meester’s time and talent, though she’s genuinely good with the material she’s given. During my screening, I kept thinking how much better the film could have been with Meester embodying the more vivacious Kate and, obviously, with the chance to get to know her as more than a tragic party girl. While this movie will probably end up on Netflix's Top 10 list over the weekend and maybe even become a trending topic online, it owes its brilliant star a lot more.

I mean it has it all – an annual weekend getaway with the girls, a woman being accused of killing her best friend, devastating secrets, gorgeous location (Croatia), and the fabulous Leighton Meester on the run trying to figure out what happened!
The fact that it is based on a best seller by Sarah Alderson, who also wrote the screenplay, helps a lot. Though I should point out that there are quite a few differences – not least the main character is called Beth not Orla as she is in the original book.
So yes, The Weekend Away is definitely worth watching!
Cast Of The Weekend Away
I wonder if Leighton Meester ever gets tired of hearing ‘ xoxo ‘? ( Gossip Girl reference).
Anyway in this movie she plays a woman accused of murder when her best friend disappears during a girls weekend away – hence the name of the movie!
But she is not on her own so here is the rest of the cast in the Netflix movie The Weekend Away …
Leighton Meester – Beth, married and mum of one
Luke Norris – Beth's husband
Christina Wolfe – Kate, the best friend who goes missing
Ziad Bakri – Zain the taxi driver who helps Beth
Amar Bukvic – Pavic, the Detective investigating the murder

"The Weekend Away" Is One Twist After Another — Let's Discuss the Ending
"The Weekend Away" on Netflix keeps you guessing the whole way through. The Netflix thriller is about two best friends who take a weekend trip to Croatia, but things go awry when one of them turns up murdered . The movie will have you questioning every character as you try to figure out who is guilty of murder. In the end, it comes down to a twist, because of course it does. If you want to skip to the end to find out what happens — whether you plan to watch the movie or not — here's everything you need to know.
How Does "The Weekend Away" Start?
Beth (Leighton Meester) just had a baby with her husband, Rob (Luke Norris), and her relationship with her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe) has sorta fallen to the wayside. They decide to take a girls' trip to Croatia for the weekend and have some fun. They start the party at the apartment they've rented and then move the festivities to a club. While there, Beth makes it clear she doesn't want to drink anymore, but Kate tries to get her to live a little. They meet up with two men, and while Beth is reluctant to spend time with them, Kate insists. For Beth, it's all a blur from there until she wakes up the next morning and finds that Kate has disappeared.
Who Are the Suspects in "The Weekend Away"?
What "The Weekend Away" does well is it quite literally makes every person in the movie a suspect.
First, we have the two men in the club. We learn that they're escorts who drug women and rob them. Beth and Kate brought them back to their apartment for a nightcap, so they'd be easy to pin Kate's disappearance on.
There's Zain (Ziad Bakri), the taxi driver. He first brings Beth to the apartment and gives her his card in case she needs a taxi at any point. He's also the one to take Beth and Kate to the club. During this ride, Beth learns Zain is from Syria and left to escape the war. Beth trusts him immediately, which may not be wise. He continues to help Beth search for Kate after she goes missing, and the police try to pin him down as a suspect.
We also have Rob, Beth's husband. Though she calls him from Croatia to talk to him and their baby, he's immediately cold with Kate. You quickly pick up on some bad blood between them, though it's not clear what could be the cause of it beyond Kate needling Beth to choose a happier life (aka, one without Rob).
Kate is also recently split from her husband, Jay (Parth Thakerar), who doesn't seem to care that she's turned up missing. He also denies having contact with her since she's come to Croatia, despite what she told Beth. Jay is under the impression that Kate probably just skipped town to punish Beth for being a bad friend.
And let's not forget Pavic (Amar Bukvic), the cop. When Beth goes to file a missing persons report, he writes her off as a drunk, drugged-up tourist and doesn't even file a report. In fact, he pretty much laughs her right out of the station.
