“Build me a beast. Don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Yacht building folklore may now have one of the most quotable owner’s requests of all time. “Exciting”, “Radical”, “Edgy”, “Stunning”: these are the kind of words that greeted the 58m / 190ft high-performance sloop Ngoni during her explorations.
Designed by Dubois Naval Architects and featuring an innovative interior by Rick Baker Ltd, Ngoni is luxurious as well as “fast and furious” – the product of bold and minimalist design realised with impeccable build quality by Royal Huisman. Ngoni’s sleek and beautifully executed exterior conceals a host of innovative engineering to meet the challenges of marrying a huge, powerful and advanced rig with a slender and easily-driven hull.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE
To build a slender hull with adequate structural stiffness to cope with the heavy loads imposed by the near-100 tonne keel and the enormous rig (up to 60 tonnes on the forestay alone) is challenging enough. But Ngoni’s deck and hull are also punctuated by numerous openings: giant deck cut-outs for a large tender garage, crane, flush sail lockers, spa pool and cooled waste locker, plus large rectangular portholes, a sea-level gym door, fold-out side boarding platform, two submarine anchors and retractable thrusters.
Intensive research and analysis went into the development of the advanced and extremely powerful 71m / 233ft carbon rig and foils. The 853m2 / 9,182ft2 square-top mainsail is notable not just for its load-reducing halyard lock but for the innovation allowing the square-top and its supporting diagonal batten to detach automatically and furl neatly into the styled performance boom with minimal intervention from the crew. While hoisting, the diagonal batten attaches automatically too.
On approaching Ngoni, the observer is immediately struck by her dramatic lines and tall rig, perfectly complemented by the sculpted low profile superstructure that centres the design with elegant understatement. The dynamic curve of the sheer line: first convex, then subtly concave and finally convex once more for the sweep over the beach deck, suggests a natural affinity with the sea.
The luxuriously appointed guest cockpit offers an intimate outdoor space for reading and relaxation, playing games or simply watching the marine world around you. The deckhouse overhang, together with electrically-powered retractable windbreakers, ensures a sheltered environment in all conditions.

Royal Huisman launches 58m 'Ngoni'
Royal huisman launches the highly anticipated 58m sloop 'ngoni' - the last ever yacht designed by ed dubois….
Three years after the contract was signed, the highly anticipated 58m sloop Ngoni has hit the water at the Royal Huisman facility. Formerly known as The Beast and described by the yard’s managing director as “a yacht which embraces the spirit of individuality”, the high-performance sailing yacht has a romantic back story to her conception and design, created by the late Ed Dubois.
“Build me a beast. Don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” was the request to Royal Huisman from the discerning new owner of Ngoni , and the shipyard certainly didn’t disappoint as the result emerges from the Dutch facility for the first time.
The long and slender hull, combined with a powerful 71m rig demanding high forestay, “requires all the stiffness that advanced engineering can mastermind,” says the shipyard. While the yacht has a simplistic appearance, the most advanced engineering possible at the yard ensures the thrilling high-performance sloop will perform exceptionally, as “a true beast”.
“With Ngoni our philosophy has been that less is more, but you need an owner and a shipyard sharing the same vision,” says the owner’s project manager Godfrey Cray. This is certainly true with the yacht’s appearance, which is wonderfully simple, yet extremely stylish.
Although the interiors of the yacht are yet to be revealed, what we do know is that Rick Baker and Paul Morgan are responsible for the interior styling, with signature furniture by Francis Sultana.
As the last ever yacht designed by the late Ed Dubois, and with the closure of his renowned studio Dubois Naval Architects, there is an important piece of yacht design history engrained in the lines of the beast that is Ngoni.

