The River: The tale of a young riverboat captain who wants ‘to stay on the river forever’

The riverboat captain is a storyteller, and Captain Don Sanders shares the stories of his long association with the river — from discovery to a way of love and life. This a part of a long and continuing story. It first appeared in August, 2019.

I often urged youngsters to “gather ye rosebuds.” It seems one recently-minted young captain has gathered an armload of buds already.

Alex Schuchter, age 19, who has been mentioned in this column before, commanded his first passenger excursion boat, BB Riverboats, RIVER QUEEN, for the first time this past week. This extraordinary feat, though not unheard of in river history, beat my record for being in charge of a boatload of paying tourists by some 13 years.

Alex and I met on Facebook a few years ago when he seemed to want to get into any river discussion he could with seasoned captains and other river people. We’d seen others with such pluck before – all talk, no action, and soon to fade away. But, while still a student at Campbell County High School, in Northern Kentucky, in the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio area, young Alex stuck to his guns and remained determined to find his niche within the close-knit river fraternity. 

After a while, some of us old-timers, exchanging messages on Chat, figured that Alex might actually “have the right stuff,” when it came to what working on riverboats meant. Forget the calliopes, crinoline-laced southern belles, and tinkling champagne glasses — I’m talking hard, dirty, and sometimes dangerous work while loving every minute of it. This Schuchter fellow seemed to be the “real deal,” as he proved so by his willingness to do whatever it took to accomplish the mission of the boats he worked aboard. 

When asked why he wanted to work on the river, Alex replied: “You’re not the first to ask that, and I’ve never been able to give a certain answer. There’s just something about it that called out to me and drew me in. The first thing that sparked my interest was a painting I found at a Goodwill store of the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN when I was eleven. I bought it, took it home, and researched the boat to find it was just cut up for scrap that year. I was so sad, and then I remembered the boats in Newport.”  

By the “boats in Newport,” Alex meant BB Riverboats of Newport, Kentucky, a premier excursion boat company owned and operated by my long-time friend and riverboat associate, Captain Alan Bernstein and his energetic family.  Alex went on to disclose: “I started calling BB when I was twelve, asking for a job; it wasn’t until I turned fourteen that they finally said okay.”

When I reminded Alex that many of us older river types were skeptical at first until we realized he was serious and willing to work, his comeback was: “I couldn’t be any happier to be doing what I am!”

“So true, “I replied. “You’re in the club, now, and many eyes are watching you. I see some ‘big guns’ on the river are congratulating you.”

“It feels amazing, Alex continued, ” to have all the support coming from everyone – makes one proud of their work!”

Asked who helped him along, as every successful boat professional had someone who helped them achieve their goals as Walter Hoffmeier, Captain Ernest E. Wagner, Harry Louden, and others did for me, Alex answered: “All the Captains at BB and others gave good advice, and most certainly yourself!”

“Captain Al gave me amazing encouragement, as well as Cap’n Kerry. Al did not doubt my potential from the start.”

When asked how his family liked his choice of the river industry for his career ventures, Alex said, “They’re extremely proud and excited for me; especially my grandparents. But my parents are equally excited!”

My parents, I reflected, were not especially supportive of my decision to follow the river until well after I was a Captain on the DELTA QUEEN and they rode the legendary steamboat to Pittsburgh and back to Cincinnati with the oldest son in charge. Only then did they see the worth in what I choose to do with my life. Having family support, I understand personally, especially for one as young as Alex standing on the crossroads of his career path is especially meaningful. 

After I wondered what future career goals Cap’n Schuchter had in mind, he remarked: “Eventually upgrade my 100-ton Master’s license to Unlimited Master of Motor or Steam Vessels; with a First-Class Pilot license.”

While he added, “In a perfect world, the DELTA QUEEN would be forever exempt (from the Safety and Life at Sea Law), and I would retire from that boat. Whatever happens though, I want to be on the river forever.”

“Forever” is a mighty long time. But if Captain Alex lasts as long as I have on the river, the year 2100 will only be 22 years into his future. May those years between now and then be eventful, fun, safe, and full of adventures… and may he keep collecting those rosebuds while encouraging youngsters following him to grab their own buds.

Captain Don Sanders is a river man. He has been a riverboat captain with the Delta Queen Steamboat Company and with Rising Star Casino. He learned to fly an airplane before he learned to drive a “machine” and became a captain in the USAF. He is an adventurer, a historian, and a storyteller. Now, he is a columnist for the NKyTribune and will share his stories of growing up in Covington and his stories of the river. Hang on for the ride — the river never looked so good.