Lastly, we have Sebastian (Adrian Pezdirc), the landlord of the apartment Beth and Kate are staying in. He's just a bit creepy, and it turns out he has cameras in all his apartments to spy on guests. Though he tells Beth that it's for security purposes, it seems way too skeevy to be just that.
So who did it?
What Happened the Night Kate Went Missing in "The Weekend Away"?
Thanks to Sebastian's hidden cameras in the apartments, Beth finds that the two escorts did, in fact, come back to their apartment. They put Beth in bed because she'd passed out and then had some fun with Kate. But when Kate goes to shower, the two steal her things and leave. She chases after them, hailing a cab to follow them. But when she loses them in the street, she has the cab driver take her to the police station to file a report. While there, she meets Pavic, who conveniently didn't take down her report and never told his partner or Beth that he'd seen her. Sometime after this, Kate ends up dead in the water, only to be found a couple days later.
Beth figures the sequence of events out and accuses Pavic of hitting on Kate and then killing her when she rejected him. But before anyone can get a confession out of him, he falls to his death. After chasing Beth and attacking her, he trips on a rock and falls as she's screaming at him for killing her friend. It's then assumed that he's the murderer.
"The Weekend Away"'s Twist, Explained
Beth returns home to London after being cleared as a suspect herself. But this is when things get interesting. When Beth gets Kate's belongings back, she tries to break into her phone to see if there are any clues about her whereabouts. Alas, the phone is Face ID protected. But when Kate's body turns up, Beth takes the opportunity to go to the morgue and use the body to open the phone and turn off Face ID. She sees dozens of missed calls from "Handyman." Beth dials the number, and, lo and behold, it's Rob. She flips over to the texts and shockingly finds that Rob and Kate had been having an affair, and Jay knew about it.
Beth tells Rob she knows about it, and he tries to blame her. He tells her that they hadn't been intimate in so long between the baby and Beth being depressed. He also claims it meant nothing. So naturally, after what happened in Croatia, Beth breaks things off.
So now we're at the end of the story, and Beth is bringing the baby to Rob before meeting up with Zain (a good guy all along!) when she finds a bead from Kate's necklace in Rob's coat pocket. She calls the police in Croatia before confronting Rob.
Who Murdered Kate in "The Weekend Away" and Why?
After Kate went to the police station, Pavic brought her back to the apartment and left. But Rob turns up to confront her about the affair. He wants to make sure she hasn't told Beth about them. Kate storms off to the waterfront, and the two get into an argument. Though in the present time, Rob tells Beth Kate was in love with him, the flashback to the night shows that Kate was actually telling Rob it was all a mistake and that she wants to be rid of him (and wants Beth to be too). He gets mad and pushes her, breaking her beaded necklace (which is how he ends up with one in his pocket). She falls and hits her head on a rock, and tumbles into the water. Rather than save her, he leaves, and she drowns.
Flashback to the present time, Beth flees the house with the baby as the police cars come screeching in to arrest Rob, Kate's real killer.
Now that was a roller-coaster ride!

What's the Story?
Beth ( Leighton Meester ) travels to a coastal town in Croatia to spend THE WEEKEND AWAY with her best friend from university, Kate (Christina Wolfe). Beth has a baby at home and a loveless marriage with husband Rob (Luke Norris). Kate wants to show her a good time, and she's also reeling from a bad break-up. The two go out for a night on the town and when Beth wakes up, Kate is missing. Sensing something bad has happened, she enlists the help of a kind taxi driver (Ziad Bakri) to search for clues. When local police officers Paviz (Amar Bukvic) and Kovak (Iva Mihalic) get involved, everyone seems to become a suspect.
Is It Any Good?
This mystery, which feels plucked out of Amanda Knox-style headlines, stays interesting thanks to solid acting, a gorgeous setting, and some unexpected plot twists. Sporting little make-up and a gracious attitude light years away from her Gossip Girl persona, Meester's Beth is a plausibly confused victim in The Weekend Away . She's matched by the excellent Syrian actor Bakri. You can't help but root for the two of them to get together, and the fact ( spoiler alert ) that they don't share an on-screen kiss, but rather a text provides the clue they may have a future together, feels like a questionable choice. The film manages to craft some solid suspense and keeps you glued with a quick pace and some unexpected characters in a truly alluring location.

