Insurers of the Mallorca -based Bayesian superyacht that sank this month, killing tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others, could be on the hook for at least $150 million , according to the first estimates by industry experts. The British-flagged 56-metre-long (184-foot-long) yacht, which the experts estimated cost around $40 million, capsized and went down on August 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

The superyacht’s hull was insured against physical damage by yacht insurance provider OMAC and a consortium of insurers including Travelers Companies Inc, Navium Marine and Convex, Reuters reported last week. Its protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, which typically covers third-party liability claims including for environmental damage, injury and death, was provided by British Marine. The hull was likely insured for around $40 million, while the P&I cover would be larger, insurance sources said.

“Our understanding is that the cost of the boat was between $40 and $50 million, so the limit of the hull & machinery policy was probably around those values,” said Marcos Alvarez, managing director, global financial institution ratings at Morningstar DBR. The P&I policy would likely be “several multiples” of the hull policy, or $200-300 million, Alvarez added, noting it would also likely cover liability payments even if the captain or crew are found to be negligent.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, are investigating the captain and two other crew members. An investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will follow. Prosecutors have said the probe would take time and require salvaging the wreck. Oscar Seikaly, CEO of broker NSI Insurance Group, that provides yacht insurance, estimated the hull value at $40-70 million, but said P&I cover might not total more than $100 million. P&I insurance would also cover recovery of the Bayesian, said Francesco Dubbioso, country manager for Italy for insurer Alta Signa Europe, who estimated the superyacht’s value at $30 million to $40 million.

Reuters is the first to report the potential insurance costs. OMAC, Travelers and Navium Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ for comment. Convex declined to comment. The Bayesian disaster, which has puzzled experts who said the boat would have been built to withstand a severe storm, adds to recent woes for yacht insurers , who have faced a raft of hurricane losses in the past few years. Premium rates have risen by four to five times in the past couple of years in parts of the U.S. and the Caribbean, and yacht insurers have cut the amount of cover they provide because of the risks, Seikaly said.

As a result, insurers have increased rates and re-evaluated their guidelines and risk appetite , according to industry experts. As well as hurricanes, insured losses have mostly stemmed from severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh. Seikaly said four clients had last week been ready to buy boats but changed their minds because of the high cost of insurance.

Climate change was also likely to add to yacht insurers’ worries, Seikaly added, as it throws up more unexpected events. “Whoever thought a storm in the Mediterranean in the month of August is going to sink a ship?” The captain of the yacht, James Cutfield is recovering at his home in Mallorca , according to sources close to him, while a team of lawyers, led by Aldo Mordiglia, is working on his defence. The captain is said to have arrived on the island, where he lives with his family, on Tuesday night aboard a private jet which flew from Palma to Palermo to collect him. Although his passport has been withdrawn by the Italian judiciary, Cutfield has a certified photocopy which allows him freedom of movement.

The captain of the Bayesian superyacht was due to leave Italy on Thursday as a police probe into manslaughter continues.

Skipper James Cutfield, 51, came under investigation for shipwreck and manslaughter on Monday, a week after the luxury vessel sank off the coast of Sicily killing seven people.

Cutfield, who lost his passport in the tragedy, has been given a copy by officials so he can leave Italy with his wife and head home to Mallorca.

He is expected to leave by Friday morning at the latest, Italian outlet Giornale Di Sicilia reports.

James Cutfield’s lawyers this week revealed how he was too ‘shaken up’ to answer questions from officials on Tuesday

Prosecutors are also probing two other members of the crew - engineer Tim Parker-Eaton, from Clophill, Beds, and sailor Matthew Griffith, 22.

The investigation into culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter does not imply guilt or necessarily mean formal charges will be brought against the three men.

The luxury 184ft superyacht, worth $58 million, sank while anchored off the coast of Porticello on August 19 after it was caught up in a freak storm.

Of the 22 on-board, 15 survived and seven died including Brit billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah along with yacht chef Recaldo Thomas.

The remaining four victims were two married couples invited on the trip by the Lynch family who were celebrating Mike’s recent acquittal in a US fraud case.

Cutfield’s lawyers this week revealed how he was too “shaken up” to answer questions from officials on Tuesday at a hotel in Palermo.

Solicitor Aldo Mordiglia told The Times he had “exercised his right to remain silent”.

“There were two reasons. He is understandably very shaken up, and secondly, us lawyers were only appointed yesterday and we need to acquire information we do not have in order to defend him.”

Crew member Griffith is understood to have been on watch the night of the tragedy, a judicial source told Reuters on Wednesday.

Parker-Eaton is suspected of having failed to protect the engine room and operating systems when it was hit by a storm.

Reports suggest crew bedrooms have been searched, with at least two phones seized.

Under Italian maritime laws, the full responsibility for the welfare of a ship, its crew, and passengers lies with the captain of a vessel.