Kudos to Capt. Alex for stepping up with a river-hearted, can/will-do attitude. Kudos also to all those who took him in “under their wings”. Excellent example of how knowledge and skills move from one generation to the next. Thanks, Capt. Don and NKYTribune for the continuing life-on-the-river stories.

You bet Captain Alex has “the right stuff!” I’ve been on a BB cruise recently, and although he was not on the boat, was happy to run into him when I got off. And I was sure to point other friends in his direction when they cruised. I’m thrilled for him. I want him to get the biggest license he can, and it would be wonderful to have him piloting for people I love, be it the Delta Queen, or BB Riverboats, as long as it makes him happy. He is a great guy, and I am so happy for him!

I believe I met Alex on the American Countess a couple years ago. We got into a discussion about the Delta Queen and Capt Don Sanders. He was a delightful young man committed to the river.

I wish him a long and fulfilling career on the rivers. There are far many less interesting “offices” to report to for years at a time.

Not only is Alex a crewmate,but a brother and has always been supportive of anyone wanting to “try out” on the river. We have had alot of adventures and I am sure there are a lifetime more coming over the Dam. Very proud of his accomplishments and hope to help him attain even more.

River otter pulls young child into WA water, attacks family at marina

BREMERTON, Wash. - A young child was pulled into the water by a river otter Thursday morning while walking on the dock at Bremerton Marina in Kitsap County .

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reported that at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, officers were alerted to the incident after the victim's mother called for help. She told officials that the otter dragged the child under the water. The child managed to resurface, and the mother rescued the child from the water, but the otter continued to attack and bit her. As the family retreated, the otter pursued them.

The child suffered bites and scratches to the head, face and legs, and was subsequently treated at a hospital in Silverdale.

WDFW Sergeant Ken Balazs commended the mother for her swift response and the child's resilience.

"We are grateful the victim only sustained minor injuries," said Balazs. He also expressed gratitude towards the Port of Bremerton for their rapid coordination and communication with marina patrons.

Following the attack, WDFW enlisted the help of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services to capture and humanely euthanize the river otters from the marina for testing, including assessments for possible rabies infection, at the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab.

River otters, native to Washington, inhabit various water bodies and are known for their aquatic lifestyle. They are known as furbearers, a designation for game species that can be legally trapped. While river otter encounters with humans are infrequent, there have been six reported incidents in the state over the past ten years. The animals can be defensive of their territory and display unpredictable behavior.

The WDFW is committed to ensuring public safety and managing the state's wildlife population responsibly.

Faron Young (February 25, 1932 – December 10, 1996) was an American country music singer and songwriter from the early 1950s into the mid-1980s and one of its most successful and colorful stars. Hits including "If You Ain't Lovin' (You Ain't Livin')" and "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young" marked him as a honky-tonk singer in sound and personal style; and his chart-topping singles "Hello Walls" and "It's Four in the Morning" showed his versatility as a vocalist. Known as the Hillbilly Heartthrob, and following a movie role, the Young Sheriff, Young's singles reliably charted for more than 30 years. He committed suicide in 1996. River Otter Drags Young Child Underwater in Washington State

Yesterday morning, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) says it received a report of an otter attack on a mother and her young child at the Bremerton Marina. The otter managed to pull the child into and under the water. The mother and child sustained injuries but survived the attack, and wildlife officials are looking for the otter(s) involved in the incident.

WDFW says the mother and child were walking on the marina’s dock when the river otter attacked. It dragged the child underwater, but the child got free and resurfaced after a few moments.

“The child’s mother was able to lift the child out of the water while the otter continued to attack and was subsequently bit in the arm,” WDFW says in a press release . “The river otter continued to pursue the family as they left the dock. The child sustained scratches and bites to the top of the head, face and legs.”

Medical professionals treated the child’s injuries at a local hospital.

“WDFW Fish and Wildlife officers contacted the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services to trap and lethally remove the river otters from the marina,” WDFW says.

From there, the department says the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab will evaluate the otter(s) and test for rabies.

Are Otter Attacks Common?

River otters  ( Lontra canadensis ) live in fresh, brackish, and even saltwater habitats throughout Washington. According to WDFW, there have only been six documented human-river otter incidents in Washington in the last decade. However, this news comes on the heels of a report of a jogger in Malaysia who was recently attacked by a group of otters.

“Although encounters with river otters are rare, they can be territorial and, like any wildlife, are inherently unpredictable,” the department says.