Channing Tatum’s Blink Twice and Bill Skarsgård’s The Crow are no match for Deadpool & Wolverine at the weekend box office.
After getting bumped from No. 1 last week by Alien: Romulus , Deadline is projecting that 20th Century Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine will reclaim the top spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $18.3 million in ticket sales in 3,840 North American theaters. It the estimate holds, it will bring the superhero movie’s running domestic tally to $577.2 million.
Together with its international ticket sales, Deadpool & Wolverine has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date.
Another 20th Century Studios release, Alien: Romulus , is projected to earn $16.2 million at 3,915 theaters to earn the No. 2 slot in its second weekend, to boost its domestic total to $72.5 million, per the trade publication. Along with its international ticket sales, Alien: Romulus has earned $225.4 million globally so far.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Entertainment reports that Blake Lively’s romantic drama It Ends with Us is projected to take the No. 3 with $11.8 million in 3,839 North American theaters. ‘The Crow’ Crashes With No. 8 Finish
The opening weekend was disastrous for The Crow , a remake of the 1994 supernatural thriller starring Bill Skarsgård, who is reprising the role originated by the late Brandon Lee.
Deadline projects the film will debut at No. 8 at the domestic box office with $4.6 million in ticket sales at 2,752 theaters.
According to Variety , The Crow had a $50 million production budget before P&A. If there’s any saving grace, Lionsgate is only on the hook for the $10 million it laid out for the film’s distribution rights, Variety noted.
The Crow was crushed by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who gave the film a combined 20% “rotten” rating based on 80 reviews. At least The Crow found some favor with viewers using RT , giving the movie a 64% “fresh” audience score based on more than 250 verified user ratings.
While bad reviews don’t always signal the death knell for a new movie, good reviews, on the flip side, don’t automatically guarantee success as evidenced by the positive notices for Blink Twice .
RT critics gave the movie a 78% “fresh” rating based on 144 reviews. The RT Audience Score was 68% fresh based on 250-plus verified user ratings.
Also opening in limited release this weekend is the twisty horror thriller Strange Darling , which Deadline estimates will earn $1 million in domestic ticket sale in 1,135 theaters.
Written and directed by J.T. Mollner, Strange Darling stars Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, and marks the cinematography debut of actor Giovanni Ribisi .
Note: The final numbers for this weekend’s box office will be released on Monday.

Inside the twisty journey of Netflix’s electrifying thriller Rebel Ridge
Director Jeremy Saulnier on the set of Rebel Ridge. Allyson Riggs/Netflix/Netflix
The last time that Jeremy Saulnier released a film, the director of some of the most nerve-rattling and brutal American thrillers of his generation emphasized the importance of having a Plan B .
“As an independent filmmaker who’s self-funded two of my movies, there always has to be a Plan B, because I don’t trust the industry enough as much as I rely upon it,” Saulnier said in 2018, when he was at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of his supernatural-spiked hair-raiser Hold the Dark .
Yet in the years since that conversation, Saulnier has had to cycle through Plans B, C and D to get his follow-up, the electrifying and muscular thriller Rebel Ridge , to audiences.
Initially set to roll in 2020, the Netflix production about a mysterious stranger who gets into a turf war with corrupt cops in a small Southern U.S. town, was stopped dead in its tracks by the pandemic. After regrouping the production a year later, star John Boyega abruptly dropped out in the middle of production .
A year after that, rising British actor Aaron Pierre – best known to Canadian audiences for his standout performance in Clement Virgo’s 2022 drama Brother – stepped in for Boyega, joining a cast that includes Don Johnson as the local police chief and AnnaSophia Robb as a helpful legal aide. And now, two years after shooting wrapped for real this time, Saulnier’s film will finally make its way to fans hungry for a fresh batch of kills from the director of Murder Party , Blue Ruin and Green Room .