The wreck survivors, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, 57, left Sicily in a private jet on Sunday, with most of the crew also set to leave after being grilled by investigators.

Divers spent five days scouring the Bayesian wreck to retrieve the bodies of six missing passengers last week.

They found Mike Lynch and his four guests, Chris and Neda Morvillo and Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, in the first cabin on the left.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was the last passenger to be discovered in the third cabin.

Officials said the victims had scrambled to reach air pockets in the yacht as it sank stern-first before rolling onto its right side on the seabed.

Investigators are understood to be rifling through CCTV footage and photographs taken by locals on the night of the storm to understand why the boat sank so quickly.

At a press conference at the Termini Imerese Courthouse on Saturday, Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said there may have been “behaviours that were not perfectly in order with regard to the responsibility everybody had”.

His team will probe if hatches were left open, allowing water to flood in.

They will also look into whether the crew raised the alarm before escaping.

He vowed to “discover how much they knew and to what extent all the people (passengers) were warned”.

Junger Fischer von Luxusyacht vor Mallorca totgefahren – Polizei verhört Mann aus Deutschland

Stand: 30.08.2024, 10:20 Uhr

Mallorca: Skipper wirkte stark alkoholisiert

Italy prosecutors widen probe into superyacht tragedy off Sicily

P rosecutors have put under investigation two more crew members of the Bayesian, the superyacht that sank off Sicily last week, killing seven people, their lawyer said on Friday.

The move widens the probe into the tragic shipwreck, for which the ship’s captain, James Cutfield, is already under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

The captain flew out of Palermo on Thursday. He left the Sicilian capital on a private jet, an investigative source said, adding the destination of the flight was unknown. Cutfield, a New Zealander, lives with his wife in Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Since Wednesday, Tim Parker Eaton — the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room — and sailor Matthew Griffith — who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster — are under investigation for the same possible charges, their lawyer said.

“The profile of their possible responsibilities is still unclear, as the investigation has just started,” lawyer Mario Scopesi told The Associated Press.

Scopesi added that both Parker Eaton and Griffith left Italy on Wednesday, along with Cutfield and the rest of the crew.

The three crew members were among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who is heading the investigation, has said his team will consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near Sicily, in the Mediterranean. Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

All crewmembers survived except for the chef, but six passengers were trapped in the yacht's hull and died.

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

Yacht-Drama: Anwalt von Millionärssohn äußert Pinkel-Theorie

Freier Korrespondent in Spanien

Berlin.

| M. A. Cañellas

Stand: 29.08.2024, 19:23 Uhr

Guide to Mallorca

Idyllic Mediterranean beauty

The largest of the Balearic Islands , Mallorca (Majorca) is perfect yacht charter territory thanks to its turquoise-blue waters, secret coves, soft golden sands, soaring mountaintops and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital. Wonderfully diverse with many hidden gems to uncover, this magnificent island is a must-see destination.

Mallorca sits off the east coast of Spain, bathing in the sparkling Mediterranean Sea alongside her Balearic sisters: Ibiza , Menorca and Formentera . A stunning coastline of bone-white beaches, pine-flecked bays and deserted coves is undoubtedly the island’s main draw, but you’ll be enticed to extend your stay by the exquisite natural beauty of the island’s hinterland.

Located along the south coast, the Spanish city of Palma de Mallorca is the island’s thriving capital. World-class superyacht facilities here make it easy for yacht-goers to step ashore and experience the city’s designer shopping, exclusive restaurants, thriving art scene and magnificent gothic architecture.

Elsewhere on the south coast, sandy stretches backed by pine trees await your arrival, while idyllic coves and secluded beaches are sheltered by rocky faces in the east, soaring cliffs carve out hidden paradises in the west and, in the north, the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the gorgeous bays of Badia de Pollenca and Badi d’Alcudia.

Mallorca’s interior is certainly resplendent in natural wonders. As well as the limestone mountain range of the north, there are fertile plains with olive groves, windmills and old market towns, monasteries atop rolling green hills, vineyards producing world-class wines, and the nature reserves of Sa Dragonera and Albufera.

Such landscapes ensure Mallorca has something to offer everybody on a Mediterranean yacht charter , from relaxing on the beach and trying out the latest watersports to hiking and cycling. There is also an exciting food scene from the cosmopolitan eateries of the city to the hearty dishes of the traditional inland restaurants to coastal bistros serving the catch of the day.

Discover what this Spanish island can offer to you and your family by getting in touch with your preferred charter broker to discuss itinerary options and the best places and times to visit. Also, be sure to have a browse of all the crewed yachts available for charter in Spain .

