Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

A rescue operation is ongoing for 6 missing people, including british entrepreneur mike lynch. an american was also among the missing..

One person died and six people were missing after a luxury yacht sank Monday in Italy off the coast of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, after a sudden storm hit the area, according to Italy's coast guard.

The Bayesian, a 184-feet-long, British-registered sailboat, went down just before sunrise, capsizing its 22 passengers and killing one man, the ship's cook, t he coast guard said in a statement. On Monday, rescue teams identified the body as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

Of the 15 passengers rescued, eight were taken to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, local news reported. A 1-year-old was among those rescued.

"We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily and are in contact with the local authorities," the U.K Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY.

The people missing were American, British, and Canadian nationals.

What caused the Bayesian to sink?

The ship sank after unexpectedly strong storms recently dumped heavy rainfall, causing flooding and landslides, in parts of the country. Among those missing are British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and his daughter, a person familiar with the rescue operation told Reuters.

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance who represented Lynch in a  U.S. trial , were among the missing. The wives of both men were also unaccounted for, said Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily.

"The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel," he told Reuters.

The yacht was owned by Lynch's family and had 22 people on board when it sank just before sunrise. The captain of a nearby ship told Reuters his crew rescued some survivors from a life raft, including three seriously injured.

"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner said. The other boat "went flat on the water, and then down," he said.

"A little baby and the wife of the owner" were rescued, while the ship's owner and a child were missing, he said.

The boat was located 160 feet under the water and divers were deployed to inspect the wreck, according to the coast guard.

The search-and-rescue operation continued on Monday morning, a Reuters live feed showed . A helicopter and four coast guard ships were at the scene on Monday morning, according to the coast guard.

Bayesian had set sail off Amalfi Coast in July

Prosecutors in a nearby town have opened an investigation into the events leading up to the ship sinking.

The Bayesian set off for Palermo from Positano, a village on Italy's southern Amalfi Coast, on July 30, according to marinetraffic.com . It last docked in the town of Milazzo, in Messina, on Wednesday, according to VesselFinder.

The ship has the tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to Perini Navi , its manufacturer. It was built in 2008.

Luxury yacht sinks off Sicily, leaving U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 Americans among those missing

By Anna Matranga

Updated on: August 20, 2024 / 7:47 PM EDT / CBS News

Rome  — Six people, including two U.S. nationals, a British technology entrepreneur and one of his daughters, were still missing Tuesday after a large luxury sailing yacht sank off the coast of the southern Italian island of Sicily during a violent storm. The 184-foot Bayesian had been anchored about half a mile off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, with 22 people on board — 10 crew members and 12 passengers.

The vessel sank at about 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. Eastern, Sunday) after being hit by a possible waterspout spawned by the storm. Italian media said the winds snapped the boat's single mast, unbalancing the vessel and causing it to capsize.

Fifteen of those on board managed to escape the yacht and were rescued by a Dutch-flagged vessel that was anchored in the immediate vicinity. They were brought ashore by Italian Coast Guard and firefighters.

italy-boat-sinks-sicily.jpg

One body — an unidentified male — was recovered, but six people remained missing, including British software magnate Mike Lynch, once described as Britain's Bill Gates.

Lynch was acquitted in June of fraud charges in the U.S. that could have landed him with a decades-long prison sentence. In an unusual twist, Lynch's co-defendant in that fraud case, who was also acquitted, died Saturday after being hit by a car while out jogging in England.

Lynch's teenage daughter Hannah was also among those missing, along with Lynch's American lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant district attorney in New York, and his wife Neda. British banker Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, was also still missing Tuesday.

Hewlett Packard Rotten Deal Trial

Among the survivors was a 1-year-old British girl who was being treated at a nearby hospital along with her parents. They were doing well, according to Italian media.

"For two seconds I lost my child to the sea, then I immediately was able to grab her again in the fury of the waves," the girl's mother, identified only as Charlotte, was quoted as saying by Italy's ANSA news agency. "I held on to her tightly in the stormy sea. Many were screaming. Luckily the life raft opened up and 11 of us managed to get aboard."

"It was terrible," she told ANSA. "In just a few minutes the boat was hit by a very strong wind, and sunk soon thereafter."

bayesian-yacht.jpg

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Dutch vessel that came to the rescue, told ANSA he had been anchored near the Bayesian.