Ngoni for sale: Stunning sailing superyacht yours for £45m…
- Toby Heppell
- June 8, 2021
For the first time the late Ed Dubois and Royal Huisman collaboration, Ngoni, has gone on sale. She remains for many one of the most stunning yachts ever launched
“Build me a beast. Don’t build me a sheep in wolf’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious.” This was the owners brief for Ngoni , which has now been listed for sale with Carrswood Yachts.
In other circumstances this brief would have been challenging enough, but when the project is a giant 58m (190ft) sloop with a displacement of nearly 400 tonnes you quickly start pushing the boundaries of superyacht design, deck hardware and materials technology.
Happily for those with a spare £45m and who might be interested in Ngoni , when Rupert Holmes (reporting for Yachting World) looked at Ngoni in detail and spoke with her designers, he found a boat that had more than delivered on the challenging owners’ brief.
Article continues below…
Ngoni: This stunning sailing superyacht is Ed Dubois’ last masterpiece
The owner’s brief for Ngoni would be challenging for any size of yacht: “Build me a beast. Don’t build me…
Obituary: Ed Dubois 1952-2016
Few yacht designers were as influential as Ed Dubois, who died in March at the age of 63. He trailblazed…
There is much to be impressed with on Ngoni , not least her rig. The towering mast, built by Rondal, is one of the world’s largest one-piece carbon spars. The rig had to look aesthetically perfect, so the aft four metres of the boom is an extension beyond the clew of the mainsail that’s shaped to match the profile of Ngoni ’s stern.
The enormous square top mainsail covers almost a quarter of an acre – the equivalent of four tennis courts.
Photo: Breed Media
As well as contributing to the minimalist styling, the elimination of as much on-deck hardware as possible has reduced weight aloft, while minimising wind resistance and improving airflow, particularly over the headsails.
Another key requirement of the brief was that the boat needed to be fun and rewarding to sail. It had to be a boat that you could sail all day and step off without feeling too tired from the excitement of hands-on fast sailing.
These requirements called for a high aspect ratio-balanced rudder allied to a manual steering system with no power assistance. The design process led to a single, 6.95m2 (75ft2) carbon rudder also made by Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal.
An impressive racer Ngoni may be, but she is still a superyacht and down below she still displays the sort of finery you would expect for the price tag.
The interior was designed by Rick Baker and Paul Morgan. The pair do not work exclusively in the marine field so they were able to bring some bold, outside-the-box thinking to the project.
There are several specialist finishes which would not normally be associated with a contemporary yacht. These include artisan resin panels and metalised spray and lacquered textured effects. Other finishes include bespoke veneers, distinctive marbles and Italian onyx.
The deckhouse has a bar and dining area to starboard and informal seating, with coffee tables and a pop-up television, to port. A curved staircase leads down from the deckhouse to the owner’s and guest accommodation. The lavish owners’ suite takes up a significant proportion of the main accommodation deck.
It includes a full-beam stateroom with a large bathroom, a study and a spacious gym with an opening port in the topsides. There are two superbly appointed guest cabins – a twin to port and a double to starboard with a Japanese theme.

A jaw-dropping superyacht believed to be worth £45m and rumoured to be owned by an oil baron has arrived in Devon. The impressive vessel named Ngoni - or the Beast as she’s known - is renowned as being one of the most stunning yachts ever launched.
It sailed into Dartmouth Harbour, yesterday, July 12. It has not been confirmed how long the yacht will remain there for but it is certainly causing a lot of interest in the harbour.
It measures a hefty 58 metres in length and was built in 2017 in the Netherlands. According to Yachting World , its mast, built by Rondal, is one of the world’s largest one-piece carbon spars, and its enormous square top mainsail covers almost a quarter of an acre – the equivalent of four tennis courts.