The Balearics islands yacht charters

The Balearics islands yacht charters

Strategically positioned on ancient trading routs between  Europe and Africa, these islands got their fair share of invaders:  Greeks, Romans, Turks, etc. Christian kings, Arab rulers and Jewish  merchants have all left their mark there. With a yacht charter in  Mallorca you can easily explore its diverse architectural heritage, in  colorful fiestas, ceremonies and cuisine.

Like mainland of Spain, the Balearics Islands have been inhabited  since pre-historic times. So many invaders laid claim to them at various  points in history. Both Catalan and Castilian Spanish are spoken in the  Balearics Islands, which has been an autonomous region since 1983.

One of the Balearic Islands yacht charter bases is located in  Mallorca, a beautiful mountainous island, with rolling hills, sandy  beaches and stalagmite caves. It's landscape, culture and entertainment  offers a wide range of experiences during your sailing vacation. And it  is also by far the most culturally rich.

The great Polish composer Frederic Chopin stayed at the monastery of  Valldemossa with his lover Aurora Dupin, better known as the French  novelist George Sand, in the winter of 1838, where he composed his 24  preludes. The English poet Robert Graves hosted Pablo Picasso and actors  Alec Guiness and Peter Ustinov at his house. The painter and sculptor  Joan Miro also found his home here. His works are on display in the  Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro, on the outskirts of Palma.

Yacht charter Mallorca is incredibly diverse in its landscape,  architecture, culture or just entertainment. There is so much to enjoy  in Palma during a sailing vacation: from stunning nature reserves and  charming fishing villages to picturesque ruins and impressive country  estates. With bareboat or skippered charter you'll get whatever you want  here: wonderful beaches and vibrant nightlife with dancing and music,  or rural retreats with sedate and peaceful atmosphere.

Mallorca sailing conditions

The climate is mild, typically Mediterranean, with dry and sunny  summer. During July and August, average temperature raises to 75 – 85 F  with stable light winds from 5 to 15 knots. The winds are predominantly  southeast on the west part of the island and northwest on the eat part.  July marks the beginning of the peak sailing season, which will last  till the end of September. Cold winters are very rare in this area, with  average temperature around 60 F, Palma boat rentals are available the  year round. Nights are cold, but days are mostly sunny with partial  clouds. The highest rainfall is usually between October and December.  All in all, the weather is very pleasant and mild all year around.

Winter navigation

The average temperature in December-January in navigation area  near Balearic Islands is mild. The average max temperature is 18 C and  the minimum temperature 13 C. But it’s quite frequent to have a few days  with 20 C or above.

It’s necessary to be equipped with warm clothes and waterproof  jackets, but don’t be afraid it is just a precaution and if sunny and on  land, you will have chance to wear T-shirt.

All boats are supplied with bed linen and warm blankets; additional  heaters are also available to make the main saloon and cabins warm and  toasty in almost any conditions.

Nevertheless you should keep in mind that it is better to bring all  staff in soft bags or backpacks because space on the boat is limited.  Take the most comfortable clothes (wool socks, wool sweater, waterproof  jackets, water resistant shoes, wool hats), sunglasses, and protective  sun cream, personal medicines, toilette accessories and gloves.

Places of interest

Places of interest

The island's north-west coast is especially scenic, with its  terraced cliff sides and hidden coves. Once you venture away from  crowds, this area will give you a pleasant sense of isolation. It's  craggy coast is dotted with watch towers, ancient monasteries and  churches and picturesque idyllic villages.

Sun Marroig, estate of 18th century, has been converted into a museum with a great collection of pottery and paintings.

Mirador del Ses Animes, the former defense tower, standing on a steep rock, is visible from far away.

Port d'Andratx, used to be a small fishing port, now harbors  expensive yachts for the rich and famous. The cute town, with its white  shuttered houses and cobbled streets, lies in a valley, while the old  watch towers are formidably standing on the hill above it.

Another popular attraction is the pearl factory at nearby Manacor.

On the island's east coast, near the fishing port of Porto Cristo,  are the Caves of Drach, which contain one of the world's largest  underground lakes.

Mallorca's Caves

Mallorca's Caves

Caves in Mallorca are formed out of limestone rocks. Some are the  size of a cathedral with dripstones that form fantastic forms and are  illuminated for better impression. Once they provided shelter for early  settlers or hiding places for pirates. Although Mallorca has about 200  caves, only a few of them are open to public. And it's worth taking a  tour! There is a number of caves with underground lakes. They have great  acoustics and concerts can be performed by the musicians seated in  boats.

Beaches of Mallorca

Beaches of Mallorca

Mallorca has about 80 beaches. The best are around Badia de Palma.  Some of the beaches include restaurants, fun parks, water sports and  beachside bars. But it is still possible to find secluded beaches:  however they may have quite a few facilities and could be difficult to  reach.

Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

Palma over the years has transformed itself from a provincial  town into a metropolis. With a quarter of a million residents, it is  Mallorca's main city and the capital of Baleares province. It captivates  you by the evident signs of its rich history: dominant cathedrals,  grand public buildings, exquisite private mansions.