Ahead of Rebel Ridge ’s release Sept. 6, Saulnier spoke with The Globe and Mail about a journey as challenging and overwhelming as the ones that his own characters tend to encounter.
You’ve said, “We came back three years in a row to make this movie.” Can you walk me through the challenges?
Rebel Ridge was the fastest script-to-screen trajectory that I’ve ever had. But then the pandemic unfolded, and the film wasn’t a concern. We regrouped in 2021, but just out of respect for everyone involved, I’ll say that version didn’t work out. And it ended up being for everyone’s mutual benefit. When we came back in the third year with Aaron, there was a lot of time to set things straight and to correct course. That’s not just me retroactively making things sort of seem rosy. This was the correct and only way that I could dream of realizing this movie.
You once described Green Room ’s Anton Yelchin as possessing a “delicate balance of tragic vulnerability and intense physicality.” Aaron seems to be an evolution of that – he has an intense physicality, but almost no trace of vulnerability. Or only one that comes out when his character is facing the ultimate threat.
It’s in the casting phase. After connecting over Zoom to explore the idea of him coming on board, I knew two minutes in that he was the only one who could play this character. He’s a big guy and imposing to a twerp like myself, but he’s completely disarming. He has a Zen nature to him. And he was in about 132 of 135 scenes, so it was an ordeal and he was a hero to all of us.
On casting, Don Johnson seems with this role to have mastered the art of playing crooked cops, twisting his Miami Vice image through this, Dragged Across Concrete , HBO’s Watchmen …
I was shooting a commercial in Mexico City when I saw him in Watchmen and knew that I had to make it happen. There’s that gravity of Miami Vice , too. The show is known for the music, the suits. But as a child in the ‘80s watching it, I remember seeing my first ever unhappy ending, when a drug dealer gets away on a pontoon plane. “Dad, he’s getting away!” That Michael Mann aesthetic was what I wanted to tap into. The dialogue in this film, there’s a lot to chew on, but we also kept it quiet sometimes, to get that simple gaze between Don and Aaron.
Your other films have all led up to shocking acts of violence. But this is a slower boil. The pyrotechnics are the interactions between the characters.
The thesis of this movie was how can you play dialogue like action set pieces. How can you build that tension and light that fuse and let it burn? Cutting those scenes was so much fun because if you ground it and humanize it all, that charge is created. We created the energy of live theatre sometimes.
This is the first of your films that you’ve also edited yourself. Why take that on?
I started editing in high school, and I’m deep into the technical side of things. And while I had an amazing editor on Hold the Dark , it was cathartic for me here. I’d been through so much on this film that I wanted to sit with it, comb through every frame. On set as a director, there’s lots of pressure. I don’t sleep well. In the edit room, I’m sitting there alone above my garage. And when you crack the code of marrying two shots together, I was vocally erupting in joy. I didn’t high-five myself, but I could have.
Rebel Ridge is available to stream on Netflix starting Sept. 6.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Represent’ Season 2 On Netflix, Where Stephane Takes Over As France’s Most Unlikely President Ever
Where to stream:, stream it or skip it: ‘the killer’ on peacock, john woo’s new take on his own film, now with nathalie emmanuel , stream it or skip it: ‘hip – high intellectual potential’ on hulu, about a rebellious mom with a high iq who helps the police with murder cases, stream it or skip it: ‘the serpent queen’ season 2 on starz, where catherine de’ medici schemes to hold onto power as her son matures as king, ‘last summer’ director catherine breillat doesn’t see the need for intimacy coordinators on her sets: “they have no science behind what they’re doing”.
At the end of the 1972 film The Candidate , Robert Redford’s Bill McKay runs a dark horse campaign for Senate against a longtime incumbent. When he wins, the last line of the movie is telling; he asks his campaign manager “ What do we do now? ” That’s the theme of the second season of the French comedy Represent.
REPRESENT SEASON 2 : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Opening Shot: A picture of Élysée Palace, where France’s outgoing president addresses the nation, admitting that he didn’t have the best two terms in office.