We generally think of otters (both river otters and their larger marine cousins, sea otters) as cuddly and cute . And they are, but they’re also wild animals. Always give wild animals space and never assume that cute animals aren’t dangerous .

Several people were taken into custody Saturday night after a fight broke out at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park in Alabama, authorities said.

The Montgomery Police Department responded to a disturbance at the 200 block of Coosa Street in Montgomery, Alabama, at 7 p.m. after a large group of people were fighting. Several people were detained, police said.

A video of the incident, which appeared to be racially divided, was shared Sunday on social media. It’s been reported that it began because a pontoon boat was blocking dock space needed to park a riverboat. That area is the regular spot reserved for the Harriott II Riverboat.

One short video, posted on social media by Josh Moon of the Alabama Political Reporter, shows several white people fighting a single Black man, who according to Jasmine Williams of WSFA is a dock worker.

The only audio heard is from witnesses yelling, but it appears to begin with an argument between the Black man and one of the white men. Another white man rushes and hits the Black man, who backs up and tosses his hat into the air. Then the fight begins in earnest, and several white people begin hitting the Black man.

During the video, one witness, apparently watching from the riverboat, screamed repeatedly, “Y’all help that brother!” to onlookers who were on shore. It appears some people from the shore did join in to defend him, and the video shows at least one Black man dive into the water from the riverboat.

“Get up there, young buck!” yelled another voice on the video.

By the time the swimmer climbed up onto the dock, about a minute into the video, most of the altercation appeared to be over in Moon's video.

A separate video posted by Lauryn Lauren shows scenes after that, as the Harriott II was preparing to dock. A group of people approached the pontoon boat, and more fighting broke out. At least one person fell into the water from the dock. Authorities were soon on the scene and police began taking people into custody .

Authorities have not released the names of the detained suspects. Charges against anyone involved in the fight are pending, MPD said.

1 dead after St. Pete boat crash, teens aboard vessel identified

Good samaritan helps after deadly boat crash.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - One of the teens that was ejected from a boat that crashed in St. Petersburg on Sunday night died, according to officials.

On Sunday around 4:30 p.m., authorities responded to reports of a boating accident near Bayshore Boulevard in St. Pete.

Two teenagers were hospitalized in critical condition after a boat crash in St. Pete Sunday evening. Jennifer Kveglis reports.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), United States Coast Guard (USCG), St. Petersburg Police Department, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) all responded to the scene.

Two 15-year-old boys, Collin Moorefield and Christian Tharakan were both on the 18-foot vessel when it hit a dock, according to FWC.

The investigation revealed that both boys were thrown into the water.

Jonathan Carlon hopped onto the 2024 18-foot Key West Center Console boat after it crashed the second time, into his seawall four houses away from where the teens were ejected. 

"It was like something out of a movie, an unmanned boat going full speed at the seawall," Carlon said. "My immediate concern was I knew my wife and my daughter were outside. My daughter loves going on the dock."

Carlon said he quickly jumped into action and hopped over his fence, onto his seawall. "...off the seawall, into the boat and killed the power, turned the motor off, grabbed the anchor line and lassoed it around the neighbor's dock," he said.

Carlon noticed a cell phone on the boat was still playing music.

"At that point, it was very unclear how many people were on the boat originally," he said.

As the scene began to wrap up, an unknown man showed up.

"The father of one of the kids came into the backyard. We didn't know who he was at the time. He asked if there was anything that he could do," Carlon recalled. "My wife, she was holding my daughter at the time, and she gave me my daughter, and she said, 'I have to give him a hug' and she hugged him, and you could hear them both bawling. It was heartbreaking."

Officials say Tharakan, the operator of the boat, was recovered from the water.

The FWC, PCSO and St. Petersburg Fire Rescue says they searched for Moorefield who was found by a good Samaritan and a St. Petersburg Police Department Officer.

The teens were taken to a local hospital, which is where Moorefield died, according to authorities. FWC says Tharakan has non-life threatening injuries.

"We would like to express our condolences to the Moorefield family and ask that the public give the family space during this difficult time," said Major Evan Laskowski, Southwest Regional Commander in a statement. "As a father myself, I can only begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing right now. I want them to know we are thinking and praying for them during this time."

The FWC is leading the active investigation with assistance from St. Petersburg Police Department.

Carlon believes it was a freak accident.

"We see people driving their boats recklessly, doing things that they shouldn't be all the time. This wasn't that. It just seemed like a terrible accident," he shared.