On a hill overlooking the port there is Bellver Castle, a fine  example of the 14th century military architecture. Caiman Forum Palma,  built in 1902, the most impressive 20th century building, now serves as a  cultural center. Palau Reial de I'Almudaina, the former royal residence  built in 1309, is now turned into a museum. And here is the Gothic  Cathedral, built of golden sandstone, is one of the most breathtaking  buildings in Spain. Palma Cathedral is one of the best-sited cathedrals  anywhere - it is positioned high on the sea wall towering over the  harbor. The construction began in 1230 and finished in 1601. At the  beginning of the century Antonio Gaudi remodeled most of its interior.

Among other structures of interest are Arab Baths of the 10th  century, Church of San Francisco of the 13th century and The Forn Teatro  (Theater Bakery), well-known for its impressive facade and it's  delicious pastries.

Spanish cuisine is as varied as the country itself. Good  quality local cuisine is always available. Most of the Balearic dishes  are Catalan in origin: ensaimadas  - spiral pastries dusted with icing  sugar or sobrasadas - spicy pork pates.

But the influence of each occupying force over the centuries - Arabs,  French or British – also has left its mark on the local cuisine, as  well. Sobrasada - a sausage-meat spread. Embutits – cured meats.  Surrounded by water, there is no wonder that seafood (especially lobster  and cray fish) predominates here. Caldereta de llagosta (lobster stue),  once a simple fishermen's dish is now a delicacy. The classic Mallorcan  dish is Pa Amb Oli, a slice of toasted bread rubbed with garlic and  drizzled with local olive oil. Tapas are popular bite-sized snacks,  often served hot with chilled wine or beer.

Skylark Superyacht

10 Person (Sleeps 9) Superyacht in Mallorca

Sporting a more modern and unique style than many catamarans of her kind, Sunreef Yacht Skylark is not one to be missed. Standing at 21.34m in length, Skylark was design and built by Sunreef Yachts and is a superb vessel to explore the beauty of the magical Mediterranean.

With a home port in the South of France, Skylark also cruises the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Costa del Sol, The French Riviera and Monaco, Corsica, Provence Coast and Marseille and North and South Italy including Sicily and Sardinia. What better way to explore this spectacular part of the world than on board the fabulous Sunreef Yacht Skylark?

Skylark fashions a slick silver and white exterior which adds to the contemporary appeal of this exclusive catamaran. The aft of the yacht holds a spacious dining area where guests can congregate and share a delicious meal or drink whilst admiring in the breath-taking surroundings. This also offers shade for those looking to escape the hot summer rays for a while.

In contrast, the flybridge makes for the perfect sun-trap and is the ideal sun-bathing space for guests who wish to work on their tan and soak up some rays. Here, there is also a state-of-the-art jacuzzi. Guests can sit back and enjoy the warm bubbles whilst simultaneously enjoying the 360-degree view of spectacular scenery. This Sunreef Yacht Skylark offers the dream luxury escape of relaxation for all guests no matter how you choose to spend the afternoon.

Sunreef Yacht Skylark is also a great choice for adrenaline junkies who love spending hours in the water. It has an epic collection of water toys available on board. The list includes seadoos, adult water skis, windsurfer, wakeboard, snorkel gear, inflatable kayak, paddleboards, a round donut for towing, fishing equipment and even a Sea Doo Aqua Lounge 6 Inflatable Island. This one-of-a-kind catamaran has something for everyone!

Skylark is home to four delightful and charming cabins and can provide nine guests with the most comfortable night’s sleep. The yacht has been described by past clients to have “much more space than a regular 4 cabin yacht”. The cabin configuration consists four double cabins, three holding luxurious queen-sized beds and one with an equally-generous double bed. There is also a pullman suitable for a child in the starboard aft cabin.

As with the rest of the yacht, each cabin is lined with wood panelling creating that warm and homely atmosphere. Guests feel instantly relaxed on board. Another great feature of Sunreef Yacht Skylark that adds to guest enjoyment, is the array of audio and visual equipment on board. There is a 42” plasma TV in the main salon and 26” TVs in all cabins, all installed with TVX movie system. WIFI and Satellite TV is available throughout the yacht as well as a Bose Hi-Fi system with iPod dock

It is evident why guests have such a wonderful time on board and why Sunreef Yacht Skylark receives such good reviews. When asked about their experience, a recent client said “the crew was great. The captain was very knowledgeable and flexible. The cook was super and the sailor was extremely friendly”. Since chartering Skylark, many clients have said they will no happily charter catamarans over motor yachts in the future due to the very acceptable consumption rate and cruising speed.

Skylark is available for charter with 212 Yachts today. For more information please contact us via the form below.