"When the storm was over we noticed that the ship behind us was gone, and then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position and we found this life raft drifting, and in the life raft was also a little baby and the wife of the owner."

Recovery efforts were back underway Tuesday, with speedboats, helicopters and divers continuing to search for the missing — as well as for answers, as to how a state-of-the-art superyacht could disappear in a flash.

According to Italian media, Fire Brigade divers reached the boat and saw bodies trapped inside some of the cabins, but they had been unable to recover any of the victims from inside the vessel by Tuesday, due to obstructions. The Bayesian appeared to have sunk in an area with a depth of about 160 feet.

Witnesses said the boat sank quickly.

"I was at home when the tornado hit," fisherman Pietro Asciutto told a local news outlet. "I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I suddenly saw it sink... The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes."

The director-general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, confirmed to CBS News partner BBC News  that three of the six people still missing Monday were British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, whose company Autonomy Corporation PLC was acquired in 2011 by HP ; one of his daughters, Hannah Lynch, who is believed to be 18; and the boat's chef, Ricardo Thomas.

CBS News has seen corporate documentation showing a company called Revtom, solely owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who was among those rescued from the accident, as the owner of the yacht that capsized off Sicily.

While the yacht was a privately owned pleasure boat, the waters around the island have claimed many lives over the last decade.

Dozens of migrants have died attempting to reach Sicily and smaller Italian islands in the region. Sicily sits only about 100 miles from the east coast of Tunisia in north Africa, and the Mediterranean crossing has been a frequent site of both nautical rescues and disasters as smugglers routinely send small boats overloaded with desperate people into the sea.

'For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea' - Sicily yacht survivor

hurley 19 sailboat

A British mother on board a yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily has described holding her baby girl above the surface of the sea to save her from drowning.

The mother, named as Charlotte Golunski, her partner and one-year-old daughter are reported to be among 15 people to have been rescued from the luxury yacht Bayesian early on Monday.

Six people - including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch - are missing with one man found dead outside the wreckage.

Charlotte told Italian newspaper La Repubblica her family survived only because they were on deck when the yacht sank after encountering a heavy storm.

She said they were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

The 56m (183ft) vessel, which was carrying 10 crew and 12 passengers, sank half a mile off the coast of Palermo after the storm caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air, to appear over the sea.

“For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Charlotte said she held her baby "afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning".

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others," she added.

A lifeboat inflated and she said 11 people were able to climb in. All three of the family were unharmed and taken to hospital for check-ups.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said his crew took on board some survivors on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured.

Describing the moment, the storm hit, he told Italian news outlet Rai the superyacht tipped to its side and sank within "a few minutes"

"It all happened in really little time," he said.

A local fisherman, Giuseppe, told Reuters he was on board a motorboat when he saw "mats and T-shirts floating in the sea".

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, says he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 4:15am we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht "sinking with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello, the fishing village near Palermo where the disaster unfolded, to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

The Hurley 18 shares the same long keel design as its bigger sister the H22, having been designed at the same time. This, together with a good ballast/weight ratio, explains why she has a reputation as a stiff and comfortable boat at sea, with excellent ability to work to windward. 18 ft pocket cruisers will not be expected to have a spacious interior, but the interior layout of the 18 is very realistic in its ambitions, making it a very pleasurable boat. Although they can be found in the UK, over 70% were exported new, mainly to Europe and some to the USA. Having built 377 boats Hurley Marine built the last H18 in 1972 in favour of the bigger Hurley designs coming into production, the H27 in 1971, H24/70 in 1972 and the H30/90 in 1973. Just like the H22, the H18 can best be described as a "proper little ship".

Before Hurley Marine went out of business the moulds were sold to Russell Curnow of Penzance, Cornwall who continued to build them up until about 1979. The moulds were then bought by Varne Yachts of Nottingham who were later taken over by Weston Boats who then went out of business in 1986. Over 900 H18s were built altogether.

Chinese and Philippine ships collide again in disputed waters, and the countries are trading blame

Topic: World Politics

Two coast guard ships from China and the Philippines have collided during a confrontation in the disputed South China Sea.

Both countries blame the other for the incident.

What's next?

No injuries were reported but the tensions are the latest flashpoint in the contested maritime region.