The Gist: Stéphane Blé (Jean-Pascal Zadi), a youth counselor who lived in Paris’ public housing projects, is about to take over the presidency after a shocking win in the election. He has no real agenda aside from “Eat well, for free,” the slogan he ran on during the election.
When he and his new staff — all from the projects — walk into Élysée Palace, they are greeted by Alice (Vimala Pons), the new head of security; she tells Stéphane about the myriad death threats they’ve received, from just about every group they could think of. The number has been so overwhelming, that two of her predecessors quit under the strain. While they talk, a package comes in with a banana inside it; it’s stuffed with a bullet and a note that is blatantly racist and threatening. Stéphane, feeling that being “from the hood” is all the protection he needs, brushes it off.
Yasmine (Souad Arsane), Stéphane’s chief of staff, tells him he has to pick a prime minister, one who will help him during the parliamentary elections in a few months. He chooses Corinne Douanier (Marina Foïs), his very left-wing opponent in the general election; she insists on being called “Prime Ministress” and wants to push through her extreme environmental reforms.
Before they go to Corinne, though, Stéphane goes back home to try to convince his wife Marion (Fadily Camara) to move in to Élysée Palace with him. She never agreed to live the life of a political wife, and doesn’t seem to be interested. Somehow, though, she’s eventually convinced by , of all people, William Crozon (Eric Judor), Stéphane’s exiled campaign manager who desperately wants to get back in his the new president’s good graces.
What Shows Will It Remind You Of? As we said before Season 1, Represent (Original title: En Place ) feels like Veep meets Spin City meets the uniqueness of French politics.
Our Take: It seemed inevitable that Represent, created by Zadi and François Uzan, would move on from a campaign to the implications of how France’s first Black president is going to have a rough go of it in office. Stéphane, though, takes the notion a number of steps further, as he doesn’t want to stray from the roots of his neighborhood, even though he’s now living in the massive Élysée Palace. His inauguration suit? A white jogging outfit with matching bucket hat. He dons the necklace that’s the symbol of the presidency as if it’s just another piece of bling. He wants his friends to be a part of his staff, even though they’re not really qualified to work in government.
It’s going to make for a season that will be full of mishaps, like when his friend and “co-head of security” Mo (Jean-Claude Muaka) mistakenly identifies an ambassador as a threat, with disastrous results. But there’s also some serious matters, such as the fact that much of France can’t seem to accept a Black president, and we see in the first episode that the threats against Stéphane are real.
The other part of the story is how Marion deals with being the country’s First Lady. She didn’t want any of this; she just wanted to stay in the projects and go to her hairstylist job like she did before. It seems like her and Stéphane’s quest to get pregnant via IVF is on hold. So, will she really make the difference she wants to make or will she chafe in a role she never wanted? And how will that affect things with Stéphane?
In general, though, Represent continues to be a sharp and funny exploration of the political environment in France, one that gets turned on its head by Stéphane’s election.
Sex and Skin: Nothing in the first episode.
Parting Shot: Mo tells Stéphane about his mistake with the ambassador, who’s currently tied up in the basement of the palace.
Sleeper Star: We’ll give this once again to Fadily Camara as Marion, because she still seems to be the only person in Stéphane’s life who has her head screwed on straight.
Most Pilot-y Line: In a meeting with the outgoing president, Stéphane is excited to get the “code”, until he finds out that it’s the Wifi password.
Our Call: STREAM IT. Represent ‘s second season explores the “now what?” part of Stéphane’s unlikely run for President, and his fumbling attempts to change the office for the better should make for a funny scenario.

Breathless review: Is Netflix's Grey's Anatomy-style show any good?
The Spanish drama streams this week.
Set in a Valencia hospital, Netflix's Breathless sees a group of residents battle through the public healthcare system to get their medical licenses, all while trying to enjoy themselves from time to time. Alternatively called Respira, the eight-parter is a bit like Grey's Anatomy by way of Élite with a smattering of 24 Hours in A&E .
The Spanish soap-slash-procedural drama throws us straight into the surgery room. It's familiar fare: pale blue scrubs, scalpels, equipment beeping with life, a sliver of exposed flesh beneath a canopy of operating cloth. Except a full hands-down walkout is brewing in the corridors outside as the clock ticks down to midnight.
