A Summary of Motor Yacht SOKAR

The motor yacht SOKAR is a 65 metre 212 (ft) substantial steel vessel which was manufactured at Codecasa Yachts and designed by Codecasa and Vincenzo Ruggiero and Howard & Horsfield. Accommodating 18 guests and 14 crew, motor yacht SOKAR was formerly Jonikal as her project name or yacht title. Completed in the year of 1990 her reasonably modern interior decoration demonstrates the stately ambience of owner and Carlo Sforzi & Eugenio Manfredini/Vittorio Cerruti/Howard & Horsfield.

New Build & Naval Architecture for Luxury Yacht SOKAR

Codecasa was the naval architect firm involved in the formal superyacht plans for SOKAR. Her interior design was conceived by Carlo Sforzi & Eugenio Manfredini/Vittorio Cerruti/Howard & Horsfield. Codecasa and Vincenzo Ruggiero and Howard & Horsfield is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. Created at decasa Yachts the vessel was constructed in the known yacht building country Italy. She was officially launched in Viareggio in 1990 before being delivered to the owner. A spacious proportion is achieved with a maximum beam (width) of 10.4 m or 34.2 ft. With a 3.9m (12.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built from aluminium. In 2008 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

M/Y SOKAR Engines / Performance:

Powered by two WARTSILA diesel main engines, SOKAR is able to attain a high speed of 20 knots. Connected to her Wartsila engine(s) are twin screw propellers. She also has an efficient range of 9000 miles when motoring at her cruising speed of 17 knots. Her total HP is 7520 HP and her total Kilowatts are 5600. Regarding thrusters she utilises Lips. As for the yacht’s stabalisers she uses Blohm + Voss.

The Accommodation Capacity On Aboard Superyacht SOKAR:

The large luxury yacht M/Y SOKAR is able to accommodate a total of 18 passengers and has 14 crew.

During October 2009 SOKAR traveled to Saint-Tropez, in France. This motor yacht has traveled the cruising ground near Département du Var during the month of Sept 2009. The yacht was installed with Carrier AC. Her deck material is predominantly a teak deck.

The super yacht Princess Diana shared with Dodi Fayed is up for sale – see inside

Since her untimely death in August of 1997, Princess Diana ’s last summer spent with Dodi Al-Fayed has been described in various ways: a passionate love affair, a fake publicity stunt, a temporary fling, a rouse to infuriate another suitor, or the beginning of a lifelong commitment. Although the stories change, the setting remains: a summer tour through the Mediterranean aboard a multi-million dollar super yacht. Later this year, nearly 25 years to the day, the 208-foot vessel will launch for sale again. 

The yacht is full of glossy and dark wood paneling. 

Originally named Jonikal , then Sokar , and most recently Bash , the luxury vessel was first owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed, former owner of Harrods and father of Dodi Al-Fayed. During the fateful summer, Al-Fayed hosted Princess Di and her two sons aboard the Jonikal . After the couple’s tragic death, Mohamed Al-Fayed attempted to sell the yacht numerous times before it was finally bought in 2014. It was most recently purchased by Bassim Haidar in June of 2021, who is selling it just over a year later as he reportedly has plans to upgrade to a larger vessel. “She is in the yard being refitted, and will be launched for sale in September,” said John Wood, director at Seawood Yachts.

Coffered ceilings add a dramatic, yet timeless feel. 

Bash , as the yacht is currently named, was designed by navel architect Vincenzo Ruggiero in the 1980s and built by the superyacht building firm Codecasa before launching in 1990. The vessel can hold up to 18 people across nine staterooms in addition to rooms for 26 crew members. Among many notable features, Bash includes a jacuzzi, swim platform, sun deck, a formal dining room, main saloon, a bar, and office space. Full of dark wood paneling and coffered ceilings, the interiors are reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts style of the early 1900s.

The vessel includes nine staterooms in addition to plenty of space for the crew. 

Powered by Wärtsilä engines, the yacht has a cruising speed of 15 knots and top speeds of 20 knots. Even though an exact price hasn’t been advertised just yet, the last time the boat was sold, it was listed for $10,000,000.

‘My Seanna’ is a 184.97ft /56.38m custom motor yacht built in 2001 by Delta Marine and last refitted in 2014. Previously named Newvida, her luxurious interior and exterior is the work of Johnson Design.

A Jacuzzi on deck is great for relaxing after a long day at sea, you’ll love the on board gym kitted out with the latest exercise equipment.

She also comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

While on board you’ll find a great Wi-Fi connection, so you can check emails or share your experience on social media. Air conditioning keeps conditions comfortable throughout the cabins, even on hot, sticky days.

FROM THE VAULTS: Princess Diana Relaxes on Yacht Sokar – Available to Rent

Everyone needs a luxury yacht vacation, even royalty.

And the world’s sweetheart and “The People’s Princess,”  Princess Diana (Princess of Wales)  was no different, when life ashore got too much for her due to global interest in her personal life….

In the summer of 1997, she stepped aboard the superyacht Sokar (known as Jonikal at the time) with new love Dodi Fayed (son of Egyptian billionaire, ex Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed) – the pair had been involved from July, despite Dodi’s engagement model to American model Kelly Fisher.

She is seen getting on board Sokar in St. Tropez above, later checking out the yacht’s huge sundeck. The 207ft (63m) luxury yacht was built in 1989 (refitted in 1999) and its traditionally styled throughout, with accommodation for up to 12 guests. A crew of 22 people cater to guests’ every need, with amazing amenities including a helipad, jacuzzi and the latest entertainment systems.

Dodi’s father sold the yacht to an unknown buyer in 2014 for $13 million, after being for sale for several years.

The family yacht provided a much-needed getaway from the fallout of the end of Diana’s 15-year marriage to Prince Charles, which officially ended on 28 August 1996. The couple visited the glamorous sights of the French and Italian Riviera  over 9 days.

Sadly she died in a car crash with Dodi in Paris on 31st August 1997.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

"She is my little angel, my star," Esme, whose mom Angela Bacares was among the 15 survivors, shared in a statement obtained by Sky News earlier this week. "She had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals."

Esme also reminisced about the simple moments she had with her sister, who was set to attend Oxford University this fall. 

"Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me," Esme explained. "Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice. No matter what, she brought boundless love to me. She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me."

A spokesperson for the Lynch family also shared a statement Aug. 23, per The Washington Post , writing that they were "devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends."

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy," the statement continued. "They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief."

Hannah was among the six passengers who went missing on Aug. 19 when their luxury boat was hit by a water tornado called a "waterspout." Days after the incident, the Italian Coast Guard confirmed that they had recovered the body of the final passenger—a woman whose body was found a day after Mike’s was also found. Sources close familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News that rescuers were still searching for Hannah before the body was recovered.

The others who were recovered were Mike's associates, many of whom were part of his defense during his fraud case, including Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer ; lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo , the Director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency Salvatore Cocina told NBC News. The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas , was also recovered shortly after the incident.

Angela was rescued with nine crew members and two other passengers. Eight were taken to a nearby hospital and the rest were brought to a local hotel. In total, 15 passengers of the 22 passengers survived. 

The head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, Dr. Fabio Genco , recalled what the survivors had told him and investigators after the storm.

"They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he shared with NBC News . "All the objects were falling on them. That's why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," he continued. "The whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."