Chinese and Philippine coast guard ships collided at sea, damaging at least two boats, in an encounter early on Monday near a new flashpoint in their increasingly alarming confrontations in the disputed South China Sea.

Both blamed the other for the collision near Sabina Shoal, a disputed atoll in the Spratly Islands, where overlapping claims are also made by Vietnam and Taiwan.

There were no reports of injuries.

China's Coast Guard accused the Philippines of deliberately crashing one of its ships into a Chinese vessel.

Two Philippine Coast Guard ships entered waters near the shoal, ignored the Chinese coast guard's warning and intentionally collided with one of China's boats at 3:24 am, a spokesperson said in a statement on the China Coast Guard's website.

"The Philippine side is entirely responsible for the collision," spokesman Gan Yu said.

"We warn the Philippine side to immediately stop its infringement and provocation, otherwise it will bear all the consequences arising from that."

Jonathan Malaya, assistant director-general of the Philippine government's National Security Council, accused the Chinese Coast Guard of disinformation.

Video and photographs, including those taken by journalists from a US TV network who were on board one of the Philippine Coast Guard ships, showed that the Chinese ships caused the latest collisions in the high seas, Mr Malaya told a news forum in Manila.

The Philippines' National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea said two of the coast guard's ships, BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño, "encountered unlawful and aggressive manoeuvres" from China coast guard vessels while en route to Patag and Lawak islands, which are occupied by Filipino forces, in the contested region.

"These dangerous manoeuvres resulted in collisions, causing structural damage to both Philippine Coast Guard vessels," the statement read.

The task force said the collision between BRP Cape Engaño and one of the Chinese ships created a hole on the deck of the Philippine ship with a diameter of about 12.7 centimetres.

About 16 minutes later, the other Philippine ship, BRP Bagacay, was rammed twice on its port and starboard sides by a different Chinese vessel, leading to structural damage, according to the task force.

"This is the biggest structural damage we have incurred as a result of the dangerous manoeuvres carried out by the Chinese Coast Guard," Commodore Jay Tarriela of the Philippine Coast Guard told the news forum in Manila.

"The [Philippine Coast Guard] stands firm in its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of our maritime domain while addressing any threats to our national interests," the Philippine task force said.

Disputed sovereignty making confrontations more frequent

China Coast Guard spokesman Gan Yu said China claimed "indisputable sovereignty" over the Spratly Islands, known in Chinese as Nansha Islands, including Sabina Shoal and its adjacent waters — the Chinese name for Sabina Shoal is Xianbin Reef.

In a separate statement, he said the Philippine ship that was turned away from Sabina Shoal entered waters near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, ignoring the China Coast Guard's warnings.

"The Chinese Coast Guard took control measures against the Philippine ship in accordance with law and regulation," he added.

Sabina Shoal, which lies about 140km west of the Philippines' western island province of Palawan, has become a new flashpoint in the territorial disputes between China and the Philippines.

A map shows the countries and their claims around the South China Sea, marked in coloured lines.

China's claims in the South China Sea cut through the majority of its neighbours' claims. ( ABC News graphic: Jarrod Fankhauser )

The Philippine Coast Guard deployed one of its key patrol ships, the BRP Teresa Magbanua, to Sabina in April after Filipino scientists discovered submerged piles of crushed corals in its shallows that sparked suspicions that China may be bracing to build a structure in the atoll.

The China Coast Guard later deployed a ship to Sabina in a new territorial face-off.

Sabina lies near the Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal, which has been the scene of increasingly alarming confrontations between Chinese and Philippine coast guard ships and accompanying vessels since last year.

China and the Philippines reached an agreement last month to prevent further confrontations when the Philippines transports new batches of sentry forces, along with food and other supplies, to Manila's territorial outpost in the Second Thomas Shoal, which has been closely guarded by Chinese coast guard, navy and suspected militia ships.

The Philippine navy transported food and personnel to the Second Thomas Shoal a week after the deal was reached and no incident was reported, sparking hope that tensions in the shoal would eventually ease.

"We are of course disappointed again," Mr Malaya said. "Despite this preliminary understanding, which we hoped was the first page in a new chapter between the Philippines and PRC [People's Republic of China] relations, we have … another incident."

China has been at odds with many other countries in the Asia-Pacific for years over its sweeping maritime claims, including almost all of the South China Sea, a strategic and resource-rich waterway around which Beijing has drawn a 10-dash line on official maps to delineate what it says is its territory.