The interior includes a bar and dining, a lavish owners’ suite, guest accommodation, study and a spacious gym. The design spec by Ngoni’s owner was, 'build me a beast. I don’t want a wolf in sheep’s clothing'. The desire was for a fast global cruiser with relatively simple systems that would require minimal downtime for maintenance and be fun and rewarding to sail.
Delighted to see it in Dartmouth Harbour, harbourmaster Paul Britton said: "It is a private vessel so there is not much I can say about it. I can confirm it arrived early yesterday morning and is registered in Jersey.
"The length of its stay will depend on the weather. We have a bit of nasty weather coming through."
Ngoni was created using the combined talents of Royal Huisman and the late Ed Dubois. The name of the yacht, Ngoni, is the name for an ethnic group of people in eastern Africa and their language.
The new owner of the yacht, which was advertised for sale for £45m in 2021, is reported to be British businessman and entrepreneur Tony Buckingham. He was named one of Jersey’s richest men in 2011, with a £500m fortune. He has also been known as the FTSE 250’s most famous former mercenary.
The former North Sea diver, and believed to be a former British special forces officer, started his oil career at Ranger Oil and Premier Oil and later became an advisor to the Angolan Government.

A Closer Look at Ngoni, One of the Largest Sailing Yachts in the World
Delivered last summer and immediately put to good use in the Mediterranean, the 190-foot high-performance sloop Ngoni (originally known by its project name: The Beast) from Royal Huisman is a sailing sight to behold. Tasked by the owner to create a contemporary yacht with incredible performance, handling, and seakeeping paired with luxury amenities, Dubois Naval Architects settled on a minimalistic approach, creating a clean, clutter-free deck and low-profile superstructure, both of which made for an elegant and efficient yacht. Ngoni is also one of the largest sailing yachts in the world.
Dubois designed a slender aluminum hull with plumb bow and reverse sheer, which gave the hull structural stiffness. This is important, considering the large portholes, a fold-out side-boarding platform, water-level gym door, a couple of submarine anchors, and retractable thrusters, as well as a 100-ton lifting keel that adjusts from 26 to 17 feet. Maximum hull speed is 17 knots.
The yacht features a carbon mast and a 9,182 square-foot square-top mainsail with supporting diagonal batten that detaches automatically and furls into the styled boom. The diagonal batten attaches automatically when hoisting as well.
A Williams 565 Tender Diesel Jet boat is stored in a cut-out tender garage on the flush foredeck, and an inflatable Bombard commando C3 sport boat is stowed deflated in a storage locker for crew use. They are extracted from the yacht and placed into the water via a Nautical Structures crane.
The cockpit helm station features a sculptural carbon helm with a stainless-steel top. Besides a cozy and protected seating area, the cockpit also includes a popup TV for alfresco movies. Glass doors between the cockpit and the deckhouse expand the inside out and the outside in.
Rick Baker and his team created Ngoni’s sophisticated interior, which was meant to be anything but traditional. Instead, it is a curvy, masculine, and colorful scheme, and includes sculpted-metal surfaces, marble and onyx from Italy, and bespoke veneers.
The glass deckhouse includes a seating area, bar, and dining area. Belowdecks are the owner’s apartment and two en-suite guest staterooms, one a twin and the other a double. Both cabins feature large windows to pull in the sunshine, highlighting the interesting veneers, marbles, and resin finishes.
The aft full-beam owner’s suite comprises an en-suite bedroom, as well as an en-suite study and gym, plus an opening hull port for fresh air and natural light. The owner’s stateroom offers up direct access to an aft sunbathing and lounging area with carbon-fiber spa tub and steps down to the sea-level beach deck, which features an Olympic-size diving board.
Ngoni houses accommodations for crew, too, including a captain’s cabin, two single, and three twin crew cabins.
When not under sail, Ngoni has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at its MTU 8V 2000 M72 engine’s cruise speed of 12 knots.

Ngoni has been jointly listed for sale with Fraser and Carrswood Yachts and is asking €45,000,000. Ngoni — the word is the name for a people of eastern Africa and their language — is also unique for the non-traditional way she was managed. "It was a bit different for Royal Huisman," says Cray.
The owner had what he wanted. Ngoni is one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. Its minimalistic, clutter-free design was one of the requirements from the owner.