One of the hot doctors – like Élite 's Las Encinas private school, everyone in Joaquín Sorolla hospital is hot – has to decide whether to cross the picket line and keep operating or sew the patient up with a tumour still inside. It's high drama.
We then jump back to two months before, when an MGMT needle drop and the natural beauty of Spain cue us into the fact that this was when the times were slightly better. Our leading man Biel ( Élite 's Manu Ríos) arrives at the hospital for his shift, people repeatedly remarking on how handsome he is as he goes. As you do.
Within ten minutes of the pilot episode, Biel has his shirt off to change into scrubs, with no explanation for how a trainee doctor has had the time to chisel out a 12-pack. On shift, he attends to a Valencian government official, who joins the chorus of characters telling him he's handsome. After a bit more inappropriate behaviour, Biel notices she has a lump on her breast.
If it isn't clear already, Breathless isn't hugely realistic. For one thing, Valencia starts to feel a bit like Desperate Housewives 's Wisteria Lane, where everyone knows everyone else or is connected in some which way.
The hospital residents have clubbed together on a place, where they have collectively adopted a mantra that all work and no play makes Breathless a dull show. So alongside the fraught A&E firefighting, there are hungover shifts, beachside parties, chemsex and STD scares.
If this all sounds a bit more like high-school fodder than a frenetic episode of Greys , fear not, it all contributes to a feeling in the emergency room that the overstretched hospital staff are dancing on the edge of a cliff. As the episodes roll on, some of them fall over it.
The sight of a public health system on the brink is unfortunately a familiar one, but it's scarily heightened in this world where the cast are as interconnected as stops on a tube map, but there isn't the time or manpower to save everyone.
Again and again, residents call for help from qualified doctors who they're told are too busy to come. When medical catastrophe arrives, exactly how the tragedy happened is all too obvious – as is why that strike eventually arrives months later.
It's not the best incentive for donning scrubs yourself and if you're particularly squeamish, this might not be the one for you. Much like Grey's keeps the props department's blood supply on tap, Breathless cuts from sliced-up scalps and blades cutting into gushing wounds to gloved hands rooting around in anaesthetised bodies.
With the stakes rocketed to life-or-death heights, the show is a fairly stressful watch. Sorolla hospital is a mess of human activity, staff running from room to room. There's a lot going on; some of the varying storylines and characters could have been sliced off.
It's not completely clear who Breathless is for. Élite ' s YA army will likely be put off by the politicking and the gore, while hardline medical procedural fans will guffaw at some of the plot contrivances.
But fans of Grey's looking for something fresh-faced on a similar soapy level will relish the melodrama, and with only eight episodes, the barrier to entry is much lower than the now 20-season Shonda show.
Breathless is available to stream on Netflix from August 30.

Written by Sarah Alderson from her own novel and directed by Kim Farrant, the new Netflix thriller "The Weekend Away" is cut from the same cloth as those great cheesy '90s thrillers like "Double Jeopardy" where the plot has more twists than the serpentine roads Beth's taxi takes to get to her AirBnB. The Weekend Away Review. Fast-paced and perfectly edited, at a wonderfully-succinct 1-hour and 31-minutes exactly, The Weekend Away is the ultimate summer-holiday thriller experience. Audiences will be rethinking suspects and re-examining the night in question from all angles; It's a twisty ride with a very satisfying ending.
Purewow Review: 2.5 Stars. Disappointingly, The Weekend Away is a very middle-of-the-road thriller that doesn't use its arresting lead to its advantage. Instead of acting as a cinematic getaway, the movie feels like a winding rehash of every psychological thriller of the past ten years. Yes, we did love Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.
1. Summary. With bad acting, poor writing, and drab execution, all goes wrong with The Weekend Away. This review of the Netflix film The Weekend Away does not contain spoilers. A good thriller always knows how to play with the audience's anticipations. Leighton Meester-starring new Netflix film The Weekend Away misses that drastically.