Beijing is in the midst of a massive military expansion and has become increasingly assertive in pursuing its claims, giving rise to more frequent direct confrontations, primarily with the Philippines, though it is also involved in longtime territorial disputes with Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.

A 2016 arbitration ruling by a United Nations tribunal invalidated Beijing's claims in the South China Sea, but China did not participate in the proceedings and rejected the ruling.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Hi. Hear much about H20 and H22. But the H18... any atlantic crossings in this little "ship"? What's your oppinion on such task (offshore that is!) in a Hurley 18?

sarabande

Well-known member

can be done with some preparation and skill. Try asking these people:- http://www.hurleyownersassociation.co.uk/pages/h18.htm

By the looks of it a fine little boat.It enters what I would call the "Barrel syndrome boat" in relation to ocean crossing.Anything will cross the ocean..even little yellow ducks. The problem is the occupant.I would say the big draw back would be having reached the other side there would be little room for guests and partying.

We used to have a Hurley 19 (which nobody's ever heard of), which was effectively a Hurley 18 with an extra foot stuck on the back. There are the deep keel Hurleys, which made fabulous ocean trips, and the shallow bilge / triple keel ones which are great for ditch crawling. Ours was a poor example (cost £400), and it certainly wouldn't have been my first choice for an atlantic crossing. The mast cracked in action, which could maybe be expected for a bit of aluminium alloy, with steel fittings, that had spent 40 years bathed in saltwater, but surprised the hell out of me.

My previous boat was a Hurley 18. I felt it was very seaworthy boat (for its size) and had great faith in it. It was my first boat and it looked after me despite my inexperience. I sold it to a chap who intended to sail it to Spain.

Seajet

I'm sure a suitably prepared and handled example could take most that could be thrown at her. On the other hand, I met a youngish couple who were making their way slowly down the French Canals in a Hurley 18, they had everything well organised and she seemed perfectly comfortable for two over many months.

LittleSister

LittleSister

According to PBO's 'Which Boat', the points in favour of a Hurley 18 (actually 18 and a half feet LOA it says) are 'rugged, heavy-duty cruiser. Stiff, full bodied hull. Adequate fittings. Sensible outboard well'. Against, it said 'Smallish cockpit. Cramped berths. Deep draft'. I thought I had read somewhere that at least one had crosssed the Atlantic. Having previously owned a Hurley 22, I have great faith in Ian Anderson's ability to design a great sea boat (and there's a close family likeness). I would certainly consider buying a Hurley 18, if the circumstances were right (suited home waters, budget, etc.), but it's not the boat I'd want to do the Atlantic in. That's principally because of size. Much as it's POSSIBLE to cross the Atlantic in an 18 footer, you have to leave out much of the safety and comfort gear that I, for one, would want to take (and the Hurley is not the most capacious 18 footer). Even just a small increase in LOA from 18 foot gives you a lot more room. There was a series of articles in PBO a few years ago by Alistair Buchan about preparing his Hurley20 for an Atlantic crossing (and previously various other travels, including Norway, I think). It might be useful to read those, even if you're interested in a Hurley 18, rather than a Hurley 20. They are well written and engaging, and while he's a fan of his Hurley he is not blind to its shortcomings

Another couple of things to bear in mind. 1) Because of their age, and having been an out of favour type for many years, they will be cheap, but beware it will be extremely unlikely that you will find one that has been well maintained throughout its life. Consequenty you will most likely need to spend considerably more than the purchase price refitting a Hurley 18 for such a trip. 2) Keeping batteries charged is a perennial problem on a boat with a small outboard motor. For a long trip it's a major challenge. Of course you can work round it (or take the Shane Acton approach of dispensing with electrics), but bear it in mind.

Appriciate your well spoken answers! The load capacity may be of consern?! One of the "ups" is it's a cheap boat = more money for windvane, gear and so on.... One thing more: If I want to put up double "headsail" (?!) on an "extension" of the bow (sorry for my crapy english) How does this do to the sailing stabillity? possible? Think it would be "nice" on downwind sailing?!

Any other capable samall around 20 foot boats??? Looked at the Kingfisher 20 , but no one in Sweden. to expensive to import. what about the Leisure 17? better/sturdyer than H18?

None of the boats that you are looking at are designed for ocean crossing. The fact that many have done so is more a tribute to the courrage and resourcefulness of the individual sailors than anything else. Doubt many people use these boats through choice, but more through lack of money for something more suitable.

Tranona. So very true... But the sunset looks the same in a Hurley 18 for 2 grand, as in a 2000 grand Hallberg rassy. sailing is not for "some" it is for everyone!

Well, I''ve found none other than my last boat, now for sale again: http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/yachts/thompson-t27-PAA11792 It sounds like she's been a little neglected, but 27' for £2750 might be a bargain. A lot depends on condition, and you're sure to need to do a little work, but she would be one of the best boats at this end of the price spectrum to do a transat in. Nearly 6' draft on a 27 footer, with a big bulb at the bottom means she's stiff as a church. She has already sailed across the Atlantic (different preious owner). I've sailed her in some nasty conditions (the video he refers to was me), and she behaved herself perfectly. She is also very very strong. I know this because she broke free of her mooring and bounced around on a pointy rock, in a two foot swell for pretty much 24 hours before I could get her off again. And yet, she was not holed. (She was deeply scratched though, and professionaly repaired - don't worry) We sold her because we moved abroad. I've just bought another boat, but if I were in the market for a boat in this price range again, I'd certainly take a look. (no connection to current vendor - but nice to see that my auld boat is alive and well)

Today. this one is a possible offshore cruiser? The same as Albin Vega just smaller... 7,10 m long...just 1000 EUR your oppinion? http://www.blocket.se/goteborg/Karlskrona_Viggen_32375201.htm?ca=23_3&w=3

You've been pointed to masts in the region of $500, between $100 to $250.. estimate $5k for a basic fitout including small .
But you'll have to do your own legwork, we can only give general pointers like links to suppliers etc.

where there's a general idea of known and time estimates. Even a professional would not want to give a fixed for the .
On your other thread you asked what takes the most time. It's everything and usually it's a death by a thousand cuts. A friend of mine is bolting an bracket on his small yacht this weekend. To access the inside nuts there's a 4 inch diameter hole in a locker that needs someone with a spaghetti arm to reach into. He first has to find the right bracket, dry fit it, make some for the nuts, then find a helper to hold the bolts. Finally he is ready with the Sikaflex gun to coat the bolts and bracket and then bolt it to the transom. Then clean up all the Sikaflex residue with turpentine. Just that one job can absorb hours of time.
Everything has to be a 100% correct on a . There's no stepping of the when the outboard bracket falls Off from a shoddy or the boat springs a leak from a badly installed fitting.
I already gave you a break down of costs to get sailing from what I found used on Facebook. It's not rocket science, get googling and find what's in your neighbourhood. One thing I can tell you if you want to have all new on the Hurley then expect to easily spend 20k on a boat that's worth 3k.
Cheers

of the Hurley then "Master Baiter" would be a good name. "In Too Deep" could be another good name, depending how much he spends.
BigCity I hope you don't have two left thumbs. Plenty of amateur owner's improvements actually devalue the boat they are working on.
BigCity you might want to watch "Captain Ron" to get an idea of what the sailing life is like.

into a useful boat for not a lot of , but you cannot do it if you pay too much attention to people whose frame of reference is factory-built and chandler-supplied fittings. Remember that factory building of yachts and fitting them out with fancy doodads from Ronstan is something that has afflicted the world only for a fairly short time. Something like half my lifetime. When I departed the womb sculling a skiff, great numbers of in this size range were "roll-your-own"s.

You COULD, if personal development (rather than becoming just another "yottie") is your objective, and if you are willing to eschew conspicuous , bring this derelict back to usefulness for not a lot of . I could, if I got motivated, introduce you to some things that the majority of this forum's would consider UTTERLY heretical, but which will today as well as they did in days of yore when Joe Slocum circumnavigated the world in an smack he rebuilt after it had been rotting in a marsh for years, and John Voss circumnavigated the world in a "native" dug-out canoe bought from an indigenous woman on the of for a bottle of rye whiskey and, I think it was, eighty bucks! Remember that except for a small number of Yankees from "down east" all Americans are "Johnny come latelys" to seafaring. There is no reason that you shouldn't join them, even if, as seems likely to me, you will have to find your sea-legs in some place like Lake Erie rather than on the briney.

Cheers!
